3 things you need to know WELLS FARGO CEO ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ‘UNETHICAL’ PRACTICES
1
The chief executive officer of Wells Fargo & Co. on Tuesday apologized for the bank’s opening as many as two million bogus customer accounts that could generate fees for the lender. “I accept full responsibility for all unethical sales practices,” CEO John Stumpf told a congressional panel. The bank’s board of directors is examining what action it should take against company executives, Stumpf told the Senate Banking Committee. Earlier this month, the lender agreed to pay $190 million in penalties and customer payouts to settle a case in which bank employees created credit, savings and other accounts without customer knowledge. Thomas Curry, the comptroller of the Currency, said in prepared testimony that his agency is considering action against individual Wells Fargo executives. REUTERS
UN SUSPENDS AID AFTER ATTACK; KERRY SAYS CEASE-FIRE ‘NOT DEAD’
2
The United Nations suspended all aid shipments into Syria after a deadly attack on a convoy carrying humanitarian supplies, while Washington, expressing outrage at the attack, said a week-old cease-fire was not yet dead. The attack, described by the United Nations, Red Cross, Western countries and rescue workers on the ground as an air strike, drew condemnation from much of the world. Russia and the Syrian government denied that their air forces were responsible for destroying a convoy unloading aid. Moscow presented an entirely different explanation, saying it believed the convoy had not been struck from the air at all but had been destroyed by fire, and suggesting that rescue workers who filmed the aftermath were somehow to blame. DESPITE FLAWS, PAPERLESS VOTING MACHINES REMAIN WIDESPREAD
3
One in four registered voters in the United States live in areas that will use electronic voting machines that do not produce a paper backup in the November presidential election despite concerns that they are vulnerable to tampering and malfunctions, according to a Reuters analysis. The lack of a paper trail makes it impossible to independently verify that the aging touch-screen systems are accurate, security experts say, in a year when suspected Russian hackers have penetrated political groups and state voting systems and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said the election may be “rigged.” Election officials insist the machines are reliable, but security experts say they are riddled with bugs and security holes that can result in votes being recorded incorrectly. FBI and other law enforcement officials enter a fried chicken store that is owned by Mohammad Rahami. GETTY IMAGES
Bombing suspect’s father reveals more about son’s alleged terrorist ties Mohammad Rahami, who owns First American Fried Chicken in Elizabeth, NJ, spoke briefly to the media Tuesday and said that in 2014 he went to federal agents to report his concerns over his son’s behavior after he stabbed another one of his sons in a fight. But the father’s allegations were ultimately dismissed. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
Investigators’ best evidence that Ahmad Khan Rahami has terrorist ties has come from his own father, who reported him to the FBI two years ago, officials said, and now his wife is talking to officials. “Two years ago, I go
to the FBI because my son was doing really bad, OK?” he told The New York Times. “But they check almost two months, they say, ‘He’s OK, he’s clean, he’s not a terrorist.’ I say OK.” “Now they say he is a terrorist. I say OK.” Although a review was conducted, it’s not clear if Rahami was interviewed by the FBI. Officials believe that Rahami might have been radicalized during his numerous trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan; one visit to Pakistan lasted from April 2013 until March 2014. In 2011, Rahami visited Kandahar, Afghanistan and Quetta, Pakistan, his immigration record reflects, CNN reported. Quetta is considered a stronghold of the Taliban. Rahami was questioned before re-entering the United States as he was every other time, but again satisfied officials with his
answers. On that trip, Rahami married his wife, Asia Bibi Rahami. Asia Bibi Rahami reportedly left the United States before Saturday’s bombings and is currently in the United Arab Emirates where she is speaking to U.S. officials. She is expected to fly back early next week. Asia Bibi Rahami was approved to enter the United States in 2012, but it isn’t clear if she actually came to the U.S. at that time, CNN reported. There was some trouble with her immigration paperwork in 2014 and Rahami contacted U.S. Rep. Albio Sires, but after Asia Bibi Rahami found out she was pregnant and needed an immigrant visa for the baby, Sires told CNN that the consulate advised Rahami to travel to Karachi, Pakistan. Rahami told him it was too dangerous, Sires said, according to CNN.
Sires told CNN he was unsure of what happened next. Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin and chairman of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, requested more information on Asia Bibi Rahami’s immigration history in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on Tuesday. In a blood-stained, bullet-pierced notebook found on Rahami after he was arrested Monday were reportedly mad ramblings about “killing the kuffar” (nonbeliever), about the soldier responsible for the Fort Hood shooting and praise for Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaeda propagandist killed in a drone strike. His reference to alAwaki is particularly telling as the imam is still a very powerful influence in jihad inculcation, according to The New York Times.

Transportation jobs growing at a faster rate than the whole NYC economy combined The rate of growth in the transportation and warehouse sector from 2010 to 2015 was 12.4 percent (about 12,000 jobs for a total of 112,000), exceeding the overall growth of the city’s economy of 9.4 percent over the same period.

Transportation-sector job growth ranked among the fastest-growing in New York City in the last five years, according to a report from the Center For An Urban Future. What’s remarkable is that while a lot of the economy’s expansion is in the food services and home health care sectors, those jobs are often lowpaying and part time. On the other hand, transpor-

tation jobs provide many full-time roles that earn a very livable average annual salary of $53,417, the center notes. “These are middleclass jobs,” said Jonathan Boles, the center’s executive director. “They are giving people an entry
point to the middle class.” This includes jobs from subsectors such as ground and transit — bus drivers, subway operators, bus mechanics — and air transportation, such as airline desk personnel, pilots, flight attendants, people wash-
ing the planes. And people in the water transportation subsector, such as cruise ship captains and ferry operators, could earn upward of the average $104,000 a year, according to the center. “In the last two years
De Blasio announces early progress on green initiatives across NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday early progress on green building programs in conjunction with the eighth annual Climate Week held in the city. NYC’s Climate Week runs from Sept. 19-25. With a new president of the United States being elected in just weeks, “Climate Week NYC 2016 will gather leaders from business and government to demonstrate how continued investment in innovation, technology and clean energy will drive
profitability and lead us toward net zero emissions,” according to the website. The de Blasio administration announced early progress on programs that aim to reach “80x50,” an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The green building programs are assisting with retrofits across 3,800 buildings — representing 8 percent of the built square footage of New York City — and are on track to reduce greenhouse gas emis-
sions by nearly 1.5 million metric tons. In addition, the mayor’s office said the programs are set to create more than 1,000 local jobs by 2025. “The cumulative effect of our green buildings policies proves not only that New York City is on track to achieve our ambitious 80x50 goals,” de Blasio said. “It also demonstrates that we continue to set the pace toward becoming the most sustainable big city in the world.” KIMBERLY M. its really been exploding,” Boles said, adding that this part of the industry had gradually grown in the last 10-15 years, but the growth has been extraordinary since 2013. “There are 8.5 million people in this city and climbing. There are more
people to move around this city and that has led to real job growth, as there have been more trains and buses, more couriers and messengers as the economy expanded,” Boles said. “It’s one of those things the city should consider to nurture,” Boles said, referencing Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ferry expansion initiatives. “It provides good paying jobs that don’t require a college or graduate degree.

New York jail guard pleads guilty to cover-up in inmate’s death As part of a plea deal, Taylor agreed not to appeal any prison term of 21 months or less. A guard at New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges that he tried to cover up an assault by a fellow officer that led to an inmate’s death in 2012. Byron Taylor, 32, entered his plea in federal court in Manhattan to charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and perjury, one month before he and the other guard, Brian Coll, were to face trial over the death of Ronald Spear. Taylor apologized in court for obstructing the investigation into the 52-year-old man’s death. “Today is me accepting responsibility for my wrongdoing,” he said. As part of a plea deal, Taylor agreed not to appeal any prison term of 21 months or less when he is sentenced on

Dec. 20. Department of Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte said Taylor would be fired. The case is one of a number of recent prosecutions targeting Rikers employees as authorities seek to stem violence and corruption that have long plagued New York City’s main jail complex.
BRIEF Citi Bike hosting free outdoor bike-in screening of ‘The Goonies’ Fans of “The Goonies” may have many memorable scenes from the classic ’80s movie — but who could forget Brand (Josh Brolin) stealing a bike from a little girl after he discovers his new tires have been popped. The film that shows how central bikes are to childhood adventures will be showing this Thursday at 7:20 p.m./dusk for free at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Sponsored by Citi Bike, the “outdoor bike-in movie” will celebrate its recent expansion in Brooklyn, Harlem and the Upper East and Upper West Sides. Transportation Alternatives will be providing free valet bike parking for anyone who arrives to the event on a personal bike. Citi Bike will also offer valet service at a special “mobile station” for riders at the bandshell, but nonbikers are also welcome.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has sought to implement reforms to help rectify problems at Rikers Island, one of the country’s largest jail facilities with about 10,000 inmates. Prosecutors said that on Dec. 19, 2012, an altercation took place between Coll and Spear, who had kidney problems, after the guard told
Spear that a doctor he had sought to see was not available. Prosecutors said Coll punched Spear several times in the face and stomach and repeatedly kicked him in the head while he was on the ground and restrained by two other officers, Taylor and Anthony Torres. Spear was pronounced

dead soon after, prosecutors said. They said that Coll, Taylor and Torres sought to cover up the cause of Spear’s death by filing false reports and by lying to investigators and, in Taylor’s case, a federal grand jury, Torres is cooperating with authorities after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice and file false reports. Coll, 47, has pleaded not guilty to charges including one count of death resulting from deprivation of rights under color of law, which carries a potential life sentence. His trial was scheduled for Oct. 18. In 2014, New York City agreed to a $2.75 million settlement with Spear’s family. Zoe Salzman, the lawyer for Spear’s family, said on Tuesday that the family hoped the criminal case “will stop correction officers from assaulting and killing other incarcerated people.” REUTERS

Attendees are just asked to bring blankets and chairs, since there will be no formal seating for the event. Moviegoers can grab something to eat at the event from food trucks, or a free snack from Clif Bar, which will also provide small bike repairs on site. Reduced-cost Citi Bike memberships will be available to attendees who sign up for Citi Bike for the first time, and Lyft ambassadors will also be on-site offering swag and ride credits. Guests are asked to RSVP for the event here. Premovie activities will take place 6-7:20 p.m. Enter at Ninth Street or 11th Street at Prospect Park West. METRO
Hold on to your helmet. New York City ranks fourth on the list of the 50 Best Bike Cities of 2016. Every two years Bicycling magazine conducts a comprehensive study of 100 cities to determine the best places to bike. This year the Big Apple rounded out the top five, along with Chicago (No. 1), San Francisco (No. 2), Portland, Oregon (No. 3) and Seattle (No. 5). The prestigious ranking is not the arbitrary judgment of a biased New Yorker: Researchers utilized census and transportation data from 100 cities, consulted with experts from organizations such as People for Bikes and The League of American Bicyclists, spoke to advocates and surveyed everyday riders. They took into
consideration miles of bike lanes, the percentage of female riders (an indicator of the safeness), and even the number of cyclist-friendly bars. New York’s high ranking is also linked to the measures the city has taken to improve safety for pedestrians, specifically the adoption of a robust Vision Zero policy that reduced citywide speed limits to 25 mph. Mayor Bill de Blasio had committed an additional $100 million to the installation of bike lanes on notoriously dangerous Queens Boulevard, and delivered on the promise to add another 50 miles of bike lanes across all five boroughs in 2016. As a result of the extensive safety improvements and bike-lane accommodations (which

began mostly under Mayor Michael Bloomberg), cycling in the city increased by 83 percent between 2010 and 2014. Not only is the terrain challenging and exciting,
but cyclists might be able to outpace motorists on the street: according to data from Citi Bike Midtown bicycles go faster than taxis by 2 mph. AMANDA MIKELBERG

Officials: US believes Russian aircraft hit Syria aid convoy The United States believes two Russian aircraft attacked an aid convoy near Aleppo in a strike that shattered a one-week truce, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, but Russia denied involvement. Despite the military blame game over Monday’s deadly attack, diplomats struggled to save the U.S.-Russian cease-fire agreement that took effect on Sept. 12. The incident, in which 18 trucks from a 31-vehicle convoy were destroyed, looked likely to deal a death blow to diplomatic efforts to halt a civil war now in its sixth year. Two Russian Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes were in the skies above the aid convoy at the exact time it was struck late on Monday, two U.S. officials
told Reuters, citing U.S. intelligence that led them to conclude Russia was to blame. Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman denied the assertion, telling reporters at the United Nations the U.S. administration “has no facts to support the claim, adding: “We have nothing to do with this situation. Earlier, Russia, which denied its aircraft or those of its Syrian government allies were involved, had said it believed the convoy was not struck from the air at all but had caught fire because of some incident on the ground. The Syrian Red Crescent said the head of one of its local offices and “around 20 civilians had been killed, although other death tolls differed.

The predicament of the Hanjin Miami, one of 10 U.S.-bound ships stranded by the Hanjin bankruptcy, illustrates one way that disputes over ships, ocean containers and even truck trailers to haul the shipping boxes have stranded at sea some $14B of goods around the world. Failed South Korean cargo line Hanjin Shipping Co. Ltd has found the money to unload a full container ship waiting outside a New York-area port. But there is another problem: Once unloaded, the empty vessel may not be able to go back out to sea. Since filing for court receivership on Aug. 31, the world’s seventh-largest container carrier has caused chaos for many retailers at a time when they are getting goods for the holiday shopping season. The National Retail Federation on Tuesday urged U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker to find a way to clear up the confusion. “The impact on small and medium-sized companies could be particularly devastating if this situation is not resolved in a timely manner, the group said in a letter. Hanjin has the money to dock its Hanjin Miami, Federal Maritime Commissioner William Doyle, whose agency regulates international shipping, told an industry event on Friday. But the Miami is not being allowed in port because of a dispute about empty Hanjin shipping containers, which the Miami normally would load
up as ballast to exit port. Without those empties, the ship “will not be able to depart the harbor because it would not have the air clearance to navigate under the Bayonne Bridge — even at a deadlow tide,â€? said Doyle. Without a way to leave, the ship could tie up a berth. “There are so many disputes right now attached to empty containers that the terminal is not going to load the empties back onto the ship,â€? Doyle said. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey declined to comment, as did an attorney for Maher Terminal, which operates the marine terminal in Newark where the Hanjin Miami is expected to dock. The Hanjin Miami is currently off the East Coast, about 300 miles from New York, according to Reuters Eikon data. The Bayonne Bridge, which held the title of world’s longest arch bridge for 45 years after it opened in 1931, presents a unique challenge to Hanjin. But other ports also are struggling with questions of who pays for terminal charges and what to do with empty containers. The complexity increased on Monday after a South Korean judge told Hanjin to cancel its ship charter agreements and return empty vessels to their owners. In the wake of the decision by the South Korean judge, an empty Hanjin Miami may become the responsibility of Reederei NSB, which manages the ship on behalf of its owner, an affiliate of Conti Holding of Munich, according to Reuters Eikon data. A spokeswoman for Reederei and a U.S. lawyer for Hanjin did not respond to requests for comment. A Scientific Hunch Pays Off…
Doctors Discover New Hope For Memory Loss In a new landmark study, participants, frustrated with their memory, experiencedan average 115% boost in brain power. Here’s how it happened… Boston, Mass.: In a crowded laboratory, a team of the world’s top scientists were caught wildly celebrating a groundbreaking discovery...“Memory Loss Can Be Reversed!” And this time it’s for real. Rich Anderson, an 84 year-old study participant excitedly reports, “I actually feel smarter now! Things are much easier to remember. When someone asks me about my day, I tell them exactly what I did, where I went. And I’m quick to respond. No more struggling to remember! It’s nice to feel that clear again.” And he’s not alone.
IMPOSSIBLE RESULTS The average participant in the Boston Brain Study saw an enormous boost in their ability to remember names, faces, birthdays. A few tested were even able to memorize a full page of bible text. The results were that remarkable! People taking the pill are excited. They now think faster and appear to be much sharper. With an average, 35% increase in their processing speed and brainpower. “It’s truly astounding. People came into the study apparently scattered and distracted by everything. After taking the pill we saw quicker thinking...clearer thoughts...and lighting fast responses.” We couldn’t believe what we were seeing said Gerard Elfman, cofounder of the study.

“MEMORY FOG” CLEARED If you struggle with failing memory, you’re not alone. Millions go through the very same frustration you do every day... You forget names of people you really should know. You can’t find your car in the parking lot. You keep losing your phone, your car keys, and have a hard time concentrating on anything for very long. If you’re tired of living this way, there is good news. You don’t have to live that way anymore! The first step is to accept that failed memory is not simply just a part of getting older. You can fix it by flooding your brain with special “power nutrients” that latch onto suspect brain cells and restore them back to normal again. And now thanks to the groundbreaking work of the doctors and scientists who tirelessly worked on the now famous Boston Brain Study mentioned above, you can now experience the same brain-boosting effects the participants did. Because the remarkable formula we’ve been talking about is now available on a limited basis to the readers of this article. It’s called RecalMax. And it’s changing everything we know about how to reverse a failing memory forever.
SUPERIOR SCIENCE I know there are lots of other memory formulas on the market but RecalMax is different. It’s the only formula based on the groundbreaking results found in the Boston
Brain Study. RecalMax goes way beyond any other solution for your memory. It’s a revolutionary advancement that took a full fourteen years to develop. No other formula has had a 97.7% success rate. And no other formula goes to work as fast, repairing your cognitive brain function right where it starts...inside the deepest recesses of your brain. And it’s completely safe — even if you’re taking prescription medications along with it.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS As you get older, blood flow to your brain drastically slows. When this happens, critical nutrients and oxygen-rich blood are unable to reach your brain. And when your brain is starved of the essential components it needs to survive, your precious brain cells die, you begin to lose your memory and your ability to stay clear and concentrate. That’s what made the results of the Boston Brain Study so interesting — the scientists found that nutrients such as L-Arginine and L-Citruline can bring back blood flow to your brain by simply increasing levels of memory-boosting nitric oxide to your brain cells. The result is an dramatic lift to your memory, clarity and recall. Typically, RecalMax’s special nutrients are pretty difficult for your body to absorb, which limits their potential and effectiveness. But that’s why RecalMax is so different. The experts behind the pill have proved that your memory could be restored faster if these special nutrients could be absorbed into your body faster.
THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE The results were astonishing. Soon after taking RecalMax, both men and women experienced an immediate: • 115% improvement in both word and name recall • 35% increase in brainpower • 49.5% improvement in concentration • A Massive 54.7% boost in mental energy • A 63% lift in memory strength • 82.5% increase in clearer thinking
INTIAL USERS THRILLED RecalMax is giving hope to people who struggle with memory frustration every day. People who are tired of living with the embarrassment of “being scattered”. People who deal with the reality of memory loss every day… Nancy Redding, age 79, says, “I don’t want ever want to have someone manage my life. So my memory is very important to me. I need to be able to manage my life, my house, and my financials. RecalMax has allowed me to do all of this. I take it every day and I don’t ever want to be without it.” Charlie Walters, 83, says, “I have several different health problems...I guess it comes with old age. I’m always at the doctor. But no matter how many times I’d write my appointments down I’d always be late or go on the wrong day. It was embarrassing. But now, since
taking RecalMax, I haven’t missed a single appointment! I’m absolutely thrilled with this stuff. Please send me another bottle right away.” Patrick Stella, 68, says, “I used to forget stuff. I’d walk around the house with my glasses on my head and tear apart the house trying to find them. My keys would be in the car and I’d be looking in the house for them. It’s embarrassing to forget, especially important things. Before, I’d say on a memory scale of 1 to 10 I was on a 3. Now I’m probably definitely 9 or 10.”
100% RISK-FREE OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR READERS RecalMax is a groundbreaking breakthrough in memory health that’s clinically proven help you take back your memory, clarity and recall. It helps reestablish proper blood flow to your brain and helps give you a whopping boost and mental clarity and memory power (even in the most difficult cases) Look, it’s simple...do something about your memory now or just live with it forever. The choice is yours. Oklahoma launches criminal probe into shooting of unarmed black man A lawyer for the officer told media outlets that Shelby fired her weapon after Crutcher failed to comply with commands. A criminal investigation into a police officer in Oklahoma who shot and killed an unarmed black man seen on video with his hands in the air was underway, authorities said. Officer Betty Shelby shot Terence Crutcher, 40, after his sport utility vehicle broke down Friday. Crutcher’s family called the shooting a criminal act and is seeking charges. The case is the latest in a string of shootings of unarmed black men by U.S. police that have raised questions of racial bias. In one video shot from a police helicopter, a person is heard saying Crutcher is not following instructions from police. A voice from the helicopter then says, “that looks like a bad dude too, could be on something.” An officer is seen with a weapon drawn before Crutcher drops to the ground, and a female

officer can be heard on police radio saying: “Shots fired.” The video shows Crutcher on his back with what appears to be blood oozing from his torso. A separate police dash cam video also shows the officer with a weapon drawn and following Crutcher as he walks to his vehicle with his hands in the air. A pop is heard as he appears to place his hands on the vehicle and he falls a few seconds later. Crutcher’s twin sister, Tiffany, said her brother was a churchgoing man who had enrolled at Tulsa Community College to better his life. On their 40th birthday about a month ago, he sent her a text message saying he wanted to make their family proud. “That big ‘bad dude,’ his life mattered,” she told a news conference Monday. Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said in a statement
that the criminal investigation will be thorough and he will make sure “the facts fit the law.” The deadly shooting gained national attention after the release on Monday of the police videos, which Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said he found “very disturbing, very difficult to watch.” The U.S. Justice Department has launched a separate civil-rights investigation. Scott Wood, a lawyer for Shelby, told the Tulsa World that Crutcher ignored repeated commands from the officer and reached for his pockets even though he was told not to do so. “He has his hands up and is facing the car and looks at Shelby, and his left hand goes through the car window, and that’s when she fired her shot,” said Wood. Shelby has been placed on administrative leave. One of the officers in the helicopter is Shelby’s husband, police said. REUTERS

Macy’s, which operates the namesake Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s department store chains, had hired 85,000 temporary workers for last year’s holiday shopping season, down from 86,000 in 2014. The company has been struggling with sliding sales, hurt by unseasonable weather, lower tourist spending and stiff competition from online retailer Amazon.com Inc. and off-price rivals such as TJX Cos. Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds of knee pain sufferers have NY Pain MD New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Can Supplements Do The Same Thing?
Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.
No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.
Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the "C-Arm" allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing procedures without Precision Arthritis Targeting (P.A.T.T.)can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. If you had viscosupplementation treatments without Presision Arthritis Targeting Technology and did not get good results - this may be why. “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The keys are to not wait, get a good evaluation from an expert and make sure precision arthritis targeting is used to make sure you have the best chance for success.”

Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery requiring months of rehabilitation. Some doctors think modern treatments done early enough can keep baby boomers from going under the knife.
Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis the better the results. The key to trying to avoid knee replacement surgery is doing the correct treatment as soon as possibly” What is the “correct treatment?” “That depends,” said the director. “There is no one answer when it comes to medical conditions. nee arthritis is no different. That’s why, if you have knee pain, you should have it evaluated by a doctor who deals with and treats knee pain every day,” added the director. For many knee arthritis pain sufferers the right treatment is iscosupplementation a preparation of Hyaluronic acid is applied directly into the knee joint using Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. Hyaluronic acid is the natural lubricant and shock absorber of your joints and is found to be decreased in arthritis sufferers. This is similar to running your without oil. Obviously, the sooner you put oil back in the car - the less damage will be done. That’s why some doctors feel early vis cosupplementation gets the best results and is so important for avoiding surgery.

Refugees are people,” said spokeswoman Michelle Green, adding that the company would refrain from further comment, “as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing.” Admission of Syrian refugees has long been a politically sensitive issue, although the country has admitted far fewer than many close allies. Trump has said that violent militants could enter the country posing as refugees. In 2015, Democratic President Barack Obama announced plans to admit 10,000 Syrian refugees this year, sparking fierce criticism, mostly from Republicans who said the plan could put Americans at risk. His administration announced in August that it would meet that goal.[ The younger Trump’s
tweet drew return fire from the Clinton campaign and many Twitter users. “Thankful my grandfather was allowed into this country and not compared to a poisonous skittle,” Josh Schwerin, a national spokesman for Clinton, posted on Monday. Twitter user Neal Rogers on Tuesday, tweeted, “I’d rather die eating a handful of Skittles than live a single day with @ realDonaldTrump as president.” But Trump adviser Jack Kingston, a former congressman from Georgia, defended the tweet in an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday. “What he was doing was making an illustration. I don’t think he was comparing refugees to candy at all,” he said, saying some percentage of refugees are going to be “bad actors” without giving specific details. “What we need to do is say: We’re going to be humanitarian … but the reality is we need to make sure, as much as possible, who’s coming into America and what are their views on America?” Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. The hashtag #SkittlesWelcome was trending on Twitter in the United States, as social media users flooded the microblogging site with jokes mocking the tweet. REUTERS

Skeptical of Russia, Clinton seen going toe-to-toe with Putin When Hillary Clinton attended her first major White House meeting on Russia in February 2009, the new secretary of state insisted that she wanted to play a leading role in President Barack Obama’s effort to “reset” U.S. relations with Moscow. But while Clinton became implementer-inchief for one of Obama’s signature first-term initiatives, she was consistently more skeptical than most of his top aides about how far Russian leader Vladimir Putin was prepared to go in turning the page, according to current and former U.S. officials. That stance is indicative of how she would go about dealing with Moscow if she is elected president on Nov. 8, aides to both Clinton and Obama told Reuters. With relations with Moscow already plumbing post-Cold War lows, the aides and veteran Russia watchers said she would likely take a harder line
than Obama or Donald Trump, who has praised Putin as a strong leader. Dealing with Putin, who is flexing his geopolitical muscle from Ukraine to Syria to cyberspace, will be among Clinton’s biggest foreign policy challenges -— one made more daunting by the personal bad blood between them. Jake Sullivan, a former State Department aide and now Clinton campaign advisor, said Clinton could consider the shipping of lethal arms to Ukraine government forces and the creation of no-fly or safe zones in Syria. Obama rejected both. While such moves could further stoke tensions and might even face resistance from some U.S. allies, Sullivan said in an interview with Reuters that Clinton could manage ties with Russia effectively because Putin would “respect her as U.S. president, her strength, her clarity, her predictability.” REUTERS

Angelina Jolie files for divorce Stop everything you’re doing and take in this breaking news: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, aka Brangelina, are divorcing, TMZ reports. Jolie filed for divorce, citing irreconciliable differences — allegedly due to a conflict over Pitt’s parenting techniques. She is requesting physical custody of the six kids, asking the judge to grant Pitt visiting rights. The two were married in 2014 and have been together since 2004. Of course, there’s more to it than disagreements about the kids. A source told the New York Post that Jolie dumped Pitt after a private eye caught him cheating with “Allied” co-star Marion Cotillard. Pitt’s excessive drinking, weed smoking and bad temper have also given Jolie cause to break it off, TMZ notes. An In Touch Weekly exclusive revealed further details that may have led to the split. A source told the weekly that Pitt’s

departure for the Adriatic Coast earlier this month upset Angelina, who was expecting him to spend the end of summer vacationing with the family at their French estate, Miraval. And even before leaked rumors of Pitt’s alleged affair with Cotillard, the two had fought over their “sexually charged scenes” in “Allied.” A source told InTouch that Pitt will ask for joint physical custody of the kids.
Fallon defends Trump interview, plays nice with Hillary This election season is so overheated not even Jimmy Fallon can make it out alive. The internet (or the one that’s terrified of Trump, anyway) has been none too happy with the late-night host, who had The Donald on last week did more than fail to call him out on whatever 50 terrible things he’d just said. He also failed to not tinker with that dyed muskrat atop his head. TMZ

caught a tuxedo’d Fallon walking into a limo and pestered him about it. They started light, asking what it’s like to touch his hair. (Fallon compared it to the stuff inside an Easter basket.) When it came to all the hoopla over him normalizing a bigoted monster who might help bring forth End Times, Fallon defensively pointed to the obvious: “Have you seen my show? I’m never hard on anyone.” He also pointed out he was having Hillary
on, in the interest of balance (or its 2016 election year equivalent, anyway). Sure enough, our only hope for averting the apocalypse was on “The Tonight Show” last night, and Fallon didn’t even grill her about Benghazi or Vince Foster. Instead he jokingly donned a surgical mask, asked if Bill was a good nurse (“He was very solicitous,” Clinton replied) — you know, the usual Fallon stuff not worth mentioning.
Jim Carrey is being sued for the wrongful death of Cathriona White In September 2015, Cathriona White, girlfriend of funny man Jim Carrey, died of an apparent suicide — devastating friends, family and the celebrated actor. She was found surrounded by prescription painkillers, a blood-pressure medication and a sleep aid. A toxicology report released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office listed four types

Burton accuses Carrey of having a hand in White’s suicide by providing her with drugs when he knew she was prone to depression. According to TMZ, three of the medications were found in pill

Like father, like son Scott Eastwood, whose dad is Clint, talks about his role in “Snowden and just doing his job.
Scott Eastwood plays an intelligence agent who doesn’t jibe well with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s whistle blower in Oliver Stone’s “Snowden. OPEN ROAD FILMS
firebrand’s contribution to the debate over the stillexiled whistleblower. True, both Stone and the elder Eastwood voted for Reagan in 1980. (Yes, Oliver Stone once voted for Reagan.) But Stone veered to the left, while Clint, in a recent, instantly infamous Esquire interview, said he was “a little bit of everything. (He also said he might go with Trump.) Does the younger Eastwood stray far from the tree? Whatever the answer is, he’s not as forthcoming about his beliefs as Clint. When asked how he feels about Snowden, especially after making a film that more or less portrays him as an American hero, he’s cryptic. “It doesn’t really matter, Scott Eastwood replies with a cool shrug. “My opinion isn’t
really worth that much. He does admit he finds “Snowden to not be a mere valentine to Edward Snowden. “I think the film gives you a chance to draw your own conclusions, he says. “It shows the emotional journey of what he went through, lays out the facts, then lets you decide. It doesn’t ram it down your throat, which I’m very happy about. Scott Eastwood plays Trevor, one of the no doubt many pro-spying types Snowden met while working at the NSA. The intelligence officer sees nothing wrong with warrantless (and often horrifying) surveillance. Whatever he believes, it’s clear Scott Eastwood sees himself as just an actor doing his job. “It’s a director’s vision, he says. “I come in and I play a role. He even respects Stone. “He’s definitely an artist. He’s old school. He knows what he wants; he’ll tell you if you’re not doing it — which I like. I like guys like that.

Like his pops, Scott Eastwood is a man of few words. It really is surreal having the son of Clint Eastwood in front of you. Unlike his father, the actor’s eyes are a sharp blue, and his hair’s blond. come across while snacking for a chance to win $50,000, they received over 100,000 submissions. OK, so maybe the contestants were equally inspired by love of money as love of Cheetos. Over the 10 weeks of the contest, Cheetos judges selected a weekly winner, who were each awarded $10,000 and had their photo displayed in an online Cheetos Museum. To decide the ultimate winner, they opened it up to popular vote. To celebrate this outpouring of love from the Cheetos Nation, today
and Thursday there’s a pop-up, real-life Cheetos Museum, where you can view art installations of the virtual snack-shots at Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall. The museum is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. — because of course Cheetos, snack of the people, are a democratic foodstuff. Over 40 images, which include Cheetos shaped like an electric guitar, Lady Liberty and Abe Lincoln, will be on display, along with “coveted pieces” from Chester’s collection. At 10:30 a.m. today, there will be a reveal of the grand prize, $50,000-winning Cheeto shape. New residential buildings to note
A new 20-story apartment building on the Upper West Side would barely raise an eyebrow, but 170 Amsterdam is an eyecatcher. Designed by Handel Architects, the 230-unit rental contains an exterior of elongated diamonds, an unusual design that’s functional. It’s the structural support for the building, which frees up space normally taken up by interior load-baring supports. The exoskeleton is light-colored concrete that emulates the limestone buildings of nearby Lincoln Center. Completed in 2015, available one-bedrooms are renting for approximately $4,500 and twobedrooms for $6,800.

A new crop of landmark residential buildings is rising in New York City. They may not be officially designated as such, but they promise to be distinctive structures that help us quickly gain our bearings when leaving the subway or emerging from a building. “The projects are distinctively urban and contribute to a more exciting and beautiful New York City,” said Georgi Ann Bailey, executive director of the American Institute of Architects New York State. Here is a sampling of what’s new in rental housing, and its costs.
La Central La Central in the South Bronx may be NYC’s most ambitious effort to create affordable housing. Along with 992 units, the plan calls for a YMCA, a rooftop farm and a Bronx.Net TV studio viewable from the sidewalk, a la the “Today” show. Designed by FXFowle, La Central would consist of five buildings. Rents would range from $1,070 for a family of three earning $38,850, to $2,780 for
household incomes up to $101,010.
9 DeKalb Ave. This dramatic luxury rental promises to be a new landmark for Brooklyn, and for much of the city, from which it also will be visible. At 1,066-feet tall, the SHoP Architects’ design reaches Manhattan heights to produce Brooklyn’s tallest building. Rents promise to be sky high, but some with earthbound incomes could luck out. Roughly 20 percent of its 500 apartments are to be designated affordable, though company officials declined to elaborate.
The Crossing at Jamaica Station The individual homes and small apartment buildings that make much of Jamaica’s housing stock are about to get two big siblings that will create an instant skyline for this Queens neighbor-
hood. Slated to start construction in early 2017, the Crossing at Jamaica Station would consist of 26- and 14-story buildings containing 669 rental apartments and 35,000 ground floor retail spaces. The buildings would contain mixed rents, according the architect FXFowle’s website, though a firm spokesman said it was too early to discuss rents.

Urby Staten Island Suburban Staten Island is getting an urban look. Leading the way is Urby Staten Island, a 900-rental unit development in two, five-story, glass and steel buildings. The first phase, a 571-unit building arranged around a 4,500-square-foot organic farm, opened earlier this year. Studios rent for $1,735, one-bedrooms for $2,165 and two bedrooms for $3,310. Urby Staten Island was designed by Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners.

Up-and-coming NYC neighborhoods for renters
Young New Yorkers have simple needs: love, a good job and an affordable apartment to wake up in without experiencing a total loss of self-respect. Every month, more people seem to be competing for more costly housing, pushing the search to neighborhoods you never knew existed or previously wouldn’t consider. Upon our request, NeighborhoodX, a real estate analytics startup, came up with seven “emerging neighborhoods” that are in various stages of change. “Once you get a critical mass of people in an area, that begins to attract amenities and then it becomes less a neighborhood of necessity and more a neighborhood of choice,” said NeighborhoodX co-founder Constantine Valhouli. These new neighborhoods — though hardly new to families who’ve lived there for generations — can still be found
midtown than much of northern Manhattan. Mott Haven is served by the 2, 4, 5 and 6 trains. The median rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,950. BROOKLYN

in Manhattan, but those in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx often have a shorter subway ride to midtown or downtown, said Jonathan Miller, president and CEO of Miller Samuel Inc., a real estate appraisal and consulting firm. And because two roommates can live cheaper than one, we are looking at two-bedroom apartment rents. Moving from most affordable to more expensive: BRONX
The Grand Concourse is the aptly named New
York City version of Paris’ ChampsÉlysées. Planned at the end of the 19th century, the Concourse was soon lined with Art Deco and Art Moderne architecture. The burning of the South Bronx in the ’70s took it down a few pegs, but the neighborhood is rebounding with the renovation of many buildings and large stretches, now city landmarks. The Grand Concourse is served by B and D subway trains. The median two-bedroom apartment rents for $1,900.

BRONX
Mott Haven is an old industrial area at the southern end of the Bronx with a concentration of low-income housing projects and three historic residential districts. The past decade has seen the conversion of industrial buildings into loft housing and offices, along with new construction. The attraction is no mystery: It’s closer to
Flatbush is a residential neighborhood stretching southsoutheast from the bottom of Prospect Park to include Brooklyn College. The neighborhood is diverse ethnically and in housing types; there are apartment buildings, row houses and large Victorian homes. Flatbush Avenue is the bustling commercial
street that includes the classic Kings Theater, which has been spectacularly restored into a performance space. The neighborhood is served by the 2 and 5 trains. The median rent for a two-bedroom is $2,250. QUEENS
Woodside is served by the elevated 7 train, the M and R trains and even a Long Island Rail Road stop. That easy access to midtown and a supply of reasonably priced rentals has kept Woodside a popular area. Continued on Page 26

Originally an Irish neighborhood, Woodside is more diverse now, though Roosevelt Avenue contains a series of Irish pubs. Along with neighboring Sunnyside, Woodside has a growing food scene as diverse as its population. A median two-bedroom apartment rents for $2,500. QUEENS
Ridgewood is tied to Manhattan by the L and M trains (the opposite end of the M line that serves Woodside) which then run through Brooklyn. That connection may be responsible for the growing number of generally young, former Brooklyn residents settling in this Queens neighborhood, known for its many two- and three-story townhouses. With those younger residents have come a much-noted food scene

Hamilton Heights was named after Alexander Hamilton, who spent his last two years at a home preserved today as the Hamilton Grange National Memorial. Its growing popularity has more to do with the housing stock here and less to do with the Broadway musical about this founding father. This northern Manhattan neighborhood slopes down to the Hudson River and features blocks of attractive houses and apartment buildings. It’s served by the A and D trains. The median two bedroom rents for $2,700.
Yorkville in Manhattan came to be called Little Germany for the German immigrants who settled there in the late 1800s. Today, Yorkville’s character is linked to the Upper East Side but it seemed to lose some of that luster due to the disruption from construction of the Second Avenue subway. With the subway scheduled to start by year’s end bringing transit service directly to the neighborhood, Yorkville seems to be undergoing a resurgence. The medianpriced two-bedroom rents for $2,950 per month. LEN MANIACE

The rainy weather in Pittsburgh did what seemingly no amount of player suspensions could — slowed down the Steelers’ offense. And it didn’t matter, they bested the Bengals and won despite getting just 39 yards from Antonio Brown.
Injuries are becoming a theme in the top five this week, as the Panthers will lose Jonathan Stewart for a couple weeks. The run game didn’t slow down against the 49ers though, with Fozzy Whittaker grabbing a 100-yard day on 16 carries.
Stefon Diggs has one good game and one outstanding game this season, and Sam Bradford looks perfectly content to look Diggs’ way. The run game, ineffective long before Adrian Peterson left the game injured, is the only major flaw right now in Minnesota.
The Bengals had themselves in the game against the Steelers until both final drives ended in fumbles (one a desperation pitch on the game’s final play). They’ll have a third-straight tough opponent when Denver comes to town, and a third-straight close finish seems likely.
For Philadelphia fans, one brutally familiar stat came out of the Chiefs’ loss to Houston: 19 rushing plays for 6.3 yards per carry, 41 passing plays for 4.2 yards per play. Spencer Ware’s performance in Week 1 highlighted Kansas City’s embarrassment of riches at running back. So he had 12 touches Sunday.

Demarcus Ware’s injury hurts, but no one has shown any signs of being able to stop this pass rush yet this season. In Week 3, the Bengals may be a little better equipped to try than the Colts were, and we’ll see how the Broncos fare outside the friendly confines of Mile High for the first time.
It’s a shame to see Jimmy Garoppolo injured after the start to the season he enjoyed: beating the Cardinals in their backyard and building a 21-0 lead on the Dolphins before he had to leave. Getting him back in time for Thursday’s matchup with the Texans will be a tall order.
The Cardinals bounced back from their opening-week loss to the Patriots in a big way, embarrassing Tampa Bay. The joyride may well continue when they travel to Buffalo in Week 3. Watching Larry Fitzgerald through two weeks (and 13 seasons) has been a joy.
The Texans’ new pieces are gelling, as Will Fuller notched his second 100-yard receiving day in as many career games. The win over Kansas City was a big moment, as the Chiefs beat the Texans twice in Houston in 2015, including the Texans’ brutal dismissal from the playoffs.
The Jets’ offense may have never played as well as it did in the Thursday night victory over Buffalo. Matt Forte found the end zone three times; Brandon Marshall returned from injury mid-game to hit 100 yards receiving and was joined there by Eric Decker.

A phone call meant for his sister changed Jeremy Epstein’s life and helped set the course to help re-elect President Barack Obama to a second term. Epstein is now a journalist who works for USA Today Sports Media Group, but on that fall day in 2012 he was a relatively anonymous student. The call to the home of his parents from the Gallup Poll was for his younger sister. The group was interested in gauging her eligibility to ask a question at the presidential debate to be held at Hofstra University. But at 17 years old, she was ineligible, so Gallup settled on talking to her older brother, who at the time was a 20-year-old enrolled at Adelphi University. Epstein answered a few questions and agreed to a background check by the Secret Service. He didn’t think much of it at the time; in fact, he assumed that nothing would come of it. But a few days later, Epstein received a call inviting him to be a part of the audience for what was a town-hall-style debate. He might even ask a question. Epstein signed up but, again, didn’t think much of it. It wound up being the start of a process that would see him become a national sensation and change his academic focus to journalism from exercise science. “Since the debate I got a taste of what I really enjoyed doing, which was being in the journalism environment, Epstein

told Metro. “I got steady phone calls and interview requests for about a year. And I have worked hard to get my foot in the door. The perception might be, ‘Oh, he appeared on TV a few times and now he thinks he is the next best thing,’ which couldn’t be further from the truth. On the day of the debate, Epstein submitted his questions to the debate moderator, CNN’s Candy Crowley. He sat in on meetings and preparation for the participants of the town hall — this was a full-day event that included an orientation. There was down time, lots of it, but rumors among the participants began to swirl that Epstein’s question was going to make the cut. And not just make the cut, but that he’d be the first to ask a question. All in front of 65 million viewers on television. He called his mother to let her know. Indeed, Epstein got the first question. As he stood up, he locked eyes with President Obama — then noticed that Gov. Mitt Romney was walking toward him to answer the question.
“As a 20-year-old college student, all I hear from professors, neighbors and others is that when I graduate [that] I will have little chance to get employment. What can you say to reassure me — but more importantly, my parents — that I will be able to sufficiently support myself after I graduate? Epstein asked. In the answer, Romney promised him a job. “I haven’t heard from him since that night, Epstein said. Epstein is busy these days, but he doesn’t yet have a full-time job (he ended up voting for President Obama, FYI). He interned at Fox News Radio as a college associate. He transferred to Hofstra from Adelphi and graduated from Hofstra with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in political science. After college, he spent two years covering the New York Jets with JetsInsider.com, and he parlayed that experience into covering practices and games to working for Slam City, part of USA Today’s Sports Media Group.

Aries A financial matter will leave you uncertain regarding your choices and current situation. Look at the long-term effects of following your passion.
Libra Check out new prospects and explore possibilities that will encourage philosophical or spiritual growth. Live life instead of standing on the sidelines.
Taurus Someone will take advantage of you if you are too gullible. Look at the variables involved before you choose to shoulder responsibilities.
Scorpio Uncertainty will surface if you let your emotions take control. Use your skills and knowledge to help you overcome any obstacle. Trust in the facts, not in rumors.
Gemini Listen carefully and read between the lines. Deception is apparent when dealing with a person in your life. Ask direct questions to find out what is going on.
Sagittarius Open up about your feelings, and listen to what others have to say. Your relationships will be challenged if you exaggerate.
8
Cancer Expand your interests and open up your house for meetings and activities that will lead to new friendships and opportunities. Your generosity will help you advance.
Capricorn The way you present who you are and what you have to offer is important. Knowledge and expertise alone will not do the trick.
6
Leo Helping someone or participating in a cause you believe in will encourage others to respect you. Taking action will show others that you mean business.
Aquarius A chance to turn something you love doing into a profitable endeavor looks promising. Set up meetings and plan your strategy to ensure a successful launch.
Virgo Look at the big picture and refuse to let your emotions take charge, which could cause you to damage your reputation. Think before you do something.
Pisces Playing games with someone’s emotions will not help you get your way. Try to keep the peace. Diplomacy will be required. EUGENIA LAST
