Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was badly vandalized, possibly with a sledgehammer, media and officials said Wednesday. A photo published in the online Hollywood publication Deadline.com showed Trump’s name scratched out, the emblem in the middle dislodged and chips from the star missing. The Republican presidential nominee, real estate developer and reality-TV star has been the focus of several large protests during his campaign appearances in California, where polls show he is trailing far behind Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The former host of the NBC show “The Apprentice,” Trump received his Walk of Fame star in 2007. REUTERS

RUSSIA BEEFS UP BALTIC FLEET AMID NATO TENSIONS

2

Russia is sharply upgrading the firepower of its Baltic fleet by adding warships armed with long-range cruise missiles to counter NATO’s buildup in the region, Russian media reported Wednesday. There was no official confirmation from Moscow, but the reports will raise tensions in the Baltic, already heightened since Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, and cause particular alarm in Poland and Lithuania, which border Russia’s base there. The reported deployment comes as NATO is planning its biggest military buildup on Russia’s borders since the Cold War to deter possible Russian aggression. Russia’s daily Izvestia newspaper cited a military source as saying that the first two of five ships, the Serpukhov and the Zeleny Dol, had already entered the Baltic Sea and would soon become part of a newly formed division in Kaliningrad, Russia’s European exclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES WINDOWS UPDATE WITH 3-D FEATURES

3

Microsoft on Wednesday announced a free update to its Windows operating system that lets users take photos and edit content in three dimensions, in an effort to bring excitement to its declining computing business. The Windows 10 Creators Update, coming in early 2017, lets users on mobile devices take three-dimensional photos by scanning an object as they walk around it. It also allows for 3-D graphics in Microsoft’s popular PowerPoint presentation software, and a new “Paint 3D” application lets people edit photos and other designs in three dimensions. The new features show Microsoft is hoping to stand out from the pack as rival Apple has eroded its grip on software. REUTERS CORRECTION

Due to a reporting error, the story “Are Amber Rose and Val Chmerkovskiy dating?” in Wednesday’s The Word column incorrectly said that Val Chmerkovskiy was Amber Rose’s partner on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” In fact, Rose was partnered with Val’s older brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Jackson: ‘Ongoing conversation’ needed on diversity of teachers While the district has a more diverse staff than others in the nation, there’s still a push for more educators of color. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us

Compared to school districts across the country, Boston is a leader in hiring educators of color. But to some school officials and City Councilor Tito Jackson, recruiting minority teachers needs to be a priority. Jackson, who serves as chairman of City Council’s Committee on Education, brought up the issue of diversity at Wednesday’s council meeting and said he intends to organize another public hearing on the issue. Jackson has been taking on this issue for years. He stressed the need for an “ongoing conversation” with BPS about increasing its diversity among educators. Emily Kalejs Qazilbash, BPS assistant superintendent of human capital, said data show the district is ahead of the curve nationwide in employing a diverse corps of educators.

NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/BOSTON

“Thirty-seven percent of our teaching force consists of teachers of color … The national average across all teachers in the country is 18 percent, so we like to say that we are pleased but not satisfied by this,” she said. Jackson maintains that the diversity of the district’s workforce should mirror BPS’s diverse student body. In 2015, 86 percent of BPS students were identified as students of color, but only 21 percent of teachers were black, 10 percent were Hispanic or Latino and 6 percent were Asian, according to BPS data Jackson included in

his order for a public hearing. Jackson also noted in the meeting that BPS is still under a court mandate which says that the district staff should be 25 percent black and 10 percent other minorities. “That is an incredibly low bar. I would agree with Councilor Jackson that our workforce needs to mirror our student population demographic,” said Qazilbash. She noted that 37 percent of the current teaching force consists of teachers of color. BPS faces a few challenges when it comes to securing a diverse work-

force. First, the pool of candidates that are teachers of color is not that large. And yet, while only one in 10 candidates in Massachusetts identify as a person of color, four out of 10 new teachers hired are people of color, Qazilbash said. Boston also doesn’t hire many new teachers each year because of the school system’s high retention rate, she said. “We only lose about 7 percent of our workforce a year,” she said. “It doesn’t mean that it’s not a problem — if we’re losing 7 percent of excellent teachers, it’s a problem — but nationally it can be as high as 20 to 25 percent a year.” Qazilbash said that just last week she spoke at a conference about Boston’s three-pronged effort to diversify its staff that includes initiating pipeline efforts to create a more diverse pool of applicants, re-evaluating its hiring process and focusing on retaining diverse workers. “Boston is seen as a leader,” she said. “Again, we’re not satisfied. There’s much more we can do … It’s something everyone around the country is interested in, and Boston serves as a model in these three areas.”

Expect transition to open tolling to bring delays to Massachusetts Turnpike Come Friday, commuters can put their days of fiddling between seat cushions for coins behind them. Cash will no longer be accepted at toll booths along the Massachusetts Turnpike. Instead, drivers will be charged by the state’s new all-electronic tolling system as they pass under gantries placed at 16 locations along Interstate 90. The gantries will assess tolls as they read E-Z Pass transponders, or if one is not detected it will take a photo of a license plate and bill the driver later. The switch should make for a safer and faster drive for Boston-area commuters often stuck in

bumper-to-bumper traffic, in part due to slowdowns at the highway’s tollbooths. Drivers will be able to cruise beneath the gantries at highway speeds and won’t ever again have to slow for tolls — at least eventually.

Until the state Department of Transportation demolishes the old-school tollbooths along the Mass Pike, commuters will endure continued slowdowns at tolling locations and traffic jams from construction. “The toll demolition

and road reconstruction projects beginning on Oct. 28 will impact travel for motorists along I-90, [the Massachusetts Turnpike], and drivers are encouraged to slow down in these active construction areas, consider traveling at off-peak hours, and evaluate whether mass transit might be a preferred option,” state Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin said. During the first 30 days of construction, drivers will be limited to speeds of 15 mph as crews work to demolish the center lanes at all 26 toll plazas. NORTHEASTERN OPENS ON-CAMPUS VFW POST, SECOND IN NATION CANDID CAMPUS Metro’s look inside Boston’s college campuses

Northeastern University showed its commitment to its student veteran population this week by opening a Veterans of Foreign Wars post on campus — only the second in the nation started by student veterans. Max Spahn, a 27-year-old Northeastern student veteran, is a founding member of the post and will serve as its commander. Last year, he was the president of the Student Veterans Organization on campus. He said that getting the chance to be a part of a new VFW post was so meaningful. “VFW state officials approached us and asked if we

wanted to be a part of making history,” he said. “It’s incredible, and it isn’t the first thing from Northeastern — they’ve been there from day one with everything they do for veterans.” Northeastern already has a Student Veterans Organization and the most generous financial commitment, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, in the commonwealth, according to Andy McCarty, the director of the university’s Veteran’s Services Center. But partnering with the VFW takes the school’s commitment to student veterans to another level, McCarty said. Services like the Student Veterans Organizations help form a community on campus, but by getting students involved with the VFW early, they’ll never find themselves without that support. “There’s a seamless transition once they graduate. Now it’s not that they’ve lost access to this community but that they’re already part of this community and can continue to be for the rest of their lives,” he said. “And tying into an organization that’s been around for more than 100 years,

it has even more resources, be it financial or knowledge-based.” Spahn discounts rumors that the VFW organization is “dying out,” that new veterans aren’t becoming members. “There are new issues that face veterans in college that don’t affect most of the VFW,” he said. By having student veterans join the nonprofit service organization, he said, “it’s a refresher — it keeps the ball rolling, allowing us to continue the long history of the VFW.”

For Spahn, the opening ceremony on Monday was “mindblowing.” The VFW national commander in chief installed him and the 11 other student veterans as VFW officers. The new post was named in honor of Robert R. Pirelli, a Northeastern grad and Army staff sergeant from Franklin, Massachusetts, who was killed in Iraq in 2007. The ceremony was held at the school’s Veterans Memorial, which commemorates students and alumni who have lost their

lives in service of the country. To become a member of the VFW, a person must have served in combat in a foreign country. Spahn described it as somewhat of a selective group, but highlighted that the VFW post on Northeastern’s campus is open to any member, not just current student veterans. “The fact that student veterans would graduate and miss that piece when they left the service, we can fill that role,” he said. BRIEFS Riders jump out windows after train fills with smoke Passengers panicked when an Orange Line train car filled with smoke during the rushhour commute Wednesday afternoon. Riders pushed out windows to jump out of the train, which was parked at Back Bay Station, as the car and platform filled with smoke around 4:30 p.m., according to WCVB. As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday there were no reports of serious injures, but the Boston Fire Department was on the scene. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the train was taken out of service after its engine caught fire. Downtown service from Haymarket to Jackson Square was stopped for about two hours due the disabled train. Commuter rail service was also temporarily suspended, but allowed to resume at slow speeds. Riders captured video from the scene, posting it to Twitter as they fled to safety. ERIN TIERNAN

Conn. man who ran Ponzi scheme as teen gets prison Ian Parker Bick, 21, of Danbury, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer in New Haven. A Connecticut man was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison after being convicted of bilking investors out of nearly $500,000 in a failed Ponzi scheme he ran while still a teenager, federal prosecutors said. Ian Parker Bick, now 21, of Danbury, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer in New Haven. The judge also ordered Bick to spend at least one year in home confinement following his release from prison, and to make full restitution to his victims. Jurors had convicted Bick last November on six counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. Jonathan Einhorn, a lawyer for Bick, was not immediately available for comment after the sentencing. Prosecutors said Bick began soliciting funds from friends, former classmates and their parents in 2012, when he was 17, using entities such as This

BRIEF US abstains for ďŹ rst time on UN call for end to Cuba embargo The United States on Wednesday abstained for the ďŹ rst time from a United Nations General Assembly vote on a resolution calling for an end to a U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, after opposing such measures every year for 24 years. For the 25th time, the 193-member General Assembly adopted the resolution with 191

votes in favor. Israel, which opposed the resolution last year, also abstained on Wednesday. Such resolutions are nonbinding, but can carry political weight. Communist-run Cuba and the United States, former Cold War foes, began normalizing relations in 2014. President Barack Obama has taken steps to ease trade and travel restrictions on Cuba, but only Congress can lift the full embargo.

The Republican-controlled Congress has resisted Obama’s call to lift Washington’s economic embargo after more than 50 years. Republican critics say Obama is making too many concessions to Cuba for too little in return, especially on human rights. The U.N. General Assembly applauded when U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power announced prior to the vote that the United

States would abstain. “Abstaining on this resolution does not mean that the United States agrees with all of the policies and practices of the Cuban government. We do not, Power told the General Assembly. “We are profoundly concerned by the serious human rights violations that the Cuban government continues to commit with impunity against its own people, she said. Bick was accused of promising high returns by promoting concerts and reselling electronics online, only to use money he raised for personal expenses such as hotel stays and jet skis, and to make assorted payments to some of his investors. In court papers, Einhorn had argued that no prison time was appropriate, citing the defendant’s immaturity and the greed of his victims, primarily adults, “seeking usurious interest rates in loaning him money. Prosecutors had contended that a 6-1/2-year or longer sentence could be justified. They said Bick had not shown remorse, and had after his conviction used investor money to gamble at the Empire City Casino in Yonkers, New York. REUTERS

The Republican Party’s grip on state legislatures could loosen in next month’s election as Democrats seek to link Republican candidates to the sinking fortunes of the party’s White House candidate, Donald Trump. Republicans, who have dominated control of legislatures since the midterm election in 2010, currently hold the majority in 67 of the country’s 98 partisan legislative chambers, while Democrats have 31. Nebraska’s single chamber is nonpartisan. More than 80 percent of the nation’s 7,383 state legislative seats are up for grabs and the race between Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton is expected to influence races further down the ballot.

The bipartisan National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) estimates 18 legislative chambers in 12 states could switch party control, including in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin. “More than threefourths of the time the party winning the White House also makes gains in state legislatures. So the odds are Democrats would pick up chambers and seats on the whole if [Clinton] wins,” said Tim Storey, a NCSL elections analyst. National opinion polls show Clinton leading Trump with just under two weeks to go until Election Day. Democrats are also getting a big boost for

Rebecca Hall didn’t want to sensationalize

The acclaimed actress talks about the dangers of playing a real person in “Christine.

You gave her this very declarative way of speaking. It’s a big voice, but the voice happened because I watched the 15-minute tape and thought this was someone uncomfortable in their own skin, and was barely capable of getting a word out that’s free or at ease or relaxed. It struck me that there was something performative about her. Of course, this was from a TV episode where she was interviewing someone, so of course she’d be performative. But it felt to me as though it ran deep. Imagine what happens to the voice: It starts to clamp up. The jaw gets tense. All of those things come from my instincts about those 15 minutes of footage. You can intuit a lot about

When Rebecca Hall got to Sundance, she had a bit of a surprise: The English actress was there with Antonio Campos’ “Christine,â€? a biopic about Christine Chubbuck, the Florida TV news reporter who shot herself on the air in 1974. And lo and behold, not only was there another film there about Chubbuck — Robert Greene’s â€œKate Plays Christineâ€? â€” but it was a documentary about the making a film about someone known primarily, even solely for her suicide might not be ethical. To her credit, the “Vicky Cristina Barcelonaâ€? and “The Giftâ€? actress never took the task lightly, and nor did the movie itself: It’s a deeply empathetic portrait that carefully

There’s only 15 minutes of footage of Christine Chubbuck that is available to the public. What other things did you have to go o of? Nothing. It was that and an article that was written about her at the time. I’m glad, in a way: Impersonation is problematic. It’s

I read a lot of books about what it’s like to be that depressed and really battle with a suicidal impulse. The movie’s very empathetic toward her, which is dierent from self-pity. That would have been sensationalizing. That would be a terrible manipulation, and an easy manipulation. That’s not the point. The point is to make you feel what it might have been like to be this person who did this quite unthinkable thing. At the film’s base is compassion. It’s made not because it wants to explore the act so much as the life that precedes it. I was wondering if you’d seen “Kate Plays Christineâ€? at this point. No. I’m nervous to watch a film that’s essentially about how you can’t do the thing that we did. [Laughs] It’s a really sensitive subject matter. It was never my intention to fan the flames of keeping her associated with this sensationalized, macabre, “Oooh, look at that,â€? scary thing that happened.

Hot to tot WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY They’re the cool younger sibling to your french fries. Here’s a roundup of the hottest tots around the hub. MEGAN JOHNSON

Allston -Brighton:

Duck Confit Tater TotsThe Independent PROVIDED

You’ll see many a partier nursing a plate of the White Trash Hash — tots with braised short ribs, two poached eggs and hollandaise — at Lulu’s Allston (421 Cambridge St.) every weekend. Same goes for Devlin’s (332 Washington St.) in Brighton, where you can be brought back to life with the Breakfast Tater Tots, a combo of bacon, cheese, a sunny-side egg and jalapeno.

Back Bay and the South End In the Loews Boston Hotel, Precinct Kitchen & Bar’s (154 Berkeley St.) Buffalo Bleu Cheese Thyme Tots are a consistent hit. Same goes for swanky steak house Grill 23 (161 Berkeley St.), where the Grill 23 Tots are doused in truffle oil. Swing by Clery’s (113 Dartmouth St.) to feast on the Truffle Tots, served with bacon and basil aioli, and don’t forget local mainstay TastyBurger (145 Dartmouth St.), with locations in the Fenway and Back Bay Station.

Downtown

You can class it up or keep it casual when you’re downtown. If you want to put on your fancy pants, head to Yvonne’s (2 Winter Place) where you’ll find the Crispy Tater Cubes: with joppiesaus (a Dutch fry condiment), farmhouse gouda and beet pickled egg. But if you’re just looking to kick back with your bros while watching the big game, check out The Harp (85 Causeway St.) or Sports Grille (132 Canal St.) for the Causeway Street Tots: potato barrel tots smothered in a cheddar cheese sauce topped with jalapenos, bacon and sour cream.

Southie If you want to be on the forefront of the tater tot revolution, head to Lincoln Tavern and Restaurant (425 W. Broadway) every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when Chef Nick Dixon is always cooking up creative options at his Test Kitchen Brunch. His popular Wake & Bake Tater Tots, topped with green pepperonata, crumbled bacon and smoked gouda cheese sauce, are a fan favorite.

Also in Southie, Coppersmith (40 W. Third St.) puts their own spin on Mexican fare with Tater Tot Nachos, topped with cheese, pulled pork, black beans, guacamole and salsa.

Camberville Want a healthier take on the tot? Head to ArtBar in the Royal Sonesta Hotel (40 Edwin Land Blvd.) for Sweet Potato Tots. The garlic Parmesan aioli they’re served with isn’t as nutritious, but it’s delicious. Over at Bukowski Tavern (1281 Cambridge St.) you can get a meaty mouthful of Poe Tots, named for owner Brian Poe. Those are covered in pork belly with black lava salt, horseradish cream, brussels sprouts and bacon. Equally as indulgent are the tots at Five Horses Tavern (400 Highland Ave.) where you can smother your taters with fried chicken, smoked ham, herb mustard and gruyere cheese. Finally, in Union Square, The Independent (75 Union Square) classes things up with duck confit tater tots, accompanied by gruyere cheese, caramelized leeks, demi mayo and champagne gastrique. Consider it an upgrade from the soggy tots of your elementary school lunch tray.

Cocktails for the rest of us You may fancy yourself a mixologist at home, but sometimes the rest of us just want a drank. Enter Kara Newman, cocktail enthusiast and author of “Shake. Stir. Sip.” a new book from Chronicle that explores the simple art of equal-part cocktails (meaning, drinks made with ingredients of equal parts) as imagined by different experts of the mixology world. While no Boston bartenders were interviewed for the book (“Sorry to say!”), Newman says she found an ideal match with bartender extraordinaire Todd Maul who will host the author for a signing and reception on Nov. 1 at his Kendall Square gastronomy lab/fine dining establishment, Cafe ArtScience. Newman and Maul had a chance meeting at the James Beard House in New York, where he was making “rose-based cocktails in martini glasses with petals that looked like koi fish floating in them.” The two hit it off, and it was a “happy coincidence” when Cafe ArtScience became Newman’s Boston area stop on her book tour. AND YOU THOUGHT TWO HOURS AT THE GYM WAS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART...

Actors Garen Scribner and Sara Esty in “An American in Paris.” ALL IMAGES MATTHEW MURPHY

Paris, je t’aime “An American in Paris” dares you to fall in love with a postwar City of Light. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

It was Gene Kelly who first swept audiences away to post-occupation Paris. His character, Jerry, a former American soldier, finds romance when he decides to stick around the City of Lights following World War II. The musical extravaganza “An American in Paris,” based on George Gershwin’s 1928 score of the same name, was made for the silver screen in 1951, but naturally found a home on stage when Craig Lucas adapted the production for Broadway’s Palace Theatre in 2015. The Tony-winning show now hits the road, as part of a national tour kicking off in Boston this month. We chat with Nick Spangler, who plays Henri Baurel — Jerry’s romantic rival and a Parisian aristocrat, whose bravery and goodness lie beneath his fanciful layers. Can we talk about Henri? His role on stage changes from who he originally is in the film. Yes, it’s a much bigger role [on stage] than it is in the movie. He’s more central to the love square — three men and one woman. Henri is more fleshed out in the show. You get an understanding of why there’s a deep love [with Lise Dassin] and why it’s so hard for him to accept her not loving him back. Most of the choreography in the film and Broadway productions is

heavily influenced by ballet. What was that like for you as a performer? Was it an intimating show to come into? We have 25 to 30 people who have danced professionally for dozens of years. I’m certainly not one of those people. [Laughs] I grew up with traditional jazzy musical choreography. It was scary, but some of the dancers also don’t have the 15 years of singing and acting experience I’ve had. We come from different worlds, and the show unites us both. It’s been a cool process to share knowledge between us.

If you go Oct. 25 to Nov. 6 Citi Wang Theatre 270 Tremont St. Tickets start at $45, citicenter.org

And I was “I’m your biggest fan.” That’s a great way to start an audition. Is there pressure to fulfill that nostalgic element for people who remember the film version of “An American in Paris,” while also appealing to new, younger audiences? The show itself, beyond my cast, is such an incredible piece of theater. It’s a period piece, like “Downton Abbey,” where it’s rooted in a timeframe, but is also contemporary in the way we deliver the script to the audience. They rewrote the script from the movie, and it’s so funny and poignant, but also dark and serious at the same time. We take audience members into the dark place Paris was coming out of at the end of four years of occupation. They didn’t paint broad strokes, but instead showed what Parisians were really going through at that time.

So we need to address this — you won “The Amazing Race” in 2008, do you think that’s helped your career at all? We’ve been watching my season backstage. [Laughs] We’re watching it during our dinner break on a projector in the dressing rooms. My season was eight years ago now, so I’m of a bygone era. It hasn’t had a huge impact on my career because it wasn’t a talent-based reality show, like “The Voice.” But it’s worked in my favor because directors and casting directors apparently love watching the show because it has nothing to do with their worlds. When I did “Giant,” I walked into the music room and [lyricist/ composer] Michael John LaChiusawas sitting there at the table. Before anyone said anything, he Nick Spangler was like, “I am your biggest fan.”

I ate a sushi burrito and I’m not better for it

Rachel Raczka eats her way through Boston. rachel.raczka@metro.us

Like most food trends, poke bowls and sushi burritos made their Boston debut long after they became hashtagable. (Though, I must note, the now defunct Wrapmi was way ahead of its time.) San Francisco’s Sushirrito and New York City’s the PokeSpot may have seemed like mere likable moments, but now, two new locations in Davis Square could change that for good. Maybe. The California chain PokeWorks claimed stake on Elm Street with a tentative fall launch for their bright, fresh Hawaiian-style poke bowls and fish-filled burritos called pokirritos. And right nextdoor is the brand new O’Ginger, a

RACHEL RACZKA

Japanese restaurant that also just happens to serve sushi burritos alongside rolls and hot plates. For O’Ginger, six sushi burrito variations are offered — ranging from the California Sunomo (deep-fried crab salad and cream cheese) to the Budda Roll (tofu and avocado), wrapped in soy paper. And like most decent burritos, they’re under $10. Assured by my waitress that the spicy tuna and vegetable Cosmo Sushi Burrito is the most popular option of the six, I indulged. It arrives cut in half, and is approximately five inches in diameter. It looks like sushi — but

giant sushi, should you expect anything else. You use your hands, nibbling a precariously compacted, oversized monster roll while quietly forgetting all we’ve learned from Jiro Ono. It tastes like sushi. If you like sushi, you’ll like this. Yummy sauce is, as promised, yummy. It is tasty and fine. It is, theoretically, a satisfying meal: protein-packed with a reassuring crunch of raw vegetables that makes you forget you’ve devoured a quarter cup of Kewpie mayo. However, it’s lacking. The ceremony of eating sushi — even the humblest, most westernized renditions of sushi— is bastardized by the sushi burrito. The ease and convenience of the sushi burrito — all the deliciousness of sushi with no need for fussy soy sauce receptacles or chopsticks — are duly noted, but the sensory experience is confusing. Everything about the process of eating a sushi burrito made me wish it were cut into six perfectly bite-sized pieces. So is this irony?

Have a paranormal vacation Do you dare to visit the most haunted places in the world?

With Halloween on the horizon, how about a seasonal getaway where you might see something far more memorable than fall foliage? Consider these spooky spots around the world, where the eerie encounters that have reportedly taken place include full-bodied apparitions of former royalty, ghostly orbs, mysterious echoes of cannon fire from bygone centuries and even a phantom truck that terrorizes drivers.

Rolling Hills Asylum Opened in 1827, Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, New York, once served as an infirmary, orphanage, tuberculosis hospital and nursing home, housing everyone from mentally unstable individuals to murderers. More than 1,700 bodies are buried in unmarked graves on the grounds, and reports of disembodied voices, full-body apparitions, doors slamming and furniture moving are all ordinary experiences here. Visitors can try their hand at rustling up the resident spirits during overnight ghost hunts, while historical and flashlight tours are tamer tour options.

The Alamo On March 6, 1836, nearly 2,000 Texans and Mexican soldiers were either wounded or killed in the Battle of the Alamo. But many of the tour guides and visitors at this significant San Antonio landmark contend that those perished souls never left. Reported supernatural activity includes sightings of American hero Davy Crockett, sounds of cannon fire and screams, and the longtime legend of six diablos, or devils, brandishing flaming swords.

Gettysburg Battlefield Remember the Alamo? Some spirits can’t forget it.

Clinton Road This desolate 10-mile stretch off Route 23 North in West Milford, New Jersey, has been spooking sojourners for decades. Reports abound about Satanic rituals in the nearby woods, a phantom truck that tailgates terrified drivers and a ghostly child who locals say haunts the perilous Dead Man’s Curve, throwing back the coins that people toss into the river below. Legends aside, the road is scary enough on its own, with no lighting and sharp turns.

The most legendary include Queen Anne Boleyn — who was beheaded in 1536 and has been known to walk around the White Tower with her head under her arm — Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Raleigh. But the extensive paranormal activity at The Tower of London also includes levitating shapes, disturbing noises and a bear — the grounds were briefly a zoo! Listen to the ghostly tales of the fortress during popular Twilight Tower Tours.

Edinburgh Castle Reigning above a Scottish city notorious for its murders, plague and torture, and with 900 years of its own history spanning executions, surprise attacks and purported witches burned at the stake, it’s no surprise that this landmark attraction is rich with paranormal lore. In fact, Edinburgh Castle was the site of one of the world’s largest paranormal investigations in 2001. Among experiences reported by the dozens of volunteers were ghostly touches, temperature drops and shadowy figures. Today, guided tours offer the everyday visitor a chance to see a specter of their own. Don’t miss the dog cemetery, the final resting place for officers’ beloved pets. Edinburgh Castle

The 53,000-squarefoot prison closed in 1995, but screams of tortured souls can often be heard during various paranormal-centric tours. During the day, you can explore the grounds, including cramped cells; by night, braver visitors can choose to be locked inside the formidable Gothic building by themselves until daybreak.

Hauntings are almost as prevalent as history at Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg Battlefield, the site of the largest battle in North American history that claimed 51,000 casualties on July 3, 1863. Visitors and ghost-hunting teams have heard (and recorded) screams, moans, and the sounds of guns and cannon fire. Off-ground

ghostly experiences are common, too, especially in surrounding buildings such as Gettysburg College and the Farnsworth House Inn. Ghost tours offer insight into the town’s various hotspots.

The Queen Mary More than 50 people are believed to have died aboard the historic Queen Mary ocean liner, which is now moored in Long Beach, California, as a hotel and tourist attraction that’s awash in spiritual activity. One prominent paranormal hot spot is the area on the hull that marks where the ship crashed into another vessel. Pounding and screams, perhaps from the souls of the sailors who met their watery end in the disaster, are often heard there. Other reports include ghostly swimmers in a pool with no water and sightings of long-ago crew members.

BOOK IT: PATRIOTS WILL HOST THE AFC TITLE GAME OPINION

DANNY PICARD @dannypicard

Mark it on your calendar. Sunday, Jan. 22, the AFC Championship Game, at Gillette Stadium. If the playoffs began today, the New England Patriots would be the No. 1 seed in the conference. That’s entering Week 8, with a 6-1 record, and just one more game before their bye in Week 9. With nine games left to play, it’s hard not to look at the rest of the Patriots’ schedule to see who — if anyone — has a chance to spoil their plans of hosting the AFC title game. There will be a few tests along the way, but at this point, nothing dangerous enough to change what’s already been settled: New England is the best team in the AFC, if not the

entire NFL. In a league where the unexpected seems to hit you over the head every single weekend, the Patriots are the only sure thing. Not only will the Pats win, but they’ll most likely cover the spread as well, especially with Tom Brady back under center. Since Brady’s return from his four-game Deflategate suspension, he’s thrown for over 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in just three games — all wins. And in case you’re keeping score at home, the Patriots covered the spread in all three of those games, twice as favorites on the road. The Pats are 6-1 against the spread this season, with their only loss against the spread coming in their only loss of the season. That was a little less than four weeks ago, when they were shut out 16-0 at home by the Buffalo Bills. How many teams do you know that get shut out by a

team in their own building, hit the road to take on that same team later the same month, and end up being a seven-point road favorite? There’s really only one. And that’s the Patriots. I know what you might be thinking. “What does covering the spread have to do with hosting the AFC Championship Game?” Well, at this rate, unless something unexpectedly drastic happens, they’ll probably be favorites in every game moving forward — yes, even at Denver in Week 15. And if that’s the case, then covering the spread would mean it’s a win in the standings. But back to that later. Right now, the Pats are in first place in the AFC East, and it’s the Bills who are below them at 4-3. A win in Buffalo this Sunday would all but seal the deal on another division title for New England. Then the question becomes, who can compete with the Patriots for the top spot in the AFC?

10, at Denver in Week 15 and one of the two road divisional games in New York and Miami. But to say I’m “scared” of those games would be a lie. The Patriots went 3-1 without Brady and, for the most part, without Rob Gronkowski. You could make the argument that Brady and Gronkowski are the two most dominant players to ever play the game at their respective positions. Without them, the Patriots were still able to win three of four. Now, Brady has returned and has promised to wreak havoc on the rest of the

Entering Week 8, the 5-2 Oakland Raiders are the No. 2 seed in the conference, followed by the 4-3 Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 3, the 4-3 Houston Texans at No. 4, the 5-2 Denver Broncos at No. 5 and the 4-2 Kansas City Chiefs at No. 6. After Buffalo, New England plays at home against Seattle, at San Francisco, at New York (Jets), at home against Los Angeles, at home against Baltimore, at Denver, at home against New York (Jets) and at Miami. The only games that aren’t guaranteed wins are against Seattle in Week

league. But the ultimate goal is still to have commissioner Roger Goodell hand him the Lombardi Trophy in Houston on Feb. 5. The best chance to get there is to have home field throughout the playoffs. Right now, the Patriots are sitting pretty in that top spot in the AFC. And I don’t see how they could possibly lose it. Patriots (6-1)

Vikings (5-1)

The Vikings’ distress is New England’s opportunity, and the Pats reclaim the top spot after an impressive road victory (Ben Roethlisberger or no) in Pittsburgh. The Patriots will look to revenge the lone blemish on their record in Buffalo this coming Sunday.

The Vikings defense was up to its usual tricks in Philly, but for the first time this unit was outshone by the one on the other side of the field. The first loss diagnosis doesn’t look too bad for the Vikings: The defense only allowed one scoring drive longer than 50 yards and the run game was effective.

Cowboys (5-1)

Seahawks (4-1-1)

Broncos (5-2)

The Cowboys can put some more distance between themselves and the second place team when Philadelphia visits Dallas for a battle of the NFL’s two most successful rookie signal callers: Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz. Ezekiel Elliott will try and continue to make his case for NFL MVP.

A shocking miss from Stephen Hauschka kept Seattle from stealing a victory despite being outgained by almost 200 yards. The disparity between offenses may be just as evident next week, when Seattle visits the Saints, who are averaging 29.3 points per game, or 11 more than the Seahawks.

Not that Broncos defenders were pushovers during the previous two losses, but this was the defense we expected to see all week, terrorizing Brock Osweiler for four quarters in his return to Denver. In addition, Trevor Siemian a outplayed the quarterback he replaced.

Eagles (4-2)

Raiders (5-2)

Steelers (4-3)

The Eagles have now beaten the team in the top spot twice. Their two most dominating performances of the season have come at home against the Steelers and the Vikings, both undefeated teams at the time, and that has to bode well for this team facing big games in the future.

Despite looking promising in early games, neither Jalen Richard nor DeAndre Washington delivered much offense in Latavius Murray’s absence, and he established himself with two touchdowns Sunday. In more good news for the Raiders, they play at Tampa this week.

It’s really the perfect time for a bye for the downward-spiralling Steelers. Let Ben Roethlisberger continue to heal, recover from two consecutive losses and get two weeks to make sure they won’t overlook the reeling Ravens, who have lost four straight games.

There’s no time to ruminate on goal line calls as the Packers come visiting in Week 8. But the tandem at running back in Atlanta is one to watch as Devonta Freeman was stuffed twice at the end of the game and Tevin Coleman outgained him despite having seven less carries against San Diego.
