THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

NEW YORK METS SIGN EX-NFL PLAYER TIM TEBOW

1

According to reports from Mets insiders like James Wagner, who covers the Mets for the New York Times, Tim Tebow — a former Heisman-winning football player who was cut by the Patriots, Jets and Eagles — signed for MLB’s largest free-agent signing bonus of $100,000 Thursday when he inked a minor league deal with the team. He is also looking to have his cake and eat it too. The Mets reportedly are allowing Tebow to continue to work his “day job” as a college football analyst for SEC Network. And the athlete’s website (which links to TDAutographs) is selling not only memorabilia from Tebow’s storied college career — and less storied NFL one — it is also selling signed autographed baseball bats. He hasn’t even taken a professional swing yet. EVAN MACY

ONE STUDENT DEAD, ONE HURT IN TEXAS SCHOOL SHOOTING

2

A female student shot and wounded a fellow student at Alpine High School in West Texas on Thursday and then died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound, news outlets in the town reported, quoting the county sheriff. The shootings prompted an evacuation of the high school, and other schools were put on lockdown in the remote town of about 6,000 people some 200 miles southeast of El Paso in Brewster County, officials said. “This community did not expect this. We don’t want this and we can’t explain it yet,” Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said in an interview with KWES-TV. The names and ages of the two students have not yet been released, Dodson said. The student who survived, “had run out into the street and some local people picked her up and took her to the hospital,” he said. REUTERS

WELLS FARGO WILL PAY $190M TO SETTLE CUSTOMER FRAUD CASE

3

Wells Fargo will pay $185 million in penalties and $5 million to customers that regulators say were pushed into fee-generating accounts that they never requested, officials said Thursday. “Wells Fargo reached these agreements consistent with our commitment to customers and in the interest of putting this matter behind us,” the bank said of its settlement with California prosecutors and federal regulators. “We regret and take responsibility for any instances where customers may have received a product that they did not request,” it added. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will receive $100 million of the total penalties — the largest fine levied by the agency, which was conceived after the 2008 financial crisis. REUTERS

The future of biking in Philly is here And you can find it in Northeast Philly. RANDY LOBASSO @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

The future of Philadelphia biking is here — and it’s all the way up in the Northeast. Over the summer, several bike lane projects were quietly installed in Northeast Philadelphia, projects that indicate where Philly’s infrastructure should go if the city wants to be serious about making biking a safe way to get around. The first project is probably the most stunning, as far as Philadelphia infrastructure goes. It’s a parking-protected two-way bike lane on Ryan Avenue in Mayfair, between Rowland and Lexington avenues, which brings road users into Pennypack Park. The 50-foot-wide street originally had vehicle parking against the curb, a bike lane inside the parking lane, two lanes of motor vehicle traffic and a center median. Now, the median is gone; parking on the north side has been moved 14 feet into the street, and a two-way bike lane has been moved to

the curb, with a 4-foot buffer zone between the bike lanes and the parked cars. Bicyclists are literally separated from motor vehicle traffic by parked motor vehicles. First announced in 2015, the lane is the result of two years of talks between Councilman Bobby Henon, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Streets Department. It is the city’s first parking-protected bike lane. The second, a buffered bike lane on Tyson Avenue, is another project endorsed by Councilman Henon for his 6th Councilmanic District. This lane, though not revolutionary (buffered bike lanes give cyclists 10 feet of space, and similar lanes can be found on Spruce and Pine streets, and the Walnut Street Bridge in Center City), it is the first piece of bicycle infrastructure to remove a lane of motor vehicle traffic since 2012, when City Council passed a cynical, dangerous law to give itself veto authority on any new bike lane. The unanimous passage of the Tyson Avenue lane was a moral victory for Philly cyclists. The Ryan Avenue lane is a victory for proponents

of safer, livable streets. Philadelphia has long been ahead of most U.S. cities as far as its bicycle infrastructure goes. We began developing bike lanes in the 1990s, and have laid down more than 435 miles of tracks for cyclists since then. Those tracks made Philadelphia the most-biked big city in the country. But times have changed. Some 2015 bike counts show that Philly’s bicycling public has leveled off at around 2 percent of commuters, which is still a healthy number of cyclists citywide. But many cities are gaining on us. Chicago, for instance, has vowed to only build protected bike lanes from here on out, and a recent National Association of City Transportation Officials report shows their bicycling population is growing faster than ours. While standard and buffered bike lanes are proven to make streets safer for your average cyclist, providing a physical barrier between cyclists and motor vehicle drivers has been shown to get more people on bikes who otherwise would stick to the comfortable, yet frustrating, experience of driving a car on

city streets. Whether the physical separation includes parked cars, bollards or potted plants, protected lanes should be a priority for all road users in Philadelphia. Protected lanes keep bicyclists safer in the face of the oncoming face-in-a-smartphone driver, and have actually been proven to help with motor vehicle flow — not to mention more people on bikes means fewer in cars, which is good for everyone and cleans up our city’s air. So, why haven’t more Council members gotten on board, rallying support for protected bike lanes in obvious places like JFK, Market Street, Erie Avenue, Spring Garden Street and Washington Avenue? Political will, mostly. And the unsubstantiated, irrational fear that giving bicyclists a space to ride safely will snarl motor vehicle traffic. These emotional claims have run their course — and been proven false again and again. It’s time the city makes safer transportation a priority. Randy LoBasso is the communications manager at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and a columnist for Metro.

The city released a man convicted of indecent exposure to minors after he had served his sentence. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

Federal authorities criticized Philadephia’s “sanctuary city” polices on Thurday after announcing that they nabbed an undocumented immigrant who was convicted of a sex crime and released after serving his prison term. Milton Berrera-Lopez, 29, of Guatemala, was apprehended a week after being released from “local custody” on Aug. 30, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said. Berrera-Lopez was released after spending about two years in custody for two counts of indecent exposure involving minors. Berrera-Lopez was convicted on Aug. 30, and was sentenced to two years in prison, two years’ probation and forbidden from contacting minors. Since he already served the time, he was released. ICE filed a detainer to request a Philly city jail hold on Berrera-Lopez so they could take him into custody for violating U.S. immigration law, but the jail released him, ICE said. Federal agents arrested Berrera-Lopez later that same day when he went to report to his probation officer at a center in Montgomery County. He is now in federal custody pending deportation proceedings, ICE said. In a news release announcing the arrest, an ICE official called out Philly’s sanctuary city policy, stating that it is “creating a potentially unsafe environment for the city’s residents.” “When convicted criminal aliens who pose

a threat to children are released into communities instead of being safely transferred to ICE custody in a secure environment, our communities are exposed to an unnecessary risk,” Thomas Decker, director of ICE’s Philadelphia Enforcement and Removal Operations, said in a statement. He went on to urge the city to change its policy. “This level of risk can be mitigated in many instances … the agency welcomes significant modifications to the current policy which is creating a potentially unsafe environment for the city’s residents.” But Mayor Jim Kenney’s spokeswoman Lauren Hitt rejected that criticism. “It’s completely inaccurate to say our policies put Philadelphia in danger. It’s just the opposite,” Hitt said via email. “By not making our police and prisons do ICE’s job for them, we have stronger relationships with our immigrant communities. In cities without sanctuary city policies, immigrants are often too scared to report crimes or act as witnesses in criminal cases.” ICE issues detainer “holds” to local law enforcement when they have a person in custody whose immigration status is in question. ICE asks that the person be held until federal agents can take them into custody. Philadelphia rejected cooperating with these “holds” and adopted a “sanctuary city” policy in 2014 when Mayor Michael Nutter signed an executive order ending city-ICE cooperation. Immigrant advocates had argued the change would make undocumented residents less afraid of being deported and more willing to cooperate with law enforcement. Month later, DNC delegate faces indecent assault charges Philly prosecutors reversed their decision not to prosecute after viewing surveillance video. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

A full month after a proBernie Sanders Democratic delegate reported a sexual assault at her hotel to authorities during the party’s national convention, prosecutors have filed indecent assault charges against a 74-year-old delegate. Gwen Snyder, who filed the assault complaint, celebrated the news on Facebook and Twitter after the DA’s office reversed their earlier position to not prosecute the case. “Great news: @DASethWilliams’ office has reversed their original position & will be prosecuting my sexual assault at the DNC,” she tweeted. “My assaulter is officially in custody. Thank you everyone for your support urging @DASethWilliams to prosecute my case — organizing works!” The DA’s office con-

Walter Weeks FACEBOOK

firmed in a statement that they had changed their position on the case after gathering more evidence. “Based on what we later learned was an incomplete investigation, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office (DAO) initially declined charges in this case,” the DA’s office said in a statement. “After further investigation by the DAO including a review of additional video and eyewitness testimony, the Office has charged Walter Weeks.” Snyder claims that during the Democratic National Convention in Philly earlier this summer, she was in the Doubletree Hotel’s bar at around 2:30 a.m. on July 27 when she was assaulted by fellow Sanderssupporting Democratic delegate Weeks, 74, of

Garnet Valley. “He thrust his face into my chest and forced his tongue just above my nipple. I yelled and pushed him away,” Snyder wrote in an online petition demanding Williams charge Weeks. “I was humiliated; I went to my room and cried. When I pulled myself together enough to speak, I came back down to the lobby to report what happened to other members of my delegation. Later that morning, I reported what happened to the police.” However, prosecutors told her they chose not to file charges, Snyder wrote, because they believed Weeks may have been too intoxicated at the time for prosecutors to win a conviction. “This is unacceptable. Alcohol cannot be a getout-of jail-free card for sexual assault,” Snyder wrote. Prosecutors said in a statement that they decided to file charges after uncovering new surveillance video evidence of the incident. Weeks turned himself in to the Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Victim’s Unit on Wednesday to face charges.

Boy misses first day of school for this terrifying reason On the first day of school Tuesday, one Berks County boy left his home and boarded the bus, but never made it to his kindergarten classroom. Prince Oquendo, a student at the Monocacy Elementary Center in Amity Township, located about 12 miles outside Reading, was instead found four hours later, still on the bus — and a little hungry. Prince’s bus driver failed to follow protocol by checking the bus before leaving the vehicle in the transportation company lot, according to 6ABC. The driver has since been terminated. Prince’s mom, Michelle Oquendo, said her son was crying. “When the door shut, [Prince] started to hit the

Prince Oquendo TWITTER/@69NEWS

doors and yell for the guy to pay attention to him. And the guy just kept on walking. He started crying, and basically spent his time crying on the bus,” she said. In fact, nobody even knew Prince was trapped on the school bus until his mother called the school at noon when the bus didn’t drop him off

after the half day. Staff at New Rhoads Transportation then checked the bus, which had been sitting in the sun all morning on an 85-degree day, CBS Philly reported. Daniel Boone Area School District Superintendent James Harris told CBS Philly that drivers “generally” look for students’ backpacks and water bottles, but Prince’s driver “didn’t do that.” Harris said that the district also failed by not calling Oquendo when Prince was marked as absent for the day. “It just goes to show how important our procedures are,” Harris told CBS Philly. “We don’t need to be doing anything new. We just need to do what we are supposed to be doing.” ALEXIS SACHDEV

ERNEST OWENS @MrErnestOwens

I was 23 years old when the first Ernest Opinion was published here in Philadelphia. Next month I will turn 25, and the conversation sparked by that first op-ed about racism in the Gayborhood is still happening. My life has transformed in the past two years, and with new opportunities arriving more frequently than ever, old ones must take a backseat. Today, after two years of op-eds and memories, The Ernest Opinion will take its final bow in Metro. The decision was not an easy one to make. For some time, this column served as my formal introduction into the city as a black gay millennial voice that is often left out of the media. This column

initially was an experiment. Would a major city be interested in reading the perspective of someone who isn’t usually a leading voice in newspapers? Surprisingly, audiences were. Metro took a shot on me, and I’m forever grateful. As I have developed my voice writing about politics and social issues, my interests have expanded. In this space, I have predicted the fall of several city politicians, stood up for various underrepresented communities, and still managed to carve out some time to break the internet with a memorable Twitter exchange with Justin Timberlake. These were the moments that inspired and humbled me. It taught me that in a time in which we’re still fighting for black lives to matter and LGBTQ people are still seeking equality, folks can sometimes let go of their differences to support someone else’s rights. That knowledge allowed my column to reach new heights while also never forgetting the

communities that served as the focus. But with such exciting times come a desire to broaden one’s horizons. Quite frankly, I’ve grown up with a yearning to more deeply explore subjects that are important to me, to go beyond the confines of my column. I’m more political, controversial, and have become an unapologetic activist. I need the proper space and outlet to pursue this role. That’s really why I’m not looking at this as a goodbye, but as a hello. Metro gave me the platform to elevate my voice from the streets of West Philly all the way to City Hall and along the East Coast. It was a local column that grew to be a regional one, and it’s been one of the crowning achievements of my career. As I embark on a new chapter of my journey that will reveal itself very soon, I’ll never forget the countless readers and the lessons learned. To my faithful followers: This is not a goodbye, but a hello.

Police, FBI spend second day digging for clues to missing California student

Police and FBI agents spent a second day on Thursday digging at the edge of a California university campus for the remains of a student who went missing 20 years ago while walking to her dormitory. A spokesman for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office told the local San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper that some “items of interest” had been recovered during the dig, without elaborating. The sheriff’s office has said that new information in the cold case has led them to believe that Smart’s remains could be found on the hill, below a

50-foot concrete letter “P” marking the school. The excavation project has drawn new interest to the case, which is unsolved two decades after the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman’s May 25, 1996 disappearance. Smart had left an offcampus party at about 2 a.m. that morning accompanied by two classmates who believed she should not walk home alone. The group was joined along the way by fellow student Paul Flores. After they split up on campus, Flores was alone with Smart not far from her Muir Hall dorm. He has told police that he parted company with her there. Flores was the last per-

son to see Smart alive, according to authorities. The San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper reported that after Smart was reported missing by fellow dorm resident, cadaver dogs homed in on Flores’ room, specifically the mattress of his bed. Flores was questioned by police in June 1996 and has been called a person of interest in the case but has not been arrested or charged. The attorney who formerly represented Flores in the case no longer represents him, according to his office. It was not immediately clear if Flores has retained a new lawyer. Smart’s parents sued Flores and the university for wrongful death, but that lawsuit remains on hold because police records have been sealed during the criminal investigation. “We are mindful that with or without the hoped-for results from this week’s efforts, we are now on a path that will bring our family peace and comfort,” the Smarts wrote in a statement released to the Tribune. intelligence oďŹƒcials have suspected Russia is responsible for breaches of Democratic political organizations and state election systems. They believe it may be trying to exert inuence over the U.S. presidential election, a charge the Kremlin has denied. President Barack Obama announced the new position in February alongside a budget proposal to Congress asking for $19 billion for cyber security across the U.S. government. The job is a political appointment, meaning Obama’s successor can choose to replace Touhill after being sworn in next January. Touhill is currently a deputy assistant secretary for cyber security and communications at the Department of Homeland Security. REUTERS

US drops corruption charges against former Virginia governor, wife Federal prosecutors on Thursday dropped corruption charges against former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and his wife, bringing to a close a case that had tarnished the once-rising star of the Republican Party. “After carefully considering the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the principles of federal prosecution, we have made the decision not to pursue the case further,â€? the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement. In June, the Supreme Court threw out McDonnell’s bribery convictions in a ruling that could make it tougher to prosecute politicians for corruption. The eight justices, liberals and conservatives alike, overturned McDonnell’s 2014 conviction, saying that his conduct fell short of

a “official act in exchange for a bribe as required for conviction under federal bribery law. Jurors had convicted McDonnell for accepting $177,000 in luxury gifts and sweetheart loans to

him and his wife Maureen McDonnell from a wealthy Richmond businessman seeking to promote a dietary supplement. He was sentenced to two years in prison but

remained free pending appeal. The case was a rare instance of the nation’s highest court reviewing a high-level public official’s criminal conviction. The court sent the case back to lower courts to determine if there was sufficient evidence for a jury to convict McDonnell, which had kept alive the possibility of a new trial. McDonnell served as governor from 2010 to 2014 and once was considered as a possible vice presidential candidate. His wife was convicted in a separate trial and given a one-year sentence but remained free while pursuing a separate appeal. The Supreme Court ruling effectively applied to Maureen McDonnell too, meaning that her conviction also had to be tossed out. REUTERS

what our experts ... said to do,” Trump said. Clinton, who was secretary of state during Obama’s first term, said Trump’s comments on the briefing were “totally inappropriate and undisciplined.” “I would never comment on any aspect of an intelligence briefing I received,” Clinton said before boarding her campaign plane. As nominees for the Nov. 8 presidential election, she and Trump are entitled to receive intelligence briefings. Clinton said Trump’s praise of Putin as a better leader than Obama was “not just unpatriotic and insulting to the people of our country, as well as to our commander in chief, it is scary.” “It suggests he will let Putin do whatever Putin

wants to do and then make excuses for him,” Clinton said. Trump fired back at Clinton, saying her comments were an effort to make up for a poor performance during the security forum. “Hillary Clinton is always complaining about what’s wrong,” he said during a campaign stop in Cleveland, where he visited a charter school and proposed federal spending on “school choice” programs. U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton slammed Republican rival Donald Trump on Thursday for talking about things he learned in classified intelligence briefings and for praising Russia’s Vladimir Putin as a better leader than President Barack Obama. Speaking to reporters the day after a New York security forum featuring separate appearances by the two candidates, Clinton also criticized the businessman for saying U.S. generals had been “reduced to rubble” by Obama’s policies. At the televised forum on Wednesday night, Trump said he was “shocked” by information he got during the briefing. “What I did learn is that our leadership, Barack Obama, did not follow

Trump says he was against Iraq war despite Howard Stern interview Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said he was against the Iraq war all along despite telling radio interviewer Howard Stern in 2002 that he favored it. Trump used the start of a speech about education at a charter school in Cleveland to push back at Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s statement that his position on Iraq is pretty much like her own: She voted for the 2003 war as a senator from New York but has since disavowed the vote. At an NBC forum on Wednesday night, Clinton pointed to a September 2002 interview Trump gave to radio

host Howard Stern to say that Trump had supported the war. Trump had said “Yeah, I guess so, when asked about a potential conflict in Iraq. Various fact-checkers have cited this interview to debunk Trump’s statement that he was

always against the war. In Cleveland, Trump cited a Jan. 28, 2003, interview he did with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto to say he was skeptical. In that interview, Trump said: “I think the Iraqi situation is a problem. And I think the economy is a much

bigger problem as far as the president is concerned. He said in his Cleveland remarks that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq had left a power void filled by Islamic State militants. “But I was opposed to that war from the beginning, long before my interview with Howard Stern, Trump said. He also cited what he said was a March 25, 2003, interview. “Just days after the war started, I was quoted as saying the war is a mess, Trump said, calling it “more evidence that I had opposed the war from the start. REUTERS

BRIEF Senators seek to block $1.15 billion US arms sale to Saudi Arabia Four U.S. senators introduced a joint resolution on Thursday seeking to block the U.S. sale of $1.15 billion of Abrams tanks and other military equipment to Saudi Arabia, citing issues including the conict in Yemen. The measure was introduced by Republican Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee and Democrats Chris Murphy and Al Franken, the latest indication of strong disapproval of the deal among some U.S. lawmakers. “Selling $1.15 billion in tanks, guns, ammunition and more to a country with a poor human rights record embroiled in a bitter war is a recipe for disaster and an escalation of an ongoing arms race in the region,â€? Paul said in a statement. In August, 64 members of the House of Representatives signed a letter urging President Barack Obama to delay the sale. The Pentagon announced on Aug. 9 that the State Department had approved the potential sale of more than 130 Abrams battle tanks, 20 armored recovery vehicles and other equipment to Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Defense Security Co-

operation Agency, which implements foreign arms sales, said that General Dynamics would be the principal contractor for the sale. Introducing the resolution, the senators cited the conict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is leading a coalition in support of forces loyal to the exiled government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi who are trying to oust Iran-allied Houthi forces from the capital, Sanaa. Human rights groups have criticized the coalition’s air strikes because of the deaths of civilians. “Thousands of civilians are being killed, and terrorist groups inside the country, like al Qaeda and ISIS, are getting stronger. Until the Saudis’ conduct changes, the U.S. should put a pause on further arms sales,â€? Murphy said in a statement. Some congressional aides questioned whether Congress had the right to try to block the sale, since it has been more than 30 days since Congress was notiďŹ ed about it. But the four senators said the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 allows senators to force a vote on an arms sale by a president. REUTERS

BURN, BABY, BURN

Everyone knows, in political terms, Donald Trump is a flamethrower. He unleashes attacks without hesitation. He leaps into brawls he should avoid. And even when he is definitively wrong, he fights relentlessly to prove he is right. Now that I think of it, he is a lot like my college girlfriend. Nonetheless, all of that is part of how he won the Republican nomination. Here is another: He answered concerns about the long-range viability of his campaign by insisting he would become more measured, more scripted and more presidential. But that’s not going to happen anytime soon. His campaign shake-up this week make it stunningly clear, what we have seen so far has been the nice part of the race. Trump has now stacked the top of his team with street fighters; people who will throw so many blistering accusations at Hillary Clinton she may long for the

His real estate deals have been marked by hardball negotiations. His famous catch phrase was “You’re fired not “I’m afraid we’ll have to let you go. And his political rise flowed from incinerating his foes, not carefully sauteing their positions. And now Trump is betting his presidential dream that even more numerous, vicious and relentless attacks are his best course. He is likely dousing his last hopes for strong support from the Republican establishment; wagering instead that there are enough angry white voters to rise up and burn Camp Clinton to the ground. History and the polls say he is probably wrong, but they also said he’d never make it this far. So grab your extinguishers. I believe in the coming weeks we’ll see a firebombing unmatched in modern, presidential politics, with Trump betting somehow he’ll be the last one standing amid the ashes.

good old days when the candidate merely called her a liar. Why did Trump go this direction? Because as much as he may want to reach moderates and minorities with a kinder, gentler message, his success has always stemmed from attacking.

Nick and Amy Renee Heidemann-Noonan of Karmin have some theories about “Stranger Things.” “The whole next season is going to be about finding Eleven again,” says Nick. “It’ll have something to do with that snakelike creature they planted inside of those people. It’s harvesting. Will already threw up that bug.” The Berklee grads binge-watched the season while preparing for their tour in support of their sophomore studio album, “Leo Rising,” due out Sept. 9. The follow-up is a punchier departure from their sweet, soulful pop 2012 debut, “Hello,” following the signs of the zodiac to inspire each of 12 tracks. The couple — who are both professionally and romantically intertwined — call from Los Angeles, their new

home, where they’re in the midst of moving in and renovating. How did the inspiration to do a zodiac concept album come about? Amy: We have a strange story about this. About two years ago, on our birthdays, the band and the crew gifted us a meeting with an astrologer. At first we were like, “Uh, this is interesting…” but

we thought we should go and humor them. It turned out to be a meaningful event for us. The astrologer put us in touch with a spiritual side and gave us perspective as to what we’re doing with our lives. We decided after that to leave our major album, and as the album took shape, each song became a persona. One thing to note — the

album has 13 tracks, but there are only 12 zodiac signs. What’s the straggler? Nick: Well there’s a secret 13th sign [laughs]. No, the album is 12 songs, with a bonus track. Amy: The bonus track is one that’s inspired by political and global events. Nick: We’re reaching a point now [as a band] where we’re a growing community and we

Each song is correlated to a different zodiac sign — so what came first, the characters or the music? Amy: They started as characters. I like to write lyrics like it’s coming from someone else — you have to get out of your own head. Nick: We tried to take characteristics [from the signs] and represent them in the lyrics. Like, Cancer is focused on home and family, so [“No Suitcase”] is a song about a person who is trying to find those things. And Sagittarius is fun-loving but they can also be a heartbreaker so you get a song like “Blame It on My Heart.” Did you ever feel trapped in the idea of a “concept album” once you started writing it? Nick: The idea didn’t start to make sense until two or three songs in. “Sugar” and “Don’t Know You” — we were like, “Oh, that sounds like a Gemini song…” because it bounces back and forth like dual personalities.

It was organic like that. One of the songs is a cover of “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka” — which, with the timing of Gene Wilder’s passing, is both sad and poignant. Nick: That was one of Amy’s favorite childhood movies. Amy: He was such an inspiration — all of his work is incredible. When he sings that song, it’s so timeless and unforgettable. We were so thankful we were able to get permission to put it out and add our own verses. You guys usually keep quiet about your personal lives, but am I right in saying a big milestone for you this year was getting married? Amy: We’re married, and we’re loving it. Though it doesn’t feel all that different now. Given your working and personal lives collide, do you find that puts your relationship on the table all the time? Nick: Pretty much. Amy: But we don’t mind it either. We’re like, “Whatever.”

New Men’s Pleasure Pill Makes ED Remedies Obsolete Soaring Demand for New Sex Pill that Gives Men Longer, Better and More Intense Sex

New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50; you probably already know the truth… “Viagra® doesn’t work! Simply getting an erection doesn’t fix the problem” says Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories. As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with Viagra®. Besides, Viagra® is expensive… costing as much as $50.00 a pill. Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take, if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.

MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you get an erection by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

WORKS ON YOUR HEAD AND YOUR BODY The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike Viagra®, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well. Actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.

THE BRAIN/ERECTION CONNECTION 23 Philadelphia Weekend, September 9-11, 2016

®

Vesele takes off where Viagra only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists; Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it. In a 16-week clinical study; scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not

only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.

THE SCIENCE OF SEX The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference. AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brain-power and memory of the participants.

SUPPLY LIMITED BY OVERWHELMING DEMAND “Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.” 100 SATISFACTION RATE (% Patients)

bring to the stage to the screen — whether it be big facial expressions or physical humor. I’ve interviewed Don Rickles and I’ve interviewed Andrew Dice Clay — both of whom I know you have an affinity for. How do you think you’ve furthered their agenda, made your mark and kept the art of the politically incorrect aloft and alive? SM: From Rickles I learned you can make

fun of people in a way that is not mean or hurtful if you have humility and incorporate self-deprecating humor — so that you’re laughing with people, not at them. I was Dice’s opening act in Vegas for a couple of years. I learned about showmanship from him; that it wasn’t only about the comedy, but also the presentation. Your autobiography is coming out. I’ve been waiting for someone

to connect comedy and food. Where are you with the memoir, and can you give me a taste of its vibe? SM: The book will be out in 2017. It combines my two passions — laughter and food. Growing up, my first “stage” was the dinner table with my family where we shared funny stories over a meal. The book tells the stories of my life, observing human behavior through a series of my most memorable meals. I was told that John Oliver would do no interviews. Have you anything to say about attitude-y Brits? SM: I love doing interviews. I don’t have any problem with the Brits, but I do have a problem with people shopping at Whole Foods. Come out to the Oddball Comedy Festival— you’ll hear why. Reasons we can’t wait to watch the Eagles and Browns on Sunday

It’s finally here: The 2016 season commences in South Philly this weekend. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

As recently as one week ago, the start of the NFL season for the Eagles was little more than ... meh. The Birds were a middling franchise with an unexciting starting quarterback and an exciting future well to far in the future. But then everything changed when Sam Bradford was sent to the Vikings in exchange for a first round pick — and rookie Carson Wentz, initially told he would sit out for nine months, became the Week 1 starter. Now Eagles fans are giddy with anticipation.

Here’s a look at the three biggest reasons why we can’t wait for kickoff between Philadelphia and Cleveland, at 1 p.m. Sunday on CBS:

1Is Wentz ready?

He threw 24 passes in the preseason before being pulled for two broken ribs. He completed 12 and looked decent. But without a body of preseason work for Birds fans to judge the first-year QB out of North Dakota State on, they’re left to trust Philly’s coaching staff — and the man himself — that Wentz is the right man to start. “I got some really good experience in the first preseason game,â€? Wentz told the media Wednesday. â€œI definitely felt comfortable in that one. The game felt defi-

nitely slowed down for me and everything. I do feel very comfortable and going forward here Sunday is going to be exciting and I feel confident and ready.â€? “I have always felt that whenever Carson got his chance, whether it was next year or Game 3 or Game 10, I’ve always felt he would be ready,â€? offensive coordinator Frank Reich said, “or even for Game 1, I feel he’ll be ready.â€?

the 2theCan defense lift offense? Many have surmised that the key to the Eagles success is a potent defense that gives a low-scoring offense a chance. Is that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s plan? “I think we can help any quarterback by keeping the score down;

we can help quarterback by giving him good field position; we can help any quarterback by giving him the ball back, whether it’s on a third down stop or a red zone stop or whatever it is, Schwartz said. “There’s always going to be things [that help the offense]: We’ll score points or we might turn the ball over. Our job is to go out and get them stopped regardless of what happens.

the 3Keep Browns top

weapons in check The Browns are most analysts’ pick to finish last or near last in the NFL this season, and by all accounts the Eagles top chance for a win, at home in front of the home crowd. But there are a few big names to worry about — and taking Cleveland lightly could leave Philly with a loss to open the campaign. “As a defense, our job is to go stop the opponent, not to take anything else, not to

carry any other flag other than going out and stopping [Robert Griffin III] and stopping [Terrelle] Pryor and Joe Thomas and [Gary] Barnidge,â€? Schwartz said. â€œThey have some good players on offense and we are going to have to play our very best to stop those guys and get off the field on third down, create negative plays, create turnovers.â€? With Wentz a big unknown, keeping the Browns’ offense under wraps could be the deciding factor.

METRO.US WEEKEND, SEPTEMBER 9-11, 2016

SPORTS

Put your money on Vikings, Bills in Week 1 Here’s a look at how to pick ’em this week: ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

The best bets for NFL Week 1:

Minnesota Vikings (-2) @ Tennessee Titans Minnesota’s season came to a heartbreaking end, a missed chip-shot FG, in last year’s playoffs. The team had Super Bowl aspirations coming into training camp this year but that was seemingly derailed by a freak injury in training camp to Teddy Bridgewater. I am not so sure of that. The Vikings were carried on offense by Adrian Peterson in 2015, not their NFL second-worst pass offense. Sam Bradford was brought in for a 1st and 4th round pick just days after Bridgewater was ruled out for the season, indicating the Vikings are not ready to give up on this season. Bradford may not have the mobility of Bridgewater, but he can be a decent game manager. The pick: Vikings -2

Buffalo Bills @ Baltimore Ravens (-3) Buffalo may not be a playoff team, but they should get off to a good start with a healthy squad. Buffalo’s offense starts and ends with their running game and LeSean McCoy, who missed four games last year due to injury; he should be fully healthy on Sunday. Baltimore has been horrible at home dating back to 2014; they’re 1-8-1 ATS in their last ten games at M&T Bank Stadium. Joe Flacco’s best offensive weapons are Steve Smith Sr., whose best days are long gone, and 30-yearold RB Justin Forsett, who is ancient considering his position and is

Best of the rest Chicago Bears @ Houston Texans (-6) Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5) @ New York Jets Cleveland Browns @ Philadelphia Eagles (-4) Green Bay Packers (-4.5) @ Jacksonville Jaguars Oakland Raiders @ New Orleans Saints (-1) San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs (-7) Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Atlanta Falcons (-3) New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys (E) Detroit Lions @ Indianapolis Colts (-3.5) New England Patriots @ Arizona Cardinals (-6) Pittsburgh Steelers (-3) @ Washington Redskins Los Angeles Rams (-2.5) @ San Francisco 49ers

recovering from an arm injury. Expect the Bills to post a second straight season-opening upset. The pick: Bills +3

Miami Dolphins @ Seattle Seahawks (-10.5) As the biggest favorite on the board this week, the Seahawks are bound to be a popular survivor pool pick. They also seem like a good bet to cover this line. Despite a slow start to 2015 (they were 4-5 before rallying to finish 10-6), Seattle posted the fourth-best offensive YPG numbers in football. Whether its Thomas Rawls or Christine Michael in the backfield for Seattle, the Seahawks should be able to run roughshod on Miami’s rush defense that was ranked 27th last season. That will open things up downfield for Russell Wilson should he need to go there. The Dolphins’ 26thranked offense from last year seems up against it facing one of the NFL’s best defenses, and Miami’s 1-4 ATS record in their last five road games doesn’t inspire confidence. The pick: Seahawks -10.5

A healthy LeSean McCoy will make the Bills’ offense a much more dangerous unit.

If only they had Twitter when these Phillies’ moments happened Tim Tebow’s signing with the Mets got us thinking — what would have happened if Twitter existed during these other memorable moments? KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us

Twitter is at its best when something out of the ordinary happens. Whether it’s something really, really exciting or something on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, the social media tool

tends to bring out some interesting and creative responses to events that unfold in sports. Take Tim Tebow signing with the New York Mets. A Heisman-winning quarterback is now in the Mets farm system. That’s certainly not a common thing, which is why Twitter has been buzzing ever since word broke of the deal. On the heels of that, what have been — or would’ve been — three of the most tweetable moments in Phillies history?

Mitch Williams serves up Joe

ocal Handy Man

What makes something go viral on Twitter? An image that literally says 1,000 words. The 1993 World Series will long live in Phillies allure. The details are excruciating for Phillies fans, none more so than the Joe Carter death blow. The shot of Mitch Williams walking off the mound, head down, with Carter leaping in the air behind him would have been an instant hit on Twitter in 1993. Just think about the fun Twitter users would have had with that post? Williams would be photoshopped everywhere. That shot would have been the new “Wanna get away image.

more meme-worthy than Aaron Rowand’s unbelievable catch. In 2006, the same year Twitter was founded, Rowand broke several facial bones diving for a ball at the wall against the New York Mets. It was an extraordinary catch, but what makes this play so memorable is the images stuck in the minds of the sports fan. Whether it’s of Rowand all taped up with a black eye in his postgame interview or the actual shot of his nose catching the fence. The GIF of this play still finds its way around Twitter today, but imagine what it would have been like had that wild play happened today?

How would Twitter have looked in 1993 after Joe Carter’s walko?

at. That in itself would have gone viral on social media. Yet, it’s the player himself that would been something to see on Twitter. Drew was drafted No. 2 by the Phillies in 1997, but agent Scott Boras and the Phillies were almost $8 million off in contract talks. A loophole was discovered, which led

GETTY IMAGES

to Drew playing in an independent league that season before joining the St. Louis Cardinals the following season for only $7 million. What would the reaction be on Twitter if the Phillies’ top pick just said, “Give me my money or I’m walking? That would have been a recipe for mass rage.
