3 things you need to know SENATORS ACCUSE YAHOO OF ‘UNACCEPTABLE’ DELAY IN HACK DISCOVERY

1

Six Democratic U.S. senators Tuesday said it was “unacceptable” that Yahoo only last week announced a 2014 hack into 500 million user accounts and asked embattled CEO Marissa Mayer for more information about the company’s investigation into the data breach. The lawmakers said they were “disturbed” the two-yearold intrusion was detected so long after the hack occurred. “That means millions of Americans’ data may have been compromised for two years,” the senators wrote in a joint letter addressed to Mayer. “This is unacceptable.” Yahoo did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the letter. Yahoo has faced mounting questions about exactly when it knew about the 2014 cyber attack that exposed the email credentials of users, a critical issue for the company as it seeks to prevent the breach from affecting a pending takeover of its core business by Verizon Inc. CALIF. CHANGES LAWS SO KIDS CAN NO LONGER BE CALLED PROSTITUTES

2

Children will no longer be classified as prostitutes in the U.S. state of California after a new law decriminalized prostitution for minors in a move praised by children’s rights campaigners. Coming on the back of a public campaign coined “There is No Such Thing” as a child prostitute, crimes of solicitation and prostitution will no longer apply to anyone aged under 18. Underage victims of sex trafficking are to be referred to child welfare agencies. The law was among several signed by Gov. Jerry Brown this week to boost protections for children forced into sex trafficking. “The passage of these critical laws marks a clear shift in the public perception of sexually exploited children as victims rather than criminals,” said Yasmin Vafa, executive director of Rights4Girls that launched the “No Such Thing” campaign. TV AUDIENCE FOR DEBATE LIKELY TO APPROACH 80M RECORD

3

The television audience for the first U.S. presidential debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump looks set to approach 80-million viewer record for such events set in 1980, early Nielsen data cited by U.S. media suggested Tuesday. But the initial data from the four main broadcast networks suggest Monday evening’s 90-minute debate, which was carried on multiple U.S. broadcast and cable networks, would not surpass 100 million viewers, as some analysts had predicted ahead of the face-off. Would you like to help shape what Boston looks like in the future? You can, thanks to Mayor Marty Walsh’s Imagine Boston 2030, a two-year public-engagement effort and full schedule of events. Earlier this month, Walsh put out a call to action asking community organizations and neighborhood groups to step up and host an event to foster more discussion about the city’s future. More than 35 sessions are planned through October. Walsh also announced Tuesday the creation of Imagine Boston 2030’s engagement team, which will visit these events in various Boston neighborhoods to hear feedback from those residents. “I am excited to launch the next itera-

The engagement team wants to hear resident input on areas in which Boston can grow as well as presentations on ways the city can protect its waterfront from the effects of climate change. The Donald won, say Metro readers in online poll Donald Trump crushed Hillary Clinton in their first presidential debate, say readers who responded to Metro’s “debating the debate” unscientific poll. Out of the 2,128 who took Metro’s online poll Monday night after the debate into Tuesday evening, the flamboyant Republican candidate was declared the winner by 63.4 percent of Metro’s readers. The former secretary of state was deemed the victor by nearly 34 percent of the poll participants. Another 2.6 percent of the readers said the debate ended in a tie. Other national polls have given the victory to Clinton; CNN, for example, polled 521 registered

voters who watched the debate and found 62 percent thought Clinton had won, while only 27 percent thought Trump had prevailed. Only a few of the readers who participated in the poll added a comment. Most of the comments were left by readers who said Clinton won the debate. “I’m not a big fan of

Clinton, honestly, but in this case, I’ll choose ... the lesser of two evils,” wrote a reader who identified himself as Jay Haney. Because the Metro poll could be accessed via a Google search and social media, 21 percent of those who participated in the poll did so from outside the U.S. Votes were recorded from 54 other countries, including Russia, Malaysia and South Africa. Most votes originating outside the U.S. came from Canada and the United Kingdom. While the poll was unscientific, participants were restricted to one vote per computer to help stem ballot-stuffing. A Boston-based startup wants to help get people to their doctor appointments through a partnership with Uber. An estimated 3.6 million Americans, including almost 1 million children, miss medical appointments every year because of transportation issues, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. These aren’t emergency visits, but this pattern can have damaging repercussions for patients, such as a greater risk of complications and a possible future hospital admission, said Dr. John Brownstein, a researcher at Boston

Circulation has teamed up with Uber to help transport hospital patients. COURTESY OF CIRCULATION

Children’s Hospital. Brownstein, who also serves as a healthcare adviser to Uber, cofounded Circulation to help solve this problem while providing hospitals with more effective transportation options at a lower cost. “Circulation is essentially a very novel platform that connects hospital information systems with Uber,” he said. “We’re trying to bring a new gear into the system—modern, on-demand, lower-cost transportation options to

move patients around.” Brownstein said that hospitals spend billions of dollars transporting patients, whether through transportation brokers or taxi vouchers, yet so many still miss their appointments. It’s important to offer some sort of transportation because not all patients are able to own a car or secure their own rides. “The way consumers have experienced the luxury of on-demand rides is what we’re trying to bring to patients,” Brownstein said. To patients who may seem unsure about getting in an Uber, Brownstein said this partnership ensures more accountability and tracking than usual hospitalmade arrangements. Taxi vouchers are more expensive, filled out manually and have less tracking or accountability options. Expanded version of this story can be seen at metro.us

T leadership eyes collaboration with Boston on overnight bus schedule With a board member frustrated about the lack of significant progress examining the potential for overnight bus service from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. in Metro Boston, MBTA leadership suggested a possible collaboration with City Hall on the proposal. “Until we have a schedule and routes and stops, we can’t understand what we think the ridership and the cost would be, Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack told reporters Monday after a meeting of the T’s Fiscal and Management Control Board. Pollack, who suggested a working group with Boston, said there is always an extensive process before moving bus routes and some communities might object to adding buses that would run well after midnight. The board in early May first tasked the T

administration with investigating the idea for night-long bus service centered in Boston’s Copley Square, which was proposed by transit advocates. “I think I’m just troubled by the fact that there doesn’t seem to have been any movement since the last time we heard this presentation, said board member Monica Tibbits-Nutt. The T estimates that with buses running every hour and 15 minutes along eight routes

roughly following existing transit corridors, the service would cost $3.5 million per year, a subsidy of $17.48 per trip. The “late-night weekend service, which was eliminated earlier this year because of cost concerns and restricted ability to conduct repairs on subway tracks, had a per-ride subsidy of about $14. Marc Ebuna, the co-founder of Transit Matters, which is pushing the proposal, said he hoped efforts to collect data would not slow down the proposal and said the best way to obtain accurate ridership data would be to launch a pilot. Others at Monday’s meeting, including Andrew Bagley from the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, noted the T’s far-fromfinished efforts to close a multimillion-dollar structural deficit.

BRIEF Stop-gap bill to avoid government shutdown fails Senate procedural vote A stop-gap funding bill to avoid a federal government shutdown later this week failed to garner enough votes to move forward in the Senate on Tuesday, with Democrats and Republicans both opposing the measure. The must-pass continuing resolution, or CR, which would keep federal agencies operating from Saturday through Dec. 9,

received only 45 of the 60 votes needed to limit debate and be considered for passage by the 100seat Republican-controlled Senate. Forty Democrats and two independents opposed the CR because it lacked a $220 million aid package to address the drinkingwater crisis in Flint, Michigan. It also drew opposition from 13 Republicans, including Sen. Ted Cruz, the former presidential candidate. Senate leaders said they

would explore alternatives to avoid a shutdown. Without an extension, many federal agencies will run out of operating funds when the government ďŹ scal year expires at midnight on Friday. The bill includes $1.1 billion to combat the Zika virus and $500 million for ood relief in Louisiana and other states. “This is a 10-week funding bill. Its contents command broad support. It contains zero controver-

sial riders, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said before the vote. Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives vowed to oppose the resolution until Republicans agree to a Flint aid package that the Senate passed by a 95-3 margin this month as part of a separate water resources bill. Flint, a city with over 100,000 people, has had lead-tainted drinking water for more than two years. REUTERS

Clinton, speaking to reporters on her campaign plane, said, “Anyone who complains about the microphone is not having a good night.â€? Republican Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday he would hit rival Hillary Clinton harder in the next presidential debate while the Democratic nominee sought to keep him on the defensive with accusations that he is a sexist, racist and tax dodger. As had been expected, Monday night’s first faceoff between Clinton, who has decades of experience in public life, and Trump, famous as a television personality but running for office for the first time, attracted a huge audience. Some 80.9 million Americans watched the debate on television, setting a new viewership record for such events, CNN said. Clinton tried to keep up momentum from a forceful performance, saying on Tuesday that the New York real estate mogul “was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue, offering opinions that I think a lot of people would find offensive and off-putting.â€? Trump praised himself for not attacking Clinton during the debate about the marital infidelity of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, but said that he may take up the attack line going forward. There are two more debates

scheduled, on Oct. 9 in St. Louis and Oct. 19 in Las Vegas, ahead of the Nov. 8 election. “I may hit her harder in certain ways. I really eased up because I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings, Trump said in an interview on the Fox News program “Fox & Friends. He added that when Clinton criticized him for his treatment of women, he held back, saying, “I was going to hit her with her husband’s women. And I decided I shouldn’t do it because her daughter was in the room. Clinton brushed off Trump’s vow, saying, “He can run his campaign however he chooses. Trump himself was still married to his first wife, Ivana Trump, when he had a high-profile affair with Marla Maples, who became his second wife. He eventually divorced Maples and married his third and current wife, Melania Trump. Clinton, a former senator and secretary of state, stepped up her criticism of Trump for refusing to release his tax returns, as presidential candidates have done for decades, and for saying during the debate that not paying federal income tax “makes me smart. “He actually bragged about gaming the system to get out of paying his fair share of taxes. In fact, I think there’s a strong probability he hasn’t paid federal taxes a lot of years, she said at a campaign rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, a pivotal state in the election. REUTERS

Well, this is no fun: Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber split There are celebrity couples whose names you turn into fun portmanteaux, like “Brangelina” or (digging up an old Colbertism) “Filliam H. Muffman.” Then there are celebrity couples you take for granted, assuming they’d always be a power pair even if paparazzi didn’t spy on their every trip to buy toothpaste and crunchy peanut butter. Naomi

Watts and Liev Schreiber (Schratts? Lioami? We got nothin’) were one of those couples. Note the past tense, because, sadly, they are now no longer one of those couples. The acclaimed actors, who’ve been together for 11 years and had two children — and who we sometimes forgot were a couple, because we didn’t think to always invade their privacy — publicly announced their split, after noting

they sort of kind of split up about a year ago: moving into separate NYC apartments, juggling parental hand-offs, all while putting in the occasional public appearance, as they did at last year’s Oscars. There’s no tabloid-y joy to be had here: Both are fine actors we probably take for granted, as we did their coupledom, and both seem like very nice people who deserve happiness. Sad face.

Katy Perry strips down in the name of democracy After telling her Twitter followers Monday that she would be “using [her] body as clickbait to help change the world,” Katy Perry proved that she’s serious about her promises. After all, the star was eager to share her good news: “This year, you can look like s—t when you vote.” “In the name of democracy, any just out-of-bed look is A-OK,” she says in the video. “A child’s onesie, hunk in kids’ briefs, that free XL T-shirt you got from your bank—or, if you’re like me—I sleep naked.”

Unfortunately for Perry, arriving at the polls in the nude isn’t so legal, even in the world of comedic simulation, and the star is immediately put in cuffs. It appears she might have only “briefly scanned” her constitutional rights. Speeding off in the back of the cop car, Perry ends the clip with a brief recantation: “My bad, you have to wear clothes. See you at the polls Nov. 8th.”

They follow the scent of soon-to-be-built Trader Joe’s like catnip. Working professionals who used to view Allston and Brighton as messy neighborhoods for college kids looking to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon and smoke Parliament Lights are now flocking to the area. “I have been seeing more people in their late 20s to 30s, and I wonder if Allston’s demographic is starting to trend a bit older, more professional than it’s known for,” says Brynna Epperly, 29, a financial associate who lives off Commonwealth Avenue in Allston. She rents a three-bed, one-

bath unit with two friends, for which they pay $2,325 per month, including heat and hot water. Real estate professionals echo Epperly’s sentiments. “I think more people are seeing Allston and Brighton as a cost effective alternative to Cambridge, especially with Harvard relocating its Science and Engineering Complex in Lower Allston,” says Kevin Cleary, broker and owner of Re/Max Select Reality based in Brighton. “I’m also seeing more people who have started their search in Cambridge and come over to this side of the river because of how much more house they can get for the money.” Cleary cites the recent addition of the Boston Landing Commuter Rail Station and the announcement that Trader Joe’s will move into the Continuum Building in Lower Allston as attractive draws for professionals. But ultimately, it’s price that’s

Downtown Allston offers plentiful health-conscious, vegan and ethnic dining options.

the biggest draw: Rents in Allston/Brighton are priced between $800 and $1000 per bedroom, with prices for units closer to the Green Line going for $1000 to $1200 per bedroom. And if you’re looking to buy, you better act fast. Property is scare, and the median price for

a condo is $415,000. “Allston and Brighton definitely need more two- and three-bedroom condos priced in the $400 to $600,000 range to stay competitive with other neighborhoods in Boston, as well as the surrounding communities where the housing

stock is more abundant,” says Cleary. But in the eyes of current residents, the best way to maintain and continue attracting the professional crowd to the neighborhood is by improving what’s already there. “Speed limit enforce-

ment on Commonwealth Avenue, improvement of parks and green spaces, better access to the Charles River,” Epperly lists as examples. “I like to think more residents would be invested in the neighborhood if the city started leading the charge.”

Red Sox can beat anyone in the AL How do the Sox match up against potential opponents? MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

It’s becoming increasingly likely that the American League playoffs will feature three AL East teams, led by the Red Sox as the division champs. If the season ended today, the Sox would host the winner of an Orioles-Blue Jays Wild Card showdown. Here’s a glance at how the Sox match up against both of those squads as well as the Rangers and Indians — who are also headed to the postseason.

Baltimore The Red Sox finished the season 11-8 against the O’s. They padded that record just last week when they ripped off four

in a row in Baltimore. It’s highly unlikely though that the Red Sox can stay THIS hot when the reach October. Keep in mind that the back end of this much-acclaimed win streak featured victories over Tampa Bay — a team that checked out just after the Fourth of July. The best series to look at between the Sox and O’s might be the one that took place at Fenway in early September. The Sox pounded the O’s, 12-2, in the opener but lost 6-3 and 1-0 in the final two games. David Price (who would start Game 2 of an ALDS against the O’s) has been solid against Baltimore recently, as he has given up an average of just two runs in three starts since the beginning of August.

Toronto The Sox are 6-7 against the Jays this season and still have three games

against them this weekend — albeit those games might not mean all that much. Price has been extremely effective against

this old club this season, giving up an average of just two earned runs in three starts, but he hasn’t pitched against them since June.

Texas The Sox are 3-3 against the Rangers this season, but haven’t played them since July 6. They’re obviously a much different team than they were at that point in the season, as are the Rangers, but

expect a slugfest if these two meet in the playoffs. The two squads put up final scores of 12-5, 7-2 and 11-6 in their last series.

Cleveland The Red Sox are 4-2 against Terry Francona and friends this year. The Sox’ 2016 season started in Cleveland many moons ago as they were rained out on opening day, but got things underway on April 5 — a

6-2 Red Sox win. The Sox last played at the House Formerly Known as Jacobs Field on Aug. 15 and won 3-2 thanks in large part to a two-run David Ortiz blast. Ortiz, who will no doubt be looking to go out with a bang this postseason, loves playing in “The Land.” “I always love hitting in this park,” Ortiz said at the time. “Who doesn’t? It’s a really good hitting ballpark.” To advertise call Gregory Manning at 617-532-0121 or email gregory.manning@metro.us
