NEW YORK METS SIGN EX-NFL PLAYER TIM TEBOW

1

According to reports from Mets insiders like James Wagner, who covers the Mets for the New York Times, Tim Tebow — a former Heisman-winning football player who was cut by the Patriots, Jets and Eagles — signed for MLB’s largest free-agent signing bonus of $100,000 Thursday when he inked a minor league deal with the team. He is also looking to have his cake and eat it too. The Mets reportedly are allowing Tebow to continue to work his “day job” as a college football analyst for SEC Network. And the athlete’s website (which links to TDAutographs) is selling not only memorabilia from Tebow’s storied college career — and less storied NFL one — it is also selling signed autographed baseball bats. He hasn’t even taken a professional swing yet. EVAN MACY

ONE STUDENT DEAD, ONE HURT IN TEXAS SCHOOL SHOOTING

2

A female student shot and wounded a fellow student at Alpine High School in West Texas on Thursday and then died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound, news outlets in the town reported, quoting the county sheriff. The shootings prompted an evacuation of the high school, and other schools were put on lockdown in the remote town of about 6,000 people some 200 miles southeast of El Paso in Brewster County, officials said. “This community did not expect this. We don’t want this and we can’t explain it yet,” Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said in an interview with KWES-TV. The names and ages of the two students have not yet been released, Dodson said. The student who survived, “had run out into the street and some local people picked her up and took her to the hospital,” he said. REUTERS

WELLS FARGO WILL PAY $190M TO SETTLE CUSTOMER FRAUD CASE

3

Wells Fargo will pay $185 million in penalties and $5 million to customers that regulators say were pushed into fee-generating accounts that they never requested, officials said Thursday. “Wells Fargo reached these agreements consistent with our commitment to customers and in the interest of putting this matter behind us,” the bank said of its settlement with California prosecutors and federal regulators. “We regret and take responsibility for any instances where customers may have received a product that they did not request,” it added. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will receive $100 million of the total penalties — the largest fine levied by the agency, which was conceived after the 2008 financial crisis. REUTERS

15 years after 9/11: Lower Manhattan reinvented Residents say the area is more family-friendly and offers expanded retail options. LEN MANIACE @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Dr. Dina Anderson remembers downtown’s deserted and sometimes scary streets from visits to her favorite collegeera music venue, the legendary, now-defunct Wetlands Preserve on Hudson Street. Downtown was daring then; now it’s home for Anderson and her two children, Niko, 7, and Alia, 6. In fact, downtown sounded positively domestic as the 47-year-old dermatologist described the school-year routine that’s about to start. “I’ll walk the kids to P.S. 234 in Tribeca and then do my shopping at Whole Foods, next door.” The family lives at 8 Spruce St., the rippling steel-sheathed apartment tower designed by Frank Gehry. It’s one of the many new buildings and residential conversions that have trans-

formed downtown in the 15 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on Lower Manhattan. From that smoking wreckage a new downtown has arisen. Once so business-oriented that most shops shut at the end of the workday, downtown is becoming a 24-hour community. Most telling are the 60,000-plus people who make their home south of Chambers Street compared to 27,000 in 2001, according to the Downtown Alliance. “We didn’t just rebuild, we reinvented Lower Manhattan,” said Mitchell Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at New York University. With more people, comes everything that makes residential living possible. Food markets are multiplying in what was once a near food desert. There are now seven supermarkets and big gourmet shops are moving in. Eataly opened a downtown outlet last month in the Westfield World Trade Center and Le District, sometimes dubbed a French Eataly, opened spring 2015 in Battery Park City. A Dean & DeLu-

“We didn’t just rebuild, we reinvented Lower Manhattan.” Mitchell Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at NYU

ca is scheduled to open at 40 Wall St. by early 2017. And what better barometer of modern life in the U.S.A. is there than shopping? That American icon of the middle class, Target, is set to open at 255 Greenwich St. in October. The recently opened Westfield World Trade Center mall sits in what is perhaps the world’s most spectacular retail setting, the Santiago Calatravadesigned Oculus, which also houses PATH trains to New Jersey. Anderson was an early convert to downtown living, moving to Greenwich Village in 1995 after completing med school, then to Battery Park City in 2006, and to Spruce Street two years ago. “It’s more vibrant,

more exciting down here,” she said. A big draw for new families moving downtown are the many new public schools, Anderson said, adding that they’ve attracted many of her friends with families. There are now 21 public schools, up from seven in 2001. “The downtown schools are great. Uptown, many people send their children to private schools,” she said. Young families are not the only people attracted downtown. A 12-year resident of Battery Park City, Ruth Harris, 100, recently made her way to the New York Public Library branch on North End Avenue, which opened in 2010. Harris appreciates the growing vitality of downtown. There are more places to eat in Battery Park City and, she said, with the nearby Whole Foods it’s no longer necessary to travel all the way to Battery Park City’s south end for a supermarket. She lives in the north end. And Harris enjoys the influx of families. “To see the children, it just lifts your heart,” she said.

Lawsuit accuses home care agency of stiffing workers and mandating 24-hour shifts Over 1,000 workers could join suit against First Chinese Presbyterian Home Attendant. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Home care workers of the First Chinese Presbyterian Home Attendant Program are suing their employer, claiming they are over-worked and underpaid. About a dozen of the aggrieved workers gathered Thursday in Lower Manhattan for a rally to demand appropriate pay and fair hours as required by state and federal law. Advocates for the workers filed a class action lawsuit last week against their employer, First Chinese Presbyterian Community Affairs Home Attendant Corp. The company places trained caregivers with patients who need athome medical care and supervision. Manage-

ment didn’t respond to phone messages requesting a response to the workers’ complaints. Workers at the rally held signs in English and Spanish that read “No more 24-hour shifts” and “Paga las trabajadoras, ahora!” (pay your workers, now!). Using a microphone and Spanish translator, many workers

spoke of having to work 96 hours a week or more, and being paid for only half of those hours at less than minimum wage. The agency told them that they were not entitled to pay for more than 13 hours because caregivers who spend the night with clients can sleep, the workers said. But caregivers are

responsible for patients who often need care in the middle of the night, they said. As many as 1,500 workers could be entitled to damages, including pay owed since 2010, overtime wages, and interest, said Joann Lum, a spokeswoman for the National Mobilization Against Sweatshops, one

of the organizations supporting the workers. The lawsuit also maintains that First Chinese Presbyterian retaliated against caregivers who refused to work 24-hour shifts by giving them inadequate work hours. “The other outrage,” said Lum, “is that Medicaid approved these patients for constant care

— they acknowledged the necessity for 24-hour care — because they need to be turned in their bed, changed, watched if they have dementia. Most [workers] cannot sleep because they have to be alert to every little thing the patient might need.” Federal law that became effective last August stipulates that most home care workers are entitled to minimum wage and overtime pay protections. That includes people who provide home care services to the sick and elderly, such as nursing assistants, home health aides and hired companions. Lum pointed out that New York has a “double damages” rule which means that if a business violates minimumwage and overtime law, it must pay twice the amount owed, plus interest. Some First Chinese Presbyterian workers have been employed for 15 or more years, so the agency could be on the hook for millions of dollars, she said.

BRIEFS Nude man in surveillance video wanted for questioning in attempted rape The investigation of a reported rape attempt last month involving a naked man in Brooklyn turned up video of a potential suspect “comfortably walking in the nude” on the same street two weeks earlier, police said. A woman reported to police last week that she was assaulted near East 55th Street and Avenue J in Flatlands by a completely naked man as she was going home. She reported that he creeped up behind her, grabbed her by the neck, threw her to the ground and forcibly touched her. The woman was able to fend him off and flee without further harm. While collecting evidence, police discovered surveillance video dated Aug. 12 of a man with the same completely nude appearance as the attempted rapist. Police are seeking for questioning the man observed walking in the video. He who is described as being 25 to 30 years old, with a thick build, standing between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-9 inches tall. Anyone with information

about the man is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then entering TIP577. AMANDA MIKELBERG

Reports: Brooklyn student brings loaded gun on first day of school A 15-year-old student allegedly brought a loaded gun onto Brooklyn school grounds during the first day of classes. The student, who has been detained, was found with the gun at a metal detector scanning

station while walking into the Brooklyn School for Career Development on Clermont Avenue, according to ABC7. Pix11 described the weapon as a loaded .22-caliber firearm. The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. “This incident is deeply troubling, and we are working in close partnership with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation,” the Department of Education said in a statement to ABC7. “The NYPD immediately responded and safely confiscated the weapon. Safety always comes first and there is zero tolerance for weapons of any kind in schools.” No injuries were reported. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA

Coffee apps corner New York market Download Cups, Jolt or Moffee for ease and affordability. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Move over Hooch, the newest drinking club apps help New Yorkers get a buzz with coffee, not booze. A few entrepreneurs found ways to cash in on the explosive coffeemarket growth without having to clean any filters. Similar to drinks apps such as FirstCall and Hooch, which provide things like a free alcoholic beverage a day, or discounts with memberships (and now, buy-one-get-one with the FullGlass), the coffee apps provide in-app purchasing and discounting, package deals, free coffee, delivery and frequent caffeinator points.

Cups Cups came to New York in 2014. Founding partner Gilad Rotem said they piloted in Tel Aviv but had their sights set on the Big Apple with its 8 million people and above-average coffee consumption. “The pilot was good on a profit level,” Rotem said. “A little after launching in New York, we saw how quickly it was growing and big it was going to be.” When the startup landed in NYC they had about 30 participating coffeehouses sprinkled around downtown Manhattan and Williamsburg. They’ve grown to include 230-plus partnering cafes — approximately a 30 percent share of the independently owned coffeeserving establishments in New York City. “We call ourselves the second biggest coffee company in the city,” Rotem joked. Starbucks is the biggest, with 270 locations in the city. And Cups expects to have 300 participating coffee-houses by early 2017. In the past two years Cups has also launched in Philadelphia, San

ISTOCK

Francisco, Pittsburgh and Nashville. So, if you are a multiple-cup a day coffee lover, Cups might be for you. Cups works in two ways: You can download the app and present it at its partner cafes for 15 percent off your purchase; or you can do one of their many prepaid plans, with which you can buy a package of five ($11), 15 ($30) or unlimited cups of coffee ($90) for set prices that bring your average cup down to $2. Highlights: • Pay as you go and get 15 percent off any cafe beverage or food item with the app. • Packages for as low as $11 a month for coffee at any of more than 230 participating privately-owned cafes in New York City.

Jolt Coffee App Jolt Coffee App is the most like Hooch. It provides the glory of offering coffee completely for free at a cafe of the day on Wednesdays. But you can use it every day to pay for your cup: for a swifter transaction, enter your card information into the app and then pay directly from your phone, so you don’t have to pull out your wallet while you greedily grab your cup from the barista’s hands. What’s more, earn points with every purchase to a free coffee of your choice at any of its participating coffee houses in the city. Later this fall, Jolt will roll out its unlimited coffee plan, with which you can commit a certain dollar amount

and drink an unlimited amount from participating coffees. Jolt’s founding partner Aubrey Hodges says that the free app was intended to help support independently owned coffee shops. “We want to help people drink better coffee. It would bring a better quality of life, so we wanted to provide a tool that allows people to make it easier, faster and cheaper to drink good coffee.” Highlights: • Preload your card and pay with your app. • Drink a free cup every Wednesday at the participating cafe of the day. • Every seventh cup is on the house. • Coming in October: unlimited coffee with prepaid subscription.

Moffee Moffee is a brand-new app that offers good old-fashioned convenience. The app menu allows you to order any coffee, specialty cafe drink or smoothie your heart desires and have it delivered right to your office, classroom or dorm room still piping hot (or icy cold). The delivery is entirely free, and by paying ahead and saving your card info in the app you can order even when you are low on cash. Unlike the other startups, Moffee founder Daniel Botero actually does have a retail location, but it’s not street-facing. Custom coffee beverages are made on premises and then delivered to any location. Kind of like

Uber for lattes, a driver comes to your location pinpointed on a map. Botero is busy growing his business, and brewing coffee. Since launching a few months ago, Moffee has expanded their delivery territory to Pace University kids (who often order to their classrooms and dorms) as well as around the financial district for those who can’t stand burnt brew. Highlights: • Free delivery of gourmet cafe beverages and smoothies at the right temperature. • Select your coffee order from their in-app menu. • Keep your payment saved and pay without cash. • Your driver will come to your location on the map.

BRIEF New York to allow late-term abortions for health at-risk women New York will allow late-term abortions for women whose pregnancies endanger their health, a move that brings the state into federal compliance and ends decades of confusion faced by patients and providers of the procedure, state oďŹƒcials said. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued an opinion publicly on Thursday to clarify

that New Yorkers have all the protections aorded to women in the United States under the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade and are not beholden to the state’s more-restrictive abortion law. “Today’s opinion eliminates any ambiguity about the consistency of our state’s law with these federal constitutional rights and, as a result, removes an obstacle some New York women may encounter when trying to make their own reproductive health

choices,â€? Schneiderman said in a statement. The state will oďŹƒcially allow late-term abortions if the pregnant woman’s health is at risk or if the fetus is “nonviable,â€? according to the opinion. Existing New York law says abortion is a crime unless performed “under a reasonable belief that such is necessary to preserve (the pregnant woman’s) life,â€? or within the ďŹ rst 24 weeks of pregnancy.

The new opinion also assures reproductive health care providers operating in New York, such as Planned Parenthood, that “they may provide constitutionally protected reproductive health care services to women without fear of being complicit in a criminal act.â€? The opinion does not change the state’s penal code. It clariďŹ es the state’s interpretation of federal law and that the law overrides state rule. REUTERS

An Atlas 5 rocket blasted off from Florida on Thursday carrying a space probe on NASA’s first quest to collect samples from an asteroid and return them to Earth in hopes of learning more about the origins of life. The United Launch Alliance booster lifted off at 7:05 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Perched on top of the 19-story rocket was NASA’s robot explorer Osiris-Rex, built by Lockheed Martin to carry out the seven-year, $1 billion mission to and from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu. United Launch Alliance is a private partnership between Lockheed and Boeing The 3,300-pound solar-powered probe is expected to take two years to reach its destination, a dark, rocky mass roughly a third of a mile wide and shaped like a giant acorn orbiting the sun at roughly the same distance as Earth. Scientists believe

Bennu is covered with organic compounds dating back to the earliest days of the solar system. “You can think of these asteroids as literally prebiotic chemical factories that were producing building blocks of life 4.5 billion years ago, before Earth formed, before life started here,â€? NASA astrobiologist Daniel Glavin said before launch. Once it settles into orbit around Bennu in 2018, the Osiris-Rex probe will spend up to two more years mapping the asteroid’s surface and taking inventory of its chemical and mineral composition. Scientists will ultimately select a promising site to sample and command Osiris-Rex to fly close enough to Bennu so that the probe’s 11-foot-long robot arm can touch the asteroid’s surface. A sampling container will then release a swirl of nitrogen gas, which will stir up gravel and soil for collection. REUTERS

Chipotle settles sick customers’ claims, avoiding court battles The burrito chain’s strategy of resolving claims out of court, which has not previously been reported, shows it wants to avoid drawn-out public battles over foodborne illnesses that battered the company’s stock price and reputation. Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to financial settlements with more than 100 customers who fell ill after eating at its restaurants last year, lawyers for the consumers said, as it attempts to move on from a string of food-safety problems. Terms of Chipotle’s settlements with customers were confidential, lawyers representing them said

this week. Chipotle has been working to revive sales growth after outbreaks of E. coli, norovirus and salmonella linked to its restaurants sickened more than 500 people last year and drove away customers. On Tuesday, activist investor William Ackman disclosed that his hedge fund had purchased a 9.9 percent stake in the company, saying it was undervalued. When asked about reported settlements, Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said the company “does right by our customers and simply wanted to make things right for people who were affected by any of those incidents.” He did not disclose details of settlements. Chipotle’s use of outof-court settlements is similar to the way burger

chain Jack in the Box handled claims following a deadly E. coli outbreak in the 1990s, said Bill Marler, a lawyer for Marler Clark specializing in food-safety cases. He represented clients sickened in both incidents. Both fast-food companies also overhauled their food-safety practices and hired consultant Dave Theno to help. Marler said he had one claim over foodborne ill-

ness still to resolve with Chipotle after bringing the company about 100 individual cases related to last year’s outbreaks. The claims, settled over the last six months or so, involved people whose illnesses were verified by medical tests, Marler said. Most were never filed in courts. “The way that Chipotle has been handling the legitimate claims has been textbook appropriate,”

Marler said. “They’ve taken responsibility.” Resolving customers’ claims privately allows Chipotle to “try and move forward from a disappointing and embarrassing issue,” said Lonny Sweet, chief executive officer for The Connect Group, a marketing agency focused on food. “The last thing that they want is a battle in the courtroom over paying these people money because that keeps it in the news,” said Howard Penney, a managing director for research firm Hedgeye Risk Management, who follows Chipotle. After settling claims from some customers, Chipotle still faces a federal criminal probe into food-safety matters and a civil lawsuit over allegations it misled investors about its food-safety controls. BRIEF Curbs on excessive force proposed for Cleveland police Cleveland police would face new limits on the use of force under proposals issued on Thursday by a group charged with monitoring the city’s police department, after a U.S. Justice Department report highlighted abuses by some of its officers. The report came just weeks after Tamir Rice, aged 12, was shot and killed by a rookie Cleveland police officer in November 2014, triggering national outrage over another case involving a young AfricanAmerican who died at the hands of police. Rice was shot after a 911 caller reported someone waving a gun outside a city recreation center. Investigators later determined he had been in possession of a replica-type gun that shot pellets, not bullets. Changes proposed by the Cleveland Police Monitoring Team — a group of 17 national experts and community activists — include a requirement that officers use de-escalation tactics before resorting to force, such as creating distance from the threat involved. Police, FBI spend second day digging for clues to missing California student The work has yet not uncovered the body of Kristin Smart, 19, who police believe could be buried on a grassy hillside at California Polytechnic State University, 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Police and FBI agents spent a second day on Thursday digging at the edge of a California university campus for the remains of a student who went missing 20 years ago while walking to her dormitory. A spokesman for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office told the local San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper that some “items of interest” had been recovered during the dig, without elaborating. The sheriff’s office has said that new information in the cold case has led them to believe that Smart’s remains could be found on the hill, below a 50-foot concrete letter “P” marking the school. The excavation project has drawn new interest to the case, which is

Smart had left an offcampus party at about 2 a.m. that morning accompanied by two classmates who believed she should not walk home alone. The group was joined along the way by fellow student Paul Flores. After they split up on campus, Flores was alone with Smart not far from her Muir Hall dorm. He has told police that he parted company with her there. Flores was the last person to see Smart alive, according to authorities. Flores was questioned by police in June 1996 and has been called a person of interest in the case but has not been arrested or charged. The attorney who formerly represented Flores in the case no longer represents him, according to his office. It was not immediately clear if Flores has retained a new lawyer. Smart’s parents sued Flores and the university for wrongful death, but that lawsuit remains on hold because police records have been sealed during the criminal investigation. “We are mindful that with or without the hoped-for results from this week’s efforts, we are now on a path that will bring our family peace and comfort,” the Smarts wrote in a statement released to the Tribune. Delays in the investigation of Smart’s disappearance prompted legislation in California requiring colleges and universities to share information about missing students more quickly with offcampus authorities. BRIEF Two North Carolina men arrested over alleged hack of CIA chief Two North Carolina men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly hacking several senior U.S. government officials as part of a group called “Crackas With Attitude,” according to documents filed in federal court on Thursday. Reuters and other media outlets have reported that hackers who broke into CIA Director John Brennan’s personal account in 2015 called themselves by that name. Andrew Otto Boggs, 22,

of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and Justin Gray Liverman, 24, of Morehead City, North Carolina, have been charged with their involvement in the group, though court papers do not name the senior government officials they targeted. The complaint did not list the names of lawyers for the defendants and it was not immediately possible to contact the two men. Other members of Boggs and Liverman’s conspiracy are two 17-year-old males living in the United Kingdom who remain nameless in court documents.

British police in February arrested a then-16-year-old boy in relation to the alleged hacks. According to the court complaint, the group allegedly gained access to personal accounts of senior U.S. government officials and their family members and posted derogatory information obtained through those accounts on the internet. On October 21, 2015, shortly after the hack into Brennan’s account became public, the CIA called the breach “a crime and the Brennan family is the victim.” REUTERS

Trump says he was against Iraq war despite Howard Stern interview Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said he was against the Iraq war all along despite telling radio interviewer Howard Stern in 2002 that he favored it. Trump used the start of a speech about education at a charter school in Cleveland to push back at Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s statement that his position on Iraq is pretty much like her own: She voted for the 2003 war as a senator from New York but has since disavowed the vote. At an NBC forum on Wednesday night, Clinton pointed to a September 2002 interview Trump gave to radio

host Howard Stern to say that Trump had supported the war. Trump had said “Yeah, I guess so,” when asked about a potential conflict in Iraq. Various fact-checkers have cited this interview to debunk Trump’s statement that he was

always against the war. In Cleveland, Trump cited a Jan. 28, 2003, interview he did with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto to say he was skeptical. In that interview, Trump said: “I think the Iraqi situation is a problem. And I think the economy is a much

BRIEF Senators seek to block $1.15 billion US arms sale to Saudi Arabia Four U.S. senators introduced a joint resolution on Thursday seeking to block the U.S. sale of $1.15 billion of Abrams tanks and other military equipment to Saudi Arabia, citing issues including the conflict in Yemen. The measure was introduced by Republican Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee and Democrats Chris Murphy and Al Franken, the latest indication of strong disapproval of the deal among some U.S. lawmakers. “Selling $1.15 billion in tanks, guns, ammunition and more to a country with a poor human rights record embroiled in a bitter war is a recipe for disaster and an escalation of an ongoing arms race in the region,” Paul said in a statement. In August, 64 members of the House of Representatives signed a letter urging President Barack Obama to delay the sale. The Pentagon announced on Aug. 9 that the State Department had approved the potential sale of more than 130 Abrams battle tanks, 20 armored recovery vehicles and other equipment to Saudi Arabia. He also cited what he said was a March 25, 2003, interview. “Just days after the war started, I was quoted as saying the war is a mess,” Trump said, calling it “more evidence that I had opposed the war from the start.” REUTERS

operation Agency, which implements foreign arms sales, said that General Dynamics would be the principal contractor for the sale. Introducing the resolution, the senators cited the conflict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is leading a coalition in support of forces loyal to the exiled government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi who are trying to oust Iran-allied Houthi forces from the capital, Sanaa. Human rights groups have criticized the coalition’s air strikes because of the deaths of civilians. “Thousands of civilians are being killed, and terrorist groups inside the country, like al Qaeda and ISIS, are getting stronger. Until the Saudis’ conduct changes, the U.S. should put a pause on further arms sales,” Murphy said in a statement. Some congressional aides questioned whether Congress had the right to try to block the sale, since it has been more than 30 days since Congress was notified about it. But the four senators said the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 allows senators to force a vote on an arms sale by a president. REUTERS

Clinton criticizes Trump for remarks on security briefing, Putin U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton slammed Republican rival Donald Trump on Thursday for talking about things he learned in classified intelligence briefings and for praising Russia’s Vladimir Putin as a better leader than President Barack Obama. Speaking to reporters the day after a New York security forum featuring separate appearances by the two candidates, Clinton also criticized the businessman for saying U.S. generals had been “reduced to rubble” by Obama’s policies. At the televised forum on Wednesday night, Trump said he was “shocked” by information he got during the briefing. “What I did learn is that our leadership, Barack Obama, did not follow what our experts ... said to do,” Trump said. Clinton, who was

secretary of state during Obama’s first term, said Trump’s comments on the briefing were “totally inappropriate and undisciplined.” “I would never comment on any aspect of an intelligence briefing I received,” Clinton said before boarding her campaign plane. As nominees for the Nov. 8 presidential election, she and Trump are entitled to receive intelligence briefings. Clinton said Trump’s praise of Putin as a better leader than Obama was “not just unpatriotic and insulting to the people of our country, as well as to our commander in chief, it is scary.” “It suggests he will let Putin do whatever Putin wants to do and then make excuses for him,” Clinton said. Trump fired back at Clinton, saying her comments were an effort

to make up for a poor performance during the security forum. “Hillary Clinton is always complaining about what’s wrong,” he said during a campaign stop in Cleveland, where he visited a charter school and proposed federal spending on “school choice” programs. “I just watched her on the tarmac. She tried to make up for her horrible performance last night,” Trump said. REUTERS

BURN, BABY, BURN

Everyone knows, in political terms, Donald Trump is a flamethrower. He unleashes attacks without hesitation. He leaps into brawls he should avoid. And even when he is definitively wrong, he fights relentlessly to prove he is right. Now that I think of it, he is a lot like my college girlfriend. Nonetheless, all of that is part of how he won the Republican nomination. Here is another: He answered concerns about the long-range viability of his campaign by insisting he would become more measured, more scripted and more presidential. But that’s not going to happen anytime soon. His campaign shake-up this week make it stunningly clear, what we have seen so far has been the nice part of the race. Trump has now stacked the top of his team with street fighters; people who will throw so many blistering accusations at Hillary Clinton she may long for the

good old days when the candidate merely called her a liar. Why did Trump go this direction? Because as much as he may want to reach moderates and minorities with a kinder, gentler message, his success has always stemmed from attacking.

His real estate deals have been marked by hardball negotiations. His famous catch phrase was “You’re fired” not “I’m afraid we’ll have to let you go.” And his political rise flowed from incinerating his foes, not carefully sauteing their positions. And now Trump is betting his presidential dream that even more numerous, vicious and relentless attacks are his best course. He is likely dousing his last hopes for strong support from the Republican establishment; wagering instead that there are enough angry white voters to rise up and burn Camp Clinton to the ground. History and the polls say he is probably wrong, but they also said he’d never make it this far. So grab your extinguishers. I believe in the coming weeks we’ll see a firebombing unmatched in modern, presidential politics, with Trump betting somehow he’ll be the last one standing amid the ashes.

US drops corruption charges against former Virginia governor, wife Federal prosecutors on Thursday dropped corruption charges against former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and his wife, bringing to a close a case that had tarnished the once-rising star of the Republican Party. “After carefully considering the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the principles of federal prosecution, we have made the decision not to pursue the case further,” the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement. In June, the Supreme Court threw out McDonnell’s bribery convictions in a ruling that could make it tougher to prosecute politicians for corruption. The eight justices, liberals and conservatives alike, overturned McDonnell’s 2014 conviction, saying that his conduct fell short of a “official act” in exchange for a bribe as

required for conviction under federal bribery law. Jurors had convicted McDonnell for accepting $177,000 in luxury gifts and sweetheart loans to him and his wife Maureen McDonnell from a wealthy Richmond businessman seeking to promote a dietary supplement. He was sentenced to

two years in prison but remained free pending appeal. The case was a rare instance of the nation’s highest court reviewing a high-level public official’s criminal conviction. The court sent the case back to lower courts to determine if there was sufficient evidence for a jury to convict McDonnell, which had kept alive the possibility of a new trial. McDonnell served as governor from 2010 to 2014 and once was considered as a possible vice presidential candidate. His wife was convicted in a separate trial and given a one-year sentence but remained free while pursuing a separate appeal. The Supreme Court ruling effectively applied to Maureen McDonnell too, meaning that her conviction also had to be tossed out. REUTERS

BRIEF White House names retired Air Force general as first cyber security chief The White House named a retired Air Force general as the government’s first federal cyber security chief, a position that is intended to improve defenses against hackers. Gregory Touhill’s job will be to protect government networks and critical infrastructure from cyber threats as federal chief

information security officer. The Obama administration has made bolstering federal cyber security a top priority of the president’s last year in office. The issue has gained more attention due to high-profile breaches in recent years against the government and private sector. Most recently U.S. intelligence officials have suspected Russia is responsible for

breaches of Democratic political organizations and state election systems. They believe it may be trying to exert influence over the U.S. presidential election, a charge the Kremlin has denied. President Barack Obama announced the new position in February alongside a budget proposal to Congress asking for $19 billion for cyber security across the U.S. government. REUTERS

Both the wait and the show were torturous KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

When we received an exclusive invite to Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 secret fashion show Wednesday morning, we didn’t expect to suffer. At that point, we had frivolous matters on our minds, such as: Will we spot Kim Kardashian sporting those monstrous see-through plastic boots? Will Kanye perform a surprise single, cuz that’d be rad? A later notice instructed us to board a shuttle bus departing in the Meatpacking District that would bring us to Roosevelt Island for the show. The bus, packed mostly with media folks, took about an hour and a half to make it to the island; in retrospect, we’d have done better to hop the tram over the East River. Once the bus finally let us off, we were in for another 90-minute wait. The sun came out, blistering hot, as we stood in a crowded mass outside the ruins of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital, awaiting further instruction. This was around 3 p.m.,

when the performance was supposed to begin. We were marooned on Yeezy Island, true fashion victims. Among the complaints of the commiserating crowd:“I don’t really want to go anymore”; “It’d be amazing if we all just left, and no one was at the show”; and finally, what we were all thinking: “This better be the best show ever.” Just as it finally seemed we would get that performance as everyone was ushered through the gates into Four Freedoms Park at the far end of the island, all we got was more waiting. It was 85 degrees, we had no access to water or bathrooms, and minimal shade. The conditions had taken their toll on the participants, too. As part of performance artist Vanessa Beecroft’s conceptual installation, around 50 models clad in nude bodysuits stood on the lawn, appearing elegant and stoic, until at least three fainted. When their fellow models rushed to their aid and departed the lawn to procure water, we were

pretty certain it wasn’t part of the show. When West’s models finally emerged — wearing a mix of above-theknee heeled boots, nude leotards, army jackets and hoodies — all appeared well, despite the ominous tones of the chosen music. But that all changed when one model, Amina Blue, grimacing and struggling to walk in heels that appeared several sizes too small, finally just took them off, to applause from the crowd. A second model also removed her heels, after almost collapsing. Were these innocent wardrobe errors or a playing out of the old adage that one must suffer to be beautiful? Either way, we weren’t buying it.

‘Spirit’ and soul Amos Lee goes for hometown pride with his latest album. LINDA LABAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

It’s taken a good dozen years for singer-songwriter Amos Lee to embrace his Philadelphia soul roots as fully as he does on his new album, “Spirit,” which dropped Aug. 19. “It does have a much more soulful direction, much more R&B, but that’s due to the instrumentation and arrangements,” says Lee, speaking from his hometown (“My town,” as he affectionately calls Philly). “The first record was more acoustic because of its elements: just me and an acoustic guitar and drums. I’m not a genre-fied writer. My favorite albums have a thread continuing through the songs that pulls you through the record from start to finish —

and that’s a sonic thread. That for me is what makes it a great listen all the way through.” Steering “Spirit’s” soul-infused sonic thread was Lee himself. After two career boosting albums produced by music veterans Joey Burns of Calexico (2011’s “Mission Bell,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and spun off a hit single with “Windows Are Rolled Down”), and Jay Joyce (of Little Big Town, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant on 2013’s “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song”), the 39-year-old felt confident taking the helm as producer. “My role was more of facilitating people and bringing together the right musicians to elevate the songs,” he says. “This was so much a collective effort, a collaboration. Overall, being a producer meant choosing the musicians I wanted to work with without anyone in

between us. Picking the right people focused the recording process on the songs. I really did my homework.” Key in boosting Lee’s confidence in taking on the producer role was fashion designer John Varvatos, who signed Lee to his Varvatos Records, an imprint through Republic Records. “When I met with John the first time, I knew his clothes but didn’t know the person. But from the first meeting and talking about this record, he was so supportive of me producing. There was no pressure and a lot of freedom; it was super encouraging. “But much of all this is thanks to my old mentor Bruce Lundvall,” he adds of the late Blue Note Records label head, who passed away in 2015 after a storied career working with artists like Willie Nelson, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon and Norah Jones. Lee’s previous recordings, five albums in all, were all on Blue Note. “You can avoid a lot of problems if you take the time to tell how the vibe is when you meet someone,” Lee continues. “Also, I try to pull from people I know. I’m a quick judge; I get a feeling and go with it.”

Amos Lee released his sixth studio full-length in August. MICHAEL LAVINE

Come as you are Chef Angie Mar is reopening Beatrice Inn, this time for all New Yorkers. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Few places in New York have had so many versions as the Beatrice Inn. The West Village basement space opened as a speakeasy where the likes of Zelda Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway gathered in the ’20s. It had a long stint as a classic Italian restaurant in the ’50s, when iconic tapper Paul Draper would put on a show on the tables. Ten years ago, it transformed into the city’s essential see-and-be-seen nightclub, then in 2012 became an upscale meatfocused restaurant. Chef Angie Mar arrived in 2013, a bit starstruck by the “storied history” of 285 W. 12th St. Now, she gets to write her own chapter after buying the space and completing a monthlong revamp. “One of the things we definitely plan on doing is making this place very much all about New York,” says Mar, whose kitchen turns out highend steaks for men in suits as well as burgers for regulars in baseball caps. “I love this city’s vibe of come as you are; we’re accepted no matter what our idiosyncrasies are, and this restaurant should be that way as well.” Closing the restaurant for a month gave her time to tweak her recipes. The focus will still very much

be on meat — Mar is known for her meat pies and ran a burger-focused booth at Mad. Sq. 24 WKND “Sully”

“Cameraperson”

Director: Clint Eastwood Stars: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart Rating: PG-13

Director: Kirsten Johnson Genre: Documentary Rating: NR

In “Sully,” Clint Eastwood takes a story that barely has enough meat for a short film, let alone a movie, and turns it into a movie. It’s a job well done — improbable yet efficient, if not as much improbable and efficient as the feat performed by the film’s hero, Chesley Sullenberger (played by Tom Hanks). On a cold January NYC morning in 2009, the seasoned commercial pilot saved a passenger plane by landing it in the Hudson River. There were no casualties, besides the aircraft and a handful of geese. And the whole ordeal lasted about two minutes — an hour and change if you count the efficient rescue to get the 150 or so on board to dry land. What “Sully” isn’t, though, is simple. The shortest and most compact Eastwood film has ever directed is also arguably his most experimental, using a nonlinear structure to both bait us into staying interested and to explore the mind of someone who’d prefer to keep his thoughts to himself. The big event itself,

Tom Hanks is predictably spot-on as heroic pilot Chesley Sullenberger in Clint Eastwood’s “Sully.” PROVIDED

presented as an IMAX spectacular, is wisely held off till the midway mark. The rest follows the investigation by ghoulish airline officials, who suggest Sullenberger and his tetchier co-pilot (Aaron Eckhart and his impressive ’stache) could have maybe flown back to nearby LaGuardia, saving both the plane and the passengers. On the record, Sullenberger stands by his work; in private, he’s not so sure. This could have been padding. Instead it helps “Sully” become a study of how taciturn man’s men — i.e., Eastwood protagonists — aren’t mere macho machines. Someone like Sullenberger — or “Unforgiven’s” Will Munny, or even Dirty Harry — aren’t crying on the inside, per se, but they are wracked

with doubt, hobbled by trauma. Sullenberger can’t sleep, and he’s deeply uncomfortable when people call him a hero or buy him a vodka cocktail at a rando Midtown Irish bar. He doesn’t want to talk about his feelings, of course, but they’re there. This is a tight movie, with the rare fascinating courtroom climax and only one minor design flaw (brief flashbacks to his youth that seem to serve no purpose). On top of that, it helps further complicate the public persona of its maker, a figure who can say supportive things about Trump and make something as thoughtful as “Sully.” It’s a movie that unlocks his other movies, showing them all to be nuanced studies of tormented masculinity — yes, even “American Sniper.” MATT PRIGGE

In the documentary “Cameraperson,” we’re jetted from Bosnia to Missouri to Brooklyn to Nigeria to Sarajevo — and that’s just in the first five minutes. There must be something images of war, boxing and cars driving by at dusk have in common. And there is: They were all shot by Kirsten Johnson. For the last 20-plus years, Johnson has worked as a cinematographer and camera operator, exclusively for documentaries. Some of them are big (“Citizenfour,” “Fahrenheit 9/11”), some are small, almost all of them are harrowing. And most of them appear, in some fashion, in her new film — an unusual and quietly rich movie made entirely from outtakes and loose ends she’s logged over her long career. But to what end? Johnson doesn’t tell us what to think, what to see between these disparate (and often brief) scenes. Most of the time “Cameraperson” seems like Johnson uploaded video clips and then hit shuffle. One minute we’re in

Kabul watching unused snippets from an interview with an Afghan boy with a messed-up eye; the next we’re in a health clinic in Alabama, or watching home footage of Johnson’s baby twins in New York. Sometimes on-screen text fills in a bit of context. But we’re mostly left adrift, free to watch and to ruminate on big ideas: the ethics of photographing strangers, especially in times of strife; the way “proper” documentaries tend to make life look too clean and simple; the possibility that speaking about trauma to noble reporters and filmmakers can prolong it. We can suss out a bigger, more personal story in “Camera-

person”: that of the experiences of a for-hire talent, someone who takes jobs that take her all over the world, covering whatever subjects come her way. This is the life of a freelancer, though Johnson wisely keeps herself literally out of the picture, only appearing towards the end in a scene with her mother, where it’s impossible to miss what the footage means to her. Like Robert Greene’s “Kate Plays Christine,” it’s a doc about docs that tacitly raises important questions about what we get from nonfiction films. But it can even work on a simple level: as something you watch to just to see the world and the people you may never meet. MP

Longtime cinematographer and camera operator Kirsten Johnson makes a movie comprised of unused footage from documentaries with “Cameraperson.” JANUS FILMS

Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

New Men’s Pleasure Pill Makes ED Remedies Obsolete Soaring Demand for New Sex Pill that Gives Men Longer, Better and More Intense Sex

By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50; you probably already know the truth… “Viagra® doesn’t work! Simply getting an erection doesn’t fix the problem” says Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories. As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with Viagra®. Besides, Viagra® is expensive… costing as much as $50.00 a pill. Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take, if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.

MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you get an erection by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

WORKS ON YOUR HEAD AND YOUR BODY The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike Viagra®, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well. Actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.

it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.

THE SCIENCE OF SEX The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference.

unbeatable when achieving and maintaining an erection and the results are remarkable” said Dr. Damaj. (His findings are illustrated in the charts below.)

JAW-DROPPING CLINICAL PROOF Satisfaction—Increase from 41.4% to 88.1% Frequency—Increase from 44.9% to 79.5% Desire—Increase from 47.9% to 82% Hardness—Increase from 36.2% to 85.7% Duration—Increase from 35% to 79.5% Hardness—Increase from 36.2% to 85.7% Ability to Satisfy—Increase from 44.1% to 83.3% AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brain-power and memory of the participants.

SUPPLY LIMITED BY OVERWHELMING DEMAND “Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.”

THE BRAIN/ERECTION CONNECTION Vesele takes off where Viagra® only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists; Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it. In a 16-week clinical study; scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection,

New men’s pill overwhelms your senses with sexual desire as well as firmer, long-lasting erections. There’s never been anything like it before.

DOCTOR: “VESELE® PASSED THE TEST” “As a doctor, I’ve studied the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide on the body and the brain. I’m impressed by the way it increases cerebral and penile blood flow. The result is evident in the creation of Vesele®. It’s surefire proof that the mind/body connection is

HERE’S WHAT MEN ARE SAYING • I’m ready to go sexually and mentally. • More frequent erections in the night (while sleeping) and in the morning. • I have seen a change in sexual desire. • Typically take 1 each morning and 1 each night. Great stamina results! • An increased intensity in orgasms. • My focus (mental) has really improved… Huge improvement. • Amazing orgasms! • I really did notice a great improvement in my ability.

Things to watch for as Giants face Dallas Odell Beckham Jr. is entering his third NFL season. GETTY IMAGES

Beckham Jr. concerned only about playoffs Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott will be the primary focus for the Giants’ defense on Sunday. GETTY IMAGES

New York needs to feast on Cowboys’ inexperienced offense. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

An offseason where the New York Giants spent over $200 million to upgrade a pretty bad team now sees the rubber meet the road on Sunday at Dallas (4:25 p.m., Fox). Against a division rival, the Giants open their 2016 with hopes of a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. And while the Cowboys will be without starting quarterback Tony Romo for this game, they are far from a bad team. They still have an aggressive defense and one of the top offensive lines in the league, not to mention an elite playmaker in wide receiver Dez Bryant. It all makes for an intriguing Week 1 for New York.

It’s a game that, if they seriously believe they are contenders for the NFC East and the playoffs, the Giants must win. Three things to watch from the Giants in Week 1:

revamped 1The defense

Much of that $200 million spent this offseason in free agency — OK, nearly all of it — was spent on what was the league’s worst defense a year ago. They upgraded the pass rush, adding defensive end Olivier Vernon and defensive tackle Damon Harrison. Speed was added at linebacker, and cornerback Janoris Jenkins is a big upgrade in the secondary. Eli Apple, who boasts huge potential at corner, and safety Darian Thompson are rookies who could shine. This unit should be much improved and should keep the Giants in most games. Sunday will be their first test.

2

Stopping Elliott

The Cowboys made a splash early in the NFL Draft, reaching for Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth pick. There was already pressure on the rookie to live up to the hype, pressure that is now multiplied with Romo’s injury. Dallas will lean on him heavily in this game with fellow rookie Dak Prescott under center. “Well, we really liked [Elliott] coming out of school. There was a lot to like about his career at Ohio State. He was a very productive player for them, on one of the best teams in the country, and he did a lot of different things,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. “He ran the ball, he caught the ball, he blocked and he played the right way. He was banged up a little bit for a couple weeks of training camp, but prior to

that and since then, he has really shown us that he can do what we are asking him to do; run the football in our scheme, handle the protections and what we are asking him to do as a route runner and also as a blocker. So he has done a really nice job, he works very hard at the game, he picks things up quickly, he is a young player like a lot of our guys are, but again, it will be exciting to see him play.”

O-line 3Cowboys overrated?

Last year, they were a top-tier unit in the run game but struggled in their pass protection. In fact, they were bottomhalf of the league in sacks allowed. That is something that a Giants front four that figures to be very good can ideally capitalize on. If they can get after Prescott early and often it could quickly become overwhelming for the rookie quarterback.

Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t messing around this season as the New York Giants wide receiver is looking just not to pad his own gaudy numbers but lead his team to a winning record. Two years in the NFL have been kind to Beckham, an All-Pro in each of his first two seasons in the league and one of the game’s brightest young stars. But it has also been two years of losing records for the Giants, identical 6-10 marks in his first two seasons in the league — not good enough for the playoffs. And it is the playoffs, the grandest stage of them all, that is a fitting place to showcase Beckham’s abilities. On Wednesday, Beckham was asked about topping his production in his first two seasons and he discussed not his personal numbers but his team’s record. He’s led the Giants in receiving his first two years in the league. “I definitely want to get better each and every year. Whether it’s put up better numbers, but I just want to get better every year. The numbers mean something in a sense, but the 6-10 number, flip that around, 10-6 means a lot more. I just hate losing,” Beckham

said. “I’m cool with other people being open, we’re scoring. There’s no better feeling than being on the field and everything is clicking and we’re winning games. I remember my freshman year in college. We were 13-0 and I wasn’t going for 120 yards a game. It was 50 yards, five catches, the blocks that you made to spring a running back. It’s really about winning. I hate losing.” The Giants haven’t had a winning record since 2012 when they were 9-7 and haven’t made the playoffs since 2011. He also addressed issues of being a “villain” in the NFL, a tag that has surfaced repeatedly especially surrounding his feud with Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman. He essentially shrugged off the suggestion, saying that he doesn’t perceive himself that way or embrace that outlook. “I have fun. I’m myself at all times and I don’t think it’s necessarily liked all the time, unless you’re on my side. I can’t really control that,” Beckham said. “Like I said, I can’t control who likes, doesn’t like, likes me. It’s football at this point.” KRISTIAN DYER

Things to watch for as Jets host Bengals

How will the Jets’ defense hold up against Andy Dalton and company? TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

Sunday kicks off the Jets’ season — a campaign full of promise following last year’s 10-win mark, and with a roster mostly intact. In order for Gang Green to get on the right track and win the first game of a brutal early six-game stretch, they’ll need to get the offense clicking — something that didn’t materialize in the preseason — and rely on a defense that has a nice blend of accomplished vets and enthusiastic youth. MetLife Stadium will be a sea of unforgiving green on Sunday (1 p.m., CBS), but that won’t be enough. The team will actually need to ride that wave of emotion and then apply their gameplan almost flawlessly against a perennial playoff contender.

Can the Jets 1against move the ball a stacked

Bengals defense?

The Bengals may be one of the more underrated defenses in the league. They aren’t star-driven like the Broncos, or considered cerebral like Bill Belichick’s Patriots, but year in and year out, the Bengals are statistically among the league’s best. Jets wideout Brandon Marshall said he knows what type of defense they’ll be facing, though. “The star of the defense is the defense,” Marshall said. “They work well together [and] play a lot of zone. We have to be patient and just take what they’re giving us. They’re not going to give up too many big plays.

the Jets’ 2fullyWill defense be intact?

Bowles said the statuses for a couple of key defenders are still up in the air. As of Thursday’s practice, both linebacking stalwart David Harris (shoulder) and rookie linebacker Jordan Jenkins (calf) were question marks. Bowles said “not yet” when asked if he was 100 percent sure that either or both would be ready by Sunday. Regarding Jenkins in particular, Bowles said that “some days he’s up, and some days he’s down … and that will probably go right up until the game.” Jets fans are well-versed on the importance of Harris, but the rookie’s availability is equally important. Jenkins, a third-round pick out of Georgia, said he’s “getting closer” to being ready. Prior to his injury, Jenkins was the starting outside linebacker in the Jets’ 3-4 defensive front (three linemen and four linebackers) and played in both the base and nickel (five defensive backs) packages. If he can’t go, look for Mike Catapano to take his place.

3Under pressure

Owner Woody Johnson declined to say that this is a must-win season for the Jets, but he didn’t have to. Bowles has done an excellent job in his brief time here, but in the New York market, and working for a franchise that many think is perpetually doomed, getting off to a fast start — and making the playoffs — is all anyone wants for Gang Green. Marshall acknowledged the pressure of trying to win. “Obviously, I’m going into my 11th season and I’ve never made the playoffs. I’m going into this game and this season with a lot of anxiety,”Marshall said. “At this point in my career, I just want to win.”

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall need to at least duplicate their output from a season ago.

Best bets for NFL Week 1 A look at where you should place your money this weekend. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

A glance around the league at the best bets for Week 1 in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings (-2) at Tennessee Titans Minnesota’s season came to a heartbreaking end, a missed chip-shot field goal, in last year’s playoffs. The team had Super Bowl aspirations coming into training camp this year but that was seemingly derailed by a freak injury in training camp to Teddy Bridgewater. I am not so sure of that. The Vikings were carried on offense by Adrian Peterson in

2015, not their NFL second-worst pass offense. Sam Bradford was brought in for a first- and fourth-round pick just days after Bridgewater was ruled out for the season, indicating the Vikings are not ready to give up on this season. Bradford may not have the mobility of Bridgewater, but he can be a decent game manager. His defense, fifth-best in the league by PPG allowed (18.9), will keep the team in every game. Add to this that the Vikings are 7-0 ATS in their last seven road games, and this spells a 1-0 start for Minnesota against the bottomfeeding Titans. The pick: Vikings -2

Buffalo Bills at Baltimore Ravens (-3) Buffalo may not be a playoff team, but they

starts and ends with their running game and LeSean McCoy, who missed four games last year due to injury; he should be fully healthy on Sunday. The Bills’ rushing attack was the best in the league last year, amassing over 150 YPG. That was thanks in part to highly-mobile QB Tyrod Taylor, who’s eligible to improve in his second year as a starter. He may not have injury-prone Sammy Watkins to throw to all year long but Watkins will suit up for Week 1, and the aging Ravens defense likely doesn’t have an answer for him.

Whether it’s Thomas Rawls or Christine Michael in the backfield for Seattle, the Seahawks should be able to run roughshod on Miami’s rush defense that was ranked 27th last season. That will open things up downfield for Russell Wilson should he need to go there. Aries A trip or endeavor should provide you the experience you need to leap forward. Change will be in your favor, so don’t shy away from trying something new.

Libra Your ability to take a practical application and apply it to an iffy situation will help you get ahead and overcome any obstacles.

Taurus Legal, financial and health matters will be riddled with uncertainty and will require your personal attention to avert problems.

Scorpio Look at the big picture and make alterations based on what you see. If it’s time to make changes, do so. Procrastination will be your downfall.

Gemini Money matters will not be as they appear. Don’t get involved in a joint venture or do something that’s not in your best interest. Opportunity comes from within.

Sagittarius Put your best foot forward and let everyone know that you are willing to see matters through to the end. Listen to others and ask questions.

Cancer Your goals may not be shared by those you live with. Use friendly persuasion and incentives to entice others to help you turn your plans into a reality.

Capricorn Stick close to home and take care of matters that will improve your lifestyle. You will learn a valuable lesson from a relationship that makes a sudden shift.

Leo Your effort to bring about positive change at work and in your relationships with children, peers and superiors will open up a window of opportunity.

Aquarius Your drive, charisma and desire to do something to help others will put you in the limelight. A romantic celebration will bring you closer to someone special.

Virgo Problems at home, as well as legal and financial matters, should be dealt with quickly. Use your skills to bring about positive change.

Pisces Learning from what you see as well as listening to what others have to say will help you prevent a negative situation from escalating. EUGENIA LAST
