DEATH TOLL RISES IN TALIBAN ATTACK IN AFGHAN CAPITAL KABUL

1

A Taliban suicide attack near the defence ministry in Kabul killed at least 24 people on Monday, including a number of senior security officials, and wounded 91 others, officials said. Two blasts in quick succession hit a crowded area of the city near government buildings, a market and a main intersection, defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanesh said. Troops, police and civilians rushing to help victims of the first explosion were caught in the second, triggered when a suicide bomber blew himself up. The casualty total may increase as more information becomes available, said Mohammad Ismail Kawousi, a spokesman for the public health ministry. REUTERS

BREXIT MINISTER: BRITAIN WILL REGAIN SOVEREIGNTY WITHOUT DELAY

2

Britain will leave the European Union and restore its sovereignty, the minister responsible for negotiating Britain’s exit from the European Union said on Monday, vowing there would be no delay and no second referendum. “As the prime minister has made clear, there will be no attempt to stay in the EU by the back door,” David Davis told parliament. “No attempt to delay, frustrate or thwart the will of the British people. No attempt to engineer a second referendum because some people didn’t like the first answer.” Davis also said the government was firm that it wanted to have the “freest possible trading relationship” with the EU while controlling immigration into Britain. N. KOREA FIRES THREE MISSILES AS G20 LEADERS MEET IN CHINA

North Korea fired three ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday, South Korea’s military said, as the leaders of the Group of 20 major economies held a summit in China, the North’s main diplomatic ally. The missiles were fired from a region south of the capital Pyongyang just after noon local time and flew about 600 miles, hitting Japan’s air defense identification zone, the South’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. “We are still analyzing details but this is a grave threat to our nation’s security, and we express deep concern,” the Japan Defense Ministry said in a statement. HERMINE PLAYED WIFFLE STORM

Remember when you were a kid playing a game in your backyard called Wiffle ball? A hollow plastic ball with holes in it would flutter around in every which direction and, at times, you would swing three times — all misses — before the ball even moved across the plate to a “strike three!” count. Well, Hermine played Wiffle storm with all of us: meteorologists, computer models, governors. And as we all struck out — “Busted!” — you, the people (especially along the Jersey Shore) must want to kill the umpire “meteorologists,” and I can’t blame you. The finale weekend of summer, businesses took a big blow, and not from Hermine but in the cash register as families, who planned all summer for this weekend, changed their plans

because the umpires yelled, “You’re out!” It was a very challenging forecast and all the computer models for 72 hours consecutively put coastal residents all along the Jersey Shore in line for a life-threatening coastal battering. And it was the Labor Day weekend, meaning the beaches were going to be packed with families and their children. The way all the computer models were targeting the coast, we really had no choice but to issue the alarm bells, because if we didn’t it would have been simply irresponsible of us. We really did dodge a meteorological bullet, because if this storm would have reached its full potential, trust me the damage and cleanup would have been far more costly than the losses businesses took this weekend and most

likely fatalities would have taken place. As for Hermine’s future, the storm will continue to meander south of Long Island, causing moderate tidal flooding, dangerous surf and severe riptides, all the way up to the capes of southern New England. It’s extremely dangerous to venture into the waters through Wednesday, especially with lifeguards no longer on duty. Even you surfers should heed the warnings. The most intense rain bands will remain offshore, although rain will spill westward across eastern Long Island and the capes. As I write this, I’m in Montauk, Long Island,

New York Tuesday: Sun and clouds, windy, High 86 Wednesday: Heating up to a high of 91 Thursday: Hot and humid, High 95 Friday: Sunny and hot, High 92 Saturday: Sunny and hot, High 91 Sunday: Sunshine and cooler, High 84

watching the surf pound, beaches get chewed up and yellow tape posted everywhere along with “Beach Closed” signs. And that’s the end of summer, always a bit sad but especially on a day like today.

De Blasio: City will consider ‘all options’ in response to J’Ouvert street violence

Hordes of police could not deter deaths at J’Ouvert 2016. NYPD

The mayor did not rule out the possibility of canceling the pre-dawn event in the future. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

J’Ouvert might be going away. Mayor Bill de Blasio hinted at the possibility of canceling J’Ouvert at a news briefing following Monday’s deadly violence at the raucous 4 a.m. celebration that precedes the West Indian Day Parade. “All options are on the table,” de Blasio said in addressing questions about the future of J’Ouvert and if it might be canceled, reported

the New York Post. “I’m not going to go into detail until we do a full review.” “Just making a broad, strategic statement, all options are on the table,” de Blasio said. “We’re going to look at the whole situation with the NYPD and community.” The steel drums and puffs of flour could not obscure the gunshots that rang out before sunrise this Labor Day. People ran for their lives — except those wounded or killed in the mayhem: 17-year-old Tyreke Borel and 22-year-old Tiarah Poyau were fatally shot. Two elderly women survived gunshot wounds, and another woman said she had been stabbed. A 73-year-old woman, identified by the New York Post as Margaret Peters, was sit-

ting on a bench waiting for the festival to begin at 4 a.m. when she was shot Monday. “There is a hole in my hand — the bullet went right through,” she told the Post. “I wouldn’t be going back next year,” said Peters, who has attended the festivities since she emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago in 1972. In the days leading up to the festival, de

Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton vowed that this year’s J’Ouvert would be the safest ever. The police presence at the event was doubled. Additional lights were brought into the neighborhood and the event organizers were required to file for a permit. The intensified police presence and improved lighting failed to deter the trouble that has

plagued the event for the past few years. Monday’s events have stirred passionate responses from the community, some saying that J’Ouvert should be stopped, while others point to the aggressive police action as stirring resentment. “So sad. And so ridiculous given all the police state theatrics leading up to it,” wrote Barbara Ann Rogers in a Facebook

post in the Prospect Park Lefferts-Garden group. “Proof that their nonsense doesn’t help, only makes matters worse. Bad people are going to do bad things, regardless, and making the rest of us feel like we’re under occupation by a hostile force is just making more people resentful & depressed.” “I really wish people would stop acting like police are the problem, especially as bullets fly and bodies drop around them for no reason in particular,” posted Javier E. David in the same Facebook group. From the general public, many suggested putting an end to J’Ouvert altogether. “I hope they cancel J’Ouvert after this year for real...” tweeted Alyssa (@ChillOutAlyssa).

Bullying, teasing, physical assault, rape. Not all kids have the same experience in middle school and high school. When it’s namecalling and shoving on the playground, it’s easy to think “kids will be kids,” but suicide statistics paint a grim picture of kids growing up with adultsize problems. LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) youth are especially high-risk for depression and anxiety. According to the National Alliance for Mental Health, “mental health conditions that effect people when they are most vulnerable” too often leads to suicide. “When I say I was searching for myself, I was literally searching not only for me but for a reason to exist,” Alexis Plaza, a member of the LGBTQ community who is now a freshman at Rutgers University, said about her high school days. “I didn’t have a meaning at that time, so I thought I should drop off the face of the earth, and that led me to deep anxiety and depression.” Mythic Bridge, a nonprofit organization, uses film as a vehicle to reach LGBTQ teens, like Plaza. Formed in 2010, the organization conducts film workshops, such as the women’s workshop scheduled for Sept. 24 and 25, and in the process creates a safe space for atrisk youth. Film is the access point to begin a conversation, explained co-founder and Columbine survivor Donald J. Klein. Over a weekend, students, typically from ages 16 to 21, learn how to work in a group, write a script, build a set, work a camera — “from concept to creation.” “It’s the mentors’ job to keep the concept manageable,” Klein said while laughing. “We’re not blowing up New York City. There’s no Godzillas or anything like that in our films.” Gage Cass Woodle, cofounder and executive

director of Mythic Bridge, defines “at risk” as someone who is “at risk of screwing up their future.” At Mythic Bridge, “at risk” traverses socioeconomic class, age, race and creed. Knowing what it is like to be labeled a “lost cause,” Woodle said the program doesn’t focus on therapy — the therapy happens “accidentally.” “[Kids are] always looking for that next place they can be comfortable and exercise conveying a message that’s important to them,” Klein added. “There’s not a lot of programming out there that’s effective for that groups, especially the transgender demographic. They are really underserved.” With mentors, film professionals and often former Mythic Bridge participants, the organization works on technical skills and such things as resume building, interviewing, time management and teamwork. Plaza participated in eight Mythic Bridge workshops and is now a mentor. She said Mythic Bridge calls itself a community, but it is more like a family. “There was times when I wouldn’t participate, I would hide from being in the pictures,” Plaza said. “I would try to find ways to get away from everyone. Gage was the one who brought me out of that.” If film isn’t your passion, Woodle said, there is still a place for you. If you like to draw, set design might be your place at Mythic Bridge. If you like taking pictures, set photographer could be your role. “There’s thousands of roles in a production so there’s always going to be a place,” Woodle said. “We started off saying we do filmmaking workshops and it’s just grown so much beyond that,” Klein added. “We’ve had kids that were homeless that just graduated Brooklyn College, who are now in the studio system out in L.A., that we helped land a job. We’ve had kids nominated for Emmys. We have a kid who sold a short [film] to Comedy Central. “

Police rescue three from sinking boat near Staten Island Police rescued an unconscious woman and two men from their sinking vessel near the Verrazano Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Police said the 35-foot boat was taking on water at about 12:30 p.m. when they found the boaters — two men, aged 81 and 20, and an unconscious 68-year-old woman — off the rocky shoreline of

Hoffman Island, near Staten Island’s eastern shore. Officers from the NYPD Scuba Unit were lowered to the boat from a helicopter. After assessing the scene, the responders put the unconscious woman into a rescue basket which was hoisted up to the helicopter. Police said the boaters were trying to escape

their sinking vessel when they became trapped and injured. The younger man had managed to get to shore, but the woman slipped on the rocky shore as she attempted to jump ship. The unconscious woman was airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital and was said to be in critical condition. AMANDA MIKELBERG

New York PR firm jumps on ‘Hamilton’ bandwagon The Hamilton Network Campaign has been created by the playwright’s dad to work with political candidates. GARY KANE @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

One of New York City’s top public relations firms is capitalizing on the popularity of the hit Broadway show “Hamilton in a bid to attract politicians campaigning for city and state offices. The firm, MirRam Group, created The Hamilton Campaign Network in March to consult on election campaigns, according to state records. The use of the Hamil-

ton name seems like an appropriate choice in that a co-founder of MirRam is Luis Miranda, father of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and starred in the Tony-winning musical. “[The] name is topical with all of the renewed political interest on Hamilton as a historical figure,â€? MirRam spokesman Javier Gomez told the Daily News. The senior Miranda is involved in both companies, but the president of Hamilton Campaign Network is John Emrick, former chief of staff for state Senate Independent Democratic Conference leader Jeffrey Klein. Thus far, the new company’s clients include the Senate IDC and several state and New York City candidates.

Hermine spares much of East Coast but dampens holiday Forecasters warned swimmers and boaters along the Eastern Seaboard to stay out of treacherous waters and rough surf churned up by the storm. Hermine, a storm that raked Florida with hurricane-force winds last week, drifted far off the East Coast on Monday, sparing the Middle Atlantic states but forcing some beach closures. On Cape Cod and its islands, high surf and wind put a crimp in the Labor Day plans of many people looking to celebrate summer’s end, but some beaches farther south reopened. New York City said all public beaches would be closed through Tuesday because of “life threatening” rip currents generated by Hermine. Hermine was classified as a Category 1 hurricane when it slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Friday. It became a post-tropical storm by week’s end after its winds dropped below 74 miles per hour and it lost its tropical characteristics. The storm, which crossed northern Florida and then moved up the Georgia and the Carolina coasts, was packing sustained surface winds of up to 70 mph with higher gusts, the National Weather Service said. Its strongest winds were extending outward by about 230 miles, short of U.S. shores. “Just because it’s a post-tropical cyclone doesn’t mean the impact of tropical force winds, winds in general and storm surge go away,” said National Hurricane Center spokesman Den-

nis Feltgen. The storm has claimed at least three lives, in Florida and in North and South Carolina. The third reported death was that of a man struck by a car on a South Carolina highway on Friday as he tried to move a fallen tree, a Colleton County fire department spokesman said. Hermine was forecast to bring up to 2 inches of rain to Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts through Wednesday. A tropical storm warning remained in effect from the eastern end of New York’s Long Island and to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island off Massachusetts. At least one ferry operator on Monday canceled some trips to Nantucket, which reported winds of up to 39 mph, because of the storm. “We are taking it trip by trip at this time,” Hy-Line Cruises said in a Twitter message. On Block Island off Narragansett, Rhode Island, people appeared to be taking the unsettled weather in stride, even though it kept many tourists away. “Windy & cloudy on #BlockIsland after windy & brilliant yesterday. No ferries. Island deserted. Almost ideal. (Unless you own a business),” Twitter user Tom Anderson said. Storm-surge inundation levels of no more than one to three feet were expected in coastal areas. As the threat to New Jersey waned, Gov. Chris Christie ordered Island Beach State Park reopened for Monday. Hermine became the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 11 years, packing winds of 80 mph, and knocking out power to 300,000 homes and businesses. REUTERS

Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly dead at 92 Schlafly, who lived in the St. Louis suburb of Ladue, Missouri, died at her home in the presence of her family, Eagle Forum said in a statement. The cause of death was not given. Phyllis Schlafly, who became a “founding mother” of the modern U.S. conservative movement by battling feminists in the 1970s and working tirelessly to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment, died on Monday at the age of 92, her Eagle Forum group said. She was still a conservative force and popular speaker in her 90s, endorsing Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and praising his policy on immigration. She was a delegate to the Republicans’

convention in Cleveland. Schlafly once called feminists “a bunch of bitter women seeking a constitutional cure for their personal problems,” Time said, while insisting that “women find their greatest fulfillment at home with their family.” Her political ardor did not fade with age and in 2014, as President Barack Obama pushed for pay equity for women, Schlafly sparked controversy with a column for the Christian Post saying a man’s paycheck comes first.

“The pay gap between men and women is not all bad because it helps to promote and sustain marriages,” she said. “... The best way to improve economic prospects for women is to improve job prospects for the men in their lives, even if that means increasing the socalled pay gap.” Schlafly promoted traditional family values and once told a reporter that she always listed her occupation as “mother” when filling out applications. But she was hardly a typical stay-at-home housewife/mother. Shortly after marrying lawyer Fred Schlafly in 1949, she became active in Republican Party politics in Alton, Illinois, and ran unsuccessfully for Congress twice. She would go on to found the Eagle Forum grass-roots conservative group, write a newspaper column and newsletter and author some 20 books. REUTERS

Rodrigo Duterte, a plain-spoken populist known for his colorful remarks and his campaign against illegal drugs in which thousands of people have died, described Obama as a “son of a bitch” to reporters on Monday, a day ahead of the planned meeting in Laos, where South Asian leaders are meeting for annual summits. President Barack Obama canceled what would have been his first meeting with Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, after Duterte described Obama in vulgar terms, a White House spokesman said on Tuesday. Obama learned about the insult as he emerged from the Group of 20 summit in Hangzhou, China. At a news conference, he said he had told his aides to speak with Philippine officials “to find out is this, in fact, a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations,” leaving little doubt that the meeting would proceed as planned. “I always want to make sure that if I’m having a meeting, that

it’s actually productive and we’re getting something done,” Obama told reporters. Instead, Obama now plans to meet later on Tuesday with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, said Ned Price, spokesman for the White House National Security Council - a meeting where the response to North Korea’s latest missile tests is expected to be on the agenda. Obama arrived in Vientiane just before midnight on Monday, for the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to Laos, where he wants to begin to address the legacy of U.S. bombing during the Vietnam War. He was set to give an address on the importance he has placed on Southeast Asia in his foreign and economic policy during his two terms in office, which will end on Jan. 20, setting the stage for three days of meetings with regional leaders. The White House had said Obama did not plan to pull any punches on his concerns about human rights abuses in the Philippines, its treaty ally, when meeting Duterte. Duterte won the presidency in May as he promised to suppress crime and wipe out

drugs and drug dealers, and a wave of extrajudicial killings has followed. Duterte said it would be “rude” for Obama to raise the human rights issue, and told reporters such a conversation would prompt him to curse at Obama, using a Filipino phrase for “son of a bitch.” “Plenty will be killed until the last pusher is out of the streets. Until the [last] drug manufacturer is killed we will continue,” he said. It’s not the first time Duterte has cursed at a world leader. He called Pope Francis a “son of a whore” in May, and called U.S. Ambassador Philip Goldberg a “gay son of a whore.” On Monday, Obama said he recognized the importance of fighting the drug trade, but insisted it must be done under the rule of law. The unusually open tensions threaten to overshadow the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asia Summits in Laos from Tuesday to Thursday. The 10-member ASEAN will meet leaders of other regional powers: China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, Russia and the United States. REUTERS

500-year-old skull goes online in 3-D as part of Mary Rose project The ship was raised from the seabed in 1982 and is now on display at a museum in Portsmouth. A carpenter’s skull recovered from Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose, which sank in battle in 1545, can now be viewed in 3-D online — allowing the public to see his bad teeth and a head wound. The skull is part of a collection of 3-D scans of human remains, shoes and tools which people who cannot make it to the ship’s museum home can see on www.virtualtudors.org. The detailed, interactive images are part of a bigger scientific project on the website aimed at researchers working in the field of bone science. Nine other Mary Rose skulls can be viewed by

archaeologists, osteologists and forensic anthropologists who will take part in a study into the usefulness of 3-D models to the world of science. While experts identify historic features of the virtual images hidden to the layman, ordinary users can still zoom in on the carpenter’s eyebrow wound and rotate to the image to see his bad teeth. He would have been on board to carry out repairs which occurred during battle, like the one against an invading French fleet in 1545 during which the Mary Rose sunk off the south coast of England. After hunting for years, divers discovered the wreck in 1971, along with over 19,000 artefacts and the bones of 179 of its crew, providing historians with an insight into Tudor life at sea. REUTERS

BRIEF Rosetta’s missing Philae probe found in dark crack on comet High-resolution cameras on the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft have found space probe Philae, which landed on a comet nearly two years ago only to lose power because its solar-driven batteries were in the shade. Images taken from Rosetta at a distance of 1.7 miles showed Philae wedged into a dark crack on Comet 67P/Churyumov– Gerasimenko, the ESA said on Monday. Philae landed on the comet in November 2014 in what was considered a remarkable feat of precision space travel but the meter-size, 220 pound probe bounced several times before getting stuck against a cliff wall. Scientists could tell its approximate whereabouts on the comet thanks to radio ranging data but not its precise location. This year they gave up hope of restoring contact with the probe. While Philae did not have as much time as was hoped for experiments, information it has collected is reshaping thinking about comets and the project has helped in designing future missions. REUTERS

Obama defends Kaepernick’s right to protest even if his message is obscured President Barack Obama said on Monday that NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was exercising his constitutional right by refusing to stand for the national anthem, although he added that the nature of the protest could make it hard for some to hear his message. Speaking in China after a gathering of leaders of 20 leading economies, Obama said he had no doubt about Kaepernick’s sincerity but acknowledged that the protest was difficult for some members of the military and law enforcement to swallow. “I think there are a lot of ways you can do it as a general matter when it comes to the flag and the national anthem and the meaning that that holds for our men and women in uniform and those who’ve fought for us.

That is a tough thing for them to get past to then hear what his deeper concerns are,” Obama said. Kaepernick, who led the San Francisco 49ers to the 2013 Super Bowl but has since been demoted to backup, is the latest professional athlete to use his celebrity to call attention to the issue of the mistreatment of minority groups by law enforcement. Over the past two years, a series of police killings of AfricanAmericans in cities across the country have triggered protests and given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite the controversy, Obama said he would rather have engaged young people “trying to think through how they can be part of our democratic process than people who are just sitting on the sidelines

Trump, Clinton launch into final two months of campaigning The Labor Day holiday is the traditional kickoff to the frenzied, last stretch of campaigning ahead of the Nov. 8 election, and both Trump and Clinton chose to begin their day in Cleveland. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton opened the final, two-month stretch of the presidential campaign on Monday in the battleground state of Ohio as the Republican nominee saw a strengthening in opinion poll numbers that put pressure on his heavily favored Democratic rival. Trump, along with his vice presidential nominee, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, attended a Cleveland area meeting with labor leaders and union members before heading to a state fair in the Youngstown area. Clinton, scheduled to make a stop at a local business before marching in a Labor Day parade, told the press corps — traveling on the same plane with her for the first time — that it was the “last moment before the mad dash” to the White House.

“I’m ready, I’m more than ready,” Clinton said before takeoff. While Trump still trails Clinton in many battleground states where the election will likely be decided, he has drawn close to even with her in some national polls and even inched ahead of the Democrat in others. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll on Friday showed Trump had the support of 40 percent of likely voters to 39 percent for Clinton, erasing her recent eightpoint lead. Trump’s rebound from a series of self-inflicted wounds has followed the hiring of a new campaign management team, and the Republican nominee is showing more discipline on the stump, reading his rally speeches from teleprompters. Trump has been helped by what his campaign saw as a positive week last week in which he made a quick trip to Mexico, appearing side by side with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and visited a black church in Detroit. An immigration speech Trump gave following his trip to Mexico, however, drew criticism from some of his Hispanic supporters and several backers advising him on the issue decided to part

ways with his campaign. Trump told the labor meeting his rising poll numbers are a sign his messages about tossing bad international trade deals and curbing illegal immigration are resonating with voters. “We’re making a tremendous impact. We’re working very hard,” he said. Clinton, who was Presi-

dent Barack Obama’s firstterm secretary of state, appeared at few public campaign events during the latter half of August, instead raising funds at high-dollar events in the East Coast vacation spots of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons, and with celebrities in Los Angeles and high-tech leaders in Silicon Valley.

Clinton’s campaign announced that it had raised $143 million in August for her presidential bid and the Democratic Party. Clinton is again on the defensive over her use of a private email server and possible conflicts of interest with her family foundation while she was secretary of state, which have caused unease for some voters. But experts still see the Democratic nominee as the odds-on favorite to win the presidency. Some Democratic strategists criticized the news media over the weekend for not giving more coverage to a controversy involving Trump’s charitable foundation. The Washington Post said the New York businessman paid the Internal Revenue Service a $2,500 penalty this year after it was revealed that his foundation had violated tax laws by giving a political contribution to a campaign group connected to Florida’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, who has endorsed Trump. “With anyone other than Trump, this would be a major story and it’s a massive failure from the media that it isn’t,” tweeted Dan Pfeiffer, a former senior White House adviser to Obama. BRIEFS Trump says U.S. has a ‘false economy,’ interest rates must change Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Monday that the U.S. Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates low to prevent an economic downturn and “at some point” the rates must change. “They’re keeping the rates down so that everything else doesn’t go down,” Trump said in response to a reporter traveling on his plane who asked him to address a potential rate hike by the Federal Reserve in September. “We have a very false economy,” he said. “At some point the rates are going to have to change,” Trump, who was campaigning in Ohio on Monday, added. “The only thing that is strong is the artificial stock market,” he said. REUTERS Obama throws planned meeting with Philippines leader into doubt President Barack Obama said on Monday he was considering whether or not to meet his Filipino counterpart, Rodrigo Duterte, as planned, amid alarm over the latter’s campaign against illegal drugs in which thousands of people have died. Earlier in the day, the plaintalking Duterte had told reporters he would swear at Obama if he tried to question him about extrajudicial killings, using a Filipino phrase for “son of a b—” to describe the U.S. president. Speaking at a G20 meeting in China, and before traveling to Laos for a summit where he was due to hold talks with Duterte, Obama said he had asked his team to find out if “constructive, productive conversations” were possible. THRIFT SHOP TIME 1. ROLLIN’ IN What souvenir would President Obama most like from his final presidential trip to Asia? I’m guessing a snappy Hello Kitty golf bag, but more likely he wants greater Chinese cooperation on global warming, and more hope for the Trans Pacific Partnership. The vast trade deal would clear the way for more U.S. goods in the Asian market. But he’s got a problem at home. Hillary Clinton opposes it. And after many accusations of flip-flopping on the issue, her campaign now says her position will not change again. So maybe the president will also be shopping for some wiggle room to help Clinton come over to his side — in case she wins. 2. WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? Stateside, the person who’d like to be Obama’s heir in the Oval Office is being hit with heavy winds, and they’re not vestiges of Hurricane Hermine. The FBI’s latest release of documents related to Clinton’s emails seems to reinforce their finding that she was “extremely careless” with classified information. Some of her answers to the feds also seemed a tad incomplete. Her

surrogates are steering the conversation away from persistent questions about her trustworthiness, but watch Republicans flood the airwaves with that storyline as the week progresses. 3. GONNA POP SOME TAGS Some polls show the presidential race tightening once again. That’s bad news for Clinton, since she had a pretty commanding lead. However, it’s bad news for Donald Trump too, since he’s still behind. So Trump’s campaign is shopping for more Latino and AfricanAmerican voters, hoping to make them reconsider their historic Democratic leanings. Watch this week to see if any new polls show the outreach is working. Remember: He doesn’t have to get a majority of minority voters to switch — just a few percentage points could “look incredible” for him in electoral terms.

Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The By Matt Edgar keys are not wait, get a good evaluation from an expert and make sure precision arthritis targeting is America’s Health Writer used to make sure you have the best chance for success.” New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis the better the results. The key to trying to Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery avoid knee replacement surgery is doing the requiring months of rehabilitation. Sucessful Treatment The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the "C-Arm" allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing procedures without Precision Arthritis Targeting (P.A.T.T.)can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. Knee Pain Screenings Offered To Help Determine If New York Metro Area Residents Qualify For Popular Treatment Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds NY Pain MD of knee pain sufferers have New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.

Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.

Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.

Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.

Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other treatments like 6ynvisc, 6upartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. 6tudies show doctors doing joint injections without technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering only the best technology.

Advanced Medical Technology Can Make All The Difference: T Ňuorososcopic imaging allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so supposed to. Studies show that procedures done without this technology can miss the joint up to 30% of This is one reason NY Pain MD uses this P.A.T. Imaging Technology. with each and every treatment. And that’s not all “(very case is individual. 6ome patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. %ut most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. After getting treatment and feeling better, many patients have decided to cancel their total knee replacement surgeries.” added the director.

24 FILM

The 5 types of films you’ll watch this fall It’s over! Summer is dunzo, and now we can finally have more variety at the movies again. Is there only one film about superheroes coming out? (That’s right!) Of course, it’s also Oscar Season, but that doesn’t mean we’re stuck on a strict diet of high-toned dramas and serious performances. Here are five kinds of movies you can choose this fall. MATT PRIGGE

FRANCHISES, OF COURSE

GAME CHANGERS

It’s rare that we get a movie that might change the movies — heck, even the culture. So we have high, high hopes for Ang Lee’s latest technological marvel, “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” (Nov. 11), which is exciting because it will be projected in a high, high frame-rate. Without getting too technical, that means the images will be so crisp they’ll look less like a movie than honest-to-god reallife. (It’s what the first “The Hobbit” did back in 2012, though, by early reports, this time it won’t

Tom Cruise returns as the efficient badass in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” out Oct. 21.

Autumn is when the constant stream of sequels and prequels and reboots and remakes takes a long-needed vaca… oh, who are we kidding? There’s still plenty of franchises comin’ at us. There’s so many, in fact, that all we can do is list them: There’s a new “Blair Witch” (Sept. 16), the belated threequel “Bridget Jones’ Baby” (Sept. 16), a new Kevin Hart stand-up movie (“What Now?” Oct. 14), another Tyler Perry Movie (“Boo! A Madea Halloween,” Oct. 21), another damn Robert Langdon movie (“Inferno,” Oct. 28), even a new Marvel superhero romp (“Doctor Strange,” Nov.

look hideous.) Dipping into the memories of a decorated solider (Joe Alwyn), it promises gruesomely realistic, you-are-there depictions of battle, on top of a Mad Libs cast including Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Vin Diesel and Steve Martin. And it might just change the way we literally watch movies. The other game changer comes with a giant asterisk: It’s “The Birth of a Nation” (Oct. 7), Nate Parker’s Sundance titan about Nat Turner’s slave revolt. A movie about the black experi-

ence actually told by a black perspective, it was supposed to change the way we discuss race, and at a time when Black Lives Matter has somehow been treated like a controversial movement. Instead, Parker only recently opened up about the alleged rape he was accused of in his past, and now people are, quite understandably, talking about avoiding it altogether. Parker’s personal life is an impossible subject to broach, and all we can say is we hope the movie is as strong as everyone says it is.

PARAMOUNT

4). Oh, and Billy Bob Thornton’s drinking vodka handles in front of children again, hopefully to few diminishing returns, in “Bad Santa 2” (Nov. 23). The one we’re genuinely pumped for, though, is “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (Oct. 21), in which Tom Cruise returns as the brutally efficient mercenary or fixer or whatever he is. Don’t get too, too excited, though: The director this time is the boring Edward Zwick (“The Last Samurai”), and the villain is no longer played by Werner Herzog. Still, Cruise is our last real, classic movie star. Don’t take him for granted, as you

sometimes do. There aren’t just franchises; there are also attempted franchises! Some of them even have long names, like Tim Burton’s Eva Green-starring “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” (Sept. 30) and the “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (Nov. 18). Perhaps there’s a tentpole series to be made of the new “The Magnificent Seven” (Sept. 23), starring Denzel, which may be another remake/ reboot but one we’re cool with because Westerns ought never to have died.

These are recent stories — as are “Deepwater Horizon” (Sept. 30), with Mark Wahlberg battling the 2010 Gulf oil spill, and “Queen of Katwe” (Sept. 30), about Ugandan chess star Phiona Mutesi. Some reach back into the far-off past. “Loving” (Nov. 4) offers a muted retelling of Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), the couple that challenged Virginia’s miscegenation laws in 1967. Robert Zemeckis’ “Allied” (Nov. 23) is a WWII spy movie with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. And remember The Fab Four? One of them worked with Kanye once, we think. They get a new doc, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years” (Sept. 16), which knows better than try to tackle their entire discography in one fell swoop.

In Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” out Sept. 9, Tom Hanks plays Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who helped save a doomed flight in 2009.

By all accounts, Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” is one of the most innovative movies of the season.

REAL LIFE

Biopics and docudramas have been largely sequestered to Oscar season and, sure enough, the major studios (and small distributors) have clogged the next four months silly with them. First up is “Sully” (Sept. 9), which finds Clint Eastwood taking an incident that lasted about two minutes — when pilot Chesley Sullenberger (played by Tom Hanks) successfully and improbably landed a doomed commercial plane on New York’s Hudson River — and turns it into a meditation on doubt, trauma and humanity at its best. Speaking of which, not everyone would call Edward Snowden a hero, but that’s how he comes off in Oliver Stone’s “Snowden” (Sept. 16), with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the man who sacrificed his freedom for everyone else’s.

There’s some legitimate creativity afoot, too, but surely some of these will be sequelized to death, right? A movie with a title like “The Accountant” (Oct. 14) screams out for a franchise, especially since it’s a thriller with Ben Affleck as an accountant and math savant who lends himself out to the mafia. “Moana” (Nov. 23) is the rare toon with a female lead, and one who’s not white — though, being a Disney movie, it will likely score at least five direct-to-video sequels and maybe even a TV show. We’re using “original” loosely when we talk about something like “Voyage of Time” (Oct. 7), in which Terrence Malick basically expands

on the coolest part of “The Tree of Life” — the creation of the universe — for an IMAX spectacular. Then there are literary adaptations. “Arrival” (Nov. 11), from Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”), finds Amy Adams forced to talk to aliens. It’s based on a short story, while Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” (Nov. 11), comes from a novel. But we promise the tale of a woman (Isabelle Huppert) who has a series of very strange reactions to a rape plays like nothing else — and will prompt an avalanche of outraged think pieces. And there’s “The Girl on the Train” (Oct. 7), starring Emily Blunt.

Anna Kendrick and Ben Affleck team up for some thriller antics in “The Accountant.”

INDIES/ART HOUSE

Casey Affleck broods — but well — in Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed grief drama “Manchester by the Sea,” which arrives in November.

We hate to dump all the tiny-movies-that-could into one category, but that only speaks to how hard they are to classify. The film we most can’t wait to see this fall is the one that will probably make us cry for two

hours and change: “Manchester By the Sea” (Nov. 18), by Kenneth Lonergan, is another of the “Margaret” director’s studies of grief and guilt, with Casey Affleck dealing with the death of his brother, played by no less

than the world’s most likable human, Kyle Chandler. Meanwhile, do you know Kristen Stewart is now a cool art house movie star? She’s one of the three female leads in “Certain Women” (Oct. 14),

CLAIRE FOLGER

the latest from Kelly Reichardt (“Wendy and Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff). (Alas, you’ll have to wait till early next year to see her latest French art film, “Personal Shopper.”) Other promising indies/art house films include Kate Winslet

stomping about Australia in “The Dressmaker” (Sept. 23); Ethan Hawke and John Travolta gunslinging in Ti West’s Western “In a Valley of Violence” (Oct. 21); Park Chan-wook’s South Korean Sapphic costume drama/

thriller “The Handmaiden”(Oct. 21); and “American Honey” (Sept. 30), Andrea Arnold’s almost-three-hour road movie about annoying youngs, including Shia LaBeouf and terrific “It” girl Riley Keough. Continued on Page 26

26 FILM Continued from Page 25 THINGS TO COME: THE WINTER MOVIE SLATE

The internet has been totally low-key about “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (Dec. 16), the spinoff about the peeps who stole the Death Star plans that made the first “Star Wars” possible. But there’s a legitimate piece of counterprogramming that day: The modern-day musical “La La Land,” starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling and made by Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”) is already a festival hit. (Or will you go see “Collateral Beauty,” a comedic drama about depression starring Will Smith, Kate

Winslet and Helen Mirren?) The annual Christmas Day movie dump is pretty light this year, promising only the strange-sounding “Assassin’s Creed” movie with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, “Passengers” — the one with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in space — and a movie about singing animals (“Sing”). But what if the best movie of December is “Keep Watching” (Dec. 2), the requisite rando horror film dumped into the month’s first week? Stranger things have happened, especially in 2016.

Awwwwww. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling make like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in “La La Land,” out Dec. 14. DALE ROBINETTE

Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones takes the lead in the “Star Wars” spinoff “Rogue One,” which you can’t see until mid-December. Be patient, world!

Anya Taylor-Joy isn’t scary in real life The breakout star from “The Witch” takes on another dark role in “Morgan.” KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

Anya Taylor-Joy may have haunted viewers with her debut performance in 2015’s “The Witch,” a supernatural tale set in Puritan New England, but the 20-year-old actor doesn’t really like scary movies. “I’m such a scaredy cat,” she says. “I thought I was really brave, so I watched ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and didn’t sleep for weeks. I don’t really enjoy being frightened — but I do like making horror films.” The British-Argentine actor now stars as the title character in “Morgan,” a sci-fi thriller about a genetic experiment: a bio-engineered sentient being—that goes

terribly wrong. Directed by Luke Scott (Ridley Scott’s son), “Morgan,” out Friday, also stars Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti. We spoke with Taylor-Joy about the pitfalls of A.I., her love of music and how “Free Willy” inspired her to be an actor. I’m kind of afraid you’re going to strangle me through the phone. People have been coming up to me and saying they’re quite frightened of me. I guess that’s a good thing! The film is a timely tale about the dangers of technology. How do you feel about

GETTY IMAGES

A.I. and tech in general? I’m so technologically challenged; I’m not good with machines at all. In terms of A.I., I don’t really understand this human desire to continue to try and play God. We have so many films that show us the dangers of messing with nature, movies like “Jurassic Park.” “Morgan” is a cautionary tale in that sense. Come see our movie and see why we shouldn’t mess with genetics and people. The character of Morgan is pretty complex. It isn’t human, but it is capable of human emotions. What were some of the challenges of playing a character like that? I just thought, ‘Who is Morgan?’ I thought about

Besides listening to music, what do you do for fun when you’re not acting? God, I sound like such a nerd: I act for fun! I read a lot, I see my friends and all that, but I’ve been so fortunate that from the second I started doing this, I haven’t stopped. I love my job, I really do.

what it must be like to be so young, and she’s just sort of been created and dropped into this world. She knows so much just because of her engineering, and yet she knows nothing from experience. I really tried to look at everything with fresh eyes and from a very pure place. We saw you in the Skrillex video for “Red

Lips.” Can you tell us about your interest in music? I’m so passionate about it, I really couldn’t live without it. I love all different kinds — it just has to make me feel something. My friend Charlie [Heaton] is in that incredible show “Stranger Things,” and that soundtrack is amazing! I’ve been listening to that a lot recently.

You got your start modeling. When did you know you wanted to be an actor? Ever since I was very, very little I’d always be talking in different voices and making up stories, and my siblings always would go, “Anya please, shut up.” So, I just sort of talked to myself. It was always sort of a chip in my brain. I do remember seeing “Free Willy,” and seeing that kid ride a whale and thinking, ‘Oh my God, I want to ride a whale.’ Whatever that kid does, that’s what I want to do with my life.

“The Lesser Bohemians,” Eimear McBride Following her multiaward-nominated debut novel, “A Girl Is a HalfFormed Thing,” McBride writes a ’90s love story about an 18-yearold Irish girl, newly moved to London, and the older actor she meets there. Fireworks and drama ensue.

“Swing Time,” Zadie Smith The prizewinning author sets her highly-anticipated fifth novel in one of her favorite locations: North London. And then she branches out, telling the story of two young friends and dancers across England and West Africa as their friendship grows and then abruptly ends. In the process, the novel explores the meaning of friendship, identity, and how our roots shape us. FAMILY DRAMA

The author already deserves points for being brave enough to unapologetically admit that her protagonist, Eleanor Flood, is based on herself. In the novel, a woman who seems to have it all on paper must juggle a string of life’s messes, learning that even the best of affirmations can’t cut it sometimes.

For kids across the country heading back to school, September means new classes, new school supplies, new friends, and (hopefully) a new eagerness to learn. For adults? Well, the fall can seem like ... more of the same. But what if those in the professional world approached autumn a little more like a child going back to school? Andrew Mellen, organizational expert, speaker and author of “Unstuff Your Life” says the fall is a great time for adults to channel the same positive, clean-slate approach. “Summer is over, and the days are getting shorter, but instead of that being a drag, there’s an opportunity to focus on the things you really want to get done in the last four months of the year,” Mellen says. So if your “back to school” looks like “back to the fluorescent lighting of my office cubicle,” keep the following tips in mind.

Refresh your space

Just as students organize their lockers, adults can get in on the creativity when it comes to their workspaces. Stacked papers? Messy drawers? Fall is the new spring when it comes to cleaning , so get ready to reorganize and refresh. “Dispatch the clutter, find a proper home for things, and let go of what’s not serving you,” he says. “The more open space you have, the more you are going to be thinking clearly.”

Make new friends Just like a new school year paves the way for friendships in the classroom, the fall is a great time to reboot your work relationships. Mellen suggests revisiting collaborative projects and approaching them with a new outlook, letting go of grudges and past tensions with co-workers. “Wipe all of those resentments away and see opportunities for collaboration,”

Learn something new The fall is the time to pursue opportunities for growth that you might have been postponing.

Whether it’s taking a painting class or trying yoga for the first time, embrace learning something new. “Just the act of putting yourself in a learning mode will bring an enthusiasm and excitement that will inevitably affect your attitude at work as well,” Mellen says. “You’ll be more open and curious because you’ve had an opportunity to express yourself in a way distinct from what you would normally do.”

Maintain a steady routine A firm routine can make early mornings with kids more tolerable, but a daily regimen is equally important for a grown up’s productivity. “I would suggest that everything that can be automated become automated,” Mellen says. “If you have a timer function on your coffee pot, use it. Plan your meals in advance. Lay out clothes the night before,” Mellen says. Keep close track of your appointments, commitments, and obligations. “If you’re not using your calendar to run your day, you have very little likelihood of the day going how you want it to go.”

Getting uninflamed ISTOCK

Author Shelly Malone on how an anti-inflammatory diet all but cured her rheumatoid arthritis. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

Nine years ago, just weeks after giving birth to her first child, Shelly Malone was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Fatigued to the point that she struggled to get out of bed, suffered from achy, painful joints and burning, itchy skin, Malone was terrified that these symptoms might dictate the rest of her life. When conventional medical treatments didn’t work, Malone, a registered dietician and nutritionist, looked elsewhere. Within a week of switching to an antiinflammatory diet, her pain dissipated almost

completely. “Inflamed,”which came out this summer,is Malone’s story of how she was able to manage her illness by taking a holistic approach to her health. It also serves a blueprint for how others suffering from chronic conditions can see improvements, just by changing their diet and lifestyle. Today, while Malone still has RA, she is without symptoms. We spoke with the author about her path toward better health.

What exactly is “inflammation,” and what are the symptoms? Inflammation is basically

MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY to heal it, is beneficial, because it’s our body’s way of healing. But it becomes an issue when it’s chronic inflammation, and you’re constantly having it run through your body because there’s something underlying that’s triggering it. It could be food sensitivities, or a hormonal issue, say if you’re eating a ton of sugar and your glucose is going up and your insulin has to respond, or stress, causing cortisol to run through your body. Symptoms like digestive issues, or skin conditions like eczema, or acne or psoriasis—these are clues something’s not quite right. What is an anti-inflammatory diet? There’s not really one specific definition of it. My definition is eliminating any foods you’re sensitive to — that can be the source of a constant trigger of inflammation throughout your body— eating more whole foods,

I have to be very disciplined about my sleep, very protective, I will say, in social situations or things like that, I want to get home and get up early—I have small kids. Or working, I kind of have a rule—which got thrown out the window finishing this book—in general I try to not work after 8 p.m., because it will keep me up. I try to turn my phone off after 8 p.m. What are some small first steps someone suffering from inflammation should take? I would definitely look at trying to cut out gluten— with my clients, if they’re having some sort of chronic symptoms, I usually start with gluten— and taking out processed cow’s milk and limiting sugar intake. I’d saw swap out your fats. A big source of inflammation is an imbalance between omega-6 fats, in processed vegetable oils like canola or soy oil, and omega-3 fats, found in fish and algae oil and flax. A lot people aren’t eating enough omega-3s. Use coconut oil, avocado oil or olive oil. Butter’s not something to be afraid of if you’re getting it from a organic, grass-fed source.

Vaccines are key to public health ASK MOUNT SINAI Stay Healthy You have medical questions? We have answers. Metro is teaming up with the experts at the esteemed Mount Sinai Health System to provide answers to your most pressing medical concerns. Send us an email at askmtsinai@ metro.us. We’ll select one question and publish an answer every other week.

If school hasn’t started for the kids in your life yet, the first day is likely only a matter of days away. All children ages 2 through 18 attending daycare or school in New York City (and state) are required to have been immunized against contagious diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. And starting this year, seventh graders in New York state are required to be vaccinated against meningitis. In addition, preteens and teens are encouraged to get vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer. Dosage levels and vaccine schedules can be found at school.nyc.gov. We discussed the importance of vaccinations with Dr. Gail Shust, assistant professor of pediatrics, infectious diseases and medical education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Health System. First, let’s talk about the dispelled rumor that vaccines cause autism. That has been 100 percent disproved. There is absolutely no link between vaccines and autism. That link doesn’t exist.

Are there side effects families should be concerned about when kids get immunized? Just like any medication, there can always be side effects. If any parents are concerned about that, they should definitely talk to the doctors and nurses that they see. … These vaccines are tested on literally thousands of people before they’re given out to the public. The most common side effect is a local reaction. … Some kids will get just a little local tenderness, where they got the vaccine. Let’s talk about the HPV and meningitis vaccines. There was some controversy about the HPV vaccine, some people claiming it was the equivalent of granting teenagers permission to have sex. Right, when they’ve actually looked at that in studies to see, it really hasn’t proven to be the case. It’s an amazing thing. You’re basically giving a gift to your children, because you’re saying, “Look at this, I want to help protect you against the possibility of developing cervical cancer later in your life.” I’m a mom of two

in Princeton a couple years ago of meningitis B, which was a kind of meningitis that wasn’t covered in the old vaccine. Now, there is a new vaccine that covers that.

Just a little pinch can save a kid — and community — from disease.

ISTOCK

girls, and ... I encourage them to get all of these recommended vaccinations, including HPV.

either very young babies or people who are immune-compromised for various reasons.

Should boys get the HPV vaccine too, even though it’s touted as a cervical cancer preventive? There are other sexually transmitted infections that they can get, and also the idea, again, of community immunity: protecting each other. There are some people who can’t get vaccines:

Colleges are requiring students to be immunized against meningitis before they enroll, is that right? That’s right. It’s something that’s recommended for college. Now we have a new [vaccine], some people might have read about. Locally, there was an outbreak

BE INDEPENDENT

What else is important for parents to know about getting their kids immunized? The other thing that people still have some concerns about is mercury in vaccines. Most vaccines don’t have any type of mercury in them. … Ethlymercury, which is a type of mercury which has some harmful effects, hasn’t been in vaccines in this country for over 10 years. Like I said, I’m a mom. I have two kids, and I think parents at the end of the day just want to do what’s best for their kids. It’s just really important, if anyone does have any questions or concerns, that they just talk to their pediatrician about it. Because, again, these things are studied extensively, and a general pediatrician, unfortunately, has seen the effects of some of these diseases that these vaccines protect against. SHEILA DOUGHERTY

ELI MUST LEAD GIANTS BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS MARC MALUSIS OPINION Marc Malusis is a columnist for Metro New York and a host on WFAN and CBS Sports Radio. @marcmalusis

Eli Manning has everything in place to make the playos after the Giants picked a new head coach and brought in new talent. GETTY IMAGES

There are no excuses this season for Eli Manning. He needs to take the Giants to the playos. Now, there really is not much debate about how important the quarterback position is in the NFL. When you look at the landscape of the NFC East, the other starting quarterback are Kirk Cousins (Washington), Dak Prescott (Dallas) and Carson Wentz/Chase Daniel (Philadelphia). There is no debate whatsoever with who is the best and most reliable starting quarterback in this division and he is a New York Giant. The Giants should be the favorites to win the NFC East heading into the start of the

season in 2016 and Manning needs to lead the way. The Giants transitioned this oseason from Tom Coughlin as head coach and they named former oensive coordinator Ben McAdoo the new boss. General manager Jerry Reese spent $200 million dollars in the oseason to improve what was a putrid defense in 2015, one that ranked dead last in total defense and proved to be little more than a speed bump to opposing oenses. They brought in Olivier Vernon to help out the pass rush, cornerback Janoris Jenkins to help out the secondary and defensive tackle Damon

The Future of Foot Surgery has arrived at Downtown Podiatry Services

Harrison to help stabilize the run defense. I understand there are questions along the oensive line with the development of Ereck Flowers at left tackle and the right side of the oensive line. But the Giants are poised to ďŹ eld a strong overall team this season. This is an organization that has not made the playos in four straight seasons. That is why they decided to make a coaching change. The team and the organization needed a new voice and ownership wanted better results. For Manning, he did not have to learn a new oense

with McAdoo sliding over from oensive coordinator to head coach. Manning has the weapons at the skill positions that would make most quarterbacks jealous, including arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in Odell Beckham Jr. Of course, the critics have always been there for Eli. He has been ridiculed sometimes for the goofy faces, the ugly throws and the poor decisions. The defenders have countered with his performances in the clutch and certainly his two Super Bowl crowns. He has had to deal with the comparisons to his older brother Peyton, who

had a better career and a bigger impact on the game. He has had to deal with the expectations of being the son of Archie and the brother of Peyton and all the good and the bad that comes along with that. In essence, Eli Manning has dealt with a lot in a Giants uniform and has handled it all very well. This year, he deals with the expectations to win again. No, I don’t expect the Giants to win the Super Bowl this season. But, to be honest, I did not expect them to win in 2007 and 2011 either. I expect the Giants to make the playos this season. Man-

ning needs to lead the way and when you compare him to the other quarterbacks in the division, there is no comparison. I know football is a team game and he needs his oensive line to protect and his defense to stop somebody. However, the quarterback can be the great equalizer in the NFL. It is the most important position in the National Football League and Manning is the best starting quarterback in the NFC East. Money was spent in the oseason to solve some issues with the team. Manning needs to show in 2016 that it was money well spent.

Wozniacki feels right at home in NYC The former top-ranked star is back in action on Tuesday. ADAM ZAGORIA @MetroNewYork sports@metro.us

Caroline Wozniacki was born in Denmark, lives in Monte Carlo and owns a pair of twobedroom apartments off Union Square West for which she paid close to $9 million. So when she plays the U.S. Open every year, she feels right at home in the Big Apple. Her mother cooks and does laundry for Wozniacki while she’s here, too. “It’s nice to have mom around,” the 26-year-old said. “Usually I have to do all that myself. It’s nice just being able to sleep in your own bed. It’s a more relaxed feeling. Also, I have so many friends here, so every day I have been going out for lunch or dinners and just kind of enjoyed the city, as well. I think that’s kind of recharged my batteries.” The former world No. 1 has fallen to No. 74 in the rankings but is making a run at this US Open. After using her steady play to knock out the more erratic Madison Keys, the No. 8 seed, in straight sets on Sunday, Wozniacki will face Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. If she gets through that, she would face the winner between No. 2 An-

gelique Kerber and No. 7 Roberta Vinci in the semifinals on Thursday. “I know it sounds bad, but honestly, at this point I’m like, I really don’t care what my ranking is,” the unseeded Wozniacki said. “Because if I’m not in the top 5 I feel like it’s not where I want to be, so whether I’m 20 in the world or 100 in the world, it doesn’t matter because I’m going to play the same people anyway.” Perhaps buoyed by sleeping in her own bed and eating her mom’s cooking, Wozniacki is

feeling good about her play after a poor year that featured a right ankle injury in April. She lost in the first round at the Australian Open, missed the French Open with the ankle injury and then lost again in the first round at Wimbledon. Entering the Open, she was just 13-14 in 2016. “It’s tough to play well or not well when you’re injured,” she said of her season. “I think at that point you’re just thinking to get back on court and feeling healthy. The fact that I have been playing

good the last few weeks and really my ankle feels good, the rest of my body feels good, I think that’s the main thing.” Wozniacki was ranked No. 1 for 67 weeks in 2010 and 2011 and reached two Grand Slam finals, finishing runnerup at the 2009 and 2014 U.S. Opens. She was criticized during her run as No. 1 for failing to win a major tournament. Wozniacki also had to deal with the much publicized end of her engagement to golfer Rory McIlroy in 2014. McIlroy

called it off after seeing the wedding invitations. Since then she has been linked to San Antonio Spurs (and former Knicks) forward David Lee, who was in attendance for her victory over Keys. Lee was one of many fans on Ashe who supported the Dane against Keys, who is seen as a great American hope for women’s tennis when Venus and Serena Williams are no longer around. “I love it here,” Wozniacki said. “They have been behind me since

basically the first time I stepped out on the big court and people realized that I may become a good player one day. “I think it’s just been equal love, you know, for New York and then the crowd for me since I reached the finals in 2009. It feels amazing.” And with another win on Tuesday, Wozniacki will be able to sleep in her own bed knowing she’s made the semifinals of the U.S. Open.
