3 things you need to know SCHOOLS CLOSE IN CANADIAN PROVINCE AFTER BOMB THREAT
1
Canadian police evacuated all schools in the eastern province of Prince Edward Island on Wednesday after a bomb threat, but found no explosive device. About 19,000 students at 62 schools were taken to safe locations in their communities around the island off Canada’s Atlantic coast. It is the country’s smallest province with a population of about 146,000. “The minister of public safety just informed me that all of the schools’ children and personnel are safe. The situation is under control,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa. In Prince Edward Island’s capital of Charlottetown, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Kevin Bailey said at a press conference he was aware of separate threats in the nearby province of Nova Scotia and the United States. A black man killed by police in a Charlotte, North Carolina, parking lot had ignored commands to drop a handgun that officers said he was holding, authorities said on Wednesday hours after 16 officers were injured in protests sparked by the shooting. The trouble in Charlotte unfolded as demonstrators in Tulsa, Oklahoma, demanded the arrest of a police officer there who was seen on video shooting to death an unarmed black man who had his hands in clear view at the time. The two deaths were the latest to raise questions of racial bias in U.S. law enforcement and have stoked a national debate on policing ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. REUTERS
GOOGLE LAUNCHES ALLO, BETS ON AI TO SPICE UP CHATS

Google-parent Alphabet Inc launched Allo, a messaging app that incorporates Google’s search feature and a chatbot that uses machine learning to “improve” itself over time. The new messaging service, which was unveiled in May, will compete with Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp and Messenger. The much-anticipated launch comes a month after Google rolled out Duo, its video calling app. Allo features a chatbot powered by Google Assistant, a virtual personal assistant like Apple Inc’s Siri. Users can call up the assistant in a chat by typing “@google” followed by a search query and the results will be displayed in the chat itself. “The more you use it, the more it improves over time,” Amit Fulay, group product manager, wrote in a blog post. Court rules black men may have legitimate reason to run from the police The Supreme Judicial Court cited a report from the ACLU that showed racial profiling in Boston. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @MetroBOS

Black men who run from the police in Boston may have good reason to do so, according to a ruling by the state’s highest court that is being applauded by civil right advocates and criticized by law enforcement. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Tuesday overturned the 2011 conviction of a Boston man who had been arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm after he fled from police searching for three burglary suspects. In its ruling, the court noted that a disproportionate number of black men are stopped by Boston police and that a black person could be justified in fleeing from an officer to avoid being sub-
jected to racial profiling. “Such an individual, when approached by the police, might just as easily be motivated by the desire to avoid the recurring indignity of being racially profiled as by the desire to hide criminal activity,” the court wrote in its opinion. The ruling vacated the conviction of Jimmy Warren, who was arrested on Dec. 18, 2011, when police were investigating a burglary in Roxbury. Officers were looking for three black men, one wearing a red hoodie and another wearing dark clothing, according to court records. An officer spotted Warren and another man both wearing dark clothing walking in a park. When the officer shouted to them, they fled. The officer caught up with Warren and spotted a Walther .22 caliber firearm in a nearby front yard. When asked if he had a license to carry the weapon, Warren replied that he did not. He was charged and later convicted with unlawful possession of a firearm.
In overturning the conviction, the court cited a 2014 report by the ACLU of Massachusetts that found Boston police officers were more likely to conduct “field interrogation observations” or FIOs with people of color, as well as Boston city police data on FIOs. The justices determined that police “lacked reasonable suspicion” to stop Warren and that the fact that he fled should not be used against him. “With only this vague description, it was simply not possible for the police reasonably and rationally to target the defendant or any other black male wearing dark clothing as a suspect in the crime,” the justices wrote. The justices noted that a person running away from police is suspicious in “appropriate circumstances.” They add, however, that state law protects a person’s right not to speak to a police officer and even to walk away from an officer. That right might certainly be exercised by a black person attempting to avoid a police
encounter motivated by racial profiling, the justices suggested. “The finding that black males in Boston are disproportionately and repeatedly targeted for FIO encounters suggests a reason for flight totally unrelated to consciousness of guilt,” the court’s opinion reads. The court’s ruling is “truly powerful and important,” said Matthew Segal, legal director at the ACLU of Massachusetts. “If courts say that evading the police in and of itself is suspicious, then that would undermine the constitutional right to walk away,” Segal said. “Everyone has a right to say no to a police stop unless the police have “reasonable suspicion.”

MIT offers MicroMaster’s credentials as a step toward advanced degree MIT pioneered the program, which has since been adopted by 13 universities. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @MetroBOS

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is pioneering an online way for students to progress toward achieving postgraduate degrees. The Cambridge school launched the “MITx MicroMaster’s credential” last October, and now 13 other universities have adopted the program. MicroMaster’s allows students to take an entire semester of master’s-level courses online at low cost and earn a certificate of completion. If the student chooses to continue their education, they can apply

to complete their master’s degree in a single full semester on campus at MIT. The program provides learners worldwide with the opportunity to take any of the first semes-
ter’s courses online. Students who score well on a subsequent comprehensive examination can earn an MITx MicroMaster’s, “and their performance will significantly enhance
their chances of being accepted to the full master’s program,” the school said. “We are proud to be a pioneer for higher education’s next step in engaging learners worldwide,” said Sanjay Sarma, vice president for open learning at MIT, in a statement. “Not all high-potential master’s candidates can afford to spend a year or more on campus, so it’s important to provide multiple pathways to a degree.” Access to all course content is free and open to anyone, a representative from the office of digital learning said. Students pursuing a certificate pay $150 per course and students going for a MicroMaster’s credential additionally pay a fee for the exam. The first MicroMaster’s program focused on courses in supply chain management (SCM). More
than 127,000 students have enrolled in at least one course (representing 189 countries) and more than 7,000 have signed up for verified certificates, according to MIT. “Supply chain management is the backbone of the global economy,” said Chris Caplice, executive director of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. “The need for professionals who can design, manage and operate these complex global supply chains continues to grow. This is why we created the online courses that comprise the MicroMaster’s credential in supply chain management.” Students take courses on the edX platform, a nonprofit online course provider founded by Harvard University and MIT. “Discovering the MITx MicroMaster’s program was a life-changing experience,” Mohamed
Mabchour, who lives in Morocco, told MIT News. “I would have never dreamed of taking topranking SCM classes if not for edX! This credential will help me broaden my knowledge in SCM and get a credible certificate to advance my career, while also helping me to achieve my dream of applying for MIT’s SCM master’s degree on campus.” Now, edX has partnered with 13 other universities to offer 18 MicroMaster’s programs. Students can take online courses in growing fields like artificial intelligence to project management, according to MIT. “I believe MITx MicroMaster’s has given many people around the world, especially those in developing countries, a hope to fulfill the dream of continuing their education at a top-tier American institution,” Mabchour said.

BRIEFS Landlord convicted of assault sentenced to Islam 101 class A Somerville landlord convicted of pushing a Muslim tenant down a ight of stairs must undergo an introductory class about the faith as part of her sentence, after the Supreme Judicial Court upheld the sentence Wednesday. Daisy Obi, a longtime landlord in her 70s, pushed the tenant down about 15 feet of stairs in front of her children in 2012, according to a report in the Boston Globe. Witnesses testiďŹ ed that Obi, who is a minister at the Adonai Bible Center in Somerville, terrorized the Muslim family with slurs and other verbal abuse while living on her property, WBZ reported. A judge ordered Obi to spend six months in the Middlesex County House of Correction and to take an introductory class on Islam, and provide her probation oďŹƒcer with written documentation that she had done so. “You have to respect the rights of people of the Muslim faith. You have to respect all people.’’ Somerville District Court Judge Paul M. Yee Jr. told Obi
during the sentencing, according to court transcripts obtained by the Globe. “That’s the message I’m sending out to you. That is the message that I’m sending out to the community. ‌ Even you, wanting to be a person of God, have to [show] respect for all people.â€? The state’s highest court upheld the sentence, but only on procedural grounds: Obi’s lawyers did not raise concerns about the unusual requirement during appeals in lower courts, so the SJC justices could not consider the legality of it. “While conditions of probation that touch on religion and risk incursion upon constitutionally protected interests should be imposed only with great circumspection, the defendant raised no such concerns before the trial court judge, and there is no information in the record that would allow us to evaluate her claims,’’ Justice Barbara Lenk wrote. “Because she raises these claims for the ďŹ rst time on appeal, they have been waived.â€? Obi must also notify future tenants of her conviction, according to the Globe. CHRIS CAESAR

Lawmakers grill Mylan CEO over EpiPen steep price increases The EpiPen is an automatic injector designed to treat life-threatening allergic reactions to anything from nuts to bee stings, delivering a dose of epinephrine through a quick jab in the thigh. U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday blasted steep price increases for Mylan’s EpiPen emergency allergy treatment as they grilled the company’s Chief Executive Heather Bresch at a congressional hearing. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called Bresch to testify after the company raised the list price for a pair of EpiPens to $600 compared with $100 in 2007, when it acquired the product. Congressman Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrat on the committee, said Mylan “jacked up” the price of the life-saving product “to get filthy rich at the expense of our constituents.” “After Mylan takes our punches they’ll fly back to their mansions in their private jets and laugh all the way to the bank,” Cummings said. The price increases ignited a national controversy in August, as a growing number of families protested and said they were unable to afford the device through their health insurance. Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz of Utah
noted that Mylan said it would soon sell a generic version of EpiPen for about $300. “Suddenly feeling the heat Mylan has offered a generic version and cut the price in half, so that does beg the question what was happening with that other $300?” Holding up an EpiPen, he said: “The actual juice that’s in here that you need costs about a dollar.” The hearing comes after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton previously called Mylan’s price increases outrageous, while both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have called on federal agencies to investigate Mylan’s business practices. Several U.S. states are probing the impact of the price increases on government healthcare programs such as Medicaid. Mylan has responded to the criticism by offering discounts more widely to families, and said it plans to launch a halfprice version of EpiPen soon, a move Bresch said on Wednesday would cannibalize its brand-name product. “Our concern was absolutely that anyone who needs an EpiPen has one,” she said. EpiPen has more than a 90 percent market share for emergency epinephrine auto-injectors. In 2015 it accounted for $1 billion of Mylan’s overall sales of $9.45 billion. The device accounts for about 20 percent of company profits. Critics say EpiPen would remain profitable at a lower price. REUTERS

Brangelina breakup breakdown, Day 2 — Kimye and Beyonce and Jay-Z — to so-so couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes to rando oldie romancers Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Our favorite of the suggestions has to be Ben Affleck and Nicotine.
Yesterday, news of Jolie’s and Pitt’s pending divorce turned our (celeb-obsessed) world upside down. Today, folks in real life (and, of course, on the internet) are still reelin’ from the demise of one of the most beloved Hollywood couples. Here are five things to know about the breakup that has broken us all: 1. Adele basically dedicated her concert in NYC to the ex-couple, addressing the crowd: “Can we talk about the elephant in the room? That Brangelina broke up?” and referring to it as “the end of an era.” 2. Gossip outlets are trying to milk this for all it’s worth. An In-

stagram Selena Gomez posted in January of Pitt and herself at a Golden Globes party has resurfaced. Apparently at the time, Jolie “blew a gasket” over it. The National Enquirer wonders if Jolie’s jealousy of the babyfaced pop star may have played a part in the split? (Uhh, we doubt it.) 3. Relationships are never set in

stone, but if you’re famous enough, yours may be set in wax! At Madame Tussauds London, the figures of Brad and Angie have officially been separated. Wow, we were not ready for that. 4. Some people, who must have a lump of coal in place of a heart, have apparently moved on. Over at The Ringer, writers are already brainstorming who should replace Brangelina as the top pop-culture power couple. How dare they! Potential contenders range from the obvious
5. Wino site VinePair is all, “But who will get ownership of the Miraval Winery?!” It’s a relevant question for those who care about wine, considering one of the top sellers on the market, Chateau Miraval Rose, is produced at the couple’s French estate. VinePair thinks it could go to Jolie, because she has FrenchCanadian nationality. Then again, Pitt is big into working on the vineyard (and the internets are breathlessly reporting that his drinking habits played a role in the split, though neither camp has made any comment about that).
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling probably didn’t get married
Love is dead and everyone is apparently breaking up — except Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. In fact, the “Place Beyond the Pines” co-stars were rumored to have gotten hitched in secret a few months ago. US Weekly cites multiple anonymous sources who claimed the couple wed earlier this year with “a small group of family and friends.” According to these sources, Mendes and
Gosling who have two daughters (Esmeralda, 2, and Amada, 4 months) didn’t even need to make it official — even though, they claim, they totally did — because they “have always felt like a married couple.” However, an opposing anonymous source told TMZ it ain’t so. Despite multiple reports of the alleged “low-key wedding,” their “source close to the couple” says the couple remains unwed.

After leaving “Live” and co-host Kelly Ripa, Michael Strahan is finally ready to discuss the unintended drama that occurred during his last few weeks on the show. When Strahan, 44, left the show in May, Ripa claimed she had no idea about Strahan’s exit and famously skipped the show the day after the announcement. The following week, every awkward minute the pair was on air together was scrutinized — resulting in him signing off early so Ripa could look for his replacement. When asked about the situation by People, Strahan said: “The most disappointing thing to me was that I was painted as the bad guy, because I value the way I carry
myself.” He continued, “I wasn’t surprised by her reaction at all, but I can’t control somebody else’s actions. I was there four years, and it’s about more than just being in front of the camera.” Strahan doesn’t want people to see him as the guy who just left “Live” in the dust. “Toward the end of it all, we didn’t really communicate that much,” he said. “I kinda looked at it like, it was what it was. I come from a business where you have to collaborate. The show was going well? We’re all winning. That’s all that matters to me.” Strahan explained that because they were friends, he’s even more confused on what happened at the end. So are the rest of us.

Many of us grew up with Mark-Paul Gosselaar when he burst onto the scene in the ’90s as Zack Morris on “Saved by the Bell. While not all child stars enjoy the same level of success as adults, Gosselaar’s career continues to blossom. In his latest role, he steps up to the plate as Mike Lawson — the cocky yet lovable MLB catcher in Fox’s new show, “Pitch, which makes its debut tonight. We chat with Gosselaar about snagging the role, and why it’s so difficult to be a baseball fan in Los Angeles. What’s the story behind getting the role? I read the scripts. It was one of the couple I was reading for pilots and when I put it down, I knew there was something special there. I knew the showrunner,
Mark-Paul Gosselaar went through a physical transformation for his latest role. FOX
Kevin Falls, who was also the showrunner for “Franklin & Bash, and I said to him, “Hey, you gotta get me into this, and he said, “I think we already have you on the list to read. I went in there and had a really good session with Dan and all the other producers and Kevin as well. I kind of felt that I had a good chance with getting the role, and thank God that I did. Are you a baseball fan? I’m a casual baseball fan. I don’t really follow teams, mostly players.
Growing up in L.A., it was kind of always hard to pick a team to kind of root for. But players I like watching. “Pitch makes its debut Thursday, Sept. 22 at 9/8 on Fox.

As part of a cannabis comedy tour, Cummings is playing a free show Thursday at the Wilbur, sponsored by Leafly — an emerging company that is seeking to become the primary informa-
things to do WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY
tion resource on all things pot. We spoke with Cummings to pick her brain on weed matters. Joints, blunts, vapes, glass or hollowed-out pieces of fruit -- what’s your preferred smoking apparatus? You know what’s very weird is that I don’t smoke that much weed. I smoke weed out of a bowl. Like an adult. I’m not going to bring an innocent piece of fruit into it. A lot of the annoying people in my life thankfully smoke weed, and it makes them less annoying, so I’m very grateful for the effect weed has on all the people around me. A lot of your material comes out of the boudoir — do you have thoughts on weed, sex and the combination thereof? Yeah, weed and sex, to me, just equals, like … what’s it when you have sex with dead people? Not narcolepsy ...
Necrophilia. Yeah! If you have sex with me when [I’m smoking] you’re a necrophiliac, because I just pass out. Like, I’m not a fun, sexy weed smoker. I just stop yelling. I’m just even more useless in bed when I’m stoned. Any favorite stories from previous visits to Boston? I dated a guy from Boston for like four years, and I remember we would break up every time the Red Sox lost. So we were always breaking up. The first time I slept over his house, I cutely grabbed a T-shirt from his drawer. I was like “I’m going to wear one of his T-shirts to bed, it’ll be so sexy and cute.” And as soon as I put it on he started screaming at me [to take it off]. It was like an old tattered shirt that said “Nomar” on it. He could only wear it during games, and I just learned how superstitious lots of Boston fans are.

Boston crafting The Copenhagen Beer Celebration will suds up City Hall this weekend. BRENDAN MCGUIRK @BrendanMcGuirk letters@metro.us
This weekend, City Hall Plaza is likely to get a bit rowdy. After five years, the Copenhagen Beer Celebration is taking its first roadtrip and setting up shop in Boston on Sept. 23-24, bringing with it hundreds of craft beers from over 50 worldwide breweries. The beer fest is the brainchild of Mikkeller microbrewer Mikkel Borg Bjergso, who has teamed up with the folks responsible for organizing Boston Calling (Crash Line Proudctions) to blend their specialties and create an event that will not only have memorable, unique beers and eats but also features musical talent like Yo La
Tengo and Boston’s own Tigerman Woah! We spoke with Bjergso to get his thoughts on the event, craft beer culture and his hopes for the future of the festival. What do you think of Boston’s beer culture? Craft-beerwise, the biggest and one of the first and most influential craft breweries is Boston Beer Co., or Samuel Adams, which is from Boston, obviously. It’s still a craft brew, even though it’s so big. So Boston has a long history with craft beer, and it’s been a central beer in the movement. What should a budding beer aďŹ cionado look forward to most at the festival? One of the good things about this festival, and the ones we’ve had in Copenhagen -— it’s not just a festival where brewers bring their normal beers, even though

It’s pretty much like if you go into McDonald’s to have a burger and then the next day you go to a great artisanal burger place where they spend a lot of energy on it. Do you
go back to McDonald’s? I don’t think so. Do you see this as a limited, one-o festival, or are you looking to make a home for the festival in Boston? We see it as something we would love to develop. Hopefully we can do this in Boston every year from now on.

Boston’s no Nashville, but you wouldn’t know it Thursday nights at Loretta’s Last Call, when local country act Southern City Band takes the stage. The group plays a muscular countryrock style with song titles like “Mayday,” “Jack Daniels Man” and “Bonfire,” suggesting wild nights in forgotten roadhouses. They also do Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” because why not? September 22, 8:30 p.m. Loretta’s Las Call, 1 Lansdowne St. Free, 21+, lorettaslastcall.com
What is it about French-Canadians being such innovators in the circus arts? Who knows? But here’s another group from Quebec City that seems a lot more comical and down to earth—but no less gravity-defying — than their bizarrely-costumed, impossiblycontorted countrymen in Cirque de Soleil. Their props, we’re told, include “teeterboard, juggling clubs, drum kits and even bath towels.” Through Oct. 2 Paramount Center, 559 Washington St. $10-$80, artsemerson.org

“Shakes the Clown” Bobcat Goldthwait will appear in person at this 25th anniversary screening of his 1991 dark comedy, which he wrote, directed and starred in, as a depressed birthday clown who finds himself framed for murder. The Globe’s Betsy Sherman notably declared it to be “The ‘Citizen Kane’ of alcoholic-clown movies.” We’re pretty sure the film has no rivals to this title.

By now you’ve probably heard about how fat and cholesterol aren’t quite as unhealthful as they’ve been made out to be for most of the past half-century. This should allow you to enjoy the Massachusetts Cheese Festival with somewhat less guilt. But you may still get weird dreams from all that cheese. Then again, it’ll give you something to blog about. For Meehan, this is no shock, because our heroines subscribe to an ideology that’s actually impossible to uphold, inevitably resulting in a tragi-comic hot mess of hypocrisy. The North American country has centuries of ruins to explore.
Hilltop fortresses, riverfront temples and pyramids that peek out of steamy jungles dot Mexico’s landscape, with historical sites that span many centuries. Though many were built by the Mayans and the Aztecs, some were the work of ancient peoples whose secrets have yet to be unlocked. Dive into Mexico’s unique history by checking out our picks for the country’s six best archaeological treasures. MARK SULLIVAN

One of the main temples in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, it was where captives from rival peoples — as many as 10,000 at a time — were sacrificed to the god of war. Seven rows of stone skulls greeted them as they met their fate. One of Mexico’s crown jewels, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Monte Alban Once home to the “Cloud People,” the mountaintop temple complex of Monte Alban does seem close to the sky. At this spectacular archaeological site, occupied a millennium ago by the Zapotec people, you’ll find dozens of intriguing carvings of “Danzantes,” or “Dancers.” Home to hundreds of tombs that have yielded igold and jade, Monte Alban is a nine-mile drive from Oaxaca.
Bonampak Although most Mayan ruins are now unadorned stone, the ancient city of Bonampak in modern-day Chiapas is a peek at a world in Technicolor. Atop a small pyramid you’ll find one of the most eye-popping examples of Mayan painting: the Tesmple of the Murals, where three rooms depict a glorious battle scene. The frescoes are still-vivid shades of red, gold and a luminous blue-green.

We’re just two games into the Patriots’ season and already there’s been enough action, surprise, happiness, and sadness to fill an entire 16-game schedule. Jimmy Garoppolo followed up his impressive debut against the Cardinals by picking apart the Dolphins through the first two quarters. According to most Patriots fans midway through the second quarter, he was already either the franchise quarterback or worth a first- and third-round pick in next year’s draft ‌ but disaster struck as Garoppolo hit the ground hard, shoulder-first. He left the game and wouldn’t return — and it sounds like his status is going to be anybody’s guess right up until game time. man up for the Patriots? Rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett took over for Garoppolo in the second half last week and managed the team to a win against the Dolphins, going 6-for-9 for 92 yards as the Pats turned to LeGarrette Blount and the run game. Brissett will have to do the same in Week 3 against the Texans if called upon. But just as Garoppolo had to make his first NFL start under the bright lights on national TV, so will Brissett — except he’s doing it a) as a rookie, and b) on short rest, as the Patriots host the Texans on Thursday night (8:25 p.m., CBS). It makes sense to not have much faith in Brissett being able to get the job done. The Patriots are actually 2.5-point underdogs at home — virtually
unheard of around here.
threat 1Dual in Texas
The Patriots shut down the Texans’ offense last season, but that was with Brian Hoyer at quarterback. This season it’s former Denver Bronco Brock Osweiler. And he has a fun rookie weapon in Will Fuller, who last week became the third wide receiver to start his NFL career with two straight 100-yard receiving games, according to ESPN. The 6-foot Fuller and 6-foot-1 DeAndre Hopkins make for a nice duo, but don’t forget that Logan Ryan shut down Hopkins last year to the tune of three catches for 52 yards, with one 40-yard catch coming in the fourth quarter of a game already out of reach. Expect another
Whoever ends up being the quarterback Thursday night better have his head on a swivel. Reigning sack leader J.J. Watt is arguably the most dangerous defensive lineman in the game. And if he isn’t enough to worry about, athletic freak Jadeveon Clowney and ESPN The Body Issue’s Vince Wilfork will also be hovering around at all times. It will be very interesting to see how Brissett handles himself without a 20-plus point lead and with Watt coming around the edge, if he is in fact the QB. Ditto for Garoppolo, who with a bum shoulder needs to avoid Watt like the plague.Â
3Plan B-ennett
That the Patriots are 2-0 without Tom Brady is pretty impressive. But they’ve also been without their top receiving weapon in Rob Gronkowski, who’s been dealing with a hamstring injury. His status for Thursday is also up in the air, but the Patriots have proven that they can win without him. A big reason for that is fellow tight end Martellus Bennett, who racked up 114 yards and a touchdown on five catches against the Dolphins. Good on Bill Belichick for realizing how important another skilled tight end is in this offense in case Gronkowski went down.

STOP OVERREACTING TO THE PATS’ QB SITUATION DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard
Sometimes I just can’t handle it. The overreactions. The pure stupidity. The insanity that comes with being a New England Patriots fan. In 2016, with a team that has been in the AFC Championship five straight years, at some point, you have to just believe in the system. If you don’t believe in the Patriots’ system by now, then I’m not sure there’s anything else they could do to get you to buy in. Like it or not, “next man up” is a real thing. It works. As we’re seeing, even at the quarterback position. I’m not here to tell you that Jacoby Brissett is the next Tom Brady. I’m not even here to tell you that he’ll have as much success as Jimmy Garoppolo did in the first six quarters of this season before going down with a shoulder injury in Week 2. But instead of throwing out all of these outrageous ideas for the Patriots to acquire another QB, I think it’s best that everyone puts the mobile devices in a drawer and goes out for a nice long walk. Take a few deep breaths. Then come back and talk to me about what the Pats should do in the next two weeks. As I write this, Garoppolo’s status is up in the air. That leaves Brissett as the starting QB. Brissett entered Sunday’s win over Miami late in the first half, and finished the game 6-of-9 for 92 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdown passes, but he did help lead the Patriots down the field in their first possession of the second half,. With the Texans and Bills on
the schedule the next two weeks — both games at Gillette — it’s not really the nightmarish situation that some people have drawn up in their heads. For starters — Brady will be back in Week 5. And he’ll be reclaiming his role of starting quarterback. To think, as Garoppolo lit up the Dolphins before he got hurt on Sunday, there were people — actual humans with brains — who wanted to discuss the possibility of the Patriots trading Brady before he returned from his four-game Deflategate suspension. Not to root for or applaud an injury, but with Garoppolo going down, at least we don’t have listen to the “trade Brady” crowd the next few weeks. And just when you thought you didn’t have the energy to deal with that type of ridiculous conversation, Garoppolo’s injury actually led to NFL analysts — people with full-time jobs who have only one job: to analyze football — calling for the Patriots to bring in Peyton Manning until Brady returned in Week 5. What planet am I on? Back here on Earth, the next two weeks should be simple. If Garoppolo isn’t able to play, you start Brissett. The rookie is clearly talented, intelligent and composed enough to not make the big mistakes and allow his defense and special teams to keep them in the game. The Pats should also sign a veteran QB to back him up. But if a name like “Manning” pops into your head, you should just stop reading this. Because we’ll never be on the same page. I’m talking about a veteran QB who has made a living being a veteran backup. Nobody that will shock you. Just someone to step in, toss on the shoulder pads, and be ready. Worst-case scenario is the Patriots lose the next two games and are 2-2 by the time they give the ball back to Brady. Considering nobody else in the AFC East is going to run away with the division, that’s not the end of the world. In fact, if you had told me before the season that the Pats — even with a healthy Garoppolo — would be 2-2 entering Week 5 as Brady returns, I’d be just fine with that. And if that’s how it actually ends up, so be it. Take the overreactions and the stupidity somewhere else. Because the Patriots are going to be just fine.

metro.us/horoscopes Aries You should make special plans that will bring you closer to someone who intrigues you. Share your vision and your ambitions.
Libra Learn as you go. Let your instincts and intuition help you find your strengths. Courage comes from doing what you believe is right.
Taurus An emotionally fraught matter will get blown out of proportion if you or a colleague becomes aggressive. Refuse to get drawn into a vulnerable position.
Scorpio Don’t spend money foolishly. If you want to help a cause, put your time and expertise to work, not your cash. Your ideas will be a far better contribution.
Gemini You need to show greater creativity when you are dealing with peers or presenting your work. Someone will offer you an opportunity based on your actions.
Sagittarius If you put more time and effort into personal relationships, you will find common ground that will help you bring about positive changes.
Cancer Don’t take part in gossip or share personal information. Work on a project that will require your undivided attention and unique and creative skills.
Capricorn Stick close to home and take measures to prevent interference from someone who is trying to make you look bad. Do what works for you.
Leo Keep your emotions out of any situation that involves money. Joint ventures will not pan out as hoped, leaving you in an awkward position.
Aquarius An experiment will turn out better than anticipated. Network with others and share your success with people who could have something to contribute to your plans.
Virgo Try not to complain or question what others do. Focus inward and aim to do things that will make you feel good about yourself and your contributions.
Pisces Problems at home will escalate. Stay focused on fulfilling your duties. Letting your emotions affect your job performance will lead to more stress at home. EUGENIA LAST
