The FBI on Tuesday will deliver a report to U.S. lawmakers explaining why the law enforcement agency did not recommend charges over Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email server, CNN reported, citing U.S. officials briefed on the matter. The confidential material, which will include FBI agent memos on their interviews with the Democratic presidential candidate, is classified and cannot be made public, according to CNN. REUTERS

RUSSIA USES IRAN AS BASE TO BOMB SYRIAN MILITANTS FOR FIRST TIME

Russia used Iran as a base from which to launch air strikes against Syrian militants for the first time Tuesday, widening its air campaign in Syria and deepening its involvement in the Middle East. In a move underscoring Moscow’s increasingly close ties with Tehran, long-range Russian Tupolev-22M3 bombers and Sukhoi-34 fighter bombers used Iran’s Hamadan air base to strike a range of targets in Syria. It was the first time Russia has used the territory of another nation, apart from Syria itself, to launch such strikes since the Kremlin launched a bombing campaign to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in September last year. It was also thought to be the first time that Iran has allowed a foreign power to use its territory for military operations since the 1979 Islamic revolution. REUTERS
FED OFFICIALS EYE U.S. INTEREST RATE HIKE
3
The Federal Reserve is raising expectations for an interest rate rise this year, even as early as next month, after two policymakers Tuesday said the economic stars now appear to be aligning despite weak U.S. economic growth in the first half of 2016. New York Fed President William Dudley said “it’s possible” to raise ISTOCK rates at the Sept. 20-21 policy meeting given evidence of wage gains and a tighter labor market that could boost inflation, while Dennis Lockhart of the Atlanta Fed said a hike next month is in play. The comments, which prompted investors to boost bets on a rate hike, came nine days before the annual meeting of some of the world’s top central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a venue the Fed often uses to telegraph policy plans. When Bob Sparks was 3 years old, he woke up scared in the middle of the night and ran to the living room of his childhood home in Cambridge to find his parents. Instead, he found his uncle, Ron Sparks, then about 20 years old and wearing his Army uniform. That was the first and last time Bob Sparks met his Uncle Ron. On Feb. 12, 1951, Cpl. Ronald M. Sparks went missing in action in Korea while his unit was clearing a roadblock held by enemy forces, according to a statement from Christine Bongiorno, Arlington’s director of Health and Human Services. A surviving prisoner of war said that Sparks died

Uncle Ron was listed as missing in action in Korea and never came home.’ My mother and father never got over the fact that they couldn’t give him a proper burial,” his father told him, Bob Sparks wrote in an editorial for the Vineyard Gazette. “So began my solemn mission. … Over the past 11 years I have
corresponded with the Army’s Past Conflicts Repatriation Branch, provided them with photographs, family biographies, dental records and, most important, DNA samples.” Those samples helped identify a previously unknown soldier who was buried in Hawaii, according to The Boston Globe. It’s unclear how or when Sparks’ body was repatriated after the Korean War. Now, Bob Sparks is laying the Korean War vet to rest back home. Sparks’ body arrived at Logan Airport on Tuesday. A funeral procession passed his childhood hometown of Cambridge and continued to the funeral home in Arlington. Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett on Friday. Sparks was awarded the Bronze Star with V device for valor prior to going missing, and was also a Purple Heart recipient, according to his obituary. “It has been 65 years, but Cpl. Sparks is finally coming home,” said Jeff Chunglo, Arlington’s Director of Veterans’ Services, in a statement.

Police commissioner to assign body cameras after no officers volunteer for city pilot program Not even a $500 stipend was enough to entice any Boston police officers to participate in a pilot program equipping 100 of the city’s cops with body cameras, forcing top brass to select “volunteers.” “We bargained for the volunteers, and for whatever reason, they didn’t sign up,” Police Commissioner Bill Evans told Boston Public Radio Tuesday. “Me and the mayor had a very productive meeting last night with the unions about it, and starting today, officers are going to be assigned.” “They’ll probably challenge us,” Evans added. “But that’s what the union does, they look out for their membership. Unless a court stops it, right now that’s the way we’re going.” The shootings of unarmed and armed black men by police that set off violent protests in
Ferguson, Missouri, and have spread to Baltimore; Baton Rouge, Lousiana; and most recently Milwaukee, have made body cameras a central part of the national debate on law enforcement reforms. “It is a voluntary program; however, if officers don’t step up to do it or if we don’t get a sufficient amount of officers to do it, we’re going to be putting them out there on officers,” Mayor Marty Walsh told the Boston Herald Monday. “We’re making this a directive. ... They have to wear them.” A memorandum of understanding signed by the department and union in July stipulates that participants will be chosen from
volunteers, though it does not lay out what would occur if no volunteers step forward. “To require non-volunteers to participate in the program would clearly violate the agreement,” Boston Police Patrolman’s Association President Patrick M. Rose told the Herald in an email. “The BPPA would hope that the City and the Department would honor its written agreement with the BPPA concerning [body cameras].” The pilot program is slated to start Sept. 1, though it’s unclear if the union’s objection to assigning the cameras will push that date back. Aaron Hernandez double murder trial date set for Feb. 13 Ex-NFL star, already serving life for murder, is accused of killing two men outside Boston nightclub in 2012. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez, already serving a life sentence for killing a man near his home, is scheduled to go to trial Feb. 13 for the murder of two men he allegedly shot outside of a Boston nightclub. Hernandez appeared in Suffolk Superior Courthouse with his lawyers Tuesday for a hearing, during which the
trial date was set. Hernandez, 26, pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and weapons charges in the 2012 driveby murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. Hernandez allegedly became angry after one of them spilled a drink on him. Recently, Hernandez hired new lawyers, Harvard Law professor Ronald S. Sullivan Jr. and Jose Baez, who successfully defended Casey Anthony in her trial in her daughter’s death. Last summer, Alexander Bradley, the man Hernandez allegedly shot in the face for mentioning the fatal shootings of de Abreu and Furtado, was granted immunity from Suffolk County prosecutors trying the double
murder. Bradley was shot, authorities said, after he commented on two men in a club that Hernandez reportedly thought were undercover cops. It might have to do with “that stupid stuff you did in Boston,” Bradley told Hernandez prior to being shot, authorities said. According to documents previously filed in court, Bradley was in the passenger seat of Hernandez’s car when he pulled up next to de Abreu and Furtado on Shawmut Avenue and opened fire. It’s unclear if Bradley will testify in court. He is serving time in a Connecticut prison for gun charges not related to the Hernandez case. Bradley testified in the trial for the murder

A rescue mission rushed to Joshua Pond in Osterville on Monday night after the man was reported missing around 8 p.m., WBZ reports. His body was found about 45 minutes later. The children were playing alone on the beach and told another man that they couldn’t find their father, according to the Cape Cod Times. Police: Woman attacks, bites MBTA conductor in dispute over fare Police have arrested a Sharon woman who they say attacked an MBTA conductor when he attempted to collect her fare. Around 10 p.m. Monday, transit officers arrived at the Readville Commuter Station to investigate reports of a disorderly person, po-
lice stated. The train’s conductor pointed out Emma Bloom, 23, and said she had attacked him earlier in a dispute over her fare. When the conductor attempted to collect her money, Bloom refused to pay, and the conductor told her she would have to get off the train, according to authorities. Bloom then allegedly kicked, punched and bit the conductor, who said she also took out a knife and threatened to stab him. Officers took Bloom into custody, and her arraignment at West Roxbury District Court was expected Tuesday, police added. She will face charges of assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon. JASON NUCKOLLS

BRIEF German man arrested on suspicion of selling gun to Munich shooter Police on Tuesday arrested an armed 31-year-old German man who boasted during a sting operation that he had supplied the Glock 17 pistol used by a gunman who killed nine people in Munich on July 22, the Frankfurt state prosecutor said in a statement. Authorities arrested the man, who was not named, in Marburg, after contacting him on the so-called dark net and posing as buyers for an automatic weapon and another Glock 17 pistol for $9,021, it said. The man’s claims were supported by evidence gathered by the Munich prosecutor’s office and Bavarian state police, the statement said. “There is the strong suspicion that the 31-year-old man sold the Glock 17 used in the Munich shooting to the 18-year-old German-Iranian shortly before the attacks,” the Bavarian state police said in a separate statement. The Frankfurt prosecutor’s office said the suspect was identified during unrelated investigations into illegal weapons purchases by a 62-year-old accountant and a 17-year-old student. REUTERS
Clinton names Obama veterans to White House transition team Four co-chairs were named. Looking to lay the groundwork for her presidency if she wins the White House in November, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton named several veterans of President Barack Obama’s administration for her transition team on Tuesday. Ken Salazar, a former interior secretary and senator from Colorado, will lead a team of four cochairs including one-time national security adviser Tom Donilon and Neera Tanden, a former Obama aide who now leads the progressive Center for American Progress thinktank, the Clinton campaign said. The other co-chairs are former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Maggie Williams, director of

Prosecutors will not receive funding to go after medical marijuana sales if permissible under state guidelines. ISTOCK
Prosecutors dealt setback in medical marijuana cases The U.S. Department of Justice cannot spend money to prosecute federal marijuana cases if the defendants comply with state guidelines that permit the drug’s sale for medical purposes, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. The ruling, from the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, comes as voters in nine more states will consider allowing the recreational use of marijuana this November. Twenty-five U.S. states allow for medical marijuana. While the sale of the drug is still illegal under federal law, Congress in 2014 passed a budget rule that prohibits the DOJ from using federal funds to interfere in the implementation of state marijuana regulations. Due to this rule,
25
STATES ALLOW MEDICAL MARIJUANA defendants in 10 cases in California and Washington argued that their federal charges should be dismissed. The Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, which covers nine Western states, ruled Tuesday that the DOJ could not spend money as long as those defendants “strictly complied” with all state regulations. The appeals court sent the cases back to lower courts to determine if the defendants had complied with state law. In November California and eight other states will consider whether to
allow marijuana for recreational use. Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska, as well as the District of Columbia, already permit it. The unanimous ruling Tuesday was issued by a three-judge panel, two of whom are Republican appointees with a history of pro-law enforcement opinions. Despite the outcome, however, Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote that medical marijuana purveyors should not feel immune from federal law. “Congress could restore funding tomorrow, a year from now or four years from now,” he wrote, “and the government could then prosecute individuals who committed offenses while the government lacked funding.” REUTERS

Canada officials may charge U.S. hunter who speared bear to death Alberta may file charges against a U.S. hunter who posted a video of himself killing a black bear with a spear, wildlife officials said Tuesday, as the Canadian province moved to ban spear hunting. The video, which sparked outrage online, shows hunter Josh Bowmar, who is a javelin thrower, baiting a trap for the bear in a wooded area and then impaling the animal with a long spear with a camera attached to it. Bowmar, 26, defended the way he killed the bear, while Alberta Environment Ministry spokesman Kyle Ferguson described the hunt as “unacceptable” and “archaic.” “We will introduce a ban on spear hunting this fall,” Ferguson said. “In the meantime, we have asked Fish and Wildlife officers to investigate this incident to determine if charges are warranted under existing laws.” REUTERS

dent for the E! network. “When I go home, I love to eat feijoada, traditional Brazilian blackbean soup with ham and sausage. It’s served with rice and pico de gallo salsa that we make,” she says. And it’s a dish she loves making for McConaughey and their three children. But if she could pass down just one dish to her kids, Alves says it would be the Brazilian version of chicken stroga-
noff. “It’s completely different from the European stroganoff,” she says. “We use Greek olives, and mushrooms — although I don’t like the mushrooms, so I keep them out. And we use a Spanish cream [Media Crema] that isn’t used in the European version. Brazilian food has a lot of protein, so if there isn’t enough chicken, it isn’t real Brazilian stroganoff.”
Alves’ Brazilian chicken stroganoff Ingredients: •3 tablespoons oil •3 bone-in split chicken breasts with skin •1 tablespoon achiote paste (annatto seed) •2 1/2 teaspoons salt •6 cloves garlic smashed in a mortar and pestle or placed in a plastic bag and hit with a ladle •1/4 red pepper, cut into thin strips •1/4 cup packed chopped cilantro •1 white onion, diced •1 tomato, quartered •4 cups water (divided on half) •1 bay leaf •1 cup of corn (frozen, fresh or canned) •1/3 cup sliced green olives
•2 tablespoons Media Crema (find it in the Mexican aisle of your grocery store -- open can and refrigerate for 15 min only using the cream that rises to the top) •Cooked rice, for serving
two more cups of water to slow cooker.
Preparation: 1. Heat slow cooker on high, add oil, chicken skin side down, salt and achiote into slow cooker. Toss to coat chicken.
5. Let chicken cool and pull/shred meat from the chicken breasts.
2. In a blender, add smashed garlic, red pepper, cilantro, diced onion, and tomato. Pour in 2 cups of water and blend well. Pour blended mixture over chicken in slow cooker and then add
3. Cook on high for 4 hours. 4. Drain the chicken and vegetables, reserving all the broth.
6. Return the meat to a large fry pan. Add corn, green olives and only the cream that rises to the top of the Media Creme, and some of the reserved chicken stock to reach your desired consistency. 7. Warm it up and serve with rice.

From indies to Disney Filmmaker David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”) tells us how he wound up on “Pete’s Dragon.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Watching the moody 2013 indie crime drama “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” you probably wouldn’t say, “The guy who made this should make a Disney movie about a flying green monster.” And yet that’s what happened. Director David Lowery wound up going to the big leagues with “Pete’s Dragon,” which is not only a very, very loose take on the 1977 Disney original, it’s also an atypically modest and intimate summer movie, even with big names like Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford. Tell me what the transition is like going from small films to a big one. You know, it didn’t end up feeling different. It was exactly the same experience; it just lasted longer. [Laughs] You have a lot more time for prep — that’s always a good

thing. And then you have a much longer shoot, which is also a good thing, though it also wears you down. And then there was 13 months in postproduction, which was a bizarre experience for me. To focus on one thing for that long, that was new to me. I’m a short-attentionspan kind of person.
Part of filmmaker David Lowery’s new tasks on “Pete’s Dragon” involved directing a movie with a CGI dragon (with Oakes Fegley in the foreground). DISNEY
What about helping the child actors act — and even have a deep friendship — with something that on set is sometimes just a tennis ball on a stick? I’m going to throw that entirely into the “Oakes is an amazing actor” category. [Laughs] I knew we needed a child who could sustain that sort of communication with something that’s not there. It really comes down to imagination. Luckily that’s something kids have a lot of. I was a little worried, though. I had a lot of imagination, but kids these days, who have iPads and things I didn’t have at their age, you think, ‘Is there a deficit of imagination?’ But that’s not the case. They still have the capacity to imagine and to believe in something that’s not there and to do so convincingly. That is very refreshing that kids can still do that. I was worried they’d be lost in gadgets. They have multitudes. As soon as we’d yell “cut” they’d get their iPads out. We had six kids, and they all became a team of best friends who were all competing on some iPad game I’d never heard of. But when they had to return to the scene, they’d switch whatever switch was inside their head that allows them to believe in magic. It was fantastic.

10 FILM For Jack Huston, the hardest part of “BenHur” wasn’t playing one of Charlton Heston’s biggest roles. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
It’s no small feat to step into shoes already worn by Charlton Heston. Luckily for John Huston, he had a couple aces up his sleeve. For one thing, the English actor, 33, is Hollywood royalty: He’s one of the Hustons, related to Anjelica, Danny, John and Walter. As luck would have it, he’s known Fraser Heston, Charlton’s son, since he was a kid. Before taking the lead in the new remake of “Ben-Hur,” he asked Fraser for his blessing, and got it. And so here Huston is as 2016’s own Judah Ben-Hur, the Jewish nobleman who seeks revenge on the friend (played by Toby Kebbell) who destroyed his family. That also means having to endure the film’s centerpiece: a redo of the famed chariot race, which took three grueling months to shoot. You have to play Judah Ben-Hur in two very different stages: When he’s wealthy and fancy-free and when he’s starving and ripped. It must be particularly rough not eating great food when you’re shooting in Rome. If you’re in the galleys of a slave ship, you’re not going to be eating three-

The studio gave me a chef who’s also a nutritionist. He was this wonderful Italian man named Giuliano who loved cooking and had the best heart. And he was just in a state of disarray every day. He’d come in to hand the food out, and I could see he wanted to cry every time. He had to make me the most bland, boring food — proteins and veg and no salt. It was
tearing him apart inside. He really wanted to cook me the most extravagant pasta dishes with the best wine. Instead he was under strict instructions not do give me any food with any flavor. Speaking of pushing yourself to the limit, tell me about the chariot race. You already knew how to ride a horse coming into this, but that’s nothing like driving four of them. I was very comfortable and confident with horses; I could ride like I could walk. I thought that would give me a leg-up. But nothing really prepares you for a chariot — four horses

They’re basically racing each other. They don’t even know they’ve got a 150-pound person behind them. How long did it take you to feel like a pro? We had about threeand-a-half months of training, which starts with a seated car, then you progress to two horses and finally four. It’s quite a rigorous process. The first day you’re convinced you’re going to die. Then the second
day, funnily enough, it sort of becomes addictive. You don’t think about anything when you’re on that chariot, going around the track at full speed. When you’re really tearing it, you are literally only focusing on the job at hand. You don’t question yourself; you’re not in that constant battle for your life. It’s rather meditative. It’s liberating to be free of one’s ways.

Another reason to be excited for ‘Rogue One’ JENNA BUSCH Geek Girl in Hollywood Jenna Busch takes on the way pop culture snubs its female fans. For more columns, visit metro.us/jenna-busch as well as her site, Legion of Leia. (legionofleia.com)
There have been endless articles about the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” trailer since it premiered last week. There are bound to be more with the arrival of the international trailer, which features brandnew footage. I’m not going to break the trailers down for you, as it’s been done over and over. I do, however, want to tell you a different reason I’m excited about the movie. I mean, aside from the fact that it looks amazing. I mean, really amazing. I mean, I love this trailer more than warm oatmeal cookies with drizzled icing. But that’s not the only reason why. When I was a kid, I was introduced to Anne McCaffrey’s book series “Pern.” The world was full of dragons and riders; it totally sucked me
Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, hero of the forthcoming “Star Wars” film “Rogue One,” out Dec. 16, appears to be a complex female character. LUCASFILM
in. The way I got in, however, was through a side trilogy, written about an at-the-time relatively minor character named Menolly. McCaffrey would go back to her world and tell minor stories and weave them in to give a wider picture of a larger universe. You got a look into not just the major characters, but also what else was going on and the lives of other people.
As a kid, seeing the original “Star Wars” trilogy, I wanted to know more. I wanted to know where regular people lived and where the rest of the Rebellion was. I wanted to know how many other worlds there were. I wanted to know about the “many Bothans” who died to give the Rebellion information. I wanted to know where Princess Leia got the
Death Star plans before she gave them to R2-D2. The announcement of “Rogue One” was childhood wish fulfillment. Just as the original “expanded universe” did for years, in the form of books, video games and comics, this will fill in holes. “Star Wars Rebels” and “The Clone Wars” have done the same. I’m dying to know everything about everything!
And then there’s Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, our hero. Yes, she’s still one of the only ladies in a giant group of men, but she clearly kicks butt and isn’t exactly perfect. It feels like writing a well-rounded female action hero is becoming the norm, as opposed to “tough chick in black leather.” Jyn, Katniss, Rey — it’s finally happening. To learn about another
amazing and complex female character, one we didn’t know about before (like we did with Ahsoka Tano, Hera and Sabine), and to see the trailer on my TV; to see the new planet Jedha, a U-Wing transport gunship, the size of K-2SO, Darth Vader; to see yet another part of my all-time favorite fantasy universe — well, it’s pretty darn awesome.

12 THINGS TO DO
From market to market How to hack Boston’s best farmers markets.

With the summer sun bringing farmers markets to every major square in the Hub, knowing how to maneuver the marketplace makes shopping for dinner less of a chore. For advice on how, what and when to buy from your local exchange, vendors and local shoppers from markets across Boston open up on the best ways to eat your (local) veggies.

morning rush.” Also consider the summer heat. A seller from Haymarket notes that produce waiting all day outdoors can affect the quality of the produce.
Do ask questions Head farmer of Kimball Fruit Farm Dan Wadleigh loves when his customers ask him questions. “[By] knowing where the produce is coming from, people trust the produce and find peace of mind in what they’re getting,” he says. Wadleigh encourages buyers to ask about what sprays or pesticides were used on the produce, storing tips for produce or for a substitute when an item isn’t available at the market.

Linda Okun has been going to the Brookline Farmers Market since she was a little girl — which was about 50 years ago. She comes to the farmers market to meet her friends as well as her favorite vendors. “I have a fish lady, I have a poultry lady, I have a knife lady …” Okun recounts. “It’s a meet up place; it become a social occasion.” Okun
then continued to prove her point by grabbing a treat from a homemade ice cream truck parked around the bend.
Don’t bargain the price Sorry, but everyone — customers and vendors alike — recommends not asking for a discount at the farmers market. Customers who know what it takes for their farmers to get produce from the farm to the market recognize that the quality and freshness are included in the price. For Zach Lewis from Somerville, “If it’s marginally more expensive, it’s worth it.” As for the deals at Haymarket, Boston’s oldest open air, it’s hard to imagine getting a bigger bargain from the deals available (They’re selling a crate of berries for $5 by Saturday evening!) but we did witness one seller taking a dollar off for a man short on cash — perks of interacting directly with the seller!
Don’t be afraid to try new things
“What should I eat for dinner?” is the last question you want to ask after a long workday. Ames

believes that the seasonal food options farmers are selling are a start. “People get bogged down by planning,” he says. “With [seasonal eating], you get to be adventurous.” In addition to putting dinner in the hands of a market’s seasonal selection, shoppers can also ask the seller for tips for preparing it.
Don’t disrespect the produce Amanda Centrella from Langwater Farms has only one request for shoppers: “Have respect for what’s on the stand because it took a lot to get them there.” She’s talking to shoppers who either handle produce roughly or carelessly drop them on the ground and to parents who don’t watch as their kids pick and eat fruit right off the market shelf. An appropriate punishment? Making them eat broccoli.

Last week, three friends arrived at PRX’s new Podcast Garage in lower Allston ready to experiment. They had never produced a podcast — or even used microphones before — but upon booking a low-cost studio space for a couple of hours, they were well on their way to becoming full-fledged podcasters. After recording and mixing sound with the help of Garage staff, the group left the studio with a piece of personal storytelling in hand. “It was so cool to see, says Audrey Mardavich, PRX’s director of special projects. “If this place didn’t exist, they may never have done that. Mardavich hopes that the Podcast Garage welcomes less experienced producers into podcast world, finds new voices and gives them a strong platform to hone and develop their craft. Conceived by the PRX — the masterminds behind “This American Life, “Serial and the rest of the Radiotopia family — the Podcast Garage is a multi-room community podcast recording studio on West-

The Podcast Garage offers something unique: an open door to a high quality studio space. “Podcasting has been growing enormously over the past few years yet there wasn’t a space for independent producers to gather, collaborate and record, explains Mardavich. Mardavich also sees the Podcast Garage’s potential for cultivating new talented podcasters. “I see Boston as a real
Paws up: A cat cafe is coming

Boston’s first cat cafe is officially coming, and it’s going to be PURR-fect ‌ eventually. Hull resident Diane Kelly has been collecting inspiration from other cat cafes around the country, even adopting her own kitty while visiting New York’s Little Lions Cat Cafe last March. “His name is Augustus — or Gus,â€? she says. Kelly’s cat cafe will be named PURR and she signed a lease last week, with a tentative January open date. The location is still TBA, noting a long stretch of planning, hiring and approvals ahead of the business. However, when asked what was in the works for the space, Kelly was brimming with ideas, including feline
yoga class, a paint-and-sip event and hosting cat rescue groups to discuss kitty welfare. For the 39-year-old, PURR has the potential to be a socially impactful place. “[Cat cafes] are a really nice environment, she explains. “Everyone ends up talking to one another. She plans host private events for veterans, senior citizens, children with disabilities and the critically ill to visit PURR for free. Kelly plans to put PURR’s feline guests and residents first. Based on what she’s seen at other cat cafes, she plans to have floor-to-ceiling climbing structures for the cats to enjoy. “Obviously the welfare of the cats is the most important, she says. Are the Sox really legit World Series contenders? A look at the Sox’s odds of playing deep into October. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
A year ago on this very day, the absolute last thing on the Red Sox’s mind was their playoff chances. At 52-65, the Sox found themselves dead last in the AL East, and second to last in all of the AL, just two games ahead of the dismal A’s. Well, go ahead and flip those two numbers now, as at 65-52 the Sox stand just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the AL East. After a 7-13 stretch, they went into Tuesday night’s big game against the O’s on a four-game winning streak, fresh off a makeup game win over the first-place Cleveland Indians. David Ortiz and Mookie Betts are big reasons behind the team’s current stretch of wins. And that’s been the norm all season. Both Ortiz and Betts are at least in the discussion for AL MVP. Though Ortiz might not have much of a shot, the fact that we’re even talking about it in his age 40 season, and final MLB season, is something nobody expected. Betts being in the discussion isn’t much of a surprise. The Sox right-fielder has all the tools to be an All-Star for years and holds a .313 average with 91 runs, 26 home runs, and 84 RBI — most of which have come in the leadoff spot. Those two need to stay hot down the stretch for Boston to have a shot at the playoffs and a World Series. What else needs to happen? And what could go wrong to derail their run?
The Red Sox have one of the top outfields in the game. Will it be enough to propel them into the Fall Classic? GETTY IMAGES
October odds So how do the Red Sox’s World Series chances stack up against the cream of the American League? We’ll take a stab at it. • Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 • Cleveland Indians 4-1 • Texas Rangers 5-1 • Boston Red Sox – 6-1 • Baltimore Orioles 7-1 • Detroit Tigers 9-1 • Houston Astros 10-1 • Seattle Mariners 13-1
What needs to go right? It’s fun to watch the Red Sox blast hit after hit against the opponent this season, but
everybody knows that once October rolls around, the games get colder, the nights get longer, and the pitchers take control. If that’s the case, Boston needs its pitching staff to sharpen up. The Sox look to have a talented enough front four between David Price, Rick Porcello, Drew Pomeranz, and Steven Wright, but what about when the bright lights come on? We’re looking at you, David Price. The $1 millionper-start man has been disappointing in his first season with the Sox, but there’s still time for him to prove he’s worth the money. If the Sox find themselves in a onegame playoff, though, do they go with Price or the more reliable Porcello? It’s a tough call, but with Price’s track record, Porcello might be the play.
What could
go wrong? There’s no place like home, but unfortunately, the Sox will find themselves on the road a lot to finish the regular season. Twenty-nine of the final 45 games will be played
on the road. They’re currently on an 11-game road trip. Boston has hit .302 at Fenway (they’re the best home offense in the AL) but .263 on the road. That isn’t to say the Sox bats are quiet on the road — they’re still one
of the best — but they do rely more on pitching. Sox pitchers’ ERA is actually better on the road, with a 4.17 ERA away vs. a 4.32 ERA at home. Still, two games over .500 headed into Tuesday isn’t great.
Bear fights
For the second straight day, a major Patriots player was ejected from a joint practice with the Chicago Bears in Foxboro. A day after Malcolm Butler was booted for fighting with Alshon Jeffery, Pats center Bryan Stork was kicked out on Tuesday for throwing punches at Chicago LB John Timu. GETTY IMAGES

Aly Raisman competes in what is likely her final Olympic competition on Tuesday. GETTY IMAGES
Biles, Raisman shine one last time in Rio The duo concluded Rio gymnastics with a gold and silver medal.
Simone Biles showed off her sassy moves and explosive tumbles on the floor exercise to win a record-equaling fourth gold at the Olympics on Tuesday. A day after a wobbly performance on the balance beam ended the American’s hopes of leaving Rio with a record haul of five golds for a female gymnast, she was back on form to capture the floor title with 15.966 points. Aly Raisman completed a one-two for the United States by earning 15.500, while Briton Amy Tinkler burst into tears after a crowdpleasing floor display to Kenny G’s version of the song “Oh, Pretty
Woman” earned her the bronze. However, there was no doubting who was the star of the show. A sultry routine full of hip-swinging moves to samba music had the Brazilian crowd on their feet as Biles flew high into the air to execute her trademark element, a soaring double layout with half-twist at the end. Cries of “oohs” and “aahs” accompanied each of her complex tumbling passes, she drew gasps of admiration as she balanced her entire body weight on her right toes while spinning around twice and had the audience roaring their approval as she bounced her bottom off the floor to strike her final pose. The ear-to-ear grin, which had disappeared Monday after she ended
up with bronze on the beam, was back on show again and Biles gave the crowd a thumbs up as she waited for her score. The mark that did flash up not only earned her a fifth medal at her debut games, it was also the highest score of her four floor performances over the past 10 days. The 19-year-old team, all around, vault and floor exercise champion became the first woman in 32 years, and fifth overall, to win four golds at a single games. The Soviet Union’s Larisa Latynina (Melbourne 1956), Hungary’s Agnes Keleti (Melbourne 1956), Czech Vera Caslavska (Mexico City 1968) and Romania’s Ecaterina Szabo (Los Angeles 1984) were the only other women to have four golds at a single games.
