3 things you need to know OBAMA: GOVERNMENT PREPARED TO RESPOND TO HURRICANE MATTHEW
1
President Barack Obama on Wednesday said the U.S. government has teams and supplies positioned to respond to Hurricane Matthew as the storm barrels toward Florida and other southeastern states. “I want to emphasize to the public - this is a serious storm,” Obama said after a briefing at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “It has been building strength on its way to Florida.” He urged Americans to comply with any evacuation orders. MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT OF CLASSIFIED GOVERNMENT MATERIAL
2
The U.S. Justice Department charged a Maryland man with theft of classified government material, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Wednesday. The Justice Department identified the man as Harold Thomas Martin, 51, and said he worked as a government contractor. The New York Times said he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, the same consulting firm that employed Edward Snowden when he revealed the collection of metadata by the National Security Agency. Six documents investigators found in Martin’s possession allegedly contained sensitive intelligence and were produced by a U.S. government agency in 2014. “These six documents were produced through sensitive government sources, methods, and capabilities, which are critical to a wide variety of national security issues,” the complaint said. Martin had a top secret national security clearance and the ability to access U.S. government property that was not permitted to leave its authorized location, according to the criminal complaint.

Retired Marine recovers after double arm transplant John Peck lost all four limbs during combat in Afghanistan in 2010. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us
Retired Marine Sgt. John Peck had this to say about his new arms: “I loved them the minute I looked at them.” After losing all four limbs as the result of an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan six years ago, Peck, 31, is recovering from a double arm transplant performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Peck spoke Wednesday at a news conference at Brigham and Women’s Hospital alongside the staff who helped make his new reality possible. “My dream job since I was 12 was to be a chef and because of my donor’s gift, I actually have a fighting chance,” Peck sad. “As a result of this surgery, I’ll be able to pursue my dreams, but what means more to me than all that is that one day very soon, I’ll be able to hold [my fiancee] Jessica’s hand and actually feel it. And that is a truly precious gift.” In August, Dr. Simon Talbot, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Brigham and Women’s and the director of the hospital’s Upper Extremity Transplant Program, led a team through a nearly 14-hour surgery to

give Peck his new arms. This is the fourth bilateral arm transplant performed at Brigham and Women’s, he said. “Having the opportunity to care for a patient who’s given so much in service to our country was especially so meaningful to the team,” Talbot said. It was a long road to get to this point. Peck completed his evaluation to receive the transplants in August of 2014 after losing his limbs in 2010. Two months ago, Peck got the call that the transplant would finally take place.
“I was crying because I was happy, but then my mind switched and it became [about how] that means somebody died,” Peck said in a video produced by the hospital. An empty chair sat next to Peck during the press conference Wednesday as a way to honor his donor and all those who have been lost in combat. “My deepest condolences to my donor’s family. I’m not even going to try to know what you’re going through at this time,” Peck said, fighting back tears. “But I will tell you this: Your loved one’s death will not be for noth-
ing. Every day that I look down at our new arms, I will drive through the pain and I will never give up. I will remember his selflessness and gift until the day I die.” Gaining back function and sensation in his arms will be a painful journey, doctors said. Peck described the pain as “tremendous” as first. He remembered a night in the ICU when the anaesthesia began to wear off. “I wanted to call Dr. Talbott and tell him to come re-amputate my arms,” Peck said. “It was a moment of weakness, and I’ve overcome it. Everyday it’s a learning experience and I love it.” Peck is currently undergoing outpatient therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. It will take months for him to be able to use his hands fully and to feel Jessica Paker’s hand upon his. But Talbott noted that Peck is making progress, hitting milestones and working hard through his physical and occupational therapies. “He’s young and enthusiastic,” Dr. Talbott said. “He’s really motivated.”

Pence declared debate victor in Metro readers poll Metro readers apparently felt put-off by an aggressive Sen. Tim Kaine and overwhelmingly proclaimed Gov. Mike Pence the winner of the vice presidential debate in the Metro Readers Poll. In the unscientific poll, 95.3 percent of the readers who participated said the Republican Indiana governor prevailed in Tuesday night’s debate. Only 4.2 percent deemed the senator, a Virginia Democrat, the winner. A half of one percent declared the debate a tie.
Inexplicably, five times as many people voted in Metro’s online poll about the vice presidential debate as those who voted after last week’s Clinton-Trump debate (In that unscientific poll, 63.6 of those who participated picked Trump as the debate winner). Of those who included comments with their online vote in the poll on the vice presidential debate, several criticized Kaine’s style. “Tim Kaine was a real pit bull,” wrote one voter

The first presidential debate gave Democrat Hillary Clinton a boost in national polls. A CBS News Poll following the debate showed that 45 percent of likely voters who participated favored Clinton and 41 percent supported Republican Donald Trump. GARY KANE

BRIEFS Officials will soon unveil Boston’s largest playground slide Kids in Roslindale are on the verge of securing some very cool bragging rights for their neighborhood playground — the longest slide in the city of Boston. The project, part of renovations at Fallon Field, will offer a large climbing structure with a “sky cabin” on top and a 25-
foot slide, city officials revealed last year. An update on the project’s website said that officials are hopeful the park could open as early as this month, after some delays in equipment shipments postponed an earlier launch date. “The climbing structure and slide are huge, and the slope between the two tiers of the playground is shaping up to
be a tremendous play asset,” a statement on the Roslindale Playgrounds site read. “We are looking forward to seeing even more of the playground’s details reach completion.” The renovations also include a new water spray area, Universal Hub reported. The project’s budget is about $650,000, the Roslindale Transcript reported last year. CHRIS CAESAR

Faces of Northeastern photo project explores campus community The photo project lets the school feature “all the great people who make up the Northeastern community. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us
Northeastern students have probably seen Natayan Jean around campus many times. He’s worked as a building superintendent for 39 years, helping to keep the campus clean. Now, thanks to the Faces of Northeastern photo project, students aren’t only passing Jean in the school’s buildings, but also seeing his face on a banner outside the athletic facility where he most often works. Faces of Northeastern is a man-onthe-street style series started by photography manager Matthew Modoono and senior writer Joe O’Connell within Northeastern’s external affairs office. Most people are familiar with the style, which harks back to Humans of New York, but by focusing on campus, the photos serve to bring the Northeastern community — students, staff and faculty — together in a creative way. “We started last summer and it was just an idea the two of us came
up with as a way to feature all the great people who make up the Northeastern community,â€? O’Connell said. “We have an opportunity to talk to so many people from so many different walks of life.â€? When they first started the series and the two would walk around campus to randomly approach people, they would have to explain the point of the project every time. Recently, though, students have learned about Faces of Northeastern and recognize what O’Connell and Modoono are doing. When the university posts the photos and quotes on its Facebook page, comments thank Northeastern for doing this project. The posts have made alumni nostalgic for the Northeastern campus. “These people trust us — they let us get their pictures and their quotes,â€? Modoono said. “And it’s fun to walk around campus and hear [students] say they’ve already heard of [Faces of Northeastern] and seen it. ‌ People are emailing us now asking to be a part of it.â€? And, of course, there’s the perk of possibly being featured on a campus banner if you’re part of the project. Students haven’t been shy, Modoono said — they ask if they can get put on a banner. But she argues that one shouldn’t come away from her film thinking there’s a single solution. “There’s not one thing that’s going to fix this. The only solution is if we all start to think differently.” DuVernay’s film
is timely, but it’s not partisan. Neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton come off well. The Donald is seen circa 1989, stirring up the public into a mob against the “Central Park Five,” the black and brown kids who were, it was later proved, falsely imprisoned for assault. Clinton, meanwhile,
is shown in the 1990s using the term “superpredators” to describe black youths. “You look at them and think, ‘Wow, one of them is going to be president,” DuVernay says. Right now, “13th” is devastatingly up-todate, and for a reason: DuVernay only finished the film nine days before its New York Film Festival premiere. That was partly because at least two police shootings happened after she locked picture. When she was able to include them, she initially broke down. “Then my mother said to me, ‘It’s never going to be updated. They’re never all going to be in it. You have to let that go,’” DuVernay recalls. “That was a rough one: to know that it will never be complete — or not be complete for any good time soon. Because there’s always someone else who’s not going to be in it.”

So you want to debate Donald Trump? WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY A new improv comedy show at Laugh Boston might have the answer. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
David Carl is a New Yorker — just like Donald Trump. He has a mop of blonde hair — just like Donald Trump. And he even has crowds of people gathering to cheer, laugh at and debate him on a nightly basis — pretty much just like Donald Trump. Perhaps that’s why the comedian decided to start playing Donald Trump, a role that he can’t seem to shake now that the election looms closer and the Republican candidate shows no signs of slowing down. Carl brings “Trump Takes on… Boston,” a part-improv, part-mock debate, to Laugh Boston opening Oct. 8 and running through Election Day. The show is a spin on the sketch series he’s
been performing in New York (“The Road to the White House”) and audience members have the opportunity to debate, prompt and sing along with Carl’s frighteningly accurate Trump. Parts of your New York show predicted what could happen at the first presidential debate. Now that it’s come and gone, how accurate do you think your predictions were? There’s a very specific way he interrupts that I think we got right — he keeps just saying, “Wrong, wrong,” and “What about the e-mails?” He’s not too hard to predict. [Hillary’s] much harder because she’s an actual intelligent person who likes to let people see that; she also likes to use the English language well. Are there any Trump tics that people might not notice that you have from playing him for so long?
He says, “By the way” a lot — sooo much. He says it in that incorrect way where he’s not relating two things and he’s just changing the subject completely. Maybe I’m paying attention to it more now, but I think news reporters have started saying it a lot more than they used to, too. It’s like the Trump virus, in the least harmful way. Just a theory. Do you think he’s rubbing off on you, too? The one word I can’t say anymore without cringing is “great.” He’s ruined the word “great” for me. As we’re getting down to crunch time, do you think Trump’s become a riskier character to play because it’s getting pretty real? I play a lot of characters, and he’s by far the most depressing I’ve ever researched. We’re all sort of in pain, but there’s something cathartic about the show, when you can laugh at it.
The research part isn’t [cathartic for me], but I’m used to doing it. Do you think Trump supporters will come to the show? It’s hard to tell, they’re incognito a lot of the time. We had a few come to the last one, and they’ll come up after and say, “I love the way you’re playing him.” There’s so much ground to cover with Trump as a character; how do you know what to focus in on? The trickiest thing with Trump is topping him. He’s so much crazier than any character anyone plays fictionally. In my mind, he’s this bored petulant grown child billionaire who needs something to get him off. What do the audience members expect to hear about? People like bringing up the TPP [Trans Pacific Partnership], I don’t know why. It’s sort of
If you go Trump Takes on ... Boston Oct. 8 to Nov. 8 Laugh Boston 425 Summer St. $25, laughboston.com
funny, but that’s the talking point that comes up every single show. And people like bringing up Putin, that’s fun. How are you handling Putin? [In character] We’re very good friends. We love going to the bathhouse together. That’s where we share secrets. He puts his forehead against mine and says, “I don’t love you, but I respect you.” Do you think once the election is over, you’ll keep doing the character? I would love if Nov. 8th is the last time I ever play this guy. But if we’re stuck with him and the
audience still needs some healing laughter, then maybe. Our goal is to give people a platform to release their frustrations and take them out on Trump. Has anyone ever gotten really mad at you? I had a campaign staffer from one of the other big Republican candidates randomly on a panel for a show I sat in on. I walked up as Trump and really dumped on her candidate. At first she thought it was funny, but then got riled up in character and put me in a headlock. Like, we were all pretending, but that was trippy. That’s the fun, cathartic part about this show — if someone can release whatever negative feelings they have, that’s healthy. I don’t think we should become numb to the crazy things happening, but I think it’s all right to laugh about it, and then take action. We don’t have to punish ourselves into feeling depressed constantly.

Charlie Puth knows how to drive the conversation. The 24-year-old Berklee grad doesn’t skip a beat when asked who he’d like to see sub in for Selena Gomez for their chart-topping single “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” “I’d love to perform it with Bette Midler,” he says. “I would make this whole jazz orchestral arrangement with her.” Oh, Bette? You mean your fellow co-mentor on this coming season of the “The Voice,” premiering Monday on NBC? “Yeah, that’s why I said her,” he coyly adds. Some might say Puth knows how to work the press, but likely that’s because he’s had such a heavy year of talking to them. This time, Puth is out on the road for the Don’t Talk Tour. He calls from Miami to discuss his big year, his foray onto the screen and what we can expect from his sophomore release. The Don’t Talk Tour is a few months after the
Nine Track Mind Tour — how are they different? The music is better. [Laughs] I think the overall show is just really strong. Nine Track was obviously amazing for me in its own way because it was my first time, but I figured out a lot more about what I needed on the road. Tony Royster [Jr.] is on drums with me, and he’s one of the best in the world. I wanted the best of the best behind me. I was really inspired by seeing Alicia Keys perform — I saw a small show of her’s and she gave me ideas for We Don’t Talk [Tour]. I wanted give it a soulful, churchlike vibe. Speaking of Alicia, you’re the mentor to her team on this season of “The Voice” — what was that experience like for you? I love arranging music and putting songs together and switching up keys so it was a natural environment for me. I actually forgot I was on TV. Selena is taking a bit of a break and wanted her time off, and that’s cool, but that song keeps popping up. I’ve done it with a few different people and [“Dancing with the Stars”] was another new refreshing spin. I think that’s why that song has lived on for so long. What’s going on with your next album? Are you already at work on it? Do you write on the road? I’m writing; I have a studio on the back of my bus. I get off stage and I go right to the studio to work on that next album. I have a good handle on it now. I’m working on a few songs that are potential singles — but, by the way, I never think of songs as singles, I just want them to be great. I saw you tweet out support to Kim Kardashian following what happened to her in Paris. Does that incident put the risks of being a
public figure yourself on your mind at all? It does; sometimes people feel like they have the right to be near someone because they see their personal life in virtual reality. They forget that they’re still people, not inanimate objects. Does it still psych you out that you’re now a celebrity? It’s kind of crazy. [Laughs] Weirdly enough, it pops up in my head when I’m just making music in my zone. I’ll be doing vocals and be like, “Jeez, outside the studio, I’m celebrity Charlie now.”

In a Los Angeles indie scene dominated by a deluge of similar-sounding garage/psych rock bands, Nick Waterhouse took a dierent path, creating a meticulously old school R&B sound that’s fantastically evocative. One special island It’s easy to see why Aruba is the Caribbean island visitors keep returning to, year after year. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
According to the Aruba Tourism Authority, half of all visitors who come to the island for a vacation will return — often multiple times. There must be a reason why Aruba is deemed to be the most revisited destination in the Caribbean. There are beautiful beaches and lots of sunshine, but that’s nothing unique. What makes Aruba, the self-described “one happy island,” so enticing?
Easy to get to know Colonized by the Dutch in 1636, Aruba is positioned in the southern Caribbean about 17 miles north of Venezuela. It is only 19.6 miles long and 6 miles at its widest point. Getting around is easy, with both public transit and taxis available. Turquoise waters beckon from white-
sand beaches, and most Arubans speak English and Spanish in addition to their native Papiamento and Dutch.
Tropical without the humidity Aruba’s got sunshine in abundance, and the temperature generally lazes between the mid-70s and the mid-80s. The island lies just outside the Atlantic’s main hurricane corridor and is typically hit less by tropical storms, though if you’re looking only for sunny days, know that fall is the rainy season. (Though it’s a great time to visit if you’re looking to avoid winter’s high prices.) Fall hotel deals include the beachfront Hyatt Regency Aruba’s Sunshine on Sale, which gives a fifth night free on

The Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort and Casino reopens this fall after a massive renovation, and offers a daily $50 resort credit as a welcome back (rates from $249. www3.hilton. com). Water-sports lovers, take note: Aruba boasts gusting trade winds, which lowers humidity through spring and summer, and helps create some of the best windsurfing conditions on the planet. No wonder that Women’s Freestyle Champion at

More beyond the beach No need to hit the hotel gym, just grab your gear for some hiking or biking through the beautiful Arikok National Park. Comprising almost 20 percent of the island, the park offers a glimpse of prehuman history in wonderful geological formations and includes

Aruba’s highest peaks, with breathtaking views over scrubland and desert, the coastline and sea. Unique cultural and historical sites include ancient indigenous drawings inside the Guadirikiri, Fontein and Huliba caves. Don’t miss the conchi, or natural pool.
The spirit of the island It’s the Caribbean, which means rum. Specifically Palmera Rum, the local brew, which you will possibly drink more of than you should, and you will want a party. Visitors this year are in luck: The first Aruba Fashion Week takes place Dec. 1-5 and will highlight Caribbean fashion during shows, talks, a trade fair and, of course, several parties. Ongoing festivities include the Bonbini Festival. Bonbini means “welcome” in Papiamento, the Creole language
spoken on Aruba. This weekly folk festival includes music and dancing in downtown Oranjestad, the capital city, in the outdoor courtyard of Fort Zoutman, Aruba’s oldest building (every Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 p.m.). The Carubbian Festival takes place in the San Nicolas district and includes an Aruban feast, an outdoor market and entertainers. The main street becomes a pedestrian-only mall filled with colorful booths selling food, handicrafts and souvenirs. Look for locally produced goods and support Aruba’s artists, crafters and the island’s economy (every Thursday, 6-10 p.m.; packages including transportation are sold at most hotels). The biggest party of the year is the Grand Parade (Feb. 26, 2017), which is part of the monthlong winter carnival in February. The procession of impressive floats, glittering costumes and dancing winds its way around Oranjestad beginning at noon through late into the night. Hoist a Palmera Rum or two and join in. Bucket list festivals Mardi Gras Every year before Lent, visitors flock to New Orleans’ French quarter to celebrate Mardi Gras, the final day of Carnival. Drinking starts early with breakfast Bloody Marys and continues into the wee hours of the night. Mardi Gras

Carnival More than two million people flood the streets
of Rio de Janeiro for Carnival. The four-day celebration is traditionally held before Lent and includes street parties, masquerades, and samba parades. Follow Carnival bands across the beaches and streets, grab a drink at one of the city’s lively bars, and watch as samba schools compete for the best float.
Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta More than 600 colorful balloons fill the Southwest sky at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. Spectators gather at sunrise to watch the balloons take off and visit landing sites to track incoming balloons. The fiesta is also a competition, as balloonists drop markers on targets and participate in speed and distance races.
La Tomatina Goggles are recommended at La Tomatina, one of the world’s biggest food fights. Taking place annually on the last Wednesday of August in Bunol, Spain, the fight begins with a firing of water cannons as thousands throw squashed tomatoes at one another. Due to the immense popularity of this event, the town began selling tickets — but the experience is well worth the 10 euro fee.
Lantern Festival Every year during Chinese New Year, visitors gather in the Taiwanese small town of Pingxi for its
Lantern Festival. More than 100,000 lanterns are launched into the night sky during the three-day celebration.
Carnival of Venice Masks and costumes are standard attire at Italy’s Carnival of Venice. Every mask has its own story and symbolizes a different Italian theater character. Visitors parade their finery at parties and masquerade dinners, or end the night at a lavish costume ball.
St. Patrick’s Day You might not find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow at Dublin’s Saint Patrick’s Day Festival, but you will find plenty of festivities. For three days in March the city turns entirely green as revelers enjoy street performances and music. Take a walking tour of the city or visit the Irish Craft Beer Village for a taste of local brews.
White Nights and Scarlet Sails Festival During the summer, the sun never sets in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the city’s White Nights and Scarlet Sails Festival celebrates this stunning phenomenon. The festival features performances by Russian musicians, singers and dancers, culminating in the Scarlet Sails celebration. Rose-hued skies are the backdrop for tall ships with scarlet sails, and crowds enjoy spectacular fireworks and a water show.

Sox ready to dominate in October yet again The Red Sox will play Game 1 of an ALDS against Cleveland tonight. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Red Sox simply own October. They might not have gotten into the MLB playoffs, or anywhere close for that matter, the past two years but since the turn of the Century — when they get into the dance, they go far. In 2003 they went to Game 7 of the ALCS, in 2004 they won the whole thing, in 2005 they lost in the ALDS, in 2007 they won the whole thing, in 2008 they went to Game 7 of the ALCS, in 2009 they lost in the ALDS and in 2013 they won the whole thing. That’s a pretty good track record. This year’s playoff field is wide open, so the Red Sox have as good a shot as anyone to get to

the World Series and win it. According to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, the Sox have the third best odds of winning it all this year at 6-1. Only the Cubs (7-4) and Rang-
ers (5-1) have better odds. The Sox’ opponent in the ALDS, the Cleveland Indians, have 14-1 odds to capture the Commissioner’s Trophy. Cleveland will begin
to attempt to buck those odds beginning Thursday in Game 1 (8 p.m., TBS) of an ALDS against the Sox. The Indians have settled on Trevor Bauer to start Game 1 as their starting
rotation is in shambles due to major injuries. Bauer has just a 12-8 record this season with a 4.26 ERA, and he’s been incredibly shaky lately as he has a 7.28 ERA over
his last five starts. The Red Sox do not have anywhere near the rotation issues the Tribe do, and they will start AL Cy Young favorite Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15 ERA) at Progressive Field on Thursday. Porcello hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a game since July 24, so he should be primed to shut down Cleveland’s lineup. The Indians can manufacture runs, though, as they finished second, behind the Red Sox, with 777 runs in the regular season. Cleveland, however, goes about scoring its runs in an entirely different fashion than the Sox as it relies on a National League style of play. The Indians led the AL in stolen bases this season with 125. The Indians’ Rajai Davis is one of the most lethal weapons in baseball on the base paths as he swiped 43 bags this season — easily the most in the AL.

FEAR THE BLUE JAYS IN THE MLB PLAYOFFS DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard
I told you. Don’t let the Toronto Blue Jays into the tournament. I said that with my baseball mind, not my heart. Rip open my chest, and you’ll find me rooting for the Red Sox to make Chicago Cubs fans cry in the World Series. My heart tells me that the Red Sox are ready to make another championship run, given their relentless offensive attack, and much-improved pitching staff — top to bottom — in the month of September. My mind tells me that the Blue Jays are the most dangerous team in Major League Baseball. And as long as they have a pulse, that won’t change. Toronto was on life support twice in the past week. But the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers couldn’t team up to end the Blue Jays’ season. Boston lost to Toronto in the final two games

of the regular season, while the wild card hopeful Tigers lost their final two regular-season games to the lowly Atlanta Braves. Then, the Baltimore Orioles had a chance to go into Rogers Centre and eliminate the Jays in Tuesday night’s AL wild card game. But Edwin Encarnacion’s walk-off home run in the 11th inning kept Toronto alive. And they’re not just alive. They’re the most dangerous team in the postseason. An injury scare to 21-yearold closer Roberto Osuna in Tuesday’s wild card game would have made Toronto a little less
dangerous, but all signs point to him being ready to go against the Texas Rangers in the ALDS. It will be a rematch of last year’s ALDS, but that doesn’t mean the result will be any different. Toronto won last year’s dramatic series in five games. This year, the Jays could end it in four, which would take them back to the ALCS for the second straight year, where the eventual World Series champion Kansas City Royals eliminated them in 2015. I have the Red Sox defeating the Cleveland Indians in four games in their ALDS series, but
MEDICAL RESEARCH
even if I’m wrong, I expect the Blue Jays to advance to the World Series, where they’ll be the ones to make Cubs fans cry. You see, Toronto’s scary offense gets most of the attention. And rightfully so. Its 2-through-7 hitters each have 20-plus home runs in 2016. The Blue Jays can downright mash, and because of that, they’re never out of a game. But what gets overlooked is the fact that they can pitch with the best of them. J.A. Happ is a 20-game winner, and Aaron Sanchez finished the regular season with the best ERA in the American League at

3.00. Don’t forget about Marcus Stroman, who has all the stuff to be a top-of-the-rotation guy for a long time. And then there’s veteran lefty Francisco Liriano, who Toronto acquired at the trade deadline. Liriano had a 2.03 ERA in six starts in the month of September, and last got a taste of the postseason in 2013 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, going 1-0 with a 2.07 ERA in two starts. Point is, don’t sleep on Toronto’s pitching. Not against Texas. Not against either Boston or Cleveland. And not even against Chicago, or any other
National League team that they might face in the World Series. The worst part about it all is, it didn’t have to come to this. The Red Sox could have eliminated them. The Tigers could have eliminated them. The Orioles could have eliminated them. Instead, here’s Toronto, playing in front of a raucous crowd, mashing home runs, pitching just as good if not better than everyone else, while being a team that experienced a serious postseason run last year. The Blue Jays are in. They’re alive. And they’re the most dangerous team in the postseason.
