3 things you need to know SENATORS ACCUSE YAHOO OF ‘UNACCEPTABLE’ DELAY IN HACK DISCOVERY
1
Six Democratic U.S. senators Tuesday said it was “unacceptable” that Yahoo only last week announced a 2014 hack into 500 million user accounts and asked embattled CEO Marissa Mayer for more information about the company’s investigation into the data breach. The lawmakers said they were “disturbed” the two-yearold intrusion was detected so long after the hack occurred. “That means millions of Americans’ data may have been compromised for two years,” the senators wrote in a joint letter addressed to Mayer. “This is unacceptable.” Yahoo did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the letter. Yahoo has faced mounting questions about exactly when it knew about the 2014 cyber attack that exposed the email credentials of users, a critical issue for the company as it seeks to prevent the breach from affecting a pending takeover of its core business by Verizon Inc. CALIF. CHANGES LAWS SO KIDS CAN NO LONGER BE CALLED PROSTITUTES
2
Children will no longer be classified as prostitutes in the U.S. state of California after a new law decriminalized prostitution for minors in a move praised by children’s rights campaigners. Coming on the back of a public campaign coined “There is No Such Thing” as a child prostitute, crimes of solicitation and prostitution will no longer apply to anyone aged under 18. Underage victims of sex trafficking are to be referred to child welfare agencies. The law was among several signed by Gov. Jerry Brown this week to boost protections for children forced into sex trafficking. “The passage of these critical laws marks a clear shift in the public perception of sexually exploited children as victims rather than criminals,” said Yasmin Vafa, executive director of Rights4Girls that launched the “No Such Thing” campaign. TV AUDIENCE FOR DEBATE LIKELY TO APPROACH 80M RECORD
3
The television audience for the first U.S. presidential debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump looks set to approach 80-million viewer record for such events set in 1980, early Nielsen data cited by U.S. media suggested Tuesday. But the initial data from the four main broadcast networks suggest Monday evening’s 90-minute debate, which was carried on multiple U.S. broadcast and cable networks, would not surpass 100 million viewers, as some analysts had predicted ahead of the face-off. Vince Fenerty will leave his role as the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s executive director days after it was revealed he was previously disciplined for the sexual harassment of a female underling, reports said Tuesday. Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) chairman Joe Ashdale ordered Fenerty suspended and said it will recommend his termination Thursday, the Inquirer reported. The about-face came just after the newspaper reported that a second woman sued Fenerty over sexual-harassment allegations. Inquirer columnist Mike Newall, who broke the story that Fenerty was internally disci-
“His continued employment sends the message that sexual harassment is OK, and that the harm caused can be erased by monetary payment. Sexual harassment can’t be written off like a parking fine.” Felicia Harris
plined by the PPA over sexual harassment allegations by a female employee, reported Tuesday that a second woman said Fenerty sexually harassed her for about three years. That woman was offered a $150,000 settlement in 2007 but turned it down, and kept her job. After investing $30,000 into an independent investigation over the other woman, the PPA concluded Fenerty could remain on the job with severely
limited powers, including losing his ability to hire, fire or promote. Fenerty led the PPA in 2014 as it was locked in a war of sorts with scofflaw cab apps Uber and Lyft, including the “sting” operation that greeted UberX’s first weekend in Philadelphia. A truce was reached between the PPA and UberX this past summer, partly in recognition of legislation expected to become law in Harrisburg
this week. It remains to be seen if Fenerty’s ouster will affect that legislation. Despite defense from City Councilman Al Taubenberger, a board member, that the harassment just constituted a case of “puppy love” (Taubenberger later retracted that wording) the drumbeat of calls for Fenerty to resign just intensified after the story broke. “Since Fenerty’s behavior disqualifies him from leading a major state agency, a fact all but acknowledged by the board when they stripped him of most of his professional responsibilities last year,” said Philadelphia Commission for Women chairwoman Felicia Harris last week, “his continued employment sends the message that sexual harassment is OK, and that the harm caused can be erased by monetary payment. Sexual harassment can’t be written off like a parking fine.”

BRIEFS Biden at Drexel: Trump ‘painfully uninformed’ Vice President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail for fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton on Tuesday and slammed Donald Trump’s debate performance, saying the Republican nominee is “painfully uniformed.” Biden, who was at Drexel University, criticized Trump for calling it “good business” to see the housing market fail. “What in the hell is he talking about,”

the vice president said, according to NBC News. Trump vowed on Tuesday
to hit Clinton harder in the next presidential debate after she put him on the defensive by accusing him of being racist, sexist and a tax dodger during their first matchup. Clinton blasted Trump again the day after a forceful performance in the first of three scheduled debates ahead of the Nov. 8 election. The New York real estate mogul, she said, “was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue, offering opinions that I think a lot of
people would find offensive and off-putting.” Biden added a jab at Trump on his tax-returns issue before the young crowd at Drexel. “He acknowledged that he didn’t pay taxes because he said… because he’s smart; makes him smart,” Biden said, referring to an interjection Trump made when Clinton suggested he possibly did not pay federal taxes. “Tell that to the janitor in here who’s paying taxes!”GARY KANE

The Donald won, say Metro readers in online poll The unscientific poll attracted participants from 55 countries. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @MetroNewYork
kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
Donald Trump crushed Hillary Clinton in their first presidential debate, say readers who responded to Metro’s “debating the debate” unscientific poll. Out of the 2,128 who took Metro’s online poll Monday night after the debate into Tuesday evening, the flamboyant Republican candidate was declared the winner by 63.4 percent of Metro’s readers. The former secretary of state was deemed the victor by nearly 34 percent of the poll participants. Another 2.6 percent of the readers said the debate ended in a tie. Other national polls had given the victory to Clinton; CNN, for example, polled 521 registered voters who watched the debate and found 62 percent thought Clinton had won, while only 27 percent thought Trump had prevailed. Only a few of the readers who participated in the poll added
a comment. Most of the comments were left by readers who said Clinton won the debate. “I’m not a big fan of Clinton, honestly, but in this case, I’ll choose … the lesser of two evils,” wrote a reader who identified himself as Jay Haney. Because the Metro poll could be accessed via a Google search and social media, 21 percent of those who participated in the poll did so from outside the U.S. Votes were recorded from 54 other countries, including Russia, Malaysia and South Africa. Most votes originating outside the U.S. came from Canada and the United Kingdom. While the poll was unscientific, participants were restricted to one vote per computer to help stem ballot-stuffing. The debate attracted about 80 million viewers, according to early figures released by Nielsen. The TV audience was the largest since televised debates began in 1960 with the John F. KennedyRichard Nixon face-off. The total, however, falls far short of the 105 million who watched the final episode of “M*A*S*H” in 1983. The second debate is scheduled for Oct. 9.

End draws near for SEPTA tokens DNC host committee
reports raising $85M for Philly convention
The authority has launched the “Quick Trips magnetic card. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroPhilly

SEPTA is again expanding its Key program, a payment card alternative to the city’s archaic subway and transit tokens. The authority on Tuesday launched “Quick Trips,â€? a disposable, magnetic card that can be purchased for $2.25 for single trips on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines. Buyers can use debit and credit cards or cash. Also gone are the days of carrying exact change: Riders paying in cash will receive change at kiosks when buying Quick Trips tickets. The single-ride tickets are available at 18 stations on the two subway lines: •

dale, Dilworth Park, 15th Street, 34th Street, 40th Street; Allegheny, Berks, Tioga and 63rd Street. On the BSLÂ AT&T Station, Walnut-Locust, Cecil B. Moore, Spring Garden, Tasker-Morris, EllsworthFederal, Erie, Girard and City Hall.
More stations will be added weekly. All stations will be equipped to offer Quick Trips by Oct. 17, SEPTA said. And unlike the early rollout of Key cards,
which were limited to monthly and weekly passes, Quick Trips are available for purchase now. By late November, SEPTA also plans to roll out the Key’s “Travel Wallet feature, which will allow riders to fill their cards with cash for $1.80 fares, instead of carrying tokens, a spokesman for the agency told PlanPhilly. The Key program still doesn’t extend to Regional Rail lines, though SEPTA has said that a Key

card loaded with a TransPass will be accepted on weekends and holidays only. Full rollout of the new payment technology (NPT) system was expected in December 2013, per PlanPhilly, and again was anticipated this past spring. By November — already nearly three years behind schedule — the Key still isn’t expected to extend to Regional Rail and CCT Paratransit riders.
The host committee for the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday released its list of donors who helped pay for the gathering — two months after the the party anointed its presidential contender. The committee reported that it received $85 million for the event. It revealed in a 1,100page document filed with the Federal Elections Commission that more than $1 million was
donated by Facebook and $500,000 by Comcast, as well as $5 million in inkind services, CBS Philly reported. Several large banks and labor unions also made large contributions. Host committee chairman Ed Rendell told the CBS affiliate that the city of Philadelphia made no cash contributions. Rendell said he expects the committee to carry a surplus after all expenses are paid. GARY KANE

Republican Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday he would hit rival Hillary Clinton harder in the next presidential debate while the Democratic nominee sought to keep him on the defensive with accusations that he is a sexist, racist and tax dodger. As had been expected, Monday night’s first faceoff between Clinton, who has decades of experience in public life, and Trump, famous as a television personality but running for office for the first time, attracted a huge audience. Some 80.9 million Americans watched the debate on television, setting a new viewership record for such events, CNN said. Clinton tried to keep up momentum from a forceful performance, saying on Tuesday that the New York real estate mogul “was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue, offering opinions that I think a lot of people would find offensive and off-putting.” Trump praised himself for not attacking Clinton

during the debate about the marital infidelity of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, but said that he may take up the attack line going forward. There are two more debates scheduled, on Oct. 9 in St. Louis and Oct. 19 in Las Vegas, ahead of the Nov. 8 election. “I may hit her harder in certain ways. I really eased up because I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings,” Trump said in an interview on the Fox News program “Fox & Friends.” He added that when Clinton criticized him for his treatment of women, he held back, saying, “I was going to hit her with her husband’s women. And I decided I shouldn’t do it because her daughter was in the room.” Clinton brushed off Trump’s vow, saying, “He can run his campaign however he chooses.” Trump himself was still
married to his first wife, Ivana Trump, when he had a high-profile affair with Marla Maples, who became his second wife. He eventually divorced Maples and married his third and current wife, Melania Trump. Clinton, a former senator and secretary of state, stepped up her criticism of Trump for refusing to release his tax returns, as presidential candidates have done for decades, and for saying during the debate that not paying federal income tax “makes me smart.” “He actually bragged about gaming the system to get out of paying his fair share of taxes. In fact, I think there’s a strong probability he hasn’t paid federal taxes a lot of years,” she said at a campaign rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, a pivotal state in the election. REUTERS

named those celebrities as among the victims, as well as U.S. soccer player Hope Solo. The Tribune reported that Majerczyk told U.S. District Judge Charles Kocoras on Tuesday that he targeted celebrities, going through personal information and downloading “sensitive images.” His lawyer, Thomas Needham, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The newspaper quoted Needham as telling the judge there was no evidence “of any effort
by my client to sell or disseminate” any images. “So essentially it was for his own personal satisfaction and enjoyment?” Kocoras said, according to the newspaper. “Yes, your honor,” Needham was quoted as saying. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Fitzpatrick for the Northern District of Illinois said by email that his office agreed to seek a nine-month prison sentence for Majerczyk, who lives near Chicago. He declined to comment further. Prosecutors said Majerczyk used a phishing scheme to illegally access more than 300 Apple iCloud and Alphabet Inc.’s Google Gmail accounts to obtain photographs from more than 300 victims. REUTERS

Sources: FBI believes cellphones of some Democrats targeted by hackers Democratic National Convention GETTY IMAGES
FBI investigators believe foreign hackers have targeted mobile phones used by a small number of Democratic Party figures, possibly including elected officials, four political and government sources said on Tuesday. The hacking attempts occurred within the last month or so, the sources said. Two sources said investigators believe that, like hackers who earlier
attacked the central data servers of key Democratic Party organizations, the mobile phone attacks were carried out by hackers connected to the Russian government. One source said that some of those whose phones were targeted by hackers had been asked by the FBI to turn over their phones so that investigators can “image” them. REUTERS

BRIEF Aetna to offer Apple Watch at a discount to certain customers U.S. health insurer Aetna Inc. said it would offer some customers discounts on Apple Inc.’s smartwatch, marking the first deal made by the tech giant with an insurer for its devices. Aetna, which has about 23 million members in the United States, will also give away the Apple Watch for free to its nearly 50,000 employees, Aetna said in a statement on Tuesday. The deal could help Apple boost the appeal of its Watch to potential customers as the company looks to target health and fitness conscious users with its new device. Aetna will discount a significant portion of the cost, and will offer users monthly payment options to pay off the remaining amount. The discounts on the devices will vary for customers, according to Aetna spokesman Ethan Slavin. However, reaction to the second edition of the Apple Watch has been muted since its launch earlier this month with the device likely to remain a niche offering, according to some analysts. REUTERS

Houston police identify shooting suspect who wounded nine people DeSai, 46, was shot dead by police, who said he opened fire on motorists near a shopping center in the affluent West University Place neighborhood Monday morning. A Houston lawyer suspected of wounding nine people in a shooting spree Monday has been formally identified by the medical examiner as 46-year-old Nathan DeSai, police said. DeSai, 46, was shot dead by police, who said he opened fire on motorists near a shopping center in the affluent West University Place neighborhood Monday morning. Authorities have said
DeSai was wearing military-style clothing and had Nazi paraphernalia on him at the time of the shooting. They said he was armed with a handgun and that 2,600 rounds of ammunition and a rifle were found in his car. Both firearms had been legally purchased, they said. Memorial Hermann Hospital said two of the victims were still hospitalized and were in good condition. The hospital said it had released three others. Ben Taub Hospital, where some of the victims had been taken Monday, could not confirm if any were still there. DeSai, who received his law degree from the University of Tulsa in 1998, had a small law firm that closed about six months ago, according to his former law partner.

Prakash DeSai, the suspect’s father, told ABC television’s Houston affiliate Monday that his son had been “upset about his law practice not going well” and money woes. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has said there was no indication the shooting was linked to a radical group. REUTERS

Hubble spots evidence of water plumes on Jupiter’s moon Europa Astronomers on Monday said they have spotted evidence of water vapor plumes rising from Jupiter’s moon Europa, a finding that might make it easier to learn whether life exists in the warm, salty ocean hidden beneath its icy surface. The apparent plumes detected by the Hubble Space Telescope shoot about 125 miles above Europa’s surface before, presumably, raining material back down onto the moon’s surface, NASA said. Europa, considered one of the most promising candidates for life in the solar system beyond Earth, boasts a global ocean with twice as much water as in all of Earth’s seas hidden under a layer of extremely cold and hard ice of unknown
A composite image shows suspected plumes of water vapor erupting at the seven o’clock position off the limb of Jupiter’s moon Europa. NASA/ESA/W.SPARKS/USGS
thickness. While drilling through the ice to test ocean water for signs of life would be a daunting task, sampling water from the plumes might be a simpler project. “If the plumes are real, it potentially gives us easier access to the ocean below … without needing to drill into miles of ice,” said lead researcher Williams Sparks of the
Space Telescope Science Institute in Greenbelt, Maryland. Europa is about 1,900 miles in diameter, slightly smaller than Earth’s moon. Among Jupiter’s four largest moons, Europa is the second closest to the biggest planet in the solar system. The telescope observed the plumes three times in 2014, mostly around Europa’s southern polar region, scientists said in a conference call with reporters. On Earth, life is found everywhere where there is water, energy and nutrients, so scientists have a special interest in places elsewhere in the solar system, like Europa, with similar characteristics, said Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s astrophysics division. Philly designers on the rise
Who knew you could draw style inspiration from a trip to Lowe’s?
Philly is already known worldwide for its amazing music and food scenes, as well as for being home to the most passionate sports fans in the country. (Go Eagles!)
Well, this is no fun: Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber split up about a year ago: moving into separate NYC apartments, juggling parental hand-offs, all while putting in the occasional public appearance, as they did at last year’s Oscars. There’s no tabloid-y joy to be had here: Both are fine actors we probably take for granted, as we did their coupledom, and both seem like very nice people who deserve happiness. Sad face.
designers through the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Center City. Here are three designers from the program who should be on your radar.
Nigel Richards
Hometown: Philadelphia Site: 611lifestyle.com Aside from being a fashion designer, Nigel Richards is a DJ, and his lines are influenced by his world travels playing techno music. He was bitten by the fashion bug painting T-shirts in high school and crafting record bags for transporting vinyl. In terms of style inspiration, Richards cites the character Dickie Greenleaf from the film “Talented Mr. Ripley,” known for his effortless, classic 1950s style with impeccably tailored suits and crisp Italian shirts. “I design for the dashing gentleman who is classy, outspoken, confident and willing to take some chances,” says Richards. “I also design for the women who love to wear men’s clothing.”

We got nothin’) were one of those couples. Note the past tense, because, sadly, they are now no longer one of those couples. The acclaimed actors, who’ve been together for 11 years and had two children — and who we sometimes forgot were a couple, because we didn’t think to always invade their privacy — publicly announced their split, after noting they sort of kind of split

the word There are celebrity couples whose names you turn into fun portmanteaux, like “Brangelina” or (digging up an old Colbertism) “Filliam H. Milan Harris
Hometown: Philadelphia Site: milanodirouge.com Another local designer inspired by music, Milan Harris credits Rihanna as being a major influence in her work. “She’s edgy, fearless and can confidently wear anything,” she says of the chart-topping singer. While Milan didn’t always know what she wanted to do, she admits she’s always known who she wanted to be: “A woman that lives life on her own terms, that’s about her business and that empowers other women,” she adds. Her Milano di Rouge streetwear brand is unisex. “I was that girlfriend that would wear her boyfriends’ clothing. I loved the quality, comfort and fit of men’s clothing, and I think it looks really nice on women.”

He knew he wanted to be a fashion designer at a young age but decided to study architecture instead. “I thought architecture would better prepare me in the future if I decided to pursue a fashion career. I was right,” he says. Designing mostly for women, Booker is inspired by strong women: “Those who view their clothing and handbags as wearable works of art.” He adds that he draws inspiration from the materials found at home improvement store Lowe’s.

We had a lot of ice packs that we would put on our wrists and neck, and little fans. And, of course, everywhere you go on an independent film, nothing has air

16 THINGS TO DO
Dino’s Backstage is more than a A new venue in Glenside aims to transport music lovers back to the good old days. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Most bar-restaurant managers are seen, but rarely heard, with the owners quietly mulling in the background, if there at all. At Dino’s Backstage and The Celebrity Room — a sophisticated new supper club and live musical cabaret space — that’s never going to be the case. Not with Michael Richard Kelly-Cataldi as its entertainment director and Dino J. Kelly-Cataldi, the plush space’s owner. Michael is a renowned cabaret singer who has performed throughout the world and now hosts Sunday soirees in The Celebrity Room, where he sings his heart out with the Tom Adams Trio beside him. You will never
see another venue manager make an entrance with a spotlight, in a Tom Ford tux, wow an audience for two sets with a powerful baritone voice singing songs written before 1964 (“with just a few from the ’70s for the kids, says Michael), and belt out a theme song he’s specially written for Dino’s Backstage. Then again, you have to know how much of a shared love letter this room is between the pair. Dino is a legendary Philly restaurant owner whose Napoleon Cafe was a sensation in the ’90s at its 15th and Locust streets. “We wanted a bigger house, with bigger property and to entertain more, says the equally well-dressed Dino of leaving Philly and opening the duo’s first business in Glenside, a home decor shop, Kelly-Cataldi Home. “That’s where we got such a strong mailing list and connection to our neighbors in Glenside, says Michael. They’ve been a couple

a twist when you consider we’ll host a YouTube channel with live performances,” says Michael. When Dino’s Back-
stage — The Celebrity Room (287 N. Keswick Ave. ) opens officially with a ribbon cutting Sept. 29, it will pop the cork on a stage that regularly features local singer Paula Johns (every Wednesday) and cabaret greats such as Marilyn Maye (Oct. 2122) and Eddie Bruce (Nov. 18-20). Dino, however, won’t be staring lovingly at them as he does at Michael when he sings. Still, there are plenty of other things to gaze at and take in at Dino’s. In terms of dining, after you’ve gawked at Dino’s lit-up menu (“easier on the eyes in the dark,” says General Manager Thomas J. Finnegan), executive chef Scott Howlett’s culinary options are as handsome to look at as they are to taste during dinner and Sunday brunch. The rooms are a delightful throwback to another time — crystal halo chandeliers, black and white photos of family and familiar Hollywood stars
on every wall, leather banquettes inside and black cabana lounge decor outside — yet one with state-of-the-art amenities such as digital stage lighting and a Peavey soundsystem just introduced to the U.S. “The renovations definitely came in at just under $2 million,” says Michael. “I think of it as a smaller version of the Taj Mahal … a giant playhouse for adults,” says Dino. Asked why they chose to open a live music space next door to the Keswick Theatre, rather than just a white-linen restaurant, and Michael was quick to respond: “We decided to do a venue with the musical/cabaret component, because no one was doing it — at all,” he says. “If you have a restaurant with entertainment, versus a restaurant without entertainment, I’m going to the restaurant with entertainment 10 times out of 10.”

Boasting the largest concentration of original 18th- and early 19th-century residential architecture in the United States, Society Hill wears its pedigree on its sleeve. Graceful Georgian and Federal town homes bear plaques designating them historic properties. Three story “trinities,” originally featuring one room per floor, anticipated the tiny house movement by a couple of centuries. In fact, the entire neighborhood — loosely bounded by Front and Eighth, Walnut and Lombard streets — is on the National Register of Historic Places. “It’s first and foremost a historic neighborhood,” says Martha Levine, vice president of the Society Hill Civic Association (SHCA). “Homeowners here feel it’s special for that reason and want to safeguard its provenance.” Preservation is one of the roles of SHCA, which Levine describes as active in keeping “undesirable development from encroaching on this national
treasure. We are stewards aiming to preserve what we are lucky enough to have.” The residents’ association also uses membership dues and contributions to provide services — weekly sidewalk cleaning, upgraded lighting and tree planting, among others — not typically available from the city. “We work to keep [the neighborhood] safe, clean and beautiful,” says Levine. Jonathan Barach, founder of the Barach Group and a Society Hill resident for more than a decade, admires the neighborhood’s quiet elegance. Unlike the commercial neighborhoods surrounding it, “Society Hill is almost entirely residential,” says Barach, who compares it to New York’s

home
Upper East Side in this regard. It’s “a village within the city,” says Levine. “People say hello on the street. It’s peaceful — a real neighborhood. There’s a feeling of community here.” Once exclusively inhabited by older, more established residents, Society Hill has begun to attract young professionals looking to start families. With the McCall School Catchment one of the most desirable in the city, and highly regarded private and parochial schools adding value, Society Hill presents an appealing place to raise kids. The neighborhood is also attractive to empty-
nesters who appreciate the lifestyle Philly offers but don’t want to downsize. Society Hill’s town homes offer the benefits of city living without compromising on space. “There’s so much to do in Philadelphia,” says Barach. “The second their kids get to college, [empty-nesters] are selling their homes in the suburbs and moving here.” Barach has also seen an influx of new residents coming from New York and New Jersey. “They are buying homes here,” he says, “and commuting to Manhattan for work.”

New in the neighborhood: In a neighborhood that prides itself in preserving its historic character, a hot topic among residents is the fate of a stretch of Fifth Street just north of Pine where a strip of commercial properties — including the neighborhood’s only supermarket — is under consideration for mixed use development. Once the basics are covered, consider … 1. Monogram hooks or personal baskets Kids will be more likely to put away their things if they have a designated space — at least for the first few times. 2. Family photos or mementos It’s always nice to remember what’s important on the way out the door. 3. A mirror You’re welcome, lipstick teeth.
Creative baskets are an easy way to manage clutter.
The entryway is one of the most important spaces in your home. Our expert’s design tips keep it functional and welcoming. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Fall has a way of reminding us how much stuff we have. Jackets and bookbags and soccer cleats join the dreaded front door pile, soon followed by snow boots and scarves and mit-
tens. Which is a shame, because the humble entryway has long been walked all over. Tired of hunting through a stack of junk mail to find your keys? Follow these designer tips.
Organize your essentials As a high-traffic area that introduces your home, the entryway is a delicate balance of form and function. But first thing’s first — that tangle of umbrellas and dog leashes need to go. “Most of us struggle

with the issue of the ‘drop-spot’ upon entering the home,” says Carol Grundy, creative partner at interior design firm Homeesque. “Remember, clutter is consuming for you and your guests. First impressions are everything.” Baskets are an easy, affordable way to make piles more palatable, and if space allows, a bench with storage is an ace shoe solution.
Add personal touches Although your entryway
should be practical, there’s also plenty of opportunity to welcome family and friends with personal touches and statement pieces. “Because entryways aren’t normally very large, you can use interesting design elements which would be too overwhelming in a larger space,” says Kelly Nelson, principal at Kelly Nelson Designs. “Think about using a spectacular wallpaper or an interesting pattern on the floor or a wonderful, larger-than-life light fixture. Don’t just use plain
hooks — find interesting ones that look good even when nothing is hanging on them.”

Work with the space you have
Let there be light Like any space, an entryway can only be as successful as its lighting. “Lighting is important not only for the obvious reason that we need to see, but for the detail and design that it can bring,” says Grundy. “Illuminating any space will help it feel larger, warmer, cleaner and brighter. No matter your square footage, creating some type of entry moment is important. “Even if you don’t have an entry per se, but just more of a wall leading to the door, think wallpaper or paint to set it aside” says Nelson. “I would do great hooks on the wall and a floating shelf — even if it’s narrow, you have a place to leave your keys and collect the mail.”

A million bucks in Philly’s real estate scene will take you far, from Federal-style Society Hill mansions to ultra-luxe modern pads in Fishtown/Kensington. Two to five million dollars will go further: Rittenhouse Square condos, Northern Liberties lofts with sweeping bridge views, Chestnut Hill brickand-ivy mansions. But what about $16 million? Or, to be more precise, $16.8 million. This incredible Old City home, at 232 Walnut St., is surprisingly not the
most expensive home listed in 2016. (It’s actually the second-most, based on Curbed Philly’s estimates, but only by a couple thousand dollars.) So what’s inside? Well, a lot of room for cars, that’s for sure. With two bedrooms, four full-size bathrooms and a five-car garage, this grand masterpiece of a home is dramatic and detailed, with every swoonworthy room more impressive than the last. Enter through a set of double mahogany doors off Walnut Street into a grand foyer, where a threestory steel and wood circular staircase will provoke “oohs and “aahs from guests — and probably from you, too. From the foyer, enter a professional

office with wet bar and a door to a temperaturecontrolled wine cellar. Or take the stairs to the second floor, which houses a living area, sunroom and chef’s kitchen, decked out with floor-to-ceiling windows, custom Australian cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, French granite countertops and a custom backsplash. A gorgeous dome ceiling adds drama to the master bedroom suite, which also features a wood-burning fireplace and a clawfoot tub, Onyx stall shower and walk-in closet with build-in cabinetry and storage off the master bath suite. Guests also have a private en-suite bath with a granite vanity, stall shower and enclosed watershed. At every turn, this home offers a respite from city life, from the sprawling backyard garden and koi pond, to the ultimate basement game room. But when you’re ready to rejoin the world, you’re just steps from Independence Mall, Society Hill and shopping, restaurants, the waterfront and more.

Hellickson has proven to be perfect rental for Phillies
NFL power rankings | by Luke Miller No. 4
If he walks, the Phillies “ace” will have had his best season in years during a brief stint in Philly.
No. 1
KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us
Perhaps the most surprising performance this season for the Phillies was that of Jeremy Hellickson. When the team acquired him from Arizona in November, the move seemed more of a safety net. Hellickson had been known as an “innings eater” in his career, and with a young staff as is, bringing in Hellickson would provide some stability as the prospects worked their way up. It turned out, though, that the 29-year-old was the best pitcher in the Phillies rotation. “I just felt good every time out,” Hellickson said following his start against Miami on Sept. 17. That outing proved to be the pinnacle of his 2016 campaign. The righthander tossed his first complete game shutdown since 2011. With a week remaining in the season, Hellickson finds himself atop the rotation with 12 wins, 150 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA in 185.2 innings. He credits his off-themound preparation for his bounce-back season. Before arriving in Philadelphia, Hellickson had gone

10-17 with a 4.57 ERA in the previous two seasons. “I felt good in between starts,” Hellickson said. “I’m recovering like I was earlier in my career so I’m able to work on some stuff in the bullpen and am able to work out a little more than I have. I’m just feeling really good.” It was a welcomed sight to see Hellickson respond like he did in his first year with the Phillies, but his effort most likely earns him a sizable pay check this offseason. His one-year, $7 million deal expires this winter, which means the Iowa native will look to cash in. The Phillies would love to have him back next year as he proved to be every bit of an innings-eater while also looking domi-

nant at times. Hellickson also meshed well with the younger guys, proving to be somewhat of a mentor to players like Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff. Hellickson will test the market, looking to maximize his value — as he should — after going through a two-year stretch where it looked as though he had fallen off the map. Philadelphia would be wise to make an offer, but not at the expense of getting into a hole when it comes time to offer new deals to the younger stars. If Thursday’s start against Atlanta proves to be the final time Hellickson dons the red and white pinstripes, it’ll be a one-year stint where he did everything he was supposed to and more.

Eagles (3-0)
Steelers (2-1)
Yeah, this is a really large jump, but the Eagles have earned it. Hanging the largest loss of the week on the reigning rankings No. 1 is a far cry from looking good against Chicago and Cleveland.
As good as the Steelers offense can look, that was how bad it looked in Week 3. Ben Roethlisberger was off, his receivers were dropping passes, and DeAngelo Williams couldn’t get going.
No. 5
No. 9
Broncos (3-0)
Chiefs (2-1)
Panthers (1-2)
Trevor Siemian tossed four touchdown passes, including a 55-yarder to Demaryius Thomas that sealed the win. The Broncos defense and running game make them the NFL’s elite.
Kansas City didn’t even need an offense to take the field against the Jets Sunday. They had eight turnovers, two defensive scores, and limited an offense that had decimated the Bills a week earlier to three points.
Protecting Cam Newton has to become an immediate priority for the Panthers. It sounds crazy that it wouldn’t be already, but evidence from the Broncos and Vikings games looks bad.
No. 2
No. 6
No. 10
Patriots (3-0)
Packers (2-1)
Texans (2-1)
Defeating Houston with their third-stringer at QB was something, particularly after the way the Patriots looked to be on the ropes at the end of the Dolphins game after Garoppolo was injured.
After Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes in the first half on their way to a 31-3 lead, the Packers just managed to run out the clock in the second half — just.
In a game where neither team topped 300 yards, the Texans turned the ball over three times and took it from the Patriots zero. That’s how you get shutout. They need to bounce back at home in Week 4.
No. 3
No. 7
Vikings (3-0)
Seahawks (2-1)
This defense is for real. A week after handling Aaron Rodgers the Vikings sacked Cam Newton eight times and managed to come back from a 10-point deficit while the offense gained just 211 yards.
The Seahawks alleviated concerns that the first two weeks were something larger than the regular season opening malaise we’ve seen in Seattle the past few years. It looks like Russell Wilson will be OK.

Eagles Super Bowl odds increase, lead NFL in many categories The 3-0 Eagles started the year as the third least likely team to win the Super Bowl, handicapped at 200-1. After their Week 3 walloping of the Steelers, the team is now given a 20-1 chance of winning Super Bowl 51. That’s a big change. Through three games Philly has allowed nine points per game, the fewest in the league. Their 71 yards per game allowed on the ground is second only to the Packers and their 6 takeaways with zero giveaways is best in all of football. Offensively, the team’s total of 30.7 points scored per game is second behind just Atlanta (fresh off a 45-point performance Monday night). And as a product of those stats, the Eagles lead the NFL in point differential at +65. The Eagles are galloping full speed into a bye week and will have a long break before they are back in action in Detroit on Oct. 9.

“It was a start. It is early on,” Brandon Graham said following the 34-3 win. “Everybody is still getting acclimated with the system. But I am just happy we stayed together as a team.” Some other notes as provided by the Eagles following the Week 3 win: • Eagles QB Carson Wentz has attempted 102 consecutive passes without an INT, the longest streak ever to begin an NFL career (ESPN Stats & Info).

Aries Learn through trial and error. Take a practical approach to any job you are given and leave nothing to chance. An unusual relationship will help you advance.
Libra Take seriously matters concerning institutions and government agencies. A practical approach will be necessary. Too much of anything will be your downfall.
Taurus You’ve got more going for you than you realize. Take pride in what you do and show off the skills and talents you have mastered. Travel and romance are highlighted.
Scorpio Approach whatever you do with a practical plan and an open mind. Being receptive to different techniques will make things easier and more fun.
Gemini Refuse to let anyone talk you into doing something you don’t want to do. Focus on personal improvements, and avoid indulgence and overspending.
Sagittarius If you aren’t sure about something, don’t make a move. A risky venture will leave you stressed out and cause you to rethink your strategy.
Cancer You can make positive changes at home, but you must stick to your budget to avoid criticism. Your insight into trends will prompt a good professional choice.
Capricorn Nothing will be as it appears. Everything will cost more and take up more time than you had planned. You need to downsize and cut your overhead.
Leo Don’t let demanding people lean on you. Ask for favors and incentives to make whatever needs to be done worth your while. Don’t let anyone boss you around.
Aquarius A job opportunity will develop if you send out your resume. Get the inside scoop from a trusted party to help you bring about a positive personal change.
Virgo Express your thoughts and feelings, and find out where you stand. You will have the upper hand as long as you eliminate any negativity before it has time to fester.
Pisces Speak up and refuse to let anyone push you around. Spice up the way you present yourself to others. Update your look. Romance is highlighted. EUGENIA LAST
