TURNER REGISTERS AS SEX OFFENDER IN OHIO AFTER ASSAULT
1
Former Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner has registered as a sex offender in his home state of Ohio, following his conviction for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in 2015 and public outrage over his six-month jail sentence. The controversy over a sentence seen as too short and over the fact Turner, a one-time U.S. Olympic hopeful, was released early has stoked intense debate about sexual assault on U.S. college campuses and beyond. Turner, 21, was freed from jail last Friday after serving just half of his sentence for convictions of assault with intent to commit rape, penetration of an intoxicated person, and penetration of an unconscious person. California jail inmates can serve half time for factors like good behavior. REUTERS
FIRE GUTS AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT SHED IN MARYLAND

A fire on Tuesday gutted a storage shed at a U.S. Department of Agriculture complex in Maryland that was closed last week because of threats, fire officials said. A spokesman for the Prince George’s County fire department reported the blaze at Building 426 at the USDA’s Beltsville facility was extinguished just under two hours after he sent an initial tweet on it. An Agriculture Department statement said the fire occurred at a storage shed and there were no injuries. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, it added. Live TV footage showed the wood frame building engulfed in flames, with part of the walls missing and a section of the roof gone as firefighters poured water onto the structure. A USDA spokeswoman had no details on whether the building was burned to the ground or if anything was stolen. REUTERS
PAYPAL, MASTERCARD REACH DEAL FOR STORE PAYMENTS
3
MasterCard Inc. said on Tuesday it had expanded its deal with payment processor PayPal Holdings Inc., which would allow customers to use PayPal’s payment services in stores. PayPal’s partnership follows a similar deal with MasterCard’s larger rival Visa Inc. in July as the company looks to expand its payments network. PayPal will allow users to select a credit or debit card as the default payment method and share data on transactions made through MasterCard’s tap-and-pay feature, which allows the shopper to wave a card or mobile phone over a reader to pay, the companies said in a statement. As part of the deal, MasterCard will allow PayPal users to withdraw cash from their accounts using a debit card and also waive the digital wallet fee it currently charges PayPal. REUTERS

Fox will pay $20M to former anchor in harassment suit settlement Gretchen Carlson dropped her suit against Roger Ailes in exchange for the sum. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Fox will pay $20 million to Gretchen Carlson to settle her sex harassment suit against the network’s former chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, an unprecedented sum according to legal experts. Along with her windfall, Carlson, who had been with the network since 2005 until her contract ended in June, also received a mea culpa from the network for Ailes’ behavior. “We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve,” the company said in their news release. Carlson filed the lawsuit in early July, claiming repeated harassment from Ailes and colleagues dating back 10 years. Substantiating her claims were audio recordings
of Ailes saying, “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago,” and other shocking statements. She also claimed the company retaliated by taking her off “Fox & Friends” and cutting her pay because she didn’t sleep with him. Fox News’ parent company, 21st Century Fox, quickly launched an internal investigation, and just two weeks later, Ailes, 76, resigned after 20 years as chairman and CEO of Fox News, collecting a $40 million settlement of his own. “What she accomplished was to say, ‘I was objectified and degraded. The terms of my contract were different for me, because I was sexualized and expected to sleep with him to keep my job,’” said Jack Tuckner, a New York civil rights attorney who specializes in harassment and discrimination. Yet this outcome between such high-profile players is misleading, Tuckner said. “It raises awareness for us mere mortals who are lucky for a five-figure settlement,” he said, adding that a good and fair outcome for someone
who lost work in such a situation would be lucky for a payout of six to 12 months of salary. “Women who expect $20 million, or even $1 million, with all things like punitive damages considered, will be sorely disappointed,” added Tuckner. “This is not representative of 99.9 percent of cases.” New Jersey court filings show Carlson, 50, voluntarily dropped the lawsuit. In a statement said she was grateful for Fox’s “decisive action.” The suit between Carlson and Fox may be over, but there are several other women suing them for sexual harassment in cases that have not been resolved. Former anchor Andrea Tantaros claimed she was taken off the air in April in retaliation for rebuffing Ailes’ advances and lodging a complaint with Fox execs. Her lawsuit claims Fox is a “sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like culture, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny.” Whether Tantaros can receive a similar settlement from Fox is hard to say, said Tuckner. “Every case is different. Gretchen was able to hit it
out of the park. She had a trifecta: a star legal team, she had these tapes, she had witnesses. There was just no defense,” Tuckner said. Ailes’ history of inappropriate behavior stretches back to the 1980s when he was working at NBC, New York magazine reported. A woman named Randi Harrison said that when she interviewed for a producing job, Ailes said he would increase her salary by $100 a week in exchange for sex. Carlson, who was crowned Miss America in 1989 and is a graduate of Stanford University, said she is now on a mission to “empower women in the workplace.” “I’m ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace,” she said in a statement. She also thanked the people who supported her #StandWithGretchen Twitter campaign. “All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace in which talent, hard work and loyalty are recognized, revered and rewarded.”

Brooklyn man charged with murder in J’Ouvert killing Police continue to look for a suspect in a separate shooting that killed a teenager that night. GARY KANE @MetroNewYork gary.kane@metro.us
A 22-year-old Brooklyn man was charged Tuesday with the shooting death of a St. John’s University graduate during the J’Ouvert celebrations on Monday. Reginald Moise, of Westminister Road, was taken into custody in the morning and questioned about the fatal shooting of Tiarah Poyau, 22. Hours later, detectives charged him with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Poyau was shot in the face, police said. Tyreke Borel, 17, was also killed in a separate
shooting at J’Ouvert. Poyau was shot on Empire Boulevard at about the time police were responding to a report of a fight in the vicinity of Washington Avenue and McKeever Place. No suspect has been identified in the Borel shooting. The two killings occurred despite what Mayor Bill de Blasio called “extraordinary” measures to protect revelers attending the annual celebration of Caribbean culture. De Blasio said Monday that the city will review what action to take with regard to the future of J’Ouvert and the West Indian Day parade. He said the city will consider “all options,” hinting that banning J’Ouvert would be a possibility. An estimated crowd of 250,000 people attended the J’Ouvert festivities last weekend.

Activists demand release of NYPD misconduct records of chokehold officer
Rally for Eric Garner GETTY IMAGES
Community activists and some New York City elected officials are demanding that the police department release misconduct records pertaining to the officer who placed Eric Garner in a chokehold that killed him. Elected officials and advocates told the Daily News that they intend to file court briefs opposing the city’s appeal of a July 15 state court decision that called from release of a summary of misconduct findings against officer Daniel Pantaleo, who administered the
chokehold. “Change does not happen without an honest conversation in our communities, in our courthouses, at City Hall about how we have real reform in the criminal justice system, real reform in our communities and real relationships between NYPD and the people they serve,” Tina Luongo, attorney-in-chief for Legal Aid Society Criminal Practice, the plaintiff in the court case, said during a news conference. The NYPD declared that it is halting its prac-
tice of publicly disclosing a police officer’s disciplinary record, suggesting that the 1976 state Civil Rights law makes it impossible for them to release such information. State Supreme Court Judge Alice Schlesinger ordered the release of the documents, which had been sought by The Legal Aid Society under the state Freedom of Information Law. Garner, 43, died in July 2014 as police tried to arrest him for selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. Pantaleo used a takedown move that
many have described as a chokehold. Garner was heard telling officers that “I can’t breathe” as he was being arrested. The city medical examiner found the apparent police chokehold contributed to Garner’s death, but a grand jury declined to indict the officer in the death. The city paid the Garner family nearly $6 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. The Justice Department has been reviewing the case to determine if Garner’s civil rights were violated. GARY KANE

Teen who lost his leg in Central Park explosion can walk again More than $70,000 in donations helped cover his medical expenses. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

The Virginia teen who lost his leg after he stepped on explosive material in Central Park during the Fourth of July weekend is walking again, thanks to donations that allowed him to afford a prosthesis. “This past week, I returned to school and took my first steps on a pros-
thetic leg, which all of you have helped me pay for (in addition to other medical bills and recovery expenses),” wrote Connor Golden in a message posted Monday on the GoFundMe page his family set up. The music engineering major at the University of Miami looks happy and high-spirited in a photo showing him walking on crutches and sporting a prosthetic leg. Golden, 19, was vis-
iting New York from Fairfax County when he stepped on what looked like a rock around 11 a.m. on July 3 — a rock that ended up setting off an explosive device made from homemade products and packed in a plastic bag. Police believe a “hobbyist” had abandoned his device in the park when it failed to detonate, it was reported. Golden’s foot was mutilated in the explosion that “sounded like
a cannon,” one witness said. The injury forced surgeons to amputate Golden’s leg below the knee. Now he’s thanking the generous people who helped him get on with his life by donating more than $70,000. “Friends, family, and compassionate people I have never met — including fellow amputees, New Yorkers, fellow students and alumni, and those having a shared interest in music or scouting — have decided to help. I want everyone to know how much your support means to me,” he wrote.
A Long Island man was recovering from a deadly bite by his pet snake, an Egyptian sawscaled viper, after being airlifted to a New York City hospital for emergency treatment. The 33-year-old West Babylon man was handling the deadly viper, one of his six illegal pet snakes, late Monday night when it sunk its fangs into his hand. He also owns two rattlesnakes, one monocled cobra, one African puff adder and one Western African viper, police said. “All six snakes are illegal in New York state,” said Roy Gross, chief of department of the Sufolk County SPCA. He said the man was lucky that he wasn’t killed by the viper bite — and luckier yet that it was not the monocled cobra or the puff adder, which are even deadlier. The venom from his viper had the potential to paralyze him and cause his organs to shut down one by one. “He apparently had
been handling these snakes for some time and thought he knew what he was doing. But if you play with fire you are going to get burned,” Gross said. The man had to be taken by helicopter to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx because it is one of the few hospitals in the area equipped to treat the exotic snake bite. Luckily, they had the appropriate antivenom for the bite, and he was released from the hospital. As for the illegal snakes, they were all confiscated, said Gross, adding that it is likely that the man will be charged for having possession of the contraband. Gross added that the Suffolk County SPCA will be having an amnesty drop-off where people may drop off their illegal reptiles and mammals without any charges on Oct. 15 at 725 Veterans Highway, Building 16, in Hauppauge. New Yorkers enjoyed the safest summer in more than two decades — so says the city’s police department. Despite what seemed like a series of headlinegrabbing killings during the summer, including the shooting deaths of two people at last weekend’s J’Ouvert celebration, serious crime is down, said Police Commissioner William Bratton on Tuesday during his final news briefing on city crime. “Detractors said it couldn’t be done. We have further reduced violence and serious crime across this city yet
again, he said. Overall, reported crimes were at the lowest level since 1994 when the city started accumulating crime statistics on its Compstat system, the commissioner said. The NYPD noted that 1,946 murders occurred in 1993. There were 352 murders last year, police records showed. There were 1,610 fewer crimes reported during the months of June, July and August for a 5 percent reduction in crimes reported during the same time period last year, Bratton said. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the statistics point to the improvements made in policing the city. “It is clear from our success this summer that neighborhood policing works, he said.

Bronx man indicted for murder, body yet to be found A Bronx man has been indicted for the murder of his girlfriend, whose body he claims to have thrown in a dumpster, the Bronx District Attorney’s OďŹƒce said. Miguel Bonilla, 44, of 1460 Grand Concourse, was indicted on Tuesday for the seconddegree murder of his 52-year-old girlfriend, Juana Alvarez. “This defendant is accused of killing his girlfriend and disposing of her body like trash,â€? said Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark. “We will get justice for the victim, whose remains have yet to be found.â€? The New York Daily News reported that when he denied the charges, Bonilla clutched a paperback copy of Stephen King’s 2015 book, “Finders Keepers,â€? which tells the tale of an author’s obsessed fan who turns to murder. The cover art of the novel is an image of a tree and a wooden chest dripping in blood. According to reports, sometime between July 25 and 29, Bonilla allegedly stabbed Alvarez in the head and chest while she laid in bed in the suspect’s apartment. “I f---ing hate her,â€? Bonilla said in a videotaped confession, the New York Daily News reported. A neighbor, Maria Nevarez, said Bonilla had threatened to

kill Alvarez before. “I used to tell her, ‘Throw him out. Throw him out. Something’s gonna happen,’â€? Nevarez told the Daily News “And now look! She was a sweetheart. She didn’t deserve that.â€? Bonilla allegedly stashed the body in a closet for a few days before putting it in a plastic bin that he then hauled in a shopping cart and threw in a dumpster. Bonilla was arrested in August after jumping a subway turnstile. He reportedly told police as he was being cued, “Detectives probably want to talk to me about a homicide,â€? the Daily News reported. Alvarez’s body has still not been found. She has not been seen since July 11. Bonilla is due back in court on Dec. 12. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA

Minnesota man admits to abducting and killing 11-year-old in 1989 Danny Heinrich, 53, said he kidnapped, sexually assaulted and fatally shot Jacob Wetterling, who was riding his bike on a rural Minnesota road with his brother and friend when he was abducted in October 1989 in a case that shook the U.S. Midwestern state. A Minnesota man who had been considered a “person of interest” admitted in court on Tuesday to the 1989 abduction and killing of an 11-year-old boy whose remains he helped lead police to last week, authorities said. Heinrich “is the confessed murderer of
Jacob Wetterling, and nearly 27 years after he committed this heinous crime, he has been brought to justice. And Jacob is finally home,” Andrew Luger, U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota, said in a statement. Last October, authorities named Heinrich a person of interest in the case, given the similarities between Wetterling’s abduction and a number of unsolved sexual assaults in central Minnesota dating to the 1980s. Daniel (Danny) James Heinrich, 53, who confessed on Tuesday to the 1989 slaying of Jacob Wetterling, is seen in an undated photo released by the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office in Zimmerman, Minnesota, U.S. Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office/ Handout via Reuters

Wetterling’s parents, Patty and Jerry Wetterling, became advocates for missing children after his disappearance. Heinrich, who has been in custody since his arrest last year, detailed the abduction and killing of Wetterling in
court on Tuesday. “I panicked. I pulled the revolver out of my pocket ... I loaded it with two rounds. I told Jacob to turn around,” the Minneapolis Star Tribune quoted Heinrich as telling the court. “I told him I had to
go to the bathroom,” Heinrich said. “I raised the revolver to his head. I turned my head and it clicked once. I pulled the trigger again and it went off. Looked back, he was still standing.” “I raised the revolver again and shot him again.” Authorities searched Heinrich’s home in July 2015, finding child pornography in three-ring binders and on a computer hard drive. They also found dozens of videotapes Heinrich appeared to have filmed of young boys delivering newspapers, playing or riding bicycles, officials said, but Wetterling’s picture was not among them. Heinrich also pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges on Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department said. REUTERS
BRIEF Company agrees to temporarily halt some North Dakota pipeline work A Native American tribal chairman said his people were “disappointed” that a company agreed on Tuesday to temporarily halt construction of an oil pipeline only in some but not all parts of North Dakota where the tribe says it has sacred sites. After violent clashes over the weekend between protesters and security officers near the construction site, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and a neighboring Native American tribe had asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Sunday for a temporary restraining order against Dakota Access, the company building the pipeline. U.S. Judge James Boasberg said on Tuesday he had granted in part and denied in part the temporary restraining order, and that he would decide by Friday whether to grant the tribes’ larger challenge to the pipeline. A group of firms led by Energy Transfer Partners is building the 1,100-mile pipeline. The $3.7 billion project would be the first to bring crude oil from Bakken shale, a vast oil formation in North Dakota, directly to refineries in the U.S. Gulf Coast. REUTERS

Candidates turn up the heat over national security On Wednesday, Clinton and Trump will participate in a televised forum on national security sponsored by a veterans group. The presidential campaign’s focus shifted to national security on Tuesday as Republican Donald Trump pledged to help female veterans during a Virginia Beach campaign stop, and with Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine set to deliver a related speech in North Carolina. Trump, speaking at the event in Virginia, a state with a large military population, began with a pledge to help female veterans if he wins the Nov. 8 election and also said he would work with Russia’s
president, Vladimir Putin, to “solve the problemâ€? posed by the Islamic State militant group. “Putin looks at Hillary Clinton and he smiles,â€? Trump said of the Democratic presidential nominee. Meanwhile Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, will deliver a national security speech in North Carolina criticizing Trump’s foreign policy credentials, saying he botched his meeting last week with Mexican President Enrique PeĂąa Nieto. “The centerpiece of Trump’s campaign is building a wall and making Mexico pay for it. It’s even a chant at his rallies,â€? Kaine will say, according to excerpts of the speech reviewed by Reuters. “Yet when Trump finally had the chance to look President PeĂąa Nieto

in the eye, he said it never came up. “In other words, he choked. Turns out, Donald isn’t such a great negotiator after all, Kaine will add of the New York businessman. Clinton, a former secretary of state, made similar remarks about Trump’s visit to Mexico on Monday in an interview with ABC. Ahead of Tuesday’s events, Clinton’s cam-
paign organized a press conference with military veteran supporters before Trump’s event in Virginia and released a new television advertisement showing veterans and their families reacting to statements Trump has made about national security. In the ad, their reactions are juxtaposed with footage of Trump saying that he knows more about Islamic State than U.S.
military generals, criticizing Sen. John McCain for being captured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and comparing what he called his own sacrifices as a businessman to those of parents of slain soldiers. Clinton told a get-outthe-vote rally in Tampa, Florida, that she, not Trump, is best prepared to protect the U.S. military serving overseas and take on Islamic State. “We are going to do whatever is necessary for as long as it takes to bring ISIS to justice, Clinton said. “I am a very patient person, I don’t quit, I don’t give up, I don’t blink, she added. Both Florida and Virginia are considered swing states that could play a pivotal role in the outcome of the November election. REUTERS
BRIEF Clinton slams Trump for commenting on Fed policies Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton criticized Republican rival Donald Trump on Tuesday for making comments about the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies, which she said should be o-limits for U.S. presidents and presidential candidates. “You should not be commenting on Fed actions when you are either running for president or you are president,â€? Clinton told reporters on her campaign plane. “Words have consequences. Words move markets. Words can be misinterpreted.â€? Trump, who has previously accused the U.S. central bank of keeping interest rates low to help Democratic President Barack Obama, said on Monday that interest rates should change. “They’re keeping the rates down so that everything else doesn’t go down,â€? Trump said in response to a reporter’s request to address a potential rate hike by the Federal Reserve in September. “We have a very false economy.â€? REUTERS

LA passenger train crash injures at least 21 At least 10 people were injured when a Metrolink commuter train carrying nearly 200 passengers crashed into a semi truck on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, fire department officials said. The collision occurred around 10:40 a.m. local time in the Sun Valley neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The department said at least 21 people were taken to area hospitals with injuries not considered life threatening. The driver of the truck was uninjured, the fire department said. Dozens of firefighters and medical personnel were on the scene, triaging the train’s 187 passengers, fire department spokesman Erik Scott said.

Scott said the crash occurred in an intersection and a crossing guard arm appeared to have been snapped. Fire officials said the five-car, double-decker train was stopped on the tracks and that roads in the area had been closed. Law enforcement were conducting an investigation into the crash, Scott said. REUTERS

BRIEF Ex-Air China employee pleads not guilty to US smuggling charge A former Air China Ltd. employee linked to defendants in a U.N. bribery case pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to U.S. charges that she helped military personnel at China’s mission to the United Nations smuggle packages out of the United States. Ying Lin, whom prosecutors said also helped a Chinese national under investigation by the FBI flee the United States last year, entered her plea through her lawyer in Brooklyn federal court to charges including smuggling and obstruction of justice. “The charges against her are baseless,” Deborah Colson, Lin’s lawyer, told reporters. “She really looks forward to fighting this and having her day in court.” Prosecutors said Lin, a U.S. citizen, smuggled items onto Air China flights at the direction of Chinese military officers at its U.N. mission and others while working as a counter agent at John F. Kennedy International Airport. China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday criticized the Lin case. It said U.S. accusations concerning diplomatic personnel “have ulterior motives.” REUTERS

The U.N. Security Council strongly on Tuesday condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launches, saying they contributed to Pyongyang’s development of nuclear weapons capability. North Korea fired three ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday, the South Korean and U.S. militaries said, as the leaders of the Group of 20 major economies held a summit in China, the North’s main diplo-
matic ally. “The members of the Security Council deplore all Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ballistic missile activities, including these launches,” the U.N. body said in a statement, using North Korea’s official name. “Such activities contribute to [North Korea’s] development of nuclear weapons delivery systems and increase tension.” Earlier, the United States called for action to enforce Security Council resolutions on North Korea prohibiting ballistic missile-related activities. “The Security Council must remain unequivocal and united in the condemnation of these tests and we must take action to enforce the words we

put on paper, to enforce our resolutions,” said U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, after a Security Council meeting. Power, who spoke along with her Japanese and South Korean counterparts, refrained from elaborating on what fur-
ther action the Security Council could take. Hahn Choong Hee, South Korea’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said Pyongyang was spending “a considerable amount” of its resources in developing weapons of mass destruction while sacrificing the living conditions of North Koreans. Monday’s missile launches were the latest in a series by North Korea this year in violation of Security Council resolutions that were supported by China banning ballistic missile-related activities by Pyongyang. North Korea rejects the ban as infringing its sovereign right to pursue a space program and self defense. REUTERS

ITT to shut flagship institutes, thousands of students to be affected ITT Educational Services Inc. said it would shut its flagship ITT Technical Institutes, following a U.S. Department of Education order, affecting thousands of students and employees. ITT’s move is the latest blow to the over $20 billion U.S. for-profit education industry, which has come under fire from the government in the past couple of years for its poor track record in helping students find employment. Shutting the institutes will affect more than 8,000 employees and hundreds of thousands of students and alumni, ITT said on Tuesday. The New York Stock Exchange said it would immediately suspend trading in ITT’s shares and delist the company.

company had 40,000 students at its ITT Technical Institute and Daniel Webster College locations as of June 30. U.S. for-profit education providers have struggled to attract students since a 2010 government crackdown revealed high student debt loads, low graduation rates and poor employability of graduates. In April last year, Corinthian Colleges Inc. abruptly closed 28 schools, leaving 16,000 students without classes amid federal and state investigations. The company, which filed for bankruptcy the following month, was being investigated for allegations of misleading students and investors about its finances and job placement rates. REUTERS

times, like Idris Elba or Gillian Anderson. These suggestions have been duly noted. Which is why they just offered $150 million to present 007 Daniel Craig to do it at least two more times. Their intransigence is matched only by the actor himself, with both sides engaged in an apparent stubborn-off. Not long ago Craig — who’s so gung-ho about the role he said he’d rather “slash” his wrists than do it again, and spent “Spectre” looking like he was steeling himself for an upcoming rectal exam — was offered $100 million, which he turned down. Maybe he can get them up to $200 million? Would $500 million coax him away from a life doing theater, making noble indies about sand or just hanging with cool wife Rachel Weisz?
And would a haul big enough to fill a money bin be enough to make him take the franchise as seriously as he did when he started — when the idea of a dour, anguished and decidedly less sexist 007 still seemed fresh? In any case, get on the trolley, Bond execs: If this were Marvel, it would’ve replaced Craig, now 48, with a teenager two years ago.
Kanye West wants Saint Pablo to be “internet-proof” Kanye West brought his ridiculously awesome flying stage to the Boston show of his Saint Pablo tour last weekend, and it was even cooler than it sounds, which is to say: seriously, unbelievably, crazy cool. great year to be a Kanye West fan, he said, so the artist was just keeping his comments “internet proof” out of respect for his fans. “Y’all get a free year” from defending him, he jokingly told the crowd. West did take one major break to address the crowd during an midsong interlude during “Runaway,” in which he shared some folk wisdom with the crowd that likely had a familiar ring to some of the more devoted parishioners of the Church of Yeezus. “The media, from when you’re a little ass kid, tells you not to love yourself,” West said.
“They take something out of you and try to sell it back to you, like that Benz you buy yourself out of college. Or that townhouse. Something that you’ve been fighting for your entire life and it was taken from you as a child, that you always had inside of you. And that’s self-love.” Then, with his voice autotuned to the looping piano accompaniment, Kanye started to sing. “They teach you not to love yourself, but if you don’t love yourself how can you love someone?” he sang. “That’s why I love you so much, ’cuz everybody knows I love me so much.”
Lena Dunham causes more commotion with resurfaced racist tweets Like a train wreck you can’t turn away from, Lena Dunham is back on blast with racist tweets from 2010 and 2011 that were resurfaced and are spreading like wildfire. For the 30-year-old actress, the backlash must feel routine after she found herself apologizing just days ago following an interview with Amy Schumer. During the seg-

ment, Dunham claimed Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. chose to avert his male gaze from her presence at the Met Gala because she was sporting a tuxedo and a bow tie. It wasn’t long before swarms of Twitter users criticized the self-proclaimed feminist for her narcissism and sexualization of the black male body.

She later apologized for the statements, which she attributed to her own insecurity as a plus-sized woman among a room of supermodels. This week, in a not-soshocking series of events, the star’s digital past has come back to haunt her with a series of racially insensitive tweets from 2010 and 2011 surfacing. The tweets include

one from 2011 in which she wrote, “An uncool thought to have: ‘Is that guy walking in the dark behind me a rapist? Never mind, he’s Asian.’” Outraged Twitter users are demanding an apology — some telling her to delete her account — and if the past speaks for itself, Dunham’s next move is on its way.

Aaron Paul likes it dark The “Breaking Bad” alum is stoked that “The 9th Life of Louis Drax” is a twisted movie about a kid. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
It’s not easy talking to Aaron Paul about “The 9th Life of Louis Drax.” A kind of fantasy-horrorthriller-noir, it concerns a young, accident-prone boy (Aiden Longworth) who falls off a cliff in the opening scene, survives, then tries to unravel how he got there. The “Breaking Bad” star plays Peter, his adoptive father, who’s mostly seen in flashbacks, who is seen as either an emotionally abusive husband to Louis’ mother (Sarah Gadon) or a loving, doting dad to Louis. We can’t say any more, because to say more is to spoiler a movie with a lot of twists. “Louis Drax” was written by the actor Max Minghella. Did you know him before? I’m a huge fan of him as an actor. When I read a script, I like to know nothing about

them going in. I’ll just open up a script and start reading. With this, I opened it up on my phone, thinking, “I’ll just read the first five pages, to see how the writing is.” And then I read the whole thing, on my phone. I was like, “Who wrote this?!” And then I saw his name, and was like, ‘That guy can write, too? What an a—hole!’ [Laughs] He’s a great actor, a good-looking kid and an incredible writer.
Aaron Paul plays a man who may or may not have had a hand in the near-fatal accident of an imaginative boy (Adrien Longworth) in “The 9th Life of Louis Drax,” now in theaters. SUMMIT PREMIERE
It’s hard to talk about your character, because there are major spoilers and we only see him in flashbacks. How do you describe him without ruining the movie? You see him from different perspectives. You see him being this aggressive, frustrated husband [to wife Natalie]. You also see him as a loving, nurturing, passionate father [to Louis]. You’re not sure which is his true side, or what side you’re going to see next. You also get to play a father, which you’ve done a few times before. I love kids. It was important to me to spend a lot of time with Aiden. It’s great to have kids on set. I love coming-of-age stories, so I love watching movies about kids in that age group — just looking at the world with a different set of eyes. I remember being that age. Films like “The Goonies” or “Stand by Me” were the reason I’m doing what I’m doing. I love seeing things like “Stranger Things” making a huge splash in this industry. And like “Stand by Me,” this is an R-rated movie, but for kids, which is an neat genre. It’s great! They’re not afraid to really go there.

Natasha Lyonne is not the kind of actress you just bombard with questions. She speaks her mind, and is excited if you go along with her. We’re supposed to talk about “Antibirth,” an indie horror film that she produced, in which she plays Lou, a stoner in a nowhere town filled with drug-addled former Marines who wakes up after a wild party knocked-up — not with a baby but with some unidentified hell beast. But the “Orange is the New Black” performer and I wind up talking about whatever, starting with my assumption that she’s currently in Los Angeles. (She’s not.)

Who cares? I spent so much of my teenage years on the debate of New York versus Los Angeles and how awful it is and how integrity can only live in New York, and so forth. Now, I just feel like I’m too old to have that conversation again.
Brooklyn. Especially with the L train. Let’s be honest about the L train: Is it my imagination or is a giant catastrophe coming our way? Everybody knows it. I don’t like the fact that they know the train needs handled in a major way.
You’re talking millions of rides before they get to the actual construction. And they already know the train is so problematic. That to me spells eerie, impending catastrophe. I don’t like it. I would strongly advise people to reroute prematurely. I know it’s an inconvenience, but I don’t trust the L train. It’s another thing New Yorkers can complain about. It’s a great city to just be mean. It’s great. The anonymity and vitriol and belligerent nonsense cannot be beat. [Laughs] The consequence-free nature of giving somebody a shoulder because they’re carrying their umbrella too low on a crowded street — where else in the world can you get that kind of excitement? That’s why everyone in New York is so great. We’re a very happy people, because we’re constantly dealing with our angst.

Canadian electronic duo MSTRKRFT Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P are geared up for a North American tour in support of their latest full-length release, “Operator, which came out in July from Last Gang Records. The musicians — who hit the scene in the 2006 with “The Looks, a chip off Keller’s other band, Death From Above 1979— started to work away at the album in 2013, eventually delivering what we kept hearing was a raw, “military-inspired project. However, according to the guys, you
shouldn’t always believe what you read. Now about this militarythemed album ‌ Jesse: I know everyone’s been drawing this military theme, but that’s really just the cover art. But that concept had to come from somewhere. Jesse: The military concept is much more human than it appears. Military guys would refer to themselves as “operators,â€? and this is our interpretation. It appears to us that the term “operatorâ€? was something they would use to detach themselves from what they’re doing, focus on the work rather than the meaning behind it. And I can’t f—g blame them. Kind of like tunnel vision. Jesse: Yes and no —

it’s like accepting and embracing this idea of piloting equipment, but the equipment is really doing the work. There’s an element to it where the gear does things that we didn’t expect or command. There’s an acceptance from us that the machines are a big part of what’s happening. There are no human sounds we made; it’s all machines. What do you call us — synthesists? I hate when dance-music artists are called producers. That’s a defined role; it doesn’t need to be redefined for the purpose of music. Synthesists? Is that going to be your professional title going forward? Jesse: As of this interview. Al: Yeah, that’s what we’re going to write as our occupations when we cross the border.

Maybe you’re finally single. Maybe you’re regrettably single. Maybe you’re strategically single, as usual, thank you very much. Whatever the case, gentlemen, you have one thing in common: Your bachelor pad could likely use a little work. As fall arrives and nesting season begins, we caught up with Patty Frischman and Tanhya Schimel — founders of SimplyHome2, a NYC-
The kitchen Even men who know their way around the kitchen tend to be unprepared for company. “What we find in most men’s bachelor kitchens is the bare minimum— often times, they have a single pot and pan,” says Frischman. “The first thing we do is fill the cabinets with a variety of sizes of cookware so they can prepare a real meal. It’s also nice to
have a cheese board and a couple of other serving dishes and trays.” Honorable mention: a set of legit knives, just in case Whole Foods stops selling prechopped veggies.
The bedroom Gentleman, those flannel sheets belong at camp, not on your grown-man bed. “Fresh white linens with or without a border are essential to every man’s master bedroom,” says Schimel. “A cozy blanket at the end of the bed is a nice touch as well.”
The living room Your Xbox is important, and no one is questioning its place in your life or your living room. But you need to give it — and all of its friends — a proper home. “A nice modern media console to house your television, cables and wires is an essential,” says Schimel. “We also love an area rug, and decorative pillows and a throw can really bring the room together.” See, it looks like a grownup lives here. Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. To find out more and schedule your free screening appointment, simply call 800-879-7343

When Terry Collins was hired in 2011 to be the Mets’ manager, it was because he had an extensive background in player development. The Mets were mostly a young team in rebuilding mode then, looking to nurture some promising prospects. Now, the Mets are in the thick of the playoff hunt, but Collins’ aptitude with youngsters has been needed more than ever. Almost every Met that started on opening day has dealt with the injury bug at some point this year. David Wright, Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares have missed the majority of the season, and now Neil Walker has been ruled out for the year due to a back injury. Veterans like Kelly Johnson and James Loney have stepped up in their stead, and the Mets have also gotten contributions from the likes of Michael Conforto. Conforto struggled for the bulk of his rookie season, but he’s shown glimmers of hope while filling in at center
field. On Sunday night, Conforto laid out to make a spectacular catch while playing center in a crucial 5-1 win over Washington. “I had to go in there and take the risk,” he explained to reporters after the game. That sentiment won the approval of his manager. “For a guy that hasn’t played in center field, [diving for that ball] is taking a huge chance,” Collins said of Conforto. “It’s credit to his makeup and the fact that he’s not afraid to make a play.” Then there’s the mess that is the Mets’ current rotation. Matt Harvey has been on the shelf since July, and now Steven Matz and Jacob deGrom are expected to miss multiple starts in September. That’s forced Triple-A starters Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman to come up earlier than expected to try and fill in. So far they have performed admirably. Lugo is 3-1 in four starts with a 2.23 ERA. Sunday’s win, in which he allowed only one run on six hits in seven innings, was his best effort to date. With an eye on the postseason, Lugo told reporters after the game, “It’s a little easier when
there’s something on the line. It keeps you focused.” Gsellman is 2-1 with a 2.87 ERA in his three appearances (two starts, 15.2 IP), and is happy to be a part of the big league club. “Definitely fun baseball to be a part of this,” Gsellman said. “Hopefully we can pull it out.” Collins explained to reporters recently why he’s confident his young players will continue to produce. “I credit the kind of people we have here,” Collins said. “Our pitching coaches, minor league staff do a great job. We made so many trades last year that we lost quality pitching, but we still had some coming. We asked them to step up and they stepped up.” When you talk to your minor league staff in spring training…we go over who the prospects are and how far they are away. Now, all of a sudden I can put a face to the name. During the season, you have a good feel because you go on what you’ve heard in the past.” The Mets were a game behind the Cardinals and Giants in the NL Wild Card chase as of Tuesday afternoon.

On the morning after she made history by winning her 308th career Grand Slam singles match, Serena Williams didn’t sleep in at her hotel. Instead, the soon-tobe 35-year-old was the first one on the practice courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, preparing for a run toward her 23rd Grand Slam title. Williams, the top seed, will meet No. 5 Simona Halep in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Arthur Ashe Stadium. “Serena Williams right now is playing for Grand Slam titles, she’s playing to make history, she’s playing to be No. 1,” sixtime U.S. Open champion Chris Evert said Tuesday on ESPN. As usual, Serena is the last American standing — man or woman — after her sister Venus Williams was eliminated in three sets on Monday by Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Pliskova will meet Croatia’s Ana Konjuh in Wednesday’s daytime quarterfinal, with the winner to meet the Serena-Halep
survivor in the semifinals on Thursday evening. Serena appears to be on a collision course with No. 2 Angelique Kerber, which would be their third Grand Slam final of 2016. Kerber beat Serena to win the Australian Open in January, while Serena earned a measure of revenge in the Wimbledon final. Kerber on Tuesday cruised past No. 7 Roberta Vinci, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Vinci, of course, stunned the tennis world with her Buster Douglaslike upset of Serena in last year’s semifinals. “It’s always difficult to play against Roberta,” said Kerber, who was down 4-5 in the opening set before winning the final nine games. “She’s a great player and she played so well last year. I’m so happy to win it in two sets and to reach the semifinals again, it means a lot to me.” Serena must reach the final to have a chance of retaining her No. 1 world ranking. If Kerber makes the final, Williams will have to win the title to hold on to the top spot. “That’s a huge motivation [for Williams] because she thrives on these types of scenarios,” Patrick McEnroe said on ESPN. “It’s not a given that she’s going to win these [matches].” With every match win, Serena continues to make history.
Her 308th career Grand Slam win moved her past five-time Open champion Roger Federer (307), who did not enter the Open while resting his ailing knee. Martina Navratilova won 306 major matches en route to 18 career Grand Slam titles. “I think it’s really exciting,” Serena said. “I just think winning 308 matches in general is pretty awesome. For that to be in a Grand Slam is pretty cool.” Nike recently dubbed Serena “the greatest female athlete ever” and then removed the qualifier in the ad, saying “Greatest. Athlete. Ever.” Asked is she could see herself playing another sport, Williams said, “Not really. I definitely want to stick to tennis right now. But, no, I never really thought about it.” As for Kerber, she is not allowing herself to think ahead to a potential third Grand Slam final meeting with Serena. “I’m still trying to stay focused on match to match and when I came here I was telling myself to play round to round and going out to win my matches,” Kerber said. Kerber is playing in the shadow of one of the greatest of all time in fellow German Steffi Graf, who for the moment remains tied with Serena at 22 Open-era titles.
