3 things you need to know OBAMA: GOVERNMENT PREPARED TO RESPOND TO HURRICANE MATTHEW
1
President Barack Obama on Wednesday said the U.S. government has teams and supplies positioned to respond to Hurricane Matthew as the storm barrels toward Florida and other southeastern states. “I want to emphasize to the public - this is a serious storm,” Obama said after a briefing at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “It has been building strength on its way to Florida.” He urged Americans to comply with any evacuation orders. MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT OF CLASSIFIED GOVERNMENT MATERIAL
2
The U.S. Justice Department charged a Maryland man with theft of classified government material, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Wednesday. The Justice Department identified the man as Harold Thomas Martin, 51, and said he worked as a government contractor. The New York Times said he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, the same consulting firm that employed Edward Snowden when he revealed the collection of metadata by the National Security Agency. Six documents investigators found in Martin’s possession allegedly contained sensitive intelligence and were produced by a U.S. government agency in 2014. “These six documents were produced through sensitive government sources, methods, and capabilities, which are critical to a wide variety of national security issues,” the complaint said. Martin had a top secret national security clearance and the ability to access U.S. government property that was not permitted to leave its authorized location, according to the criminal complaint.

Philly never seems to run out of political corruption stories. But a gay state representative and rising political star recently in the news for receiving $53,000 in speaking fees since his election denies that he is one of them. Democratic state Rep. Brian Sims, elected in 2012, bristled at any implications of wrongdoing after City & State PA reported this week that he improperly reported travel reimbursements and wrongly accepted payments (in political parlance, an “honorarium”) for speeches. “No entity that has brought me in for a lecture has ever sought any vote or favor from my office,” Sims said via email.
“If you actually take a minute to look at my speaking engagements over the last four years, you’ll see that they have focused on institutions of higher learning both in Pennsylvania and across the country. It is nothing short of ridiculous to think that the students of these institutions are somehow ‘buying access’ to me or the Pennsylvania legislature.” Sims said he delivered speeches based on his experience coming out as a gay football player at Downingtown High School and going on to be a captain of the team at Bloomsburg University, his activism for LGBT causes and experience as a civil rights lawyer. City & State asserted that “state lawmakers are banned from collecting speaking fees or other honoraria,” which is indeed written in the state Ethics Act. But there are exceptions, said Pennsylvania Ethics Commission executive director Rob Caruso. “A public official or public employee could accept an honorarium if the
payment was for or the request to appear is in relation to the public official or employee’s occupation or profession and not related to their elected or public office,” Caruso said. “It’s not specifically in the law,” he added. “Most of this is on a case-by-case basis. They’ve issued advisory rulings and it is mentioned in some of the Commission’s rulings.” Caruso could neither confirm nor deny whether the Commission is reviewing Sims’ records as a result of City & State’s investigation. Sims’ campaign said he double-checked with party lawyers that he was allowed to be paid for delivering talks. “In an abundance of ethical caution, Rep. Sims secured approval from the Counsel of the House Democratic Caucus before continuing his speaking engagements,” his campaign said in a statement. As far as Sims’ trips to Israel and Africa in 2015, with some campaign funds used to pay back gifts covering travel costs? His campaign as-
serted that “all of Rep. Sims’ activities are fully compliant with the law, whether relating to his charitable work or his advocacy work.” Sims’ campaign did acknowledge that, as City & State revealed, he failed to report the gift of airfare and a hotel room when Microsoft invited him to address the company in Washington in 2015, but said that was a mistake they are now correcting. “It is a shame that a clerical oversight is being spun to insinuate malicious intent where clearly none exists,” the campaign said. “This inquiry is simply another ‘click-bait’ attempt to smear a legislator who has the standing to use his experience to bring attention to national issues.” Gov. Tom Wolf signed an executive order banning executive branch employees from accepting gifts shortly after taking office, and has proposed a similar ban for all statewide officials. But as of yet there is no legislation in Harrisburg to make that proposal a reality.

BRIEFS Pence declared debate victor in Metro readers poll Metro readers apparently felt put-off by an aggressive Sen. Tim Kaine and overwhelmingly proclaimed Gov. Mike Pence the winner of the vice presidential debate in the Metro Readers Poll. In the unscientific poll, 95.3 percent of the readers who participated said the Republican Indiana governor prevailed in Tuesday night’s debate. Only
4.2 percent deemed the senator, a Virginia Democrat, the winner. A half of one percent declared the debate a tie. Inexplicably, five times as many people voted in Metro’s online poll about the vice presidential debate as those who voted after last week’s Clinton-Trump debate (In that unscientific poll, 63.6 of those who participated picked Trump as the debate winner). Of those who included com-
ments with their online vote in the poll on the vice presidential debate, several criticized Kaine’s style. “Tim Kaine was a real pitbull,” wrote one voter identified as Karona. “He was obnoxious and difficult to listen to.” A voter who identified herself as Mary wrote: “I was extremely impressed by Mike Pence’s performance, his knowledge of the issues, his composure under constant inter-
rupting by his opponent and his demeanor.” The impact of the vice presidential debate as reflected by scientific polling might not be available for days. The first presidential debate gave Democrat Hillary Clinton a boost in national polls. A CBS News Poll following the debate showed that 45 percent of likely voters who participated favored Clinton and 41 percent supported Republican Donald Trump. GARY KANE

Last year, more than 14,000 callers to the Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline seeking shelter were denied due to a lack of room at the city’s two 100-bed safe havens. In an effort to better address domestic violence, Mayor Jim Kenney announced a new post at City Hall. The director of domestic violence strategies will improve the coordination and reach of services and work to reduce the number of instances of domestic violence in the city, Women Against Abuse announced Tuesday in a news release. Women Against Abuse’s Director of Education Azucena Ugarte will leave her position at the nonprofit to fill the new role, which starts on Oct. 17. “I want Philadelphia to become a national model in responding
to domestic violence,” Kenney said. “Too many victims suffer in silence because they are embarrassed or for fear of even greater mistreatment.” The Philadelphia Police Department receives more than 10,000 emergency calls each year for domestic violence or other domestic issues. And the Domestic Violence Hotline received more than 14,000 calls last year for assistance. That was a 50 percent increase over the prior year, according to Women Against Abuse. And while homicides through domestic violence declined in 2013, the number increased again, with 19 in 2015. “For too long, domestic violence, a fundamental component of public health and safety, has been inadequately addressed without the coordination of a city authority,” Women Against Abuse Executive Director and President Jeannine Lisitski said. “We are honored that the city has chosen a longtime member of the Women Against Abuse team for this new role, and look forward to continuing to work together to enhance the safety of Philadelphians like never before.”

NJ delays vote on 23-cent gas hike The tax measure needs only 22 votes to pass the Senate in Friday’s vote. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev
alexis.sachdev@metro.us
New Jersey lawmakers have delayed a vote on a gas tax hike that would increase pump prices by 23 cents per gallon that Gov. Chris Christie announced last week. The vote, which was expected Wednesday, will now take place Friday, Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester) told CBS New York. If approved, New Jersey, where the current 14.5cent gas tax is secondlowest in the country, would have the seventhhighest gas tax nationwide at 37.5 cents. Sweeney needed 30 votes to put the bill up for vote in an emergency session Wednesday, but fell short with 28, according to The Observer. The gas tax vote will need only 22
votes to pass on Friday. Democrats hold a 24-16 majority. “Some people were convinced that a vote for the emergency, which has nothing to do with the vote on the Transportation Trust Fund, was a vote for the gas tax,” Sweeney said Wednesday. “So you saw the votes were here to pass it. It’s a delay of a day.” As of Wednesday, the average price for gas in New Jersey was $2 per gallon. For comparison, New York State’s average price at the pump was $2.43; the state has a 43-cent tax per gallon. Pennsylvanians pay an average $2.35 per gallon, including the state’s 51.4-cent tax per gallon. The deal will raise $2 billion annually for New Jersey — $16 billion over the eight years — to pay for road work, and the federal government will match that revenue, creating $32 billion to finance road work in the state. Christie had previously called for a shutdown of transit proj-

ects due to a lack of funding and an impasse with the state assembly over the tax hike. The proposed hike will renew the state Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) and boost annual spending on road, bridge and rail infrastructure by $400 million. It will also cut a number of other taxes, including the estate tax, which will be phased out by Jan. 1, 2018, and the state’s 7 percent sales tax, which will drop three-eighths of a percentage point. Still, the proposal has been met with fierce opposition statewide. More than 20,000 people have signed a pe-
tition to prevent the tax hike. The petition, hosted on the New Jersey Senate Republicans website, calls on legislators to find alternatives to fund the state’s transportation initiatives. AAA analysts said the tax will cost New Jersey drivers an additional $170 per year, CBS New York reported. “These drivers are already paying the highest tolls in the nation,” Sen. Jim Holzapfel (R-Ocean) said in a news release. “We will not stand silently by and watch as the legislature approves a 23-cent gas tax hike that will impose severe financial hardships on the people we were elected to serve.”
Fairmount residents had a rude awakening Wednesday morning as shards of glass littered the streets where dozens of car windows had been smashed. Police cruisers rolled down Parrish Street just south of Girard College Wednesday morning, where officers reported 26 cars with busted windows across several blocks and some estimated as many as 50 cars had been damaged. The motive was unknown, as nothing was reported stolen from any of the vehicles. “There has been a rash of cars being broken into, but this feels different, more haphazard,” said resident Greg Vincent, while surveying the scene from his front porch on Wednesday morning.
He said in eight years in the neighborhood he hasn’t seen anything like this. But an older resident recalled a tire-slashing spree on the block 15 years ago. Police said officers on patrol discovered the vandalism just before 5 a.m. near 18th and Poplar streets, and continued to find more and more damaged cars, including on Parrish Street between 22nd and 25th streets and lower on 25th Street toward Fairmount Avenue. Passersby at the scene of the vandalism said they believed police might already have a suspect in custody, but no details on an arrest or criminal charges were reported by police Wednesday morning. Investigators pulling data from recorder of crashed NJ train A second event recorder found in the rear of the train was not working. Investigators said on Wednesday they were collecting information from data and video recorders removed from the front car of the New Jersey Transit train that crashed into Hoboken Terminal last week. The National Transportation Safety Board said in a post on Twitter that its engineers would be able to characterize the content of the recorders in a few days. The data recorder,
akin to the black box aboard commercial airplanes, keeps track of various metrics while the train is in motion, including speed, acceleration and braking. Investigators at the crash site inside the terminal removed the recorders from the wreckage on Tuesday. Concerns about the structural integrity of the station, which was badly damaged in the accident and has a partially collapsed roof, delayed access to the lead car. Data from the recorder could help investigators determine what caused the Sept. 29 morning rush-hour crash that left one per-

the train was traveling at normal speed as it approached the station but that he has no memory of the crash. Passengers on the train and witnesses at the station have said the train did not appear to slow down as it arrived. REUTERS

Mourners dressed as colorful comic book characters gathered to remember a 6-year-old boy during a superhero-themed funeral on Wednesday, a week after the child was fatally shot at his South Carolina elementary school. Jacob Hall suffered a gunshot wound to the leg last week and died at a hospital on Saturday after blood loss led to major brain injury. A 14-year-old boy has been charged with the crime at Townville Elementary School in Townville, South Carolina. Police said he crashed a pickup truck through a fence and opened fire. “In 30 years of ministry, this is the most difficult thing that I have ever experienced with a family, a church, a community, said Tim Marcengill, associate pastor of Oakdale Baptist Church in Townville, where Hall’s service was held, the Independent Mail reported.
About 1,500 people gathered for Hall’s funeral, including South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, local media reported. Many of the adults and children who attended wore Batman or Superman costumes to honor Hall, who enjoyed pretending to be a superhero and “imagined himself being the good guy, Reverend David Blizzard said in his eulogy, NBC-affiliate WYFF News reported. Hall’s casket was adorned with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stickers and figurines of Captain America, local media reported. A teacher and two other students also were injured in the schoolyard shooting. Police said the teenaged suspect first shot and killed his father, Jeffrey Osborne, 47, as the man watched television at their home about two miles away. REUTERS

Replacement Samsung Note 7 phone emits smoke on US plane A replacement model of the fire-prone Samsung Note 7 smartphone began smoking inside a U.S. plane on Wednesday, the family which owns it said, prompting fresh investigations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration. A problem with the replacement for the Note 7 model would create a new, embarrassing and potentially costly chapter to a global scandal which has hurt Samsung’s reputation. It also could add new dangers for consumers. Indiana passenger Brian Green’s phone began emitting smoke inside a Southwest Airlines Co flight to Baltimore from Louisville,
Kentucky, his wife Sarah told Reuters after speaking with her husband. She said that Green had replaced the original phone about two weeks ago after getting a text message from Samsung. Samsung Electronics Co said in a statement it was working to recover the device and to understand the cause. “Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7, the South Korean company said. Southwest said the plane was evacuated after a customer reported smoke from a Samsung
device. The world’s largest smartphone maker announced a global recall of at least 2.5 million of its flagship Note 7 smartphones in 10 markets last month due to faulty batteries causing some phones to catch fire. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is in touch with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Samsung and the phone’s owner to gather facts, Chairman Elliot Kaye said in a statement, reminding consumers that they could get refunds for the troubled model. Russia suspends nuclear agreement, ends uranium research pact with US

Russia said on Wednesday it was suspending its nuclear and energy research agreement with the United States as a countermeasure against Washington for imposing sanctions on Russia over Ukraine. On Monday, President

Vladimir Putin suspended a treaty with Washington on cleaning up weaponsgrade plutonium, signaling he is willing to use nuclear disarmament as a new bargaining chip in disputes with the United States over Ukraine and Syria. “The regular renewal of sanctions against Russia, which include the suspension of RussianAmerican cooperation in the field of nuclear energy,
demands the adoption of countermeasures against the U.S. side,” the Russian government said on its website. The agreement on cooperation in nuclear- and energy-related scientific research, signed in 2013, provided the legal framework necessary to expand work between U.S. and Russian nuclear research laboratories and institutes in nuclear technology and nonproliferation, among others. The uranium agreement, signed in 2010, provided for feasibility studies into the conversion of six Russian research reactors from dangerous highly enriched uranium to more secure low enriched uranium. The test, which concluded with the rocket’s landing and the capsule parachuting safely to the desert floor, was an important step forward for Kent, Washingtonbased Blue Origin by showing the passenger capsule can escape from the rocket should something go wrong during launch. A rocket owned by Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin blasted off from Texas on Wednesday and then landed itself intact, even though engineers had expected it to crash after an important demonstration of how its unmanned crew capsule could fly away from the rocket in an emergency.
Saving the capsule was the only goal of the test and the survival of the Blue Shepherd rocket, which was making its fifth flight, was a bonus for Blue Origin. Engineers had expected searing exhaust from the capsule’s motor would tip over the rocket, causing it to shut down and crash in a fireball in the desert. The New Shepard booster rocket lifted off at 11:37 a.m. Eastern from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site, a live webcast showed. About 45 seconds later, the capsule separated from the rocket while a solid-rocket motor at the base of the capsule ignited. The 1.8-second firing steered the capsule away from the booster to test an emergency escape system. After the capsule separated, the booster continued up into space. Then it flew back, tail-first, toward

Earth. As it neared the ground, the booster’s rocket motor fired, its landing legs deployed and it touched down, two miles from the launch site, as it has done on its four previous flights. “That’s one hell of a booster, Bezos, the billionaire founder of retail giant Amazon, said on Twitter. Bezos has said by 2018 Blue Origin could start carrying paying passengers to more than 62 miles above Earth, high enough to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and see the planet against the blackness of space. Federal appeals court hears arguments over Dakota Access pipeline Three federal appeals judges in Washington, D.C., heard arguments on Wednesday over whether to stop work on a crude oil pipeline in parts of North Dakota where the Standing Rock Sioux and other tribes say the project will desecrate sacred land. The judges are not expected to rule for months. In September, they ordered the group of firms building the pipeline, led by Energy Transfer Partners LP, to pause construction on the disputed section of the route while they consider the tribes’ request that the U.S. government withdraw permits for the project. Opponents of the 1,100 mile, $3.7 billion pipeline celebrated in September
when legal challenges and violent clashes between protesters and security guards prompted the administration of President Barack Obama to ask the company to stop work on the disputed land while the government revisited its previous decisions about the project. Celebrities including actor Susan Sarandon and Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein have also joined protests against the pipeline. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also deciding whether to grant an easement to build under a lake on the Missouri River. Energy Transfer Partners needs that final permission in order to complete the pipeline, which is currently due for delivery on Jan. 1, 2017, according

to court records. An attorney for the pipeline company said under questioning from the judges at Wednesday’s hearing that if the court allowed it, the company would continue building up to the lake’s edge even before the easement decision, because each extra month of delay will cost the company more than $80 million. Engaged is the new ‘Black’!
New details have emerged in the Kim Kardashian West robbery
Wedding bells are on the horizon for not one, but two, stars from Netflix’s smash hit “Orange is the New Black.” Samira Wiley, the dreamy babe that plays inmate Poussey, doesn’t have the same struggles in love as her character does on the show. She recently got engaged to Lauren Morelli, one of the show’s writers and producers. Wiley posted an adorable picture of herself and bae on Instagram with the sparkly ring that sealed the deal. “OITNB” might need to add a wedding planner to the roster this season, because Wiley isn’t the

Here are the updates: Kim Kardashian West wasn’t alone in the hotel, as many have assumed. Her friend and stylist Simone Harouche was also in the apartment, sleeping in a downstairs bedroom. When Harouche heard the commotion, she locked herself in a bathroom and contacted Kim’s bodyguard, Pascal
Duvier, for help. The concierge who let the men into Kardashian West’s unit was inside the apartment while the robbery was taking place, according to TMZ. Though he was handcuffed, the reality star told authorities he was extremely calm. She asked him, “Are we gonna die?” To which he responded, “I don’t
know,” reports the gossip site. The concierge is a key witness in the case. A source has told People magazine that Kim K blames herself for showing off the ring and that the incident has her questioning everything she does moving forward. Could this be the end of “KUWTK”?

Making a movie America must see “Selma” director Ava DuVernay wants her doc “13th” to make the country “think differently.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
“I cried a lot making this film,” Ava DuVernay says about “13th.” The director didn’t have much time between making “Selma,” her Oscar-nominated movie about Martin Luther King Jr., and the new doc, which traces the evolution of racism in America since the Civil War’s end up to, essentially, a few weeks ago. That meant DuVernay was watching 1,000 hours of violent, racist archival footage soon after directing recreations of black activists in 1964 being beaten and even killed. “I’m in a self-care moment right now,” she adds. “I’m not sure when I’ll do this again.” But “13th” was important enough for her to face the pain. Her film — which hits Netflix Instant Friday — covers a lot of ground. It traces
the rise of the prison system and how it targets African-Americans and destroys low-income neighborhoods. It shows the militarization of police. DuVernay even gets Newt Gingrich to admit that laws disproportionately punished crack possession over cocaine use were unfair. It’s tightly focused and merciless. And it’s perfect to watch before Election Day. “If you change how people think, then we have societal change,” DuVernay tells a room of journalists the day after its premiere. The filmmaker compares shedding light on such issues with the growing awareness of transgender rights. She admits, even two years ago, she knew little about their struggle. “I was in a vacuum. I knew about them; I was a forward-thinking person. I thought, ‘That’s cool, whatever you want to do.’ But that’s not enough. The idea that people are becoming aware of transgender issues affects how we allow legislation to go down, for and against them.” She sees “13th” as part

of a similar struggle. “If we can change minds, make them aware of what happens in prisons and police departments, there will be a cultural shift,” she says. But she argues that one shouldn’t come away from her film thinking there’s a single solution. “There’s not one t h i n g that’s going to fix this. The only solution is if we all start to think differently.” Right now, “13th” is devastatingly upto-date, and for a reason: DuVernay only finished the film nine days before
its New York Film Festival premiere. That was partly because at least two police shootings happened after she locked picture. When she was able to include them, she initially broke down. “Then my mother said to me, ‘It’s never going to be updated. They’re never all going to be in it. You have to let that go,’” DuVernay recalls. “That was a rough one: to know that it will never be complete — or not be complete for any good time soon. Because there’s always someone else who’s not going to be in it.”

One track mind Charlie Puth knows how to drive home a message. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
Charlie Puth knows how to drive the conversation. The 24-year-old doesn’t skip a beat when asked who he’d like to see sub in for Selena Gomez for their chart-topping single “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” “I’d love to perform it with Bette Midler,” he says. “I would make this whole jazz orchestral arrangement with her.” Oh, Bette? You mean your fellow co-mentor on this upcoming season of the “The Voice,” premiering Monday on NBC? “Yeah, that’s why I said her,” he coyly adds. Some might say Puth knows how to work the press, but likely that’s
they different? The music is better. [Laughs] I think the overall show is just really strong. Nine Track was obviously amazing for me in its own way because it was my first time, but I figured out a lot more about what I needed on the road. Tony Royster [Jr.] is on drums with me and he’s one of the best in the world. I wanted the best of the best behind me. I was really inspired by seeing Alicia Keys perform — I saw a small show of her’s and she gave me ideas for We Don’t Talk [Tour]. I wanted give it a soulful, churchlike vibe.
because he’s has such a heavy year of talking to them. Predating the January release of his debut studio album “Nine Track Mind,” Puth already had a mega hit with another pop starlet, Meghan Trainor, in “Marvin Gaye.” He received a Song of the Year Grammy nod with Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” (they lost out to Ed Sheehan’s “Thinking Out Loud”) and embarked on his headlining tour come spring. This time, Puth is out on the road again with the Don’t Talk Anymore Tour, accompanied by another YouTube wunderkind, Hailey Knox. He calls from Miami to discuss his big year, his foray onto the screen and what we can expect from his sophomore release.
Speaking of Alicia, you’re the mentor to her team on this season of “The Voice” — what was that experience like for you? I love arranging music and putting songs together and switching up keys so it was a natural

MUSIC environment for me. I actually forgot I was on TV. You were also on “Dancing with the Stars” to perform “We Don’t Talk Anymore” with Daya — does the song work for you with people other than Selena? Selena is taking a bit of a break and wanted her time off and that’s cool, but that song keeps popping up. I’ve done it with a few different people and [“DWTS”] was another new refreshing spin. I think that’s why that song has lived on for so long. What’s going on with your next album, are you already at work on it? Do you write on the road? I’m writing; I have a studio on the back of my bus. I get off stage and I go right to the studio to work on that next album. I have a good handle on it now. I’m working on a few songs that are potential singles — but, by the way, I never think of songs as singles, I just want them to be great.

I saw you tweet out support to Kim Kardashian following what happened to her in Paris. Does that incident put the risks of being a public figure yourself on your mind at all? It does; sometimes people feel like they have the right to be near someone because they see their personal life in virtual reality. They forget that they’re still people, not inanimate objects. Does it still psych you out that you’re now a celebrity? It’s kind of crazy. [Laughs] Weirdly enough it pops up in my head when I’m just making music in my zone. I’ll be doing vocals and be like, “Jeez, outside the studio, I’m celebrity Charlie now.”

Seventeen-year-old powerhouse Daya is behind girl power anthems “Sit Still, Look Pretty” and “Hide Away,” and provides the haunting vocals on the Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down.” The Pittsburgh native is already platinum and gold-certified and has a forthcoming full-length studio album (named for her single “Sit Still, Look Pretty”) due out Oct. 7 from Artbeatz. Weaving between contagious clean-cut pop and grooving synthsoundscapes with the lyrical wide-eyed, selfawareness of pre-Calvin, post-Harry Taylor Swift, the artist born Grace Martine Tandon just
might be the new voice Gen-Z is searching for. Fans who pre-order the album are getting access to the song “Cool” — can you tell us a little about the song? It’s one I’ve been performing live a lot recently, so some people might be already familiar with it. It’s a great lead-off to the album release because it’s a feel-good song, and I think it really showcases my voice and production. It’s about being in that kind of relationship where you feel so good in the moment, and you don’t want it to ever end. It’s also a love song, which could be the first some fans are hearing from you. I think it’s my first song that’s accepting of love. “Hide Away” and “Sit Still, Look Pretty” were both pushing [love] away, but it shows I went through so many

DesignPhiladelphia things wants you to go home to do WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY The 12th annual design festival starts on Oct. 6. MADELINE PRESLAND @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
With exhibits on tiny houses and workshops on interior design and public spaces, the DesignPhiladelphia celebrates its 12th year by encouraging participating designers to be inspired by or challenge the notion of homey comfort. The annual festival is dedicated to celebrating thoughtful design in Philadelphia. This year’s theme, home, asks designers, artists and other creators to host shows or workshops, or contribute to exhibits and displays that are inspired by their own definition of the theme. And the theme isn’t chosen at random. The people behind the scenes are inspired by current events that impact everyone — not just those in the design community.
“There is the sense that this is a time of political uncertainty — both nationally and with the new mayor,” said Center for Architecture and Design executive director Rebecca Johnson. “The committee felt this — and the desire to go home and have a sense of comfort.” The Center for Architecture and Design organizes and runs the annual festival. Events throughout the festival focus on highlighting Philly’s status as a design destination. Although defining home is up for interpretation, there are a few things that you might see throughout the festival. “Home is something that touches so many of the designers,” said Johnson. “What they do has a component in residential design: architecture, interior design, neighborhood design, etc.” For artists and designers, home can be seen as an abstract concept that inspires the events
that happen throughout DesignPhiladelphia’s run. Some artists and designers take the theme pretty literally. But it’s all up for your own interpretation. Here’s our list of events that you shouldn’t miss during the festival. The festival kicks off on Oct. 6 and ends Oct. 16. Many events are free and open to the public.
Plushie Party! Sunday, Oct. 9, 2-5 p.m. Philly AIDS Thrift 710 S. 5th St.

Chef Jeremy Nolen got his start in the restaurant industry at a young age, inspired by his father who was also a chef. At the age of 13, he began working with him on the weekends and fell in love with the world of professional cooking. By the time was finished high school, he had mastered the techniques that would be learned in culinary school and decided not to enroll. Since then, the 38-yearold chef has opened up his own restaurant, Whetstone Tavern and serves as the executive chef at Brauhaus Schmitz. Nolen dishes on where to get the best noodles in town and a date spot that’s great for bringing the whole family.
Best late-night meal? That’s a tough one as I don’t really go out late, but The Good King Tavern (614 S. 7th St.) serves their menu until 1 a.m. and the food is really good. You can get entrees late too.
Best meal under $10? Stargazy’s traditional beef & onion pie (1838 E. Passyunk Ave.). It’s such a good lunch and perfect for this time of year. It’s a traditional British pie with mashed potatoes and parsley sauce and it’s so good and comforting!
Best hidden foodie gem? I guess it’s not really hidden anymore with

their recent Bon Appetit nod but Barbacoa (1703 S. 11th St.) is great! I used to go to their food truck before the restaurant and the tacos are amazing!
Best place to dine alone? Cheu Noodle bar (255 S. 10th St.). You can sit at the counter and have a beer and some awesome noodles. It’s a great place to go alone and just chat with the cooks and bartenders.
Place you always take or recommend for out-of-towners? Zahav (237 St. James Pl.). It’s a really unique restaurant and the food is great. There aren’t many modern Israeli restaurants in the country so chances
are out-of-towners don’t have one in their city.
Go-to date spot, hands down? Ela (627 S. 3rd St.) is a great spot for a date. It’s in my neighborhood and has a great atmosphere. My wife and I even took our 8-year-old daughter with us one time and she loved it!
Best place to catch up with friends? Besides Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.)? That’s usually where my friends come to meet and catch up and it’s nice because we have large tables. Other than that, I would say Brigantessa (1520 E. Passyunk Ave.). The food is great and there is a bar you could sit at and chat.
Plus it’s on Passyunk Ave. so you can hit a bunch of other places as well.
Most Instagrammable restaurant? I try not to take many pictures while I’m out unless it’s for research or something like that but there are a few that I can think of. I haven’t been to some of them but I follow them on Instagram and their photos are great. Aldine (1901 Chestnut St.), Will (1911 E. Passyunk Ave.), Laurel (1617 E. Passyunk), and Vernick (2031 Walnut St.) to name a few. Chef Jeremy Nolen will be at the inaugural Brauhaus Schmitz Oktoberfest at 23rd Street Armory from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9. JENNIFER LOGUE

It’s not often that I walk all the way down to Arch Street, especially when it comes to a night of fine dining. However, with Philly’s ever-changing landscape, locals can now experience impeccable cuisine a few blocks north of Rittenhouse, with the opening of James at 1835 Arch. The new restaurant opened to the public on Sept. 21 and offers an exciting spin on American cuisine featuring comfort food favorites, wines on draft and more. Always in the mood for pasta, I decided to dive into their lobster ravioli which was much raved about by Chef Michael Suminski, who created the menu. First impressions are everything and this dish is an unforgettable feast for the eyes. The ravioli comes perfectly striped, thanks to black squid ink, providing a beautiful contrast against the beige of the pasta. On top of each lobster-filled ravioli is a tiny piece of shrimp and to the side, a tiny edible clam or “cockle.” At the center of this flowerlike display of seafood
This ravioli has style.
JENNIFER LOGUE
is a heart of braised greens in a pool of shrimp veloute, a sauce made from shrimp stock, butter and flour. While the lobster ravioli seems like a lot of food, it’s not overly satiating. The ravioli themselves aren’t stuffed to the max, but moderately portioned with lobster. The shrimp and cockles add an extra dose of protein to leave you feeling satisfied and the squid ink is barely noticeable in terms of taste. Finally, the braised greens are a juicy, flavorful finish thanks to the addition of the velvety shrimp veloute. If you love seafood, this is a dish to try as it celebrates many elements of the sea simultaneously, with the braised greens almost making me think of seaweed in terms of color and texture. The overall tone is flavorful but not at all spicy so if you’re a fan of more mild dishes, that’s an added bonus. What’s more, you’ll be the envy of Instagram foodies everywhere because it’s not every day you see ravioli this stylish.

One special island It’s easy to see why Aruba is the Caribbean island visitors keep returning to, year after year. LINDA LABAN @MetroPhilly
letters@metro.us
According to the Aruba Tourism Authority, half of all visitors who come to the island for a vacation will return — often multiple times. There must be a reason why Aruba is deemed to be the most revisited destination in the Caribbean. There are beautiful beaches and lots of sunshine, but that’s nothing unique. What makes Aruba, the self-described “one happy island,” so enticing?
from white sand beaches, and most Arubans speak English and Spanish in addition to their native Papiamento and Dutch.
Tropical without the humidity Aruba’s got sunshine in abundance, and the temperature generally lazes between the mid70s and the mid-80s. The island lies just outside the Atlantic’s main hurricane corridor and is typically hit less by tropical storms, though if you’re looking only for sunny days, know that fall is the rainy season. (Though it’s a great time to visit if you’re looking to avoid winter’s high prices.) Fall hotel deals include the beachfront Hyatt Regency Aruba’s Sunshine on Sale, which gives a fifth night free on a five-
night stay (through Dec. 18, rates from $259, aruba.regency.hyatt. com). The Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort and Casino reopens this fall after a massive renovation, and offers a daily $50 resort credit as a welcome back (rates from $249. www3.hilton. com). Water sports lovers, take note: Aruba boasts gusting trade winds, which lowers humidity through spring and summer, and helps create some of the best windsurfing conditions on the planet. No wonder that Women’s Freestyle Champion at

More beyond the beach
Colonized by the Dutch in 1636, Aruba is positioned in the southern Caribbean about 17 miles north of Venezuela. It is only 19.6 miles long and 6 miles at its widest point. Getting around is easy, with both public transit and taxis available. Turquoise waters beckon
No need to hit the hotel gym, just grab your gear for some hiking or biking through the beautiful Arikok National Park. Comprising almost 20 percent of the island, the park offers a glimpse of prehuman history in wonderful geological formations and includes

Aruba’s highest peaks, with breathtaking views over scrubland and desert, the coastline and sea. Unique cultural and historical sites include ancient indigenous drawings inside the Guadirikiri, Fontein and Huliba caves. Don’t miss the conchi, or natural pool.
The spirit of the island It’s the Caribbean, which means rum. Specifically Palmera Rum, the local brew, which you will possibly drink more of than you should, and you will want a party. Visitors this year are in luck: The first-ever Aruba Fashion Week takes place Dec. 1-5 and will highlight Caribbean fashion during shows, talks, a trade fair and, of course, several parties. Ongoing festivities include the Bonbini Festival. Bonbini means “welcome” in Papiamento, the Creole language
spoken on Aruba. This weekly folk festival includes music and dancing in downtown Oranjestad, the capital city, in the outdoor courtyard of Fort Zoutman, Aruba’s oldest building (every Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 p.m.). The Carubbian Festival takes place in the San Nicolas district and includes an Aruban feast, an outdoor market and entertainers. The main street becomes a pedestrian-only mall filled with colorful booths selling food, handicrafts and souvenirs. Look for locally produced goods and support Aruba’s artists, crafters and the island’s economy (every Thursday, 6-10 p.m.; packages including transportation are sold at most hotels). The biggest party of the year is the Grand Parade (Feb. 26, 2017), which is part of the monthlong winter carnival in February. The procession of impressive floats, glittering costumes and dancing winds its way around Oranjestad beginning at noon through late into the night. Hoist a Palmera Rum or two and join in. Festivals to add to your bucket list
Don’t miss these worldwide phenomena.
Some celebrations are so spectacular that they’ve grown from hometown events to festivals that draw visitors from all over the world. As you’re planning next year’s itinerary, check out our picks of festivals that offer a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience ranging from spiritual to lighthearted.
event, the town began selling tickets — but the experience is well worth the 10 euro fee.
Mardi Gras Every year before Lent, visitors flock to New Orleans’ French quarter to celebrate Mardi Gras, the final day of Carnival. Locals step out in full holiday attire—costumes, masks, and face paint—and parade float riders throw strings of plastic beads to the crowds. Drinking starts early with breakfast Bloody Marys and continues into the wee hours of the night.
Pingxi Lantern Festival Every year during Chinese New Year, visitors gather in the Taiwanese small town of Pingxi for its Lantern Festival. More than 100,000 lanterns are launched into the night sky during the three-day celebration. Visitors can take part by buying their own lanterns from street stalls. Festival activities also include food, colorful fireworks and sparklers.
White Nights and Scarlet Sails Festival During the summer months, the sun never sets in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the city’s White Nights and Scarlet Sails Festival celebrates this stunning phenomenon. The festival features

tion. Rose-hued skies are the backdrop for tall ships with scarlet sails, and crowds enjoy
spectacular fireworks and a water show.
Carnival More than 2 million people flood the streets of Rio de Janeiro for Carnival. The four-day celebration is traditionally held before Lent and includes street parties, masquerades, and samba parades. Follow Carnival bands across the beaches and streets, grab a drink at one of the city’s lively bars, and watch as samba schools compete for the best float.
Oktoberfest Get to a beer tent and grab a liter stein for Oktoberfest, one of the world’s most spirited parties. A keg tap marks the beginning of this boozy weeklong festival born in Munich, Germany, where millions of visitors flock to one of the city’s themed tents to enjoy a stein. In addition to beer, guests can sample traditional food like sausages, pretzels, and potato dumplings.
Dia de los Muertos In early November, friends and family in Mexico gather to pay their respects to the dead on Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, to commemorate lost loved ones with ancient traditions.
Dia de Los Muertos
The festivities are particularly spectacular in Oaxacam where families of the deceased build private altars using sugar skulls, leave flowers and food on graves, and put out offerings to welcome spirits. Celebrants eat foods shaped like bones, including chocolate skulls and pan de muerto, or bread of the dead.
Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta More than 600 colorful balloons fill the Southwest sky at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. Spectators gather at sunrise to watch the balloons take off and visit landing sites to track incoming balloons. The fiesta is also a competition, as balloonists drop markers on targets and participate in speed and distance races.
La Tomatina Goggles are recommended at La Tomatina, one of the world’s biggest food fights. Taking place annually on the last Wednesday of August in Bunol, Spain, the fight begins with a firing of water cannons as thousands throw squashed tomatoes at one another. Due to the immense popularity of this
Carnival of Venice Masks and costumes are standard attire at Italy’s Carnival of Venice. Every mask has its own story and symbolizes a different Italian theater character. Visitors parade their finery at parties and masquerade dinners, or end the night at a lavish costume ball.
Kumbh Mela Every three years, millions of visitors gather in Nashik to bathe in one of India’s sacred rivers for Kumbh Mela. The pilgrimage is considered to be the largest peaceful gathering in the world, and is held in different locations around India according to Hindu tradition. Visitors can participate in religious discussions, singing and assemblies, or complete altruistic acts alongside holy men and women.
St. Patrick’s Day You might not find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow at Dublin’s Saint Patrick’s Day Festival, but you will find plenty of festivities. For three days in March the city turns entirely green as revelers enjoy street performances and music. Take a walking tour of the city or visit the Irish Craft Beer Village for a taste of local brews.

Alec Asher A bit of a surprise, Asher came in and started just five games, but definitely left an impression while making a strong case for next season. He went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA while striking out 13 guys compared to just four free passes. His three quality starts, too, should serve well for him when vying for a spot in the spring.
KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us
In a season filled with few ups that were tucked away within more downs, the Phillies certainly had some bright spots. Which players saw their stock rise the most? On the flip side, who took the biggest hit?
Jeanmar Gomez
Cameron Rupp Talk about showing up at an opportune time. Rupp played over 100 games for the first time in his career, batting .252 with 54 RBIs and 16 RBIs. The 28-year-old could feel guys like Jorge Alfaro creeping up within the organization and went out and produced at a respectable clip. Will it be enough to keep him starting next season? Spring training will decide that, but right now, the ticker is pointing up for the Texas native.

Cesar Hernandez All he did was lead the team with a .294 average and put an end to any discussion that he should hit the bench in favor of J.P. Crawford. Hernandez batted well over .300 during the final two months, including a monster month of September that

Ryan Howard Huh? No, his stock in Philadelphia didn’t change, but his prospectus heading into free agency should improve. Any American League team in need of a designated hitter will take a look at the 36-year-old. He won’t ever be an average hitter, he may never eclipse .240 again, but his 25 home runs were more than he
had since 2011. His 59 RBIs weren’t where they normally be, but seeing his power swing come back has to help his cause for a one-year deal.

This was a complete 180. At the midway point, he was among the top closers in baseball with 24 saves. His numbers post-All Star break were dismal. He had an 8.33 ERA in 31 appearances, blowing four saves. He was only able to close out 13 games in the second half. Gomez looked as though he cemented himself as the closer for next season — that changed.
Tyler Goeddel
Sinkers
Perhaps not expected to do a whole lot this season, Goeddel didn’t do a whole lot in his first run with the club. He played well in the field, but didn’t prove anything with his bat, collecting a .192 average in 213 at-bats.

Reasons Sixers’ Embiid is more awesome than we thought
The Philly rookie made his NBA debut playing 12 minutes vs. the Celtics.
If you watched Embiid play away from the ball (it was hard not too, he is just enormous), he constantly was jockeying for position in the post. His first bucket was a turnaround shimmy jump shot — like those of Patrick Ewing or Hakeem Olajuwon in the past, and though he only played 12 minutes, he dominated the inside of the floor offensively and defensively.

If Joel Embiid can stay healthy, he will be an absolute star. If you didn’t watch his NBA debut in the Sixers preseason win over the Celtics Tuesday, here are four reasons you should go all in on the Sixers big man:
is 1Hegigantic
Embiid grew two inches while sitting on the bench, nursing his foot injury and missing two seasons of NBA games. He is listed as 7-foot, but he is much bigger than that. The center has the natural gifts to tower over most NBA big men with

to double-team, first game, second quarter?” Embiid said. “That kind of messed me up after that. But that’s something that I’m going to go back, watch film, learn from it and next game if it happens again I’ll be ready for it.” The double teams will only help Embiid become a great passer, and a true inside-out player.

Embiid admitted to being nervous during his brief but formative first step in the NBA. He scored six points on two made field goals and two made free throws. But according to the man himself, he expected more: “Honestly, I thought in 12 minutes I thought I could come out and score like, 40 points,” he said amid laughter from the Sixers media.

Coming into training camp, the Flyers had a position battle in front of them between Scott Laughton and Nick Cousins. That was silenced a bit as the two began working on the same line early on, but as the preseason has progressed, the two players remain in a competition. On Tuesday, head coach Dave Hakstol provided some insight on the trajectories each player has had thus far. It appears as though they’re two different trajectories. “I’ve been happy with Nick’s camp,” Hakstol said. “Nick did a good job up the middle. He’s an agitator, but he’s also a guy that can make plays and one that we need to make plays. He can produce some offense in that third line role.” In Laughton’s case, he started out well, but has cooled off recently after two lackluster games. “I was very happy with his first part of camp,” Hakstol said. “The last

James White hasn’t done much of anything out of the Patriots backfield in 2016, but that should change immediately with Tom Brady’s return from suspension. Brady knows how to use pass-catching backs, as he’s made fantasy assets out of Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead and Dion Lewis in recent years. White was terrific at the end of last season with Brady, with 28 catches and four total touchdowns over the Patriots final four games of the season. He has RB2 upside in any PPR format.
After exploding in the first two games of the season with 264 total yards and three touchdowns on 59 total touches, Jets running back Matt Forte has been awful. He’s posted a terrible 3.17 yards per carry in the last two weeks and has not found the end zone. During that same time, change-of-pace
NFL sleepers of the week Each week we will identify three players worth taking a shot on in deeper leagues. Kenneth Dixon, RB, Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens have released Justin Forsett, and while Terrance West will control the Baltimore backfield this week, Dixon should supplant him in the near future. Dontrelle Inman, WR, San Diego Chargers – He has led all San Diego receivers in snaps in each game this season, and he finally broke out with fantasy production in Week 4. Add him in 12-team leagues or larger. Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia Eagles – Could be on the waiver wire after being on bye last week. Has shown incredible poise so far, should continue to produce high-end QB2 numbers. back Bilal Powell has averaged a spectacular 7.0 yards per carry while adding 12 catches for 95 yards. Forte is getting up there in age, and this backfield could evolve into a full-on time share as early as this week. Add Powell in all formats, and if you own Forte, begin exploring trade options.
