3 things you need to know DICAPRIO FOUNDATION WOULD RETURN GIFTS IF FROM MALAYSIAN FUND

1

Leonardo DiCaprio’s charitable foundation would return gifts or donations made to him or his ventures if they were found to have come from Malaysian wealth fund 1MDB, which is being investigated on money laundering allegations, his representatives said. In his first comment on the multinational probe into the fund, DiCaprio said he was cooperating with U.S. authorities to determine if money had come from questionable sources, according to the statement. In July a Hollywood production company was accused in a U.S. civil lawsuit of using $100 million that prosecutors said had been diverted from the 1MDB fund to finance DiCaprio’s 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.” REUTERS

RISING GASOLINE, RENTS PUSH US INFLATION HIGHER IN SEPTEMBER

2

U.S. consumer prices recorded their biggest gain in five months in September as the cost of gasoline and rents surged, pointing to a steady pickup of inflation that could keep the Federal Reserve on track to raise interest rates in December. The Labor Department said on Tuesday its Consumer Price Index increased 0.3 percent last month after rising 0.2 percent in August. In the 12 months through September, the CPI accelerated 1.5 percent, the biggest year-on-year increase since October 2014. The CPI rose 1.1 percent in the year to August. “The upward creep of prices weakens any argument against a rate increase in December,” said Anthony Karydakis, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak in New York. “The economy is close to full employment and prices are starting to respond to that reality.” REUTERS

RIGHTS GROUPS REQUEST US PROBE POLICE USE OF FACIAL RECOGNITION

3

Fifty civil rights groups signed a letter asking the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate police use of facial-recognition databases, arguing the technology disproportionately affects minorities and has minimal oversight. The request coincides with the release of a law school’s report concluding half of America’s adults have their images stored in at least one searchable facial-recognition database used by local, state and federal authorities and amid concern about law enforcement’s use of force against black men. Facial-recognition databases are used by police to help identify criminal suspects. They typically work by conducting searches of vast troves of known images, such as mug shots, and algorithmically comparing them with other images, such as those taken form a store’s surveillance cameras, that capture an unidentified person believed to be committing a crime. Clinton vs. Trump: What to look for in the final presidential debate The debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET. GARY KANE & AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Immigration, the Supreme Court and the economy are among the few designated talking points for the third and final presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. However, no one expects the matchup to adhere to the format. Viewers have watched the debates as they would a hockey game. They’re interested in who’s scoring points but prefer to see the gloves come off. The debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET in Las Vegas. Pundits have ranked the first two debates as the most derisive in the history of modern American politics. Since the last debate on Oct. 9, both candidates have faced a slate of unpleasant developments:

More hacked emails Wikileaks continued to provide Trump supporters ammunition. The Trump campaign suggested that the most recent release of Clinton’s emails uncovered a quid pro quo deal between the State Department and FBI. Campaign officials argue the emails show that an FBI official offered to look into the reclassification of some Clinton emails in exchange for the State Department’s help in boosting the number of FBI agents in Iraq.

Trump accusers Trump insists his vulgar comments about women captured in a 2005 videotape were nothing but “locker room talk.” He argued he never made unwanted sexual advances toward any women. His denials prompted several women to go public with accusations that Trump had groped, kissed or improperly touched them.

Rigged election Trump has stepped up his claims that the presidential election is “rigged” against him. A recent Trump posting on Twitter: “Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day.”

“SNL” Trump called for the cancelation of “Saturday Night Live” after the program ran another skit mocking his performance in the second debate. His tweet: “Watched ‘Saturday Night Live’ hit job on me. Time to retire the boring and unfunny show. Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!” The last debate’s unnerving side act — an emergency news conference called moments before the debate that assembled a crew of alleged Bill and Hillary Clinton abuse accusers — might be attempted again. Trump’s planted

distraction this time could be the mother of a man killed in the 2012 Benghazi attacks, Yahoo News reported. Pat Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, had given a speech at the Republican National Convention blasting Clinton and holding her responsible for her son’s death. Smith confirmed to Yahoo News that she will be attending the event and might be sitting in the front row. Trump’s strategy has worked only so far as to distract from the significant lead Clinton has opened up in a general poll (six-point lead) and in the key battleground states. A Washington Post study gives Clinton leads of 4 to 11 percentage points in New Hampshire, Virginia, Michigan, New Mexico, Colorado, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Georgia. Winning those states would put her comfortably ahead with a total of 304 electoral votes (270 needed to win the election).

One Vanderbilt to rise as NYC’s second tallest tower, breaks ground The tower will add 1.6 million square feet of modern office space to Midtown East.

Yesterday 6sqft brought you a time-lapse video showing an entire Midtown block being demolished to make way for the 1,401foot supertall One Vanderbilt. Now with a cleared site — plus $1.5 billion in construction financing secured — SL Green is ready to build anew, and this morning the developer held an official groundbreaking ceremony to mark the momentous occasion. Designed by the tall tower pros at Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects, One Vanderbilt will rise to become the secondtallest tower in NYC and the tallest tower in Midtown. However, unlike the city’s other skyscraper additions noted for their slim silhouettes, this tower will be a behemoth, occupying a full

block between Vanderbilt and Madison avenues and East 42nd and East 43rd streets; the site is also directly adjacent to Grand Central Terminal. According to SL Green, the tower will not only add 1.6 million

square feet of modern office space to Midtown East, but additionally host the city’s largest floor-to-ceiling windows (it is only 58 stories) and completely column-free floorplates. The project is also bringing with it

$220 million worth of infrastructure improvements, including direct subway access from the building, new transit entrances, retail space and public spaces. Given the scale and cost of the project

Mayor’s chopper ride from Brooklyn to Queens criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio’s reputation may be going into a tailspin again after reports surfaced about him taking a helicopter from Brooklyn to Queens on Friday to beat traffic. City Hall hasn’t revealed many details and denies that he was working out at the Park Slope YMCA before taking the ride. A representative said that he had “meetings he needed to attend,” according to the New York Daily News. The mayor choppered to a tech event in Long Island City where he was scheduled to speak.

When pressed by The New York Times on whether these meetings were personal or related to city business, spokesman Eric Phillips

decliined to elaborate. “I’m saying he had a series of meetings in Brooklyn, and I’m declining to make public the details of nonpublic

meetings,” he said. Phillips also told The New York Times that de Blasio’s helicopter trips are “infrequent,” and arranged by the mayor’s police detail. As a social media photo and video of the helicopter made the rounds, however, the ride sparked plenty of comments about the mayor — who has had a reputation for showing up late to scheduled appearances. Some went as far as calling it an abuse of power, while others understood his need to use the helicopter. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA

($3 billion total), One Vanderbilt is being pegged as the catalyst needed for Midtown East’s renaissance. Though located in the heart of Manhattan, outdated spaces have made it difficult to bring new

office and commercial tenants to the area. The hope is that the tower will inspire other building owners in the area to undertake renovations. Moreover, in August the city released their Midtown East rezoning proposal, a plan that could bring another 16 new towers to the area. “It’s gratifying to be breaking ground not just on this building, but on what it represents: a massive investment in our transit and pedestrian infrastructure, and a first step toward the future of East Midtown,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “When development is done carefully, collaboratively, and produces real investments in the public realm that improve the neighborhood, everyone wins.” Ground work on the site will continue into next year and construction on the tower itself is slated for the third quarter of 2017. The project is expected to wrap in 2020, and tenants will be allowed to move in once transit infrastructure is complete — a condition put in place by the city.

BRIEFS Retrial of Etan Patz’s accused killer could begin Wednesday The second trial of Pedro Hernandez in the May 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz could begin as soon as Wednesday, State Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley said. Hernandez’s 10-week trial in 2015 ended with a hung jury, in which jurors voted 11-1 to convict him after 18 days of deliberation. After a tip surfaced in 2012, Hernandez was arrested and confessed on videotape to killing Patz after luring him into the basement of the SoHo bodega where he worked by offering him a soda. Hernandez, a teenager at the time, said that he choked the boy and disposed of his body two blocks away. Patz’s remains were never found.

Hernandez’s lawyers said that he has mental issues, and he was diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder by a defense psychiatrist. Twelve jurors have been seated for the retrial, NY1 reported. The selection of six alternates began Tuesday. NIKKI M. MASCALI

SpareRoom CEO ‘speed dating’ for roommates for luxury West Village apartment Skills in “SpeedRoomating” may help you land a $1 a month Bleecker Street rental. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

They say you have seven seconds to make a first impression, so a few minutes is enough to find a roommate, right? SpareRoom CEO and founder Rupert Hunt announced earlier this month that he is looking for two roommates to share his luxury West Village apartment. Part of the process includes “SpeedRoommating” on Wednesday as he searches for flat mates. SpeedRoomating is SpareRoom’s version of speed dating, except instead of a sloppy good night kiss, you could end up with a roommate or a room. From 7 to 9 p.m. at The Winslow, Hunt will sit down and get to know people who are interested in paying $1 a month to live in his Bleecker Street apartment “When I first started sharing [an apartment], I

If you aren’t one of the 6,000 applicants interested in Hunt’s apartment, you still have time to put your name in the hat (and maybe your name on the lease). Hunt has also invited some of the applicants to the event so he can meet

with them face-to-face. A spokesman for SpareRoom described the event as “a very casual setting at the bar where people can easily speak to anyone.” So bring ID. “I’m not after roommates who just want cheap rent,” Hunt wrote in the apartment listing. “You’ll need to genuinely want to share with me – for your benefit as much as mine. BRIEFS 40 dead cats found frozen in Queens storage unit The winner of an auctioned storage unit in Queens bought into an unpleasant discovery: dozens of cat carcasses. About 40 dead cats were found in two freezers in the unit, authorities said. Police told CBS New York that the number of dead cats could increase because some felines were stuck together. Some carcasses were wrapped in paper and plastic bags. Others were stacked on top of each other. One skinned cat was found in an aluminum catering tray. The ASPCA took custody of the cats, but is waiting for the bodies to thaw before performing tests to determine how the felines died, according to the New York Daily News.

The man who won the auction paid $150 for the storage locker at American Self Storage in Long Island City. He called police after opening the freezers. The unit had a “horrendous death smell, rotting” once the freezers were opened, a police source told the Daily News. The source said officers had to change their clothing and shower because “the stench was stuck to their clothes.” Other items, including papers, clothing and sewing machines were also found in the unit. A 66-year-old Brooklyn woman had been renting the unit since 2014, ABC7 reported, but she stopped paying in July, so the unit went up for auction. Authorities said they will wait until necropsies are completed to determine if they

will press charges against the woman. ALEXIS SACHDEV

New York City college student died fighting for Islamic State: U.S. A New York City college student died last November fighting for Islamic State in Syria, where he had traveled earlier in the year with the assistance of an Arizona man he met online, according to U.S. prosecutors. The death of Samy Mohammed El-Goarany, who was 24 when he traveled to Syria, was disclosed in papers filed by prosecutors late on Monday in Manhattan federal court in a case against the Arizona man, Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal. The details came as prosecutors sought approval to introduce evidence at the Dec. 5 trial of El Gammal, who is charged with conspiring to provide material support to Islamic State by helping El-Goarany travel so he could join the militant group. The potential evidence includes a letter by ElGoarany that an unidentified person via an instant messaging platform provided one of El-Goarany’s relatives after saying he had been killed fighting in Syria. In the letter, El-Goarany informed the relative that “if you’re reading this then know that I’ve been killed in battle and am now with our Lord InshaAllah.” “We will win this war

one day, this war between Iman (Belief) and kufr (Disbelief) between Good and Evil,” the letter said, according to prosecutors. “And I will come back for you, with Allah’s permission I will come back for you.” El Gammal’s lawyer declined comment. He has pleaded not guilty. According to prosecutors, El-Goarany was a U.S. citizen who attended college in Manhattan and who by 2014 began expressing increased interest in militant forms of Islam. El-Goarany first contacted El Gammal in August 2014 after learning of online comments he posted supporting Islamic State, prosecutors said. They corresponded via encrypted messaging platforms, including one El-Goarany recommended by noting former National Security Agency contractor-turned-whistleblower Edward Snowden had used it, prosecutors said. Review of New York Times’ wedding announcements shows common threads A Manhattan wedding sounds glamorous and romantic, but did you know most couples who wed in the city do so at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau. Looking for love? If you’re in your 30s, your name is Elizabeth or Michael and you’re a law associate who graduated from Harvard, love is right around the corner … or your announcement in The New York Times’ wedding section is imminent. Sapio, a free dating app, conducted a study by combing through wedding announcements published in The New York Times from Jan. 4, 2015 to July 3, 2016. The study isn’t necessarily

an indicator of love in the city, as the Times’ wedding section typically features the wealthy, wellknown or prominent in some way. “No one moves to New York to find love,” Erika Kaplan, a matchmaker with Three Day Rule, told Thrillist in June. “Men and women

both move here for careers over relationships,” she added. “They take education seriously. They are responsible, smart, confident and they want to be sure of who they are and where they are going before they pick a mate.” Maybe that’s why Sapio found that more brides and grooms are waiting until after the national average age to wed with brides holding off until age 32 and grooms waiting until they turn 34. Yahoo profit beats Wall St., some analysts worry over effect of hack Tuesday’s results provided at least an initial indication that the data breach has not led to a quick exodus of Yahoo customers, as some had feared. Customer trends showed growth in pageviews and email usage, Yahoo said. Yahoo Inc. reported better-than-expected quarterly adjusted profit on Tuesday, a boost for the beleaguered company whose deal to sell its core business to Verizon Communications Inc has been shaken by a massive data breach. Verizon’s general counsel said last week that the hack, which affected at least 500 million email accounts in 2014, could have a material impact, possibly allowing

Verizon to withdraw from the $4.83 billion deal. Still, analysts were split on whether the results dispelled doubts about the deal going through. Yahoo said in a filing with securities regulators shortly before the breach was disclosed that it knew of no cyber risks, raising questions about whether Verizon was informed of the breach in a timely fashion. JMP Securities analyst Ronald Josey said it was too early to tell if the breach would cause lasting damage, and called customer trends “encouraging.” “The message here is email and messaging is a very sticky product and people want to get to their messages,” said Josey. But Fatemeh Khatibloo, a security analyst with Forrester Research, said the uptick in pageviews and email usage

could be the result of “500 million people trying to figure out if they’re exposed.” Any loss of users in the future, lawsuits related to the breach and a pending Federal Communications Commission vote that could limit how telecommunications companies can use customer data may encourage Verizon to try and back out of the deal, said Khatibloo. However, Scott Kessler, an analyst with CFRA Research, said the fact that Yahoo did not see an immediate decline in users was a sign the breach may not be a material adverse change that would affect the Verizon deal. “The bottom line here is from a fundamental operational and financial perspective, it doesn’t seem like much has changed at the company over the last quarter,” he said. Legal experts have

said Verizon would have to clear a high hurdle to prove that the breach amounted to a material adverse change that would allow it to pull out of the deal. REUTERS

Ex-sports marketing executive to plead guilty in FIFA bribe case A former sports marketing executive who was arrested last year in a U.S. corruption probe involving soccer’s global governing body FIFA is scheduled to plead guilty on Thursday, according to a court filing. The plea by Aaron Davidson, who headed the Miami-based unit of Brazilian sports marketing firm Traffic Group, was disclosed in a scheduling order filed in federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday. A lawyer for Davidson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Davidson was first charged in May 2015. He is one of 42 individuals and entities charged as part of a U.S. investigation that upended Zurich-based FIFA and the soccer world. Prosecutors have alleged the defendants engaged in schemes involving more than $200 million in bribes and kick-

backs that were sought and received by soccer officials for marketing and broadcasting rights to tournaments and matches. Prosecutors accused Davidson of participating in schemes to bribe soccer officials to secure millions of dollars in sports marketing contracts for Traffic. In total, 17 people and two companies have pleaded guilty, including the owner of Traffic, Brazilian José Hawilla. Davidson had been among seven defendants who meanwhile were set to face trial in November 2017. Prosecutors are continuing to seek the extradition of some of the other foreign defendants. Earlier on Tuesday, an Argentine judge denied a U.S. request to extradite father-and-son sports marketing team Hugo and Mariano Jinkis and former regional soccer chief Eduardo Deluca. REUTERS

Islamic State said to use human shields as coalition advances on Mosul

P.A.D.

Raises Your Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

People over age of 50 that have a history of diabetes or smoking and other peripheral artery disease risk factors, such as obesity or high blood pressure, have a greater risk of having PAD.

The leader of Islamic State was reported to be among thousands of hardline militants still in the city, suggesting the group would go to great lengths to repel the coalition. Residents of Mosul said Islamic State was using civilians as human shields as Iraqi and Kurdish forces captured outlying villages in their advance on the jihadists’ stronghold. The leader of Islamic State was reported to be among thousands of hardline militants still in the city, suggesting the group would go to great lengths to repel the coalition. With attacking forces still between 12 and 30 miles away, residents reached by telephone said more than 100 families had started moving from southern and eastern suburbs most exposed to the offensive to more central parts of the city. Islamic State militants were preventing people fleeing Mosul, they said, and one said they directed some towards buildings they had recently used themselves. “It’s quite clear Daesh [Islamic State] has started

to use civilians as human shields by allowing families to stay in buildings likely to be targeted by air strikes,” said Abu Mahir, who lives near the city’s university. Like other residents contacted in the city, he refused to give his full name, but Abdul Rahman Waggaa, a member of the exiled Provincial Council of Nineveh of which Mosul is the capital, corroborated his account to Reuters. The fall of Mosul would signal the defeat of the ultra-hardline Sunni jihadists in Iraq but could also lead to land grabs and sectarian bloodletting between groups which fought one another after the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein. In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters that it was known that civilians were being used as human shields. “This has been going on for several weeks

where we’ve seen civilians being forcibly detained and their movements being prevented where they can’t get out of Mosul. They are being held there against their will,” he told reporters. Davis described the operation to retake Mosul as “an ugly fight”, adding: “But I will tell you we’ve seen very good progress. It’s day one, don’t get your hopes up, it’s going to be a while.” Around 1.5 million people still live in Mosul and the International Organization for Migration said Islamic State may use tens of thousands of residents as human shields to hold onto their last city stronghold in Iraq. The IOM said there was a likelihood of chemical attacks by the jihadists, who had used such weapons previously against Iraqi Kurdish forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said safe routes had been secured for civilians who wanted to leave Mosul and it was the duty of the U.S.-led coalition to prevent Islamic State fighters from escaping into nearby Syria. The Syrian army, meanwhile, accused the coalition of planning to allow Islamic State militants to flee across the border. REUTERS

An Iranian court has sentenced an IranianAmerican businessman and his elderly father to 10 years in prison on charges of cooperating with the United States, Iranian media reported on Tuesday, the latest sign of an intensifying crackdown against Iranians with ties to the West. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in October 2015 detained Siamak Namazi, a businessman in his mid-40s with dual U.S.-Iranian citizenship, while he was visiting family in Tehran. The IRGC in February arrested his 80-year-old father, Baquer Namazi, a former Iranian provincial gover-

Both men were sentenced to 10 years in prison for spying and cooperating with the U.S. government, said Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, according to the Fars news website, without specifying when exactly the sentences had been handed down. The U.S. State Department’s deputy spokesman, Mark Toner, said the father and son had been “unjustly detained in Iran, and called for their immediate release. The sentences were the latest against dual nationals directed by hardliners who are powerful in Iran’s judiciary and security forces, in the aftermath of Iran’s historic nuclear deal with the United States and other world powers last year. White House seeks to answer complaints of aggrieved air travelers The effort is aimed at responding to complaints from consumers that range from delayed or damaged baggage and wheelchairs to pricey add-ons like payments for seat assignments. The White House announced efforts on Tuesday to improve air travel for Americans by requiring airlines to refund baggage handling fees if luggage is delayed and requiring online travel agents to provide neutral search results. The effort is aimed at responding to complaints from consumers that range from delayed or damaged baggage and

wheelchairs to pricey addons like payments for seat assignments. “The actions we’re announcing today will help consumers know how airlines are performing, will make sure that consumers don’t have to pay for services they don’t receive and will help consumers find the best flight options for them, Jason Furman, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers told reporters. As part of that effort, the Transportation Department issued an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking which would require airlines to refund baggage fees if luggage is “substantially delayed. The department did not define a substantial delay. The Transportation Department also released new final rules that would

require airlines and online ticket agents to ensure that their search results are neutral, without favoring certain airlines. The new final rules would also require big U.S. airlines to report how often they lose or damage wheelchairs. They also changed the methodology for counting mishandled bags to compare lost, stolen, damaged or delayed bags against the total number of bags handled to make it more accurate, the White House said. REUTERS

Former Virginia dean accuses Rolling Stone of defamation in trial An attorney for a former associate dean of students at the University of Virginia accused Rolling Stone magazine of defaming her in a retracted 2014 story about an alleged gang rape on campus in the first day of a federal court trial. Nicole Eramo, who is seeking $7.9 million in damages, has accused the magazine of painting her as the villain in a story of a freshman named only as “Jackie” who described being sexually assaulted by seven men during a fraternity party. “This case is about a journalistic failure. It’s not about rape or sexual assault,” Eramo’s attorney, Thomas Clare, said in opening statements in federal court in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The story, “A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA,” set off a firestorm of protests and debate about rape on college campuses, but an investigation by the Charlottesville police found that the attack described never actually occurred. Rolling Stone retracted the article in April 2015, in an embarrassing blow to the magazine founded by Jann Wenner in 1967. Clare accused Rolling Stone of not checking its

facts and publishing even when it had questions about the reliability of the primary source of the rape account. Eramo, who now works in an administrative role at the school, testified on Tuesday that Rolling Stone had reported she told Jackie that it was hard to find statistics on the prevalence of sex assault at the school because “nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school.” Eramo denied having said that and said no one at the magazine contacted her to ask. She also said that before the article’s publication, Jackie had expressed concerns that it would contain inaccuracies and that her efforts to correct them had been unsuccessful. REUTERS

An unmanned Antares rocket owned by Orbital ATK Inc. blasted off from Virginia on Monday night with a cargo ship for the International Space Station, marking the booster’s return to flight two years after a previous version exploded at liftoff. The 14-story-tall rocket, powered by a pair of new Russian-made engines, lifted off from Wallops Island, Virginia, at 7:45 p.m. Eastern, a NASA TV broadcast showed. Launch was delayed five minutes to give the team extra time to review their checklists, Orbital President Frank Culbertson told reporters. “It’s such a feeling of elation to see the vehicle take off. … I’m very happy to see Antares back,” said Amanda Davis, Orbital’s director of program engineering. The rocket carried a Cygnus capsule loaded with 5,290 pounds of food, supplies, equipment and science experiments for the space station, a $100-billion laboratory in orbit about 250 miles above Earth. The capsule is expected to reach the station on Sunday after lingering several days in orbit to allow time for a Russian Soyuz capsule carrying three new crew members to reach the outpost on Friday. The Soyuz is slated to launch Wednesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The last Antares launch, on Oct. 28, 2014, ended in disaster a few

seconds after liftoff due to a problem with the booster’s refurbished, Soviet-era engines. After the accident, Orbital sped up plans to replace the motors. During the downtime, Orbital bought rides for two Cygnus cargo ships aboard Atlas rockets, built and flown by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co. Orbital conducted a 30-second engine test firing of the Antares at the Virginia launch pad on May 31, but had never flown the refurbished rocket before Monday night. The mission became more crucial for the U.S. space agency after a Sept. 1 accident destroyed a Falcon 9 rocket operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and a $200 million Israeli communications satellite. The accident, which occurred while the rocket was being fueled for a routine prelaunch test, has temporarily grounded SpaceX, the only company apart from Orbital currently contracted by NASA to fly cargo to the space station. Private contractors for the cargo runs became necessary following the retirement of the space shuttles in 2011. With SpaceX sidelined, NASA said it added extra food, clothing, laptop computers and spacesuit parts to the Cygnus cargo list. REUTERS

Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer split Let’s officially declare this the year that love died. Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer are calling it quits after nine years of marriage. The “Great Gatsby” actor and celeb jewelry designer met and began dating in 2003 and wed four years later — a classy, tried-and-true courtship by Hollywood standards, if we do say so ourselves. Maguire and Meyer have two children together, 9-year-old Ruby and 7-year-old Otis. But we guess the saying is true: Nothing lasts forever. The couple released a joint statement to People, which broke the news of their separation, “After much soulsearching and consideration, we have made the decision to separate as a couple. As devoted

They love the ’90s Sarah Paulson and Mark Duplass talk “Blue Jay” and crying to The Gin Blossoms. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

In the indie dramedy “Blue Jay,” Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson have great chemistry as Jim and Amanda, high school sweethearts who reconnect some two decades later. And the actors have great chemistry in person, too. They’re prone to joke around, interrupt each other and — because the movie is steeped in jokey ’90s nostalgia — sing. They manage to break out

Barenaked Ladies, Shawn Colvin and Extreme, in between talking about the fun — and sad — aspects of their new film. I feel like we could spend this entire interview reminiscing about the ’90s. I used to listen to Bush. Mark Duplass: If you go to the early- to mid-’90s, you find me at Lilith Fair, grooving to Shawn Colvin. Sarah Paulson: She’s my favorite ever. She’s really, really a genius. I think she’s the Joni Mitchell of [her day]. I drove to some tiny town in Pennsylvania, and it was rained out. And she came out and played for those of us who stayed, because everyone left. Duplass: The other night my friend Julian [Wass], who did the music for “Blue Jay,”

we jammed together over our melancholy and just over-sensitivity to life in general. We put on Gin Blossoms and listened to “Hey Jealousy,” and really felt that song. The guy who wrote it ended up committing suicide. What’s so amazing is it’s covered in grungy guitars and it’s upbeat, but then you listen to the lyrics and go, “Oh, my God …” It says, “All I really want is to be with you, feeling like I matter, too.” We just drove around and cried listening to The Gin Blossoms. So you can see where “Blue Jay” may have come from. [Laughs] The movie is sad but also very funny. Or rather, the characters laugh about things that eat them up inside, almost like a defense mechanism. Duplass: When you watch it theatrically, I think it plays more

funny. If you’re at home, snuggled up with some Thai food and wine and someone you love, it plays a little more like a drama. That’s not dissimilar from some of my movies: Some of the comedy is awkward and you almost need permission to laugh from other people. But Sarah and I

see at least some of the elements of the world in the same way: We see darkness, we see sadness; we’re able to cry with it but then giggle about it the same time. I wanted to ask about the improvisation, especially since, Sarah, you haven’t done it as much

as Mark has. Paulson: It was scary. I like a script. I like to be able to hold onto what I learn about a character on page 24, then apply that to page 76. I like coming to an end point, to know what the journey is. It makes me feel secure. This was just flapping in the breeze.

Like a love story Rumer Willis will explore the complexities of love for her fulllength music debut. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

Did it start last year with a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in “Chicago”? Or did it begin two years ago with a weekly residency, singing at The Sayers Club in Hollywood? According to Rumer Willis, who has done all those things and more, she started singing about 28 years ago. “Goodness,” Willis sighs from her Los Angeles home. “I feel like I’ve been singing since I came out of the womb. It’s just

always been there. It’s just something I always did.” It’s five days before her first national tour begins, and there’s no sign of nerves about stepping further into the world of being a singer. “I’m more excited than nervous,” Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s oldest daughter says calmly. “I’m excited about coming to all the different cities and getting to meet all the people who come to the shows. It’s an interesting job I have,” she adds. “I’m lucky being able to do both acting and singing at the same time.” Of course, she also dances, and won Season 20 of “Dancing with the Stars.” Amid all this, she’s managed to set aside time to begin recording her debut album with lauded music vet,

producer Linda Perry. “It’s still too early on in the process to tell how it will turn out,” Willis says. “It’s not even close to being done, but I would hope it comes out sometime in 2017.” Along with playing covers — mostly jazz and pop standards — Willis will mix in some of her

own songs into her set on what she’s calling her Over the Love Tour. But only those that fit her theme. “I wanted the songs that felt like they spoke to the story that I wanted to tell. I want to tell a story of something that everybody struggles with and one that is not prejudiced, and

doesn’t depend on where you work or where you live — and that story is love. We all experience it,” she says. “We’ve all been broken-hearted and then there is the other side of that. There are two sides of the coin that make up this story I want to tell.” Being the storyteller means standing center

stage, fronting her threepiece band. But Willis has handled the spotlight for some, well, 28 years. “You can try and fight or hide away and you get nowhere,” she says of paparazzi glare. “You can’t have complete control over your life, but you can choose how much you let it affect you.”

New Bushwick restaurant serves ramen for introverts They call it “low-interaction dining.” KATE MOONEY @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

If you love ramen and hate people, be sure to schedule yourself a solo lunch date today in Bushwick! That’s when famed Japanese chain Ichiran opens its first location in the Western hemisphere at 374 Johnson St. in Bushwick, offering an eating environment that will make hungry introverts of New York rejoice. Described as “low-interaction dining,” the restaurant is set up to minimize your dealings with humans every step of the meal. According to the press release, which is eight pages long and does not skimp on the details (we hope the serving sizes at the restaurant are as generous), you seat yourself, referencing an electronic seating chart on the wall that lights

up to indicate when a table becomes available. Once seated, you fill out a paper menu and then press a button to signal a server to come and retrieve it. When your food is ready, a human, whose face is obstructed by a bamboo curtain so you’ll only see “a section of torso” instead of some mug (because looking at people is the worst, right?) will pass the dish to you across the counter. Needless to say, it’s a no-tipping joint. Here’s where it really gets good: If you so desire, you can eat solo in one of the Flavor Concentration Booths, described as “partitioned counter seating that encourages guests to dine alone and focus solely on the bowl of noodles in front of them.” Based on the photos, they look reminiscent of the library carrel where you might have inked in bubbles on your SAT. There are some perks. You know how sometimes you finish all your

noodles and you still have broth left? At Ichiran, you can order a noodle refill, called a kae-dama. You’re given a metal plate that you place on a sensor halfway through finishing your first round of noodles. The sensor then triggers a melody to let your server know it’s time for round two. (Sing for your noodles!) We should mention, the isolation is optional. If you’re feeling friendly, you can eat in the open dining room, where you’ll be served by waiters with visible faces, at communal tables meant to evoke the atmosphere of yatai — food carts paired with outdoor tables in cities throughout Japan. Depending on your perspective, a meal at

Devote your full attention to your bowl of ramen in one of Ichiran’s Flavor Concentration Booths.

Ichiran might sound like a mini silent lunch retreat, just the thing you need to break up the work day, space out and nourish yourself with ramen, the most life-giving of foodstuffs. Or, alternately, it might be an unnecessary

New Yorkers normally hear the word stairs and think walk-up. There’s a reason that five-floor walk-ups are cheaper — between groceries, strollers and just being tired at the end of the workday — most city dwellers would prefer to live in an elevator building and join a gym for their daily exercise. But in these three NYC homes, the stairs could actually draw in buyers.

228 W. 21st St., 8 $2,495,000 The staircase in this Chelsea duplex leads to a third en-suite bedroom with a large walk-in closet and access to front and back terraces. But it’s the actual stairs that may get buyers’ attention. The contemporary spiral staircase is currently painted red on the outside with black stairs that are a bright contrast to the downstairs’ white walls and pine floors.

$7,995,000 This Tribeca town home offers four levels in 3,700 square feet, plus a large private garden. The three-bedroom, three-bath house has a modern feel that is apparent right away in its open plan kitchen and living room. But the custom staircase anchors this contemporary feel with its design that matches the kitchen’s light wood and stainless steel details.

320 W. 80th St. $9,985,000 With five stories and 6,565 square feet of space, this Upper West Side townhouse needs both an elevator and staircase. The six-bedroom, five-and-a-halfbathroom home is in the Elizabethan Renaissance Revival style, and maintains many of its original details. They include eight carved fireplaces, wood paneling, pocket doors, hardwood floors and high beamed ceilings. A entry foyer also showcases the historic 1899 residence, with the original wooden staircase as the centerpiece.

Pottery Barn has been killing it with its recent designer collaborations — we’re still obsessed with our Emily & Meritt gold polka dot sheets — but this time the home-furnishings brand knocked it out the park. For its first global collaboration, Pottery Barn teamed up with one of India’s biggest fashion designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, to bring his bohemian spirit to home decor. A Bollywood favorite, Mukherjee is known for gorgeous creations that blend traditional techniques with modern romance: bold florals, gold

NOW IS THE TIME TO WIN THE WAIVER WIRE BILL DUBIEL OPINION Bill Dubiel is a fantasy football expert for Rotoballer.com.

Now is the time to make an impact on the waiver wire. Snagging players now can make your season down the road. Be sure to check out Rotoballer.com’s Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Tool for up-to-the-hour waiver wire advice and ideas, and to follow me @Roto_Dubs for quick-hitting news and analysis.

Keenum and Kenny primed for giant fantasy day While many would laugh at the idea, there is actually some fantasy value to be found in the Los Angeles Rams passing game. Veteran wide receiver Kenny Britt has been downright usable

in all formats in almost every game this season. He has at least four catches in every game this season, is on pace for over 1,300 receiving yards, and is coming off a huge two-touchdown game in which his quarterback (Case Keenum) looked terrific. Britt is now an every-week WR3 and can be rostered in all formats for depth.

Get Jacked up for Doyle in Week 7 Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle should be in for a huge week with fellow tight end Dwayne Allen likely out with an ankle injury. Allen left early in the Colts’ Week 6 matchup, leaving Doyle as the primary tight end, and he didn’t disappoint — he

posted 53 yards and a touchdown on four catches. While he’s been hit-or-miss in 2016, with Allen out there is a ton of upside for Doyle, as he should be an integral part of the Indianapolis attack against Tennessee.

Robinson stranded in lackluster

Jacksonville offense While Allen Robinson is, without a doubt, one of the best deep-ball receivers in the NFL, his lack of volume in 2016 has many fantasy owners worried. He hasn’t yet posted a game with more than 72 receiving yards, and has had no more

than seven catches in any single game. Robinson has found the end zone thrice, but when he hasn’t scored a touchdown he’s been a severely disappointing fantasy asset. It’s fair to blame the dynamic wideout’s woes on Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles, who has struggled in the early goings with nine turnovers in just five games.

Two games, 782 yards, six touchdowns and a 135.5 QB rating. Sorry haters, but Tom Brady is still on pace for 4,692 yards and 36 TDs this season. And he hasn’t turned it over yet either.

They didn’t get the win in Seattle, but they keep answering questions. They didn’t stick with the run game like in Denver, but three Matt Ryan TD passes in the third quarter got the Falcons back in it.

LeSean McCoy had his best game of the season against the coach who decided he was superfluous, and is averaging 118 rushing yards per game during the Bills’ four-game win streak.

After Atlanta showed the world the Broncos defense was mortal in Week 5, they actually did one of the best jobs this season against Philip Rivers and the Chargers despite a Week 6 loss.

Not much went wrong for Washington against Philadelphia. Their dregs-ofthe-league run defense shut Philadelphia down (as did their pass defense) and Matt Jones had 135 yards on the ground.

Russell Wilson’s astounding 20th career fourth quarter/OT comeback came just five games into his fifth NFL season. Then consider the fact that he’s doing it without his legs (7 yards on six carries).

Heading into their bye, we’re finally ready to give the Cowboys the respect they deserve. Hammering Cincy at home and hammering Green Bay at Lambeau just takes it a step further than picking on the Niners.

They lost Big Ben and laid their second egg of the season in Miami. It might be harder for them to go on the redemption tour of terror than it was after losing to the Eagles: The Pats are in Pittsburgh this week.

The defense wanted redemption for its performance in Pittsburgh, and one can only imagine their bye week: Running Dontari Poe screen passes, because why would you want to imagine anything else?

CARMELO STILL THE MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER ON KNICKS OPINION

MARC MALUSIS @marcmalusis

Who doesn’t enjoy a good player ranking? Growing up, I used to crack open the old Baseball Encyclopedia and would compare baseball players from decades before to the players that I was

watching then. Who was a better hitter? Who was the best clutch hitter? Those discussions would go on and on. Those were good days. So, I found it interesting when Slam magazine came out with their latest player rankings and had Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony ranked No. 15 in the NBA. We can debate where Anthony falls in reference to the other stars of the NBA. It certainly grabbed the attention

of Anthony, as he sent out an Instagram post in reaction to his ranking and said “don’t play yaself.â€? Good for Carmelo, and that means good for the Knicks. Let me explain. ing his only season of college basketball. He played in four Olympics, representing the United States. He won a bronze in 2004 and gold medals in ’08, ’12 and 2016, and he was routinely criticized this past summer when he compared winning a gold medal to winning an NBA title. Anthony added that even if he did not win an NBA title, because of his Olympic success he would have had a great career. I don’t agree with that take necessarily. I do think players, elite players, are judged by team success on the NBA level and ultimately how you are able to make your team better. With that being said, Anthony played a great team game a season ago with the Knicks. He played 72 games and he led the Knicks in three big statistical categories as he averaged 21.8

points per game, 7.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He played much better defense as his eorts on both sides of the oor were perfectly clear. Now, with that being said, the Knicks went 32-50 and were largely irrelevant. The only times the Knicks ashed was when star rookie Kristaps Porzingis made some jaw-dropping play that showed his potential for future stardom. This is a new year, though, and Anthony has some new teammates in Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Courtney Lee and Brandon Jennings. There are expectations this season for playo relevance for the Knicks. So, for Anthony, he is a 32-year-old aging superstar who is looking to win here in New York. If he uses the Slam magazine rankings as a little bit of motivation to get him going

that is a good thing for Knicks fans. That means we all should be treated to a stellar season by Anthony, which is a good thing. Yes, Anthony wanted the big money and he wanted New York many years ago, and he can’t always just lean on what he did at Syracuse or in the Olympics in order to justify his standing as an NBA superstar. He let his actions speak for him in those instances and he must start to do that on the NBA level as well. Slam might have him ranked as the 15th best player in the NBA in 2016. He is not the most talented player on the Knicks this season, but he is the most important. He must let his actions and his performance drive the conversation. If this conversation helps drive him, then that would mean good things for the Knicks organization in 2016.
