ACTOR GENE WILDER DEAD AT 83

1

Actor Gene Wilder, best known for his role in the fantasy film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” and comedic star turns in such Mel Brooks farces as “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein,” died at age 83, his family said in a statement. Wilder, an often frantic presence in some of the funniest movies of the 1970s and ’80s with his kinky curls and startled blue eyes, succumbed to complications from Alzheimer’s disease, which he had battled privately for the past Gene Wilder GETTY IMAGES three years, the statement said. POLICE: SOCIAL MEDIA ADDS TO PANIC OVER ‘GUNFIRE’ AT LAX

2

A security panic that crippled Los Angeles International Airport and sent hundreds of passengers fleeing from terminals was triggered by reports of gunfire that proved false but were amplified by word-of-mouth and social media, police said on Monday. The shooting scare on Sunday night, which marked the worst security disruption in nearly three years at the second-busiest U.S. airport, began with police receiving a call reporting gunshots fired at a United Airlines gate inside Terminal 8, police said. The initial call came in moments after airport police had responded to separate reports of a man wearing a black cape and mask and carrying a sword in the baggage area of an adjacent terminal, according to airport police spokesman Robert Pedregon. WHITE HOUSE SAYS IT SEES A PATH TO APPROVAL OF PACIFIC TRADE DEAL

3

The White House said on Monday it could still win congressional approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact before President Barack Obama leaves office, and warned that failing to do so would undermine U.S. leadership in the region. “The president is going to make a strong case that we have made progress and there is a path for us to get this done before the president leaves office,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told a news briefing ahead of Obama’s trip to Asia this week. Obama has made the 12-nation free trade deal the centerpiece of a diplomatic “pivot” to Asia, but the prospects for congressional approval have looked increasingly dim, with both major presidential candidates — Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump — standing opposed. Weiner deletes his Twitter, loses wife in latest sexting scandal Carlos Danger is at it again. ALEXIS SACHDEV and AMANDA MIKELBERG letters@metro.us

Longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin announced Monday plans to separate from husband Anthony Weiner amid new allegations of his old habit. In a scathing report that hit newsstands Monday morning, the New York Post revealed Weiner, a former congressman and one-time New York City mayoral candidate, had been sending sizzling text messages to a “busty brunette,” including a clothed crotch shot that also featured his 5-year-old son Jordan sleeping beside him. Hours after the Post published its report online, Weiner deleted his Twitter account. Conversations between Weiner and the woman, who spoke to the Post on the condition of anonymity, began in January 2015 and continued through earlier this month. In an interview with the paper, Weiner said he and the mystery woman “have been friends for some time.” Later Monday, Abedin, his wife of six years, announced she would be seeking a separation: “After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband. Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life. During this difficult time, I ask for respect for our privacy.” It’s been reported that Abedin only became aware of the new photo on Sunday when the Post called to seek commentary from Weiner on the story, forcing him to admit his latest indiscretions to Abedin while they were both in the

Hamptons with their son. Weiner then returned to the city alone on Monday.

Weiner who was using the alias “Carlos Danger.” The new revelations sank his candidacy.

Continually in the ‘Danger’ zone

‘Compulsivity’

Earlier in August, the Post revealed Weiner to be the victim of a “catfish” trap in which a Republican activist posed as a paramour and exchanged suggestive texts with Weiner, under the handle “Nikki.” Weiner’s first indiscretion was in 2011 when he accidentally publicly tweeted an explicit photo of himself that was meant to be sent privately to an adult woman follower. He initially denied posting the image, but later held a press conference to admit and apologize for carrying on online relationships with about six women over a three-year period. When the photo surfaced weeks later, Weiner resigned from Congress on June 21. Then, while attempting a political comeback in a New York mayoral bid in 2013, a 22-year-old woman by the name of Sydney Leathers came forward to say she had been exchanging explicit photos and texts with

While not necessarily a “sex addiction” Dr. N.G. Berrill, a Brooklyn-based forensic psychologist who does not treat Weiner, said his repeated, high-risk indiscretions are “reflective of a paraphilic disorder.” Colloquially known as fetishes, voyeurism and exhibitionism are common paraphilic disorders. “It’s not uncommon for people with paraphilic disorder to be compulsive in regards to their behavior,” Berrill said. “It’s not a one-shot deal — the activity is very reinforcing and very exciting. That is something the individual struggles with, weighing the pleasures of the behavior with the downside of being exposed.” Dr. Berrill said that in light of his repeated indiscretions and the risks to his and his wife’s political career as Hillary Clinton’s top aide, his “obsession is rather pronounced and the compulsivity outweighs his ability to

control his behavior.” It’s important to keep in mind, Berrill said, that Weiner has not broken the law, but because of the sexual nature of his indiscretions, he is a target for public embarrassment. Whereas if it were a “DUI or a substance abuse addiction, people might find it more relatable and forgivable.” The fact that Abedin did not give up on Weiner was the sign of a good partnership and not a bad one, Berrill said. It indicates commitment on the part of both partners to work on the problem and maintain a supportive environment. The stakes are particularly high for Abedin now as she toils away in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, which cannot risk humiliating surprises that could be exploited by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Yet there does come a time in the relationship when the partner feels like enough is enough. “They traveled as far as they can travel with this thing, and the risks are too great to bear,” Berrill said.

Eric Phillips tweeted a photo of New York’s first family when they were at Fenway Park watching a Boston Red Sox game. The soft-spoken teen, who is entering his second year at Yale, sported

A self-proclaimed actress who unleashed bugs on a crowded D train last week, later saying it was all a prank, could face reckless endangerment charges, according to a published report. Zaida Pugh, 21, apologized the day after she boarded an evening rush-hour D train dressed as a homeless woman, pretending to sell crickets and worms. The stunt was reportedly a viral video to expose the plight of homeless people. Teens who knock the bugs out of her hands, sending them flying all over the train car, were allegedly part of the act on Aug. 25. “The point of the video was to show how people react to homeless people, how people look down at them. It was also to show how people are

so fixated on recording stuff, instead of helping other people. Even before I posted the video, people had their own videos up,” Pugh told Gothamist. A panicked straphanger pulled the emergency brake, stranding the train without air conditioning on the Manhattan Bridge for about 30 minutes. Pugh, who has

performed similar video stunts over the last four years, also said she peed herself as part of the act. When the train pulled into the DeKalb Avenue station, Pugh was taken to Methodist Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, DNAinfo reported. According to the website, police, who over the weekend were exploring charging her, are now specifically looking into slapping her with reckless endangerment charges. At least one of her friends who participated in the prank could also face charges. “You can’t yell ‘fire’ in crowded theaters, and you can’t pull stunts that cause harm to people and stop subways and inconvenience thousands of people,” a law enforcement official told DNAinfo. Rudy Giuliani: I’ve saved more black lives than Beyoncé

A woman standing on the side of the BrooklynQueens Expressway was killed early Monday morning when a crash involving a drunk driver caused her to fall off the elevated roadway, police said. Vladimir Menin, 43 of Fort Lee, New Jersey, is now facing a slew of charges, including manslaughter and DWI, in the deadly fender-bender. He was also driving without a valid license, police said. The victim, identified by police as 49-year-old Aissatou Diallo of Staten Island, was on the shoulder of the expressway just before 3 a.m. because of a flat tire, according

to police. She had exited her Chevy when a Toyota Rav4 pulled in front of her to help. While several of those vehicles’ occupants were standing on the side of the road, a BMW traveling westbound struck the Chevy from behind, which then struck Diallo, police said. She was then thrown over the barrier and landed on the roadway below — Meeker Avenue. The BMW continued going forward, hitting the Toyota before stopping. Diallo was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Eight occupants from the Toyota and Chevy vehicles were also transported to Elmhurst for evaluation. Menin, who was driving the BMW, was taken to Woodhull Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was later arrested on charges of manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, DWI, reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

BRIEF Truck carrying Takata air bag materials explodes in Texas, killing one A truck transporting Takata Corp air bag propellant material at the center of a global recall crashed and exploded in Texas last week, killing one woman and injuring four other people, the auto parts supplier said on Monday. Takata said the truck, operated by a subcontractor, was traveling from a Takata plant in

Moses Lake, Washington, to a Takata warehouse in Eagle Pass, Texas, early on Aug. 22 when an accident occurred. The driver of the tractortrailer “failed to negotiateâ€? a curve on a highway and crashed near a house, according to a preliminary statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety. â€œThe trailer [carrying air bag detonators and blasting agent] exploded and engulfed in

ames, causing ďŹ re to the home and a passing vehicle.â€? The DPS said 67-year-old Lucila Robles was killed. Local media reports said she was inside the house near where the explosion took place. The agency said the house caught ďŹ re after the accident. The DPS was investigating the incident, the statement said. A Takata spokesman in the United States said the company had reported the incident to

U.S. safety regulators and was cooperating with the National Highway TraďŹƒc Safety Administration. The spokesman said on Monday the propellant in the truck contained ammonium nitrate, a volatile chemical compound. Takata air bags containing ammonium nitrate have in the past exploded and been linked to the deaths of at least 14 people, triggering the biggest recall in the global auto industry. REUTERS

Mylan NV said it would launch the first generic version of its allergy auto-injector EpiPen for $300, half the price of the branded product, the drugmaker’s second step in less than a week to counter the backlash over the product’s steep price. Mylan said on Monday it expected to launch the generic product “in several weeks, an unusual move considering the branded best seller is still patent protected and major rival treatments have failed to get regulatory clearances. “Our decision to launch a generic alternative to EpiPen is an extraordinary commercial response, Chief Executive Heather Bresch said Monday. “We determined that bypassing the brand system in this case and offering an additional alternative was the best option. Mylan’s price move

failed to squelch criticism of the company’s huge price increase for EpiPen since it acquired the product in 2007. The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform sent a letter to Mylan’s CEO on Monday seeking documents on EpiPen pricing, including those relating to revenue from EpiPen sales since 2007, manufacturing costs, and the amount of money the company receives from federal government health care programs. And former Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders tweeted on Monday, “At $300 generic EpiPens will still cost three times more than they did in 2007. This isn’t a discount. It’s a PR move.â€? Consumer watchdog group Public Citizen said Mylan’s latest move was another “convoluted mechanism to avoid plain talk.â€? It said activists on Tuesday will deliver petitions from more than 600,000 consumers and allergy sufferers to Mylan’s headquarters in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, demanding further price cuts. “We would like the company to drop the price to $100 for two EpiPens,â€? said Public Citizen spokeswoman Angela Bradbery, adding that was about the price charged in France. She said the petitions were gathered by it and various other consumer groups, including Consumers Union. REUTERS

FBI detects breaches against two states’ voter systems The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Monday that investigators were also seeking evidence of whether other states may have been targeted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has found breaches in Illinois and Arizona’s voter registration databases and is urging states to increase computer security ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election, according to a U.S. official familiar with the probe. The FBI warning in an Aug. 18 flash alert from the agency’s Cyber Division did not identify

the intruders or the two states targeted. Reuters obtained a copy of the document after Yahoo News first reported the story Monday. Accessing information in a voter database, much of which is publicly accessible, does not necessarily suggest an effort to manipulate the votes themselves. When registering, voters typically provide their names, home addresses, driver’s license or identification numbers, and party affiliations. But U.S. intelligence officials have become increasingly worried that hackers sponsored by Russia or other countries may attempt to disrupt the presidential election. Officials and cyber security experts say recent breaches at the Demo-

cratic National Committee and elsewhere in the Democratic Party were likely carried out by people within the Russian government. Kremlin officials have denied that. An FBI spokeswoman would not comment on the alerts but said the agency “routinely advises” on “various cyber threat indicators observed during the course of our investigations.” The intrusions come amid repeated unsubstantiated claims by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that the U.S. election system is “rigged.” Trump has cited emails leaked from the DNC that indicated the party leadership favored Hillary Clinton over rival candidate Bernie Sanders as reason to cast doubt on the electoral process in general. BRIEF Colorado’s anti-fracking measures fail to qualify for ballot Environmental groups have failed to gather enough signatures to put two measures on Colorado’s ballot in November that aim to curb fracking and oil and gas work, the state said on Monday. The ballot initiatives would have transferred regulatory control of oil and gas development to local governments and created more stringent setback requirements to keep new oil and gas facilities further away from occupied structures. Proponents gathered more than 98,492 signatures required to make the ballot, the state said, but failed to gather enough to offset the number that would possibly be rejected during a random sample that examines the validity of the signatures. Proponents of the measures have 30 days to appeal the decision. Earlier this year, the state’s Supreme Court struck down local fracking bans approved in the cities of Fort Collins and Longmont. Oil companies in Colorado, one of the top oil and gas producing states, had spent several million dollars trying to derail the campaign. REUTERS

Fox News calls anchor an ‘opportunist’ over her harassment claim Fox, in a filing in New York state court in Manhattan, also said Tantaros signed an agreement to keep employmentrelated disputes out of court and asked a judge to send her Aug. 22 lawsuit to arbitration. Fox News Network LLC on Monday said anchor Andrea Tantaros was an “opportunist” who made sexual harassment claims against former chairman Roger Ailes only after she was taken off the air for writing a book without permission. Tantaros in her lawsuit says she was taken off

the air in April in retaliation for rebuffing Ailes’ advances and complaining to top officials at Fox News, a unit of TwentyFirst Century Fox Inc. The network on Monday denied the claims, saying Tantaros was taking advantage of the publicity surrounding a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Ailes in July by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson that led to the chairman’s resignation. “Tantaros’s [lawsuit] bears all the hallmarks of the ‘wannabe,’” the network’s lawyers wrote in the filing. Fox says Tantaros lost her on-air spot because she wrote a book, “Tied Up in Knots: How Getting What We Wanted Made Women Miserable,” and promoted it on the chan-

nel without authorization. The book was released on April 26 by HarperCollins. A lawyer for Tantaros did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tantaros in the lawsuit says Ailes, beginning in 2011, made numerous comments about her appearance and asked her to “twirl” for him. She said senior executive William Shine, who was promoted to co-president when Ailes resigned, and the company’s top in-house lawyer dismissed complaints about Ailes. Carlson’s lawsuit against Ailes makes similar harassment allegations, but unlike Tantaros she did not claim she was silenced by other Fox executives and did not sue the company. Carlson’s

lawsuit prompted Fox to hire a prominent New York law firm to conduct an internal investigation. On Monday, Fox News said Tantaros initially avoided speaking with investigators and eventually told them she could not recall any specific sexually-charged statements by Ailes. Separately, lawyers for Ailes have said they plan to move to have Carlson’s lawsuit in federal court in New Jersey sent to arbitration as well. REUTERS

Almost one in three fatalities involved drunk drivers or speeding. GETTY IMAGES

Last year 35,092 people died in traffic crashes in the United States, a 7.2 percent year-on-year increase that runs counter to a five-decade trend of declining fatalities, the U.S. Transportation Department said. U.S. officials said lower gasoline prices combined with job growth increased the

number of miles driven last year by the highest rate in nearly 25 years. Distracted driving was cited in about a tenth of traffic fatalities in 2015, the U.S. DOT said. Data “showed traffic deaths rising across nearly every segment of the population,” the department said in a statement. The number of fatalities was near preliminary estimates issued nearly two months ago. The last time U.S. traffic fatalities rose at a greater rate was in 1966, when they went up 8.1 percent. That was two years before the federal government

required seat belts in cars. While the number of fatalities rose in 2015, driving is far safer now in the United States than it was in the past. In 1966, the fatality rate — measured as deaths per miles driven — was five times higher than today. In that year, nearly 51,000 people were killed on U.S. roads. Almost half of passenger vehicle occupants killed last year were not wearing safety belts, although the belts are standard equipment in all cars and required to be worn in some U.S. states, the DOT said. Facebook Inc. will not become a media company, its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday, telling students the firm would remain a technology platform. An increasing number of users are turning to social media networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, to find their news, but Zuckerberg said his firm had no ambitions to become a content provider. “No, we are a tech company, not a media company,” said Zuckerberg, after a young Italian asked him whether Facebook intended to become a news editor. While acknowledging the role Facebook has in supplying users with news through their connections and stressing the advantages of obtaining information from different parts of the world, Zuckerberg said Facebook was “a technology company, we build the tools, we do not produce any content.” “The world needs news companies, but also technology platforms, like what we do,

and we take our role in this very seriously,” he said, speaking from Rome’s Luiss university. Earlier on Monday, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan had a private audience with Pope Francis. It was the latest in a string of meetings the pontiff has held with Silicon Valley leaders, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Alphabet’s boss Eric Schmidt. Zuckerberg said he gave the Argentine pontiff a model of Aquila, Facebook’s lightweight solar-powered drone

vate-prison operators fell Monday after the news. Advocates for immigrants have accused the companies of withholding proper mental health and medical care from detainees to boost profits. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of DHS, uses detention facilities run by Corrections Corp. of America and GEO Group. Corrections Corp. of America’s stock slid 9.4 percent and GEO Group’s stock fell 6 percent immediately after news of the review. Both stocks were rebounding later in the afternoon. Corrections Corp. of America has earned $689 million from ICE contracts since 2008, 12 percent of its revenue from state and federal contracts over that time, according to the website SmartProcure, which tracks government contracts. The company man-

ages a facility for Central American women and children in Dilley, Texas. GEO Group runs a similar facility in Karnes City, Texas, and has earned $1.18 billion from contracts with ICE since 2008, about 35 percent of its total revenue from government contracts, according SmartProcure data. GEO Group said in a statement, “GEO’s facilities under contract with ICE are highly rated and provide high-quality, cost-effective services in safe, secure, and humane residential environments pursuant to strict contractual requirements and the federal government’s national standards,” the statement said. Corrections Corp. of America spokesman Steve Owen said, “We’re proud of the quality and value of the services we provide and look forward to sharing that information.”

Immigration advocates and members of Congress have ramped up pressure on DHS to end its contracts with the private prison companies since the Justice Department announced Aug. 18 it would do so. That was prompted by an inspector general’s report that criticized the safety and effectiveness of private prisons. “Rather than wait for a review and a report from a committee, the president should ensure that the phase-out of private prisons ... is extended to DHS operations immediately,” said Greg Chen, advocacy director at the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Democratic presidential candidate, and Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona asked DHS in a letter last week to end the practice.

n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece. First released to the public in 1969, the watch turned the entire industry on its head, ushering in a new era of timekeeping. It’s this legacy that we’re honoring with the Timemaster Watch, available only through Stauer at a price only we can offer. Prior to Piezo watches, gravity-driven Swiss watches were the standard bearer of precision timekeeping. But all that changed when the first commercially available Piezo watch came onto the market. The result of ten years of research and development by some of the world’s top engineers, they discovered that when you squeeze a certain type of crystal, it generates a tiny electric current. And, if you pass electricity through the crystal, it vibrates at a precise frequency– exactly 32,768 times each second. When it came on the market, the Piezo watch was the most dependable timepiece available, accurate to 0.2 seconds per day. Today, it’s still considered a spectacular advance in electrical engineering. “It was like a magnum bullet shot at the most sensitive spot of the mechanical watch industry... Switzerland was terrified.” Ariel Adams of A Blog to Watch. With the Timemaster we’ve set one of the world’s most important mechanical advances inside a decidedly masculine case. A handsome prodigy in rich leather and gold-finished stainless steel. The simplicity of the watch’s case belies an ornately detailed dial, which reflects the prestige of this timepiece. Call today to secure your own marvel of timekeeping history. Because we work directly with our own craftsman we’re able to offer the Timemaster at a fraction of the price that many Piezo watches cost. But a watch like this doesn’t come along every day. Call today before time runs out and they’re gone. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Spend some time with this engineering masterpiece risk-free for two months. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, simply send it back within 60 days for a refund of the sale price (less S&P). But we’re betting this timekeeping pioneer is a keeper.

Justin Bieber reactivates Instagram for a hot second

Taylor Swift had jury duty, OK??

Potential jurors for a Tennessee court were surprised by Swift’s presence while awaiting selection for a criminal case Monday morning. A fellow juror named Tracy Bates (@TracysActivism) photographed

and tweeted Swift’s attendance. The “New Romantics” singer, who is a Nashville resident, was happy to take selfies, sign autographs and chat with the pool of 29 while awaiting their voir dire. In a video posted by Bates, Swift listens intently as someone tells her that she always Snapchats her kids singing “Shake It Off,” but incidentally didn’t today — OF ALL DAYS. Perhaps

ter celebrated with a #JustinReactivatedParty. Following his brief hiatus, the “Sorry” singer posted a bunch of adorable videos of his new adorable

puppy, Todd. But apparently fans spoke too soon because moments after reactivating, Biebs tweeted, “Still no Instagram it was an accident.” Current status? “Sorry, this page isn’t available.” The pop star toyed with the hearts of many Beliebers and deactivated once again. False alarm, everybody.

Mariah Carey’s sister arrested on prostitution charges Mariah Carey is one of the best-selling female artists of all time. She leads a glamorous life full of red carpet events and multiplatinum hits, and soon she’ll be married to a billionaire. But the pop superstar’s family life is far from perfect. Over the weekend, her estranged older sister, Alison Carey, was arrested for

prostitution in Saugerties, N.Y. According to US Weekly, Alison was working out of a local hotel for a week, using online ads to attract customers. The Daily Freeman reported one of the ads even referenced lyrics to Mariah’s hit song, “Fantasy.” When she was arrested, Alison identi-

fied herself as Mariah’s sister, but the two have been estranged. Earlier this year, Alison, who is also HIVpositive, begged Mariah for help in a video plea released by The Daily Mail: “Mariah I love you, and I desperately need your help, please don’t abandon me like this.” What would you do if you were Mariah?

Rebecca Taylor designs your weekend wardrobe Your go-to label for pretty dresses and flirty camis gets casual.

If someone could buy just one piece from La Vie, which one would you suggest? I love the Anais patch jeans. It has a little bit of a fashion edge to it, but not so much that you feel like you’re wearing your teenage daughter’s jeans.

TINA CHADHA @TinaatMetro

tina.chadha@metro.us

Rebecca Taylor knows you want to live in your jeans. The designer, whose dreamy feminine dresses and delicate floral-print tops have been your go-tos for date nights, parties and job interviews for almost 20 years, now wants to inspire your offduty looks, as well. This month, Taylor launched La Vie, a collection of casual, more accessible, wardrobe staples. “It’s much more personal to me, this collection,” explains the designer. “I wanted to do something that felt more like what myself and my friends wear on the weekends.” For the busy mother of three, downtime is spent in breezy striped sweaters,

slouchy cargo pants, cotton Victorian blouses and effortless vintage-inspired jeans. After years of “trolling through thrift stores and putting up with wearing my skinny skinny skinny jeans,” Taylor decided to craft her perfect pair. “I love a high-waist jean that feels relaxed in the leg,” she says of her new Beatrice and Anais styles. “It’s comfortable, and when I sit down I’m not losing the back of it.” That same ease-meetsladylike sensibility carries through the rest of the

relaxed collection. Standouts include a crisp poplin dress with sweet eyeletlace trim, polished voile tops with ruffle collars and soft boucle pullovers. The best part: The prices are more laid-back than the main line, too. T-shirts start at $95, and a chambray jacket goes for $325. We chatted with the Brooklyn-based designer about her obsession with Victorian blouses (she’s been collecting them since she was a teen) and the one La Vie item we need stat.

La Vie Anais jeans $235, REBECCATAYLOR.COM

What is it about the Victorian silhouette you love so much? I’ve always loved Victorian blouses. I’m from New Zealand and there wasn’t a lot of fashion being imported from overseas. So if you wanted to have a unique style you had to go into vintage and flea markets and put it together. And there’s a lot of Victorian vintage out there for some reason. So that’s where my love of crisp white cottons and eyelets began. I’m

MUSIC

Korn seeks out clarity on ‘Serenity’ While on tour with Rob Zombie, the nu metal band discusses their October release. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Korn’s drummer, Ray Luzier, has a side gig: He’s an internationally sought-after percussion instructor, who has some pretty good advice for aspiring musicians: “Go to law school,” he laughs. On the brink of Korn’s 12th studio release (“Serenity of Suffering,” due Oct. 21), the Cali-bred band has just boomeranged their sound from West Coast nu metal to pseudo-dubstep and back again. Luzier knows the fickle favoritism of success and the amount of sheer luck that goes into making it big, noting even classical training won’t guarantee you a spot in the limelight. “These days the music business takes such wacky turns you need to sacrifice your life and family and take it on 110 percent,” he says from Toronto. “If you want to do it, you really have to commit. And even if you’re the top of your class, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get a job. And that’s really, really scary.” Luzier chats about the band’s upcoming album, their tour with Rob Zombie and what it’s like seeing two generations of Korn fans. Can we talk about the video for “Insane,” which just came out this week. Have you read any of the press about it? David Lee Roth told me to never read your own press — and never read the comments. Anyone can make up a fake name and go online and attack anyone they want to. I’ve looked in vain [this time], but it’s been mostly positive from what I’ve skimmed through. The thing I see the most is “Korn is back,” which is funny to me because we

never went anywhere. How does it feel being a band that’s been around long enough to “come back”? There’s no quota or touring cycle, we just go, go, go, and if it’s affecting people in a way that makes them say we have our old sound back, we’ll take it. A lot of [this new album’s sound] has to do with [Grammywinning producer] Nick Raskulinecz. He’s one of my favorite producers, and whenever I pick up an album I love, I see it’s produced by him. He makes a band feel the way they’re supposed to feel, and sound the way they’re meant to sound. With “Serenity of Suffering” being your 12th release — how are you able to par down your set lists on this tour? It’s really hard. Munky [James Shaffer] is really good at trying to balance it out. It’s one of those things where you can’t go a night without playing “Freak on a Leash,” or people will throw tomatoes at you. Then the old-school fans want to hear the obscure stuff. It’s a lot. I think Korn has over 145 songs in our catalog. Going back to Nick, what do you think was different in the way that you worked together that will show up on this album? It’s a paradigm shift. He has a totally different perspective on things. Being the type of band we are, we’ll just write and write and write, so it’s really important for us to have a producer who comes in and goes, “Hey, this isn’t as good as you thought” or “This is better than you think it is.” Nick had a lot to do with getting our sound down. We started in June of [2015] and were up to 35 [recorded] tunes, and Nick whittled it down. We ended up recording 16 songs with him, for the album and other projects.

The band’s upcoming release, “Serenity of Suffering,” will be their 12th.

Catching a workout Our health editor takes a surf-inspired workout class to see if she can hang ten. KATE MOONEY @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Though I am a lover of the ocean, I’ve never surfed before. That’s partly because I haven’t had access — while plenty of folks surf in the city, you kind of have to seek it out — and partly because it feels a little daunting. But when Good Thins, Nabisco’s new line of healthy chips, invited me to attend a class at Surfset NYC, a surf-inspired workout not too far out of my daily commute, it seemed too good to pass up. Fun fact: Surfset Fitness was originally founded by entrepreneur Mike Hartwick and nutri-

tion expert Sarah Ponn, and received funding in 2012 from “Shark Tank.” When I first arrived at the studio, trainer and co-owner Diana Garrett, who was leading my class that night, explained that the 45-minute workout, which combines actual surf moves with yoga, cardio and strengthbuilding circuit training, is done aboard the RipSurfer X, a 6-foot-long surf training board that sits on top of three balance balls to simulate the wobble you would experience in the water. “The instability adds an extra challenge and also magnifies any misalignments,” Garrett says. Serena Williams will be back on the US Open court tonight. GETTY IMAGES

Serena again chasing history in NY Serena Williams will take on Ekaterina Makarova on Tuesday night. ADAM ZAGORIA @MetroNewYork sports@metro.us

Serena Williams insists she didn’t have any flashback nightmares when she first stepped on the grounds of the U.S. Open this year. “I always feel really happy walking out at any Grand Slam,” she said. “I feel so many wonderful memories and moments. I feel really good about it. Same with coming here to New York. It’s always a good feeling.” A year ago, it wasn’t all good feelings for Serena after she was stunned

in the semifinals by Italian Roberta Vinci, bringing a shocking halt to Serena’s bid to become the first person since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win the calendar year Grand Slam. Vinci — who went on to lose in the final to fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta — entered last year’s tournament facing odds of 300-1 to win it. Serena had been 43-1 against unseeded opponents at the Open in her career. One year after that Buster Douglas-like upset, Vinci on Monday won her first-round match in Arthur Ashe Stadium over Anna-Lena Friedsam, 6-2, 6-4. “It’s tough to repeat of course the results of last year,” Vinci said. “But I’m No. 7, so of

course I have a lot of pressure. They expect me semifinal, quarterfinal, step by step and match by match.” Serena, the top seed and world No. 1, is set to take the Ashe Stadium court under the lights on Tuesday night against Russian Ekaterina Makarova, against whom Williams is 4-1, including a victory in the 2014 semifinals. “That’s going to be a test for Serena,” tennis great turned ESPN analyst Chris Evert said. “She’s just a dangerous first-round player so that’s interesting.” Once again, Williams will be chasing history in Flushing Meadows. No, she’s not on pace for a Grand Slam, but she can win her 23rd

major title in the Open Era, which would surpass Graf’s 22. Margaret Court holds the all-time women’s record with 24 major titles. “More importantly, she’s playing for breaking my record of six U.S. Opens,” joked Evert, referring to Serena shooting for a seventh U.S. Open title. “Not the same pressure she faced last year, but there will be a little bit of pressure.” “I think I am just more relaxed [than last year] for sure,” Williams said. Williams comes into the Open bothered by a shoulder ailment and having not played much tennis this summer. She said her shoulder first began to bother her the day after she won the

Wimbledon final against Angelique Kerber, the German who is seeded No. 2 here and won her first-round match over Polona Hercog of Slovenia via retirement, 6-0, 1-0. After Wimbledon, Williams was stunned in the Round of 16 at the Olympics by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, and then skipped the event in Cincinnati because of her shoulder. “I have not played a lot, I haven’t practiced a lot, but I’m just now starting to feel a little better,” Williams said. “Hopefully just every day I will keep going higher.” Looking ahead, Williams could face No. 5 Simona Halep in the quarterfinals; No. 6 Venus Williams (whom

Serena beat in the quarterfinals in 2015) or No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska in the semis; and No. 2 Kerber, No. 8 Madison Keys (the top American woman not named Williams) or even Vinci in the final. As is always the case with Serena in New York, more history will be on the line. “The U.S. Open is obviously a special place,” she said. “I think usually I prefer to play more coming into the final Grand Slam of the year, but there is nothing we can do about it. You just have to make the best of every single opportunity. That’s all I can do now.” Follow Adam Zagoria on Twitter @AdamZagoria for updates throughout the U.S. Open.

Why Knee And Hip Arthritis Pain Sufferers Are Flocking To This Manhattan Medical Clinic To Relieve Pain And Avoid Joint Replacement Surgery

Knee Arthritis Pain Breakthrough? Real Doctor’s Advice On The Most Advanced Medical Treatments For Knee Arthritis Pain “The Knee Arthritis Treatment Everyone Is Talking About...” By Matt Edgar America’s Heath Writer NYC - Modern medicine has come a long way. The success stories and lives saved are endless. A n d n o w, t h r o u g h advanced technology and science - skilled medical doctors are helping more knee and hip arthritis pain sufferers than ever before. In just a moment, I’m going to reveal some of these incredible arthritis pain techniques... So you can possibly relive some or all of your pain... Just like thousands of others already have. I bet many of these former arthritis pain sufferers were just like you. But first, I have to tell you about this - it’s very important information so you can make the very best decision about relieving your arthritis pain. It will also help you avoid costly and painful mistakes. Ready for some great arthritis pain relief information? Ok, here we go...

27 New York Tuesday, August 30, 2016

The Two Arthritis Treatment Paths... The first thing to understand, is that there are basically two treatment paths you can choose to go down when you are looking for relief to knee or hip arthritis pain. One path is nonsurgical. You do not want surgery (who does!) so you do everything you can to avoid it. You take pain pills, do physical therapy and exercises and maybe you even changed you diet. Nothing worked. The pain progressively got worse until you couldn’t stand it anymore. Because you did not get the proper treatment - your joints decayed past the point of no return. Now they are basically “bone on bone” and the doctor told you there is no other option. You need... The Dreaded... joint replacement surgery. I will admit - some people do need joint replacement surgery. This procedure has come a very long way in recent years. For some, at a certain point, this is the way to go. But - and this is a very big but... even though this procedure has improved dramatically... it is not without risk.

In fact, a $500 million verdict in a lawsuit was just awarded to patients who received faulty hip implants during hip replacement surgery. Some of the damage being reported from the faulty hip replacements sounds horrific. There is no doubt, joint

The medical procedure I am speaking about is called... viscosupplementation. During this procedure a FDA approved gel-like medicine is placed directly into the joint space. This allows the joint to glide freely and move much better again.

So, there are some people that will not get results with this treatment. Reason #2 To a s s u r e t h e b e s t possible results, this treatment requires expensive advanced technology and a skilled medical doctor with experience doing this

Why Is This Treatment In Such High Demand?

“Precision Arthritis Targeting” Technology There are many big medical clinics in NYC. In fact, New York offers some of the best medical care in the world. With so many great options - why are knee arthritis sufferers flocking to NY Pain Relief MD? There are several reasons. The first is what we can “Precision Targeted Knee Pain Technology.” Here’s what that means and why it is so important to you. This treatment places a medical lubricating and cushioning gel directly into the arthritic knee joint. This helps the knee glide more

smoothly decreasing or eliminating pain. Precision Arthritis Targeted Technology Or PATT means that we use extremely advanced digital imaging to make sure this lubricating gel is placed precisely where it is supposed to go. This means treatments have the best chance for success. Doing this procedure without this advanced technology often leads to misplaced lubricating gel and failure. Another secret to success is using multiple treatments to maximize pain relief and healing. NY Pain MD uses multiple brands of lubricating gels and also

offers stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma (PRP). PRP is being used by top professional athletes in an attempt to heal injuries faster. The combination of these treatments can often get incredible results when other treatments have failed. While many clinics only offer one of these treatments - NY Pain Relief Md offers them all under one roof for maximum results and convenience. And just as important is the experience of NY Pain MD Relief doctors. NY Pain Relief MD doctors are experts at this procedure and have successfully done thousands.

replacement surgery should be your last resort. But too many people think they need joint replacement surgery when you do not. In fact, many respond extremely well to a medical treatment approach that is finally becoming much more popular. This is... Treatment Path #2 This treatment path is non-surgical but it probably NOT what you are thinking. It is NOT pain pills and grueling exercises. We think it is... Much better It is a treatment that actually puts vital lubricating gel directly into your arthritic knee or hip joint. This is extremely important because when you have arthritis, you lose lubricating fluid in your joints. In other words, your joints basically “dry up.” This causes joint surfaces to rub together causing all kinds of problems including brutal PAIN. As time goes on - the joint wears out more and more and the pain can be excruciating.

T h i s d e c re a s e s t h e abnormal rubbing and wear and tear and, in many cases, decreases or even eliminates pain. Sounds Great Right? It does. But... viscosupplementation has not worked for many people.

procedure. For this treatment to have the best chance to work, the lubricating gel must be placed precisely into the joint space. Thats why “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology"or PAT T i s a l w a y s u s e d . PAT T u s e s a s p e c i a l medical camera and fluorosocpic imaging to guide the procedure and make sure the gel-like medicine gets exactly where you need it. Many doctors doing this procedure do not use this advanced digital imaging and do these procedure either under ultrasound or “blind.” No Difference? They say there is no difference - but research shows that doctors doing joint injections without being guided by the proper imaging completely miss the joint space about one third of the time. And because treatments are so precise - most patients report they are also painless. Now that you know the facts - would you choose a doctor who uses advanced digital imaging to guide the treatment - or one who injects you blind? Can you see why this treatment has not worked for so many? And can you see why, with the Precision A r t h r i t i s Ta r g e t i n g Technology and a doctor who has already done thousands of these procedures - it could work for you? That’s why so many knee and hip arthritis

There are two very i m p o r t a n t re a s o n s why: If you have knee or hip arthritis pain and want to relieve your pain without surgery - or if you have already tried viscosupplementation without good results - what you are about to discover will be extremely important... The first reason some people did not get good results with viscosupplementation is... bluntly... this is a real medical procedure done by real medical doctors. This is NOT a “wonder cure” sold by slick marketers. In the real world of medicine and science, no treatments work 100% of the time or on everyone. And no good and ethical doctor would make such a claim or guarantee any results what-so-ever.

sufferers are flocking to a medical clinic in NYC called “NY Pain Relief MD” that focusses on helping patients relieve their knee and hip arthritis pain and get back to doing all the things they want to do - like playing golf, walking without pain, tennis and many others. But one of the biggest successes is when patients who were told they needed joint replacement surgery cancel the surgery because they feel so much better. They get such great results because they use advanced digital imaging ( PAT T ) t o g u i d e t h e i r treatments, their doctors are specially trained and have performed THOUSANDS of treatments and they use multiple brands of lubricating gels (many doctors only use one they have a “relationship” with). But that’s not all - for difficult cases, they also add advanced PRP and Stem cell treatments with often wonderful results. Every patient is unique and they have a very unique treatment plan for every single patient so you can get the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. Here’s How To Find Out If We Can Help You If you have knee or hip arthritis pain and would like to find out if the treatments at NY Pain MD can help you - you can come in for a riskfree no-obligation screening.. During this screening you will get a chance to ask questions and find out if you are a candidate for these advanced medical treatments - and what your best options are. The screening is completely free with no further obligation. After your screening, you will breath a big sigh or relief knowing what your options are and the best way to deal with your pain. If you are not sure - I know exactly how you feel. Arthritis pain is brutal. And it is hard to get straight answers. So many patients felt the same way. They told us they they had given up until they read some information just like this and they came in to see us. Then their life changed so fast - it was incredible Give us a call right now a t 8 5 5 - 4 5 6 - PA I N a n d schedule your free screening. The worst thing that can happened is you find out this treatment is not for you. But what if we really can help you? What if we really can get rid of some of all your pain? What would that be worth you you? If it is worth a couple hours of your time - give us a call. NY Pain Relief MD 65 Broadway Suite 1004 New York, N.Y. 800-227-KNEE (5633) (Med Director: G Craig)

Not so fast: McCann still in Yankees’ fold It might be good for the Yankees to keep Brian McCann in New York. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

Gary Sanchez has supplanted Brian McCann as the Yankees’ everyday catcher much sooner than anyone could have anticipated. Sanchez hit 11 home runs in his first 23 games; the quickest a batter has ever reached that milestone. He’s also thrown out six runners attempting to steal while letting just three get by, so Sanchez has been a valuable defensive asset as well. All of this has led to speculation that McCann’s tenure with the Bombers might come to a premature end, and his second-half slump has done nothing to dispel those rumors. But the Yankees cutting ties with McCann any time soon is a far-fetched scenario. McCann is still an integral member of the Yankees. Brian Cashman said so himself in a recent interview with the New York Post. â€œ[McCann and Sanchez] are our best two catchers by far, and our

best team has both on the field,â€? Cashman said. “We have two catchers who hit from the opposite side, and that has a lot of value for us. I would venture to guess that Sanchez/McCann would be the top catcher tandem in the game. McCann has struggled in the second half, but he was a borderline All-Star this year. So as far as I am concerned, he has a lot of value to us, let alone anyone else. Cashman said that mainly to fend off reporters linking McCann in a trade to the Atlanta Braves, who were thought to be interested in a reunion with their former backstop after he cleared waivers. As Cashman alluded to, McCann’s value lies mainly in his left-handedness. With Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira all out of the picture in 2017, there’s suddenly a dearth of left-handed power bats on the Yankees’ roster. Greg Bird could return at first base, but it remains to be seen how his shoulder surgery will affect his home run-hitting ability. Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin, whom the Bombers called up earlier this year, are both righties. And Clint

Frazier, who’s due for a call-up from TripleA, is also right-handed.  With the sudden influx of young talent, having a veteran like McCann in the clubhouse for leadership purposes wouldn’t hurt. McCann has been the DH for most of August, but he could see more playing time at first base in the days ahead and in 2017. Girardi has already asked the 32-yearold catcher to take more grounders at first base to “give us options,â€? but Girardi was noncommittal when asked about McCann potentially being the primary man at first base. “That’s probably a discussion to have over the winter,â€? Girardi told NJ.com. “That’s not something we’ve talked about. I’m focused on this year. Next year is a long way away.â€? Assuming the Yankees choose Sanchez and McCann as their two catchers for next year, that puts Austin Romine in a tricky spot. He’ll have no more options after this year, meaning he’ll be subject to the waiver system should the Yankees demote him. That will likely force Cashman to deal Romine in the offseason.
