MEXICO AIR TRANSPORT DEAL BEGINS IN BID TO BOOST COMPETITION
1
An air transport deal between Mexico and the United States that aims to boost competition in the passenger and freight sectors came into force on Sunday, Mexico’s Communications and Transport Ministry said. The deal would open new routes for airlines to fly between the countries and allow for an unlimited number of flights. It also opens up the air freight market to more competition. While some analysts have welcomed the deal, saying it would lower airfares by boosting traffic, Mexican airline workers have complained it would put their country’s airlines at a disadvantage. The deal removes the main hurdle to a closer tie-up between Delta Air Lines and Grupo Aeromexico. The carriers have asked the U.S. government to grant them immunity from antitrust law so they can coordinate better flight connection times as well as prices, a request that cannot be granted until the aviation accord comes into force. 13 PEOPLE WOUNDED IN SHOOTING AT CONN. HOUSE PARTY

Thirteen people were shot and wounded when at least two shooters fired into a house party from a neighboring backyard in Bridgeport, Connecticut, early on Sunday, local police said. Police in the state’s most populous city were called to the house just before 1:30 a.m. and arrived to find 11 men and two women with gunshot wounds, Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said in an emailed statement. One of the casualties remains in critical condition after being hit in the face. Police think at least two shooters fired through the hedges from the backyard into a “large house party,” according to the statement. An investigation is ongoing and there was no immediate word on arrests or the possible motive. REUTERS

Firefighters had a Southern California wildfire mostly surrounded on Saturday, allowing thousands of evacuated residents to return to their houses as another fire further north moved perilously close to the historic Hearst Castle, officials said. The Blue Cut fire, named after a narrow gorge where it ignited about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles on Tuesday in an area called the Cajon Pass, has burned more than 37,000 acres and destroyed 105 homes and 213 outbuildings, said fire information officer Mike Lopez. COOLING DOWN AS HURRICANE SEASON HEATS UP
The storms that rocked much of the Northeast late Saturday afternoon and evening has put an end to the relentless heat and humidity which has dominated most of this summer. Finally a trueto-life cool front with a Canadian high pushing down from the north and west will keep temperatures and humidity at much more comfortable levels, as us human heat sponges will be able to walk a few blocks without feeling like a wet mop. This beautiful air mass should last through mid-week, before increasing humidity and temperatures begin to return to the region by Friday. The tropics are heating up! We are now starting to get deep into the
hurricane season, as activity usually picks up in August and then peaks during mid-September, although the season continues into November. First up is Tropical Storm Fiona, located about 900 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands, and moving quickly to the west/ northwest at about 16 mph. Fiona right now does not pose a threat to the islands or the U.S. mainland, and should continue to weaken and pass west of Bermuda during the week. Tropical trouble spot No. 2, located in the south, central Atlantic, right now remains weak and disorganized, but could slowly develop into a tropical storm taking on the name Gaston or

Located off the Cape Verde islands of Africa (usually where the bad boys or girls develop) has a lot to work with as the environment is primed for tropical storm development. The reason why these type of storms become sometimes the biggest and baddest ones is because they have thousands of miles of ocean water to fuel

Bill Nye talks climate change and why our national parks are so important to the election
FLICKR COMMONS PROPIAVISION
Bill Nye ‘The Science Guy’ gets political. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
How will New Yorkers be able to control the colors on the spire of One World Trade Center? With electricity. [laughs] It’ll be a game. There’s a game the people will play there at the park that will be connected to the lighting of the [One World Trade Center]. Have you found your park? This summer for the first time I went to Glacier National Park which was spectacular. The official line is the glaciers will be gone by 2030, but I’ll tell you on the record, that it’s my opinion — the rangers told me — they don’t think the glaciers will be in five or six years. By 2025, the glaciers will be gone.
You were just in an ice drilling camp in Greenland and you posted online that “evidence of climate change is overwhelming.” What did you see? They drill into the ice, straight down over 2 miles and bring up cylinders of solid ice that contain bubbles of the ancient atmosphere and water of ancient snow. Ancient snow has different ratios of neutrons from which scientists can infer the temperature of the ocean and the temperature of the cloud from which the snowflakes fell and it directly captures the ancient atmosphere. They can see the amount of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases that are trapped in there and everybody’s very concerned about climate change who studies these. The thing that we’re really concerned about now is “abrupt climate change,” where there’s clear evidence — irrefutable evidence — that the Earth’s climate
has changed really fast a few times in the past. Having humans pump all this carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is just making it go faster. What would you like to see the next U.S. president do? The Solutions Project, [civil engineers] have done a study showing that you can run the United States renewably right now — there is enough wind and solar right now — if you just decided to do it. … So we hope the next president will enable investment in renewable energy, move to electrifying ground transportation, providing clean water to everyone in the world [and] reliable access to the internet to everyone in the world with renewable electricity. I, as an engineer who grew up in the United States, I’m a U.S. citizen from birth. I’m a patriot. I want the U.S. to lead the world in these things rather than sitting back trying
to fight climate change deniers and a president with a whole political system backing him to continue to burn fossil fuels for electricity. We want to get away from that as soon as possible. If you visit your national parks, you will have a sense of how important it is. I’m not kidding. Any final thoughts? Well, this is the 100th anniversary of the national parks and we really want to raise awareness of them. When you go to vote, please take the environment into account. … Go find a national park this year, this week, and realize the legacy our ancestors have left us — these beautiful spaces — and how important they are to preserve. The National Park Service Centennial is Monday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The event is free. Nye’s presentation and interactive event starts at 7:45 p.m.

Crown Heights riot remembered 25 years later Twenty-five years ago, black and Jewish residents in Brooklyn clashed in a violent threeday riot. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
For three days, demonstrators clashed in the streets of Crown Heights, when, from Aug. 19-21, 1991, racial tension gave way to violence, looting and destruction of homes and property. Riots broke out after two 7-year-old children of Guyanese immigrants were struck by a car in a motorcade for a leader of a Jewish sect.
One child, Gavin Cato, was killed, and the second, Angela Cato, was severely injured in the crash. This event sparked violent tension between black and Jewish communities in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Yankel Rosenbaum, a Hasidic scholar visiting from Australia, was stabbed to death just hours after the children were struck. On Friday, Rosenbaum’s brother Norman reportedly visited the spot where he was killed. On Sunday there was also the One Crown Height event to mark the anniversary. But Rosenbaum’s brother was critical of the festival. “It’s insensitive,”
he told ABC7, adding that its flier mentions “the events of Aug. 20, 1991,” not to the actual violence. “It’s a trivialization of a very, very serious period of time, of a series of incidents culminating in my brother’s murder.” One of the organizers, Devorah Halberstam, whose 16-year-old son was killed on the Brooklyn Bridge in 1994 in a shooting aimed at a vanload of Jewish students, told ABC7 that her “total intention in this was to do right by Yankel and Gavin Cato.” She added that she wanted to bring people together in a positive way to unite and move forward as they marked the anniversary.

Stepmom arraigned in strangling death of 9-year-old girl The stepmother of a 9-year-old Queens girl whose bruised body was found in a bathtub has been arraigned in her death, officials said. Arjun Samdhi Pardas, 55, the stepmom to Ashdeep Kaur, is accused of strangling the young girl who was in her care. According to family members, Pardas has a history of abuse against Ashdeep, who had arrived in the United States just three months earlier to live with her father, Sukhjinder Singh, the New York Daily News reported. “[Pardas] was not treating her really good,” Ashdeep’s uncle Manjinder TWITTER/ @NYDAILIYNEWS
Singh told the Daily News. “The girl told me she got beat up by her. Twice she told me she grabbed her and threw her on the bed. I was not thinking she would kill her.” The girl’s body was found Friday evening by a woman who shares part of the family’s Richmond Hill home, the Daily News reported. Ashdeep was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The medical examiner’s office has determined that the cause of death was manual strangulation. Pardas was later located at her ex-husband’s house, according to prosecutors. Two children
were found with her when she was arrested, and they were put under the care of city child protective services, the Daily News reported. A witness saw Pardas leaving her home at about 5:30 p.m. Friday along with her ex-husband Raymond Narayan, and her two grandchildren ages 3 and 5, according to the Queens district attorney’s office. When the witness asked about Ashdeep’s whereabouts Pardas allegedly said that the 9-year-old girl was in the bathroom and was waiting for her father to pick her up. That was when the witness, apparently the neighbor, became con-
cerned, as the bathroom light had been on since 11 a.m., and called the father, who instructed her to break open the bathroom door, prosecutors said. When police showed up at Narayan’s house to find Pardas, she refused to come out, and they weren’t let in for more than an hour, officials said. They took both into custody, charging Pardas with second-degree, and holding her husband on charges of obstructing governmental administration. Pardas was arraigned Sunday on the murder charge, and ordered held without bail. She is set to return to court on Sept. 2.ALEXIS SACHDEV

New law cuts English language requirement for NYC cab drivers The change is the result of a new law that Mayor Bill de Blasio signed in April and went into effect on Friday eliminating the English proficiency exam for taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers. The average New York City taxi driver may still be sassy, but will not be required to speak English any longer. It is the latest big change for cab drivers as policymakers and regulators try to adapt the city’s requirements to demographic and technological changes. The legislation created a single license for all taxicab and for-hire vehicles and eliminated the English language proficiency test, according to a New York City Council website.
The council described the requirement as “a significant barrier to entry to driving a taxi” in a statement announcing the bill and other related legislation in January. New York is home to nearly 144,000 active drivers of medallion cabs, livery cars and other forhire vehicles, according to a 2016 report from the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Over 90 percent of those drivers are born outside the United States. The Taxi and Limousine Commission is working with the mayor’s office on a potential education program that would include English language vocabulary for drivers, a spokeswoman for the TLC said. The new law was part of a broader legislative package that also included a bill to require the TLC to directly administer a health care services program. REUTERS

Pfizer nears deal to acquire Medivation for close to $14 billion Pfizer Inc. is in advanced talks to acquire U.S. cancer drug company Medivation Inc. for close to $14 billion, as it seeks to boost its oncology portfolio, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday. Pfizer has agreed to pay a little more than $80 per share for Medivation, one of the people said, a substantial
premium to the $52.50 offer for Medivation that France’s Sanofi SA made in April, which eventually resulted in the company putting itself up for sale. Medivation shares ended trading in New York on Friday at $67.16. Reuters reported earlier this week that Pfizer, Sanofi, Merck & Co. Inc., Celgene Corp and Gilead Sciences Inc had submitted expressions of interest to acquire Medivation.
The strong acquisition interest in the San Franciscobased company illustrates how demand for new cancer treatments, which can possibly add years to patients’ lives, could spell billions of dollars in revenue to the companies that own them. Pfizer has so far prevailed in the auction for Medivation and could announce a deal as early as Monday, although the negotiations still could fall apart
at the last minute, the people said. The deal is expected to be paid for by Pfizer in its entirety, or at least mostly, with cash, one of the people said. The sources asked not to be identified because the negotiations are confidential. Pfizer and Medivation declined to comment. The Financial Times first reported on Pfizer nearing a deal for Medivation on Sunday. REUTERS

BRIEF Gaza militant rocket hits Israel, Israel responds with airstrikes, shells Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip launched a rocket that landed in the Israeli border town of Sderot on Sunday and Israeli aircraft and tanks responded by shelling the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun, the army and police said. The rocket caused no injuries or damage in Sderot, where it landed in a residential area,
police said. An Israeli shell during an initial retaliation damaged a Beit Hanoun water tower and there were no casualties, local residents said. Multiple airstrikes later in the evening hit at least 30 different sites in the Gaza Strip belonging to Hamas, the smaller Islamic Jihad and other militant groups and two people were lightly hurt, Gaza health officials said.
A music festival in Sderot attended by hundreds of Israelis was temporarily disrupted as people sought shelter, television footage showed. The Israeli military said aircraft had attacked targets in the northern Gaza Strip and added that since the beginning of the year, 14 Gaza rockets had hit Israel. Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said in a statement that the
military “remains committed to the stability of the region and operated in order to bring quiet to the people of southern Israel.” “When terrorists in Hamas’ Gaza Strip, driven by a radical agenda based on hatred, attack people in the middle of the summer vacation, their intentions are clear — to inflict pain, cause fear and to terrorize,” Lerner said. Turkey’s Erdogan blames child bomber for attack that killed 51 The attack was the deadliest in a series of bombings in Turkey this year, and President Tayyip Erdogan said Islamic State was likely behind it. A suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 carried out an attack on a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Saturday that killed at least 51 people, the president said. “Initial evidence suggests it was a Daesh attack,” Erdogan said in Istanbul on Sunday, using an Arabic name for the hardline Sunni Islamist group. He said 69 people were in the hospital and 17 were “heavily injured.” A destroyed suicide vest was found at the blast site, officials said. Islamic State has been blamed for other similar attacks in Turkey, often targeting Kurdish gatherings in an effort to inflame ethnic tensions. The deadliest was last October, when suicide bombers killed more than 100 people at a rally of pro-Kurdish and labor activists in Ankara. Saturday’s attack comes with Turkey still in shock just a month after Erdogan and the
government survived an attempted coup by rogue military officers, which Ankara blames on U.S.based Islamist preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen has denied the charge. The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said the wedding party was for one of its members. The groom was among those injured, but the bride was not hurt. The bomb went off as guests spilled out into the streets of the city close to the Syrian border after the traditional henna night party, when guests have their hands and feet painted. Women and children, including a 3-month-old baby, were among the dead, witnesses said. Blood and burn marks stained the walls of the narrow lane where the blast hit. Women in white and checkered scarves wept outside the morgue waiting for word on missing relatives. “The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing,” said 25-year-old Veli Can. “There was blood and body parts everywhere.” “We want to end these massacres,” witness Ibrahim Ozdemir said. “We are in pain, especially the women and children.” REUTERS

Health official warns Zika could spread across US Gulf One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach. The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome. Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of MiamiDade County in Florida. a lot of problems getting rid of standing water that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said. U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers. On Friday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach. REUTERS

of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News. Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana - which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged — has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state. “There’s going to be

IT’S ABOUT TIME Tick, tick, tick. That’s what I say after I’ve been hiking in the woods and I’m picking the bugs off, but in this case it’s the sound of the presidential campaigns counting every minute left in the race. Here are my three things to watch — second by second — this week in politics: 1. NUMBER CRUNCHING TIME The post-convention bounce in the polls was more impressive for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump, but it’s all fading now. She still has a lead, but Pew last week put it around a mere four points. You can bet both campaigns will hawk-eye any new numbers this week and scrutinize the details. Keep watch on the state polls in the battlegrounds — places like Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. Trump needs some good news on those fronts or closing the gap nationally
won’t make much difference.

2. TIME FOR A COMMERCIAL Team Trump was shaken up like a martini last week, now let’s see the results. With some new hard hitters at the top, the campaign is finally putting commercials up against Clinton, who has been pounding the New York billionaire with tough ads for weeks. Don’t expect to see them if you are outside those battleground states I mentioned, but stay tuned: I’d bet my house pretty soon we’ll see another big Trump event to fire up his followers and scoop up more of that free media coverage that has served him so well. 3. TROUBLED TIMES FOR OBAMACARE? Insurance giant Aetna is significantly cutting back on its participation in Obamacare. Other big insurers are, too. Expert analysts say the program is not in a “death spiral” as some Republicans have predicted, but the program is in some trouble and it comes at a terrible time for Clinton. She faces a choice: Keep talking it up as a success or back away from it fast? Either way, watch for GOPers to step up their criticism tying her hard to the program.

Tech industry’s legal shield is feeling the heat Section 230, which protects website operators from liabilities caused by users, is being put into question. When San Francisco passed an ordinance this year imposing fines on home rental companies for listings by hosts not registered with the city, Airbnb sued, saying the measure runs afoul of Section 230 of the U.S. Communications Decency Act. The case is the latest test of Section 230, a federal law that has been a trusty workhorse for the technology industry. By protecting website operators from liability for content posted by others, the 20-year-old statute helped pave the way for the explosion of social

media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as online marketplaces, including Amazon and eBay. But detractors say the law has been applied too broadly, and judges have pushed back in a string of recent cases. Lawyers for web operators are closely watching the Airbnb case where the utility of the legal shield is at issue. Section 230 was intended to protect free speech online by removing liability for a newspaper, say, for libelous comments posted on their websites by readers. The law has shielded social media and e-commerce sites from activities not even imagined when it was enacted in 1996. Amazon.com used it to beat back part of a lawsuit over the sale of stolen photos. EBay used it to defeat
a claim over the sale of an unsafe product. Craigslist prevailed in a case alleging it had “knowingly and intentionally facilitated prostitution. In those cases and others, websites successfully argued any offending offerings on their pages were not their responsibility because they had been posted by others. In its lawsuit against San Francisco, Airbnb says it cannot be held responsible for ensuring hosts have complied with the city’s laws. The disputed ordinance requires Airbnb and similar services to verify that people offering short-term rentals on their sites have registered with the city. The services would face fines of $1,000 each time they process a booking from an unregistered host. REUTERS
Some say Section 230 has been stretched too far. Since June 2015, judges have rejected Section 230 defenses in at least 17 cases, according to research by Santa Clara Law professor Eric Goldman. While it is diďŹƒcult to comprehensively track cases where the law is asserted, he said it has been a rough period for the defense. In one case, Twitter cited the law in an attempt to persuade a San Francisco judge to dismiss a suit ďŹ led by a woman receiving unwanted tweets on her phone. The woman’s mobile provider had given her a recycled phone number, and it was still receiving Twitter feeds its former owner had signed up for. She repeatedly asked Twitter to stop the feed, texting “STOP,â€? but it kept coming. In her suit, she asserted Twitter was violating consumer protection laws against unsolicited calls and texts. Twitter argued that Section 230 should bar the lawsuit because its users composed the tweets, not the company. But a judge ruled against Twitter’s motion this year, saying that what mattered is who sent the tweets, not who composed them.

Twitter suspended 360,000 accounts for ‘promotion of terrorism’ Twitter Inc. has shut down 360,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts since the middle of 2015, the company said in a blog post on Thursday. The microblogging platform has previously come under fire from Washington and thirdparty groups for not doing enough to stop accounts linked to Islamic State militants. But, since February, it has suspended an ad-
ditional 235,000 accounts, after halting 125,000 accounts since the mid2015, most of which were related to Islamic State. Twitter said its daily suspensions of terrorismlinked accounts have jumped 80 percent since last year and that it has reduced its response time. Watchdog groups praised Twitter’s swift response to online celebrations from Islamic extremists glorifying a July truck attack in Nice,

Justin Bieber parties with mysterious blonde It sounds like Justin Bieber could have used some cold water after his night out on the town. Despite being linked to Sofia Richie — even going so far as to delete his Instagram after his fans made mean comments about her on social media — Bieber has already been spotted partying it up with another girl in London. The 22-year-old singer, who was headlining at the V Festival in the United Kingdom, was photographed leaving a nightclub with a mysterious blonde. Meanwhile, Richie was back in Los Angeles attending a Guns N’ Roses concert. The next night, the Canadian pop star turned

Tyra Banks to teach at Stanford Smizing isn’t the only thing you can learn from Tyra Banks. The supermodel is slated to teach a course at Stanford University’s graduate business school in the spring. She’ll be teaching a class called “Project You: Building and Extending Your Personal Brand” alongside Allison Klugar, a lecturer at the university. And as a model, television personality and entrepre-

This won’t be the new mom’s first foray into a classroom — back in 2012, the former “America’s Next Top Model” creator completed a nineweek management program at Harvard Business School. It looks like someone isn’t too happy about Jordan Rodgers’ newfound love with ‘Bachelorette’ star JoJo Fletcher. Just weeks after the couple’s engagement aired on ABC, Rodgers’ ex-girlfriend, Brittany Farrar, has spoken out against the pair and accused Rodgers of cheating. This past week, she has taken to Instagram to rant about her former rela-

tionship with Rodgers. In one post, Farrar published a lengthy explanation about her decision to out Rodgers as a “prolific liar and cheater,” saying she isn’t looking for fame or money. “All I want is the same thing that anyone else who’s been wronged would want: the chance to share the truth,” she wrote. She also posted a video to her account showing receipts for flowers that Rodgers allegedly bought for another woman while the two were dating, according to Us magazine.
The video has since been deleted. But Rodgers’ past isn’t bringing the couple down — on Saturday, Fletcher and Rodgers pretty much fought fire with fire, posting their own photos on Instagram to prove that they’re still going strong amid the cheating rumors. On Saturday, Fletcher posted a photo of Rodgers holding her hand while wearing her engagement ring. The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.... & tacos,” the caption reads.

Lindsay Lohan wants to meet Vladimir Putin If you want Lindsay Lohan to appear on your talk show, you’d better be willing to cough up some serious cash — and have connections to powerful political figures. Lohan was recently asked to appear on “Pust govoryat,” a popular talk show in Russia. The host is looking to interview Lohan about her rocky relationship and breakup with Russian businessman Egor Tarabasov.

In exchange for appearing on the show, Lohan sent over a list of demands to the television station’s executives — and it’s no joke. So far, the former child star has asked for a private jet, security, a Russian visa, 500,000 British pounds (roughly the equivalent of $650,000), a penthouse suite at the Ritz-Carlton and a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to TMZ.

Diane Kruger won’t fall back on looks The actress talks “Disorder” and the difference between female and male directors. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Diane Kruger’s Hollywood breakthrough was playing Helen of Troy in “Troy.” Since then, the German-born actress has proven she’s capable of playing more than just a face. She’s shown her mettle in “Inglourious Basterds” and “Farewell, My Queen” and on FX’s “The Bridge.” In “Disorder,” a French-Belgian thriller, she’s back to playing a woman defined by her looks — a trophy wife to a wealthy businessman who might be caught up in some dodgy arms dealing. But this time it’s different: Jessie, her character, proves smart and even resourceful when she and her son become targets for aggression, especially when it becomes clear the troubled former solider (Matthias Schoenaerts) hired to protect them might be too damaged to do his job. Because “Disorder” is directed by a woman, Alice Winocour, it makes you read a lot into Jessie — to not judge her as just a rich man’s wife. If this movie had been directed by a man, I don’t know how I comfortable I would have been playing this kept trophy wife. She could easily be just a pretty face. I think the character has so many di-

mensions. I enjoy the arc of the character. When [Jessie’s] only looked [at] from afar, there’s something the way [Winocour] films it that brings out an emotion. You’ve said female directors are really tough to work with. Where does Winocour rank there? Oh, she’s a tough director. She needs to see what she doesn’t like before she can find what she does like. There’s a lot of takes. She’s very precise. Some may want to call it anal. She can do 25 shots of a door opening. Do you find male directors are a bit less intense
with actresses? Not that male directors are not demanding, but I find women, especially when it comes to their female characters, to be much more demanding than men. They always look for something more realistic. They’re usually not afraid to show, say, a woman being hysterical. A lot of men don’t want to see women cry or shout. They’re very involved in your physical appearance. It’s my experience that women don’t want you to wear makeup or get your hair done in a certain way. They’re just more direct and demanding. Schoenaerts, plays a former solider with PTSD. Schoenaerts went very Method for this: For instance, he’d barely sleep, and at one point had to be hospitalized. What was your experience working with a co-star who was really going there? He was a very generous partner. We didn’t hang out at night, so I guess he was up when I was asleep. [Laughs] He would sleep during lunch breaks or would go and lay down. He’s one of the reasons I wanted to be in the film, because I loved him in “Bullhead.” That was the first movie in Europe where people were like,
“Who is this guy?” And physically he’s very atypical for a Belgian. He’s really tall and has an animalistic side to him — very physical. But he’s not afraid to show emotion. He’s not the tough guy with a gun. He didn’t disappoint. He’s the new kind of man: strong but not an alpha male bro. I think that old type might finally be a dying breed. Hope so. [Laughs]

Nick and Megan sitting in a tree The comedy power couple presents “Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally — Summer of 69: No Apostrophe.” A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman are, of course, famous television stars to you, what with beloved comic roles in “Will & Grace” and “Childrens Hospital” (her) and “Parks and Recreation” and “Fargo” (him). Beyond that, the pair are a wryly humorous, amorous, loveydovey married couple (coming up on 13 years of wedlock in September) and co-workers on several projects such as their staged, comic-andmusical look-see into sex and fidelity, “Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally — Summer of 69: No Apostrophe.” We caught up with the happily marrieds en route to rehearsal. You live together. You work together. That’s charming. But at a certain point, when does it get to be too much? Megan Mullally: It only seems like we work together all the time, but it’s not that really. That’s why when we do do something as one, it’s fun. I think even if we did work together all the time, that would be OK. We get along really well. Not long ago we went on vacation for a whole month and that was cool. Nick Offerman: If there

is a limit as to how much we can stand being around each other, we haven’t found it. Our work apart from each other means that we’re on-again, off-again. When we’re together, we usually know that it’s finite — say, touring this for two months, then going out and doing something apart from each other. It’s a constant dance. I know that you two began your romance between 2000 and 2001.
If you go Tuesday, Aug. 23 Beacon Theatre 2124 Broadway, New York beacon.theatre-ny.com/ tickets
Who made the initial move on the other? Mullally: He did. He asked me — are you kidding? Was there a theatrical model for this? Some of
it feels like Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.” It seems as if Stanley Donen’s “Two for the Road” is an influence. Offerman: I can’t believe that you just said Noel Coward and Stanley Donen. Both are very generous things to say about our show. When and how did you decide that your sex and married lives were unique enough to brand as entertainment? Offerman: We have a
good time together, and we thought we could translate that onto a stage. We’re just two people whose relationship requires all the nurture that any close relationship requires. But, the media has mythologized our time as one, so that when we were looking for an excuse to work together, we built a show around that and it was a natural fit. Plus, we both love dirty humor and we love to sing songs, so we wrote dirty, funny songs.
Mullally: Those extensive articles — and they were funny — chronicling the minute details of our lives together cracked us up. The press really seemed in it to win it where our relationship was concerned, so we decided to exploit that, with the premise being that, yes, ours is the greatest love story ever told. Offerman: And, that yes, with a little practice, you can have this fairy-tale life, just like ours.

HEALTH
How safe is NYC water? New York City’s been in the grips of some unforgiving heat and humidity this summer. One of the top tips for staying healthy during such severe weather (and always) is to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. And the city extended hours at many of its public pools to give folks as much time as possible to cool o. But how safe is all that water you’re drinking from the tap? And with all those people crowding those huge pools, are you just jumping into a giant petri dish? We talked to Dr. Philip Landrigan, an expert in environmental medicine and public health at Mount Sinai Health System, about the safety of our water. So, how is New York City’s drinking water? Some of the best in the world. One of the great breakthroughs in the history of New York City, that just changed the quality of life forever, was the construction of the Croton Aqueduct, which brought in clean water from upstate. Prior to that time, New York was regularly, like every ďŹ ve years, was aicted by massive epidemics of cholera and other infectious diseases that are transmitted by water. Since that time, those epidemics have ceased to exist. That is great to know. So it’s tested regularly?
morning they may release a little bit of rust, and so on.
ASK MOUNT SINAI Stay Healthy You have medical questions? We have answers. Metro is teaming up with the experts at the esteemed Mount Sinai Health System to provide answers to your most pressing medical concerns. Send us an email at askmtsinai@ metro.us. We’ll select one question and publish an answer every other week. Yeah. Now with all of that said ‌ where things can get a little dicey is in the last few feet as the water comes into a person’s home or apartment building, because sometimes in these private dwellings there are old lead pipes ‌ ďŹ rst thing in the
Is it a cause for concern to see a bit of rust come out of the tap? No, it really isn’t. Just run the water until it runs nice and clear. The water has been sitting overnight in contact with the pipes, so the water has been sitting in one place overnight. Let’s talk about NYC’s public pools. How safe is the water in our pools generally? It depends ďŹ rst of all on the source of the water. My understanding is that most of the pools use New York City water, so the source is therefore extremely good. The second factor is how well the pool is maintained. That means that the ďŹ lters have to be changed regularly. It means that the various chemicals have to be added. The sta just have to be meticulous. That’s pool by pool.
Go ahead and drink out of the tap stress-free.
ISTOCK
Is there anything that people who are using public pools can do to contribute to the cleanliness and safety of the water? Everybody who uses a public pool should respect the fact that they’re sharing the water with their neighbors, they should take a shower and use the bathroom before they go to the pool ‌ And certainly not use the pool as a place to relieve themselves. That’s all sort of basic and crude, but it’s worth saying. SHEILA DOUGHERTY

How to ace the end of your internship Make your boss look good, ask questions and never leave without a thank you note. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa
alizah.salario@metro.us
So you’ve almost completed that coveted summer internship — kudos and congrats! Now comes the hard part. That swanky line on your résumé means zilch if you don’t take full advantage of the opportunity. Otherwise, you’re wasting your time. Sounds harsh? Welcome to the real world. As summer internships wind down, make sure you end on high note by following these must-dos (and don’ts):
Cultivate your references “Making good contacts is one of the key takeaways from an internship, and too few interns maintain those ties,” says Allison Cheston, a career advisor based in New York. Handsdown, you must leave an internship with references from your bosses — but that’s just the beginning. “Make sure you connect on LinkedIn with every-
one you meet during the internship. Also, ask your supervisor and colleagues to recommend you on LinkedIn, and reciprocate,” she continues.
Don’t leave without a proper goodbye First, make sure you review what projects you’re working on a week before leaving, and don’t leave any work unfinished. “This way, if there is a project or assignment too big to tackle upon the conclusion of your internship, you will be able express your needs and discuss a way to prioritize your tasks,” says Heather Huhman, a Gen Y career expert and the founder of the PR firm Come Recommended. Also, don’t skip the thank you note. Even if you didn’t have best experience, “it’s important to thank your boss for the opportunity, as well as mention one or two of the valuable skills you learned.”
Leave with an accomplishment story After an internship, you should be able to outline a problem you were presented with, and how you resolved it. Then it’s your job to turn that accom-
plishment into a story. “For example, let’s say you were tasked with increasing the company’s Twitter followers. Your accomplishment story would walk future employers through exactly how you accomplished this, and the percentage increase in Twitter followers as a result of your actions,” explains Huhman.
Don’t worry about brownnosing This fear is generally unfounded. Why not be a standout superstar? “In terms of an employer [perspective], I love when my interns take initiative and are really truly interested in my company’s success,” says Huhman.
Be honest about your experience If you have an exit interview at the conclusion of your internship, don’t lie or try to sugarcoat your feelings. Says Huhman, “It’s extremely important to be open and honest with your boss. Internships are a learning experience for both the intern and the employer, so any feedback you can provide about the program will help the employer.”

Should you take a job just for the money? Set goals
Because exposure can’t pay your bills.
If you do take a job for the money, just be very clear on what you want to achieve, and what the trade-off is, says Ditta: “You really need to assess the costbenefit.” Setting goals — like working a highpaying job until student loans or a mortgage debt are paid off — can help make the situation more palatable.
ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa
alizah.salario@metro.us
In an ideal world, we’d all have our dream jobs — and be getting paid handsomely. But because we live in an imperfect world, most of us walk a delicate balance between doing a job we enjoy and doing a job that pays the bills. If we’re lucky — even some of the time — we have both. But when financial obligations or external pressures foist us into difficult situations, we tend to start thinking about finding jobs that pay well, period, says Anne-Marie Ditta, an executive career coach and public speaker. So when — if ever — should you take a job for the money? Whether you already have a lucrative offer or are considering making the jump, heed

Ditta’s advice:
Clarify your values Ditta strongly advises against taking a job for
money if you’re certain it will bring daily misery. However, if the gig falls somewhere in the gray area between dream job and toiling in a gulag,
the consider the metrics Ditta uses to gauge if higher pay is worth the personal costs: “Are the culture and environment in alignment with your values? Will the position challenge you? Will it make good use of your skills and your interests?” asks Ditta. If you can answer “yes” to one or more of these questions, then the job is worth the extra money in the bank.
Be clear on your purpose “My experience is that
when people go just for the money, I see them back in my office six months to a year later. It’s not going to work out,” says Ditta. Taking what Ditta calls an “inthe-meantime job” is a legitimate choice, but you must know why you got into it. That means setting one, two and five year goals for yourself — and actively figuring out your exit strategy for that temporary gig. “You have to make time in your schedule to do that process of career exploration,” says Ditta.
For those frustrated with their meager earnings, forgoing a career passion for a well-paying gig can be tempting. But how do you know you’re ready to make the switch? “If you think about it infrequently, then maybe it’s not a big issue. But if you’re losing sleep and you’re getting stressed out about it, that’s when it’s gone over the line,” says Ditta. You may very well decide to stay put, but people who consistently think about alternate career options “owe it to themselves” to explore a transition. In fact, actively seeking direction is practically a career necessity. Says Ditta, “If you don’t know where you’re going you might end up in Alaska with a bikini.”

Bryce Petty is doing everything he can to make things hard on the Jets’ front office when they decide which quarterbacks to keep on the roster. GETTY IMAGES
Youngers on veteran Jets adding sparks Jets youngsters Robby Anderson, Bryce Petty and Zach Sudfeld are making cases for roster spots TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Jets are a veteran, win-now outfit, but judging by the recent play of some of its youngsters, they’re showing they can also offer help. Quarterback Bryce Petty is making things rather difficult for a Jets’ coaching staff that may not be too keen on keeping four signal callers on its final 53-man roster. But due to his recent performances, the second-year veteran is thumbing his nose at the dissenters — and that’s actually a good problem for the Jets.
Petty went 15-of-24 with 230 yards and two touchdowns — and more importantly, no turnovers — in the Jets’ 22-18 defeat at Washington. And with Geno Smith looking anything but solid, Petty could actually go from being on the fringe of being cut to actually make the No. 2 quarterback spot open to competition. Smith ended his second drive with a telegraphed pass to rookie wideout Charone Peake that was intercepted by Will Blackmon in the final moments of halftime. The throw — and read — weren’t pretty, which was the opposite of Petty’s night. The former Baylor star was by far the bestlooking quarterback wearing green. And he showed his inner Brett Favre on one particular touchdown when he hung tough in the
pocket and delivered a laser, between two defenders, to hulking tight end Zach Sudfeld for the 19-yard score, just as the quarterback got drilled from the blindside. Sudfeld, who for the first time was playing in the same professional game as his brother, Washington rookie quarterback Nate, showed his wares with the athletic reception. The 6-foot-6 Sudfeld, an undrafted player out of Nevada who was bypassed by every team in the 2013 draft, is trying to catch on with Gang Green after being cut a couple times and suffering an ACL injury during his brief NFL career. Sudfeld is trying to latch on, and with that catch on film, it could only help his cause. It was the tight end’s first touchdown in any type of game since his rookie season with the New

Bowles said that Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold didn’t play because he wanted to evaluate the younger centers. Wesley Johnson started, and was then subbed out by Dakota Dozier. Not all the kids have been allowed to showcase their talent, though, as rookie quarterback Christian Hackenberg did not play — coach’s decision. The Penn State product has yet to play in the preseason, and will almost certainly not play until the preseason finale at Philadelphia in two weeks. The Jets released running back Bernard Pierce, who was placed on injured reserve, last week. Wideout Quincy Enunwa is in the concussion protocol after colliding with a punt returner in the first half.
England Patriots. Another undrafted player is trying to catch the attention of head coach Todd Bowles, and that’s rookie wideout Robby Anderson. Fighting for a roster spot with fellow rookie wideouts Jalin Marshall (undrafted) and Peake (seventh round), Anderson had six receptions for 131
yards, including a 42yard touchdown late in the game, on a beautiful stop-and-go fly route. He also had a terrific 50yard reception to start the fourth quarter when he caught a go-route from Petty. The young passer has certainly noticed the smooth effort of his rookie, noting that
Anderson “has a sneaky way of making the hard catches look easy.” Anderson is a long shot to make the roster, but with added performances like this, he’ll also cause a good problem for Bowles and co. The Temple product was the first Jet to garner over 100 yards receiving in a preseason game since Ryan Spadola in 2013 against the New York Giants. And his 131 yards were the most in any type of game for the Jets since David Clowney racked up 163 yards against the Cleveland Browns in 2008. Bowles can only hope these unsung players continue to make his choices difficult as the regular season and cut-down days near, because it not only makes daily practices that much more competitive, but also displays just how deep these Jets are.

Finally, some young blood to excite optimistic Yankees’ fans. GETTY IMAGES
‘BABY BOMBERS’ SANCHEZ, JUDGE MAKE YANKEES WATCHABLE Just call them the “Baby Bombers.” The excitement is real. The potential is real. Are they still prospects? Absolutely. Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge have made quite the impact on the Yankees thus far in their brief careers as major leaguers. There has not been this much excitement around the Yankees in quite some time and that is what makes the Yankees so much more readily watchable. Certainly, they are selling us all on hope and potential. They also represent the potential of future October baseball and the potential for future World Series appearances. As I have written about before in this very column, there is a difference between being a playoff contender and a championship contender. With the decision to trade off veterans like Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova around the MLB trade deadline, the Yankees added upper-echelon prospects as GM Brian Cashman tries to build the Yankees’ next “uber team.” It is great and exciting to see what the potential of these players is and what that could mean for Bronx baseball. With that being said, we need to temper the expectations as well and not put the cart before the horse. As a Yankees fan, just go back to 1990 and the splash that Kevin Maas made in 79 games and 300 at bats when he hit 21 home runs. He hit 44 homers the

rest of his career and he was out of baseball at 31. I was 14 years old in the “Summer of Maas” and I remember the excitement that he generated and I am sure that I could still find his rookie card that I bought in the attic of my dad’s house. I thought, as did many, that he was going to be a long-term answer for the Yankees and he proved not to be. He is not the first, nor will he be the last example of a player whose potential was never realized. I bring up the Maas example as a cautionary tale. You have to be careful of placing stardom on players this early in their
respective careers. Yes, it is great to hear that Yankees catcher Brian McCann has called Sanchez a “stud.” McCann added that he “consider[s] him one of the better, if not best, young catchers since I’ve been in the big leagues.” That is certainly a glowing review and Sanchez has lived up the expectations defensively and offensively. He is hitting .379 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in 15 games and is now the Yankees everyday starting catcher. The early returns have been off the charts and he has been a blast to watch. For Aaron Judge, the 6-foor-7 right-handed power bat is hitting .308 with two HR and six RBI in his first seven games. Judge is an imposing presence at the plate and his approach as a young hitter is very impressive and his power is off the charts. There is no question the Yankees mishandled Alex Rodriguez on the way out. There is no doubt that you should be happy the baseball people and not the business people are making the baseball decisions for the Yankees. Sanchez and Judge represent what the potential can be for this organization in the not so distant future, but it is still potential and they need to do it consistently moving forward. It is exciting to see each and every at bat. The potential in these two players is special. The question remains about the potential being realized. It is too early to say the answer is definitively yes.

Team USA thumps way to gold medal The Americans eliminated all doubt with a drubbing of Serbia on Sunday. A ruthless United States pounded Serbia, 96-66, to claim a third straight Olympic men’s basketball title on Sunday, giving coach Mike Krzyzewski a golden send-off. After scrapping to a tense three-point win over Serbia in the group round, the United States quickly removed any suspense from the rematch, surging to a 52-29 halftime lead then cruising to their 25th straight win on Olympic hardwood. Kevin Durant led the assault, pouring in 30 points including 24 in a brilliant opening half, while DeMarcus Cousins was again a beast on the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds. The rout capped a bril-
liant tenure as Team USA head coach for Krzyzewski, who signs off after guiding the U.S. to three consecutive Olympic gold medals and an astounding 88-1 record in international competition. The only blemish on “Coach K’s” otherwise perfect résumé is a semifinal loss to Greece at the 2006 world championships. The game was also likely the last for captain Carmelo Anthony, who embraced Krzyzewski on the sidelines when he was substituted in the final minutes. If it was indeed Anthony’s international swan song, U.S. basketball’s only four-time Olympian exits with three gold medals and a pack of U.S. team records. eighth and ninth players to win Olympic and FIBA world championship gold and an NBA title. The final was a classic David and Goliath matchup, with basketball super power the United States, now winners of 15 of the 18 Olympics in which they have participated, going up against tiny Serbia, who were appearing in the Olympic tournament for the first time as an independent nation. Serbia, however, also brought a considerable basketball pedigree to the gold medal game, having been part of the former Yugoslavia, once a European basketball power. More significantly, Serbia had given the United States their biggest scare in Rio, battling the Americans right down to the final buzzer in a Group A clash that offered up at least the

possibility of an intriguing final. But the United States would not be caught off
guard again, their class evident from the start. “We played them already, so we were
familiar with the faces and familiar with their game,” U.S. guard Paul George said. “It was about taking the fight to them, and I thought we did a great job of doing that tonight.” The Americans had difficulty breaking down a determined Serb defense in the opening quarter but still ground out a 19-15 lead. Then the U.S. shifted into top gear, blowing past the overwhelmed Serbs to open up a 23-point halftime advantage. “They played better than us,” said Serbian center Vladimir Simac. “We fought and gave it everything, playing for our people. I think we made them [proud].” “This is a golden silver medal.” Earlier, Spain edged Australia, 89-88, to take home the bronze. STEVE KEATING
