3 things you need to know PHILIPPINE LEADER TELLS OBAMA ‘GO TO HELL’, CAN BUY ARMS ELSEWHERE
1
Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday told U.S. President Barack Obama to “go to hell” and said the United States had refused to sell some weapons to his country but he did not care because Russia and China were willing suppliers. In his latest salvo, Duterte said he was realigning his foreign policy because the United States had failed the Philippines and added that at some point, “I will break up with America.” It was not clear what he meant by “break up.” During three tangential and fiercely worded speeches in Manila, Duterte said the United States did not want to sell missiles and other weapons, but Russia and China had told him they could provide them easily. “Although it may sound s— to you, it is my sacred duty to keep the integrity of this republic and the people healthy,” Duterte said. GOOGLE TAKES ON APPLE WITH NEW PIXEL PHONE, HOME ASSISTANT
2
Alphabet Inc.’s Google on Tuesday announced a new “Pixel” smartphone and a virtual reality headset, the company’s latest effort to sell consumers on Google-branded devices and to challenge Apple Inc.’s iPhone at the high end of the more than $400 billion global market. The new phone starts at a price of $649, and Google is working with exclusively with Verizon Communications in the United States, Google executives said at a launch event in San Francisco. The string of announcements, including a new Wi-Fi router and its voice-activated digital assistant for the living room, “Home,” is the clearest sign yet that Google intends to compete directly with Apple, Amazon.com and even its own Android mobile operating system customers to create a system of devices and hardware that meet every digital need. LAWSUIT: PEPSICO MISLEADS BUYERS OF NAKED JUICE
3
PepsiCo Inc. has been accused in a lawsuit of misleading shoppers into believing its Naked juices and smoothies primarily contain “high-value” ingredients such as kale, when the main ingredient is often cheaper, less nutritious apple juice. According to a complaint filed on Tuesday in the Brooklyn, New York, federal court, PepsiCo emblazons healthy fruits and vegetables on Naked labels, and touts how the drinks have “no sugar added,” when they actually contain roughly as much sugar as a can of Pepsi. In a statement, PepsiCo called the lawsuit “baseless,” and said there was nothing misleading about its Naked products. REUTERS METRO’S NEWS QUIZ

Kaine vs. Pence debate was expert vs. expert Two “policy wonks” attempted to do what Trump and Clinton didn’t, an election scholar told Metro. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
Those who watched Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine debate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence in Farmville, Virginia, saw two experienced politicians trying to penetrate issues that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump only grazed during their first faceoff. “This might be the best shot voters will get to take a deep dive to see what these people will do if they are elected,” elections expert Michael Miller, who teaches political science at Barnard and Columbia University, told Metro. Pence has the backing from conservative bona fides. He’s got a pretty long and distinguished career
in Washington, where they really respect him conservative circles. “Trump has a bombastic personality that leads to rhetoric in debates that leads away from these details.” The VP debate “may be nerdy by comparison,” but was a good opportunity to hear about things the things voters need to hear about from two people with strong policy backgrounds. “It’s what voting is all about,” he said. Final tallies of viewership will be revealed today, and could contrast with the 51 million TV viewers who watched the 2012 vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. That was a big audience for a VP showdown, considering this year’s first presidential debate reeled in a substantial 84 million from TV alone. The impact of this debate is less about who was better, and more about who fumbled. “You kind of want a
quiet night,” said Miller. “A mistake is what garners media attention.” In this particularly stormy election, creating any waves in the media or in the election outcome would require a major accident. “The best way to help Trump is to not commit any fatal error,” said Miller. “Do no obvious damage.“ In that sense, Pence has redefined what it means to “balance” a ticket, he said. “It’s really about matching strengths to weaknesses, and I think Pence is pretty well chosen in that sense,” Miller said For Kaine, the goal as Clinton’s running mate last night was less to balance the ticket and more to remind voters of the things Pence wanted to distract from: shocking news stories, and Trump’s tax-records controversy, for example. Kaine’s approach was more to “try to pin Trump to Pence, and inject the
unfavorable things back into the living rooms,” Miller said. “It is very tempting to look at any one of these moments and say this is the one that changed the race. We don’t even think the presidential debates ever changed the race in history. They tend to swing polls a little bit. The VP debate is even less salient in election outcomes.” The impact of this debate will be determined by the way each campaign utilizes their pocket card. With a mere 33 days until the election, “the crucial resource for the candidates right now is time.” “Every day the Trump campaign spends explaining and defending him that’s one day lost to really convince the people of why to vote for him. On the Democratic side, the final moments will have to be spent reminding voters of the bad things occurred throughout the election year,” Miller said.

BRIEFS First pro-marijuana legalization ad features ex-Boston police oďŹƒcer A former Boston cop stars in the ďŹ rst television ad sponsored by advocates for legalizing marijuana in the Bay State. The ad, produced by the Yes on 4 campaign, features retired oďŹƒcer Tom Nolan, who is now an associate professor of criminology and the director of graduate programs in criminology at Merrimack College.
In the spot, which premiered this week, Nolan calls voting yes on Question 4 a “smart choice to protect families, noting that the law requires labeling, childproof packaging and bans advertising to minors. He also notes smoking marijuana in public would continue to be banned under the proposal. “It will tax and regulate marijuana for adults 21 and over, bringing millions in revenue for schools or law
enforcement,â€? Nolan concludes. “Vote yes on 4: smart regulations protecting families.â€? Those opposed to the measure had a dierent take, with No on 4 campaign manager Nick Bayer providing MassLive .com with a dismissive response. “This is a shameless attempt to deceive voters because the reality is Question 4 authorizes the sale of high-potency pot edibles like candies and gummies that are inherently attractive to kids,
and allows for advertising pot on TV, billboards and the internet where it’s sure to be seen by our teens, he wrote. “Question 4 would mean more drugged driving problems and less control for homeowners and communities, all reasons doctors, nurses and police chiefs all oppose Question 4. A recent WBZ/UMass poll found that while 53 percent of voters support Question 4. Clown sighting at Merrimack College a hoax Multiple campuses responded to reports of sightings from one Twitter account called Clown Watch. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us
Reports of an armed man in a clown suit on Merrimack College’s campus Monday night were deemed a hoax, according to President Christopher E. Hopey. Merrimack initiated its emergency response procedures after campus police received reports of an armed man in a clown suit inside Monican Center, a residence hall on the North Andover campus. All residents of that hall were evacuated and others on campus were ordered to stay indoors while police searched the building. Andover, North Andover and state police responded to join Merrimack College police officers. The precautions were
lifted about a half an hour later. “We now know this was a hoax perpetrated on social media, not just on our campus but on several others throughout New England last night — a hoax fed by a hysteria that has, by media accounts, now affected communities in 26 states,â€? Hopey said in a letter to the Merrimack College community. “This is the world in which we live, with very real threats intermingled with false alarms.â€? Hopey also said that officials must treat every threat as real and serious and that “we must also not let a hoax like this deter anyone from reporting situations or people that make them feel unsafe.â€? Merrimack College spokesman Jim Chiavelli said that several campuses responded to reports of clown sightings all stemming from the same Twitter account called Clown Watch. Chiavelli said that he wrote a complaint to Twitter on Monday night about the user.Â

Worcester man charged with crime spree has bail set at $250K The man charged with two sexual assaults, carjacking, armed robbery and more was previously held without bail. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us
A Worcester man who police say went on an hourlong August crime spree that included rape, kidnapping, assault and robbery was ordered held on $250,000 cash bail. Antonio Damon, 35, was previously held without bail on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated rape, strangulation, armed robbery, kidnapping, carjacking, inde-
cent assault and battery, breaking and entering and more following his alleged Aug. 9 spree. He had been arraigned in Worcester Central District Court. Damon was indicted on the charges on Sept. 22 which moved his case to Worcester Superior Court, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. He was arraigned there on Monday and his bail was set at $250,000 cash or $2.5 million with surety. Damon pleaded not guilty to his charges, which include three counts of aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, kidnapping, carjacking, two counts of strangulation or suffocation, two counts of armed robbery, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to rape,

indecent assault and battery, breaking and entering in the daytime and putting a person in fear, intimidation of a witness and two counts of assault and battery, ac-
cording to the Telegram. Damon was arrested after police responded to a reported rape around 5:17 p.m. Aug. 9. A 27-year-old woman told police that a man
entered her office and raped her at knifepoint. Just minutes later around 5:30, another officer on patrol in the area was stopped by a man who reported that
his 21-year-old girlfriend was carjacked. That male suspect forced the woman to drive off with him in the car, police said. Then, a driver reported being involved in a hit-and-run with the same type of vehicle that had been carjacked. Officers found the carjacked vehicle a short time later. It was empty and police said that the woman jumped out of the car after the male suspect sexually assaulted her. Dispatchers then received a report of an armed robbery in progress at a business around the corner from the location of the car. Damon was found there after a 38-year-old man ran from the building, yelling to police that he was inside, officials said.

Boston pairs with Samaritans group to help prevent suicides Each year, suicides in Massachusetts outnumber traffic fatalities and homicides combined, according to data from the suicide prevention organization Samaritans. In fact, suicides are four times more frequent here than homicides. “People just don’t know that,” said Steve Mongeau, executive director of Samaritans. “And it’s entirely [because of] the shame and stigma behind it.” For more than 40 years, Samaritans has been serving the Greater Boston community and beyond to provide a 24/7 crisis hotline (that, as of a year ago, is also open to texts), grief support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and community education and outreach initiatives to better inform teachers, guidance counselors, therapists and more about the warning signs for someone who is suicidal. “I often say that we

have all these organs and if you have a heart problem or cancer, people talk about it and share and try to help,” Mongeau said. “But if it’s your mind, [you hear] ‘Suck it up. Deal with it.’” Mongeau has been working to turn that reaction around by holding workshops in schools and other community organizations. Now that Mayor Marty Walsh has recently announced a partnership between the City of Boston and Samaritans, Mongeau knows that his organization will be able to help more people. In the partnership, Samaritans will bring its
workshops and gatekeeper program to those who work with populations that are at a high risk for suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for those between 15 and 24 years old, Mongeau said. The elderly and veteran communities also have high rates of suicide. Samaritans’ gatekeeper program helps better inform the communities’ “gatekeepers” — roles like coaches, nurses, teachers, police and so on — about the risks and warning signs of suicide. If they know that to look for, these gatekeepers can better reach out to those people in need and encourage them to get help. Samaritans is partnering with the city to set up gatekeepers within the Office of Veteran Services, Centers for Youth and Families and some Public Health Commission programs. “Body Say” singer Demi Lovato gave a big fat “bye, haters” on Twitter Tuesday, writing that she will be getting some R&R next year. “So excited for 2017,” Lovato tweeted. “Taking a break from music and the spotlight.. I am not meant for this business and the media.” Lovato, who is not known to back away from a fight, might have done just that after catching shade for her Taylor Swift dis in Glamour. “To be honest, and this will probably get me
in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body,” Lovato told the magazine, referring to Taylor Swift’s posse of pals. “It’s not realistic,” she added. “And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment.” Lovato quit Twitter earlier this year after another virtual confrontation, but after one whole day, she returned. So see ya tomorrow, maybe? KIM AQUILINA
Nice try, Ric Flair I think it’s safe to say none of us saw this coming. During his selftitled radio show, former WWE wrestler Ric Flair was asked if he had ever encountered any celebrity “riders,” which is apparently uncool slang for sexual escapades. He replied that he’d had dozens but specifically name-dropped Academy Award winner Halle Berry. Flair claims to have slept with Berry in 1997 following her divorce from David Justice. As expected, Berry’s team has strongly denied these allegations, claiming that she never slept with Ric Flair and doesn’t even know who he is. Very Mariah Carey of her. No offense Ric, but we’re going with Halle Berry’s version of events.

J. Cole left some fans hopeful and others heartbroken this weekend at the end of his set at Meadows Fest in Queens. He told the audience, “Before I get out of here, listen. This is my last show for a very long time.” Some thought this meant that the rapper was announcing his retirement, while others anticipate him hunkering down in the studio to produce some new music. Maybe he’s just having a little nip/tuck and will back refreshed in six to eight weeks. Kidding!
But this wasn’t the only thing that had fans of artist who was born in Frankfurt, Germany, talking. On Tuesday night, J. Cole’s Twitter account was hacked, subjecting his more than 8 million followers to ridiculous song titles (Smokin On Dat Phizzurp Pack) and conspiracy theories about Kim Kardashian faking being robbed. Weird. We’re not holding our breath for a response from J. Cole — the rapper hasn’t actually tweeted since March.

This December, the touring production of “Jersey Boys” hits the 10-year point, and November marks its Broadway debut 11 years ago. The production returned to Boston for a two-week run at the Boston Opera House this week, but many productions of the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical, which tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, are winding down. The Las Vegas show just closed after eight years, making it the longest-running Broadway show on the strip — the Broadway production closes in January and the West End production in London closes next March. Meanwhile, the touring production, which is directed by twotime Tony Award-winner Des McAnuff and stars Matthew Dailey (Tommy DeVito), Aaron De Jesus (Frankie Valli), Keith Hines (Nick Massi) and Drew Seeley (Bob Gaudio), is scheduled only into next summer. Let’s just say it’s going out on a high note. “This show won’t ever go away. It will be back,” says De Jesus, who joined the cast almost five years ago in the Vegas produc-
tion, but in another role. He moved center stage to play the real-life group’s lead vocalist a year ago. “I understudied the role of Frankie while I was playing Joey. It gave me a fair amount of experience,” says De Jesus. “It took me about a month to find my groove as Frankie.” The story about the lives of these everyday Jersey boys behind such 1960s hits as “Sherry” and “Rag Doll,” puts the audience behind the scenes, too. “One of my favorites moments is at the end of act one, when the song ‘Dawn’ begins and you see what the camera at the ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ sees. Then the entire thing turns 180 degrees and the audience is backstage looking at what it’s like to be in the group.” De Jesus says it really helps being in a long-running musical if you genuinely love the songs. “After four-and-a-half years of being in this show, if I am in an elevator and ‘Sherry’ comes on, I don’t cringe or roll my eyes,” he says. “In fact, I will start tapping my foot and smiling. I can’t say that about other musicals I’ve been in.”

Mark Wahlberg loves working with director Peter Berg. And Berg loves Wahlburgers (but more on that later). The duo worked together on “Lone Survivor, and now the new “Deep Horizon, the true story of the BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, which killed 11 people and caused the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history. You’ve worked on three ďŹ lms with Peter Berg. You’re friends now, right? Well, he is from New York and I’m from Boston, so that’s a big problem. [Laughs] How did this collaboration come about? It’s one of those stories where we have the same agent and he introduced us. In fact, he was trying to get us together for some time. But for one reason or another, we resisted. But when we finally got together for “Survivorâ€? I was like, “I could make 20 movies with this man.â€? We motivate each other. We support each other. He focuses on the story and has a mindset to see the whole picture, rather than deal with his own agenda, which is very rare.

restaurants in Boston. But he keeps saying that Wahlburgers’ burgers were the best. He tried the turkey, classic and fish. He ate them all; he could not stop. What is your favorite dish? Oh God, you’re asking someone who craves everything all the time. I’ve been eating very healthy. For my birthday, my wife hosted a dinner at home and brought the chef of my favorite Italian restaurant, but I could not eat everything that I wanted. The problem is that I gained a lot of weight for “Deep Horizon and “Patriots Day. Then I saw Michael Bay, the producer for “Transformers, and he said, “Friend, what’s going on here? So I had to do the 10-week training program in three. What was your meeting with the real-life Mike Williams like? Mike and I met as soon as production started. He was a little skeptical so I was asked to spend some time with him. But I refused. I wanted him to
work with me throughout the film. No one knew better than him the real story. Only he knew what was behind that platform. And he was the last to leave it. I thought he could be our eyes and ears to make sure that everything we were doing was authentic. Is there a greater sense of responsibility when actual — and tragic — events are made into movies? Look, if you do not do it right, you’ll find out. But that’s why I knew that Pete [Berg] was the perfect match for “Deep Horizon as well as “Patriots Day. Because he cares as much as I do and knows how important it is to do things right. The amazing thing is that once you define the tone, everyone knows what the standards are. It is telling the story in the best way possible and not meeting your expectations as an actor. All this mania to seek your own benefit as an actor goes out the window, because for me it is about making a great movie.

As a high-traffic area that introduces your home, the entryway is a delicate balance of form and function. But first thing’s first — that tangle of umbrellas and dog leashes need to go. “Most of us struggle with the issue of the ‘drop-spot’ upon entering the home,” says Carol Grundy, creative partner at interior design firm Homeesque. “Remember, clutter is consuming for
you and your guests. First impressions are everything.” Baskets are an easy, affordable way to make piles more palatable, and if space allows, a bench with storage is an ace shoe solution.
Add personal touches Although your entryway should be practical, there’s also plenty of opportunity to welcome family and friends with personal touches and statement pieces. “Because entryways aren’t normally very large, you can use interesting design elements which would be too overwhelming in a larger space,” says Kelly Nelson, principal at Kelly Nelson Designs. “Think about using a spectacular wallpaper or an interesting pattern on the floor or a wonderful, larger-than-life light fixture. Don’t just use plain hooks — find interesting ones that look good even when nothing is hanging on them.”
Let there be light Like any space, an entryway can only be as successful as its lighting. “Lighting is important not only for the obvious reason that we need to see, but for the detail and design that it can bring,” says Grundy. “Illuminating any space will help it

feel larger, warmer, cleaner and brighter. Add a soft area rug for texture and definition and it’s easy to start to feel at home.”
Work with the space you have No matter your square footage, creating some type of entry moment is important. “Even if you don’t have an entry per se, but just more of a wall leading to the door, think wallpaper or paint to set it aside” says Nelson. “I would do great hooks on the wall and a floating shelf — even if it’s narrow, you have a place to leave your keys and collect the mail.”

As Hanley goes, so go the Red Sox Hanley Ramirez has been the key to the Red Sox’ lineup this season. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
Who is the most important player for the Red Sox in the postseason, which kicks off Thursday (8 p.m., TBS)? It may not be who you think. David Ortiz? Nope. Mookie Betts? Nope. David Price? Nope. Craig Kimbrel? Nope. It’s Hanley Ramirez. The Red Sox need Ramirez more than any other player on their roster to come up big. If the Sox stick with the batting order they showed the final weekend of the season, Ramirez will bat behind Ortiz — and if he can hit, he will force teams to pitch to Ortiz. If teams decide to pitch around Ortiz, the Boston first baseman can make them pay. Overall this season, Ramirez hit .286 with 30 home runs and 111 RBI, which were a career-high. The most RBI he had before this year came in 2009 when he had 106 as a 25-year-old with the Marlins. Ramirez is coming off his best month of the season as he batted .307 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI in September/

October. His 11 home runs in that stretch were more than he had in April, May and June combined. He also had a slugging percentage of .653 and an OPS of 1.045.
VS. U.S. NATIONAL UNDER-18
This season has been a big difference from the Ramirez of last year when he struggled in left field and battled a shoulder injury for most of the year. “On his part, the un-

derstanding and maybe the recognition that he needed to be more approachable, a little bit more engaging as a person,” manager John Farrell said recently. “And you know what, to his credit, he’s doing all that.” The Red Sox had the best offense in all of baseball this year as they finished with 878 runs. The 878 runs were
100 more than any other American League team with the next closest AL team evidently being the Indians, who the Sox will face in the ALDS. Postseason baseball is generally all about pitching, but with how dominant the Red Sox offense was this season, it has the chance to carry the team deep into October. The Red Sox have done well against all three of
the projected Cleveland starters, which certainly bodes well for the Red Sox. While Ortiz, Betts and everyone else in the lineup is important, Ramirez is the most important given his spot in the order and who comes up in front of him. The Red Sox may only go as far as Ramirez can take them.

Broncos (4-0)
Steelers (3-1)
Seahawks (3-1)
Falcons (3-1)
Bengals (2-2)
Neither inclement weather nor losing Trevor Siemian nor games on the East Coast can stop the Broncos’ march through opponents. This outstanding defense and secondary are about to face their toughest test yet next week when Matt Ryan and Julio Jones arrive in Denver.
Call it a hunch, but something tells me the Steelers weren’t too happy about their performance against Philadelphia in Week 3. In their quest to no longer be on the losing end of the largest margin of victory this NFL season, the Steelers kept raining bombs and running a fresh Le’Veon Bell out on the field well into the fourth quarter.
Russell Wilson is clearly banged up, but he and Doug Baldwin didn’t let it affect the passing game against New York. The Seahawks’ bye week probably couldn’t come at a better time. The early season rust is off, the demons are settled, and Jimmy Graham just showed his first signs of being a productive player in Seattle. Now just let Russell rest up.
The win over the Panthers was this team announcing that yes, they are for real. While it will probably take a little more time to forget the memory of last season’s collapse, there’s not much better to blot it out than with 500-yard passing games and 300-yard receiving days. Huge test facing the Broncos in Denver this week, though.
The Bengals bounced back nicely from a couple losses with a dominating performance against the Dolphins at home. They went to A.J. Green early and often and, for much of the game, he had more yards than the entire Dolphins team. That’s the recipe for success in Cincinnati: A.J. Green and defense.

Best of the rest
Vikings (4-0)
Eagles (3-0)
Patriots (3-1)
Packers (2-1)
Texans (3-1)
The Vikings defense did everything the team needed for a win once again. Recovering a muffed punt, giving their offense short fields to work with, and covering Odell Beckham Jr. better than a vengeful field goal warmup net. If the running game that showed up Monday night is here to stay, the Vikings are a serious contender.
The Eagles return to the road next week to take on Detroit after an early, Week 4 bye. Carson Wentz should get his first real chance to throw to Zach Ertz this week, as if the rookie didn’t look good enough already. With the NFC East sitting at a pretty surprising 10-5, the Eagles need to keep winning.
The Patriots’ descent down this list won’t last for too long. After a week of temptation to run Julian Edelman out at quarterback, the toughest decision in New England now is whether to be more excited about seeing Tom Brady return or the Cleveland Browns taking the field in this Sunday’s game.
The Packers get a second chance to measure themselves against the Vikings when the Giants visit Lambeau next weekend. A full complement of weapons for Aaron Rodgers and solid defense make them heavy favorites. Coming off a bye, Green Bay has to stop taking its foot off the gas like it did against Detroit.
What’s left to say about rookie first-round pick Will Fuller? All he did was have another great receiving day, capped off with a punt return for the game-winning score. Fuller is looking like the steal of the first round right now as the Texans run away with the AFC South. Let Bill O’Brien keep calling the plays in Houston.
