3 things you need to know PUTIN FIRMS CONTROL WITH BIG WIN FOR RUSSIA’S RULING PARTY
1
Vladimir Putin cemented his supremacy over Russia’s political system when his ruling United Russia party took three quarters of the seats in parliament in a weekend election, paving the way for him to run for a fourth term as president. Opposition activists and European observers questioned how free and fair the vote had been, however, although there were no immediate signs the result might spark street protests of the kind which erupted after the last such election in 2011. With most votes counted, United Russia, founded by Putin almost 16 years ago after he first became president, was on track on Monday to win 76 percent of the seats in Russia’s Duma, the lower house of parliament, up from just over half in 2011. SYRIA DECLARES CEASEFIRE OVER; US, RUSSIA SEEK EXTENSION
2
Syria’s military declared a weeklong cease-fire over on Monday and vowed to continue fighting, even as officials from the United States and Russia met behind closed doors in Geneva to try to extend it. What is likely to be the final attempt by the U.S. administration of President Barack Obama to find a negotiated solution to the five year old civil war appeared close to collapse. Secretary of State John Kerry said it was too early to call the cease-fire finished, and the United Nations said that only Washington and Moscow could declare it over, as they were the ones who had originally agreed to it. But both the Syrian army and the rebels spoke openly of returning to the battlefield. REUTERS

FLA. DECLARES NEIGHBORHOOD ZIKA FREE; CDC REMAINS CAUTIOUS
3
U.S. health officials on Monday continued to advise pregnant women and their partners to consider postponing non-essential travel to Miami to avoid the risk of exposure to Zika, even as Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared the city’s Wynwood neighborhood Zika-free and invited visitors to return. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement that the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami had been considered an area of active Zika virus transmission from June 15 to Sept. 18, 2016. It urged pregnant women who lived in or traveled to the neighborhood to consider getting tested for Zika. “We want to continue to emphasize to pregnant women that they still should consider postponing non-essential travel for all of Miami-Dade [County]. That is still in effect,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner. REUTERS METRO’S NEWS QUIZ

Ahmad Kahn Rahami, the man suspected of carrying out a successful bombing in New York that injured 29 people, as well as planting multiple bombs around the city and New Jersey, could not evade a massive manhunt determined to uproot a terrorist. Rahami is suspected of first striking in Seaside Park, New Jersey, where a trash can exploded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, just before the start of a Marine Corps charity run. No injuries were reported, and the incident mostly flew under news radar. Then at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a deafening explosion blasted apart a large dumpster on a bustling block of West 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues. Twenty-nine people were hospitalized for injuries from flying shards of glass and metal. Mayor Bill de Blasio labeled the incident as an “intentional act” and initially said that authorities did not have reason to believe there were ties to foreign terrorism. Shortly after the explo-
sion, a second bomb was discovered a few blocks from the blast in the Chelsea neighborhood. A wired-up pressure cooker, with a cellphone attached as a detonator, was found in a plastic bag on the sidewalk. Surveillance footage released later showed two scavengers discovering a suitcase containing the bomb. They removed the bomb and set it down on the ground, and made off with the rollaway luggage. Attention briefly turned to a Tumblr blog claiming responsibility for the act on behalf of the LGBTQ community. The blog was removed and proved to be a red herring as the NYPD, FBI, ATF and state police pursued other leads. Fingerprints taken from the pressure cooker led police to a more plausible suspect: Rahami, 28, an Afghanistan-born New Jersey man who was living and working at the location of a family-owned fried chicken restaurant on Elmora Street in Elizabeth. Surveillance video revealed clear images of Rahami at the site of the Chelsea bombing and a few blocks away where the pressure cooker was found. Just before 9 p.m. on Sunday night, a packet of pipe bombs turned up 500 feet from the Elizabeth train station, which also was found by two scaven-
Suspected terrorist Ahmad Khan Rahami was taken into police custody after an exchange of gunfire Monday morning in Linden, New Jersey. Metro has collected all the background information now known about Rahami: • He was born in Afghanistan on Jan. 23, 1988. • His last known address is in Elizabeth, New Jersey— where a backpack of pipe bombs was discovered on Sunday. • Rahami’s family operates a restaurant called First American Fried Chicken on Elmore Avenue in Elizabeth, and lives above the eatery. • Last year, Rahami’s father and brother sued the city of Elizabeth on grounds of ethnic discrimination because the city did not want them operating their restaurant 24 hours a day. A judge ruled in favor of the city, which required the restaurant to close at 10 p.m. • Following the judge’s ruling, Rahami’s brother returned to Afghanistan. • Rahami is said to have a passion for cars, especially those such as Honda Civics, which he souped up and raced, according to a neighbor. • He was described as friendly, and would sometimes give free fried chicken to customers. • He has reportedly made several trips to Afghanistan.
gers searching in a trash can. On Monday morning Notify NYC, a cellphone alert system, was activated for the first time with the message “WANTED: Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28-yrold male. See media for pic. Call 9-1-1 if seen.” Following a cascade of details and widely circulated images of the suspect, a resident of Linden, New Jersey, alerted police that he recognized the man he saw on CNN, Rahami, sleeping in the vestibule of Murdie’s Tavern. Linden police closed in
on Rahami just after 11 a.m. A bloody gunfight ensued as the suspect opened fire on the officers, injuring two, before he was hit and captured. Video of the gunfight and images of Rahami being loaded into an ambulance went public within minutes of the skirmish. Monday afternoon, after undergoing surgery at a Newark hospital for his wound, Rahami was charged with five counts of attempted murder and two gun charges. He currently awaits federal charges.

History of bombings in New York “A mild-mannered man,” as History described Metesky, lived with his sisters in Connecticut until entering a mental institution in April 1957, where he stayed until 1973.
KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Three bomb-related incidents took place over the weekend, two in New Jersey and one in Chelsea, but New Yorkers have an unfortunate, long history with bombs by terrorists and other anarchists.
Anarchists Bungle Bomb Intended for John D. Rockefeller, 1914
Labor leaders were not big fans of U.S. Steel mogul John D. Rockefeller, blaming him for the deaths of miners and their families in Colorado in April 1914. Anarchist leader and convicted felon Alexander Berkman and other anarchists and labor leaders thought blowing up Rockefeller’s Tarrytown estate would be the best revenge, according to the blog Ephemeral New York. On July 4, 1914, the attempted terrorists attempted to assemble the bomb from batteries and dynamite in a top-floor apartment of a tenement in an Italian neighborhood in Harlem. The bomb went off and killed three bomb makers and one of their girlfriends. “Simultaneously, the roof of the tenement house at 1626 Lexington Ave. was shattered into fragments and the debris of it and the three upper floors showered over the holiday crowds, some of it falling on roofs two and three blocks away,” Ephemeral New York quoted The New York Times as writing. Only one survived in

that blast, according to The Times. Berkman later admitted his involvement.
Horse-Drawn Bomb Makes a Statement on Wall Street, 1920
As the bells on Trinity Church rang noon on September 16, 1920, a horsedrawn carriage packed with 100 pounds of dynamite and 500 pounds of iron was detonated at the southeast corner of Wall and Broad Streets, the “most important junction” of Lower Manhattan’s Financial District, History reported. “That was the loudest noise I ever heard in my life,” J.P. Morgan employee Andrew Dunn later remembered, History reported. “It was enough to knock you out by itself.” A group calling itself American Anarchist Fighters took credit, although police later suspected the Galleanists, a gang of anti-government Italian anarchists led by Luigi Galleani. To this day, the culprit remains a mystery.
BRIEFS Off-duty court security officer fatally shoots would-be robber An off-duty state court officer shot and killed an armed man who attempted to rob him outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in Queens, police said. The 50-year-old officer was wearing a uniform and headed to his weekend job as a security guard at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday when he was confronted by the wouldbe robber near the coffee shop in the Jamaica neighborhood, the Daily News reported. As the officer was about to step into his parked car, the
man pulled out a gun and demanded cash and the officer’s weapon. The two men struggled and the officer shot the robber, a man in his 20s, in the chest. The man, whose identity wasn’t disclosed by police, was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he died. The Queens District Attorney’s Office is expected to investigate the incident. The officer, who works at the State Supreme Court on Staten Island, was taken to a local hospital with chest pains. GARY KANE
‘Mad Bomber’ vs. ConEd, 1951
In November 1940, a pipe bomb was found in Con Edison’s headquarters with a note that read, “Con Edison crooks, this is for you,” History reported. There were more attempts that year, until the person, dubbed ‘Mad Bomber,’ sent a note in December that read “I will make no more bomb units for the duration of the war.” After keeping his promise, the Mad Bomber began sending threats to the press again in 1951. In 1954, one of Mad Bomber’s creations went off at Radio City Music Hall. In 1955, he struck Grand Central Station, Macy’s, the RCA building and the Staten Island Ferry, History reported. The Mad Bomber was never found, but authorities believed him to be George Peter Metesky, an ex-employee of Con Edison. After a workplace accident in 1931, the company said Metesky was angry the company refused to pay disability.
An explosion triggered a six-hour fire at 18 West 11th St. on March 6, 1970. Two young women and another person survived and one “redhaired youth” was found dead beneath the charred remains of the building, New York Daily News reported at the time. The explosion was first blamed on a gas leak, but the Weather Underground, a leftist radical group was credited with the blast. Reports said that the group accidentally set off bombs intended for a dance at Fort Dix. “Terry [Robbins] had been told to do it a certain way, and he was too insecure in his knowledge to debate it,” Cathy Wilkerson, a member of the New York terror cell, recalled, Vanity Fair reported. “He cut off the discussion. He was the leader and he would take responsibility for how it was to be done. No one else spoke up.” Four days after Christmas in 1975, a bomb that had been placed in a locker at LaGuardia Airport exploded, killing 11 and wounding 75, according to CNN. Although many groups were suspected, including FALN, the Palestinian Liberation Organization, the Jewish Defense League and Croatian
nationalist Zvonko Busic, no group ever took credit and the crime remains unsolved. It was the deadliest attack in New York City since the Wall Street bombing of 1920, which killed 38, until the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.
‘Never Forget,’ Sept. 11, 2001
On a sunny day in September 2001, Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked three passenger planes: Two hit the Twin Towers in Manhattan and one was flown into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania as the passengers struggled to take the airplane back from the terrorists onboard. World Trade Center’s South Tower collapsed just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001. The North Tower fell at 10:28 a.m. Everyone on the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground were killed that day, according to History. In the towers alone, a reported 2,606 people were killed and more than 6,000 were wounded.
Times Square Bicycle Bomber, 2008
On March 6, 2008, a man rode his bicycle to New York’s Time Square and left a bomb at the Armed Forces Recruiting Station. He lit the fuse and took off. The bomb exploded. No one was wounded and the suspect on the bike remains a mystery. The bomb was constructed similar to devices left at the British Consul-
ate in May 2005 and the Mexican Consulate in October 2007, according to the FBI. In 2015, the FBI announced a $115,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the three incidents. “Moments before the device detonated, individuals walked by, unaware of the potential danger and imminent explosion,” said then-Police Commissioner William J. Bratton. “We are again reaching out to the public, urging anyone with any information to please come forward to assist us with this investigation so that the persons involved in this plot can be held responsible for this attack.”
Central Park Bomb Takes 18-Year-Old’s Leg, 2016
Made from easy-to-get products and chemicals, a homemade explosive detonated under 18-yearold Connor Golden as he jumped off a rock in Central Park on July 3, New York Daily News reported. The crude bomb packed in plastic, investigators said, blew off the Eagle Scout and University of Miami music engineering student’s foot when it exploded near East 60th St. and Fifth Avenue. Golden, who was in the city visiting friends, was rushed to Bellevue where his left foot and lower leg were amputated, People reported.

Unoccupied: Fifth anniversary of Occupy Wall Street passes quietly The fifth anniversary of Occupy Wall Street attracted only a smattering of occupiers. A small group unfurled a banner and displayed a “Capitalism is the Devil” sign on Saturday at Zuccotti Park in Manhattan, the New York Post reported. “There’s more speakers that there are protesters,” said a police officer at the park. Five years ago, hun-
dreds of people assembled in the park near Wall Street to protest against social and economic inequality. The occupiers proclaimed that “We are the 99 percent,” a slogan intended to underscore that the wealth of the nation is controlled by a fraction of the population. As many as 200 protesters camped in the park at for about two months. On Nov. 15,

2011, police in riot gear removed people from the
park, following complaints about unsanitary and unsafe conditions there. Some credit the occupy movement with fueling the fight for a $15 per hour minimum wage and for setting the stage for the presidential campaign of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Critics argued that the movement offered no solutions, no agenda. GARY KANE

A woman is claiming that her family was served a fried rat head with their meal at a Popeyes in Harlem. The meal was allegedly served at a Popeyes at 2730 Frederick Douglas Blvd. Rosemary
Thomas made the claim on Facebook Sunday, posting several photos of the supposed fried rodent. “This is clearly a rat and they have the nerve to have a 5 rating by the department of health,” she wrote in the post. She also added that the experience would have a ”lasting effect” on her daughter, niece and sister. DNAinfo reported that as of this April, the city’s Health Department gave the chicken chain an “A” grade. The DOH, however, reported last year “harborage or
conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.” A public health sanitarian was sent to restaurant following a 311 complaint Monday morning. A spokeswoman for Popeyes told DNAinfo that they contacted the health department, which didn’t’ find anything out of the ordinary at the restaurant Monday. Thomas was scheduled to bring her food to the Popeyes the same day and meet with the franchise owner for testing.

Gov. Christie said to know of lane closings Chris Christie has not been charged and has denied having knowledge of the alleged laneclosing scheme, which caused several days of gridlock and hurt local businesses.
Federal prosecutors opened their case on Monday against two former associates of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by saying he knew of their plan to snarl traffic at the George Washington Bridge to punish a mayor who would not support his re-election, according to media reports. Bridget Anne Kelly,
Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, and Bill Baroni, former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, are on trial for their roles in the September 2013 lane closures, which became known as “Bridgegate.” Prosecutors said Kelly and Baroni engineered the closures of the lanes,
which lead to New York City, with the pretext they were needed for a traffic study. They said the real motive was to retaliate against Mark Sokolich, the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, who would not back the reelection of Christie, a Republican. According to the Newark Star-Ledger and other

media, a federal prosecutor told jurors Baroni and former Port Authority official David Wildstein had “bragged” to Christie about the closures while they were underway, as they attended a Sept. 11 memorial service. Wildstein has pleaded guilty and is expected to testify for the government. He has claimed there is evidence showing Christie was aware of the scheme. Michael Baldassare, a lawyer for Baroni, said in his opening statement that Wildstein was “vindictive” and a “habitual liar,” who Christie had referred to as his “fixer,” and who should not be trusted. “The evidence will show their case is David Wildstein,” Baldassare told jurors. “The government made a deal with the devil and they’re stuck with him.” “Bridgegate” came to light in January 2014, shortly after Christie had
easily won re-election. But the scandal helped to erode his once-high approval ratings and was a factor in his unsuccessful run this year for the White House. Michael Critchley, Kelly’s lawyer, told jurors in his opening statement that his client was being made a scapegoat for the “Bridgegate” scandal. “They’re going to let no one, such as Bridget Kelly, or nothing, such as the truth, get in the way,” he said. Prosecutors will likely introduce emails and text messages between Baroni, Kelly and Wildstein to show they arranged the closures. Baroni and Kelly have pleaded not guilty to wire fraud, civil rights deprivation and conspiracy charges. The trial before U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton is scheduled to last approximately six weeks. REUTERS

BRIEF Second N.Y. man charged in Sept. 11-timed robbery plot A second New York man has been charged with participating in a plot to rob a store around the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in which his accomplices planned to wear traditional Muslim attire and display a fake bomb, federal officials said. Atthis Daugherty, 37, was arrested on Thursday and charged in a criminal complaint in federal court in Manhattan with conspiracy and attempted robbery, a spokeswoman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said on Monday. His arrest came two days after authorities brought
charges against Juneal Ali, 29, who they said planned to rob a check-cashing store in the Bronx borough on the 15th anniversary of the hijacked plane attacks on New York and Washington. According to charging papers, Daugherty participated in a meeting to plan the robbery, in which Ali and another individual were to would drive to the store dressed in Muslim attire, display a fake bomb and force employees to give them cash. While initially planned for Sept. 11, the robbery was postponed two days after the unnamed third accomplice reported too many people were around, the complaint said. REUTERS

Hillary Clinton took her campaign pitch to Philadelphia college students during a speech Monday at Temple University intended to increase her appeal among millennial voters. Clinton, who has for decades been criticized as “cold, seemed like she was striving to present an appealing maternal side to the college audience at some points. “More than any previous generation, you understand that all these various challenges are intersecting, and we must take them on together, she told the students. “No one will work harder to make your life better. I will never stop, no matter how hard it gets. Clinton went on to promise to take a stab at helping students refinance their loans. She also vowed to support her former opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders’ plan for tuition-free college for low-income residents. In attacking Donald Trump, Clinton described him as “a Republican nominee who incites hatred and violence like no one else we’ve seen, under whom “hate speech [is] being normalized.
“Despite this, I remain convinced America’s best days remain ahead of us, she said. “I will never be the showman my opponent is, and you know what, that’s OK with me. To any voter who is still undecided, I ask you to give us both a fair hearing. The Clinton campaign is stepping up efforts against Trump statewide as polls show an increasingly close race between Trump and Clinton for Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes. While polls shortly after the Democratic National Convention in Philly projected a 10-point lead for Clinton in the state, the most recent polls show that lead cut in half. The campaign is hosting events aimed at military and veterans families around the state this week, including on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, and on Thursday and Saturday in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Trump is visiting Pittsburgh Thursday to speak to attendees at the national Shale Insight Conference and Chester Township later on that evening. Clinton is getting some backup around the state from Katie McGinty’s campaign to topple Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey this fall. McGinty will campaign at the United Steelworkers Union Hall in Bethlehem on Tuesday.

Charlotte not budging on ordinance that spurred NC bathroom law The mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, refused Monday to back off an ordinance that had aimed to expand anti-discrimination protections for gay and transgender people in the state’s largest city but also sparked a controversial state law. The Republican leaders of North Carolina’s legislature said in a statement late Sunday they believed their colleagues would support repealing the law that voided the city ordinance — if Charlotte made the first move. North Carolina’s Republican governor and lawmakers blame Charlotte for spurring the state measure, which has drawn rebuke from major companies and sports organizations since it was passed in March. The state law, known
as House Bill 2, requires transgender people to use publicly owned bathrooms that correspond with the gender on their birth certificate and bars local ordinances protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination. A spokesman for Gov. Pat McCrory told local media last week McCrory would call a special session for legislators to consider a repeal of H.B. 2 if Charlotte rescinded its ordinance. But Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, a Democrat, said the city had no plans to reconsider the ordinance at a council meeting Monday night. “We appreciate the state wanting to find a solution to the challenges we are facing and applaud

the governor for recognizing the state should overturn H.B. 2, which the state can do at any time without any action from the City of Charlotte,” Roberts said in a statement. Calls for a repeal of the state law mounted last week after the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) pulled a total of 17 championship sporting events from North Carolina in protest of it. Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have ďŹ nally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry outâ€? and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oilâ€? and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can ďŹ nd out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. Lawsuit accuses NASCAR of racial discrimination Terrance Cox and his company, Diversity Motorsports Racing LLC, filed a lawsuit in U.S. district court in Manhattan against NASCAR, its parent company, International Speedway Corp., and 18 teams, according to court records.

NASCAR was hit with a $500 million lawsuit accusing the auto racing body of racial discrimination for preventing black-owned teams and drivers from competing, including in the Sprint Cup Series. The plaintiffs are also seeking an injunction requiring the defendants to “fully integrate the African-American community. In a statement, NASCAR said the lawsuit has no merit. “Diversity both on and off the track continues to be a top priority for NASCAR and its stakeholders, the organization said. “We stand behind our actions, and will not let a publicityseeking legal action deter us from our mission.
The plaintiffs said they sued after NASCAR refused to let them field a team or join its Drive for Diversity program, and last year told them to cease contact. Citing NASCAR’s website, the plaintiffs said none of the 48 drivers in the Sprint Cup, NASCAR’s top racing series, is black, and only one of the 18 teams has partial AfricanAmerican ownership. They also said only one driver in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series circuit is black. “Motorsports remain the most racially segregated sport in the United States, the complaint said. “NASCAR and ISC have been complicit in, and supportive of, the racially discriminatory envi-
ronment that virtually excludes African-Americans from meaningful participation. The lawsuit seeks $75 million in compensatory damages and $425 million in punitive damages. Ronald Paltrowitz, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said any funds would go toward groups that the plaintiffs sponsor to boost minority participation in motorsports. Diversity Motorsports was founded by Terrance Cox, who is chief executive officer, and Bob Schacht of Bob Schacht Motorsports, and is based in Mooresville, North Carolina. NASCAR is based in Daytona Beach, Florida, and has a Manhattan office. REUTERS

US Air Force names new B-21 bomber ‘Raider’ Northrop Grumman Corp.’s B-21 long-range bomber will be called “Raider,” U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah James said on Monday. The estimated $80 billion program has been shrouded in secrecy since its inception for fear of revealing military secrets to potential enemies. The bomber was named after the Doolittle raiders, who early in World War II carried out bombing missions over Japan, James said while speaking at a conference. Northrop won a contract in October 2015 to develop and build 100 of the new bombers. The stealth B-21, the first new U.S. bomber of the 21st century, is part of an effort to replace the Air Force’s aging B-52 and B-1 bombers, though it is not slated to be ready for combat use before 2025. Earlier this year, James unveiled the first image of the bomber and announced a contest to decide on a name. James and Air Force Chief of Staff David Goldfein chose the name after a panel narrowed down more than 2,000

submissions, an Air Force statement said. Sixteen bombers under the command of American aviator Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle bombed Tokyo and other places in Japan on April 18, 1942, when American spirits were at a low point, just four months after Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. To boost public morale, President Franklin Roosevelt asked the armed forces to respond to Pearl Harbor, and Doolittle, already retired, returned to active duty and the plan for the raid was hatched. Over the years, the legend of their mission — the first U.S. raid to
strike the Japanese home islands — has grown, spawning books and a movie and recognized by military and history buffs. Retired Lt. Col. Richard Cole, who recently turned 101 years old and was Doolittle’s co-pilot, was alongside James to announce the naming of the bomber.

Easy resolution unlikely for contentious Dakota Access pipeline A potential rerouting of a long-anticipated pipeline at the center of a protest in North Dakota would be a laborious and costly task, possibly delaying a startup by months and provoking further opposition from Native American and environmental groups who were instrumental in halting construction. The 1,172-mile Dakota Access pipeline was slated to start up by the end of the year, transporting more than 470,000 barrels per day of crude oil through four states into Illinois before it hooks up to another pipeline down to Texas. But in a stunning twist last week, the U.S. Justice Department and other federal agencies intervened to delay construction in what industry and labor representatives called an “unprecedented” move. The halt on the $3.7 billion project was the result of a groundswell of protest from Native American tribes and environmentalists, some of whom now are vowing to continue the fight until the project is permanently suspended. While there are a few options for rerouting the line, most still cross either culturally important lands to Native Americans or large waterways. The more extensive a reroute, the more likely that regulatory obstacles crop up. “We’re entering

unchartered waters if a reroute happens at this stage and I can’t think of another example of a case where this has happened,” said Afolabi Ogunnaike, a senior analyst at consultancy Wood Mackenzie. “Should a reroute take place, there are some major challenges.” North Dakota’s governor, Jack Dalrymple, told Reuters on Friday that he hoped regulators would give the go-ahead for construction to resume shortly. If that does not happen, an alternative solution does not appear to be easy to come by. Energy Transfer Partners, the company constructing the line, declined to comment. It had said it is committed to completing the project. The protest is concentrated in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, near Lake Oahe, a large and culturally-important reservoir located on the Missouri River in central southern North Dakota, where the line was sup-
posed to cross. The Army Corps of Engineers now needs to decide whether it correctly followed the National Environmental Policy Act and other federal laws. If they did not, the permit process may need to be restarted, which could take at least 120 days. It is unclear when the NEPA review will be finished. The other option — rerouting the pipeline — also presents substantial challenges. The surrounding land where the pipeline could cross has a number of national parks or wetlands, commercial and residential uses, or Native American reservations. An early proposal involved sending the pipeline from the Bakken shale, where more than a million barrels of oil is produced daily, a bit further north and crossing the Missouri north of the state capital of Bismarck. The current crossing is about 30 miles south of the state capital. REUTERS

Trump gets skewered and Clinton finds support at TV’s Emmy awards Trump, known for his rapid-fire responses on Twitter, had nothing to say about the Emmys on Sunday night. As the presidential election draws near, television’s stars didn’t hold back on their opinions at Sunday’s Emmy awards, some taking jabs at Republican nominee Donald Trump while others voiced support for Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton. During his opening monologue, Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel called out producer Mark Burnett, the producer of reality series “The Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice” which Donald Trump hosted, saying “who is to blame for the Trump phenom-
enon? That guy.” “If Donald Trump gets elected and he builds that wall, the first person we are throwing over it is Mark Burnett,” Kimmel said, setting the political tone of the show 50 days before America elects its next president. Burnett, who later accepted the best reality series Emmy for “The Voice,” joked on stage that he had just received a call from Clinton criticizing Kimmel for giving Trump “free publicity on ABC.” “I’m sure Donald was thrilled with him, I’m sure he’s emailing Jimmy right now saying thanks for the free media,” Burnett told reporters backstage. After winning best comedy actress for a fifth consecutive time for HBO’s “Veep,”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays flawed U.S. president Selina Meyer on the show, said “I want to personally apologize for the current political climate.” “I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics; our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary,” she said on stage. “Master of None” star Aziz Ansari, who penned an essay in June for the New York Times entitled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family,” quipped on stage, “I’ve decided I’m going with Trump.” “I’m recommending that we get rid of all Muslim and Mexican people from the ceremony. This would be so much easier at the Oscars,” the Mus-

lim Indian-American actor joked, hinting at the controversy over the lack of diversity at film’s Oscar awards.
“Mum, dad, you need to be escorted out immediately,” he added. Backstage, “Transparent” creator Jill
Soloway, who won best directing for a comedy series, criticized Trump for “other-izing people.” “He blames Muslims and Mexicans for problems ... This is other-izing with a capital O. He needs to be called out every chance we get for being one of most dangerous monsters to ever approach our lifetimes,” Soloway said. “Saturday Night Live” star Kate McKinnon won best supporting comedy actress and thanked Clinton, one of the people she plays on the NBC sketch series, and got a loud cheer from the crowd. In response, Clinton tweeted “Congratulations on your Emmy, Kate! Big fan of yours, too,” with a photo of McKinnon in character as Clinton. REUTERS

Fans upset by Christina Grimmie’s absence from Emmy memorial
There’s just too much going on with Heidi Klum’s shimmering cut out, high-slit Michael Kors gown.
Designer Christian Siriano knew there would be backlash for Anna Chlumsky’s custom shift dress with cascading cape. “We all knew it was going to be something fun and different and not everybody would get it,” he said. “And that’s OK.”
World-renowned chef, bestselling author and star of “Parts Unknown” Anthony Bourdain and his wife of nine years, Ottavia Busia, have split. Lucky for Bourdain, the breakup was amicable — we would not want to mess with Busia, an MMA fighter, aka, certifiable bad-ass. In a statement to Page Six, Busia said Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” work schedule, which has him traveling all over the world to film his culinary adventures,

Patrick Dempsey knows he can’t top Hugh Grant. The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum, 50, is the new second love interest in “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the third in the Renee Zellweger-led series and first since 2004’s “The Edge of Reason.” But his character, GETTY Jack, is IMAGES

nothing like Grant’s Daniel Cleaver. He’s the opposite of a jerk — nice and friendly and
perhaps a little too eager, especially compared to Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy. Dempsey talks to us about how his new film is a too-rare rom-com and his sideline as a professional race car driver. Rom-coms are weirdly thin on the ground these days. They’re not making these types of movies anymore. You try to find
one now and there’s nothing in production for the old style of romantic comedies. That’s why I think there’s such an appetite for this film, and for Bridget in general: Those types of characters just don’t exist, those very strong female protagonists in romantic comedies. It’s a bummer to think we may forget about them.
I have to admit I didn’t know you were a professional auto racer, if only because I don’t follow racing. You gave it up recently. Do you think you’ll go back? I would love to, but at that leveI of racing, it’s a profession in and of itself. It needs that type of attention. It’s a full-time commitment. I was in the WEC [World Endurance Championship], so you’re traveling around the world. It takes a week or two to do one race. You lose all this time with your children as well. So there’s a real balance that’s needed. I’m glad I had the opportunity to do it and would love to continue racing, but it’s
I met a young comedy writer and we were talking about “Who’s on First?” And he didn’t know what that was. I said, “You’ve got to be kidding me. You’ve never heard that?” It
a question of what the priority and focus is. So I’m not sure at this point. You’re actually trying to get a project off the ground about F1 racers. You could really show what it’s like to be in the middle of a race. You can watch a race from the point of view of a driver. But that’s not what I want to see. What I want to see is the drama surrounding it — what it takes to get into the car, what they’re dealing with on an emotional level. That’s far more interesting than trying to re-create a race. That doesn’t appeal to me.
was old when I was young. The idea that people don’t know Abbott and Costello and they’re comedy writers just goes to show that sensibility is really lost. It’s very sad.

How did you get The Beatles to trust you? Very easily. Most of the other reporters, the adult reporters, really despised
them. They would ask them questions like, “What do you eat for breakfast? Did you shower today? Do you wash your hair? Is your hair real? What kind of hemline do you like on a woman?” I basically asked them questions about what happened in the concert, about the reactions of the fans, about the war in Vietnam, about racial discrimination. I knew right away that they were intellectually curious. By asking them these questions and getting involved in a deep sense, I was able to show the world that they had tremendous intellectual curiosity. They liked that. One time I asked them if they had teenage daughters would they allow them to come to the concerts. And each of them said, “Absolutely not, it’d be too dangerous.” It’s interesting to contrast what you see of them here with “A Hard Day’s

Night,” which is a more heightened and fictionalized version of them. I saw that movie for the first time with them, at the Shelburne Hotel in Atlantic City. Somebody brought up a bunch of cheesesteaks and popcorn, and they had a guy come up with a big 35 mm camera and showed the movie on a screen. I was able to talk to them. They were very uncomfortable looking at themselves. This movie shows how draining and relentless their touring schedule was. You can see why they’d want to stop it entirely and retire to the studio. Did you get a sense of how they were able to find bits of time in the early days to actually write their songs? I was on the plane when they were writing “Eight Days a Week.” They had a tape recorder in the back, and they were playing the beginning of the song. I told them I thought the beginning was a little too slow. Now, I know as much about music as an electrician knows about brain surgery. But that was just my opinion. If they took my advice, then it really should be Lennon-McCartney-Kane on that song.

Bacteria can contaminate dropped food in under one second. DMITRY BELYAEV Metro World News letters@metro.us
It’s long been claimed that eating food off the floor is fine as long as you pick it up and eat it in under five seconds. But the so-called five second rule has come under scrutiny from researchers at Rutgers University, who found it can take as little as one second for food to become

contaminated, depending on the surface it lands on. Scientists tested the contamination time of watermelon, bread and butter, plain bread and gummy candy when they fell on stainless steel, ceramic tile, wood and carpet. The surfaces were coated with Enterobacter aerogenes, a microorganism similar to Salmonella. After testing each combination of food, surface and exposure 20 times, experts came to the conclusion that the wetness of the food and topography of the surface play a significant role in
how quickly bacteria can transfer from the floor to food. “One of the most interesting results is that there is a high crosscontamination from any surface to watermelon [wet food]. It picks up bacteria in less than one second,” said lead author Donald Schaffner. “We have advanced the science of cross-contamination and made people aware that the ‘five second rule’ is not true,” Schaffner added. “Hopefully people will make better decisions about eating foods that have fallen on the floor.”

The Mets struck gold when they acquired Yoenis Cespedes at the trade deadline last season, as he hit 17 home runs in his first 41 games as a Met and jump-started New York’s lackluster offense. Lightning has not struck twice as Jay Bruce, the former Cincinnati Red, has hit a paltry .181 with only four home runs and 11 RBIs in 38 games in a Mets uniform. A similar tailspin earned Michael Conforto a demotion earlier this year, but Terry Collins says Bruce won’t be going anywhere. “He’s got to battle through it, Collins said of Bruce when addressing reporters recently. “I’ve talked to him at length about it, and one of the things he’s done throughout his career is play through things. He’s never been a guy who has sat very much. Bruce himself has been insistent on attempting to wrestle through his prolonged slump by playing every day. “I think every year players go through something whether it’s physi-

cal or mental,â€? Bruce said. “They go through slumps, go through skids, and it’s always something different.â€? He later added, “I’m someone who kind of hangs my hat on coming in every single day, preparing the same way and ‌ playing pretty much every day. [Collins] asked me and I just told him. ‌ I didn’t need a break here or there or whatever. I’m confident in my ability to get out of funks and just keep going forward. But I also told him I completely understand that he has to put a lineup [together] that he feels gives us the best chance to win. But I also feel like I’m one of the best nine options.â€? The validity of Bruce’s last statement has to be called into

question as Alejandro de Aza, who’s improved demonstrably after a painfully slow start (his OPS is .738 after the AllStar break compared to .521 before it), continues to ride the bench. Juan Lagares, who unexpectedly returned from the DL last Friday, now adds to the list of outfielders behind Bruce on the depth chart as Bruce continues to appear in the starting lineup. Bruce’s poor play has led to speculation that the Mets will not pick up his $13 million option for next season, something that was considered a sure thing when they brought in the thenleader in RBIs in the National League. The most frustrating part of this ordeal is that
Johnathan Lucroy, the All-Star catcher the Mets were pursing but ultimately passed on near the deadline, is tearing the cover off the ball in Texas. Since leaving Milwaukee, Lucroy has 10 home runs and 28 RBIs to go with a .289 batting average in 37 games as a Ranger. He would’ve been a great upgrade at catcher over Travis d’Arnaud, who’s batting .250 in 68 games this year with just four home runs. D’Arnaud’s also been a defensive liability, which has forced the Mets to start Rene Rivera more often than they’d like. The Mets will have to hope Bruce can turn things around before the playoffs, or the season could come to an unsatisfying end.

Jets legend Joe Namath got the last laugh over fellow Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, as the Jets ran roughshod over the Buffalo Bills Thursday night, but not all is right with Gang Green. Following their 3731 win at Buffalo, most of the Jets players were happy to get to .500, but were also quick to admit there’s still much room for improvement. Their head coach, for one, gave some praise, but readily admitted there’s still lots of work to be done. “We’re still getting better [but] we have to get better at a lot of things,â€? said head coach Todd Bowles. “We’re just going to continue to work. ‌ We need to find different ways to win ball games [because] we’re not going to win every game scoring 37 points.â€? Bowles’ quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, indeed looked sharp as he led a Jets offense that hung 37 points and 493 yards of total offense, including 28 first downs, on a Bills defense that was led by Rex and Rob Ryan. The output was a team high under offensive co-

ordinator Chan Gailey, and the fifth-best total for the franchise since 1970. Having two 100yard receiving performances (Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall) and almost a third (Quincy Enunwa who was just eight yards shy), plus a 100-yard rusher (Matt Forte) all at the same time means the Jets have the capability of being one of the league’s truly elite offenses. But that doesn’t mean all is completely right. The right tackle position is still in flux, as Bowles noted they’ll likely still go with a two-man rotation of Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale heading into their Week 3 battle in Kansas City. The Chiefs annually boast one of the best defenses in the league, and Arrowhead Stadium is always one of the toughest venues for opposing teams,
so the Jets will need to be even better this week. Defensively, the Jets have been great in most areas, namely the defensive line, and cumbersome in another, such as the secondary. The pass rush has been stellar so far, but Gang Green knows they’ve got some things to fix in the secondary. The sample size is still small, but cornerback Darrelle Revis has shown a penchant for allowing the big play. There have been some “busts in the coverage over the top of Revis, as Bowles reasoned, but it’s still an alarming trend for a secondary that has a future Hall of Famer in Revis and a ball hawk in Marcus Williams. New York has allowed passing plays of 54, 71, and 84 yards in its first two games. It’s something they’ll definitely need to shore up in time

- Reports are that Marshall has a sprained MCL, but no structural damage, although Bowles said nothing deďŹ nite will be announced until Wednesday’s oďŹƒcial injury report. - Bowles noted that Decker is dealing with a “sore shoulder.â€? - The Jets signed tight end Braedon Bowman to the practice squad, and have released defensive lineman Claude Pelon. Bowman was originally waived after Week 1 to make room for the return of Sheldon Richardson following his one-game suspension to start the season. - Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles has been inactive for the ďŹ rst two games, but is expected to return this week and be ready for the Jets. for Sunday. Bowles was firm in his standing that they’ll correct the issues and didn’t sound like it’s too alarming just yet, despite noting the mistakes are “Day 1 training camp stuff.â€? “It’s one guy here or there, but we have to clean that up,â€? Bowles said. “The communication has to be cleaner. ‌ We shouldn’t be busting. We have to make sure we correct that.â€?
