PUTIN DISMISSES ACCUSATIONS OF MEDDLING IN ELECTION

1

Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted his country was not involved in an effort to influence the U.S. presidential election. Last week, the U.S. government formally accused Russia of launching a hacking campaign to “interfere with the U.S. election process.” Clinton’s campaign, which has charged the Kremlin is trying to help Republican Donald Trump win the White House on Nov. 8, took its allegations a step further on Tuesday when John Podesta, chairman of the Democratic nominee’s campaign, accused the Trump campaign of colluding with Russia. JUDGE GIVES FLORIDA VOTERS MORE TIME TO REGISTER AFTER STORM

2

Residents of Florida were given six extra days to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election by a U.S. judge on Wednesday following the disruption caused by powerful Hurricane Matthew in the state last week. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee extended the registration deadline to Oct. 18, after the Florida Democratic Party filed a lawsuit seeking more time, court records showed. The original deadline to register had been Tuesday, before Walker ordered a one-day reprieve to allow for a hearing on the matter on Wednesday. Florida Democrats had argued that voters were forced to decide between their safety and their right to vote when Republican Gov. Rick Scott ordered mandatory evacuations along a stretch of the state’s Atlantic coast as Matthew approached.

SONY ENTERS VIRTUAL REALITY WITH PLAYSTATION VR

3

Sony Corp. will join the race for virtual reality (VR) dominance on Thursday with the $399 PlayStation VR, a headset the Japanese electronics group hopes will beat pricier rivals and revive its reputation as a maker of musthave gadgets. Emerging from years of restructuring, Sony is reshaping itself to focus on lucrative areas such as video games, entertainment and camera sensors — rather than televisions or smartphones where demand is flat, competition acute and margins thin. The games unit is now the single-largest profit contributor for the group. The PlayStation VR headset, Sony’s first major product launch since it declared its turnaround complete in June, will put the company back on the offensive and test its ability to compete in one of the most talked-about spaces in the industry. Harvard students complain of raw meat, dirty veggies as dining hall strike continues Harvard University Dining Service has been on strike since Oct. 5 in an effort to get better wages and health care. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us

Harvard’s striking dining hall workers entered their second week on the picket line and their walkout has sparked a related protest: Students are complaining that they’ve been served unsanitary food. Students have reported raw meat, meat in vegetarian dishes, cling wrap and tinfoil stuck to their food and dirty vegetables, according to the Harvard Student Labor Action Movement (SLAM). SLAM is a student group that says it is fighting alongside workers for justice not just at Harvard but throughout Boston. “There are really two Harvards — one for the elites that run our university, and one for the workers who labor here every day,” the group proclaims on its website. Students are calling on

Harvard administrators to end the food service workers strike because food quality is deteriorating in dining halls across campus, according to SLAM. When dining hall workers announced their decision to strike, workers and students said they noticed the university stockpiling frozen food, according to the Harvard Crimson. Without the expertise of the experienced Harvard University Dining Service (HUDS) workers, the campus is also serving food that is unsafe for their dietary restrictions, students said. “I am vegan mostly because I am allergic to dairy [casein allergy, not lactose intolerance]. My experience in the dining hall since the HUDS workers went on strike has been difficult,” Hanon McShea, a junior at Harvard, wrote online. “The people staffing the dining halls don’t look out for me like HUDS workers do, nor do they have the expertise of HUDS workers,” she continued. “I haven’t been able to eat much of the hot food because it’s not labeled and no one has known when asked

whether the food is safe for me or not. Some have provided false information. I miss HUDS! When Harvard disrespects its workers, it disrespects its students too.” Harvard disputes claims that the campus is serving unsanitary food while dining hall workers strike. “The food preparation and cooking process continues to be carried out by our professional culinary management team which has always been responsible for maintaining the highest levels of

quality and safety,” read a statement issued by the university. “In addition, HUDS’ experts continue to work to ensure the university’s robust standards for food safety cleanliness.” Harvard asked for some community members to volunteer for shifts with the school’s dining services department while HUDS workers are on strike, according to emails obtained by the Crimson. Many students responded that they would support the strike by feeding HUDS workers out on the picket line. Martine Canfield, who has been a food service worker at Harvard Business School for four years, said that the undergrads have been very supportive, giving them snacks, sandwiches and cookies. Following the announcement that the school was asking for volunteers, the Crimson published a letter to the editor signed by more than 30 professors denouncing the university’s move to ask Harvard employees who are not paid hourly or eligible for overtime to staff the dining halls during this time.

Boston named most ‘active living city’ in America, study finds The study examined the infrastructure of 48 metro communities throughout the country. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

Does living in Boston make you a healthier person? Not quite — but some new research suggests that efforts to keep Boston walkable and bikeable might keep us healthier and happier than the average American urban dweller. Researchers from Gallup and Healthways, a company that explores ways to encourage healthier behavior, said their

research found that “communities that invest in bike paths, parks, walkability and public transit … have residents with better outcomes in key aspects of well being.” They named the Greater Boston area the top “active living community” in the United States, followed by San Francisco and Chicago. The two other East Coast cities in the top five were New York and Washington D.C., which respectively ranked fourth and fifth. The study, part of Healthways’ State of American Well-Being series, examined the infrastructure of 48 medium- to large-size metro communities throughout the country. Those living in the top-five cities are found

to have, on average, “significantly lower rates of smoking, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression; and sig-

nificantly higher rates of exercise, healthy eating, fresh produce consumption,” the study said. Indiana and Oklahoma each have two of

the lowest active living communities, with Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and Tulsa ranking in the bottom five.

The cities toward the bottom of the list had significantly more health problems than the ones recorded in the top five, according to the survey.

Alexa Pisano started her own company as a way to help save the oceans. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us

Most Boston University students take an entrylevel writing class during their freshman year. Alexa Pisano did. But unlike most students, she started a business because of it. BU offers multiple writing seminars that focus on an array of themes, and Pisano, 19, had taken one with the topic “Oceans: Past and Present.” The course inspired her to launch Shop Deep Blue. “We learned about how abundant oceans once were and how different they are now,” Pisano said. “It was super inspiring, and I had no idea that oceans were at the state that they are, so I wanted to spread awareness about it somewhere.” When Pisano signed up for the course, she didn’t realize it would literally be about the oceans. She thought she’d get to write about the ocean in a more “metaphorical” sense. Instead, she learned that the way things are going, there might not be any fish left in the ocean by 2048. “I didn’t know it was literally about fishing and the ocean’s history, so that was a bit of a surprise,” she said, “but I’m happy I took it.” That summer, Pisano launched Shop Deep Blue, a website that sells clothing and accessories featuring her own designs. Ten percent of every sale is contributed to conservation efforts — currently, Pisano is donating to Oceana, an international ocean conservation nonprofit, but she wants to keep her options open and eventually donate to multiple groups. Pisano also makes sure to practice what she preaches. All the shipping and packaging is either completely biodegradable

or completely recyclable, she said. She also included a tab on her website that details conservation efforts she practices along with suggestions for things other people can try. “I want people to realize that you don’t have to drastically change your life,” she said. “Just adjusting something super small or learning something and sharing it with someone else can make a huge difference.” When Pisano completed all the necessary legal documents and launched her website, she sent it to her writing teacher, BU graduate writing fellow Benjamin Kochan, and told him how inspired she was by his class. She said that he bought a shirt right away, her first sale. “As a teacher, I find it quite gratifying that Alexa credits my class for inspiring this project,” Kochan said in an email. Kochan explained that the class challenges students to write about historical and contemporary marine environment problems like overfishing and invasive species. This prompts students to ask how they can make a difference. Alexa took this suggestion to heart with Deep Blue.

BRIEF Fed policymakers closer to rate hike, but ination doubts remain Several voting Federal Reserve policymakers judged a rate hike would be warranted “relatively soonâ€? if the U.S. economy continued to strengthen but doubts on ination remained, according to the minutes of the Fed’s September policy meeting released on Wednesday. The minutes of the Sept. 20-21 meeting, at which the U.S.

central bank held rates steady, also showed the depth of division over timing. “Several members judged that it would be appropriate to increase the target range for the federal funds rate relatively soon if economic developments unfolded about as ... expected, the Fed said in the minutes. Seventeen policymakers participated at the September meeting, of whom 10 had a vote. In the minutes, both voting mem-

bers and the wider group were divided on how much more they can allow the labor market to strengthen before raising rates. Some believe that with the United States already near full employment, ination could rise too quickly if the Fed waits too long. The minutes said “it was noted that a reasonable argument could be made either for an increase at this meeting or for waiting for some additional

information on the labor market and ination.â€? U.S. stocks rose slightly following the release of the minutes, while yields on U.S. government debt pared earlier gains. “They just want a bit more data to be sure. We think they will have those data by the time of the December meeting,â€? said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. REUTERS

Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf quits, replaced by Tim Sloan The changes come weeks after pressure on the bank when it emerged that its employees had potentially opened two million unauthorized deposit and credit card accounts to meet sales targets. Wells Fargo agreed to a $185 million settlement with regulators. Wells Fargo & Co’s veteran chairman and chief executive officer, John Stumpf, is leaving the bank in the wake of a sales scandal and will be replaced as CEO by President and Chief Operating Officer Tim Sloan. The San Franciscobased bank said on Wednesday that Stumpf was retiring with immediate effect. It is splitting the role of chairman and CEO with Stephen Sanger, its lead director, becoming chairman.

Elizabeth Duke, an independent director, will be vice chair. The scandal marked a stunning reversal of fortune for Stumpf, who had built Wells Fargo into the world’s most valuable bank with a focus on Main Street-style lending that was the envy of Wall Street. Politicians were calling on him to resign and a week after a roasting in front of a Senate committee, Stumpf agreed to forgo $41 million in unvested stock awards. However, that was not enough and at a second hearing, some lawmakers called for the bank to be broken up. â€œI have decided it is best for the company that I step aside,â€? Stumpf said in a statement. The bank’s shares rose 2 percent in afterhours trading. On Monday, the bank had reshuffled its top management to give more responsibility to Sloan. Wells Fargo is due to report third-quarter earnings on Friday. REUTERS

UN rights chief: Trump as president would pose global danger U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein cited Trump’s views on vulnerable communities including minorities and his talk of authorizing torture in interrogations, banned under international law, as “deeply unsettling and disturbing.” The world will be in danger if Republican nominee Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, the top United Nations human rights official said on Wednesday. “If Donald Trump is elected on the basis of what he has said already — and unless that changes — I think it is without any doubt that he would be dangerous from an international point of view,” Zeid told a news briefing in Geneva. Trump lashed out at House Speaker Paul Ryan and other “disloyal” Republicans on Tuesday and vowed to campaign in whatever style he wants now that the party establishment has largely abandoned him. This occurred after a 2005 video surfaced last week showing him bragging crudely about groping women and making unwanted sexual advances. Trump has said he

would immediately reauthorize the waterboarding of suspected militants if elected on Nov. 8, contending that “torture works.” President Barack Obama, a Democrat, signed an executive order after taking office in January 2009 that banned waterboarding and other “enhanced interrogation techniques.” Such executive orders can be rescinded by a successor. Zeid said that he would rather not interfere in political campaigns. But when a candidate’s comments pointed to a potential use of torture, prohibited under the Convention Against Torture, a

pact ratified by Washington, or to vulnerable groups possibly losing their basic rights, he had to speak out. In a speech in The Hague last month, Zeid accused Trump of spreading “humiliating racial and religious prejudice” and warned of a rise of populist politics that could turn violent. “I always believe that it’s incumbent on leaders to lead and to lead in a way that is ethical and moral,” Zeid said on Wednesday, when asked about Trump. “The use of half-truths is a very clever political device. Because as every propagandist knows, you allow the listener to fill in the rest.” Trump has portrayed himself as tough on national security and promised to build a wall to stop Mexican immigrant “rapists” from crossing the border. “We have to be on guard to see that in the end vulnerable populations, populations at risk do not again see their rights deprived because of a view that is in the ascendancy based on false premises,” Zeid said. BRIEF Trump intensifies attacks on Ryan with four weeks left until Election Day Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump escalated his attacks on House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday, deepening a fracture in the party with only four weeks to go until the Nov. 8 election. Trump, at a rally before thousands of supporters jammed into a livestock arena in Ocala,

Florida, also attempted to drive voters away from Democratic rival Hillary Clinton with an overwhelmingly negative speech in which he described her as corrupt and unqualified for the presidency. Ryan said on Monday he was no longer going to campaign for or defend Trump and advised House Republicans not to support the White House candidate if they did not want to. His move

followed outcry over a video that surfaced last Friday showing Trump bragging in 2005 about groping women and making unwanted sexual advances. Trump’s response to being abandoned by Ryan, the country’s most senior elected Republican, has veered between saying he feels free now to campaign on his own terms and assailing Ryan and other “disloyal” Republicans. US officials believe Connecticut plane crash was intentional The plane slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames on Tuesday, killing a flight student aboard and leaving an instructor with serious burns. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Wednesday it believes a small plane crash in East Hartford, Connecticut, was due to an intentional act and is transferring the investigation to the FBI. The plane slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames on Tuesday, killing a flight student aboard and leaving an instructor with serious burns. In a press release, the NTSB said its initial investigation indicated that the crash was “the result of an intentional act.” A U.S. national security official identified the student as Feras Freitekh. cords showed he lived in Orland Hills, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, and earned a private pilot certificate last year. The security official, who requested anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, said law enforcement would look into whether Freitekh had ties to terrorism. The official said Freitekh was not known to U.S. intelligence. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx declined to say if the crash was an act of terrorism. The FBI “is going to dig into the facts,” he told reporters on Wednesday. The instructor and Freitekh were the only people aboard the plane when it crashed at about 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT) on Tuesday during

flight training that originated at the HartfordBrainard Airport, local police said. The instructor, who has not been identified, is being treated at the Bridgeport Hospital’s burn center, according to East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc. The New York Times, citing unnamed federal officials, reported that the instructor had told investigators that Freitekh deliberately crashed the plane. East Hartford Police Lieutenant Joshua Litwin said at a news conference on Wednesday that the plane had two sets of controls, but that he did not know which person was flying the plane at the time of the crash.

The 196-page report by the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch said the “war on drugs” was a failure, with rates of drug use unchanged since President Richard Nixon launched the campaign more than 40 years ago. Four times as many people are arrested for possessing drugs than distributing them, the report said. Joe Jonas reveals that he lost his virginity to Ashley Greene Long gone are the days of the Disney Channel and “Camp Rock” for Joe Jonas. The 27-yearold middle Jonas brother, who now leads DNCE, got real in a Reddit AMA (ask me anything), maybe even too real. He shared personal details about losing his virginity to actress Ashley Greene and desperately trashing his drummer’s room to find condoms for the um, sacred … event. “It’s quite the great story because I didn’t have any condoms, so I went to our drummer Jack’s room, who was my roommate at the time and I demolished his room looking for them.” The couple had begun dating in 2010. The 50-year-old singer made it very clear in a selfie video that she would be cancelling her Unbreakable Tour because she and her husband were planning a family. It worked! And although her brother Tito spilled the beans in June that Janet was pregnant, and her baby bump made a debut a few weeks ago as she shopped for baby furniture, we’re just now hearing it straight from the source.

False alarm! Shia LaBeouf didn’t actually get married We were all pretty confused earlier this week when learned that Shia LaBeouf had taken to a Las Vegas chapel, complete with an Elvis impersonator, to marry Mia Goth. We get not having an extravagant wedding, but we weren’t thinking full polyester officiant either. Well it may have all been a sham anyway because Nevada’s Clark County, which covers Vegas, just tweeted that it has no marriage on file for the couple. It said a commitment ceremony was performed at the chapel—not exactly a wedding. So this was obviously either another one of LaBeouf’s grand publicity stunts or just the couple’s idea of a fun date night.

Donald Glover is a dad, who knew? The evidence was right in front of us. In January, there were pictures of “Atlanta” creator and star Donald Glover with a very pregnant mystery girlfriend in Hawaii, and in May a picture of the couple pushing a stroller around New York made the rounds. But there wasn’t a peep from 33-year-old Donald Glover about becoming a father.

Well, there still isn’t, but a source confirmed with US Weekly that the actor, producer and rapper did indeed welcome a new bundle of joy earlier this year. We still have no idea when this happened, or what the baby’s name is, but we’re happy for him! Clearly the former “Community” star takes his privacy seriously, a mature move for someone whose stage name is Childish Gambino.

Gabrielle Union is suing BET over “Being Mary Jane” contract violation Gabrielle Union laid a legal smackdown on BET and Breakdown Production, the entities responsible for her hit show, “Being Mary Jane.” The 42-year-old actress signed on for two more seasons of the show and it was agreed that each season would not surpass 13 episodes. But the wife of NBA baller Dwyane Wade found it shady that BET wanted to film two 10-episode seasons back-to-back, and claims that it actually intend to cram all 20 episodes into one season. This

move would cheat Union out of her contractual raise from $150,000 an episode for Season 4 to $160,000 an episode for Season 5. “Being Mary Jane” is the highest-rated show on BET, and the network has responded to the lawsuit, claiming it is are “within their rights.” Union is suing for breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation, according to legal documents obtained by E! I didn’t want to do this. I didn’t want to do another damn story about the Trump tapes. But I just couldn’t let it pass, not when friends and strangers were posting stories about their sexual assaults for the first time after

hearing him. I’ve shared mine before, so that’s not what I’m writing about. I’m sure almost any woman reading this has experienced something similar. Considering the frequency with which it hap-

pens, I don’t think I’m generalizing. You’ve read a zillion stories by now about Donald Trump bragged to former “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush about kissing women without their consent and grabbing them by

their genitalia. You’ve also probably read a bunch of responses defending Trump, dismissing it as locker room talk and no big deal. For someone who frequently writes about dragons and people

with superpowers, believe me, this is the far more fantastical statement. Or is it? I couldn’t believe what I was watching this weekend at the debate. A man who thinks he’s qualified to run the country said talking about women that way — in a professional setting, no less — and joking about sexual assault was no big deal. I have read comment after comment about how we should just “deal with it,” because that’s what men are like. I refuse to believe that, despite my past and the pasts of many women in the world. We should strive to be better than our baser natures. You know what? I love chocolate. I love salt. I think chocolate-covered pretzels are the perfect food. I want to eat them all day long. But you know what? I don’t get to, because there are consequences. I don’t get to punch the hell out of that guy who I just saw cut in front of an old lady in line. I don’t get to. I can talk to him, but I don’t get to punch him, as satisfying

as that would be. Sure, I have freedom of action and speech, but there are consequences to both of those things. Or there should be. You know why? We tell kids that they can do or be anything. We hold up becoming president one day as the example of the highest goal they can achieve. Our kids look up to the president. When I was a kid, I was excited to hear about President Reagan. I knew nothing about his politics and completely disagree with them as an adult, but as a kid, I looked up to him. If Trump gets elected, there are going to be kids who look up to him, too. This behavior of his? Bragging about sexually assaulting women, blatantly lying about things that are right there on Twitter or recorded by cameras? These things become acceptable. As someone who has spent years dealing with nightmares about my assault, like almost every woman I know, I beg you to see reason. This is no longer about politics. This is about the future. This is not a role model. This is a monster.

Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Parker Posey’s first Christopher Guest movie. Back when she was the queen of indies, the actress’ packed résumé included “Waiting for Guffman,” the first time since “This is Spinal Tap” that Guest made an entirely improvised mockumentary. Posey’s been in every Guest film since, including “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind,” “For Your Consideration” and

the new “Mascots.” This time the subculture of sweet eccentrics in some silly competition are people who dress up in ridiculous costumes to pep up sporting events. This includes Posey’s Cindi, whose mascot is a robotic armadillo who dances to arty electronica. Posey talks to us about creating her own character from near scratch and still being scared to do Christopher Guest’s movies. These are comedies, but since you’re basically coming up with everything yourself, it seems like you have to take these as seriously as you would a drama. It’s a very intense and focused process. You have to essentially write your character’s dialogue. There’s a lot of collaboration with the person you’re acting with, which in my case was Susan Yeagley, who plays my half-sister. It’s a very intimate, caring, generous process. You really feel like you’re portraying the full life of someone. Are you still nervous going in front of his cameras, to do whatever you’ve prepared? You’re scared every time. You show up and you really feel like you’re flying without a net. But I compare it to playing music. You can feel a really good vibe on these movies. The humor, it really doesn’t

make fun of anyone. It’s not mean. It comes from a kind place. In all his movies, we care. We care about these subcultures: the dog shows, small town theater, mascots. You have to think through everything, including the costume and Cindi’s history. How did you put her together? I imagined that she studied dance in college. Then she finds the allfemale basketball team at Amelia Earhart College for Women. She asks, “Is there a mascot here? I want to be one.” And it’s a nine-banded armadillo, which is very armored, almost metallic. That led to me thinking [her music would be] techno-electronica: Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Laurie Anderson, all stuff from the ’70s and ’80s. I just imagined why she would maintain this desire, over 25 years, to get out on the basketball court and perform for not very many GETTY people, IMAGES

Things change Guest has always been able to make these movies outside of Hollywood. But I worry about indies these days, since the budgets have been drained out of them. The market is drying up. It’s been happening for a few years now. There’s more money going into marketing than into material. There’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to change and be aware of that. And you know, I can speak for the actors who don’t get paid. If I can’t get paid, can I sell watches? Can I sell scarves? Actors need ad campaigns now. It’s changed.

and still have this be important to her. Here, she has the chance to be recognized for something that’s important to her. It was a lot of prep, but I think you can tell. Audiences can tell there’s a particular level of investment and openness in Chris’ movies.

WHEN BROOKLYN MET BOSTON Brooklyn Brewery’s Mash Tour brings their Beer Mansion to town this weekend. LUKE O’NEIL

things to do

Now in its fourth year, the 2016 Mash Tour, which lands in Boston this weekend, is Brooklyn Brewery’s citywide update on the concept of the beer festival. “It’s only focused on highlighting what is local in each city, with a heavy presence of culture, food, music, creative artistic mediums and, obviously, beer,” Brooklyn’s community ambassador and educator Gabe Barry says. “This year the tour is looking to reimagine what we mean by celebration.” Beginning Thursday night, there are four components to the weekend’s festivities. Dinner with Friends is a riff on the traditional beer dinner, with Brooklyn’s Head of Culinary Programming Chef Andrew Gerson working with the team at Hojoko on a menu featuring an American Wagyu short rib with gochujang and green kimchi, paired with some of the brewery’s rarer beers. “It’s a time when we get to showcase some of the more rare beers in our portfolio,” Barry adds. “One exciting offering in particular is Serpent, is a collaboration done with Thornbridge Brewery in the UK: A Belgian tripel style, it’s aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels over cider lees, for a funky, tart aged sour.” On Friday, the party heads to Royale for a free performance from Cults, the dreamy noir-pop New York City duo. But save some room for partying and drinking for Saturday, when the Beer Mansion popup takes over Whiskey Saigon. What is a Beer Mansion, exactly, you

might be wondering? “It’s about taking the wonderful array of flavors and quantifying it into a multispace venue,” Barry explains. “Each room starts to take on the personality of different beer styles, which are then built out into art installations. In other words, it’s a like an interactive beer museum and performance space, where you can try a variety of styles, interact with the production process and be entertained along the way. You might just learn something too.” In the Saison Room, for example, Gerson is riffing off the idea of the traditional passed-bite, by preparing dishes, literally, on guests’ hands. “That’s been a lot of fun to watch people be pushed out of their comfort level,” Barry says. On Sunday, the activities are centered around Inman and Porter squares, where a variety of local businesses are taking part in a walking beer-focused tour of the city. The day begins at Trailhead, a combined pop-up Brooklyn bar and Timberland shop, where guests can pick up coupons to a number of area hot spots, like Trina’s, The Independent, Taza Chocolate and Union Square Donuts for free and discounted beers and treats. “Its all about celebrating the local, creative collaborative journey of what celebration is,” she says. “We hope to create a voice and venue for all these individuals to come together and we see beer as the through line.” For tickets, pricing and info visit brooklynbrewerymash.com

Life, death, birth Shovels and Rope release their most personal album to date. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

It’s safe to say Shovels and Rope’s latest, “Little Seeds,” is unlike their previous albums. For the October release, South Carolina duo Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst found themselves writing in the full glare of life’s sadness and beauty, dealing with the birth of their daughter, the death of a friend and the slow loss of aging parents. So among the barroom boogie, country rock and finely tuned balladry, there are some very personal tales. “This one is a little bit different for us,” admits

And they were caught in the middle, and it was unavoidable. “It was occupying a lot of our emotional space,” says Trent. “These songs came out of all that. We pondered whether we wanted to make such a personal record though, and we talked to family and friends to see how they felt about it.” Writing and recording the album, which features the pair playing all of the instruments, is one thing, though. Standing on stage night after night on tour and playing the songs is another. “That’s still an experience we’re new to. We’re a week into this tour for the record,” explains Hearst. “We’re working super personal songs out that people don’t really know in front of a rock and roll crowd. It’s chal-

Trent, speaking with Hearst from Detroit, just after sound check. “We’re usually into more character-based writing. This time around, we had a lot of personal stories to tell. We didn’t plan on it; it was just there and that’s how it turned out.” The couple created the album over the last two years — a time that included pregnancy and birth: “Last August and September we went into power writing mode to finish, and literally the baby came the next day,” says Hearst. The husband-and-wife duo were also caring for Michael’s parents and coming to terms with his father’s Alzheimer’s disease (captured in the song “Invisible Man”). The death of a close friend, Eric, then inspired the poignant “This Ride.” Birth and death:

siblings, Albert and Jennifer Chen, come to terms with being adult losers. Well, “losers, according to certain social guidelines — Jennifer’s just been dumped; Albert was passed up for a promotion. Naturally, the Ivy-educated 30-somethings decide to first blame their misfortunes on their parents, who quickly remind them of their rich and fulfilling upbringing and academic opportunities before getting introspective with the solution to all of life’s existential issues: an international journey. They embark on a metaphorical road trip to China from their California homes, rediscovering their culture, spirit and not-so-shortcomings along the way. We chat with Emily Kuroda, who plays “mom, among other characters in this fiveperson cast, about the role of Asian culture in theater, her upcoming “Gilmore Girls reunion and whether feeling like a “loser is just a millennial problem. With the name of the show, “tiger parenting comes to mind. Does this characterization carry over to the parents in the show at all? I know a lot of people read that book [Amy Chua’s “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother] and it offended a lot of people, but I haven’t read it yet. Note to self: Read book. But yeah, the “tiger mom wants the best for her children but the kids are on their own after col-

lege. Af- ter the parents have given them the education and tools they need for the outside world, they expect the kids to function on their own. They let go after a certain point — that certain point is Harvard, of course. Do you think feeling like a “loserâ€? in the eyes of Jennifer and Albert is more of a millennial problem than ones you faced when you were that age? I do — I’m of the older generation and in my world, we had to struggle a lot more. If we wanted to go to college, we likely had to pay for it ourselves. These are children who grew up comfortably and went to Ivy League schools and became professionals. They never had to take a job for survival and when they’re whining, I can’t relate to that. But that’s the play. They realize, “Why are we whining? What’s wrong with us?â€? Do you think there are cultural factors in the show that are exclusive to Asian-American and Asian families? I think it’s beyond racial barriers — the parent-

child relationship [in the show] is a relationship all people can relate to. It’s the relationship a lot of parents are having with their children right now. Asian parents might be stricter with their kids and put them in the best schools with the best tutors and lessons, but that’s not an Asian thing, that’s an American thing. Are roles for Asian actors in theater improving? We have a new crop of writers that are very exciting, and Mike Lew is definitely one of them. He’s so prolific and writing plays and roles that aren’t just Asian Americans in Asian-American plays. However, we still don’t seem to be considered for lead roles in non-Asian plays. Maybe it’s starting to change, but why does it always have to be an AsianAmerican play? Why can’t we do roles that are mainstream? It’s not happening often, and that’s so frustrating. We have to talk about “Gilmore Girls.â€? Your character, Mrs. Kim [Lane’s mom], will be part of the Netix reunion. Can you tell us about the show? I had such a great time and I’m excited to be back. When we had the first table read and I saw that pretty much everyone was there, it warmed my heart after all these years. It’s so witty and quick and fun. [The late] Edward Herrmann was sorely missed, but I think the show serves him well.

Bruins season preview: Fast start to 2016-17 desperately needed David Backes was the Bruins’ big acquisition over the summer. Can he help guide the B’s back to the playoffs?

Boston cannot have a repeat performance of last October. RICH SLATE @Richslate

sports@metro.us

In a weird way, the Red Sox unceremoniously getting swept out of the MLB postseason by the Indians in the ALDS on Monday does no favors to the Bruins on the eve of the NHL regular season. Boston opens up its 2016-17 campaign at Nationwide Arena on Thursday (7 p.m., NESN) versus Columbus. The B’s first three games are all on the road against fellow nonplayoff teams from last

season (at Toronto on Saturday and at Winnipeg on Monday), so David Ortiz suddenly being retired and the Red Sox bowing out much sooner than we all expected translates into more pressure and scrutiny on the Black and Gold right away. There will be nowhere to hide for the Bruins, which has to be a scary proposition for a team full of question marks and possible holes up and down their lineup. This much we can say, with some certainty: Fresh off a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Cup, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand are playing some of the best hockey of their lives. Goaltender Tuukka Rask should still

be considered elite, and head coach Claude Julien (who has to be on the hot seat, right?) has great experience if nothing else. Boston’s projected toptwo forward lines of Ryan Spooner, David Krejci and David Backes along with Marchand, Bergeron and David Pastrnak should both be lethal. Other than that, who really knows? After he had a fight in Boston’s preseason finale with Philadelphia on Saturday, it’s not hard to picture Backes quickly becoming a fan favorite. “We knew what we were getting with Backes,” noted Julien, who has coached against him in numerous international tour-

Bruins prediction The Bruins actually saw their season win total increase from 2014-15 to 2015-16, even though it was only by one game (41 to 42 wins). The B’s of course, failed to qualify for the playoffs in both of those seasons. Here’s guessing that trend will continue, and Boston will be without playoff hockey in 2017. They just haven’t made enough upgrades at key positions to get too excited. Prediction: 38 wins, 35 losses, 9 OTL. — Matt Burke

naments. “He’s a former captain in St. Louis that’s talking to the young kids and letting his linemates know what’s expected. He’s also helping Spooner. It’s good to have a guy like him.” Things get much murkier on defense as it looks like, at least to start the season, the Bruins

will feature two rookies in their top-two defensive pairings since the oft injured Kevan Miller (expected out for awhile) and Adam McQuaid (dayto-day) are already sidelined. Remind us again why Boston’s front office invested in either of them? That means that Bran-

don Carlo will probably be with B’s captain Zdeno Chara, while Rob O’Gara is playing with Torey Krug. Christian Ehrhoff got a professional tryout late in camp but wasn’t offered a contract and Joe Morrow has again failed to impress so it looks like he’ll be the extra defenseman (healthy scratch). NHL games in October can seem quite trivial on the surface, but recall how Boston’s disastrous 0-3 start (all at TD Garden) set them back right away in 2015-16. Their first two home games this season are also against nonplayoff teams: Oct. 20 versus New Jersey and Oct. 22 versus Montreal, so it’s paramount that Boston takes care of business.
