MEXICO AIR TRANSPORT DEAL BEGINS IN BID TO BOOST COMPETITION

1

An air transport deal between Mexico and the United States that aims to boost competition in the passenger and freight sectors came into force on Sunday, Mexico’s Communications and Transport Ministry said. The deal would open new routes for airlines to fly between the countries and allow for an unlimited number of flights. It also opens up the air freight market to more competition. While some analysts have welcomed the deal, saying it would lower airfares by boosting traffic, Mexican airline workers have complained it would put their country’s airlines at a disadvantage. The deal removes the main hurdle to a closer tie-up between Delta Air Lines and Grupo Aeromexico. The carriers have asked the U.S. government to grant them immunity from antitrust law so they can coordinate better flight connection times as well as prices, a request that cannot be granted until the aviation accord comes into force. 13 PEOPLE WOUNDED IN SHOOTING AT CONN. HOUSE PARTY

Thirteen people were shot and wounded when at least two shooters fired into a house party from a neighboring backyard in Bridgeport, Connecticut, early on Sunday, local police said. Police in the state’s most populous city were called to the house just before 1:30 a.m. and arrived to find 11 men and two women with gunshot wounds, Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said in an emailed statement. One of the casualties remains in critical condition after being hit in the face. Police think at least two shooters fired through the hedges from the backyard into a “large house party,” according to the statement. An investigation is ongoing and there was no immediate word on arrests or the possible motive. REUTERS

Firefighters had a Southern California wildfire mostly surrounded on Saturday, allowing thousands of evacuated residents to return to their houses as another fire further north moved perilously close to the historic Hearst Castle, officials said. The Blue Cut fire, named after a narrow gorge where it ignited about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles on Tuesday in an area called the Cajon Pass, has burned more than 37,000 acres and destroyed 105 homes and 213 outbuildings, said fire information officer Mike Lopez. COOLING DOWN AS HURRICANE SEASON HEATS UP

The storms that rocked much of the Northeast late Saturday afternoon and evening has put an end to the relentless heat and humidity which has dominated most of this summer. Finally a trueto-life cool front with a Canadian high pushing down from the north and west will keep temperatures and humidity at much more comfortable levels, as us human heat sponges will be able to walk a few blocks without feeling like a wet mop. This beautiful air mass should last through midweek, before increasing humidity and temperatures begin to return to the region by Friday. The tropics are heating up! We are now starting to get deep into the hur-

ricane season, as activity usually picks up in August and then peaks during mid-September, although the season continues into November. First up is Tropical Storm Fiona, located about 900 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands, and moving quickly to the west/northwest at about 16 mph. Fiona right now does not pose a threat to the islands or the U.S. mainland, and should continue to weaken and pass west of Bermuda during the week. Tropical trouble spot No. 2, located in the south, central Atlantic, right now remains weak and disorganized, but could slowly develop into a tropical storm taking on the name Gaston or

Located off the Cape Verde islands of Africa (usually where the bad boys or girls develop) has a lot to work with as the environment is primed for tropical storm development. The reason why these type of storms become sometimes the biggest and baddest ones is because they have thousands of miles of ocean water to fuel upon, if

We review the MBTA app finalists Here’s a rundown on the four apps competing to become the transit agency’s official app for riders this year.

CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

Need help navigating the MBTA? There’s an app for that. In fact, there are dozens of third-party apps for the Boston transit system alone, all with different features and levels of user-friendliness. While commuters may be familiar with the See Say public safety app from the MBTA police, so far the transit agency has taken a backseat when it comes to endorsing a specific travel app. But all of that is about to change: The MBTA launched a contest last July aimed at identifying a winning app that would become the agency’s official mobile tool. “While this array of [app] options allows the dedicated user to find the one that’s right for them, for many riders the proliferation of single-purpose apps can lead to confusion and does not always meet the T’s goal for a seamless customer service,” a statement announcing the contest said. “A single prominently endorsed app can provide a tremen-

dous improvement in customer experience.” The four finalists announced earlier this month — Moovel, Moovit, Swiftly and Transit — are all available to download for free on either iPhones or Androids. Here are some pros and cons of each:

Moovel Based in Germany, Moovel is known in that country for being the first app to offer riders the ability to buy etickets they could use on local transit systems. It’s not clear if that feature will be available at some point in the future for Boston, but

there are other features worth a look: Moovel is intuitive, opening up with your real-time GPS location on a Google Map layout, and featuring pins identifying all the nearest transit stops, including bus stations. There were few unique features included in this app, though its ease of use is a definite plus.

Moovit Moovit, based in Israel, boasts that it is the most popular transit app in the world, announcing in January that it serviced 28 million people in 700 cities in 58 countries. The app offers

WE’VE RECOVERED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR OUR CLIENTS

standard features like schedules, real-time arrival information and directions, but a unique offering is its “live ride” function: Activated by a user, the app begins to stream real-time information the company uses to calculate arrival times. It also allows the app to help you out, by sending you a ping to notify when you are approaching your stop. Another cool feature? The app’s “best way today” function, which, based on prevailing traffic conditions, calculates your fastest route to work or home and automatically sends it to your phone when it’s time to go.

Swiftly Swiftly’s big sell is its second-by-second countdown of real-time bus and train arrival estimates, which the company says are often accurate within a minute — not bad when you are trying to catch one of the MBTA’s sometimes elusive buses. The app’s directions feature not only offers estimates for the cost of transportation — including Uber — but the caloric output of, say, walking or biking to your destination instead.

Transit Transit’s design is the most minimalist of the four, but it is pretty: Its

bright colors and coollooking fonts give the app a very polished and straightforward feel. The app opens with a map interface and a series of transit stops, ranked by their distance from you, though it would be helpful if the stops were laid out on the map as well — riders need to click on a bus stop before the app will indicate where it is on a map. Transit also offers notifications that you’re approaching your stop, and calendar integration that allows the app to assume that you’ll want directions to a scheduled appointment. The MBTA will announce the winner on Sept. 6.

IT’S ABOUT TIME Tick, tick, tick. That’s what I say after I’ve been hiking in the woods and I’m picking the bugs off, but in this case it’s the sound of the presidential campaigns counting every minute left in the race. Here are my three things to watch — second by second — this week in politics: 1. NUMBER CRUNCHING TIME The post-convention bounce in the polls was more impressive for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump, but it’s all fading now. She still has a lead, but Pew last week put it around a mere four points. You can bet both campaigns will hawk-eye any new numbers this week and scrutinize the details. Keep watch on the state polls in the battlegrounds — places like Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. Trump needs some good news on those fronts or closing the gap nationally

won’t make much difference.

TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the book “My Year of Running Dangerously.” @tomforemancnn

2. TIME FOR A COMMERCIAL Team Trump was shaken up like a martini last week, now let’s see the results. With some new hard hitters at the top, the campaign is finally putting commercials up against Clinton, who has been pounding the New York billionaire with tough ads for weeks. Don’t expect to see them if you are outside those battleground states I mentioned, but stay tuned: I’d bet my house pretty soon we’ll see another big Trump event to fire up his followers and scoop up more of that free media coverage that has served him so well. 3. TROUBLED TIMES FOR OBAMACARE? Insurance giant Aetna is significantly cutting back on its participation in Obamacare. Other big insurers are, too. Expert analysts say the program is not in a “death spiral” as some Republicans have predicted, but the program is in some trouble and it comes at a terrible time for Clinton. She faces a choice: Keep talking it up as a success or back away from it fast? Either way, watch for GOPers to step up their criticism tying her hard to the program.

Twitter suspended 360,000 accounts for ‘promotion of terrorism’ Twitter Inc. has shut down 360,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts since the middle of 2015, the company said in a blog post. The microblogging platform has previously come under fire from Washington and thirdparty groups for not doing enough to stop accounts linked to Islamic State militants. But, since February, it has suspended an ad-

ditional 235,000 accounts, after halting 125,000 accounts since the mid2015, most of which were related to Islamic State. Twitter said its daily suspensions of terrorismlinked accounts have jumped 80 percent since last year and that it has reduced its response time. Watchdog groups praised Twitter’s swift response to online celebrations from Islamic extremists glorifying a July truck attack in Nice,

Health official warns Zika could spread across US Gulf One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach. The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome. Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of MiamiDade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts

neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States. “It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes

of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News. Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana - which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged — has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state. “There’s going to be

a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said. U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers. On Friday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach. REUTERS

Justin Bieber parties with mysterious blonde It sounds like Justin Bieber could have used some cold water after his night out on the town. Despite being linked to Sofia Richie — even going so far as to delete his Instagram after his fans made mean comments about her on social media — Bieber has already been spotted partying it up with another girl in London. The 22-year-old singer, who was headlining at the V Festival in the United Kingdom, was photographed leaving a nightclub with a mysterious blonde. Meanwhile, Richie was back in Los Angeles attending a Guns N’ Roses concert. The next night, the Canadian pop star turned

Tyra Banks to teach at Stanford Smizing isn’t the only thing you can learn from Tyra Banks. The supermodel is slated to teach a course at Stanford University’s graduate business school in the spring. She’ll be teaching a class called “Project You: Building and Extending Your Personal Brand” alongside Allison Klugar, a lecturer at the university. And as a model, television personality and entrepre-

neur, Banks has definitely had extensive experience in personal branding throughout her career. This won’t be the new mom’s first foray into a classroom — back in 2012, the former “America’s Next Top Model” creator completed a nineweek management program at Harvard Business School. It looks like someone isn’t too happy about Jordan Rodgers’ newfound love with ‘Bachelorette’ star JoJo Fletcher. Just weeks after the couple’s engagement aired on ABC, Rodgers’ ex-girlfriend, Brittany Farrar, has spoken out against the pair and accused Rodgers of cheating. This past week, she has taken to Instagram to rant about her former rela-

tionship with Rodgers. In one post, Farrar published a lengthy explanation about her decision to out Rodgers as a “prolific liar and cheater,” saying she isn’t looking for fame or money. “All I want is the same thing that anyone else who’s been wronged would want: the chance to share the truth,” she wrote. She also posted a video to her account showing receipts for flowers that Rodgers allegedly bought for another woman while the two were dating, according to Us magazine.

The video has since been deleted. But Rodgers’ past isn’t bringing the couple down — on Saturday, Fletcher and Rodgers pretty much fought fire with fire, posting their own photos on Instagram to prove that they’re still going strong amid the cheating rumors. On Saturday, Fletcher posted a photo of Rodgers holding her hand while wearing her engagement ring. The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.... & tacos,” the caption reads.

Lindsay Lohan wants to meet Vladimir Putin If you want Lindsay Lohan to appear on your talk show, you’d better be willing to cough up some serious cash — and have connections to powerful political figures. Lohan was recently asked to appear on “Pust govoryat,” a popular talk show in Russia. The host is looking to interview Lohan about her rocky relationship and breakup with Russian businessman Egor Tarabasov.

@Trevornoah Frank Ocean makes me feel like my senses have been dulled all my life and only now I’m experiencing things for the first time. #Blonde

In exchange for appearing on the show, Lohan sent over a list of demands to the television station’s executives — and it’s no joke. So far, the former child star has asked for a private jet, security, a Russian visa, 500,000 British pounds (roughly the equivalent of $650,000), a penthouse suite at the Ritz-Carlton and a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to TMZ.

Diane Kruger plays the wife of a wealthy businessman being protected by a troubled ex-soldier (Matthias Schoenaerts) in Alice Winocour’s “Disorder.” IFC FILMS

Diane Kruger won’t fall back on looks The actress talks “Disorder” and the difference between female and male directors. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Diane Kruger’s Hollywood breakthrough was playing Helen of Troy in “Troy.” Since then, the German-born actress has proven she’s capable of playing more than just a face. She’s shown her mettle in “Inglourious Basterds” and “Farewell, My Queen” and on FX’s “The Bridge.” In “Disorder,” a French-Belgian thriller, she’s back to playing a woman defined by her looks — a trophy wife to a wealthy businessman who might be caught up in some dodgy arms dealing. But this time it’s different: Jessie, her character, proves smart and even resourceful when she and her son become targets for aggression, especially when it becomes clear the troubled former solider (Matthias Schoenaerts) hired to protect them might be too damaged to do his job. Because “Disorder” is directed by a woman, Alice Winocour, it makes you read a lot into Jessie — to not judge her as just a rich man’s wife. If this movie had been directed by a man, I don’t know how I comfortable I would have been playing

this kept trophy wife. She could easily be just a pretty face. I think the character has so many dimensions. I enjoy the arc of the character. When [Jessie’s] only looked [at] from afar, there’s something the way [Winocour] films it that brings out an emotion. You’ve said female directors are really tough to work with. Where does Winocour rank there? Oh, she’s a tough director. She needs to see what she doesn’t like before she can find what she does like. There’s a lot of takes. She’s very precise. Some may want to call it anal. She can do 25 shots of a door opening. Do you find male directors are a bit less intense with actresses? Not that male directors are not demanding, but I find women, especially when it comes to their female characters, to be much more demanding than men. They always look for something more realistic. They’re usually not afraid to show, say, a woman being hysterical. A lot of men don’t want to see women cry or shout. They’re very involved in your physical appearance. It’s my experience that women don’t want you to wear makeup or get your hair done in a certain way.

They’re just more direct and demanding. Your co-star, Matthias Schoenaerts, plays a former solider with PTSD. Schoenaerts went very Method for this: For instance, he’d barely sleep, and at one point had to be hospitalized. What was your experience working with a co-star who was really going there? He was a very generous partner. We didn’t hang out at night, so I guess he was up when I was asleep. [Laughs] He would sleep during lunch breaks or would go and lay down. He’s one of the

reasons I wanted to be in the film, because I loved him in “Bullhead.” That was the first movie in Europe where people were like, “Who is this guy?” And physically he’s very atypical for a Belgian. He’s really tall and has an animalistic side to him — very physical. But he’s not afraid to show emotion. He’s not the tough guy with a gun. He didn’t disappoint.

‘A breath of fresh air’ Lisa Hannigan found her inspiration once again thanks to The National’s Aaron Dessner. ILANA KAPLAN @lanikaps letters@metro.us

For Lisa Hannigan’s latest album “At Swim, the singer-songwriter struggled to write new material while living in London — her home away from home. The 35-year-old Kilcloon, Ireland, native was on the road for some time — almost two years in support of 2011’s “Passenger — but it was an email that Hannigan received from The National’s Aaron Dessner that sparked something inside of her once again. Hannigan ended up working with Dessner and rediscovered the collaborative spirit she had missed in Dublin. We caught up with Hannigan about working with Dessner, her favorite songs to write and who she’d love to collaborate with in the future. Tell me about the concept for this record. My last record I toured for a long time — two and a half years. I had found it difficult to be on the road. When I came back to start my third record, I had this really big hill in front of me. It didn’t come as easily as I hoped it

would. I moved out of the house I had lived in for a long time. I was between London and Dublin. I just felt a little unsure of myself. It took a long time because I had that feeling of being adrift or in-between. That’s the situation that the record came out of. What was the most challenging part of writing this record? I think it was just the writing of it, actually. I kept telling myself you write a lot of crappy songs before you write the good ones. When you’re in a difficult situation, you can be a little bit at a loss when you’re writing a song. That was most of it. I asked my friend Joe Henry if he could send some words and that worked very quickly. I got into it the swing eventually. I started working with Aaron Dessner [of The National] on “Into The Blue. A breath of fresh air came in n to my con-fused state e and really helped me e get my focus again. What have you learned the most over the years from making music? Well, that it can be very hard sometimes, I suppose. It can be lonely. That’s what was

How did you get connected with Aaron? I just got an email from him out of the blue. It was amazing. We then started to become musical pen pals. He would send me beautiful music. I would make recordings and send them back. What was your favorite song to write for this record?

I don’t know. The songs were so sporadic. Every time I finished one I liked, I loved it so much. The sense of pure joy came with each of the songs. In terms of the easiest to write, it was probably “Prayer for the Dying because it came out of such an emotional situation. The song felt very separate and easy in that moment because it was an

expression about emotion. But, I love them all individually. Who do you dream of collaborating with in the future? I’ve always been a big fan of collaborating. I’ve always wanted to work with David Byrne. I love his show so much and how he presents his music. That would be my dream.

Nick and Megan sitting in a tree The comedy power couple presents “Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally — Summer of 69: No Apostrophe.” A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman are, of course, famous television stars to you, what with beloved comic roles in “Will & Grace” and “Childrens Hospital” (her) and “Parks and Recreation” and “Fargo” (him). Beyond that, the pair are a wryly humorous, amorous, loveydovey married couple (coming up on 13 years of wedlock in September) and co-workers on several projects such as their staged, comic-andmusical look-see into sex and fidelity, “Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally — Summer of 69: No Apostrophe.” We caught up with the happily marrieds en route to rehearsal. You live together. You work together. That’s charming. But at a certain point, when does it get to be too much? Megan Mullally: It only seems like we work together all the time, but it’s not that really. That’s why when we do do something as one, it’s fun. I think even if we did work together all the time, that would be OK. We get along really well. Not long ago we went on vacation for a whole month and that was cool. Nick Offerman: If there

is a limit as to how much we can stand being around each other, we haven’t found it. Our work apart from each other means that we’re on-again, off-again. When we’re together, we usually know that it’s finite — say, touring this for two months, then going out and doing something apart from each other. It’s a constant dance.

If you go Friday, Aug. 26 Wilbur Theatre 246 Tremont St. Boston thewilbur.com

I know that you two began your romance between 2000 and 2001. Who made the initial move on the other? Mullally: He did. He asked me — are you kidding? Was there a theatrical model for this? Some of it feels like Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.” It seems as if Stanley Donen’s “Two for the Road” is an influence. Offerman: I can’t believe that you just said Noel Coward and Stanley Donen. Both are very generous things to say about our show. When and how did you decide that your sex and married lives were unique enough to brand as entertainment? Offerman: We have a good time together, and we thought we could translate that onto a stage. We’re just two people whose relationship requires all the nurture that any close relationship requires. But, the media has mythologized our time as one, so that when we were looking for an excuse to work together, we built a show

around that and it was a natural fit. Plus, we both love dirty humor and we love to sing songs, so we wrote dirty, funny songs. Mullally: Those extensive articles — and they were funny — chronicling the minute details of our lives together cracked us up. The press really seemed in it to win it where our relationship was concerned, so we decided to exploit that, with the premise being that, yes, ours is the greatest love story ever told. Offerman: And, that yes, with a little practice, you can have this fairy-tale life, just like ours.

Everything you need to know about careers in transportation, coming Monday, August 29th To advertise, contact (617) 532-0100 or adsboston@metro.us

So you’ve almost completed that coveted summer internship — kudos and congrats! Now comes the hard part. That swanky line on your résumé means zilch if you don’t take full advantage of the opportunity. Otherwise, you’re wasting your time. Sounds harsh? Welcome to the real world. As summer internships wind down, make sure you end on high note by following these must-dos (and don’ts):

Cultivate your references “Making good contacts is one of the key takeaways from an internship, and too few interns maintain those ties,” says Allison Cheston, a career advisor based in New York. Handsdown, you must leave an internship with references from your bosses — but that’s just the beginning. “Make sure you connect on LinkedIn with every-

one you meet during the internship. Also, ask your supervisor and colleagues to recommend you on LinkedIn, and reciprocate,” she continues.

Don’t leave without a proper goodbye First, make sure you review what projects you’re working on a week before leaving, and don’t leave any work unfinished. “This way, if there is a project or assignment too big to tackle upon the conclusion of your internship, you will be able express your needs and discuss a way to prioritize your tasks,” says Heather Huhman, a Gen Y career expert and the founder of the PR firm Come Recommended. Also, don’t skip the thank you note. Even if you didn’t have best experience, “it’s important to thank your boss for the opportunity, as well as mention one or two of the valuable skills you learned.”

Leave with an accomplishment story After an internship, you should be able to outline a problem you were presented with, and how you resolved it. Then it’s your job to turn that accom-

plishment into a story. “For example, let’s say you were tasked with increasing the company’s Twitter followers. Your accomplishment story would walk future employers through exactly how you accomplished this, and the percentage increase in Twitter followers as a result of your actions,” explains Huhman.

Don’t worry about brownnosing This fear is generally unfounded. Why not be a standout superstar? “In terms of an employer [perspective], I love when my interns take initiative and are really truly interested in my company’s success,” says Huhman.

Be honest about your experience If you have an exit interview at the conclusion of your internship, don’t lie or try to sugarcoat your feelings. Says Huhman, “It’s extremely important to be open and honest with your boss. Internships are a learning experience for both the intern and the employer, so any feedback you can provide about the program will help the employer.”

JOBS

Should you take a job just for the money? Because exposure can’t pay your bills. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa

the money? Whether you already have a lucrative offer or are considering making the jump, heed Ditta’s advice:

alizah.salario@metro.us

Clarify your values In an ideal world, we’d all have our dream jobs — and be getting paid handsomely. But because we live in an imperfect world, most of us walk a delicate balance between doing a job we enjoy and doing a job that pays the bills. If we’re lucky — even some of the time — we have both. But when financial obligations or external pressures foist us into difficult situations, we tend to start thinking about finding jobs that pay well, period, says Anne-Marie Ditta, an executive career coach and public speaker. So when — if ever — should you take a job for

Ditta strongly advises against taking a job for money if you’re certain it will bring daily misery. However, if the gig falls somewhere in the gray area between dream job and toiling in a gulag, the consider the metrics Ditta uses to gauge if higher pay is worth the personal costs: “Are the culture and environment in alignment with your values? Will the position challenge you? Will it make good use of your skills and your interests? asks Ditta. If you can answer “yes to one or more of these questions, then the job is worth the extra money in the bank.

Be clear on your purpose “My experience is that when people go just for the money, I see them back in my office six months to a year later. It’s not going to work out, says Ditta. Taking what Ditta calls an “in-the-meantime job is a legitimate choice, but you must know why you got into it. That means setting one, two and five year goals for yourself — and actively figuring out your exit strategy for that temporary gig. “You have to make time in your schedule to do that process of career exploration, says Ditta.

Accept when it’s time to change For those frustrated with their meager earnings, forgoing a career passion

for a well-paying gig can be tempting. But how do you know you’re ready to make the switch? “If you think about it infrequently, then maybe it’s not a big issue. But if you’re losing sleep and you’re getting stressed out about it, that’s when it’s gone over the line, says Ditta. You may very well decide to stay put, but people who consistently think about alternate career options “owe it to themselves to explore a transition. Blazing your own trail, suggests Ditta, is crucial. “If you don’t know where you’re going you might end up in Alaska with a bikini.

The Patriots will have Jimmy Garoppolo under center for the first four games of the season — instead of suspended Tom Brady. What could possibly go wrong?

GETTY IMAGES

What if Jimmy Garoppolo sucks? An 0-4 doomsday scenario for Patriots. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

It’s such a common belief locally and nationally that it’s become downright scary. “Things won’t be that bad with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback for the first four weeks of the 2016 season and he’ll lead the Patriots to a 3-1 or, at worst, 2-2 record.” The crowd that believes Bill Belichick is more responsible than Tom Brady for the Patriots’ success over these last 15 years surely believes that, but even

the TB12 G.O.A.T. group thinks 3-1 for Garoppolo is more than doable. In the name of old school Boston sports skyis-falling worry, let’s go over a scenario in which the Patriots could be 0-4 when Brady returns on Oct. 9 against Cleveland.

Sept. 11 at Cardinals The “1” in everyone’s “3-1” is the opener. Sunday Night Football, on the road, against the 2015 NFC runner-up may be too big a stage for Garoppolo — a kid who was 9 years old when Mo Lewis promoted Brady to starting QB of the NEP. Garoppolo is just 24 years old and has not yet taken a significant NFL snap. He had great

success in college, but let’s remember that he wasn’t exactly playing against the SEC West. The defensive ends from Morehead State and the University of Tennessee at Martin aren’t walking through that door — but a pissed off Chandler Jones is.

Sept. 18 vs. Dolphins The Dolphins’ new head coach, Adam Gase, was with Peyton Manning in Denver when Manning had his most flawless playoff performance against the Patriots. In the 2013 AFC Championship game, Manning completed 32-of-43 passes for 400 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in

a 26-16 Broncos win. Manning finished with a 118.4 passer rating. While Manning acted as his own offensive coordinator during his career, no doubt Gase was taking notes on how to take down a Belichick defense while in Denver. Gase is now working with Ryan Tannehill, who has been as successful against Belichick defenses as any QB recently. Tannehill is 2-2 against the Pats the past two years.

lo will be facing a Texans defense that allowed just 19.6 points per game last season (seventh best in the NFL). Brady surely is able to dominate a Patriots-style defense as the Texans are New England-lite and we saw the Pats go into Houston and win, 27-6, just nine months ago. Reading Bill O’Brien’s defense, however, won’t be as easy for Jimmy G.

Sept. 22 vs. Texans

Rex Ryan isn’t saying it (for once), but he’s got to be salivating at the thought of playing a Bradyless Patriots team. Ryan had some success against the Patriots, particularly early in the season, during the open-

This game is on a short week as it will be played on a Thursday night. If the Pats enter this game 0-2, there will already be legit panic and Garoppo-

ing portion of his tenure with the Jets. In his first season in New York, the Jets upset the Pats in the Meadowlands, 16-9 in Week 2. The next season, Ryan and the Jets again beat the Pats — this time by a score of 28-14. In 2011, the Patriots again suffered an earlyseason loss — falling at the Bills (Ryan was still with the Jets though), 34-31. In 2012, there were two September losses and in 2014 there were two September losses. It’s been said before, but the best time to get the Patriots is early in the season. Early in the season with an untested QB? That could potentially spell 0-4.

Team USA thumps way to gold medal The Americans eliminated all doubt with a drubbing of Serbia on Sunday. A ruthless United States pounded Serbia, 96-66, to claim a third straight Olympic men’s basketball title on Sunday, giving coach Mike Krzyzewski a golden send-off. After scrapping to a tense three-point win over Serbia in the group round, the United States quickly removed any suspense from the rematch, surging to a 52-29 halftime lead then cruising to their 25th straight win on Olympic hardwood. Kevin Durant led the assault, pouring in 30 points including 24 in a brilliant opening half, while DeMarcus Cousins was again a beast on the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds. The rout capped a brilliant tenure as Team USA head coach for Krzyzewski, who signs off after guiding the U.S. to three consecutive Olympic gold medals and an astounding 88-1 record in international competition. The only blemish on “Coach K’s” otherwise perfect résumé is a semifinal loss to Greece at the 2006 world championships.

The game was also likely the last for captain Carmelo Anthony, who embraced Krzyzewski on the sidelines when he was substituted in the final minutes. If it was indeed Anthony’s international swan song, U.S. basketball’s only four-time Olympian exits with three gold medals and a pack of U.S. team records. With the victory, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson joined one of basketball’s most exclusive clubs, becoming just the eighth and ninth players to win Olympic and FIBA world championship gold and an NBA title. The final was a classic David and Goliath matchup, with basketball super power the United States, now winners of 15 of the 18 Olympics in which they have participated, going up against tiny Serbia, who were appearing in the Olympic tournament for the first time as an independent nation. Serbia, however, also brought a considerable basketball pedigree to the gold medal game, having been part of the former Yugoslavia, once a European basketball power. More significantly, Serbia had given the

United States their biggest scare in Rio, battling the Americans right down to the final buzzer in a Group A clash that offered up at least the possibility of an intriguing final. But the United States would not be caught off guard again, their class evident from the start. “We played them already, so we were familiar with the faces and familiar with their game,” U.S. guard Paul George said. “It was about taking the fight to them, and I thought we did a great job of doing that tonight.” The Americans had difficulty breaking down a determined Serb defense in the opening quarter but still ground out a 19-15 lead. Then the U.S. shifted into top gear, blowing past the overwhelmed Serbs to open up a 23-point halftime advantage. “They played better than us,” said Serbian center Vladimir Simac. “We fought and gave it everything, playing for our people. I think we made them [proud].” “This is a golden silver medal.” Earlier, Spain edged Australia, 89-88, to take home the bronze. STEVE KEATING
