BIDEN SEEKS TO EASE TURKEY TENSIONS OVER COUP SUSPECT GULEN

1

Vice President Joe Biden sought on Wednesday to ease tensions with Turkey over its demands for the extradition of a cleric it blames for last month’s failed coup, saying Washington was cooperating but needed evidence to meet U.S. legal standards. Speaking during a visit to Ankara, Biden’s comments came hours after President Tayyip Erdogan said Washington had “no excuse” for keeping hold of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has lived in U.S. exile since 1999. The extradition demand for Gulen and Turkish perceptions of an unsympathetic Western response to the coup attempt have chilled relations between the United States and Turkey, a NATO ally and partner in the U.S.-led war on Islamic State. TURKISH TANKS ROLL INTO SYRIA, PUSHING ISIS OUT OF KEY BORDER TOWN

2

Syrian rebels backed by Turkish special forces, tanks and warplanes entered one of Islamic State’s last strongholds on the Turkish-Syrian border on Wednesday, in Turkey’s first major U.S.-backed incursion into its southern neighbor. A column of at least nine Turkish tanks crossed into Syria with the group of largely Arab and Turkmen rebels to drive Islamic State out of Jarablus and surrounding villages. A Reuters reporter at the border witnessed intense bombardments, with palls of black smoke rising around the town. President Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was targeting both Islamic State and the Kurdish PYD party, whose gains in northern Syria have alarmed Turkey. Ankara views the PYD as an extension of Kurdish militants fighting an insurgency on its own soil, putting it at odds with Washington, which sees the group as an ally in the fight against Islamic State. HUNDREDS OF POKEMON GO FANS HIT THE STREETS OF TAIPEI

3

Hundreds of Pokemon Go enthusiasts caused a stampede in Taipei in a rush to ‘catch’ rare Pokemons. The streets in Beitou were packed with people playing the location-based game and hunting for the virtual monsters through their smartphones. Many rushed to the spot where the characters apparently appeared. “There is Snorlax, Gyarados ... Aerodactyl is a bit more common,” said one player, naming the characters that caused the commotion. So-called Pokestops are often established in parks, causing many to gather there. “Very cool, I think I have strong ones [Pokemons],” said one young player who was satisfied with the night’s outcome. The bizarre Boston forecast you never knew you wanted Thousands of Bostonians are getting their weather report from Weather Is Happening, a service that claims to be manned by an “interdimensional being” here to save the Earth from climate change. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

chris.caesar@metro.us

Getting your morning forecast can be just as personal as getting your morning news — most folks turn to their phones, others may turn on The Weather Channel. And some Bostonians put their trust in an amorphous, interdimensional entity from the “weather realm” who possesses the mind and body of a local Boston man. It’s true! Kind of: The Boston-based “Weather Is Happening” project has a Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube channel and deeply bizarre website, all with a growing following in the thousands. The one-man meteorology service offers original forecasting via its “weather lair,” and its reports are served to readers with all the delivery of an angry, Caps Lock-engaged internet commenter who also happens to be on the peak of an acid trip. The main show, Happening’s website — or “Webzone,” as he prefers — is an anxiety-producing homage to the awful web design standards of the 1990s, featuring a distracting animated background, clashing colors, and the rampant, all-caps, broken “internet English” for which Happening is so well known. In other words: It’s hideous, but at least hilariously so. According to its

Weather Is Happening’s corporeal form poses for a picture in Boston. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

“WAT” page, the site serves as “BOSTONS SOURCE 4 NO NONSENSE WEATHER NO GAMES PPL THIS IS IT THIS IS DEFINITELY IT,” explaining its meteorologist is a “WEATHER BEING” who traveled to this dimension to warn humans about the dangers of global warming. Or this one, from Aug. 22. “U GOT SUM NICE WATER LAST NITE, TH WEATHER LAIR HAD .78 INCHFALL OVR IT BRINGING UP UR MONTHS RAIN TOTES AMOUNT 2 1.38 INCH, WOWOW,” he wrote. “UR STIL IN A EXTREME DROWT, DEAL W/ IT” So, in a nutshell, Weather Is Happening is a pretty weird way to see if you should bring an umbrella to work. And Happening, staying true to surrealistic form, won’t provide a straightforward explanation for his bizarro performance art, instead insisting he is an intergalactic being here to

warn the people of Earth that these may be their last days. Reached on the phone, Happening’s self-described “corporeal form” sported an affected and often wildly exaggerated Massachusetts accent, saying he was here to help make sure humans “repent to the weather lords.” “[Weather beings] show up on planets where the state of hyper-capitalism is destroying your planet, and tell people that maybe they should repent to the weather lords,” Happening’s corporeal form explained. “Your planet, like so many … will just end up destroyed by fancy oligarchs and powerful people that are destroying the atmosphere — against the will of the people, or whatever [alien creature] they might be.” OK. But why type it like that? “It’s more comfortable to write like that,” he said. “Not to be an alarmist, but I mean, it’s a little

bit alarming.” Happening said the service issues forecasts based both on “powerful visions” he receives in his dreams and the amateur weather station he maintains with the help of his corporeal host. Weather Is Happening also received a $1,000 grant from Boston’s Awesome Foundation last December, which allowed the service to expand its operation with a green screen and digital camcorder for YouTube broadcasts, as well as a high-end Davis Vantage weather station. Eventually, the weather being said he’d love to expand his service to other locations, but just happened to find himself in Boston after his transdimensional journey. “I’d love to do the whole planet someday,” he shrugged. “But right now, all I can do is Boston.” May the weather lords smile upon you, humble weather man.

OUT OF AN MIT CLASS, A FIRM REDESIGNS THE WHEELCHAIR When Tish Scolnik saw an ad for the “Wheelchair Design in Developing Countries” class in a hallway at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology her freshman year, she had no idea how much it would shape her career. She was still figuring out what she wanted to major in and figured this class would teach her more about mechanical engineering while satisfying her interest in medicine. Now, Scolnik is the CEO of GRIT, a startup that makes the Freedom Chair — a new type of wheelchair that allows its users to get across all types of terrain. It was because of that class that Scolnik and Mario Bollini (now GRIT’s CTO), first began thinking about the many ways wheelchairs can be limiting. “We saw how existing [wheelchairs] were failing. They limited people to the pavement and didn’t really afford an opportunity to get off the pavement onto grass or onto a trail,” Scolnik said. “There are some sort of off-road chairs, but they’re very expensive and not used that much.”

CANDID CAMPUS Metro’s look inside Boston’s college campuses

Scolnik, Bollini and other students that were involved knew that a successful, all-terrain wheelchair would have to encompass a few key factors: It would have to be robust and rugged enough to work on rocky terrain, it would have to be affordable, and it would have to be easy to maintain and repair. The students first focused on research, but instead of beginning by looking at a traditional wheelchair’s design, they focused instead on the human body and “fundamental biomechanics,” Scolnik said. Basically, info on the

upper body of how much power it can generate in certain positions. “Think of lifting weights at the gym,” Scolnik said. “It’s easier when lifting in certain directions. How can we best use that for propulsion?” That led to the Freedom Chair’s lever system, where bars that you push are connected to the wheels, rather than relying on pushing the rims to move forward. The levers let you get more leverage and torque to push yourself over obstacles, Scolnik explained. The next thing they needed to know was exactly what types of terrain people wanted to travel on, and so they conducted surveys. From that information came the decision to use as many off-the-shelf bicycle components as possible. “All the moving parts are standard bicycle parts, so you can service it or customize it at a bike shop,” Scolnik said. That includes the option to swap out the automatically included mountain bike wheels for beach or snow tires, too. In the process of designing the

The Freedom Chair PROVIDED

Freedom Chair, Scolnik said they were continuously prototyping, testing, and building different designs, and when they graduated from MIT, they realized that their prototype was an actual product that people wanted. It was thanks to that class, and MIT’s emphasis on allowing students to be handson, that led to that. You’re learning the theory but actually putting the theory into practice as well, by actually making something,” Scolnik said. “The school’s motto is ‘mens et manus,’ which means ‘mind and hand,’ so it’s a combination of the theoretical and practical.” KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Scientists find Earthlike planet circling sun’s nearest neighbor Scientists have discovered a planet that appears to be similar to Earth circling the star closest to the sun, potentially a major step in the quest to find out if life exists elsewhere in the universe, research published on Wednesday showed. The relative proximity of the planet, known as Proxima b, gives scientists a better chance to eventually capture an image of it, to help them establish whether it has an atmosphere and water, which is believed to be necessary for life. Future studies may reveal if any atmosphere contains tell-tale chemicals of biological life, such as methane, according to a paper published in this week’s issue of the journal Nature. “The key question of

our initiative was whether there were potentially lifebearing planets orbiting these stars. We know now there is at least one planet with some characteristics similar to the Earth,” said Pete Worden, a former top NASA manager, who was speaking at a European Southern Observatory webcast news conference to announce the find. The planet, located about 4.2 light-years from Earth, or 25 trillion miles, is the closest of some 3,500 planets that have been discovered beyond the solar system since

)NJURED

1995, according to the paper. “This planetary system is much closer than any other that we know so detailed investigation is easier,” astronomer Ansgar Reiners, with the University of Gottingen in Germany, told reporters on a conference call. Astronomers got their first hint of a planet circling the sun’s small dim neighbor star in 2013. But they needed additional observations, using more precise instruments, to make a definitive call. An international team of 31 scientists found the planet after careful and repeated measurements of slight shifts in the color of the light coming from its host star, Proxima Centauri, which is a small, dim star in the Alpha Centauri system. Gunmen attack American University in Kabul, students flee Foreign staff and dozens of pupils were trapped in the compound hours after the attack. Suspected militants stormed the Kabul campus of the American University of Afghanistan on Wednesday with some students jumping from second-floor windows to escape the gunfire and explosions, witnesses and officials said. News of casualties was sketchy, but the head of hospitals in the Afghan capital said at least one person had been killed and 14 students wounded in the assault. “Many students jumped from the second floor, some broke their legs and some hurt their

head trying to escape,” Abdullah Fahimi, a student who escaped, told Reuters. He injured his ankle making the leap. “We were in the class when we heard a loud explosion followed by gunfire. It was very close. Some students were crying, others were screaming.” A senior interior ministry official said that elite Afghan forces had surrounded the university and witnesses at the scene said special forces had entered the walled compound where gunfire that had lasted for more than an hour had since stopped. “There are two gunmen hiding inside the building and a clearing operation is ongoing to eliminate them,” interior ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, said. Ahmad Mukhtar, another student who fled the scene, said the gunmen had got into the university buildings despite security measures including three or four armed guards and watchtowers. He added that he believed the attack had started at the main gate into the compound. “I finished my class and was about to leave when I heard a few gunshots and a huge explosion, followed by more gunfire,” he said. “I ran toward the emergency exit with other students, climbed the wall and

jumped outside.” Kabul police chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi, told Reuters that the attack began with a car bomb and several attackers had entered the campus. Islamist militant groups, mainly the Afghan Taliban and a local offshoot of Islamic State, have claimed a string of recent atrocities aimed at destabilizing the country and toppling the Western-backed government of President Ashraf Ghani. No one has claimed responsibility for the university attack. It is the second time this month that the university or its staff have been targeted. Two teachers, an American and an Australian, remain missing after being abducted at gunpoint from a road nearby on Aug. 7. Taliban insurgents control large swathes of Afghanistan, and local armed forces are struggling to contain them, especially in the provinces of Helmand to the south and Kunduz to the north. NATO ended its combat mission in December 2014, but thousands of troops remain to train and assist Afghan forces, while several thousand more U.S. soldiers are engaged in a separate mission focusing on al Qaeda and Islamic State. Chicago’s police detective force dwindles as murder rate soars

Every two weeks, Cynthia Lewis contacts the detectives investigating the homicide of her brother on Chicago’s South Side almost a year ago. They have had no success finding who shot Tyjuan Lewis, a 43-yearold father of 15, near his home in the quiet Roseland neighborhood of single-family houses. The death of Lewis, who delivered the mail for 20 years, is one of hundreds of slayings in 2015 that have gone unsolved as the number of homicides soared in Chicago, piling pressure on a shrinking detective force. In a city with as many as 90 shootings a week, homicides this year are on track to hit their highest level since 1997. Chicago’s murder clearance rate, a measurement of solved and closed cases, is one of the country’s lowest, another sign of problems besetting police in the third biggest city in the United States. Over the past 10 years, Chicago has consistently had one of the lowest clearance rates of any of the country’s 10 biggest cities, according to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Chicago Police Department. Last year, Chicago police had 480 murder cases and solved 223 murders that had been commit-

ted in 2015 or before, for a clearance rate of 46 percent, according to Chicago police figures. That is well below the average national rate of 63 percent, and the average rate of 68 percent for cities with populations of more than one million in the past decade, according to FBI figures. Chicago, with a population of 2.7 million, has more shootings and homicides than any other U.S. city, according to FBI and Chicago police data, and more shootings by law enforcement than other major cities, according to police department figures on officer-involved shootings compiled by Reuters. Its police department is under federal investigation for the use of lethal force by its officers. Detectives and policing experts interviewed this week said Chicago struggles to solve murders because of declining numbers of detectives, the high number of cases per detective, and because witnesses mistrust the police and fear retaliation from gangs. The number of detectives on the Chicago police force has dropped to 922 from 1,252 in 2008. One detective who retired two months ago said investigators are overwhelmed. Not all of the detectives are assigned exclusively to homicide cases. REUTERS

BRIEF California bill to repeal ‘tampon tax’ heads to governor California lawmakers sent a bill to end state sales taxes on feminine hygiene products to Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, the latest success for a nationwide bipartisan effort to end the socalled tampon tax. The bill, which would add tampons, sanitary napkins and other menstrual products to a list of necessities like food and

prescription medicines that are not taxed, won unanimous support in the state Assembly on Tuesday, Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia said. “Fundamentally, this is about gender equity and leveling the field,” Garcia, who represents parts of suburban Los Angeles, said in a news release. “Every month, for 40 years of our lives, we are taxed for being born women.” At least 15 states have

introduced legislation to repeal sales taxes on menstrual products. Brown New York repealed its tax in June, joining Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and New Jersey. The movement appeals to Republicans because it repeals a tax and is favored by Democrats,

who say it eliminates an unfair burden on women. “It’s great to see both Democrats and Republicans coming together on this important effort all across the country,” said Republican Assemblywoman Ling-Ling Chang, who represents the Los Angeles suburb of Diamond Bar. If Brown signs the bill, the state will lose about $20 million in tax revenue, according to a legislative analysis. REUTERS

Death toll rises as quake flattens towns in Italy The 6.2-magnitude quake razed homes and buckled roads in a cluster of mountain communities 85 miles east of Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south.

Rescue teams were working through the night to try to find survivors under the rubble that remained of central Italian towns flattened by an earthquake that hit in the early hours of Wednesday, killing at least 159 people. One hotel that collapsed in the small town of Amatrice probably had about 70 guests, and only seven bodies had so far been recovered, said the mayor of the town that was one of the worst hit by the quake. “Tonight will be our first nightmare night,” said Alessandro Gabrielli, one of hundreds preparing to sleep in tents erected by rescue workers in fields and parking lots, each one housing 12

people whose homes had been destroyed. Rescuers working with emergency lighting in the darkness saved a 10-yearold girl, pulling her out of the rubble alive, where she had lain for some 17 hours in the hamlet of Pescara del Tronto. Many other children were not so lucky. In the nearby village of Accumoli, a family of four, including two boys aged 8 months and 9 years, were buried when their house imploded. As rescue workers carried away the body of the infant, carefully covered by a small blanket, the children’s grandmother blamed God: “He took them all at once,” she wailed.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said the Cabinet would meet on Thursday to decide measures to help the affected communities. “Today is a day for tears, tomorrow we can talk of reconstruction,” he told reporters late on Wednesday as he announced 120 bodies had been found and 368 people had been taken to hospital. The death toll rose to 159 a few hours later. With people still unaccounted for, the civil protection department warned it could climb higher. Aerial photographs showed whole areas of Amatrice, last year voted one of Italy’s most beautiful historic towns, flattened by the quake. Inhabitants of the four

worst-hit small towns rise by as much as tenfold in the summer, and many of those killed or missing were visitors. Amatrice’s mayor, Sergio Pirozzi, said its best-known accommodation, Hotel Roma, which probably had around 70 guests at the time of the quake, had collapsed and only seven bodies had been found under the rubble. The civil protection agency said it was trying to determine how many people were staying in the hotel. Umbria was also affected. All three regions are dotted with centuries-old buildings susceptible to earthquakes. Italy’s earthquake institute, INGV, said the epicenter was near Accumoli and Amatrice, which lie between the larger towns of Ascoli Piceno to the northeast and Rieti to the southwest.

It was relatively shallow at 2.5 miles below the earth’s surface. INGV reported 150 aftershocks in the 12 hours following the initial quake, the strongest measuring 5.5. Italy sits on two fault lines, making it one of the most seismically active countries in Europe. The last major earthquake to hit the country struck the central city of L’Aquila in 2009, killing more than 300 people. The most deadly temblor since the start of the 20th century came in 1908, when an earthquake followed by a tsunami killed an estimated 80,000 people in the southern regions of Reggio Calabria and Sicily.

Mykki, a performance artist turned MC, is at the epicenter of all that is forward-thinking and progressive. He’s also a member of the fashion and art worlds’ coolest kids (Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver, Count of Milan’s Marcelo Burlon and artist Rashaad Newsome, to name a few). Not to mention Mykki is the godfather of queer rap. His new eponymous album promises to provoke your mind while you tear up the dance floor.

Die Antwoord, “Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid,” Sept. 16 Before they became the South African music act who beefed with Lady Gaga, tried to pick a fight with Drake and accused “Suicide Squad” of plagiarism, they were the underground countercultural hit. They’re describing their new album as “dark and ratty,” which sounds about right.

Belt it out

Idina Menzel, “Idina,” Sept. 23 Kristin Chenoweth, “The Art of Elegance,” Sept. 23 Musical lovers, listen up: Broadway majors (and the original “Wicked” co-stars) Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are releasing albums in the same week. I repeat, the same week! The only thing that could possibly be more exciting is if they were releasing a joint album, covering the “Hamilton” soundtrack. … Buy some honey and a box of chamomile tea, because you’re going to be doing a lot of belting in the shower this fall.

Psychedelia and prog rock live in Sean Lennon’s bones. It’s what his father, John, helped pioneer with the Beatles. It’s what he primarily listens to. And it’s the taking off point for the Claypool Lennon Delirium, his new psych-pop musical project with Primus’ legendary, whimsical bassist, Les Claypool. “That music attracts me because it’s very elaborate and sophisticated,” says Lennon, who references the Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson and even Miles Davis as some of the progressive artists he enjoys. “It takes a lot of work. It’s ambitious. It’s also fun. It’s more dreamlike because it takes you from here to there — to different headspaces within one song.” His relationship with Claypool began when Lennon’s band, the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, opened for Primus. After a jam session backstage where the two “clicked,” Clay-

While the subject matter seems more serious than the duo’s colorful, meandering musical tone, Lennon notes that it’s almost intrinsic to their style. “There’s this sort of tension between Sean Lennon Les’ and my desire GETTY IMAGES to just rock out and make music but also our tendency to tune into frequencies of topical events that are dark or difficult to deal with for all of us,” he explains. “It’s just there, so it manifests itself naturally.”

pool invited Lennon to his California home studio, Rancho Relaxo, to write. It certainly worked: The duo had completed an 11-song album, called “Monolith of Phobos,” about a month later. “The first song that Les came in with was called ‘Captain Lariat’ and that sort of set the tone [for the record],” says the 40-year-old artist. “He had this whole mythology about this character named Captain Lariat who was sailing in the salty seas.” The entire album follows this tone, often melding dark, otherworldly tales with dense, proggy soundscapes. “Bubbles Burst” tells the tale of Lennon’s bizarre, fantasylike experience hanging with Michael Jackson’s pet chimpanzee at the Neverland Ranch. “The song wound up also being kind of a meta-

The Obamas movie might work even if it wasn’t about the Obamas, which is one of the best things you can say about it. It if wasn’t about them, it would be little more than a nice indie romance about a date between two nice people, one who’s (at ďŹ rst) more into the other then vice versa. It just happens its heroes are Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama. It’s a cinematic imagining of the ďŹ rst couple’s semi-awkward ďŹ rst semi-date circa 1989, when Barack (Parker Sawyers) talks Michelle (Tika Sumpter), then colleagues, into joining him at a low-income neighborhood meeting, with the express purpose of nudging it into something more. Michelle is irritated at ďŹ rst, but she slowly gives in, and the rest is earth-shattering and annoyingly contentious history. The young Obamas sure are cute, though Tanne gracefully adds just enough heaviness that the movie doesn’t oat

Tika Sumpter is young Michelle Robinson to Parker Sawyers’ young Barack Obama in the indie “Southside with You. ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

There’s the neighborhood meeting, at which Barack shows o his oratory prowess while Michelle tries not to melt, plus a whimsical trip to see that “Do the Right Thingâ€? movie everyone’s talking about. Race is a favorite discussion point, as is career ambition and Barack’s father. Tanne ladles this on a little too much, if anything,

though he goes light with winkwinky references to Barry and Michelle’s future. (There’s no part where a burly bouncer at a bar with a fox for hair asks for his long-form birth certiďŹ cate.) His leads go subtle, too. Sawyers’ O is a bit too close to an impersonation, but he captures the way Obama is cagey yet charismatic. Even better is Sumpter who gives us a version of Michelle who’s stern

yet irty, clearly more conďŹ dent than the man who will one day lead the free world. Watching her swaggering Michelle, it’s strange to think of her as a mere ďŹ rst lady, just as it would to watch young Hillary in a movie about the Clintons’ ďŹ rst date. “Southside with Youâ€? is slight, and that’s part of the charm. It’s the pleasant movie we deserve after a needlessly contentious eight years. MATT PRIGGE

“Don’t Breathe” Director: Fede Alvarez Stars: Jane Levy, Stephen Lang Rating: R Unlike the idiots who break into the wrong man’s house to steal his booty, “Don’t Breathe” is very delicate. It’s a dirty, whiteknuckle thriller that knows the genre enough to play with it. It’s a home invasion picture, but inverted: Our not-quite-heroes are a gang of young thieves who break into a house only to find themselves trapped inside it. They have company in their mark: a blind Gulf War vet (Stephen Lang), who’s willing enough to take them all out. Toying with genre expectations is one thing, but “Don’t Breathe” does something else: It technically gives you no one to root for. To be more precise: It wants your stance on each character to be closer to “It’s complicated.” There’s Rocky (Jane Levy), a single mom desperate to take her young daughter away from a Detroit trailer park. That’s nice, but it means exploiting the not-so-good graces of both a cornrowed braggart who actually calls himself Money (Daniel Zovatto) and a nice

Edgar Ramirez plays legendary and somewhat infamous boxer Roberto Duran, alongside Robert De Niro as his coach, in “Hands of Stone.” THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

guy (Dylan Minnette) who can get them access to swank digs because his dad runs a local home security firm. And that also means literally robbing a man blind, one who’s come into a hefty settlement and wrestles with both the trauma of war and the deaths of his family. But that their target — who’s credited as The Blind Man — will go above and beyond in protecting his stash makes things complicated, too. Once “Don’t Breathe” is good and settled in the house, director Fede Alvarez (of the mega-bloody “Evil Dead” remake) gets to the business of mucking with audience sympathy, jostling our sympathy between invaders and the invadee. MP

“Hands of Stone” Director: Jonathan Jakubowicz Stars: Edgar Ramirez, Robert De Niro Rating: R “Hands of Stone” isn’t a hagiography; it’s not even a movie that straightens a record. It’s closer to a yes-man who tells their boss their speech was great, ignoring the part where his pants fell down. The subject is Roberto Duran, one of the greatest boxers who’s never scored a movie. You think he’d deserve one: He pulled himself up from the bootstraps of Panama’s streets to hold world titles in four different weight classes. He had a punch so hard he earned the eponymous nickname. But here’s the rub: In the seventh round of a highly-publicized rematch with

Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980, he abruptly called it off, taking his toys and leaving with the whole world watching. There are many ways to tackle this. A fascinating film could be made that explored the difficulties of being a star. Instead it goes so far out of its way to portray him as a victim, to spin his rep-shattering act as sort of defensible, that you can’t help smelling a rat. It’s a rise-and-fall-and-riseagain romp, whose middle section is devoted to Duran gorging like Caligula on his wealth. It dwells so much on his bacchanal period that it becomes clear this the movie is pulling a bait and switch. In fact, it spends a lot of time pinning all the blame on his manager. “Hands of Stone” may look like a standard-issue inspirational sports saga, but it’s really cinema as damage control. MP

Southern Kin’s shrimp n’ grits PROVIDED

Hungry and homesick? As students return and new Sept. 1 residents arrive, we know it’s only a matter of time before your stomach is grumbling for more than just wicked good clam chowder. If you’re searching for a taste of your favorite regional cuisine, here are some of our favorites — some more authentic than others, but all decidedly tasty.

Charleston: Shrimp n’ grits Southern Kin Cookhouse, 500 Assembly Row, Somerville, southernkincookhouse.com Before you scoff at this classic made fancy, rest assured: Southern Kin still cooks up some top-notch comfort food. Its spin on dish features gulf shrimp, spicy green peppers and hearty sausage resting atop creamy white-cheddar grits.

San Francisco: Burritos El Pelón Taqueria 92 Peterborough St., Boston 617-262-9090, elpelon.com For those who roll their eyes at Chipotle: This tiny taqueria in Fenway knows a thing or two about Mexican street eats. Its crown jewel of burritos, “El Guapo,” is stuffed with rice, steak, beans, all the fixings and—wait for it—fried plantains.

Chicago: Deep dish pizza Worden Hall, 22 West Broadway, South Boston, wordenhall.com Calling all Chicagoans: Boston’s take on deep-dish is worth a taste. Try the soppressata and garlic sausage pie, a pizza conceived in meat-and-cheese lovers’ heaven. Oozing with mozzarella, provolone and rustic tomato sauce, this is a fork-and-knife situation for sure.

Miami: Cubano El Oriental de Cuba, 416 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, elorientaldecuba.net Miami’s ooey-gooey roast pork and Swiss cheese sandwiches with mustard and pickles are a street-food classic. Be sure to come hungry. El Oriental’s traditional take features layers — savory, salty and tangy —piled high on a thick toasted roll.

Nashville: Hot chicken State Park, 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, statepark.is State Park’s take on Music City’s most-loved chicken dish is unforgettably crispy and screaming hot. Served with a green bean salad in lieu of the traditional pickle chips, this slightly revamped take is still, at its core, just good Nashville cooking.

Rockin’ steady Billy Gibbons talks ZZ Top’s ‘telepathic relationship.’

CHRIS LEO PALERMINO @indiecalp letters@metro.us

Five decades of rollicking, blues rock ’n’ roll later, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons is just as cool and curious as his early days. He still has his characteristic on-stage swagger. He’s still regularly paying homage to his heroes like B.B. King and blues songwriter Jimmy Reed. And he’s still pushing the envelope: Last year, he recorded a Cuban-inspired solo record called “Perfectamundo. Ahead of shows celebrating ZZ Top’s “Greatest Hits Live compilation (out now), we asked the 66-year-old Gibbons to look back on his musical career. While earlier material

with ZZ Top focused in on blues rock, your records from the ’80s shifted to include more synths. What do you think synths added to ZZ Top? They are two approaches toward a common ground. Although the mechanics may differ, the sounds aim to become part of the same thing. So many years later, you’re still playing with all of ZZ Top’s original members. What’s your musical relationship with them like? It’s steady as she goes. Dusty [Hill] and Frank [Beard] and I have a telepathic relationship, and that’s pretty much been the case since we first got together. We communicate with each other non-verbally; it’s somewhat intuitive regarding what each of us is about to deliver. It’s an uncanny exchange and it remains a constant. I can probably

tell you what Frank shot in golf today without having to ask him and, likewise, Dusty probably knows how many tacos make our take-out order. What did you learn about music from recording and performing Perfectamundo? It was really an excursion of putting the beat up front and the rhythm out back. For this unexpected venture into the former unknown, we began to come to grips with the power of the punch and get why it works.

Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway Distance: 424 miles Channel “Jurassic Park” on this route that takes in some of the West’s top dinosaur sites. Start your trip in Grand Junction, Colorado, and drive northwest to the aptly named town of Dinosaur. Spend a few hours at Dinosaur National Monument, where you can see live digs and a paleontology lab. Continue west into Utah, where you can visit the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum; kids love the garden of life-size dinosaurs. Finish your trip in Moab, where the Museum of Moab has more dino displays.

Route 66’s Singing Road Distance: 38 miles A drive on the Mother Road (now known as

ing north and continuing along Lake Ontario on Route 18. A historic detour worth taking is Murphy Orchards and Underground Railroad in Burt. Continue on Route 104 to Oswego to stop at the Fort Ontario State Site, the Safe Haven Museum and the Oswego Lighthouse. Finish at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River at Cape Vincent.

I-90 in Washington

Interstate 40) is often at the top of a road trippers’ bucket list, but the iconic route has a twist. A strip of “musical road” was installed near the village of Tijeras, east of Albuquerque. A series of rumble strips on the highway is calibrated so if you

drive the speed limit (45 mph), the vibrations in your car buzz to the tune of “America the Beautiful.” Start your drive in Albuquerque, then cruise east through the Cibola National Forest until you reach Tijeras and the singing road. Continue on

to Moriarty, where you’ll see some Route 66 relics, such as the Sunset Motel and some old bars. Note: The road only plays music if you’re driving east.

Coast to Coast Distance: 3,024 miles If you’re going to drive across the country, you might as well take the long route: Interstate 90, which connects Boston to Seattle along the longest interstate in the U.S. You’ll pass through 13 states, dropping down around the Great Lakes, then up across the Great Plains and the Continental Divide. You could do the drive in about six days, but it’s best to take your time and make detours to some of the nation’s top sites, including Niagara Falls, Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park.

Presidential Trail Distance: 1,045 miles Florida’s Presidential Trail strings together an impressive lineup of historic sites. Start in Pensacola, where Andrew Jackson served as Florida’s first governor after accepting the land from Spain. Cruise across northern Florida over to Daytona Beach, where you can dine at The Cellar, a restaurant that used to be Warren G. Harding’s home. Onward in Central Florida, you’ll find some tributes to America’s leaders at Walt Disney World’s Hall of Presidents and Clermont’s The Presidents Hall of Fame. Over

MATT MCGEE, FLICKR on the Gulf Side, check out where presidential hopefuls gathered in Tampa for the 2012 Republican National Convention. Finally, swing down into Key West for a peek at Harry Truman’s Little White House.

Lake Champlain Byway Distance: 134 miles A fresh, green summer escape from muggy East Coast cities, this route skirts the eastern shore of Lake Champlain in northwest Vermont. Driving south to north, the landscape rolls through scenes of farmland, mountains (both the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks are visible) and small towns. Hiking and swimming options abound — the Champlain Islands at the north end of the byway are a prime spot for water. Stop in Burlington to fuel up on the region’s local food at Farmhouse Tap & Grill and try some local beer.

Great Lakes Distance: 315 miles Begin at Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse on Lake Erie in New York, where you can take a harbor cruise to learn about local shipwrecks. Continue northward on Route 190 around the lake and take a breather at majestic Niagara Falls. Enjoy Fort Niagara State Park to experience living history programs and the stunning views, before travel-

Distance: 383 miles Dense with aromatic forests, the Blue Ridge Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park in North Carolina and Virginia’s Skyline Drive. The Poor’s Farmer’s Market at mile 178 is a great spot to pick up a quilt and the Blue Ridge Music Center (mile 213) is a must to experience and appreciate Appalachian music. Take in the best views at Waterrock Knob at mile 451 and be sure to explore towns such as Blowing Rock (mile 291) and Little Switzerland (mile 334). The bookend cities of Charlottesville and Asheville are worth a day or two each.

Barbecue Trail Distance: 1,224 miles Work up an appetite and pace yourself for the best barbecue the South has to offer. Starting in Holy Hill, South Carolina, the “dark” and “light” pork of Sweatman’s makes for the perfect starter. Be sure to order a side of the house mustard sauce. Then, hit the road and follow I-20 west until Birmingham, where Miss Myra’s Pit Bar-B-Q’s vinegary, mayo-based white sauce will win you over. Next, head southwest to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the iconic The Shed, just outside of Biloxi. Here, take in live blues with your pork ribs before continuing on to New Orleans, where you can digest several days of history, music, food and fun. Hit The Joint, where the ribs are said to be the best in the city. Your last stop is Austin for two barbecue landmarks. The Salt Lick is known for its beef brisket. Finally, brave the lines at Franklin Barbecue, hailed by many as the best barbecue in the U.S.

MCGREGOR CAN BE KING AGAIN OPINION

DANNY PICARD @dannypicard

The king is back. Or so he says. Last weekend, Conor McGregor defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 202 by way of majority decision. One would call it a revenge win for McGregor, after he tapped out to Diaz back in March at UFC 196. Both fights took place at the 170-pound welterweight division, with McGregor having to make the late jump up from 155 pounds, after his original UFC 196 opponent — lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos — pulled out with a foot injury. That fight was already a jump up in weight for McGregor, who had previously won the featherweight championship at 145 pounds. After his win on Saturday, McGregor expressed his desire to return to a lower weight class. “I came up to 170, faced the bigger man, overcame adversity,” he said while standing in

the octagon. “Now you want this trilogy? It’s on my terms. Come back down to 155 and we’ll do it.” McGregor began the postfight interview by grabbing the microphone and screaming, “Surprise, surprise mother [expletive], the king is back!” As he then proceeded to talk about a trilogy with Diaz, I wondered what exactly he was calling himself the king of. The king of the money game, or the king of the fight game? First thing’s first. If you think there won’t be a third fight between McGregor and Diaz, you’re nuts. The question is, whose terms will it be on? Will it be on McGregor’s at 155 pounds? Will it be on Diaz’ back at 170? Or will it be on Dana White’s? According to White, a McGregor/Diaz trilogy won’t be happening right away. White either wants McGregor to defend his featherweight title against interim champion Jose Aldo at 145, or, give up his featherweight title and face current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. This is what White is saying publicly, at least. Privately, you have to think he’s already

planning where and when McGregor/Diaz III will take place. But again, on whose terms? If McGregor wants to be the king of the fight game, he should certainly stick to his guns on making Diaz come down to 155. Either that or just avoid a

trilogy with Diaz altogether. Even going into UFC 196, I told you I didn’t agree with McGregor stepping into the octagon with Diaz. The risk was far greater than the reward. Diaz wasn’t a no-name fighter in UFC. But compared to what

Friday night Wright

McGregor was, heading into that first fight back in March, Diaz was, in fact, a nobody. When I called him that on my podcast over the winter, the MMA season-ticket holders came out throwing haymakers, defending Diaz and his status

in UFC. Considering McGregor’s status in the sport, I’m sorry, he didn’t need to go anywhere near a Diaz fight, not at 170. But money talks. And next thing you know, McGregor was bulking up and taking on an opponent that he didn’t have to, on terms that weren’t his. What happened? The “king” was humbled. Down on the mat. In a chokehold. Tapping out. It’s one thing to talk the talk. It’s another thing to walk the walk. McGregor had always done both. Then he and White got greedy. They took it too far. They entered a fight they didn’t have to be in. Now that McGregor has his revenge, it’s time to get back to being the king of the fight game. It’s time to get back down to 145 or 155 and dominate. Talk the talk. Walk the walk. Be the king. Just make sure you do it on your terms. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” every weekday at dannypicard.com & on iTunes. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM. Follow him on Twitter @DannyPicard.
