3 things you need to know US, BRITAIN CALL FOR IMMEDIATE CEASE-FIRE IN YEMEN

1

The United States and Britain called on Sunday for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire in Yemen to end violence between Iranbacked Houthis and the government, which is supported by Gulf states. A Saudi-led campaign in Yemen has come under heavy criticism since an air strike on a funeral gathering in the Yemeni capital Sanaa that killed 140 people according to a United Nations’ estimate and 82 according to the Houthis. On Saturday, a U.S. admiral said a destroyer had again been targeted in the Red Sea in an apparent failed missile attack launched from the coast of Yemen. REUTERS

IRAQI ARMY DROPS LEAFLETS OVER MOSUL WARNING OF OFFENSIVE

2

The Iraqi army dropped tens of thousands of leaflets over Mosul before dawn on Sunday, warning residents an offensive to recapture the city from Islamic State was in its final stages of preparation, according to a military statement in Baghdad. The leaflets carried several messages, one of them assuring the population that advancing army units and air strikes “will not target civilians” and another telling them to avoid known locations of Islamic State militants. The assault on Mosul, the last city still under control of the ultra-hardline Islamic State in Iraq, could begin this month with the support of a U.S.-led coalition, according to Iraqi government and military officials. Islamic State fighters are dug in and are expected to fight hard. They have forced civilians to stay in harm’s way during previous battles to defend territory. REUTERS

GOLDMAN VINDICATED BUT BRUISED IN LIBYAN FUND COURT BATTLE

3

The outcome of a 2½-year legal battle between Goldman Sachs and Libya’s $67 billion sovereign fund is a triumph for the Wall Street giant, which was vindicated despite embarrassing revelations about how some of its bankers conducted business. The London High Court found in favor of Goldman Sachs on Friday, with Judge Vivien Rose dismissing the fund’s arguments, made over the course of a bruising seven-week trial. While the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) is likely to appeal, according to a source with knowledge of the matter, the lurid details spilling out of the case mesmerized observers because of the profile of the parties involved and the glimpse they offered into the secretive world of multi-billion-dollar sovereign wealth fund (SWF) investments. Summer redux

Bolaris’ Weather Watch

JOHN BOLARIS @weathersavior

Get ready to shed the sweaters and jackets as summer will make a comeback this week. Normally during this time of the year, you start reaching for your autumnal gear. Well, put that on hold as temperatures will rise to near-record levels for some as southwesterly winds will usher in unseasonably warm temperatures. It’s a late-season Bermuda high-influence, high-pressure centered over the western Atlantic. A huge clockwise flow of southwesterly winds circulates near Bermuda and

extends down into the Gulf states and then sweeps up along the Eastern seaboard. The results during July and August would be helter-swelter with the mercury soaring into the mid-90s. However, during this time of the year many locations from Philly to New York City to Boston will see temps pop into the mid-80s. Low temperatures by Tuesday morning will be in the lower 60s — normally this would be about the average high for this time of the year. Now I know what you’re thinking: Will this warm shot last into your up-coming weekend? Sorry no can do, as a coastal low could form by Friday and send some rain up along the East Coast, followed by much cooler temperatures

Hurricane season

Boston Today: Mostly cloudy, High 70 Tuesday: Warmer, High 78 Wednesday: Summer-like weather, High 80 Thursday: Scattered showers, High 68 Friday: Rain likely, High 63 Saturday: Rain ends by noon, windy, cool, High 57 Sunday: Mostly sunny, High 57

over this weekend as the mercury falls back into the 60s and 50s. On average, October will have above-normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.

My long-range hurricane outlook that I put out in May, for the season of 2016 was for an active hurricane season with more named storms than normal. Most experts had a below-average outlook. So far this season, my forecast has verified as the hurricane season has been quite active with already 14 named storms as Hurricane Nicole struck the island of Bermuda this past Thursday as a major hurricane. Nicole continues to churn massively high seas in the North Atlantic creating problems for the shipping and fishing lanes. I’m forecasting continued tropical activity through the month of October.

Police ask for public’s help to find serial arsonist

Surgeon removes kidney from wrong patient The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services threatened to terminate Saint Vincent Hospital from the Medicare program if the center does not adopt improvements. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

A surgeon at a Worcester hospital removed a kidney from the wrong patient after failing to confirm the person’s identity, public health inspectors found. provements, the Boston Globe reported. The doctor was not named in the report by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The surgery, which occurred on July 20, was intended to remove a kidney because of a large tumor, according to the

agency’s report. “It was later determined that [the patient’s] admission and plan for surgery to remove the tumorous kidney was based on another patient’s Computerized Tomography scan results, in error,” the report read. Both patients had the

same name, but were reportedly several years apart in age. Authorities told The Associated Press that the hospital failed to follow proper patient identification protocols, which include secondary confirmation of a patient’s identity, as with a date of birth. “We are working to implement enhanced safeguards as identified in the CMS survey, including additional verification steps with physicians,’’ a statement from the hospital, provided to the Globe, read. “This was a deeply unfortunate situation and we will take all steps necessary to prevent it from happening again.’’ The report noted that investigators did find lapses at the hospital, including the fact that computers only displayed names, and not patients’ birth dates.

Tyngsborough police are asking for the public’s help to find what they believe is a serial arsonist who set fire to 11 vehicies during the weekend — one of which spread to an adjacent house. The fires mostly occurred during what appears to be a half-hour spree from about 2:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Oct 8, the department said Friday in a news release. A car was torched at about 10:45 a.m. Oct. 7, and authorities believe it is connected to the arsons that happened hours later. “The perpetrators of this act will be found and held responsible,” Police Chief Richard Howe said in a written statement. “They not only intentionally destroyed the property of law abiding Tyngsborough residents, but also endangered community members, as their actions could have caused a much more serious fire.” The fires occurred out-

side six residences where as many as three cars or motorized scooters in the driveways were burned. One car fire spread to the adjacent home, authorities said. The incidents are being investigated by the Tyngsborough police and fire departments, and state police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Anyone with information about the fires is encouraged to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229. All calls are confidential, and rewards up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest are available. CHRIS CAESAR

War crimes trials at Guantanamo Bay for suspects accused of attacks against the United States have ground to a near halt a decade after the military courts’ creation, with lawyers warning that some detainees could spend many more years waiting to be tried. Despite President Barack Obama’s early vows to close the facility in eastern Cuba amid charges that suspects had been tortured, the United States continues to spend some $91 million a year on military trials at the base, which has 61 remaining inmates. “The military commissions in their current state are a farce,” Marine Brigadier General John Baker, the chief defense counsel, said last month at a Washington legal conference, of the tribunals that prosecute detainees. “The Guantanamo Bay military commissions

have been characterized by delay, government misconduct and incompetence, and more delay.” James Connell, a defense lawyer for Kuwaiti Ammar al Baluchi, one of five suspects on trial for their alleged roles in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said that trial was not likely until maybe 2020, almost two decades after airline hijackers killed nearly 3,000 people. Because the court and much of the evidence lies outside the United States, the trial “is 100 times more complex than even a complex ordinary death penalty case,” said Connell. In contrast with

Guantanamo, federal prosecutors operating in U.S. courts have secured more than 340 terrorism convictions over the last decade, a Justice Department spokesman said. Tanzanian Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani was transferred from Guantanamo to New York in 2009, and 17 months later a civilian jury convicted him for his role in al Qaeda bombings in East Africa. He is serving a life sentence. Just six Guantanamo cases have resulted in convictions so far, with two guilty verdicts being appealed, according to the military commissions’ website. In one appeals case, a federal court overturned two of the three convictions of Ali Hamza al Bahlul, the suspected publicist for slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. An appeal decision is pending on the third charge. REUTERS

NEWS

THE FINAL ROUNDS Here’s how I imagine debate preps: Donald Trump is looking endlessly in the mirror, making a duck face and Hillary Clinton keeps watching the movie “Election” while cheering for Reese Witherspoon. Meanwhile, here are my three things to watch this week in politics. 1. DEBATE REBATE The final presidential debate comes up Wednesday, and it promises to be a slugfest. Both candidates have tried boxing their way through these matches (well, her mainly) but any semblance to civility is now gone. He’ll say the election is rigged and that she’s doping her way through their discussions (and no, he won’t get the drug test he wants). She will accuse him of consorting with the Russians, being unfit for office and perhaps howling-at-the-moon. None of which will help either of them win voters — although each might scare a few more to the other side.

2. REPUBLICAN REGRETS The GOP is in turmoil. Traditional Republicans, who were barely

able to stomach Trump before, are now choking down antacids by the fistful, just as afraid of him winning as losing. Tea Partiers are rattling around in Ted Cruz T-shirts clucking

“I told you so’s.” And the Trump Army is screaming about spineless hypocrites. So, if you are interested in party unity, watch the polls: If Trump surges again, watch all sorts of GOPers start crawling back on his wagon; if not, listen for echoes from Capitol Hill: Donald who? 3. NOTHING TO SEE HERE In any normal election all the stories about the Clinton team’s hacked emails would dominate the news for days. Snippy comments about staffers, secret speech scripts, naked talk of political posturing. Juicy stuff, right? And it is getting a bit of play, but the uproar around Trump is dominating. The question this week: Can he get out of the spotlight long enough, for her problems to be scrutinized? Considering the scope and severity of his issues ... not likely.

and-answer sessions with Goldman Sachs Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and Tim O’Neill, the bank’s head of investment management, at three separate events in 2013 in Arizona, New York and South Carolina. Some excerpts of Clinton’s speeches had already been released. For more than a week, Wikileaks has published in stages what it says are hacked emails from the account of John Podesta,

Clinton’s campaign chairman. Clinton’s campaign has declined to verify the emails. Goldman Sachs did not immediately provide any comment on Saturday. Clinton came under fire for months for not releasing full details of her paid speeches to big business audiences, as opponents accused her of a cozy relationship with bankers and other members of the U.S. financial system. BRIEF Pence: Russia should face ‘severe consequences’ if it’s behind hack Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence contradicted running mate Donald Trump on Sunday by saying evidence points to Russian involvement in email hacks tied to the U.S. election and that Moscow should face “severe consequences” if it has compromised U.S. email security. Pence, appearing in television interviews, also said he and Trump would respect the outcome of the Nov. 8 election. But later the same day Trump stuck by his contention that the race is being “rigged” by the media and at voting locations. “The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary — but also at many polling places — SAD,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday. U.S. intelligence officials believe Russia is behind recent email hacks targeting Democratic Party officials, including the continuing dumps by Wikileaks of documents stolen from the email account of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta. “I think there’s no question that the evidence continues to point in that direction,” Pence said. “There should be severe consequences to Russia or any sovereign nation that is compromising the privacy or the security of the United States of America.” Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview that aired on Sunday that the United States would respond but he gave no details. “We’re sending a message,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” REUTERS

Intruder shot at Miranda Kerr’s home Just as we are finally loosening up a bit after Kim Kardashian West’s harrowing experience with armed robbers in Paris, another violent altercation has us clutching our pearls. According to local news outlets, on Friday morning, a security guard at the home of Miranda Kerr confronted an intruder who somehow scaled an electric fence to gain access to the property. A gory altercation ensued between the two men, which left the security guard stabbed in the eye and the intruder shot multiple times. It appears that Kerr, the supermodel who is engaged to billionaire Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel, was not

Kim makes first appearance since robbery It looks like the Kardashian clan is slowly coming around after Kim’s harrowing robbery. Last Thursday evening, Kim Kardashian West was spotted out for the first time since heading home to Los Angeles after her terrifying Parisian ordeal. E! News reported that she was low key in a black hoodie and leggings for a quick trip to a Beverly Hills restaurant. She rushed back to her awaiting car about 30 minutes later, flanked by security, of course.

Younger sis Kendall Jenner, who had to testify against a stalker earlier in the day, made her first public appearance since the incident on Thursday, as well. US Weekly reports the 20 year-old supermodel toasted the opening of a new What Goes Around Comes Around store in Los Angeles and filmed a couple of scenes for an upcoming season of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” No matter how much they may want to, the Kardashians can’t hide from the cameras.

THEATER

So funny you could die “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” is heavy on the murder, with a double dose of love. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Murder is a dirty business, but in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” it’s more of an elegant execution. “He does it in the most gentlemanly of ways,” says actress Kristen Hahn, who portrays one of the two love interests the show’s leading man takes on. “There’s nothing gory or violent about it.” The national tour of the Tony-winning production arrives in Boston on Oct. 18 for a six-day run at the Citi Shubert Theatre. The musical,

which took home four Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 2014, ended its Broadway run in late January but has been on the road since last September. Hahn, a Connecticut native who was part of the original Broadway ensemble, joins the touring cast as Phoebe D’Ysquith, an aristocratic woman who finds herself in a love triangle with the show’s misguidedly murderous protagonist, Monty. “It’s very tongue-incheek,” says Hahn from the tour’s stop in Detroit. “[Monty] is a distant heir to a fortune and title, so he decides to bump off the other relatives that stand in his way of becoming earl.” Dark? Maybe. But

If you go Oct. 18-23 Citi Shubert Theatre 265 Tremont St., Boston Tickets start at $45, citicenter.org

Kristen Hahn PROVIDED

This dark comedy explores the more sinister side of family money.

Hahn assures us it’s still a good time, and that audience members might even find themselves empathizing with Kevin Massey’s Monty. “These eight [murdered] relatives are all played by one brilliant actor [John Rapson], but are all deplorable human beings,” she adds. As for Phoebe, Hahn says her character and

Monty find common ground as misunderstood members of society. Phoebe, a wealthy woman of means, is presumed to be “haughty and distant,” when she really just seeks human companionship. “She has a heart of gold and is a loving and gentle person,” Hahn explains. “Phoebe has a sort of coming out throughout the show and develops into a con-

JOAN MARCUS

fident woman. I think everyone has felt misunderstood at different times in their lives, and can relate to her and Monty’s experiences in one way or another.” Unfortunately for Phoebe, she’s one of two loves of Monty’s life, competing (somewhat unbeknownst) for his affection with Sibella Hallward, a saucier lady of leisure who is holding out for a husband of,

ahem, greater monetary assets. But for Hahn, any ill will between the characters is kept to the stage. “We’re wonderful friends,” she says of co-star Kristen Beth Williams. “I don’t get to interact a lot with her on stage, but I love watching her scenes. She’s brilliant.” Still dark? OK, maybe. But Hahn believes Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak’s lyrics and music are enough to put anyone in a good mood. “It’s so stunningly beautiful, with lush, soaring melodies,” she says. “I find myself singing them all day long. I wake up singing them, I go to sleep singing them. They’re extremely catchy; you won’t be able to stop humming along.”

She plays Marybeth, a worker bee at the Treasury Department tasked (blackmailed, really) by a fed (J.K. Simmons) to figure out the truth about a math wiz (Ben Affleck) who might have mob ties. The movie arrives shortly before “Shooter, the forthcoming USA show based on the Mark Wahlberg movie, in which she’s the female lead opposite Ryan Phillippe. Born in England but raised in America, AddaiStevenson, 31, talks to us about liking dense movies, her sudden flurry of strong roles and the difficulty of staring at computer screens onscreen. I have to admit this movie is so dense that I don’t think I got all of it. Even at the end when I could piece it all together, I was sure I was missing a lot of nuances. I personally like these kinds of movies, where it plays out and then it gets to

the end and you’re thinking back to everything you just watched. You want to go back and watch it again. Everything that’s being presented is there for a reason; there’s not a shot or frame that’s wasted. Every little piece of information is meaningful. It feels like there are fewer and fewer times in life where something is really demanding that of you, where you shut everything else out and really focus on the story unfolding in front of you. It’s like reading a satisfying book. Marybeth is a very quiet person who’s always thinking. Did you identify with that? I tend to be a pretty analytical person. I’m somebody who’s constantly thinking and always in my own head. Perhaps that element works for this character. I’m a pretty reserved, quiet person, though I’m not necessarily passive. If I’m just sitting still,

there’s a lot going on in my brain. You spend a lot of the movie staring at computer screens. I imagine that’s weirdly diďŹƒcult to do and not make look strange. [Laughs] You don’t want to push it. It can start getting a little weird if you’re staring at a computer and you feel you have to contort your face to show the audience I’m discovering things, connecting the dots. You don’t want to be too heavy-handed about it. J.K. Simmons’ character tasks her with working with him on this case, as though he sees something in her she doesn’t know she has. As an actor, do you feel that way a lot? I’m not in a position where I can select my roles. I have to audition the old-fashioned way. I prepared [for this] as I do for anything I go in for. But at the end of the day, whatever qualities they saw in me were ones I wasn’t aware of. I’ve been having more and more instances like that. And I’ve even been having a better sense of myself. When people give you more and more opportunities, you start owning that. That’s been a lovely discovery for me the last few years. I’ve been lucky to play female characters who are strong, are intelligent, are a little vulnerable.

Kristen Stewart knew she had to work with Kelly Reichardt. The “Wendy and Lucy” filmmaker’s previous movie, “Night Moves,” starred two of her friends, Dakota Fanning and Jesse Eisenberg. “Both of them were like, ‘Do anything with her!’” she recalls. And so we have “Certain Women,” which tells three stories of women: Laura Dern plays a lawyer who gets involved in a hostage situation; Michelle Williams pops up in the second act as a woman struggling with her marriage. Stewart comes in during the third, playing a frazzled night school teacher who draws the mysterious attention of a lonely young woman (Lily Gladstone). It’s a sad movie. And Stewart, 26, loves it that way. We could just spend most of this interview geeking out over Kelly Reichardt together. I f—ing love her. I’m lucky enough to know her, and I can tell you that her movies really reflect her. You watch one and it’s very distinctly her. That’s kind of rare. She’s able to create this whole environment that focuses on moments that happen in between the moments that people often focus on in movies. There’s something biting about her

movies, too. I don’t think you laugh, but you think, “That’s funny. That’s really funny.” Her new film is a film about women, but it’s not overtly a political statement, or it doesn’t let itself be defined only by that. They’re each up against something, but not in a way that’s selfaggrandizing. It’s not like, [shakes fist] “I am going to overcome this adversity!” None of them find resolve. They all want something they can’t have. You’ve got Michelle’s character, who’s kind of f—ing with the conventional dynamic of what a marriage is. And then you have Laura’s character acknowledging the illogical nature of bureaucracy, and the fact that men don’t listen to women. But she doesn’t really do anything about it. It’s agonizing, but in a quiet way.

people wrong is kind of a relief. We’re all so unaware of each other. But [knowing that] does set you free a little bit. It’s weird. I’m constantly, with every friendship, every f—ing family relationship, I’m like, “You need to know me!” Then you realize no one can know anyone. And it is relieving. There’s a relief to that. We never really know each other. On the other hand, that’s isolating and scary. I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten more chill about not having a deep connection with every person I meet. I’ve done that as I’ve gotten older, too. When I was younger I got superfreaked out if there wasn’t a clarity to every exchange. Now it’s like, “That’s fine, whatever, I don’t care.”

What about your character? My chick just wants to feel f—ing valid, and she isn’t going to [feel valid] while doing the things she’s doing. And you’ve got Lily’s character, who just wants a friend. She has a crush on someone and doesn’t even know what the hell that even is. These people are f—ing lonely. And it’s f—ing painful. The character interactions are so complex and speak to this idea that we’ll never really know anyone. But I’d like to argue that acknowledging that we’ll always get

The Compton, California-based rapper’s second album, called “Still Brazy, dives into figuring out who shot him last year, gangster culture, anti-police brutality and his hatred of Donald Trump. How to make working from home work for you Social media personality Estee Lalonde shares her advice for staying productive and happy. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

YouTube star Estee Lalonde can educate, inspire and interact with her 1.1 million subscribers without ever leaving the comfort of her own home. Sounds like a dream setup, right? Usually. “My life is on the internet, it’s a digital life, she says. “It can get lonely just to be home all the time, at your desk, without much interaction. And when you do get interaction, it’s about work. It was hard for me to get used to that— just me in my living room or bed. It’s lonely. The 26-year-old Londoner has been filming YouTube beauty and lifestyle videos for her channel (formerly known as Essie Button) for the better half of this decade. Originally started as a way to combat homesickness (Lalonde moved from her native Waterloo, Ontario, to the U.K.) her following quickly grew as she shared her charmingly high-energy beauty tutorials, fitness journeys and DIYs with hundreds of thousands of fans. Her cult following amassed to such a number, Lalonde snagged a book deal with “Bloom,

Estee Lalonde her debut memoir out this month from Appetite by Random House. But how does she do it? Here Lalonde shares her advice for maintaining a work-life balance, when your work is ‌ well, your life.

says Lalonde, who typically works from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the weekdays with scattered hours over the weekend. “My boyfriend and I also have a rule that we have no laptops in the bedroom — that was the hardest to get used to. Eventually you’ll just get into the routine where you don’t need to be checking all the time.

Create a clean workspace — and maintain it “I’m at home pretty much every day, to be honest, unless I’m traveling, explains Lalonde, who can be typically found shooting videos in her bright, minimalistic workspace. “I always make sure my office is clean. If I have papers everywhere, it drives me insane. I keep it ready to be worked in. And even when your home is your office, the distractions can pile up — literally. “If there are loads of dishes in the a ssink, I get distracted, she confesses. “I think keepc ing everything tidy is so in important. im

I love being busy, I find it fascinating and I get a lot of fulfillment from it. But I’m trying to work toward having more personal time. I’m getting better at it.

The four-day work week Experts say restructured time could increase efficiency and health of workers. DANIEL CASILLAS Metro World News letters@metro.us

Many social organizations, renowned experts and even one of the richest men in the world, Carlos Slim, have voiced their enthusiasm for a shorter working week, with the aim of improving the lives of employees and boosting the economy. There are existing success stories to support the move to a shorter week —four 10-hour days — but many companies are still reluctant to reduce their employees’ hours. Experts, however, argue that a reduction in the working week — without a reduction in pay — can provide us with significant environmental, social, and economic benefits. “A shorter working

week could improve wellbeing, challenge gender inequalities, leave us with more time to spend with friends and family, more time to actively participate in our communities, and with more free time to spend doing the things we love,” Aidan Harper, assistant researcher at New Economics Foundation, explains. The shortening of the workweek, say experts,

could also help cities and even society in general by reducing traffic issues and energy consumption. “Our society will also benefit as a whole as office commuters and corresponding traffic will be reduced,” says Pramila Rao, associate professor of human resources at Marymount University. “This will significantly lower environmental pollution, especially in metropoli-

tan areas. Organizations can save on energy bills making the environment more green-friendly.” However, while there are many groups that support the idea of shortening the workweek and there are many arguments in favor, experts warn that four 10-hour days does not suit all businesses, and others say that it could cause health problems for workers, Allard Dembe, professor of public health at Ohio State University, recently wrote in the journal The Conversation about hidden hazards in “compressing” five working days into four, such as the health effects that can occur as a result of fatigue and stress that accumulate over a longerthan-normal working day. The professor adds that for employees who are already suffering from overwork, the additional burden of compressing five days into four could break the worker’s back.

Things we learned in the Patriots impressive win over Cincinnati

In Tom Brady’s actual return to New England, the quarterback shined — as did his reliable sidekick Rob Gronkowski. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Sunday’s 35-17 win by the Patriots over the Bengals was a Bill Belichick classic. The Pats head coach used the first half as not much more than a “feeling-out process,” and in the second half at Gillette Stadium the Pats looked like the Pats. The

strong finish enabled New England to move to 5-1 on the season. The Pats are on the road the next two weeks as they will face the Steelers in Pittsburgh next Sunday and will be at the Bills on Oct. 30. New England’s bye week is the weekend after the Buffalo game. Here are three things we learned in the Pats’ victory Sunday:

and 1Adjust advance

Tom Brady felt constant pressure in the first half as the offensive line reverted to 2015 form. Brady was rushed on throws in his first two drives and the offense

looked out of synch, only registering a Stephen Gostkowski 46-yard field goal in the first quarter. But as they typically do, the Patriots made key adjustments at halftime and came out on fire in the second half. Rob Gronkowski found the end zone for the first time in 2016, catching a four yard TD pass from Brady with five minutes left in the third to give the Pats a 19-14 advantage. James White, who also scored in the second quarter with a 15-yard TD reception, caught a four-yard TD pass from Brady with 2:58 left in the third to give the Pats a 25-14 lead. Brady ended up near-

flawless again, completing 29-of-35 passes for 376 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

2Dojobyour

The Patriots’ defense was again stout, allowing just 17 points to Cincy. The Bengals weren’t exactly the 2007 Patriots coming into Sunday’s game, averaging just 18.4 points per game, but New England’s effort on Sunday was admirable nonetheless. Dont’a Hightower ripped down Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton in the end zone with 7:05 left in the third as the Pats earned

a sack and safety. Hightower and Pats defensive end Jabaal Sheard also sacked Dalton on a big third down with just under four minutes left. Cincy’s Pro Bowl receiver AJ Green showed flashes of brilliance, but the Pats’ secondary did a decent job on him limiting him to 88 yard receiving on six catches. Green did not find the end zone.

3Get nasty

The Patriots were all business against Cincy, but had time to show a mean streak. When Brady came onto the Foxboro field for the

first time since his suspension, he did not even wait a second to motion to the standing and vocal crowd to quiet down. And in the fourth quarter, Gronkowski shredded the Bengals defense and let the Cincy players know about it - consistently talking trash to Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones and Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Gronkowski finished with a career-high 162 yards receiving on seven catches. LeGarrette Blount, who rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, also got into it with the Bengals defense at the end of the game.
