3 things you need to know LANDER MAKES RISKY TOUCH DOWN ON MARS

1

The search for life on Mars took a giant leap on Wednesday when a space lander touched down on the red planet in Europe’s first attempt to land a craft there since the Beagle 2’s “heroic failure” more than a decade ago. The discshaped 1,272-pound Schiaparelli lander, which is testing technologies for a rover due to follow in 2020, landed on Mars after a risky descent, but scientists are still waiting to find out what shape it is in. During the six-minute descent to the surface, it used a parachute and thrusters to slow from a speed of nearly 21,000 mph to 13,000 mph “We have to wait a to see what happens with the test lander. But this is already a success so far,” European Space Agency Director General Jan Woerner said at ESA’s Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. The lander is named for Giovanni Schiaparelli, the Italian astronomer who in 1877 began mapping the topography of Mars, extending study of what are now known as the planet’s canals, a mistranslation of the Italian word canali, or channels. US GOVERNMENT SEES 1M MORE PEOPLE ON OBAMACARE EXCHANGES IN 2017

2

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department estimates that one million more people will sign up for health insurance on the Obamacare exchanges for 2017 compared with 2016, a department official said. President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, created online exchanges where consumers can shop for individual health insurance and receive income-based subsidies. The exchanges opened in 2014 with insurance for sale by major companies including Aetna Inc. and Anthem Inc. But enrollment has been about half of what was initially expected and some large insurers this year have said they were losing too much money on the exchanges because of that and the fact that enrollees are older and sicker than expected. Aetna and United Health Group have largely pulled out of the exchanges for 2017. REUTERS

FACEBOOK ADDS FOOD ORDERING FEATURE

Facebook said users in the United States would be able to order food through the Facebook pages of restaurants starting on Wednesday as part of its efforts to connect users and businesses. Users will also be able to get quotes from businesses, buy movie tickets and book appointments at spas and salons, Facebook said in a blog post. Earlier this month, Facebook launched “Marketplace,” a platform that allows people to buy and sell items locally. Facebook, which has about 1.7 billion monthly active users, also said it would add a “recommendations” feature that will allow users to share recommendations on such things as places to eat. Facebook shares were up 0.8 percent at $129.58 in early trading. Shares of GrubHub, which offers a food-ordering service similar to that announced by Facebook, were down 2.4 percent at $41.07. City Council supports strike by Harvard dining hall staff Members of Local 26 were in the chambers when city councilors passed a resolution to stand behind the strike. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Harvard dining hall workers have entered the third week of their historic strike and on Wednesday won the unanimous support of the Boston City Council. Council President Michelle Wu introduced a resolution to support the 750 dining hall workers who have been striking for better conditions. Members of UNITE HERE Local 26 applauded and cheered in the city council chambers as council members stood up to voice their support. “Shame on you, Harvard,” City Councilor Tito Jackson said, “for raising $7 billion on your endowment, of $37.6 billion—10 times the budget of our city council— but you can’t take care of your workers.” Dining service workers have been on strike since Oct. 5 and seek better pay to cover their unemployed summer months. They also are calling for a reassess-

ment of their health care coverage so that costs are not shifted onto the employees. Council members said they intend to join the dining workers’ picket lines on campus and forward a copy of the resolution to Harvard University’s management. “This is an issue that is very personal for me,” Wu said. “When I arrived at Harvard as a college freshman — the first time I was away from my family for any extended period of time — the dining hall workers truly became my family away from home. They’re the faces you see every day, checking in on you to make sure you’re eating well and getting enough sleep. They really become like your moms

and dads.” Local 26 President Brian Lang said after the meeting that the dining hall workers appreciated hearing that personal acknowledgment from Wu. “The workers really care about the students and I’ve heard them voice daily, ‘We want to get back to taking care of our students,” he said. Many of the council members brought up the disparity between these dining hall employees asking for a $35,000 salary and the current expansive Harvard University endowment. City Councilor Josh Zakim said that he was particularly struck by the number dining workers are asking for during Wu’s initial comments. “That’s one-one millionth of Harvard’s en-

dowment. We’re talking about the richest institution,” he said. “They do a lot of good, but they’re not doing good today. They’re not treating their workers right.” While the endowment is large, Harvard officials say that those funds are largely restricted for “specific academic purposes.” “These funds are also only one part of Harvard’s financial picture,” Tania deLuzuriaga, a spokeswoman for the university, said in an email. “At a time when institutions across higher education are anticipating challenging endowment returns, continuing pressure on tuition revenue and federal research support, Harvard is sensitive to increasing costs.” Harvard says that their dining hall employees currently earn an average of $21.89 per hour — a nationally competitive compensation — along with top market benefits like pensions and health insurance. Dining hall workers counter that because they aren’t given yearround work and often can’t find employment for only the summer months, their income actually equals year-long workers who are paid $15.96 an hour. Study: Hockey fans pay higher rents to live near NHL arenas Hockey fans are notorious die-hards, so it wouldn’t be surprising if some want to live as close as possible to their favorite team’s home ice. While their passion might be admirable, it can also be costly as rents near sports venues can be nearly 70 percent higher than a city’s average, a new study from RENTCafé found. Boston Bruins fans can expect to pay 9 percent more in rent than the typical city resident

to live near TD Gardens, while New Yorkers can expect to pay 7 percent more to be an Islanders neighbor near Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and 5 percent more to be near the Rangers and Madison Square Garden. Philadelphia Flyers fans living near the Wells Fargo Center, however, actually pay $7 less than the average Philly rent. BRIEFS Registered sex oender charged with raping teen in cemetery A registered sex oender is being held on $1 million bail and faces charges accusing him of raping a 14-year-old girl in a cemetery. Charles P. Lovejoy, 31, of Lowell, was arrested Monday after oďŹƒcers said his car was seen leaving a cemetery in Whitman just after 1:30 a.m.

Police ran the plate, discovered that Lovejoy was a registered sex oender and pulled him over for suspicious behavior. It was then that they found the teenager in the car, police said. OďŹƒcers said they determined Lovejoy met the girl on a messaging app, picked her up from a neighboring town and drove her to the cemetery, where he sexually

assaulted her. Lovejoy was wearing a GPS monitoring device at the time of his arrest, according to police. They also seized two cellphones in his possession. Lovejoy was charged with aggravated rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over and enticement of a child for sex under the age of 16. He served two years in prison

A year after Gov. Charlie Baker tabled the expansion of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Massachusetts Port Authority’s once scaled-back plans for a large nearby hotel are moving ahead. A group made up of hotelier Robin Brown, Boston real estate developer The Davis Cos. and Dallas-based Omni Hotels & Resorts has been named as the Summer Street project’s top bidders, sources told the Boston Globe. The hotel is slated to have more than 1,000

rooms, including small, less-expensive microrooms, sources told the Globe. The bid for the project is expected to be awarded within three months, they added. Massport last year proposed a 1,200-room hotel whose building coincided with the $1 billion expansion plans for the convention center. The agency was forced to seek new bids for a smaller hotel after the governor and other officials raised concerns about the project’s cost and possible government subsidies. Six teams submitted bids for the project in the spring, but those proposals have not been made public. Massport and the team consisting of Brown, The Davis Cos. and Omni Hotels & Resorts declined to comment, the Globe said.Â

US health officials Source: Google signs create color-coded CBS, in talks with Zika zones in Florida others on web TV The new system, announced by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, casts all of Miami-Dade County as a yellow cautionary area with the exception of Miami Beach and a 1-square-mile area of Miami known as the Little River neighborhood, which are high-risk red zones. U.S. health officials introduced a new color-coding system on Tuesday for Florida’s Miami-Dade County to distinguish between areas of active transmission that present a significant risk of transmission and

areas where there is a possible risk of being infected. Previously, the CDC had warned pregnant women to consider avoiding nonessential travel to MiamiDade County to reduce their risk infection with Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that has been linked with severe birth defects. “Zika continues to pose a threat to pregnant women living in or traveling to Miami-Dade County,” said Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of CDC’s Division of Vector-

Borne Diseases. “Our guidance today strengthens our travel advice and testing recommendations for pregnant women to further prevent the spread of the infection among those most vulnerable.” Based on the new guidelines, the CDC said it recommends pregnant women consider postponing travel to yellow areas of Miami-Dade County, and they should specifically avoid red areas because they pose “a significant risk to pregnant women.” The CDC urged pregnant women who have lived in, traveled to, or had unprotected sex with someone who lived in or traveled to MiamiDade County since Aug. 1, 2016, to be tested for Zika. Alphabet Inc. unit Google has reached an agreement with CBS Corp. to carry the network on its planned web TV service and is in advanced talks with 21st Century Fox and Viacom Inc. to distribute its channels, three sources told Reuters on Wednesday. The service, which will be part of Google’s YouTube Platform, is expected to launch in the first quarter and will include all of CBS’ content, including live NFL games, one of the sources said. Google’s so-called “skinny bundle,” with fewer channels than a typical cable subscription, will cost $30 to $40 a month, the source said. It was unclear which Fox and Viacom networks would be part of the

Google service, two of the sources said. The sources requested anonymity because the discussions are confidential. A spokesperson for YouTube declined to comment. Google will be launching into an increasingly crowded market. Dish Network Corp. and Sony Corp., which in the past year have launched skinny bundles to appeal to younger viewers who do not want to pay for cable. CBS, Viacom and Fox declined to comment. Google has been talking to media companies about its web TV for years, but its plans have just ramped up over the past few months, one of the sources said. Apple Inc. had looked at a similar service but has shelved that plan for the time being, sources had previously told Reuters. REUTERS

Russian warships off the coast of Norway are carrying fighter bombers that are likely to reinforce a final assault on the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo in two weeks, a senior NATO diplomat said on Wednesday, citing Western intelligence. The fleet passed by the Norwegian city of Bergen on Wednesday, the diplomat said, while Russian media has said it will move through the English Channel, past Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea to the Syrian coast. “They are deploying all of the Northern fleet and much of the Baltic fleet in the largest surface deployment since the end of the Cold War,” the diplomat said on condition of anonymity. “This is not a friendly port call. In two weeks,

we will see a crescendo of air attacks on Aleppo as part of Russia’s strategy to declare victory there,” the diplomat said. Photos of the vessels have been released by the Norwegian military, taken on Monday. A Norwegian newspaper quoted the head of the Norwegian military intelligence service saying the ships involved “will probably play a role in the deciding battle for Aleppo.” Russia, which supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with an air campaign against the Western rebels in the devastated eastern part of Aleppo, has said the deployment will target Islamic State militants in Syria. But the NATO diplomat said the additional

military firepower was designed to drive out or destroy the 8,000 rebels in Aleppo, the only large city still in opposition hands, and allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to start a withdrawal. An intensified air campaign in eastern Aleppo, where 275,000 people are trapped, would further worsen ties between Moscow and the West, which says the Kremlin may be responsible for war crimes. NC offers reward in arson at local Republican office Evidence from the crime scene is being analyzed at the FBI’s laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. North Carolina will pay up to $5,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the weekend arson and graffiti attack at a local Republican Party headquarters, the state’s governor said on Wednesday. Local, state and federal investigators are searching for suspects after they said a device commonly described as a Molotov cocktail was thrown through a window of the Orange County Republican Party headquarters in Hillsborough on Sunday. A swastika and the message “Nazi Republicans leave town or else” were spray-painted on a nearby building. “The firebombing of a local political headquarters was clearly an act of intimidation, and I’m going to do everything I can to find the individual or individuals who committed this assault on our

democracy,” Republican Gov. Pat McCrory said in a statement announcing the reward money. Investigators on Tuesday collected video from locations around the party office, according to a statement from Hillsborough, a town of about 6,400 people located 40 miles from the state capital of Raleigh. Mike Pence, Republi-

can presidential nominee Donald Trump’s running mate, called the incident an “attack on the American political system” during a visit to the scene Tuesday afternoon. Pence urged voters to help provide accountability at polling places when Americans turn out for the Nov. 8 election. However, Pence’s remarks were well short of allegations by Trump in recent days that the race is being rigged against him at voting locations. Trump has provided no evidence for such assertions. North Carolina’s State Board of Elections said in a statement later on Tuesday that officials had taken steps to protect the safety of voters, observers and poll workers during the voting process. Early voting begins in the state on Thursday. REUTERS

In the latest apparent spoof on a securities regulator’s online filing system, a Chicago-area artist with a fondness for inspirational quotes claimed to have acquired about $88 billion worth of Bank of America Corp. shares on Wednesday. The filing did not appear to influence the stock price of the second-largest U.S. bank, which joins companies including Avon Products Inc., Integrated Device Technology Inc. and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. to have had fake filings attached to their ticker symbols on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Edgar system. While the SEC did not respond to a request for comment and Bank of America declined to comment, securities experts said there was no doubt the filing was a hoax. In it, a company called YNOFACE Holdings Inc. purportedly run by Antonio Lee said it had acquired 798.4 million Bank of America shares in an exchange on Aug. 15, and purchased another 4.2 billion common shares and 100 million

preferred shares on Sept. 22. The common shares alone would represent nearly half the bank’s total market cap. Bank of America’s largest shareholder, The Vanguard Group, has roughly 610 million shares, a stake of less than 6 percent. In an earlier filing, YNOFACE said it had implausibly raised over $1 trillion for an art fund. A quick Google search for Lee found several promotional sites describing him as a “world renowned artist, and YouTube celebrity specializing in acrylic painting.” A YouTube account characterizes YNOFACE as a company that “acquires, markets, and holds original art as a capital appreciation investment based off the fundamental metrics.” Lee’s Twitter posts showcase colorful paintings of a beach,

elephants in love and a naked person with a bird’s head, along with quotes like, “When an artist follows their intuition & dreams, society can only benefit.” Its avatar is a painting of a man with a big red question mark over his face. Reuters’ attempts to reach Lee were unsuccessful. While Bank of America appeared unscathed by the apparent scam, past phony filings have had real world consequences. Last year, Avon shares soared 20 percent on a filing about a fake takeover bid. The alleged fraudster was arrested earlier this year. The SEC’s vulnerability to phony filings has attracted the attention of Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, who wrote to the regulator last year to express his concern. The YNOFACE filing is so bizarre it is more likely a prank than a scam intended to generate profits, according to Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida. “Serious scamsters aren’t so amateurish,” he said. They say the best way to get over one lover is to find another one. But why do that when you can club it up with Leonardo DiCaprio instead? Newly single Tobey Maguire has reportedly been making good use of his hunky BFF since his separation from wife, Jennifer Meyer. According to Page Six,

Maguire and Meyer have been amicably separated for months and the dad of two has been spotted in the clubs with his famous bachelor pal Leo in Los Angeles clubs and on a private yacht in Ibiza, Spain. Not only is DiCaprio notorious for having a good time, but he’s often romantically linked to beautiful women, like

Dakota Fanning doesn’t overthink The actress talks about playing someone who does a bad thing in “American Pastoral.”

Speaking parts

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Dakota Fanning is 22 and, yes, she’s still playing high schoolers. But her role in “American Pastoral” is the kind only someone like Fanning could play: both naive and well beyond her years. Based on Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1997 novel, it casts her as Merry, a 16-year-old in 1968 who’s gone from a well-behaved kid raised by loving, progressive parents (Ewan McGregor, who also directed, and Jennifer Connelly) to an anti-war activist. The story finds her going on the run after a bomb she planted in sleepy New Jersey accidentally kills someone. Though set almost 50 years in the past, “American Pastoral” speaks to our own times, when the country is once again in danger of falling apart. Fanning speaks to us about playing fiery for a change, not overthinking things and doing Merry’s intense stutter. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is the most abrasive you’ve ever been onscreen before.

In the movie adaptation of Philip Roth’s “American Pastoral,” in theaters Friday, Dakota Fanning plays Merry, a teenager who becomes a bomb-planting anti-war activist during the Vietnam War, much to the horror of her father (Ewan McGregor, who also directed). RICHARD FOREMAN

I think so too, yeah. [Laughs] It was actually pretty freeing. On one hand it was difficult, because [Merry] jumps from one extreme to another: from quiet to loud, from not angry to super angry. To make those transitions feel natural and free and not fake and phony was kind of a challenge. But once you get there and find the rhythm of those emotions, there was something freeing about it. She’s somebody who thrives on making people feel uncomfortable. That can be kind of fun to do. [Laughs]

This streamlines a novel that’s nonlinear and filled with descriptions. But Roth’s prose seems like it could be a goldmine for playing someone as complex as Merry. You can always check the book. I read those descriptions, but I also like to stay with the script when I’m making a film. For me it’s just about the inner life of the character. I let the script guide me in terms of facts, and then it’s about the emotions that happen when you’re there and when you’re connecting with another actor. There’s no replace-

ment for that. There’s no way I can understand the character until you actually experience that. I think about as much as I can, but I really wait for the moment when I’m in the scene with Ewan and we’re connecting. That’s really powerful. Do you tend to concentrate on paring it down and not overthinking it? That’s really how you can sum me up. I try not to overthink about it at all. [Laughs] Not overthinking it might be the best way to play Merry, who does

Tell me about the stutter you have to do. Ewan and I talked about it and he sent me some videos. The main thing we talked about is we’ve seen Merry at a younger age, and we’ve seen the stutter as a source of pain for her and her parents. I kind of wanted to turn that on its head. When we see her at 16, she now gets this power from the stutter. She uses it as a weapon against her parents to purposefully make them uncomfortable. Usually we’d see something like that as an affliction or a source of pain. It interested me more as something Merry uses to her advantage.

something that’s indefensible but who the film, like the book, does not judge. I didn’t feel the need to relate to her or completely understand her. But I didn’t want to judge her. I also didn’t want to make her typical. I didn’t want it to be the typical character who does something bad and then they repent and feel bad and admit they’re wrong. That’s not very Roth, and that’s not very Merry. She’s uncompromising and unapologetic.

Sister act Joseph’s Natalie Closner on James Bay, “White Flag” and the intrigue of a family band. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Joseph’s haunting, melodic folk harmonies and time-traveling narrative lyrics have garnered them mainstream appeal. The sister trio — Natalie, Allison and Meegan Closner from Portland, Oregon — rose to the top of the Billboard Adult Alternative chart with “White Flag” just last week and kicked off their fall headlining tour in early September. Next week, they’ll perform on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” “I keep having these pinch-myself moments,” says Natalie, the eldest of the three. (Allison and Meegan are twins.) “We’ve had several moments that felt like ‘arrivals,’ and all of those moments are heart-swelling, but it’s like that old saying, ‘It takes three years to be an overnight success.’” For Joseph, these moments follow their second studio album, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” which also snagged the

top spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in September. En route to St. Louis, Natalie calls in for a quick chat about being a sister act, their inspiration for “White Flag” and how they really feel about “Portlandia.” How is being on the road with James Bay? He’s so, so good, and I have no doubt saying, that man is going to be a legend some day. I’m on this tour thinking, “Oh, there’s going to be a documentary about this person in 30 years, and I’m going to have to figure out what to say about it.” Do you find there are comparisons of you guys with other West Coast family or sister acts — like Haim? Of course, and there are some really amazing three-sister bands out there, so I feel super honored. People are just going to naturally compare you to these types of things. It’s just a unique thing to do, to be a family and doing this. I understand the curiosity because families are weird and people are like, “How do you do that?” How do you do that? I would be curious to read interviews with other family bands, but

For me, I have the dominating older sister, center-of-attention dynamic. And for someone else, it’s “Oh, I have to fall into my role as the younger sibling, doing whatever I’m told to do.” I have to con-

sciously say, “How do I empower you to break through this thing you knew about yourself growing up?” Does Portland ever show itself in your music? When it comes to the terror tour de force, the new Ghost Ship Harbor in Quincy will take some beating. This macabre theme park is set on the USS Salem — a battle class cruiser, long retired as a museum ship and the United States Naval and Shipbuilding Museum’s centerpiece. Through October, however, the grand ship is the last refuge as a zombie plague befalls mankind. As is always the case, some idiot zombie gets on board

and bloody mayhem ensues. “A big part of the success to doing a haunted house is having a backstory that fits the setting,” says creator Jason Egan, a top player in the horror biz who created the long-running Fright Dome in Las Vegas. “Crazy killer clowns on the USS Salem just didn’t make sense. Zombies and a plague make sense.” The Ghost Ship Harbor welcomes all ghostbusters over the age of 12 — sparking the interest for anyone like Egan, who’s been a big horror fan since elementary school. And for Egan, he eventually turned his fandom for the premeditated paranormal into a career. “I’ve worked with the ‘Halloween’ movie

Zombies are one thing, but what’s got teeth-a-chattering is the rumor that the USS

Salem, which was used in Chris Pine’s Disney film “The Finest Hours,” is actually haunted. The ship was featured on the television show “Ghost Hunters” and in Sam Baltrusis’ “13 Most Haunted in Massachusetts.” Like most similar battle class vessels, the Salem had an infirmary and, as a city on the sea, it served as a morgue. Its nickname, the Sea Witch, which honors its namesake Massachusetts’s town’s history, doesn’t ease fears. Egan’s not discounting the rumor, but he just wants people to have fun: “It’s a whole night of terror for anyone,” he says. “And it’s good value!” Ghost Ship Harbor runs through Oct. 31. Get your Sherlock on If you want to get really involved, like, literally, Brass Union is hosting a Murder Mystery night on Saturday evening, where attendees will be asked to play a role in a game of whodunit? The staff will stage a crime while in full costume and character, and bar patrons will be left to search for clues and question suspects to find the guilty party. The grand prize? A $100 gift card to the bar. Attendees will also be treated to a costume contest, what we’re told are “piles of candy” and Halloween-themed set from DJ J-Wall. Oct. 29, 8 p.m., 70 Union Square, Somerville, 21+, free, brassunion.com.

Brews and Boo’s Bukowski Tavern’s Inman Square location will host Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers over Halloween weekend for their BOOkowski Hallowen Bash. While the bar screens classic horror films, Jack’s Abbey

will serve up Brewery Maker, Wet Hop Lager, Pumpkin Crop Lager, Sibling Rye-valry and others from their Framingham vault. Candy and spooky snacks from chef Brian Poe will also be up for grabs — as is a $100 bar gift card for best costume of the night. Scary clowns never seemed so timely Indulge your worst nightmares in a really sexy, artsy sort of way when the Boston Circus Guild takes over the Oberon Theatre for five nights of Cirque of the Dead. Sound weird? Well, that’s part of its charm. In its fourth year, the production combines acrobatics, sideshow, burlesque and live music for a celebration of the most macabre monstrosities. They encouragingly advise attendees to dress like a “zombie so the rest of the horde is less likely to eat you.” Oct. 21-29, 2 Arrow St., Cambridge, 18+,$30-$50, americanrepertorytheater.org

Oh, and they have a full bar. Win. Oct. 30, 2 p.m., 8 p.m., 255 Elm St., Somerville, $18-$20, thirsty2016. bpt.me

The Boston BeauTease have staged this Halloween burlesque show since 2009, but this year’s is the most ambitious yet, a whole burlesque haunted house, or more correctly, “infernal tavern.” You get two and a half hours and can wander anywhere you want in the complex. The iFetch can keep your dog active while you’re away. PROVIDED

Good doggy Meet the iFetch: an automatic ball launcher that will keep your pup entertained for hours. DANIEL CASTILLAS Metro World News letters@metro.us

If you can’t keep up with your dog’s demands for yet another game of fetch, this gizmo could well save your throwing arm. The iFetch flings balls from between three to 12 meters (depending on the model) and it can even be operated by your pooch. All your dog has to do is drop the ball into the funnel and wait for it to shoot out the front. The device is powered by batteries or the mains and each model has three distance settings, which can be selected via the press of a button. Shira Klazmer, marketing manager of iFetch, explains why pets love iFetch. Why did you create this device for dogs? The idea for the iFetch started one afternoon when Grant Hamill was in high school and was trying to do his homework at the kitchen table. His toy poodle, Prancer, kept dropping the ball at his feet, begging him to play fetch. Twenty minutes later, with Grant growing tired of the game and Prancer as energetic as ever, Grant finally asked, “What if we made something that could throw the ball for

Prancer so I can finish my homework? When Grant’s grandfather, Denny, heard about the idea, he said, “Why not? This could be a fun family project. Several months later, after hundreds of hours of researching, prototyping, testing, and refining, we finally launched our Kickstarter campaign in June 2013. Thirty days and more than 1,000 backers later, we had received $88,000 — more than four times our original goal. How does it work? The iFetch is powered by six C batteries or by plugging it into the wall. It has three distance settings on the back that are easy to switch with just the press of a button. It can launch mini tennis balls 3, 7 or 9 meters. One ball is dropped in — either by the dog or human — at a time. The iFetch Too is powered by a rechargeable, internal battery. It has four distance options on the back that are also easy to switch with the press of a button. It can launch standard size tennis balls 3, 7.5 or 12 meters. It also has a random setting that will launch the ball at a random distance each time. The Frenzy requires zero power and is completely gravity-driven. One ball at a time is dropped in the top and rolls out one of the three chutes along the base at random. Are pets enjoying iFetch?

Of course pets like iFetch! Pets who are very fetchdriven and energetic are constantly craving a game of fetch. The idea behind the original iFetch was to provide an option for pets to play fetch even when their humans are occupied or gone from the house. It’s a great option for pets while their humans are away at work or simply unavailable. However, many of our customers play the iFetch products with their pets. It creates a great bonding experience and is great for their health by encouraging exercise and movement! Is it totally safe for dogs to use? Our automatic ball launchers can cause harm if your pup were to stand directly in front of it when the ball launches. So just like any other electronic device that launches balls, it’s important to supervise your pup while they are first learning to play with the toy. In the same way that you wouldn’t hand a tennis ball launcher to a child without first showing them how to play safely, we encourage our customers to help their pups to learn how to use our products safely by learning to drop the ball in the funnel and then “mark out a safe spot — out of the line of fire — for their dog. The Frenzy is a great option for any dogs who may be skittish and scared of noises or sudden launching.

IF I WERE NAMED THE NEW RED SOX GM … OPINION

DANNY PICARD @dannypicard

There’s a job opening on Yawkey Way. And I’m throwing my hat into the ring. Believe me, it would be an emotional goodbye to the media world, but if I were named the new Boston Red Sox general manager, those tears would dry pretty fast. Earlier this week on my podcast, we ran through a mock interview for the position, which opened up after Mike Hazen left for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And while I’m not actually functioning as someone who’s about to be invited into Fenway Park as a realistic candidate, I do believe I have some ideas that would get the Red Sox back to the ALCS, and even, the World Series. As I mentioned in last week’s column, I blame Rick Porcello and David Price for being swept by the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS this year. My point was clear: If you can’t

pitch in the postseason, you won’t win. And the team’s two best starters — Porcello and Price — didn’t show up with their best stuff. So, as new Red Sox GM, my priority this winter would be to take a look at the pitching staff, top to bottom, rotation and bullpen. But I don’t think anyone in the league should give up a king’s ransom to land a reliable middle reliever or setup man. I’ve seen championship bullpens created from within. I’ve seen reliability come from unexpected arms. Just ask Koji Uehara, who wasn’t in anyone’s plans to be the team’s shutdown, dominant closer that he ended up being for the World Series champion Red Sox in 2013. Before we get to the pitching staff, though, there’s just one thing I’d need to take care of. That would be to offer Edwin Encarnacion a four-year deal with an option on the fifth. I’d let his agent know that money is not an issue, and that it would be in their best interest to get back to me with any offer they receive. Unless someone makes him the highest paid player in the game — which

Danny Picard would go hard after Yordano Ventura. GETTY IMAGES

nobody will — I’ll most likely be willing to either match or top it. Encarnacion will never replace David Ortiz. But his production as a designated hitter who can also play some first base will help ease the pain of losing Ortiz. Once my message

gets through to Encarnacion and his agent, it’s time to make some calls and pull the trigger on a trade that would land me another top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher. And for that, it’s time to think outside the box. While Sonny Gray’s name

has been brought up before, why not give the Oakland Athletics a call and throw some names out there that would grab their full attention? After all, Gray is coming off the worst season of his career. Injuries played a role, but he did make 22 starts and went 5-11 with a 5.69 ERA. Still, he’ll turn 27 in November and is arbitration-eligible through 2019. With a fastball that can reach the mid-90s, you have to put your money on the fact that Gray has the stuff to bounce back and bounce back strong. He had a 3.08 ERA in 33 starts in 2014, and a 2.73 ERA in 31 starts in 2015. Expect 2016 to be an aberration. And expect me, as Red Sox GM this winter, to treat it as such. Also expect me to give the Kansas City Royals a call. Because I want Yordano Ventura. The kid is 25 years old and has already been in the World Series twice. He, like Gray, is coming off the worst season of his career, with an 11-12 record and 4.45 ERA in 32 starts. Ventura’s best season came in 2014, when he went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 30 starts. He’s under contract through 2021, where

there’s a $12 million club option. And with a fastball that can hit the upper-90s with filthy movement, there might not be much incentive for the Royals to move him right now. But, as new Red Sox GM, it would be my priority to make him available. Same goes for someone like Gray, and maybe even a few others. It’s time to stop paying for 30-year-old pitchers who are coming off the best years of their careers. It’s time to start overpaying in a trade to acquire starters in their 20s who have all the potential in the world to be dominant for several years before they even reach their 30th birthday. Most of my effort would be spent on a move like that, this winter, if I were hired as the new Red Sox GM. Instead, I’ll be shoveling snow and reacting to the team’s offseason from afar just like you. But I’ll let you know if I get the job. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com & on iTunes. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM. Follow him on Twitter @DannyPicard

The Celtics are the rumor kings Expect the C’s to again be at the forefront of every NBA rumor this season.

LaMarcus Aldridge

MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor wrote a tremendous piece this week on the Celtics’ present and future — a must-read for Boston basketball fans. O’Connor’s piece revealed the franchise’s current mindset as he spoke with Danny Ainge and Wyc Grousbeck. Both made it clear that the team is prepared to land a “superstar” player as soon as this current season, via trade, or in free agency next summer if the prices are right. Two familiar trade and free agent names popped up in the piece, as Golden State’s Kevin Durant and Chicago’s Jimmy Butler were discussed. Also this week, the Spurs’ LaMarcus Aldridge popped up in trade whispers for the first time. A look at all three players and their situations:

Kevin Durant The O’Connor piece was definitely of the “pie in the sky” variety, so let’s roll with that. Durant’s

Kevin Durant can become a free agent again next summer if he so desires. GETTY IMAGES

2016-17 season with the Warriors will end in one of two ways. He’ll raise a mental “Mission Accomplished” banner when he helps the Warriors to a title next June, and he’ll definitely want a new, fresh challenge following that. Or, the unthinkable will happen and the Warriors will not win the 2016-17 title. Durant won’t mesh with Golden State’s incumbent Big 3, he’ll want to again be the leader elsewhere, and

he’ll take advantage of his player option — becoming a free agent this coming summer. The Celtics were either Durant’s second or third choice this past summer, so he could be using a “wait and see” approach when it comes to the Celtics. If the C’s can reach the Eastern Conference finals (or even reach the finals — where they would likely meet Durant and the Warriors), Durant would

surely be interested in joining Al Horford in Boston on one year delay. If all remains in place, the Celtics should again have enough free agent cash to make a run at Durant next summer.

Jimmy Butler Here’s just a guess, but I’m thinking Rajon Rondo did not handle the news of the Michael Carter-Williams trade well. Chicago will surely want to see if the former NBA rookie of the year can provide a spark at point guard — meaning Rondo just lost some of his minutes.

It’s also important to remember that Dwyane Wade has a player option next summer. In sum, the situation in Chicago has a great chance to combust and combust quickly. The Bulls’ front office is well aware of the explosive situation at hand, that’s why they made Wade’s deal so brief. The Bulls can go into full rebuild mode at the drop of a hat — so maybe there is some method to their Midwest madness. Of course, if the Bulls do go this route during the course of the season — their best option to get back high draft picks is a Butler trade to Boston.

ESPN’s Jackie MacMullen raised some eyebrows this week when she mentioned that San Antonio’s LaMarcus Aldridge could be on the block. “I think there’s going to be some unusual movement [in the NBA this season],” she said on Comcast Sportsnet New England. “You’re going to see some movement that surprises you. … Sources were telling me the other day that LaMarcus Aldridge may not even finish the year with the Spurs. That experiment hasn’t quite worked out the way they had hoped. I think there’s going to be a lot of shifting around. That pick is going to be very, very valuable because [Nets coach] Kenny Atkinson is a really good coach, but no one’s good enough to save the Brooklyn Nets — they’re going to be horrible.” We think of the Spurs as a team that will never return to the lottery, but if they were to trade away Aldridge, make no mistake, they would be waiving a white flag. Gregg Popovich is all about championships and he knows that a team centered around Kawhi Leonard and Pau Gasol is not good enough to win it all — particularly in a conference that features the Warriors. Would the Spurs go full on tank like they did way back in 1996-97? It’s possible, and as MacMullan said the Celtics own what has great potential to be the No. 1 overall pick next summer.
