DEATHS FROM LIGHTNING STRIKES THIS YEAR AT HIGHEST SINCE 2010
1
A pair of fatalities from lightning strikes over the weekend lifted the U.S. death toll from such accidents this year to 29, the most since 2010, the National Weather Service said on Monday. The latest lightning-related deaths occurred in Colorado and Michigan on Friday, the NWS said in a report. With four months left in the year, the 2016 toll has already surpassed last year’s 27. Eight people have died from lightning this month, making it the deadliest August since 2007. In July, typically the month with the most fatalities, 12 people were killed by lightning. “People are outside, enjoying beaches in the summer time,” said John Jensenius, an NWS lightning safety specialist based in Gray, Maine. US NEW HOME SALES RACE TO NEAR NINE-YEAR HIGH
2
New U.S. single-family home sales unexpectedly surged in July, reaching their highest level in nearly nine years amid robust demand, brightening the housing market outlook and bolstering views that economic growth will pick up in the third quarter. Housing market strength should offset some of the drag from manufacturing, with other data on Tuesday showing production at factories remaining constrained by weak orders. “A very rosy picture is beginning to emerge on the housing market, pointing to sustained buoyancy in the sector’s recovery, which remains one of the few bright spots for the U.S. economy,” said Millan Mulraine, deputy chief economist at TD Securities in New York. The Commerce Department said new home sales jumped 12.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 654,000 units last month, the highest level since October 2007. REUTERS
FLORIDA ANNOUNCES ZIKA CASE HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM MIAMI

Florida officials on Tuesday announced the first case of Zika acquired by local mosquitoes in Pinellas County, located some 265 miles from Miami, where the first locally transmitted U.S. cases were reported. Florida Gov. Rick Scott also said there were four new cases of Zika transmission in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, where officials have been aggressively spraying for the mosquitoes that carry the virus for weeks. The state department of health has begun door-to-door outreach in Pinellas County, testing individuals to find other cases, Scott said in a statement. He added that mosquito abatement and reduction activities are also taking place. REUTERS
Nonprofit opens door to college for troubled students College Bound Dorchester never gives up on helping their young adults get an education. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
At 28, Naomie Charles has been homeless, in and out of shelters, in jail and in more than one abusive relationship. The Dorchester native has struggled, but on Tuesday she was honored for a recent success: Charles is starting college in the fall. Charles and about 50 other students donned caps and gowns for College Bound Dorchester’s matriculation ceremony at the Boston Public Schools Roxbury office Tuesday night. College Bound Dorchester is a nonprofit that supports those who have dropped out of school and may have spent time in jail or in gangs by helping them get into and through schools like Roxbury Community College or Bunker Hill. The annual matriculation honors everyone from the program who is now enrolled in college, whether they’re starting their first semester in September, like Charles, or they’ve been taking college classes since January, like 24-year-old Giovanne Morris. “For the majority of these young people, college was never something anybody in their family thought of, or thought they would ever do, so we want to recognize the huge step they’re making,” said Mark Culliton, CEO of College Bound Dorchester. Charles was in a homeless shelter, pregnant with her second child, when her housing worker suggested she try to go back to school.
The graduates stand in line. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
She had tried many times before. In high school, she had her Grade 12 credits, but her math MCAS test scores kept her from graduating. She had started a GED program while staying at a different shelter but stopped to focus on getting housing. With the help of College Bound, she starts at Roxbury Community College in the fall. She couldn’t have done it without her adviser, child care and housing worker from College Bound, she said. “You have a college adviser who stays with you until you finish college with a degree,” she said. “That’s something I never had, period, in my life. I never had 100 percent support, and College Bound gave me that.” Morris first heard of College Bound when he was taking classes at South Bay House of Correction. First arrested at age 11 for stealing a bike from a Toys R Us, Morris has been in and out of institutions since. Now, he’s in his second semester at Bunker Hill Community College, where he’s studying to be a
guidance counselor. “I feel like I could connect with youths and show them the importance of sticking with your goals, of sticking with education,” Morris said. “Education can open doors for a lot of things.” If it weren’t for College Bound, Morris said he would probably be back in jail. “Every time I tried to quit [school], they were right there telling me to keep going. I didn’t have anyone do that before,” he said. “I never paid much attention to what was ahead of me. I was always living for the moment. Now I’m looking ahead of me and there’s something promising. That’s different.” For Culliton, the matriculation is about more than just sending the students off to college. It’s proof that his organization is succeeding for both these individuals and the whole community. Although expensive — College Bound works closely with the city but relies mostly on privately raised funds to provide students with personal advisers, free
college prep courses, child care and more— Culliton knows that it’s worth it. “If you move a young person who’s sort of disengaged and hanging out on the corner and get them into college, there’s a net economic benefit to the commonwealth of half a million dollars for each student,” Culliton said. “These are people who were costing money, using resources and not paying taxes. Get them off the corner and they’re making money, paying taxes and using less services.” And they’re encouraging others to join the program as well. Charles said she already influenced friends who got involved with shoplifting to try it out. For Morris, he’s become something of an example in his community. “Guys around my neighborhood, they see what I’m doing now and they don’t talk down [about it],” he said. “They see it’s actually real and they respect it. I’m just getting a lot of different attention, positive attention, and a lot of motivation and support — more than I ever used to have.”

in intimidation, indecency and misogyny. Former “The Five cohost Andrea Tantaros also identifies others, including host Bill O’Reilly, network correspondent John Roberts, guest Ben Collins and actor Dean Cain, as men who sexually harassed her, though none of these men are specifically named as defendants in the suit, according to Buzzfeed. Tantaros does name executives at the network in the suit, including its new co-president Bill Shine and public relations chief Irena Briganti, who she said contributed to and reinforced the hostile environment, according to Politico. “[T]his Complaint is not just about Ailes; it also gives life to the saying that ‘the fish stinks from the head,’ the complaint reads. “For Ailes did not act alone. He may have been the primary culprit, but his actions were condoned by his most senior lieutenants, who engaged in a concerted effort to silence Tantaros by threats, humiliation, and retaliation. As for the former senator, Tantaros said “Brown made a number of sexually inappropriate comments to Tantaros on set, including, and in a suggestive manner, that Tantaros ‘would be fun to go to a nightclub with.’ “After the show was over, Brown snuck up behind Tantaros while she was purchasing lunch and put his hands on her lower waist, it continues. “She immediately pulled back, telling Brown to ‘stop.’ Tantaros then immediately met with [then Fox News executive vice president Bill] Shine to complain, asking him to ensure that Brown would never be booked on the show again. Shine said that he would talk to Scott. Thereafter, Shine and Scott ignored Tantaros’s complaint, and continued to book Brown on ‘Outnumbered.’ Brown told Politico in a written statement that those allegations were “completely and totally false.

“Firstly, I don’t go to clubs, he wrote. “Secondly, I had little, if any contact with Ms. Tantaros and always treated her and every other employee at Fox with professionalism. I was unaware of the matter. Thank you for bringing it up to me. Fox News does not comment on pending lawsuits against the organization, a representative told the website. Tantaros was engaged in a dispute with the network over her contract last winter, when the network accused her of writing a book without receiving written approval. According to the New York Times, Fox’s chief lawyer argued in that case that Tantaros had invented sexual harassment claims to gain leverage. Her lawyer, Judd Burstein, reportedly said that dispute was being used by the network as a way to keep Tantaros from speaking publicly about her allegations. The lawsuit comes after Roger Ailes stepped down following allegations from former Fox anchor Gretchen Carlson that he repeatedly sexually harassed her. He has denied the allegations.

Study: Divorce spikes in certain months; some lawyers not so sure Does your partner seem a little more annoying than usual this month? A new study suggests there might be a reason. Researchers at the University of Washington found that divorce filings consistently spiked twice a year in that state: both in March and August. The increases appeared regularly over a 14-year period, and that pattern stayed consistent even after researchers accounted for other factors, such as unemployment or the housing market. All that is prompting researchers to ask: why? Associate sociology professor Julie Brines told the school’s blog that the findings suggest that divorce filings may be driven by a “domestic ritual calendar that governs family behavior. Holidays in those seasons are traditionally sacred times for families, and an atmosphere in which proposing divorce can seem inappropriate, or even culturally taboo. Couples may also want to see if the holiday experience together might strengthen or weaken ties in the marriage, Brines said. “People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past, Brines said. “They represent periods in the year when there’s the anticipation or the opportunity for a new beginning, a new start, something different, a transition into a new period of life. It’s like an optimism cycle, in a sense. They’re very symbolically charged moments in time for the culture. Scientists also explored four other states — Ohio, Minnesota, Florida and Arizona — with similar divorce laws but much different demographics, and found the pattern persisted. “What I can tell you is that the seasonal pattern of divorce filings is more or less the same, Brines said. Metro reached out to several divorce lawyers

in the cities where we publish, and found that, at least anecdotally, there was some room for disagreement with the study’s findings. “It doesn’t really jibe with what we have here in Massachusetts, Boston family law attorney Edward Dombroski Jr. said, adding that February was, “by far, the busiest month for filings in his office. “I think that’s normally a reflection of two things: families trying to get through the holidays — and perhaps unsuccessfully so — and folks making New Year’s resolutions and taking steps they’ve contemplated for a while. “We actually don’t find August to be a particularly busy month, he added. New York-based family law attorney Leon Mindin went as far as to call the study “baloney. “I would say that it comes in waves, he explained. “It’s a bit subjective. Mindin said he thinks people just aren’t available to get divorced when they are off on vacation or traveling for major holidays, noting he’s seen an increase in filings this month, but not necessarily every year. “I’ve seen an uptick in the past two weeks in custody cases, he said. “Friday alone, I had five calls with the same issue: Parents don’t want to return kids to the custodial parent. School is starting and a panic sets in.

One pattern Mindin does notice? “People want to get divorced at the beginning of the month, once all the bills are paid, he said.

CNN: Russia suspected in hack of New York Times, other US media The FBI and other U.S. security agencies are investigating cyber breaches targeting reporters at the New York Times and other U.S. news organizations that are thought to have been carried out by hackers working for Russian intelligence, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed U.S. officials. “Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said,” CNN said. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The FBI declined to comment, and representatives for the Secret Service, which has a role in protecting the country from cyber crime, did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The intrusions were detected in recent months, according to CNN. Citing the U.S. officials, it said the Times had hired private security investigators

to work with national security officials in assessing the breach. Representatives for the Times could not be immediately reached for comment. News of the cyber attack comes amid a wave of similar attacks targeting major U.S. political parties that have surfaced in recent weeks ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election. The Democratic National Committee, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the party’s congressional fundraising committee have all been affected. Hackers have also targeted the computer
systems of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Republican Party organizations, sources have told Reuters. If confirmed, the breach at the Times would not be the first time foreign hackers infiltrated a news organization: Media are frequently targeted in an order to glean insights into U.S. policies or to spy on journalists. In 2013, a group of hackers known as the Syrian Electronic Army also attacked Times and other media outlets. Chinese attackers also infiltrated the Times that year. REUTERS

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller made out It seems that Ariana Grande is really into all things Mac these days, and we’re not just talking about her Viva Glam lipstick collection for M.A.C. cosmetics. According to TMZ, Grande went out on a steamy date with rapper Mac Miller to Katsu-Ya in Encino, California, on Sunday evening, where the couple were photographed showing major PDA –– snuggling, canoodling and even kissing! In previous interviews, Mac referred to the “Into You” singer as just a “homey.” Homey or not, it seems like the two were really enjoying each others’ company on their private outing. Let’s not forget the musicians have some history. Before linking up with Big Sean, Grande

Getting Mariah Carey in the mood can be dangerous
the word
Setting the right tone is everything when you’re trying to Netflix & chill (look it up, it doesn’t mean marathoning “Game of Thrones”). And Mariah Carey’s boyfriend badly misjudged this one. James Packer, 48, has been dating Carey for about a year, so you’d think he’d know what she likes to listen to. But, according to The Fix, one recent night he put on Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” to get her in the mood —
and the “Fantasy” singer shut it down by throwing the computer playing the song out a window. “Seriously, just trashed it,” the source tells The Fix. “She ran out of the room screaming. So the night was obviously finished for James, and they retreated to separate parts of the house.” Apparently, the 47-year-old Carey’s musical grievances don’t stop at Beyonce — the source says in another incident, JLo’s “Waiting for Tonight” led to Carey coughing up a bite of her dinner. “[Packer] has learned never, ever to play another female artist in the house. It’s either Mariah, jazz or classical!”
Jennifer Lawrence made a ton of money, but not as much as last year Jennifer Lawrence is making bank, say Forbes’ annual estimated ranking of the celebrity salaries. The “X-Men” actress raked in $46 million pretax this year, $6 million shy of her No. 1 spot last year, but who’s counting? The so-called paycheck is based on a hodgepodge of data from Nielson, IMDB and other industry sources, and includes Lawrence’s box office fee from the final “Hunger Games” installment and an up-front for her upcoming Chris Pratt sci-fi drama, “Passengers.” (She got a reported $20
million, while Pratt got $10 million. Sad!) “Ghostbusters” star Melissa McCarthy gained traction from her No. 3 spot last year, coming in second with $33 million. Scarlett Johansson ($25 million) and Jennifer Aniston ($21 million) trailed in the third and fourth spots, respectively. And the only actresses of color (Bollywood’s Deepika Padukone, $10 million, and China’s Fan Bingbing, $17 million) are notably absent from Hollywood cinema, which makes us feel a little bit dead inside.

On Sunday night, Drake was in Meek Mill territory — performing a show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. According to TMZ, Meek was planning for Drake’s arrival and had members of his crew call all of the clubs in town to turn down the “Hotline Bling” rapper if he wanted to throw an after party. In addition, TMZ
reports that Meek’s entourage also put out a warning to Drake’s people, saying that “there better not be any disrespect when they got to Philly.” This reignited the long-running beef between Meek Mill and Drake, which started back when Meek accused him of not writing his own raps. Drake reportedly called Meek Mills a
p—y at his D.C. show Saturday and lambasted him even more on his home turf Sunday night, performing his diss anthem to Meek — “Back to Back.” After the Philly show, Drake didn’t stay to party although it’s not clear if it was due to Meek’s “club block” or not. Will these two ever quit going at each other?

Fall means new TV, so get the popcorn ready
Fox’s new live action-animation series “Son of Zorn premieres Sept. 25.
Everyone is heading back to school this week, and despite the fact that I’ve been out of school for years, the lead-up to fall brings certain things out in me, like the overwhelming desire to buy a Kylo Ren notebook and a pack of new pens. Here’s a small sampling of my must-see TV: I’ve been completely riveted by Netix’s Marvel series. “Daredevilâ€? totally blew me away with its grittiness, its heart and its stars. “Jessica Jonesâ€? was glorious; it proved — and oh my god, why do we still have to prove — that a female comic book lead can be a mainstream success. That said, this is one of my favorites, and knowing that we’re going to see Laverne Cox as Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Tim Curry (the original Frank) as the Criminologist has me ready to jump in Oct. 20. In the silliness department, I’m dying to watch “Son of Zorn, which has an animated beefcake warrior living in realworld Southern California. The endless promos on the Fox app for once got me more excited than annoyed (Sept. 25). Then there is “The Good Place (Sept. 19). I’m not always a huge fan of networks, but after the past few months, I’m looking for something to make me laugh, and NBC’s trailer is kind of cute. Riding the wave For their sophomore album, the Wind and the Wave got a little help from a friend. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
Austin duo the Wind and the Wave charmed critics and fans alike with their 2014 debut “From the Wreckage.” Vocalist Patty Lynn Drew and producer-guitarist Dwight A. Baker are best friends who just enjoy making really, really good music, and it’s utterly refreshing. For their second album, Baker handed over the production reigns to Butch Walker, a new experience for both he and Drew, who had never recorded with someone else before. The result being “Happiness is Not a Place,” their sophomore LP under a new label (they hopped from RCA to Island last year) and a poppy first single, “Grand Canyon,” a rapturous toe-tapping departure from their indie folk roots. Baker calls in from a break from the studio to discuss the new single, working with Walker and his personal “Grand Canyon.” Tell me about the single, “Grand Canyon.” What’s the moral of the story? That one in particular is about [Patty] on a personal level, and her brother being in a horrible car accident, and a coma on the eve of our first record coming out. I feel on a deeper way, it’s about not taking for granted the moments that you’re given. Go see the amazing things, go do the amazing things. Is that a self-serving mantra, too? That’s mainly where the song comes from. Patty is a 28-year-old hermit who has a soul of a 60-year-old, and I’ve had the soul of a 60-year-old since I was 6. We just want to eat macaroni and cheese and chill, but you’ve got to force yourself to go out. See the sights.
The Wind and the Wave join producer Butch Walker on tour this fall.
If you go With Butch Walker Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. The Sinclair 52 Church St., Cambridge $25, ticketmaster.com
What’s on your bucket list? What’s your personal “Grand Canyon”? Well I’m fascinated by history, and I’d love to see some of the things that are impossible now. Things in Iraq and Egypt, where I don’t think things would go very well for me and my giant Nordic ass. I love cities like London and Madrid and Paris and Vancouver, where it’s more about finding the footsteps of how a country was founded. I’d like to walk those steps myself. What was it like working with Butch Walker? Butch is rad. He’s similar to me. We chose him because I went in after making two records back-to-back, and I was burned out. It was time to make a new album for a new label, and I had zero desire to go into the studio, which is a bad place to start a record. I tried and failed miserably. It’s easy to make a record when you
GETTY IMAGES
think no one’s going to hear it, and that was the first album. We weren’t even planning on being a band. But when you’re writing and you have fans who all of sudden expect you to deliver something, you don’t know what the lines are — can I go off and deliver something else? Or do I need to deliver what they expect? Butch turned out to be a good choice because he had just done [his own] album with Ryan Adams, and it was the first he [didn’t produce himself] in 20 years. Butch was someone who knew what it was like being “the guy,” but then have to deal with someone new. He knew when to be brutal and when to be understanding. What was different about the process? As far as Patty’s concerned, she hadn’t had another person in the room while she was singing before. It was really strange for her, but Butch wanted that record to be the first time we played the songs and some of them live takes. On “Grand Canyon,” you can hear those live drums and live vocals. You can hear the urgency in it. It made us terrified the whole time.

CHRIS LEO PALERMINO @indiecalp letters@metro.us
Amanda Palmer is ready to resurrect The Dresden Dolls again — for a couple of nights, at least. For the uninitiated, the Dresden Dolls is Palmer’s dark cabaret group formed with multiinstrumentalist Brian Viglione in 2000. Over the next decade, the beloved duo performed piano-anddrum tunes with a theatrical, punk rock slant. While they have mostly been on hiatus since 2008, Palmer and Viglione will reunite this weekend for at least a couple more “giant blowout presentations.” We chat with Palmer about her musical relationship with Viglione, the upcoming shows and at least one new song. Why are you reuniting for these shows? We missed playing music together — having played with dozens of other musicians and drummers, I can know now with certainty that there’s nothing else like Brian Viglione. He and I have a
psychic musical aptitude with one another that I have never found with another musician. What’s it like playing songs like “Girl Anachronism” and “Coin-Operated Boy” years later? It’s really satisfying. It’s like putting on a favorite old pair of pants you find at the bottom of the drawer you forgot that you had that you wore nonstop for two years and that you thought you lost. There’s just something really comfortable and wonderful about going back to these songs that I still totally believe in. And so for the upcoming shows, you’re going to be playing a mix of older and newer material? We’re going to be playing a bunch of old material and some lesser known Dresden Dolls B sides that the fans will all know really well; some brand new songs — or at least one new song — and some exciting covers. The Dresden Dolls are always excited about covering other people’s material because there aren’t that many piano and drum rock bands out there. In the past, we’ve covered everything from Fugazi to musical theater stuff to
Black Sabbath. Can you talk at all about the new song? Well I have a bunch of new material that I just co-wrote with my friend Jason Webley … But I also write songs really quickly so I might bang out some new material just in the next [few days] so that Brian and I can put together stuff that feels really fresh. One of the other reasons you decided to do these shows is because the Coney Island Amphitheater reached out to you. Why is Coney Island special? It feels like a no-brainer that the Dresden Dolls and Coney Island go hand-in-hand. We are the bastion of weirdness. We’re also bringing back the brigade which is our loosely organized troupe of performance artists and visual artists. Actors and freaky people are going to be doing sideshow entertainment as is super befitting for Coney Island. Is there any chance that we’ll be hearing more from the Dresden Dolls in the future? I would say that there is a high chance that the Dresden Dolls are too good to ever go away.

Behind ‘Stranger Things’
“In the end, it’s fun that fans discuss and decide which season is better,” says Ross. CURTIS BAKER/NETFLIX
The Duffer brothers on reviving the ’80s and what’s next. JOSE BARRETO Metro World News letters@metro.us
Netflix’s summer hit “Stranger Things” has amassed a cult following since its mid-July debut. And now that most have binged the sci-fi series steeped in ’80s nostalgia, the pressure for a sequel is on for sibling creators Matt and Ross Duffer. “Just by hearing the question we get stressed,” says Matt with a laugh. “I know that we are now on the radar and many people want to know what will happen, but we try not to think about it.” The 32-year-old twins — influenced by iconic pop culture from the ’80s like Steven Spielberg films and Dungeons & Dragons — say they want to continue writing the types of stories they want to see on the screen.
But don’t expect a repeat of season one. *Signal the show’s synthheavy theme song.* “A good sequel is showing something different,” says Matt. “We don’t want to repeat the formula or fill the next season with Demogorgons.” Here the brothers chat about taking us back to the ’80s and which child stars will return. Fans have flooded the internet with theories about the series. What do you think about that? Matt: We read what fans write, and, believe it or not, we take it into account. Followers are becoming great inspirations for us. There are a lot of very creative people out there. One theory says that a second season would not see the same cast of children. M: Calm down. The kids are not going anywhere. At least not all of them
[laughs]. We want the same thing to happen like with “Harry Potter,” so the audience can see them grow. We are excited because these guys will be very recognizable later. None of them are older than 12. They were born with smartphones, so how was it for them to play kids from the ’80s? Ross: They had a lot of fun. But, in certain scenes they asked us, “What are these things?” when they used walkie-talkies. The wonderful thing is that they all played around a lot on set and became great friends while shooting — they even forgot about their phones. Are you planning for several seasons? M: We have discussed this many times and have come to the conclusion that what really worries us is to finish on a high note, and in the best way possible. I think we’re going to realize that in

uncomfortable for some. In principle, you have five children in leading roles in a show that is not for children. Also, Matt and I did not want to give in with the story. We knew this was not the typical series that would be accepted by the typical American TV station and that the road would be hard. You guys are sciencefiction fans, but do you actually believe in some things seen on the show? M: Now, it’s great to say yes without being labeled as crazy [laughs]. It’s scary and exciting to think about parallel worlds. For the series, we wanted everything to have a scientific basis. We did not want to touch spiritual or religious issues.

Crunch time begins now for Sox David Price, Matt Barnes and Hanley Ramirez need to step up down the stretch. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
With roughly a month left in the regular season it’s getting close to crunch time for the Red Sox, who are in the thick of both the American League East and the American League Wild Card races. Both races are highly contested, with multiple teams involved, which means every game counts down the stretch. Here are three players the Red Sox need to come up big in the final six weeks of the season:
David Price There is no question Price has been much better recently than he was to start the year, as after his outstanding performance against the Rays Monday night, his ERA is now exactly at 4.00, the lowest it has been since Opening Day. The Red Sox need Price to keep pitching like he has been of late — winning three straight starts after not winning once in his first five to open the sec-

ond half of the year. The Red Sox signed Price to a $30 million deal in the offseason and now is the time where he can prove to everyone exactly why he’s worth so much.
Matt Barnes The Red Sox bullpen is by far the weakest part of the roster at
this point in time and there doesn’t appear to be much relief in sight as Jonathan Papelbon likely isn’t coming to Boston. Junichi Tazawa appears worn-down and Brad Ziegler is almost 40 years old and can’t pitch almost every day. The guy who needs to step up most is Barnes, who has been given higher le-
verage situations of late, but hasn’t been able to deliver. If he can put things together like he’s shown he’s capable of in the past, he could be a very valuable pitcher in getting to Craig Kimbrel for the ninth.
Hanley Ramirez It’s been an up-and-
down type of season for Ramirez, but fortunately for the Red Sox right now is one of his most impressive stretches. Going into play Tuesday, in the last two weeks Ramirez is hitting .368/.405/.658 with 15 RBI. With David Ortiz and Mookie Betts being two of the best hitters in baseball, if
Ramirez can hit like he has, the Red Sox will have by far the most dangerous middle of the order in baseball. Perhaps no other player on the Red Sox is more important to the offense than Ramirez because when he hits, he makes the entire lineup both better and deeper.
Would Patriots trade for Josh Gordon?
Teams are poking around regarding Browns receiver Josh Gordon. GETTY IMAGES
Almost a decade ago, the Patriots landed “troubled” wide receiver Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a fourth round draft pick. The Patriots treat draft picks like gold, so parting with the fourth rounder in exchange for a player who often clashed with coaches and teammates was a legit risk. Now in 2016, the Pats are still in need of an “X” receiver and there is a “troubled” outside threat available. Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon can be had — for the right price — and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this week that “multiple teams” have reached
out to the Browns to “inquire about the availability” of the 25-yearold malcontent. Gordon will be suspended the first four games of the 2016 season after he failed a drug test in March. “I’m blessed and grateful to be granted this opportunity,” Gordon tweeted upon his reinstatement to the league after violations of the league’s substance abuse policy. “I can’t wait to get back out there and play the game I love in front of the great fans of Cleveland.” Gordon was arguably the top receiver in the NFL just three years ago as he caught 87 balls for
1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013, but he has not played in a game since Dec. 21, 2014. Gordon has been mentioned in trade rumors for years now, and it would make sense for a Browns franchise that is looking to start with a clean slate under new head coach Hue Jackson to get all perceived “poison” out of its locker room. But reports out of Cleveland make it seem as if Gordon is finally on the right track as he has developed a rapport with his friend and new Browns QB Robert Griffin III. “[Gordon] still looks the exact same and it’s just crazy,’’ cornerback
Joe Haden told Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. “He looks a little bigger. I don’t know how that happened, but he’s still out there running around, looking the same, running his routes, floating. It still looks effortless.’’ According to Cabot, the Browns turned down a second round pick and a player from the 49ers in 2013 in a proposed trade for Gordon. The Browns have different management and plenty of bad has transpired surrounding Gordon since that time, but that gives you an idea of what it would take to land Gordon in a deal. MATT BURKE
