3 things you need to know JURY DELIBERATIONS IN CONSPIRACY TRIAL OF OREGON MILITANTS

1

A federal court jury began deliberations on Thursday in the trial of six men and a woman charged with conspiracy for their roles in the armed takeover of a U.S. Wildlife center in Oregon earlier this year. U.S. District Judge Anna Brown in Portland instructed members of the 12-member panel late on Wednesday on how to apply the law to facts in the case, capping two days of closing arguments by prosecutors and defense lawyers. The jury began deliberations Thursday morning, Kevin Sonoff, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Portland, said. The summations in turn followed weeks of testimony from witnesses, some of whom took part in the 41-day siege at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in remote eastern Oregon that began in early January. ANOTHER NORTH KOREA MISSILE FAILS, SAY US AND SOUTH

North Korea test-fired a missile that failed immediately after launch early on Thursday, the U.S. and South Korean militaries said, hours after the two countries agreed to step up efforts to counter the North’s nuclear and missile threats. The missile was believed to be an intermediate-range Musudan and was launched from the western city of Kusong, where the isolated state attempted but failed to launch the same type of missile on Saturday, the U.S. Strategic Command and South Korea’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The launch came shortly after the United States and South Korea agreed in Washington to bolster military and diplomatic efforts to counter the North’s nuclear and missile programs, which it is pursuing in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions. REUTERS

Verizon Communications Inc. added fewer than expected wireless subscribers in the third quarter due to intense competition, and indicated it may renegotiate a deal to buy Yahoo Inc after a breach of Yahoo user email accounts. As its bread-and-butter wireless operations struggle in a saturated phone market, Verizon had said in July it would buy Yahoo’s core business for $4.83 billion to drive growth in advertising and media. The company said on Thursday total operating revenue in the quarter fell 6.7 percent to $30.94 billion, from $33.16 billion. Analysts had expected revenue of $31.14 billion, according to Thomson Reuters. Shares of Verizon, the No.1 U.S. wireless company, slipped 2.7 percent to $49.04 in afternoon trading. The stock has gained more than 6 percent this year so far. REUTERS METRO’S NEWS QUIZ

Jeff Freedman will wake up Friday morning and slip on a bald cap. He’ll join an estimated 10,000 people nationwide who will be wearing one all day — a sign of their support in the fight against cancer. Every third Friday in October for the past seven years, Freedman and thousands of others have donned bald caps as part of the “Be Bold, Be Bald” campaign. Freedman started the movement — which also serves as a fundraiser for more than 50 cancer charities — after his friend and Boston-based ad agency co-founder, Mike Connell, was diagnosed with the disease.

“It was a long two years of him battling [cancer],” Freedman said. “What I found out in those two years was that most of my strength came from Mike, as weak as he looked. It blew me away how strong he was, how confident, courageous. He kept a positive attitude. The more people I’ve met through [Be Bold, Be Bald], I realize how strong they all are.” After Connell died, Freedman wanted a way to honor him. He had actually shared the bald cap idea with Connell while he was still alive. Connell approved, saying he didn’t want people to shave their heads for him. “It’s still not an easy thing to do, to put on a bald cap,” he said. “It’s easy to do physically, but it’s emotional.” Freedman often describes the campaign as a “vanity challenge” rather than a physical effort like a benefit marathon. Anyone can wear a bald cap for a day and no one needs to train in advance. It’s also more symbolic,

he said, of the hardships everyone fighting cancer knows too well. Recently the bald caps have been updated to allow people to use them as a canvas for writing the name of the person they’re supporting or to display some words of inspiration, Freedman said. “The end goal is to not need to put on another bald cap, and that’s not because they’d figured out how to give chemo without losing your hair, but because we’ve figured out how to cure cancer,” he said. “That’s the ultimate goal. Until then, I want to give people a way to show their strength and support other people and make a difference. You don’t have to have cancer to help fight it.” Freedman also acknowledged Vice President Joe Biden’s recent comments about his efforts to cure cancer. Biden, who lost his son Beau to brain cancer last year, spoke Wednesday about his Cancer Moonshot Initiative at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the

U.S. Senate in Boston. Biden chairs the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force, which focuses on making the most of federal investments and private sector efforts to support cancer research and make strides in the prevention, screening, treatment and care of cancer patients. Though Freedman hasn’t been able to connect with Biden yet — other public figures like Julian Edelman and Kathy Bates have participated in “Be Bold, Be Bald” — he said that he would love to get involved with him and that Biden’s priorities align with the goals of the campaign. “What we learn from the world’s best nurses, physicians and researchers — even if we couldn’t save our son — is that science and medicine and technology are progressing faster than ever” Biden said in his speech, “and there is the possibility to save the countless others of our daughters and our sons.”

Mass. unemployment rate at 15-year low Some caution that the rate fails to account for those who have stopped looking for jobs. The Massachusetts unemployment rate in September fell to 3.6 percent, its lowest level since June 2001. The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported Thursday morning that Bay State employers added 5,100 jobs in September, helping to lower the jobless rate from 3.9 percent in August. The jobless rate in Massachusetts has fallen 1.2 percent over the past year. “The rate has fallen dramatically in the last two months, threetenths of a point this month, and two-tenths of a point the month before. While these are preliminary estimates, this is very good news for the Commonwealth,” Secretary of Labor and

Workforce Development Ronald Walker II said in a news release. “Over the year, jobs are up 63,800.” While new jobs and more people working have historically pointed to surges in state tax collections, Gov. Charlie Baker and the Legislature have spent the past nearly two years chasing after budget deficits largely tied to overly optimistic estimates of revenue collections. The contrast between jobs and unemployment data and revenue collections has forced policymakers to research underlying activity. The U.S. unemployment rate of 5 percent is “considerably higher” when considered through the lens of the worker participation rate, which differentiates between those employed and actively looking for work and those who are unemployed or not actively pursuing work, according to Congressman Richard Neal.

The worker participation rate was about 66 percent in 2006 and 2007 but has fallen steadily since and rested at 62.9 percent in September, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. “The worker participation rate needs to be the focus,” Neal told the State House News Service last week. “The unemployment rate does not take into consideration the number of people who are working two jobs, but not counted, or those who want to work and can’t find a job or those who took Social Security disability claims at the beginning of the recession. They’re not likely going back to work. And those who took the Social Security draw-down at 62 — they’re not going back to work. So these are people who have just left the workforce and it’s estimated that there are 8 [million] to 9 million of them. So that’s the key.” STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE

Police: 13-year-old struck by stray bullet while in bedroom A 13-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet Wednesday night while in his Chelsea apartment bedroom, police said. Authorities said the boy was sitting in his third-floor apartment on Bellingham Street just after 8 p.m. when the bullet struck him in the shoulder. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he

is recovering from surgery and is in good condition, according to Capt. Keith Houghton. The incident caused the nearby Bunker Hill Community College’s Chelsea campus to be locked down for about a half an hour, according to the school’s Twitter account. Prescription Drug Take-Back Day raises awareness of abuse One in six children have abused prescription medications, according to the Overdose Prevention and Education Network (OPEN), a local multi-city collaborative headed by the Cambridge Public Health Department. Most often, they’re getting those pills from their friends and family, but without their knowledge, OPEN reported. That’s part of why the organization is working with the Cambridge Police Department to join other cities participating in a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday. “National Take-Back Day is a great time to get rid of those old medications cluttering up your medicine cabinet, protect your kids from accidental poisoning or addiction and do something good for the environment at the same time,” said Tali Schiller, substance abuse prevention coordinator for the Cambridge Public Health Department and coordinator of OPEN. The initiative occurs nationwide Saturday as a way to provide a “safe, convenient and responsible” way to dispose of prescription drugs while also raising awareness about the potential abuse of medications, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Diversion Control Division. “Residents can drop off their unused or unwanted prescriptions throughout the year (at the Cambridge police station), but the Drug

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

Take-Back Day helps generate broader awareness about this service offered to residents,” Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick said. Officials ask that residents go through their medicine cabinets and drop off expired or unwanted prescription drugs at any collection site, including sites like the police department at 125 Sixth Street and Brigham and Women’s Outpatient Pharmacy, which has take-back kiosks in Boston and Chestnut Hill. Collection sites exist for a reason, officials said. They don’t want you flushing those pills down the toilet. “It’s easy to say, ‘Just flush medicine,’ but it turns out, for some medications, we can measure the amount of that medicine in our water,” said Dr. Lori Tishler, medical director for the Jen Center for Primary Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Especially when we’re talking about opioids or benzodiazepines [like Xanax,

Valium, Klonopin], drugs that are either addictive or harmful to the people who aren’t taking it, it’s better to dispose of them properly.” Tishler noted that the drug take-back initiative is especially important considering the current opioid epidemic affecting the entire country. “In the past, many doctors were prescribing more pills than patients truly needed, so people have so many of these medicines in their cabinet,” she said. “We’re thinking so much more about how we prescribe opioids and how we can do it safely and appropriately.” If you’re hesitant to donate unused pills because you’re worried about needing pain medication in the future, Tishler said that it’s better to start fresh. If you are in that much pain, you probably need to see a doctor anyway, she said. A full list of collection sites can be seen on the DEA’s website.

The polling method is clearly unscientific, but only one vote is accepted per computer. Only one participant chose to include a comment. “He is not fit to be dog catcher, let alone president,” wrote Gary Spino. “He is mean, inexperienced and vindictive.” Though Trump prevailed in all three Metro debate polls, his margin of victory declined slightly. Metro’s online poll after the first debate attracted the largest number of participants: 2,128. Trump was deemed the winner of that debate by 63.4 percent of the readers who voted.

Interestingly, 21 percent of those who participated in the first poll did so from outside the U.S. Votes were recorded from 54 other countries, including Russia, Malaysia and South Africa. GARY KANE

Baylor University faces fed probe over response to campus sex assaults Baylor, the world’s largest Baptist university, has been rocked by a scandal over whether it failed to do enough to prevent and investigate sexual assaults against women by football players and others that led to the ouster of the school’s president and its football coach. The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into Baylor University’s response to sexual violence on campus, acting on a complaint filed by the school’s former administrator responsible for looking into sexual assault complaints. The federal investigation was disclosed by the Department of Education and by the lawyer representing Patty Crawford, who resigned this month as Baylor’s Title IX coordinator and accused the university of retaliating against her for being too forceful in looking into sexual assault claims. Baylor is located in Waco in central

Texas. Title IX is a section of a U.S. education law that protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Crawford filed the complaint with the department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) after being denied resources and cut out of the loop in Baylor’s investigations of suspected Title IX violations, Rogge Dunn, Crawford’s Dallas-based lawyer, said Thursday. “Baylor undermined the authority of its Title IX coordinator,” Dunn said in an interview, adding the probe indicates the office found Crawford’s complaints credible and warranting further investigation. Baylor said in a statement it will fully cooperate with the federal

investigation. “Baylor has undergone a comprehensive assessment of its response to sexual violence resulting in the adoption of 105 recommendations for improvement,” Interim President David Garland said in a statement “Should the OCR identify additional areas of improvement, we will work on those immediately,” he added. Baylor in May ousted Kenneth Starr as university president and Art Briles as its football coach after an independent report found that administrators mishandled sexual abuse cases involving football players. Starr, the former independent counsel who investigated Bill Clinton during his presidency, has said he was unaware of what was happening at the school but still accepted responsibility. In March, a female former student at Baylor brought a negligence lawsuit in federal court against the school, claiming it acted callously and indifferently after she was raped by a Baylor football player. Trump’s stance on election results deepens Republican Party rifts Trump’s statement, the most controversial in a debate that at times descended into insults by both candidates, made banner headlines across the country and raised questions about whether he was committed to a peaceful transition of power, a cornerstone of American democracy. Several prominent Republicans on Thursday denounced Donald Trump’s refusal to commit to accepting the result of the presidential election, and some worried his stance might make it more difficult for his party to hold onto control of Congress. Trump’s refusal, which Democratic rival Hillary Clinton called “horrifying, was the standout remark of their third and final debate on Wednesday night. It ratcheted up Trump’s claims that the election was being rigged against him, and became the latest flashpoint in an unusually volatile race three weeks before voters go to the polls. The Republican candidate reinforced his comment at a rally in Dela-

ware, Ohio, on Thursday, saying he would respect the result “if I win. “Of course I would accept a clear election result, but I would also reserve my right to contest or file a legal challenge in the case of a questionable result, he said. With Trump trailing in opinion polls, the focus ahead of the Nov. 8 vote is shifting to Congress, and whether Republicans will keep their narrow majority in the Senate or even their larger advantage in the House of Representatives. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who lost the 2008 presidential election to Democrat Barack Obama, said accepting the election result is “the American way. “I didn’t like the outcome of the 2008 election. But I had a duty to concede, and I did so

without reluctance, McCain, who has opened a poll lead in his Senate re-election race, said in a statement. “A concession isn’t just an exercise in graciousness. It is an act of respect for the will of the American people, a respect that is every American leader’s first responsibility. McCain has withdrawn his support for Trump. Asked on Wednesday night if he would commit to a peaceful transition of power, the businessmanturned-politician replied: “What I’m saying is that I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense. OK? Democrats jumped to ask Republican candidates whether they agreed with Trump, who is making his first run for public office against Clinton, a former first lady, senator and secretary of state. TRUMP’S THIRD STRIKE The final votes have yet to be cast and Donald Trump may yet pull out a victory in the presidential contest, but the score for the debates is easy to see: Hillary Clinton 3, Donald Trump 0. I suspect his ardent fans would like Ann Coulter to chase me down the street with a Louisville Slugger for saying that, but it’s not even a close call. Through all three of these matchups, Clinton steadily took bases while he committed one error after another. Oh sure, he had “at bats. Trump was on firm ground when he hammered her for misleading voters, or her penchant for secrecy, or her finger-to-the-wind standards for leadership. Polls have shown voters are suspicious of her on all those fronts. And as he swatted at her vulnerabilities, she often seemed stiff and evasive. “Do you have one set of beliefs in private and another in public? “Let’s talk about the movie ‘Lincoln’! And while all those hours of rehearsal gave

her a fine command of information, they also made her seem even more like a longtime D.C. insider; underscoring what Democrats have feared and the polls have proven from the start: She is far from an ideal candidate. So why did he lose? Because too often he

lurched into a caricature. Squinting. Interrupting. Spouting half completed thoughts and thoroughly disproven “facts. Every time she baited him with an outside pitch, he swung so hard it took him to the ground. And when she popped one up — which she did, plenty — he seemed so intent being Thurston Howell III, he did not even notice her mistake falling right past his glove. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. For months D.C. wagered on whether studied competence or swing-forthe-fence showmanship would triumph. These debates were to be a clash of titans. What we got, however, was mostly three sad innings of lame insults, cheap shots and posturing. Clinton was wellprepared, she largely remained calm and she had a game plan — enough to be a highly capable debater if not an inspiring one. But mainly the analysts all agreed — Trump was bad. And it doesn’t take much to beat that.

Demi Lovato discusses going blond, Hillary Clinton and her break from the spotlight. LUCIA HERNANDEZ Metro World News letters@metro.us

Demi Lovato is out to prove that blondes really do have more fun. The 24-year-old singer-actress has been showing off her golden locks as an ambassador for Koleston Astonishing Blonde hair dye. We chatted with the “Body Say songstress about why her new hair color has everyone talking. You shocked the world with your new hair color.

Why did you do it? Well, I heard Koleston has a new technology that makes the transition from dark to blond hair really easy. And I knew I was coming to Mexico, so I wanted to try something different for my Mexican fans. Do blondes really have more fun? I feel good. It’s fun. You’ve tried out lots of very bold looks throughout your career. What’s been your wildest style? The bravest one I think I’ve had was when I had a half-shaved head and I also colored it pink. What was your favorite? I love having long hair,

to the care of mental patients. What dierence do you think you can make? What I want to achieve with Cast is to put mental health in the public eye and make it known. And for people to realize that there is nothing wrong or taboo about mental illness. It’s about caring for [yourself], and I want to show people that perspective. The more aware we are, the better we will be able to support those in need. I want to help as many people as possible.

but short hair is much easier to care for and keep healthy. So you never know what my next new cut could be ‌ Now that you’re a blonde, you must have a dierent beauty regimen. What’s your top tip for keeping your hair looking healthy? Definitely. I think no matter what my look is, the most important thing is to always maintain healthy hair. And when you make a radical change like this, it is very important to apply deep hydration treatments frequently.

Is that what you’ll be focusing on in 2017 since you announced your break from showbiz? Yes, my priority will be

I would just tell them that it is very important not to be so hard and demanding on yourself. You have to love yourself and make daily positive affirmations and recognize your own beauty, even on those days when you do not feel so well. Do you practice this yourself? Yes. I try to not be so

critical of myself. I make sure to keep a healthy diet and exercise constantly. That way I feel good and also in front of my mirror daily I repeat positive statements that remind me I’m beautiful and that helps me a lot. Speaking of exercise, what’s your favorite? Boxing — I love to hit things. Do you practice it daily? Yes, every day. Do you think that the U.S. and the rest of the world are ready for a blond president? Definitely! Cobie Smulders doesn’t get angry The “Jack Reacher co-star doesn’t get while people keep casting her as tough and scary.

strep throat or something. It was like a big FU to my body. My body was like, “You pushed us hard for so long, like one of those things where when you finally take a rest, that’s when you get sick, because your adrenaline is no longer pumping in your system. I don’t know scientifically what goes on, but I do find that once I finally have a week off, it’s like, “No, you’re sick.

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Cobie Smulders is very nice. Over the phone she’s friendly and funny, self-deprecating. In other words, the “How I Met Your Mother alum — and Marvel’s resident badass, Maria Hill — is the opposite of her character in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The actress, 34, plays an Army major wrongfully accused of murder. It’s up to Tom Cruise’s wandering fixer to save her. Smulders had to learn how to fight and act tough — this, after what should have been a debilitating real-life accident. So this is nuts, but you had a broken leg when

Cobie Smulders teams up with Tom Cruise to ďŹ ght some bad guys in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.â€? DAVID JAMES

you were hired for “Jack Reacher. You broke it the night before you started Clea DuVall’s indie “The Intervention, in which you hobble about on crutches. What on earth happened? Nothing, nothing. I tripped and fell in my apartment — nothing. That’s why I was like, “It’s fine. I thought I had dislocated my knee and it was sliding back into place. And it turned out

to be a fracture, which got bigger and bigger as I kept walking around, till eventually I couldn’t use it anymore. When I showed up on the “Intervention set, we were in the friggin’ swamps of Savannah. I was like, “You can hire someone else, that’s totally fine. And Clea just said, “Let’s use it. It ended up kind of working in the film, I thought — or at least it wasn’t a total distraction.

Given all the prep you did for this, did your body just rebel once you GETTY IMAGES were done with the movie? Once I got back to New York, I got bronchitis, then I got the flu, then I had, like,

This being “Jack Reacher,â€? the ďŹ ghting and stunts have this grounded, realistic quality. Even so, I can’t imagine doing all my own stunts. Well, you would, if you trained for months. When you do friggin’ sliding drills over and over and over again for hours a day, you go, “Yeah, I can see how I did that.â€? [Laughs] Because I did it every day for two months.

You have this ability to play friendly and funny, but here — and in Andrew Bujalski’s indie “Resultsâ€? — you’re equally convincing as someone who’s tough and often angry. How do you think people saw this side of you? I have no idea. I honestly don’t know how I get these roles. You don’t seem that menacing. I’m not! I hate confrontation. I hate it. I have a problem even saying, “I didn’t like that.â€? I’m very Canadian. I’m very easygoing. [“Jack Reacherâ€? director Edward Zwick] had to push me a bit in this one. He had to amp me up. I would think a take was really big, and he’d be like, “No, that was more like you were kind of upset. We need you to be really, really upset.â€? I can’t gauge that. To me, it’s all yelling and anger. But it’s probably not as angry as it seems.Â

Complex political underbelly Often, politics isn’t as it seems. Lyric Stage Company’s production of “Warrior Class,” an intimate, three-character play by “House of Cards” writer Kenneth Lin, hones in on convoluted behindthe-scenes political dealings through the fictional Republican House of Representatives candidate Julius Lee. Lee, who’s been dubbed “the Republican Obama,” finds himself quickly gaining popularity after a sensational speech. Just as quickly, though, an ex-girlfriend, Holly, threatens to derail his newfound aspirations. We spoke with Michael Tow, who plays Julius, about his character, coming to terms with the backstabbing nature of politics and how “Warrior Class” relates to this fall’s presidential election. Why is Holly making Julius’ new life in politics so difficult? I was a crazy ex-boyfriend

kind of thing. I don’t think so but, as I say in the play, I had a different view of it. I haven’t seen her in so many years, but for me to get to the next level on the national stage, I need to confront my past. This [political] handler has to help set it up. We have a lot of backand-forth stuff that she wants and otherwise, all this stuff could go public.

He’s coming in pretty green and [has] lofty goals. Trying to do the right thing and do good in the role. But as he gets more and more connected and understanding the way things work in politics, he’s realizing that it’s that not that easy. There’s a lot of sacrifice and give and take. If you want something, you kind of have to give a little bit.

Julius has to make some tough choices during the campaign. How do you think he makes them?

How do you keep a play about the intricacies of politics engaging? It’s just focusing to make

sure that each of these characters has their own struggles, their own needs. They have certain goals that they want. And they’re really going to do whatever they can to get what they want — whether it’s to move their career, whether or not it’s to save their family. I think that friction and that sly back and forth keeps most people engaged. How do you think “Warrior Class” helps illuminate what’s going on in national politics today? It gives a great perspective on what is happening now in the political arena. When you see an endorsement here, or you see why did the candidate say this or how come they don’t come out and say something negative. There might be so much behind the scenes that could be happening. This play gives an insight to that world.

METRO.US WEEKEND, OCTOBER 21-23, 2016

12 WKND “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” Director: Edward Zwick Stars: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders Rating: PG-13 Is a second entry too early to break a franchise? “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” should have been the fourth or fifth entry in the series: the one that ruins the fun after a good long run. The second in Tom Cruise’s pint-size bruiser series still lets him deliver deadpan put-downs as well as he does debilitating blows. He also has a partner. And a possible daughter. And at one point he remarks forlornly about his lonely life. He even smiles. This is grim news for an already grim year. Still, it could be worse. The partner happens

Tom Cruise still brings it a little bit in the disappointing sequel “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.” CHIABELLA JAMES

to be played by Cobie Smulders, the delightful “How I Met Your Mother” alum. She’s a woman Reacher tries to save after she’s been falsely accused of murder. Tough and fun as Smulders is, Reacher works best alone. Of course, the first “Jack Reacher” wasn’t a one-man show. It was crisply directed by Christopher McQuarrie, whose filmmaking was as lean and no-nonsense as

“Ouija: Origin of Evil,” starring Henry Thomas’ back, puts off its silliest moments till the end. JUSTIN LUBIN, UNIVERSAL PICTURES

Book Your Holiday Party Now!

“Ouija: Origin of Evil” Director: Mike Flanagan Stars: Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson Rating: PG-13 The good thing about being a sequel to “Ouija” is there’s no way to go but up. There was no reason a movie based on a bogus “spirit board” anyone

can buy at Costco had to be a humorless slog, but them’s were the breaks in the 2014 Halloween hit, which offered boo moments with all the oomph of an accountant filing clients’ annual taxes. The prequel “Origin of Evil,” by contrast, tries hard. It might even try too hard. Thoughtfully directed by Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) for maximum creepage, it also can’t help but trip up on its own byzantine, arbitrary

his star and hero. Here, we get Edward Zwick (“Glory”), who makes everything look murky and cheap. Even worse, instead of no less than Werner Herzog as the main baddie, we get … some guy. We’re not even going to look up his name. Still go see this, if only so they make “Jack Reacher 3” featuring a bad guy played by film director Rob Zombie. MATT PRIGGE

rules, gamely trying to pretend it’s not turning into a stock horror mush that just so happens to be the weirdest ever piece of product placement. Heading back to the 1960s, it finds a family who unwittingly unleash another scary ghost, who seems to have taken root inside a little girl (Lulu Wilson). Even when people are scampering about ceilings or making faces like a Chris Cunningham monster, Flanagan tries his best. The scares come laced with wit, including a genuinely original bit involving a noose that doubles as a bungee cord. Flanagan even cares about his doomed heroes; as the mother, Elizabeth Reaser acts like she’s in an even better movie. But the screenplay and story is a shambles. You want to give it the benefit of the doubt; you also respect it enough to be honest and say it doesn’t really work. MP

“Keeping Up with the Joneses” Director: Greg Mottola Stars: Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher Rating: PG-13

88 Sleeper St., Boston, MA 02210

617-426-5093 Email: Party@barkingcrab.com

There’s one funny joke in “Keeping Up with the Joneses,” and it’s technically a repeat. It turns out that the big bad guy, played by Patton Oswalt, is named “Bruce Springstine” (pronounced exactly like “Springsteen”). It’s not a great joke, but it’s far loopier than the film’s stale jabs at suburban America and its stiff gunplay. It’s also the only way you can tell this is a film by Greg Mottola, of the very good “Superbad” and “Adventureland,” but also the wan “Paul,” whose best bit also involved a weird name: At the end it was revealed

Zach Galifianakis’ bare belly and Isla Fisher star in “Keeping Up with the Joneses.” FRANK MASI

the fed played by Jason Bateman was called “Lorenzo Zoil.” The step-down in silly names is sadly indicative of how little care went into “Keeping Up with the Joneses,” the kind of comedy that arrogantly assumes things that sound funny in theory will automatically be in practice. Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher play boring suburbanites who are bowled over when their

new neighbors show up looking like Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot. It takes little snooping to divine that they’re spies, possibly up to no good. Every actor’s clearly having a good time, but not a good enough time that they enrich material that’s barely there. It’s a premise and a cast and nothing more; it should have never been more than a poster. MP

In “American Pastoral,” Ewan McGregor plays a man whose daughter (played at age 12 by Hannah Nordberg) does a bad, bad thing. JRICHARD FOREMAN

“American Pastoral” Director: Ewan McGregor Stars: Ewan McGregor, Dakota Fanning Rating: R What Ewan McGregor’s “American Pastoral” does to the Philip Roth novel it adapts is the cinematic equivalent of unslinking a Slinky. He’s straightened out a nonlinear hoedown, flattening a work that jumps around through its tale of a mighty specimen — a nice Jewish boy known as “The Swede,” played by the director himself — as his American dream crumbles around him.

But it does worse than that. It completely removes a very important detail: That his story is not strictly what happened but partly a fiction, with giant, unknown gaps filled in by the ever-randy, ever-tetchy imagination of serial Roth figure Nathan Zuckerman. Instead we get a straightforward telling about how McGregor’s the Swede was heartbroken when his perfect daughter (Dakota Fanning) turned into a bomb-planting, Vietnam Warprotesting activist. Credit where credit’s due: The script, by John Romano (“The Lincoln Lawyer”), doesn’t flatten everything out. It retains many of the dark

and transgressive complexities of Roth’s novel. It remains searching and empathetic. But that doesn’t forgive eliding the bigger nuances, or — like every Roth movie adaptation — translating the author’s flowing, dense, punchy prose into stiffly-played scenes. Only Fanning gets it right: While everything around her is overly tasteful and handsome, she’s volcanic, impossible to be contained, and, in the final stretches, devastatingly withdrawn and robotic. She seems to have sprung directly from the pages of an author who, here and elsewhere, forever makes it hard for moviemakers to get him right. MATT PRIGGE

Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm Sundays & three Weds., Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 & 9, at 2pm Rebecca Hall takes on the role of Christine Chubbuck, the TV reporter known for shooting herself on the air in 1974, in Antonio Campos’ “Christine.” THE ORCHARD

“Christine” Director: Antonio Campos Stars: Rebecca Hall, Michael C. Hall Rating: R The sad story of Christine Chubbuck — the Florida news reporter who shot herself live on the air in 1974 — is upsetting enough that this year it’s birthed two movies. There’s

Robert Greene’s doc “Kate Plays Christine,” which argued that any traditional biopic about her would be an ethical violation. And there’s Antonio Campos’ “Christine,” a traditional biopic. Thing is, Campos’ entry isn’t so easily taken down. Rebecca Hall plays Chubbuck as a bundle of nerves, bad at making friends and desperately trying to make it as a journalist who can (but won’t) make a difference. The movie doesn’t treat her as some-

one bound for an infamously grim end; it could play just fine as a character study — a sad portrait of loneliness and depression. Rather than canceling each other out, the two films work better together. Unlike Greene’s, Campos’ take has the space to show what it must have been like to live in her skin. In tandem, they help rescue a lost soul from being someone you know only because of her end. MP

Detecting in the dark The new BBC series “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” makes a not-exact science of investigation. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Oddball detective shows have been going strong for over a decade, but none have included a paranormal element. The title character in “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” a new series premiering on BBC America this Saturday at 9 p.m., solves cases by tapping into the universe — but not in a strictly useful way. “He’s not psychic, but he receives messages which are interpreted to him as intuitions and

hunches,” says series star Samuel Barnett during an interview with the cast. “But the problem is it’s all pure instinct, so he’s constantly acting on impulse, getting into trouble, absolutely leaping before he looks.” To actually solve crimes, Gently is joined by a reluctant sidekick, who mostly accidentally helps unravel his visions (played by Elijah Wood); a hyper-competent but neurotic bodyguard (Jade Eshete); and a girl with a supernatural disease (Hannah Marks). Further complicating things is an assassin — also guided by the whims of the universe — who has made Gently her next target (Fiona Dourif ). “I can honestly say I haven’t seen anything like this on TV before,” says Barnett. “The world we’re in is

“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” stars Samuel Barnett as the sort-of-psychic detective and Elijah Wood as his reluctant partner, Todd.

a very grounded world in which extraordinary things happen.” His co-star Marks sums it up even more succinctly: “If Sherlock was horrible at his job, and then there was some magic and some corgis.” Though written by Douglas Adams, author of the space-traveling “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “Dirk Gently” takes place in the real world. It’s been adapted before, both as a

radio drama and a 2010 series, but this time the BBC brought 31-yearold American writer/ producer Max Landis on board, best known for the Kristen Stewart-Jesse Eisenberg stoner thriller “American Ultra.” The series kicks off with the murder of a millionaire, and adds psychic vampires, a cult leader and a winning lottery ticket. Then things get really strange. “A thing I wanted to

BETTINA STRAUSS

do differently [from the 2010 series] was that it wasn’t ‘Dirk Gently’ — it was something more like ‘Psych,’ it was something more like ‘Monk,’ it was like a quirky detective show,” says Landis. “‘Dirk Gently’ is an insane science fiction novel.” Keeping things from going off the rails is Executive Producer Rob Cooper, a veteran of all three “Stargate” TV series who knows what

makes a larger-than-life show work. “It’s a danger in Douglas Adams’ work that you can go off the rails, and it was very important to all of us that we create characters that felt very real, even as they have these very strange things come into our lives,” he says. “This collection of characters, as odd and occasionally murderous as they are, are people you’d want to hang out with.”

Michelle Williams pops up in the second story in Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women. SUNDANCE SELECTS

“Certain Women Sonia Braga plays a woman trying to keep housing developers from turning her longtime Brazilian apartment into a skyscraper in “Aquarius. VITAGRAPH

“Aquarius Director: Kleber Mendonca Filho Stars: Sonia Braga, Maeve Jinkings Rating: NR

39TH SEASON

It sounds like a rah-rah, you-gogirl rabble-rouser: In “Aquarius,â€? Sonia Braga plays Clara, a 60-something woman ďŹ ghting o scheming developers who want to turn her longtime apartment building into another skyscraper. Sometimes it is a rabble-rouser. The Brazilian legend gets to snarl at cold-hearted jerks, shout them down. The movie, though, is so big, so expansive that it’s more than just that. It is a crowd-pleaser.

It’s also a character study always up for a detour, a complex study of urban life, a study of aging, downright cosmic. Over its sprawling, rich 140 minutes, the movie jerks you around. Every time your blood gets boiling over Clara’s plight, it lights o on a digression; every time you’re grooving on its aimless study of her life, the drama pops back in. But the experience, it’s thrilling. It has the power to fulďŹ ll its ambitions, and it has the movie star to hold your hand through the muck. Clara is the role the ďŹ ery Braga has always deserved, but she doesn’t upstage her movie. She’s embedded within it, another sign of its excellence. MATT PRIGGE

Director: Kelly Reichardt Stars: Laura Dern, Michelle Williams Rating: R Movies with multiple stories tend to keep things small, but the events in the latest from Kelly Reichardt (“Wendy and Lucyâ€?) are so minor we don’t realize they’re momentous until they’re wrapping up. Even when, in the ďŹ rst tale, a lawyer (Laura Dern) gets involved in a hostage situation with a wronged client (Jared Harris), it somehow seems mundane. Weaving stories by Maile Meloy, “Short Cutsâ€?-style, Reichardt lets her episodes unfold organically, leaving in longeurs most movies elide. She tells of a woman (Michelle Williams) trying to buy sandstone from an old man (Rene Auberjonois). Later she sketches the budding,

perhaps one-sided friendship between a lonely ranch hand (Lily Gladstone) and a frazzled night-school teacher (Kristen Stewart). Reichardt is beyond subtle — her latest is destined for the “Understated Dramasâ€? section of Netix Instant — but that’s all part of her plan. What “Certain Womenâ€? oers is more than mere slices of life. Each story ends with a disappointment, ones that will haunt the characters forever, but probably not in ways that will make them change their life course. The nonevents that transpire are destined to be those memories that rise up years, decades down the line, out of nowhere, half-remembered moments that shaped us in ways we can never deďŹ ne. “Certain Womenâ€? acts the same way: It lingers, sticking in the back of your brain, hitting you long after it’s over. The Patriots should torch a weak Pittsburgh pass defense.

them 13th in the NFL, and shoot up to second in the NFL in points allowed per game, giving up just 15.2. But those performances are against quarterbacks including Ryan Tannehill, Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler. On the flip side, they’re allowing third-down conversions at a 44.2-percent rate, 27th in the NFL. So can Landry Jones be effective? Before we completely write him off, just remember he came into a game last season against the Cardinals, went 8-for-12 with two touchdowns and earned the comeback win. His Steelers teammates believe in him. That said, they’ll probably look to hand off the ball to Le’Veon Bell 30 times.

JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

We’ve been robbed, football fans. This Sunday was supposed to pit the AFC’s two best quarterbacks — and the AFC’s two best teams — against one another. Now, it pits the best quarterback against some guy named Landry Jones. And it remains to be seen if the Steelers are any good without Ben Roethlisberger, who will miss the marquee matchup (and reportedly more than a month) after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee suffered last week. That is a shame. Patriots-Steelers was a game that everybody had circled, unlike most of the trash that gets put out on Sundays these days, one reason behind the NFL’s

Steelers Through two games, Brady has completed 76.0 percent of his passes for 782 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions. And what’s most impressive about that is he’s doing it all with two big middle fingers directed at the NFL offices in New York City. Believe it or not, Brady is already the favorite (+250) to win the NFL MVP award for the 201617 season, and that’s with missing the first four games. The Steelers go into Sunday’s game with the 30th-ranked pass defense in the NFL, allowing 298 yards per game. Yeah, that ain’t improving this week. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin understands he has his hands full: “It’s typical New England ball in that you better respect all of the [receiving options] and understand that they’re prepared to stretch the field both horizontal and vertically.”

Three 3All Phases Bill Belichick will tell you over and over how important it is to be strong in all three phases of the game. That means special teams. And so far, the Patriots have been very strong. They’re allowing an average of just 16.5 yards per kick return this season, second-lowest in the NFL. They’re allowing an average of just 7.0 yards per punt return, too, ninth-lowest. That’s good, because the Steelers have speedsters Sammie Coates back there to return kickoffs and perhaps the most dangerous player in the league, Antonio Brown, back for punt returns. With Roethlisberger out, the Steelers will look to turn the game on special teams, but if the Patriots continue to play the way they have there, it shouldn’t happen.

Patrice Bergeron and the Bruins will be back in action on Saturday at the Garden when they face the hated Canadiens (7 p.m., NESN). The newlook Habs are led by Jeff Petry, who already has four points on the season. Carey Price, right, is expected to be in net for Montreal. GETTY IMAGES

Where to place your money in Week 7 The best bets in the NFL this weekend. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

Roll with these three road favorites in Week 7.

Bills (-3) at Dolphins The Bills appeared to be headed for disaster after starting 0-2 and firing their offensive coordinator, but they’ve reeled off four straight wins and are poised to make it five straight against Miami this week. The Dolphins managed to upset the Steelers and an injured Ben Ro-

ethlisberger last week but they’ve still been a bad home team of late, posting a 3-11 ATS (against the spread) record in their last 14 games in Miami. The Dolphins were torched for 235 rushing yards by the Titans two weeks ago and could meet a similar fate on Sunday as the Bills’ top-ranked running game comes into town. Miami has had no answer for their division rival of late, putting up a 1-5 record ATS in their last six contests with Buffalo. The combined score from last year’s tilts was 74-31 in favor of the Bills. Rex Ryan said his team is playing “boring football” right now, but the bottom line is they’re

winning. Expect Buffalo to keep the momentum going. The pick: Bills -3

Vikings (-2.5) at Eagles The only undefeated team in the league (also 5-0 ATS) comes into Philadelphia to play the slumping Eagles off a bye and they’re only favored by 2.5 points? It seems suspicious, but the Vikings aren’t the kind of team that the public likes to bet on. Sam Bradford is a not a star quarterback and has no high-profile options around him, but they’re still putting up 23.8 PPG. That’s thanks in part to

Expect Tom Brady to shred a weak Pittsburgh secondary on Sunday. GETTY IMAGES

the Vikings’ suffocating defense that’s forced 12 turnovers and only allows 287.6 YPG (second best in the league). Carson Wentz has turned into a pumpkin after a fantastic September and could be in for another rough day against Minnesota’s stoppers. Wentz was sacked five times last week and is now matched up against a Vikings team that’s amassed 19 sacks in five games (the thirdbest mark in the NFL).

Minnesota could win by two scores, so laying less than a field goal is of no concern. They’re the best bet of the week. The pick: Vikings -2.5

Patriots (-7) at Steelers The tale of the tape spells doom for the hot-andcold Steelers, especially with Ben Roethlisberger ruled out. New England is 2-0 straight-up and ATS since Tom Brady’s return, covering sizable lines over

the Browns and Bengals. Landry Jones, who fills in for “Big Ben” here, played poorly in relief last year, throwing two picks in his lone complete game. Bill Belichick is probably not losing much sleep game planning for Jones, especially since there is game tape of Jones readily available. Even if Roethlisberger were fully healthy this game appears to be a complete mismatch on paper. The pick: Patriots -7
