3 things you need to know WATCHDOG CITES EX-AIDE TO DEFENSE SECRETARY FOR MISCONDUCT

1

A former top military aide to U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter used his government credit card to pay bills at night clubs, lied about it and behaved inappropriately with female subordinates, the Pentagon watchdog said on Thursday. In a written response to the watchdog’s report, former aide Army Major General Ron Lewis disagreed with its conclusions and disputed some of the facts, but said he was aware of “mistakes, errors in judgment and perceptions” he may have created. ASSAD OFFERS REBELS AMNESTY IF THEY SURRENDER ALEPPO

2

Rebels holed up in Aleppo can leave with their families if they lay down their arms, President Bashar al-Assad said on Thursday, vowing to press on with the assault on Syria’s largest city and recapture full control of the country. The offer of amnesty follows two weeks of the heaviest bombardment of the five-anda-half-year civil war, which has killed hundreds of people trapped inside Aleppo’s rebel-held eastern sector and torpedoed a U.S.backed peace initiative. Fighters have accepted similar government amnesty offers in other besieged areas in recent months, notably in Daraya, a suburb of Damascus that was under siege for years until rebels surrendered it in August. However, rebels said they had no plan to evacuate Aleppo, the last major urban area they control, and denounced the amnesty offer as a deception. “It’s impossible for the rebel groups to leave Aleppo because this would be a trick by the regime,” Zakaria Malahifji, a Turkey-based official for the Fastaqim group which is present in Aleppo, told Reuters. “Aleppo is not like other areas, it’s not possible for them to surrender.” REUTERS

US CHARGES SIX SOLDIERS WITH SELLING MILITARY EQUIPMENT OVERSEAS

Eight people, including six soldiers, have been charged with stealing more than $1 million worth of sensitive U.S. Army equipment and selling the gear on eBay to buyers in Russia, China and other countries, the Justice Department said on Thursday. The soldiers, based in Fort Campbell in Tennessee and Kentucky, were indicted with the two others by a federal grand jury and charged on Wednesday. The equipment included night vision helmet mounts, which were sold to eBay customers in Russia, China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Lithuania, Moldova, Malaysia, Romania and Mexico, the department said in a statement. Taxes, emails and VPs: Trump and Clinton prep for second debate The second debate is scheduled for 9 p.m. Sunday at Washington University in St. Louis. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

amanda.mikelberg@metro.us

As the second presidential debate nears the candidates are undoubtedly plotting their attacks based on the latest developments: the VP debate, revelations of Trump’s $916 million business losses and possible tax avoidance, new GOPers disavowing Trump and the claims of a new batch of Clinton hacks. Although Hillary Clinton enjoyed an uptick in poll numbers after the first presidential debate (CNN poll of polls has her leading 44 to 42 percent), she has at least one new hill to climb: She will have to overcome the overbearing impression her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine, made on Oct. 3 while sparring with the rather collected Gov. Mike Pence. “Pence had a softer and more confident approach,” Georgetown

University political scientist Stephen Wayne said. “Kaine was hyped and overprepared for the debate. Pence did better, but the overall effect will be negligible.” The second presidential debate is town hall style, where audience members pose questions to the candidates who are free to roam around and add their personal touch — a format with which Clinton has a lot of experience. Trump’s best venues have proven to be large, loud rallies. Other questions will be selected by debate moderators Martha Raddatz of ABC News and Anderson Cooper of CNN from online submissions and are expected to focus largely on background checks for gun purchases and social security benefits, according to Bloomberg. Trump has a great asset in the polish and experience of Pence, who was crowned the winner with an overwhelming majority of polltakers. Yet Pence’s ideal performance at the VP debate could very well draw a stronger contrast with Trump’s combustible disposition and set the bar higher for Trump in the upcoming debate.

“Pence was the anti-Trump,” a Nevada Republican told Politico. “He was prepared, smart, composed and he showed respectful competence and leadership.” Pence might be a ticket-balancer, but he can’t repaint the campaign. With only a month to go before the general election, there is not much more Trump can do to undo his earlier moves that are reaping disdain. On Thursday, 30 congressional Republicans signed a letter stating that they simply could not vote for Trump along with searing reproach. “In nominating Donald Trump, the Republican Party has asked the people … to entrust their future to a man who insults women, mocks the handicapped, urges that dissent be met with violence, seeks to impose religious tests for entry into the United States, and applies a de facto ethnicity test to judges,” the letter read. “He offends our allies and praises dictators. His public statements are peppered with lies …” In terms of Clinton’s obstacles, reports have surfaced about a new stream of hacked emails that threaten to expose

Clinton Foundation secrets with allegations of “pay to play” dealmaking and include files purporting to prove it. Remarks from the self-proclaimed hacker, the notorious Gufficer 2.0 (said by some to have Russian ties) seem to imply that security around the Clinton Foundation databases was weak. “Hillary Clinton and her staff don’t even bother about the information security. It was just a matter of time to gain access to the Clinton Foundation server.” The Clinton camp refuted the claim that the hacker stole files. “We still have no evidence Clinton Foundations systems were breached and have not been notified by law enforcement of an issue,” a foundation official said. “Given the Russians’ long track record of faking the origin and doctoring the content of documents acquired through cyberattacks, the committee is working to determine if these were stolen from our network,” said Meredith Kelly, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee national press secretary.

New York state plans to offer Medicaid coverage for youth gender treatment Health Department officials are reversing a prohibition against Medicaid payments for youths diagnosed with gender dysphoria. GARY KANE @MetroNewYork gary.kane@metro.us

Transgender youths will soon qualify to receive Medicaid coverage for hormone treatment under a proposal announced by the state Health Department. The agency intends to amend the Public Health Law to allow Medicaid payments for youths to be treated for gender dysphoria, a diagnosis in which a person exhibits a strong desire to be treated as a different gender or want to be rid of his or her sexual characteristics. Prior to the rule change, the state provided Medicaid coverage for such treatment only for adults. Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides

ISTOCK

financial aid to low-income people for health and medical care. The agency stated in its proposed rule change that it has noticed “the beginning of a shift” in the approach that private insurers are taking with regard to claims filed on

behalf of patients under the age of 18 who are being treated for gender dysphoria. The agency also consulted with doctors about efficacy of the treatment. “All of these practitioners were of the opinion that the use of pubertal suppressants

and cross-sex hormone therapy could be medically necessary in the treatment of GD in individuals under age 18,” the agency wrote. The health department’s decision will undoubtedly be applauded by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups,

which have criticized the denial of Medicaid coverage for youths diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The change will not take effect immediately; the rule has a 45-day comment period after which the state can adopt it. New York was among

a handful of states that had enacted prohibitions on Medicaid payments for such treatments, The New York Times reported. It was a policy that dated back to the administration of Gov. George Pataki, a threeterm Republican who left office in 2006.

New Statue of Liberty museum breaks ground with Diane Von Furstenberg Leave it to Diane Von Furstenburg to give Lady Liberty a makeover. On Thursday the fashion designer, philanthropist and Belgian immigrant joined surprise guest Bill de Blasio and Steve Briganti, CEO of Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, to break ground for a grand new museum and plaza on Liberty Island slated to open in 2019. Due to restrictions put in place following Sept. 11, 2001, only about 5 percent of the 4.3 visitors who come to Liberty Island each year can get into the small museum inside of the statue itself, where her original torch is displayed. And even fewer are able to go up to the observation area in her crown.

Statue of Liberty plaza and museum rendering RUBENSTEIN/FXFOWLE

The new museum will accommodate every person who steps foot on Liberty Island. The renderings of the 26,000-squarefoot museum and the

outdoor space, depict a glass enclosed torch exhibit that seems to rise from the ground. One of the most exciting museum features will be on

the inside: a virtual reality film that allows visitors to fly around the interior of the statue, and look through Lady Liberty’s eyes onto the struggles of

others fighting for freedom throughout history and today. Von Furstenberg has been dubbed “the godmother” of the new Statue of Liberty museum for undertaking the fundraising of the nearly $100 million project, for and providing her priceless creativity. And as an icon of a successful Americanimmigrant she found this project to be especially salient — though at first she resisted. Furstenberg came up with the idea for a tremendous mural for the museum’s entrance consisting of 50 stars (inspired by the American flag) forged from engineer Gustave Eiffel’s original wrought-iron bars that had supported the statue for 100 years. Each of the

stars is financed by donors including Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, David Geffen and George Lucas. “I first hesitated. I did not need another project, my husband could divorce me,” she joked at the groundbreaking ceremony.” “Indeed Lady Liberty is the symbol of what everything America is about. Freedom, hope possibility and resilience. It is her that millions of immigrants saw first, their hearts full of dreams for a brighter future,” she said. Phelps Construction Group will be doing the actual building. And the interior of the museum will be designed by ESI Design. AMANDA MIKELBERG

Half of all working New Yorkers are foreign-born, according to study “From manual laborers to civil engineers, these workers form the backbone of myriad industries and play an enormous role in the city’s economy across all five boroughs,” the study’s author wrote. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

Immigrants make up half of New York City’s workforce and 70 percent of certain occupations, according to a new study, which also found that the city’s working poor tend to be foreign born. The report, released Thursday by the Center for an Urban Future, focused on the impact that foreign-born workers have on the city’s economy. The occupation with the most foreignborn workers is medical aide, with 82,233 immigrants working those jobs in New York. Seventy-six percent of all medical aide workers citywide are immi-

BRIEFS NYPD: Knife-carrying clown intimidates people on subway, chases teen A person brandishing a knife and wearing a clown mask intimidated riders on a subway train Wednesday afternoon and then chased a teenager out of an Upper East Side train station, police said. The clown blocked the doorway of a 6 train, preventing people from exiting, according to NBC New York. A 16-year-old boy pushed past and ran through a turnstile and darted up the stairs at the 96th Street station on Lexington Avenue. When he looked back, the clown was chasing him and flashing a kitchen knife. The incident, which happened around 4 p.m., comes just days after the NYPD told New Yorkers to not buy into the hype about creepy clown threats.

grants, the study said. Employees working as textile and garment pressers are 96 percent foreign born. Fields such as cooks and parking lot attendants are dominated by foreign-born workers (both 78 percent), as are medical technicians (71 percent) and welding, soldering and brazing workers (72 percent). The career path with the fewest num-

ber of immigrant workers is budget analysis. Just 264 out of 1,450 budget analysts in the city are foreign born, according to the report. The occupation with the lowest share of foreign-born workers is firefighting with just 8 percent. More than half of all immigrants work in just 27 fields, according to the report. The top “higherwage” occupation

with the most foreignborn workers are the medical and life sciences with 70 percent foreign-born workers. Medical and life sciences is also the field with the most growth in immigrant workers since 2000, the study found. The roles with the least amount of immigrant workers? Agents and business managers for artists, athletes and performers. The median an-

nual income, or what the typical immigrant worker earns in New York is $43,700, while the median income of native-born workers is $54,700 annually, the report said. About 28 percent of immigrant workers earn less than $25,000 a year. Jobs with the most immigrant workers tend to use insecurity about immigration status as a method of exploitation and an excuse to pay poor wages, the study said. Conversely, jobs with the lowest share of foreign-born workers pay better and offer a “pathway to the middle class,” according to the report. The Center for an Urban Future describes itself as an “independent, nonpartisan policy organization, CUF uses fact-based research to elevate important and often overlooked issues onto the radar of policymakers and advance practical solutions that strengthen New York and help all New Yorkers participate in the city’s rising prosperity.”

Program to be headed by attorney who administered funds for 9/11 victims’ families. The Roman Catholic Church in New York has created an arbitration system for child victims of sexually abusive priests, providing an opportunity for compensation to accusers who are shut out from filing civil lawsuits by statutes of limitations. The Archdiocese of New York said on Thursday the program would be administered by Kenneth Feinberg, the influential Washington lawyer who has directed funds for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and several mass shootings. Feinberg and Camille Biros, a longtime associate who has worked with Feinberg on other compensation funds, will have “complete autonomy,” the church said. The archdiocese has agreed to abide by their decisions, no matter how much money Feinberg and Biros might award to victims. Former New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska and child psychiatry expert Jeanette Cueva will comprise an oversight committee. The arbitration scheme, which was put into place by Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the archbishop of New York, represents a novel approach to compensating victims of predator priests, whose abuse of children has scandalized the church in dioceses across the United States.

The church has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to victims in settlements, but a leading victims’ group has complained others have been cut off by statutes of limitations that prevent lawsuits after a certain number of years. In New York state, those limits are three to five years, whereas many traumatized young victims are unable to denounce their abusers until years later. A representative of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) welcomed any program that would aid survivors, but she remained skeptical, given what she considers church protection of abusive priests. “Once again they’re saying yes, our guys committed horrible crimes, but we’re going to make up the rules for how these crimes are handled,” said Barbara Dorris, outreach director for SNAP. “They are the ones who concealed and enabled the predators. We feel it’s designed to mollify politicians.” The New York archdiocese, which encompasses 10 counties, has received about 200 complaints about 40 to 50 priests over four decades and has reached settlements with around 30 victims, spokesman Joseph Zwilling said in a telephone interview. All those priests are either dead or have been removed from the ministry, Zwilling said. The first phase of the program would handle cases for accusers who have already come forward. A second phase would take new cases. REUTERS

A New Jersey commuter train accelerated to twice the speed limit shortly before it crashed into a station in Hoboken last week, investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday. The engineer applied the brakes less than a second before the train crashed into the station’s bumping post, according to information obtained from the train data record-

er, the investigators said. A woman on the station platform was killed in the Sept. 29 crash and more than 100 people were injured. The NTSB said preliminary data showed the train was traveling at 21 miles per hour at the time of the crash, twice the maximum 10 mph speed limit in the station. The NTSB said the

engineer-induced emergency braking occurred less than a second before the collision. The engineer of the train told investigators he was fully rested but has no memory of the incident, the NTSB said Sunday. Thomas Gallagher, a 29-year New Jersey Transit veteran who was injured when the train derailed, told investigators the train was running at 10 miles an hour when it was approaching the station, NTSB Vice Chair Bella Dinh-Zarr said at a news conference Sunday. When interviewed by investigators, Gallagher said he conducted various procedures, including checking the train’s speedometer, and put his cellphone away during the trip, NTSB said this week. Eggleston said Obama has commuted more sentences than the previous 11 presidents combined — and more this year than in any other single year in U.S. history. Civil rights advocacy groups had hoped that his administration would be able to process thousands of clemency applications, but Obama’s programs has experienced long backlogs. “While he will con-

Obama has now granted a total of 774 commutations during his presidency, which ends on Jan. 20, as part of his push to reform the criminal justice system to reduce the number of people serving long sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. ADVICE BETWEEN ROUNDS Well, the second presidential debate is at hand, or as I like to call it: The Reaping 2. Seriously, after Donald Trump’s lackluster performance last time, I practically expect Hillary Clinton to come riding in on a Harley, wearing a spiked helmet and blasting “Hells Bells.” I know some Trump diehards want to think he did OK the first time, and for about a little while he did have her on defense. But then she tore into him so fiercely he went white in the face — which, all things considered, was a pleasant change from orange. But I digress… As I’ve noted here before, polls say both these candidates are pretty big disappointments to the public at large, and only a minority expect much good no matter who gets elected. But debates should be at least interesting, and if one person just lays there being kicked it gets monotonous. So in

TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the book “My Year of Running Dangerously.” @tomforemancnn

the spirit of competition, let me offer a little advice to the Republican contender. First, you’ve got to get Clinton off balance. She’ll be ready if you come at her over emails, Benghazi, bank speeches or her husband’s indiscretions. Ask her about the Giant’s secondary, and the

point spread for the Pats with Brady back in the game. When she looks confused, shout “Ha! And you call yourself a leader!” Second, don’t get lured into debating policies. So far that has not been your strength. When she throws out any information that sounds solid, say “Oh, so those are the ‘facts’?” and make quote marks in the air with your fingers. Pro tip: eye rolling never hurts. Third, distract her. Whenever she has you pinned down, change the subject fast. For example, if she says “Mr. Trump, I believe you are hiding something in your tax returns!” You respond, “Yes, a delicious BLT!” Or you could study more, practice like you mean it, and actually be ready this time around. I’m not sure that will help you win, but I hear a Harley revving in the hallway — so it’s worth a shot.

US FCC to vote on revised broadband privacy regulations The Federal Communications Commission will vote Oct. 27 on a revised proposal for rules to safeguard privacy of broadband users. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s initial proposal came under harsh criticism from internet service providers such as Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp. because it subjected them to more stringent rules than websites like Facebook Inc., Twitter or Google, which are overseen by Federal Trade Commission rules. Providers had especially objected to sweeping “opt in” requirements under the initial proposal for using nearly all consumer data. Under the proposal, providers must only get “opt in”

or affirmative consent for sensitive data like health, finances, webbrowsing history, child data, and Social Security numbers. But it allows other data to be used with “opt out” or implied consent for marketing purposes. FCC officials said the rules are more in line with FTC privacy rules for websites. USTelecom, a trade group representing Verizon, AT&T and others, said it was concerned the FCC “is now attempting to redefine what consumers may regard as sensitive” and might not agree with the FTC’s definition. Wheeler said the FCC has long required telephone companies to protect information associated with phone

calls and now must do the same with internet service. Several consumer groups including the Consumer Federation of America backed the revised proposal, as did Sen. Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat. REUTERS

Judge questions Airbnb stance on San Francisco rental law The case pits San Francisco leaders against Airbnb and other allies in the tech industry in the midst of a housing crisis in the city. A U.S. judge expressed skepticism toward a bid by Airbnb to halt a San Francisco law that imposes fines on home rental companies for processing bookings by hosts not registered with the city. Local officials want to maximize tax collection on rental units, while tech advocates say internet firms should not be hamstrung by myriad local rules on what they can publish. At a hearing in San Francisco federal court on Thursday, U.S. District Judge James Donato said he was “concerned” with Airbnb’s position because the San Francisco statute targets only bookings processed by Airbnb, not what the company publishes on its website. “I’m just struggling with understanding how this ordinance inherently

Airbnb GETTY IMAGES

requires me as a district court to treat your client as a publisher,” Donato said. The San Francisco ordinance requires Airbnb and similar services to verify that people booking shortterm rentals on their sites have registered with the city. The services would face fines of $1,000 each time they process a booking from an unregistered host. Airbnb attorney Jonathan Blavin said even though the statute deals with bookings, it would still force Airbnb to screen the listings it publishes. In its lawsuit, Airbnb said it was protected by the federal Communications Decency Act and cannot be held responsible for ensuring hosts have complied with the city’s

rules. Airbnb has asked for a court injunction prohibiting the ordinance from taking effect. The Communications Decency Act, passed in 1996, was intended to protect free speech online and has since become a favorite shield for social media and e-commerce sites against a variety of lawsuits. Recently, however, some judges have pushed back on broad interpretations of the law. Donato expressed concern about how Airbnb could comply with the ordinance without disrupting its business, and asked an attorney for San Francisco if the city would be willing to delay the ordinance until it developed an automated system for Airbnb to verify host registrations quickly. City attorney Sara Eisenberg said she was not authorized to agree to such a delay. She suggested that Airbnb could adopt a system similar to Uber, which requires its drivers to upload a copy of their drivers license before being allowed to operate on the ride hailing platform. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

We can’t really talk to Justin Theroux about “The Girl on the Train.” In the movie version of the mega-best seller, the actor and writer plays Tom, the ex-husband of Emily Blunt’s publictransit-riding voyeur, and one of several potential perpetrators in the missing-person case that forms the plot. Most of his big stuff doesn’t happen until the third act, and we’d never dream of spoiling it (even though so many readers already know what happens). But there’s plenty of other things to talk about. Theroux, 45, is a Renaissance man: He stars in “The

Since we can’t say much about your character, we can talk about Emily Blunt’s protagonist. I found it was an empathetic portrayal of someone who’s a hot mess, as well as a voyeur, which is usually portrayed as creepy. But that’s something we all do anyway. You ride the subway and stare across the aisle. We think, “They’re probably this or that.” We probably don’t do it to the extent that she does, but we do it every day. It’s human nature. I feel like journalists and actors and writers are the only people who can people-watch and not

seem creepy. It’s like, “We’re just doing our job!” Exactly. It’s about observation. It’s important to stay street-level and listen to strangers — to a tolerable degree, if someone’s allowing me to. I know that sounds like a dumb actor thing to say. Do you hate actor-speak — when actors wax poetic on their “craft”? Yeah. That’s why I love watching James Lipton. It’s a s—show every show. I love watching DVD extras, particularly war movies, where the actors say, “Oh, we were in a war!” No. It’s our job to pretend to make some faces. That’s it. [Laughs] Just say the words that other people wrote. It’s not like we’re doing brain surgery. Writers’ jobs are way harder. Way harder. Acting is

a dessert compared to creating a f—ing entree. When actors get scripts and they say, “Yeah, I don’t think I’d say this,” or “I don’t think I’d do that,” it’s like, “Really? Because you didn’t come up with it. And I thought you would.” No one does a Mamet play and goes, “You know what? I’m just gonna riff on this!” Movies and television are, for some reason, the only mediums where actors can say, “I want to change this.” It sounds like you don’t have a lot of actorly ego. I don’t! I don’t even have a lot of writerly ego. You were in David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive.” With Lynch, you can’t act like a prima donna. With David, no one has actorly ego. If you did, he wouldn’t hire you in the first place. And David’s not known for his

sparkling dialogue. He has some of the weirdest lines you’ll ever say. You say them and he’ll do the rest, because he’s a beautiful filmmaker. You work with auteurs like him, and you wouldn’t dare take credit for [the work]. “Mulholland Drive” was recently voted in a critics’ poll the best film of the 21st century so far. I saw that! I’d say, “Yeah, it’s a great film,” and I realize I did nothing to make it that way. That’s top to tail his invention. I was just servicing his thing. I feel the same way about Damon Lindelof [creator of “The Leftovers”]. I can take very little credit for it because so much of that came from that guy’s brain. I just help present it to people, but he’s the guy who created it.

What to see the second weekend of the New York Film Festival

Oh, the New York Film Festival ain’t over yet. In fact, it’s only at the halfway point. There are still huge films yet to bow, first and foremost being “Personal Shopper.” Kristen Stewart is now an indie and art-house darling, so much so that she’s now made two films with French genius Olivier Assayas. The first was “Clouds of

Sils Maria”; the second is a more mysterious creature: a sort of art film ghost movie, more playful than terrifying, and often quite funny. Other biggies to catch this weekend include the Brazilian “Aquarius,” in which Sonia Braga absolutely kills it as a fiery woman fighting to keep her longtime

seaside apartment. Belgium’s ever-reliable Dardenne brothers (“Two Days, One Night”) make their version of a detective movie with “The Unknown Woman.” “20th Century Women” finds Annette Bening bonding with Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning, while “Julieta” is another lush and gorgeous Pedro Almodovar film.

It’s been a while since Thomas Haden Church did television. The 56-year-old actor starred in sitcoms in the 1990s like the hit “Wings,” and the short lived “Ned and Stacey” before hitting the big screen for his Oscar nominated role in 2004’s “Sideways,” in which he played a washed up actor on a road trip through wine country. But it was a call from longtime friend Sarah Jessica Parker that officially brought Church back to TV with HBO’s “Divorce,” which chronicles a married couple’s long road to breaking up. The show premieres this Sunday on the network. Church chatted with us from his ranch in Texas about moving out of Los Angeles, why he decided to tackle the role of a husband being cheated on by his wife (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and what it’s like working with one of television’s most beloved stars. Where are you calling from today? I’m at my house in Texas. I don’t know if you know Texas very well, but it’s in a town

I moved away from L.A. five years ago and just sort of made friends with the idea that it might be better to not be seen and just be heard from periodically. I do my press obligations and then I come back home. A lot of the movies don’t happen in California. They happen everywhere else.

So how did the opportunity with “Divorce” come about? Sarah Jessica and I worked together on a movie called “Smart People” years ago and we hit it off. They were ready to start putting the cast together and she reached out and asked if I would consider it. I had not done TV in a long time, and turned down a lot [of roles] since “Ned and Stacey.” What made you decide to accept this role?

It was definitely working with her. If I am going to go back to television, HBO is really the place to do it. I felt like they were kind of leaving every conceivable door and window open to where the story was going to go, and where the characters were all going to go. I just felt that it was a very unique examination of divorce. What’s it like working with Sarah Jessica? She is supremely professional, disciplined, fun-

LGBT culture is NYC culture A new exhibit uncovers the ways queer artists have influenced the city’s cultural scene. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri letters@metro.us

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama named New York’s most famous gay bar a National Historic Monument. Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn was the birthplace of the gay rights movement, when a riot broke out in June 1969 during a police raid, launching a national movement. But, as a new exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York proves, the Big Apple had long been a hub of gay culture, a place where LGBTQ individuals flocked to find community and acceptance. “Gay Gotham: Art and Underground Culture in New York,” which opens Friday, examines the way in which these queer communities inspired and nurtured some of the greatest artists of the 20th century whose radical work still reverberates today. “I had done two other shows at the Museum of the City of New York, and I had noticed both times these gay networks, sort of

hidden in plain sight, among artists,” says exhibition curator Donald Albrecht. “I wanted to ‘unhide’ that story.” “Gay Gotham” features 225 works from LGBTQ artists, both iconic and obscure, presented chronologically to create a trajectory through 20th century culture. While the exhibition includes work from so many artists, it focuses on 10 key figures: composer Leonard Bernstein, playwright and poet Mercedes de Acosta, activist Harmony Hammond, dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones, “arts impresario” Lincoln Kirstein (who co-founded the New York City Ballet), artist and doll-maker Greer Lankton, photographers George Platt Lynes and Robert Map-

plethorpe, Harlem Renaissance author and painter Richard Bruce Nugent and pop artist Andy Warhol. “We picked these 10 individuals not only because their artwork is very good, but because they’re emblems of a certain chapter of gay life in New York.” De Acosta, for instance, represents the more permissive swinging ’20s and ’30s, with her hauteur and lesbian affairs with high-profile stars like Greta Garbo and Isadora Duncan. Bernstein, who largely stayed in the closet at least publicly, wrote the music for “West Side Story,” a retelling of “Romeo and Juliet” with a message of racial and cultural tolerance whose other creators, from the choreographer to the lyricist, were all gay. And of course there’s Warhol, whose Factory provided a haven for all sorts of misfits in the 1960s, and who brought gay sex and culture, uncoded, into mainstream art. That cross-generational collaboration is what has given the LGBT community such a powerful voice in New York’s cultural and artistic landscape. “The exhibition is really about the power of collaboration,” says Albrecht.

The music is better. [Laughs] I think the overall show is just really strong. Nine Track was obviously amazing for me in its own way because it was my first time, but I figured out a lot more about what I needed on the road. Tony Royster [Jr.] is on drums with me and he’s one of the best in the world. I wanted the best of the best behind me. I was really inspired by seeing Alicia Keys perform — I saw a small show of her’s and she gave me ideas for Don’t Talk [Tour]. I wanted give it a soulful, churchlike vibe. Speaking of Alicia, you’re the mentor to her team on this season of “The Voice — what was that experience like for you? I love arranging music and putting songs together and switching up keys so it was a natural environment for me. I actually forgot I was on TV. You were also on “Dancing with the Stars to perform “We Don’t Talk Anymore with Daya — does the song work for you with people other than Selena? Selena is taking a bit of a break and wanted her time off and that’s cool, but that song keeps popping up. I’ve done it with a few different people and [“DWTS] was another new refreshing

spin. I think that’s why that song has lived on for so long. What’s going on with your next album, are you already at work on it? Do you write on the road? I’m writing; I have a studio on the back of my bus. I get off stage and I go right to the studio to work on that next album. I have a good handle on it now. I’m working on a few songs that are potential singles — but, by the way, I never think of songs as singles, I just want them to be great. I saw you tweet out support to Kim Kardashian following what happened to her in Paris. Does that incident put the risks of being a public ďŹ gure yourself on your mind at all? It does; sometimes people feel like they have the right to be near someone because they see their personal life in virtual reality. They forget that they’re still people, not inanimate objects. Does it still psych you out that you’re now a celebrity? It’s kind of crazy. [Laughs] Weirdly enough it pops up in my head when I’m just making music in my zone. I’ll be doing vocals and be like, “Jeez, outside the studio, I’m celebrity Charlie now.â€?

Things to watch as the Jets and Steelers face off in Week 5

The 1-3 Jets are in rough shape and need a win against the potent Steelers offense.

Are you on the Wentz Wagon yet? It’s time to get on board.

NFL Week 5 best bets: Titans, Eagles, Raiders safe picks

TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

The Jets have picked a bad time to slump, particularly in the secondary, as they head to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers’ high-powered aerial attack. This is undoubtedly a big game for a reeling Jets (1-3) squad for many reasons, but it’ll be a little more personal for a handful of their stars. Cornerback Darrelle Revis, wideout Brandon Marshall, and safety Rontez Miles are all Pittsburgh natives. And starting defensive lineman Steve McLendon is a former Steeler and is facing his former squad for the first time. Familiarity and home roots aside, this contest is huge for a Jets squad that is still in the midst of its brutal six-game opening stretch. And with the Arizona Cardinals (1-3) and Baltimore Ravens (3-1) still to come, it’s imperative for Gang Green to knock off the Steelers and get back into the AFC Wild Card race. It may only be the first week of October, but the Jets’ season is already at a pivotal crossroad.

happens 1Fitz

The past two weeks have been a nightmare for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, as he’s tossed nine interceptions – and this following his stellar performance in a Week 2 win at Buffalo that earned him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. That seems so long ago. Since then, Fitzpatrick has taken the league’s interception lead with 10. He’s entering the Pittsburgh game

already undermanned, as he’ll likely be without wideouts Eric Decker (labrum) and rookie Jalin Marshall (shoulder). Historically, Fitzpatrick has been horrible against the Steelers, as he’s 0-4 as a starter and his teams have been outscored 149-85. The Steelers are one of only two franchises that he’s faced multiple times without garnering a win — the other being the Seattle Seahawks, who vanquished him, last week. The gunslinging signal caller will need to be more careful with the football, as he’s already tossed more picks than the Bears, Chiefs, Bills, Chargers, Raiders, Packers, Cowboys, Vikings, Patriots and Eagles … combined!

2Secondary woes

Despite the aforementioned plights of the Jets’ passing game, the Steelers can be beaten via the pass. The Jets aren’t the only secondary unit that’s struggling, as Pittsburgh

5

HISTORICALLY, THE JETS HAVEN’T BEEN STRONG AGAINST THE STEELERS, WINNING JUST FIVE OF 22 PREVIOUS MEETINGS. is ranked 30th in passing defense (27th overall) and have given up an average of 316.5 passing yards per game. The Jets may be shorthanded at wideout, but Fitzpatrick will still have Brandon Marshall and the ascending Quincy Enunwa — not to mention stellar receiving options out of the backfield in running backs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell. Enunwa has the size, speed, and talent to replace Decker, while Marshall appears to be back in form, if his four-catch, 89-yard, one touchdown effort against the Seahawks’ Richard Sherman is a testament.

GETTY IMAGES

3Secondary woes, Part 2 No Jets’ piece is worth mentioning if it doesn’t include their secondary deficiencies. Ben Roethlisberger can torment any secondary, and with the Jets’ unit hobbled (Revis is nursing a hamstring), this could get ugly in a hurry. Roethlisberger, however, is only 3-3 against the Jets in his career and has thrown just six total touchdowns. He’s coming off a Week 4 outing against the Chiefs in which he torched them with 300 yards passing and had as many incompletions (five) as touchdowns. This is the same Kansas City defense that held Fitzpatrick to three points and intercepted him six times, including a pick-six, so Gang Green needs to be aware – and communicate in the back end. The Jets are yielding an average of 285 passing yards and 16 passes of 20-plus yards, so expect plenty of throwing from Roethlisberger.

The Titans have averaged just 15.5 PPG this year, but their offense ought to win them this game. A rejuvenated DeMarco Murray has averaged 85 yards rushing through four contests and will meet little resistance against Miami’s fourthworst rush defense. Murray’s presence should also open things up downfield for Marcus Mariota, and though he tends to make mistakes (five picks in four games), the Dolphins only have one INT all year so he shouldn’t be afraid to take some chances through the air. Ryan Tannehill and company haven’t fared much better, tallying just 17.8 PPG. Miami’s 2-8 ATS record over their past 10 home games just adds to the long list of reasons to take the Titans and the points. Tennessee is the best bet of the week. The pick: Titans +3.5

Eagles (-3) at Lions The Eagles return to the field off a bye week, which has been a great angle to capitalize on over an extended period of time (13-2 since 2000, and 2-1 since Andy Reid left town). Newly-anointed head coach Doug Pederson and QB prodigy Carson Wentz are in good position to build on that post-bye success this Sunday against the dreadful Lions. Detroit was held in check by the lowly Bears last week, scoring no offensive touchdowns, and figure to meet a similar fate against the Eagles’

suffocating defense (league-low 9.0 PPG allowed in three games). The pick: Eagles -3

Chargers at Raiders (-3.5) Incredibly, San Diego has blown three fourthquarter leads in four games this year. Redemption doesn’t appear to be in the cards this week as the Chargers take their show back on the road; they’re 1-9 in their last 10 away games. The Raiders lackluster defense may have a tough time stopping Phillip Rivers and company, but Derek Carr should be able to torch the Chargers’ sixth-worst pass defense, especially if CB Brandon Flowers misses another game with a concussion. In what projects to be a shootout in the “Black Hole,” the home team clearly has the edge.

Things to watch for as Giants and Packers go at it in Week 5

The Giants defense will be tested once again against Green Bay.

Interestingly though, Rodgers this year has seen his completion percentage fall from last year (it has dropped each of the last five seasons) and his yards per game number is way down. It’s a small sample but worth noting.

KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

Losers of two straight, the New York Giants hope to straighten out their season with a Week 5 game at the Green Bay Packers. At 2-2, this Sunday is a crossroads game for the Giants. A win and things could trend upward for the Giants, especially with a tough couple of games this month. But a loss, yikes. It might just start a tailspin effect. Kicking nets everywhere will be running for cover. Three things to watch from the Giants in Week 5:

Getting pressure

The battle at the line of scrimmage, on both sides, will be key in Sunday night’s game.

Mr. Rodgers is at it again On a yearly basis, Aaron Rodgers is among the best quarterbacks in the NFL and this year is no different. Already through three games he has 617 yards with seven touchdowns and just one inter-

ception. His consistency remains outstanding. For Giants head coach Ben McAdoo, who was the Packers quarterback coach before coming to New York, it will be a battle against the player he once mentored. He said this week that Rodgers has no weak-

GETTY IMAGES

nesses in his game. “Aaron is a little older and a little wiser. Fundamentally, he’s always been one of the best in the league, McAdoo said. “It’s always fun to see guys you used to work with, guys you used to coach, and how they develop.

The Giants come into this game ranked 11th in total defense, not a bad number for a unit that was terrible and last in the league in 2015. But what is bad is that they simply aren’t getting to the quarterback. A big part of the $200 million spent in free agency this offseason was along the defensive line. The Giants re-signed JasonPierre Paul and brought high-caliber linemen such as defensive end Olivier Vernon and defensive tackles Damon Harrison

to bolster their pass rush. The end result is just four sacks this year, tied for worst in the league.

Looking ahead After this game, the schedule for the Giants isn’t exactly a bunch of cupcakes. They face the Baltimore Ravens (3-1) at home in Week 6 then follow that with a game in London against the Los Angeles Rams (3-1). Then they play the surprising Philadelphia Eagles (3-0) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2-2), a team picked by many to win the AFC North. If the Giants don’t right this ship soon things could get ugly and jobs will be on the line. It isn’t panic mode, not yet, but it is teetering near that territory for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2011.

Taurus An important objective is reachable, but you might have to alter your tactics to achieve it. You won’t mind being flexible to deal with shifting conditions.

Scorpio Remain hopeful and expectant, because, just when you think an important matter can’t be finalized to your satisfaction, events will take a turn for the better.

8

Gemini Because you always do quite well with situations that challenge your imagination and creativity, you won’t dodge assignments that appear complex or difficult.

Sagittarius Try again to get in touch with people you believe are important to your plans. They are likely to be more receptive to your ideas than they were before.

3

Cancer Much to your surprise, you’ll perform ably and even reap substantial benefits from an arrangement that you thought offered little or no possibilities whatsoever.

Capricorn Be sure to manage your resources with extreme care, because your material trends look uncertain. Don’t unrealistically raise your expectations.

Leo Teaming up with others could turn out to be a fortunate move for you, especially if your allies are as bold as you are. This is not a day for shrinking violets.

Aquarius In an involvement with friends, don’t depend upon any one person to get things organized. You should know — if you want something done, do it yourself.

Virgo You are now in a cycle where you could receive a lot of deserving acknowledgement and rewards for past work. Instead of easing up, push harder.

Pisces You’re likely to be far more successful in your commercial affairs if you use an indirect approach. Don’t be too obvious about your intentions. EUGENIA LAST
