NEW YORK METS SIGN EX-NFL PLAYER TIM TEBOW

1

According to reports from Mets insiders like James Wagner, who covers the Mets for the New York Times, Tim Tebow — a former Heisman-winning football player who was cut by the Patriots, Jets and Eagles — signed for MLB’s largest free-agent signing bonus of $100,000 Thursday when he inked a minor league deal with the team. He is also looking to have his cake and eat it too. The Mets reportedly are allowing Tebow to continue to work his “day job” as a college football analyst for SEC Network. And the athlete’s website (which links to TDAutographs) is selling not only memorabilia from Tebow’s storied college career — and less storied NFL one — it is also selling signed autographed baseball bats. He hasn’t even taken a professional swing yet. EVAN MACY

ONE STUDENT DEAD, ONE HURT IN TEXAS SCHOOL SHOOTING

2

A female student shot and wounded a fellow student at Alpine High School in West Texas on Thursday and then died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound, news outlets in the town reported, quoting the county sheriff. The shootings prompted an evacuation of the high school, and other schools were put on lockdown in the remote town of about 6,000 people some 200 miles southeast of El Paso in Brewster County, officials said. “This community did not expect this. We don’t want this and we can’t explain it yet,” Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said in an interview with KWES-TV. The names and ages of the two students have not yet been released, Dodson said. The student who survived, “had run out into the street and some local people picked her up and took her to the hospital,” he said. REUTERS

WELLS FARGO WILL PAY $190M TO SETTLE CUSTOMER FRAUD CASE

Wells Fargo will pay $185 million in penalties and $5 million to customers that regulators say were pushed into fee-generating accounts that they never requested, officials said Thursday. “Wells Fargo reached these agreements consistent with our commitment to customers and in the interest of putting this matter behind us,” the bank said of its settlement with California prosecutors and federal regulators. “We regret and take responsibility for any instances where customers may have received a product that they did not request,” it added. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will receive $100 million of the total penalties — the largest fine levied by the agency, which was conceived after the 2008 financial crisis. REUTERS

Franklin Park’s new zoo encourages kids to play with nature The new Children’s Zoo mimics four types of ecosystems and lets kids gain hands-on knowledge. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us

Kids today have a “nature deficit disorder,” asserts John Linehan, president and CEO of Zoo New England, and he hopes that the new Children’s Zoo at Franklin Park can provide the cure. “Kids don’t get out and play in nature the way they used to,” Linehan said. “When I was a kid, I spent hours and hours in the woods, and nowadays that’s not the case for way too many kids. We’re trying to address that and demystify nature.” Called Nature’s Neighborhoods, the zoo’s new children’s exhibit mimics four types of ecosystems —woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and thicket — and invites visitors to learn about those areas and the animals that in-

habit them through play. The project, unveiled in 2014, involved demolishing the old Children’s Zoo and spending $7.2 million on the new exhibit. “We have fantastic programs for teens at the zoo, but it became clear to us that we need to start earlier than when they’re teens to get kids understanding nature and really appreciating it and all the incredible biodiversity we share this planet with,” Linehan said. The exhibit is geared toward kids ages 3 to 8, with a focus on interactive elements. Kids are welcome to climb up into an

eagle’s nest build around an oak tree, offering binoculars and a bird’s-eye view of the Children’s Zoo area. There’s also a “prairie dog pop-up” that features glass domes kids can crawl into to be surrounded by the grassland animals. “You have to crawl in on your hands and knees, so you feel like you’re underground,” Linehan said. “They’re getting a little taste of what it’s like to be a prairie dog.” Linehan said he’s already heard from parents who can see how much their kids enjoys all the space to run and play. “From one parent, I

heard how their kids get bored in the regular zoo, but this is so interactive that it really got them engaged at a much deeper level,” he said. Each area in the zoo is referred to as a neighborhood because that helps kids understand how an ecosystem functions, Linehan said. Plus, it’s easy for them, especially those who grow up in a city, to understand what a neighborhood is. And just like a city neighborhood, the new Children’s Zoo isn’t done developing. Zoo officials are still adding in more animals like munchak, a type of small deer that will live with the pandas next to a bamboo climbing interactive for the kids. The nature outside of the zoo’s walls has adapted to the new exhibit as well — Linehan said wild dragonflies have started laying eggs in the turtle pond. “That adds even another level, and we’re trying to get interpretive signage out there so kids notice those little things, too,” he said. “It’s just going to get better.”

Boston FD says a smoke detector, two exits are your ‘best roommates evah’ The city is launching a PSA aimed at educating college students to make sure their apartments are up to fire codes. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

Is your new apartment up to Boston’s fire safety codes? The city is launching a public service campaign this month in conjunction with the new school year, advising students that their “best roommates evah” are smoke alarms and having “two ways out” of their apartments. The slogan is slightly confusing — and delivered in a pretty hilarious Bostonian monotone by city firefighters that is definitely worth a watch — but also offers some

pretty smart advice: The firefighters featured in video all responded to the fatal Allston fire that killed Boston University senior Binland Lee in 2013. Many, including Lee’s family, who later filed a lawsuit against her land-

lord in 2014, blamed the student’s death on a lack of exits and a faulty smoke detector system. In the proud tradition of previous cultural nods like “Be Wicked Safe,” signs throughout Boston are also sporting the slo-

gan, delivered in the Bostonian patois. Want to make sure your new pad is up to code, or have a question? You can check out the City of Boston’s Inspectional Services page, or contact 617-6355300.

Boston man pleads guilty to sex trafficking A Boston man pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in U.S. District Court after prosecutors said that he prostituted a woman in hotels in Maine, Massachusetts and New York. Akil J. DeCoteau, 28, asked a woman to work for him as a prostitute in January 2014, investigators said. In exchange, he promised to take care of her, providing her with food and shelter, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The woman had no place to live at that time and agreed. DeCoteau then took her to Westbrook, Maine, where he rented a room and posted an advertisement online offering sex with her for a fee, investigators said. DeCoteau charged men between $100 and $200 to have sex with her and kept all of the money, officials said. DeCoteau continued to prostitute the woman in hotels in Maine, Massachusetts and New York

over the course of two weeks, posting ads and keeping the money in all instances. In federal court in Boston on Wednesday, DeCoteau pleaded guilty to one count of transportation of an individual with intent to engage in prostitution and one count of conspiracy to transport an individual for prostitution. DeCoteau’s co-defendant, Kwamaine Wells, pleaded guilty to related charges last week and is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 1. U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper scheduled DeCoteau’s sentencing for Nov. 30. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Ice skating isn’t just for the Frog Pond anymore. This winter, City Hall Plaza will be home to New England’s first customdesigned outdoor skating path, according to the city. As part of ongoing efforts to enhance City Hall Plaza, Mayor Marty Walsh announced that the skating path and a “Europeaninspired holiday shopping market” will adorn the public space thanks to a partnership with the Boston Garden Development Corporation. The city picked BGDC’s bid earlier this year — the corporation is a subsidiary of Delaware North Companies, the owner and operator of TD Garden — and officially announced the signing of a three-year contract. “This endeavor is the beginning of a joint venture that will help transform the plaza into a year-round destination, inviting the people of Boston to see the plaza come to life in new and exciting ways,” Walsh said in a statement.

The previous bid included plans for a Ferris wheel. This week’s announcement made no mention of any towering rides, but noted that the plaza will have different features for different seasons. The skating path and market are expected to open after Thanksgiving. The path, which will be open to skaters of all ages, will be nearly 11,000 gross square feet and stay open through February 2017. At the market, visitors can expect to “experience seasonal delicacies and interactive attractions in a celebratory winter atmosphere,” according to a statement. A mix of local and international vendors along with food and beverage offerings in “individual chalets” will comprise the marketplace, which will continue through New Year’s Day 2017.

“City Hall Plaza is the heart of the city, and we share Mayor Walsh’s vision to provide a welcoming, enticing communal space that better serves the residents and visitors of Boston,” said Charlie Jacobs, CEO for Delaware North’s Boston Holdings, in a statement. “Our team is actively working to create an engaging winter experience for the plaza as well as unique activations for every season.” In the meantime, BGDC will be installing shaded picnic tables on City Hall Plaza to provide gathering spots for commuters and visitors in the coming weeks. Delaware North will also join Walsh and the Main Streets Foundation to sponsor the “Beer Garden on Bricks” programming in the future, a social event on the plaza that the city started this past summer.

BRIEFS Newton man indicted for fatal Sweet Tomatoes crash A grand jury indicted a Newton man Wednesday on two counts of motor vehicle homicide for an accident in which an SUV crashed into the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in March, killing two people and injuring several others. Officials said that Bradford Casler, 55, was driving a Volkswagen Touareg SUV down Chestnut Street in Newton at about 6 p.m. on March 1 when the vehicle crossed over Washington Street and collided with several cars before slamming through the front of Sweet Tomatoes. Gregory D. Morin, 32, of Newton, and Eleanor Miele, 57, of Watertown, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police, FBI spend second day digging for clues to missing California student The work has yet not uncovered the body of Kristin Smart, 19, who police believe could be buried on a grassy hillside at California Polytechnic State University, 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Police and FBI agents spent a second day on Thursday digging at the edge of a California university campus for the remains of a student who went missing 20 years ago while walking to her dormitory. A spokesman for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office told the local San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper that some “items of interest” had been recovered during the dig, without elaborating. The sheriff’s office has said that new information in the cold case has led them to believe that Smart’s remains could be found on the hill, below a 50-foot concrete letter “P” marking the school. The excavation project has drawn new interest to the case, which is

unsolved two decades after the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman’s May 25, 1996 disappearance. Smart had left an offcampus party at about 2 a.m. that morning accompanied by two classmates who believed she should not walk home alone. The group was joined along the way by fellow student Paul Flores. After they split up on campus, Flores was alone with Smart not far from her Muir Hall dorm. He has told police that he parted company with her there. Flores was the last person to see Smart alive, according to authorities. The San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper reported that after Smart was reported missing by

fellow dorm resident, cadaver dogs homed in on Flores’ room, specifically the mattress of his bed. Flores was questioned by police in June 1996 and has been called a person of interest in the case but has not been arrested or charged. The attorney who formerly represented Flores in the case no longer represents him, according to his office. It was not immediately clear if Flores has retained a new lawyer. Smart’s parents sued Flores and the university for wrongful death, but that lawsuit remains on hold because police records have been sealed during the criminal investigation. “We are mindful that with or without the hoped-for results from this week’s efforts, we are now on a path that will bring our family peace and comfort,” the Smarts wrote in a statement released to the Tribune. Delays in the investigation of Smart’s disappearance prompted legislation in California requiring colleges and universities to share information about missing students more quickly with offcampus authorities. BRIEF Two North Carolina men arrested over alleged hack of CIA chief Two North Carolina men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly hacking several senior U.S. government officials as part of a group called “Crackas With Attitude,” according to documents filed in federal court on Thursday. Reuters and other media outlets have reported that hackers who broke into CIA Director John Brennan’s personal account in 2015 called themselves by that name. Andrew Otto Boggs, 22,

of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and Justin Gray Liverman, 24, of Morehead City, North Carolina, have been charged with their involvement in the group, though court papers do not name the senior government officials they targeted. The complaint did not list the names of lawyers for the defendants and it was not immediately possible to contact the two men. Other members of Boggs and Liverman’s conspiracy are two 17-year-old males living in the United Kingdom who remain nameless in court documents.

British police in February arrested a then-16-year-old boy in relation to the alleged hacks. According to the court complaint, the group allegedly gained access to personal accounts of senior U.S. government officials and their family members and posted derogatory information obtained through those accounts on the internet. On October 21, 2015, shortly after the hack into Brennan’s account became public, the CIA called the breach “a crime and the Brennan family is the victim.” REUTERS

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said he was against the Iraq war all along despite telling radio interviewer Howard Stern in 2002 that he favored it. Trump used the start of a speech about education at a charter school in Cleveland to push back at Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s statement that his position on Iraq is pretty much like her own: She voted for the 2003 war as a senator from New York but has since disavowed the vote. At an NBC forum on Wednesday night, Clinton pointed to a September 2002 interview Trump gave to radio

host Howard Stern to say that Trump had supported the war. Trump had said “Yeah, I guess so,” when asked about a potential conflict in Iraq. Various fact-checkers have cited this interview to debunk Trump’s statement that he was

always against the war. In Cleveland, Trump cited a Jan. 28, 2003, interview he did with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto to say he was skeptical. In that interview, Trump said: “I think the Iraqi situation is a problem. And I think the economy is a much

bigger problem as far as the president is concerned.” He said in his Cleveland remarks that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq had left a power void filled by Islamic State militants. “But I was opposed to that war from the beginning, long before my interview with Howard Stern,” Trump said. He also cited what he said was a March 25, 2003, interview. “Just days after the war started, I was quoted as saying the war is a mess,” Trump said, calling it “more evidence that I had opposed the war from the start.” REUTERS

BURN, BABY, BURN

Everyone knows, in political terms, Donald Trump is a flamethrower. He unleashes attacks without hesitation. He leaps into brawls he should avoid. And even when he is definitively wrong, he fights relentlessly to prove he is right. Now that I think of it, he is a lot like my college girlfriend. Nonetheless, all of that is part of how he won the Republican nomination. Here is another: He answered concerns about the longrange viability of his campaign by insisting he would become more measured, more scripted and more presidential. But that’s not going to happen anytime soon. His campaign shakeup this week make it stunningly clear, what we have seen so far has been the nice part of the race. Trump has now stacked the top of his team with street fighters; people who will throw so many blistering accusations at Hillary Clinton she may long for the good old

days when the candidate merely called her a liar. Why did Trump go this direction? Because as much as he may want to reach moderates and minorities with a kinder, gentler message, his success has always stemmed from attacking.

His real estate deals have been marked by hardball negotiations. His famous catch phrase was “You’re fired” not “I’m afraid we’ll have to let you go.” And his political rise flowed from incinerating his foes, not carefully sauteing their positions. And now Trump is betting his presidential dream that even more numerous, vicious and relentless attacks are his best course. He is likely dousing his last hopes for strong support from the Republican establishment; wagering instead that there are enough angry white voters to rise up and burn Camp Clinton to the ground. History and the polls say he is probably wrong, but they also said he’d never make it this far. So grab your extinguishers. I believe in the coming weeks we’ll see a firebombing unmatched in modern, presidential politics, with Trump betting somehow he’ll be the last one standing amid the ashes.

US drops corruption charges against former Virginia governor, wife Federal prosecutors on Thursday dropped corruption charges against former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and his wife, bringing to a close a case that had tarnished the once-rising star of the Republican Party. “After carefully considering the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the principles of federal prosecution, we have made the decision not to pursue the case further,â€? the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement. In June, the Supreme Court threw out McDonnell’s bribery convictions in a ruling that could make it tougher to prosecute politicians for corruption. The eight justices, liberals and conservatives alike, overturned McDonnell’s 2014 conviction, saying that his conduct fell short of a “official actâ€? in exchange for a bribe as required for conviction under federal bribery law. Jurors had convicted McDonnell for accepting $177,000 in luxury gifts and sweetheart loans to him and his wife Mau-

reen McDonnell from a wealthy Richmond businessman seeking to promote a dietary supplement. He was sentenced to two years in prison but remained free pending appeal. The case was a rare instance of the nation’s highest court reviewing a high-level public official’s criminal conviction. The court sent the case back to lower courts to determine if there was sufficient evidence for a jury to convict McDonnell, which

had kept alive the possibility of a new trial. McDonnell served as governor from 2010 to 2014 and once was considered as a possible vice presidential candidate. His wife was convicted in a separate trial and given a one-year sentence but remained free while pursuing a separate appeal. The Supreme Court ruling effectively applied to Maureen McDonnell too, meaning that her conviction also had to be tossed out.

‘Spirit’ and soul Amos Lee goes for hometown pride with his latest album. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

It’s taken a good dozen years for singer-songwriter Amos Lee to embrace his Philadelphia soul roots as fully as he does on his new album, “Spirit, which dropped Aug. 19. “It does have a much more soulful direction, much more R&B, but that’s due to the instrumentation and arrangements, says Lee, speaking from his hometown (“My town, as he affectionately calls Philly). “The first record was more acoustic because of its elements: just me and an acoustic guitar and drums. I’m not a genre-fied writer. My favorite albums have a thread continuing through the songs

that pulls you through the record from start to finish — and that’s a sonic thread. That for me is what makes it a great listen all the way through. Steering “Spirit’s soul-infused sonic thread was Lee himself. After two career boosting albums produced by music veterans Joey Burns of Calexico (2011’s “Mission Bell, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and spun off a hit single with “Windows Are Rolled Down), and Jay Joyce (of Little Big Town, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant on 2013’s “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song), the 39-year-old felt confident taking the helm as producer. “My role was more of facilitating people and bringing together the right musicians to elevate the songs, he says. “This was so much a collective effort, a col-

laboration. Overall, being a producer meant choosing the musicians I wanted to work with without anyone in between us. Picking the right people focused the recording process on the songs. I really did my homework. Key in boosting Lee’s confidence in taking on the producer role was fashion designer John Varvatos, who signed Lee to his Varvatos Records, an imprint through Republic Records. “When I met with John the first time, I knew his clothes but Amos Lee released his sixth studio full-length in August. didn’t know the person. But from the first meeting and talking about this record, he was so supportive of me producing. There was no pressure and a lot of freedom; it was super encouraging. “But much of all this is thanks to my

old mentor Bruce Lundvall, he adds of the late Blue Note Records label head, who passed away in 2015 after a storied career working with artists like Willie Nelson, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon and Norah Jones. Lee’s previous recordings, five albums

in all, were all on Blue Note. “You can avoid a lot of problems if you take the time to tell how the vibe is when you meet someone, Lee continues. “Also, I try to pull from people I know. I’m a quick judge; I get a feeling and go with it.

“Sully

Director: Clint Eastwood Stars: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart Rating: PG-13 In “Sully,â€? Clint Eastwood takes a story that barely has enough meat for a short ďŹ lm, let alone a movie, and turns it into a movie. It’s a job well done — improbable yet eďŹƒcient, if not as much improbable and eďŹƒcient as the feat performed by the ďŹ lm’s hero, Chesley Sullenberger (played by Tom Hanks). On a cold January NYC morning in 2009, the seasoned commercial pilot saved a passenger plane by landing it in the Hudson River. There were no casualties, besides the aircraft and a handful of geese. And the whole ordeal lasted about two minutes — an hour and change if you count the eďŹƒcient rescue to get the 150 or so on board to dry land. What “Sullyâ€? isn’t, though, is simple. The shortest and most compact Eastwood ďŹ lm has ever directed is also arguably his most experimental, using a nonlinear structure to both bait us into staying interested and to explore the mind of someone who’d prefer to keep his thoughts to himself. The big event itself, presented as an

Now We Cater Tom Hanks is predictably spot-on as heroic pilot Chesley Sullenberger in Clint Eastwood’s “Sully. PROVIDED

IMAX spectacular, is wisely held o till the midway mark. The rest follows the investigation by ghoulish airline oďŹƒcials, who suggest Sullenberger and his tetchier co-pilot (Aaron Eckhart and his impressive ’stache) could have maybe own back to nearby LaGuardia, saving both the plane and the passengers. On the record, Sullenberger stands by his work; in private, he’s not so sure. This could have been padding. Instead it helps “Sullyâ€? become a study of how taciturn

man’s men — i.e., Eastwood protagonists — aren’t mere macho machines. Someone like Sullenberger — or “Unforgiven’s Will Munny, or even Dirty Harry — aren’t crying on the inside, per se, but they are wracked with doubt, hobbled by trauma. Sullenberger can’t sleep, and he’s deeply uncomfortable when people call him a hero or buy him a vodka cocktail at a rando Midtown Irish bar. He doesn’t want to talk about his feelings, of course, but they’re there. This is a tight movie,

with the rare fascinating courtroom climax and only one minor design aw (brief ashbacks to his youth that seem to serve no purpose). On top of that, it helps further complicate the public persona of its maker, a ďŹ gure who can say supportive things about Trump and make something as thoughtful as “Sully.â€? It’s a movie that unlocks his other movies, showing them all to be nuanced studies of tormented masculinity — yes, even “American Sniper.â€? MATT PRIGGE

Things to watch for as Pats visit Arizona

It’s officially Jimmy Garoppolo time. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

It’s officially that time of year when pigs fly — pigskin, to be exact. The NFL season is here, and that means the Patriots will set out with another Super Bowl on their minds, as they’ve done since basically the turn of the century. They’ll begin their 2016 journey in a place it ended two seasons ago with a fourth Super Bowl championship: Arizona. The Cardinals host the Patriots in a Sunday night showdown (8:30 p.m., NBC), pitting Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer and his high-powered offense against a Patriots defense thought by many to be one of the most talented in the league. But the story in this game — at least around New England — isn’t going to be so much what the Patriots defense does, but what the Patriots offense does … specifically, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo — who will make his first career NFL start. Garoppolo is slated to start the first four games of the Patriots season, as Tom Brady will serve a four-game suspension for the infamous Deflategate debacle. How Garoppolo holds up in those games is anybody’s guess, but Sunday night should certainly be the hardest test of them all — on the road against a Super Bowl contender, in prime time, for the first time in his career.

can 1Cardinals thank Arians

A few seasons ago, this would have been a rollover win for the Patriots. In 2012, the Cardinals ranked dead last in total yardage (263.1), and 31st in points per game (15.6). Bruce Arians then took over as head coach, and along with

Palmer, transformed the Cardinals. Last season they finished second in total yardage (399.3) and second in points per game (29.4). Arians was named AP Head Coach of the Year, his first with the Cardinals, but second of his career after the fill-in job he did in Indianapolis. He has plenty of history against the Patriots as offensive coordinator of the Steelers and Colts since 2007.

for 2Pray Jimmy G

You can point to offensive stars like Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson all you want, but the Cardinals were arguably a top-five defense last season, and there’s no reason to believe that can’t be the case again in 2016. They gave up an average of 321.7 yards per game last season, good for fifth best in the NFL. It’s pretty easy to see why. Players like Calais Campbell, Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu make them strong all over. Mathieu tore his ACL in Week 15 of the 2015 season and is still expected to start Sunday night. And the Cards only added to the defense this season by trading for some guy named Chandler Jones — the Patriots’ sack leader from 2015.

just Gronk 3Not and Edelman

Plenty of attention will be paid to Rob Gronkowski Sunday night, but don’t be surprised if he’s used to help block on the offensive line more often than usual. That could create a bigger offensive night for fellow tight end Martellus Bennett, who finished with seven catches for 62 yards in the preseason. Julian Edelman will always be a popular target, but Chris Hogan had 12 receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown during preseason play. The Patriots have plenty of receiving options.

Bradford may not have the mobility of Bridgewater, but he can be a decent game manager. His defense, fifth-best in the league by PPG allowed (18.9), will keep the team in every game. Add to this that the Vikings are 7-0 ATS in their last seven road games, and this spells a 1-0 start for Minnesota against the bottom-feeding Titans. The pick: Vikings -2

Minnesota Vikings (-2) at Tennessee Titans Minnesota’s season came to a heartbreaking end, a missed chip-shot field goal, in last year’s playoffs. The team had Super Bowl aspirations coming into training camp this year but that was seemingly derailed by a freak injury in training camp to Teddy Bridgewater. I am not so sure of that.
