3 things you need to know DONALD TRUMP’S HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME STAR VANDALIZED

1

Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was badly vandalized, possibly with a sledgehammer, media and officials said Wednesday. A photo published in the online Hollywood publication Deadline.com showed Trump’s name scratched out, the emblem in the middle dislodged and chips from the star missing. The Republican presidential nominee, real estate developer and reality-TV star has been the focus of several large protests during his campaign appearances in California, where polls show he is trailing far behind Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The former host of the NBC show “The Apprentice,” Trump received his Walk of Fame star in 2007. REUTERS

RUSSIA BEEFS UP BALTIC FLEET AMID NATO TENSIONS

2

Russia is sharply upgrading the firepower of its Baltic fleet by adding warships armed with long-range cruise missiles to counter NATO’s buildup in the region, Russian media reported Wednesday. There was no official confirmation from Moscow, but the reports will raise tensions in the Baltic, already heightened since Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, and cause particular alarm in Poland and Lithuania, which border Russia’s base there. The reported deployment comes as NATO is planning its biggest military buildup on Russia’s borders since the Cold War to deter possible Russian aggression. REUTERS

MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES WINDOWS UPDATE WITH 3-D FEATURES

3

Microsoft on Wednesday announced a free update to its Windows operating system that lets users take photos and edit content in three dimensions, in an effort to bring excitement to its declining computing business. The Windows 10 Creators Update, coming in early 2017, lets users on mobile devices take three-dimensional photos by scanning an object as they walk around it. It also allows for 3-D graphics in Microsoft’s popular PowerPoint presentation software, and a new “Paint 3D” application lets people edit photos and other designs in three dimensions. In a story published Wednesday, Oct. 23 on Oppenheimer Holdings, a logo of global asset manager Oppenheimer Funds was used in error. The two companies are completely separate. Metro regrets the error. Due to a reporting error, the story “Are Amber Rose and Val Chmerkovskiy dating?” in Wednesday’s The Word column incorrectly said that Val Chmerkovskiy was Amber Rose’s partner on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” In fact, Rose was partnered with Val’s older brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Audit cites ‘inferior’ standards for childcare in shelters City comptroller says inspectors found “conditions that would give any parent nightmares.” KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

City Comptroller Scott Stringer called for “bold action” Wednesday when he released a study on childcare in homeless shelters, and what his office calls “a failure to ensure that childcare workers undergo criminal background checks or enforce basic health and safety standards.” Stringer said city shelters are not beholden to the same health and safety regulations as childcare facilities outside of shelters. “We need bold action today to give homeless families a chance to break this devastating cycle tomorrow,” he said. “That we have such extraordinary regulatory loopholes should alarm all of us. We need to fix it — and we need to fix it now.” Stringer’s office released an audit in December that the office said showed “serious safety, se-

curity and health issues at shelters for families with children, leading to an unprecedented response by the Department of Homeless Services to address the findings.” The findings released today on the shelters examined by Stringer’s office found: 82 percent of childcare workers in the shelters had not been screened for either criminal convictions or records of child abuse; 49 percent of the childcare employees did not have valid training in child abuse

and maltreatment identification, reporting and prevention; 41 percent of the shelters had no fire sprinklers; 18 percent had no fire extinguishers; 9 percent of the designated emergency exit doors were locked from the inside at the time of inspection and were not equipped with an emergency push bar; 30 percent of the shelter-based childcare centers had insufficient outdoor space and 20 percent lacked an outdoor play area. “This investigation re-

veals that New York City has created two standards of care — an inferior system for homeless children and one for everyone else,” Stringer said. “We found a lack of oversight in shelters that we inspected, as well as conditions that would give any parent nightmares — and that is not acceptable. “There should be one health and safety standard for all childcare facilities in New York City, regardless of where their children go to sleep at night.”

Bronx ‘ripe’ for Apple Store, borough leaders tell CEO Tim Cook Bronx leaders are urging Apple to consider opening a retail store in their borough, noting that the company boasts 10 location in New York City, but none in the Bronx. “An Apple Store in The Bronx would complete your company’s presence within New York City, while also allowing your company to become part of the continued positive transformation of our borough,” states a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook dated Oct. 13 and signed by 26 borough leaders. hattan alone. To woo Cook, the letter went on to mention that nearly $9.5 billion in total development and 54 million square feet of new construc-

tion has occurred in the Bronx since 2009, including The Mall at Bay Plaza, The Hub/3rd Avenue and other hightraffic areas such as Fordham Road.

“Few brands are as recognized and admired as Apple, and an ‘Apple Bronx’ location would be another signal to the world that The Bronx is open for business. It is time for The Bronx to get its bite of the Apple!” the letter concluded. Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a news release that he is hopeful residents will see an Apple Store someday. “A Bronx location would be mutually beneficial not only to the company, but to the thousands of Bronxites who would take advantage of its services closer to home,” he said. Hospital records say sleepy aide muted elderly patient’s ventilator The surgical aide is accused of muting the device so it wouldn’t disrupt her sleep. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

A surgical aide at an East Harlem hospital is accused of muting the alarm on an elderly patient’s ventilator so she wouldn’t be disturbed while sleeping during her overnight shift. Angelita Williamson, a 17-year employee at the Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital, faces termination for allegedly muting the device while working her shift on Jan. 13, 2015, the New York Post reported. Williamson was tasked solely with monitoring the patient’s ventilator. Documents show that Williamson’s coworkers found her sleeping in the patient’s room with the lights off during her shift. During an administrative hearing, one

BRIEFS Protesters arrested after blocking George Washington Bridge About 10 protesters were arrested Wednesday morning for blocking traffic on the upper lanes of the George Washington Bridge into the city, PIX 11 reported. The demonstrators, part of the Laundry Worker Center’s #WeAreVisible movement that demands equal rights for immigrants, held a large banner that read, “Resist, organized, rise up!” Fox 5 reported, adding that the protesters chained themselves to the bridge. The upper level of the GWB was closed entirely during the protest, according to the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Twitter account. The department also tweeted that city-bound commuters could expect

liamson awake at one point. However, a third employee said she saw the aide awake in the patient’s room several times throughout the night. The patient wasn’t

harmed. Williamson faces termination for a “serious breach of her responsibilities,” an administrative judge said in the documents. Williamson, who remains on

the payroll but is not caring directly for patients, has until Friday to respond. “I was disappointed that after 17 years on the job that she wasn’t given the benefit of

the doubt, particularly when there were so many other health-care professionals in the vicinity at the time of the incident,” Williamson’s lawyer, Richard Washington, said.

Look at this big pile of guns the NYPD is destroying “abnormal delays” during the incident. The Laundry Workers Center “addresses the need for community-based leadership development geared toward improving the living and working conditions of workers in the laundry, warehouse and food service industries, as well as their families,” according to its website. Families looking to buy apartments in the Big Apple often have a standard list of demands: a safe area, a family-friendly neighborhood and space to accommodate their children. Maybe most important of all is the desire to be close to a top school. This idea is not a new one; after all, every parent desires to provide his or her child with a good education. However, this trend appears to be growing among international buyers. These parents are actively seeking homes that are close to international private schools, hoping to preserve their native language and culture within their children’s upbringing. One area in particular in which new apartment buildings are benefitting from this trend is the Upper East Side, specifically in Lenox Hill. The neighborhood is host to Lycee Francais de New York, a renowned private and bilingual French school, and also La Scuola d’Italia, an Italian, English and French trilingual multicultural school. Naturally, many international homebuying families are flocking to new residential developments in this area of the city, hoping to find the right international school for their children. The Charles at 1355 First Ave. is a development that is particularly benefiting from proximity to both of these schools. Frances Katzen, a lead broker for new development at Douglas Elliman, speaks of her experience selling to members of the international population. She has increasingly seen interest from these

families, and several of her recent buyers have children who were accepted into either LFNY or La Scuola d’Italia. Katzen says, “The Upper East Side has always been a popular destination for families, and New York City has always been a multicultural mixing pot.” The Charles has it all: a sophisticated, European-friendly design and a location within fiveminute’s walking distance to both international schools. The desirable combination yields the prime address for any European family looking to segue into American culture while preserving its native background. Plus, with the Second Avenue Subway expected to open this December, the Upper East Side is becoming an even more desirable residential neighborhood for any family. The Charles is not the only new Lenox Hill condo where sales are positively correlating with proximity to these schools. Two condo conversions at 300 E. 64th St. and 200 E. 62nd St. have also had success in the neighborhood, and offer one-bedrooms that are currently available starting from $1.05 million and $1.85 million, respectively. A new condo development at 1110 Park Ave. in Carnegie Hill joins the crew of successful buildings. It has just two remaining apartments for sale, both four-bedrooms and priced from $18 million. Another area in which the international influx is becoming increasingly prominent is NoMad, home to both Ecole Internationale de New York and the United Nations International School. Carlo Romero, a sales associate for residences at 88 & 90 Lex, attests to the interest in the property as a result of its location to these schools. These institutions, he reflects, “are not restaurants where you might go once or even twice a week if you’re a regular. They’re places you go twice a day if you’re dropping off and picking up your child.” For the expanded version, visit metro.us

Judge drops charges against limo driver in Long Island crash that killed four women Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota called the judge’s decision “extremely disappointing.” KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

A judge dropped all charges against a limo driver involved in the fatal crash in wine country that killed four women last year. Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho ruled that the indictment against the driver, Carlos Pino, 58, contained improper grand jury testimony, PIX11 reported. Sixteen charges were dropped against Pino, including criminally negligent homicide, assault and reckless driving. Although Pino no longer faces criminal charges, some families of the women have sued him for wrongful death,

PIX11 reported. “If I am wrong, I would like the DA’s office to appeal my decision, but I don’t think I am wrong,” Camacho said to the families, Newsday reported. Camacho told the families he “agonized over this decision more than any other.” Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said his office intends to appeal the “extremely disappointing” decision, PIX11 reported. Steven Romeo, 55, stepped on the brakes of his pickup truck too late on a Saturday in July and struck the limo with the eight women who were celebrating a birthday, Metro reported in 2015. Romeo was under the influence of alcohol at the time, authorities said. Brittney Schulman, 23, and Lauren Baruch, 24, both of Smithtown; Stephanie Belli, 23, of Kings Park; and Amy Grabina, 23, of Commack, were killed in the crash.

The other four passengers were injured. Romeo was charged with drunken driving at the time, despite being under the legal limit when he was tested. Prosecutors later decided that Romeo was not criminally responsible for the crash. “Pino’s actions were far from just careless,” Spota said, PIX11 reported. “Pino, an experienced professional limousine driver carrying eight passengers, turned blindly into a roadway when his view was completely blocked by another car. “Pino was driving a vehicle he knew or should have known could never make a safe U-turn under the circumstances. Justice Camacho’s decision appears to ignore this critical and distinguishing fact. Simply because others made the turn without harm did not make doing so safe or lawful when done blindly as Pino did.”

BRIEFS NYPD: Officer shoots knife-wielding man outside Brooklyn laundromat Officers shot a man who they say lunged at them with a knife Wednesday morning outside a laundromat in Brooklyn. Responding to 911 calls about a man wielding a knife, officers encountered Davonte Pressley, 23, at about 11 a.m. outside the Susan Laundromat in the East Flatbush neighborhood, investigators said.

The officers repeatedly told Pressley to drop the knife, but he lunged at them with the weapon and one officer shot him, police said. Pressley was hit three times in the chest. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was said to be in critical condition, police said. Officers recovered the knife at the scene. Precinct Chief Terence Monahan said investigators

The three quakes, which struck about two hours apart from each other, caused the collapse of several old structures, including a number of historic rural churches that were empty at the time. A series of strong earthquakes rocked a wide area of central Italy on Wednesday, striking fear among residents rattled by a deadly tremor in August, but there were no reports of casualties and few serious injuries. The three quakes, which struck about two hours apart from each other, caused the collapse of several old structures, including a number of historic rural churches that were empty at the time.

The first measured a magnitude of 5.4, the second 6.1 and the third 4.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About five hours after the first quake, Civil Protection department chief Fabrizio Curcio said “tens” of people were reported hurt but only four suffered serious, nonlife-threatening injuries. “The reports are not as catastrophic as we feared,” he said. All indications were that the damage would not approach that caused by the major quake that struck the Marche, Lazio and Umbria regions on Aug. 24, which devastated several towns and killed nearly 300 people. Amateur video footage on television showed clouds of dust rising as parts of buildings collapsed in some towns, including Camerino in the Marche re-

Top executive behind Dakota Access has donated more than $100K to Trump The top executive at the company behind the embattled Dakota Access Pipeline has donated more than $100,000 to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump since June, according to campaign finance disclosure records. The donations by Kelcy Warren, chairman and chief executive officer at pipeline operator Energy Transfer Partners, support the candidate seen by many as more likely to promote the U.S. oil and gas industry than his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Warren donated $300 to the Trump campaign during the primaries, and $2,700 to Trump during the general election phase of the campaign, for the maximum contribution allowed by a single individual during

an election. He also gave $100,000 to the Trump Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee that includes the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee, the Republican Party of Arkansas and the Connecticut Republican Party. The donations, first reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, were made before the U.S. government halted construction on a segment of

Energy Transfer Partners’ 1,100-mile Dakota Access Pipeline in early September following protests by Native American and environmental groups. The project, which would move oil from the highly productive Bakken shale formation to the Midwest and Gulf Coast, sparked violent clashes between security officers near the construction site and Native American tribe members and other protesters. Opponents have said the project will damage burial sites considered sacred to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and pollute the area’s drinking water. Warren has also given $66,800 to the Republication National Committee since Trump secured the nomination for the Nov. 8 election, The Guardian reported. REUTERS

Republican hold on state legislatures could slip in election The Republican Party’s grip on state legislatures could loosen in next month’s election as Democrats seek to link Republican candidates to the sinking fortunes of the party’s White House candidate, Donald Trump. Republicans, who have dominated control of legislatures since the midterm election in 2010, currently hold the majority in 67 of the country’s 98 partisan legislative chambers, while Democrats have 31. Nebraska’s single chamber is nonpartisan. More than 80 percent of the nation’s 7,383 state legislative seats are up for grabs and the race between Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton is expected to influence races further down the ballot.

The bipartisan National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) estimates 18 legislative chambers in 12 states could switch party control, including in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin. “More than threefourths of the time the party winning the White House also makes gains in state legislatures. So the odds are Democrats would pick up chambers and seats on the whole if [Clinton] wins, said Tim Storey, a NCSL elections analyst. National opinion polls show Clinton leading Trump with just under two weeks to go until Election Day. Democrats are also getting a big boost for

down ballot races with Clinton surrogates such as President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama on the campaign trail stumping for party candidates. Trump, on the other hand, is openly feuding with Republican leaders, many of whom distanced themselves from the candidate after a 2005 video surfaced this month in which he is heard bragging about groping women and making other unwanted sexual advances. BRIEF US abstains for first time on UN call for end to Cuba embargo The United States on Wednesday abstained for the first time from a United Nations General Assembly vote on a resolution calling for an end to a U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, after opposing such measures every year for 24 years. For the 25th time, the 193-member General Assembly adopted the resolution with 191

votes in favor. Israel, which opposed the resolution last year, also abstained on Wednesday. Such resolutions are nonbinding, but can carry political weight. Communist-run Cuba and the United States, former Cold War foes, began normalizing relations in 2014. President Barack Obama has taken steps to ease trade and travel restrictions on Cuba, but only Congress can lift the full embargo.

The Republican-controlled Congress has resisted Obama’s call to lift Washington’s economic embargo after more than 50 years. Republican critics say Obama is making too many concessions to Cuba for too little in return, especially on human rights. The U.N. Ian Parker Bick, 21, of Danbury, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer in New Haven. A Connecticut man was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison after being convicted of bilking investors out of nearly $500,000 in a failed Ponzi scheme he ran while still a teenager, federal prosecutors said. Ian Parker Bick, now 21, of Danbury, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer in New Haven. The judge also ordered Bick to spend at least one year in home confinement following his release from prison, and to make full restitution to his victims. Jurors had convicted Bick last November on six counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. Jonathan Einhorn, a lawyer for Bick, was not immediately available for comment after the sentencing. Prosecutors said Bick began soliciting funds from friends, former classmates and their parents in 2012, when he was 17, using entities such as This

BILLY BECERRA, METRO

Is Where It’s At Entertainment and Planet Youth Entertainment. Bick was accused of promising high returns by promoting concerts and reselling electronics online, only to use money he raised for personal expenses such as hotel stays and jet skis, and to make assorted payments to some of his investors. In court papers, Einhorn had argued that no prison time was appropriate, citing the defendant’s immaturity and the greed of his victims, primarily adults, “seeking usurious interest rates in loaning him money.” Prosecutors had contended that a 6-1/2-year or longer sentence could be justified. They said Bick had not shown remorse, and had after his conviction used investor money to gamble at the Empire City Casino in Yonkers, New York. REUTERS

US Marshals join manhunt for Oklahoma man suspected of double murder The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for an Oklahoma man suspected of wounding two police officers in a shootout, stealing a police truck, killing his aunt and uncle and making social media posts of his escape, authorities said on Tuesday. The Marshals Service said it was taking part in the search for 38-year-old Michael Vance, wanted in Sunday’s slayings in the town of Luther, about 30 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, but did not specify its role. Vance is suspected of killing Ronald Wilkson, 55, and his wife

Valerie Wilkson, 54, and trying to decapitate them at their home, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said. Vance is thought to have killed his aunt and uncle about three hours after the shootout with police, the sheriff’s office said. The officers were responding to a call of shots being fired. Both suffered wounds that were not life-threatening. Vance, who appeared to have been shot in the gunfight with the officers, also has an infectious disease that he may be trying to spread, local law enforcement said. In July, he was charged with child sexual abuse, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said. REUTERS

could be used to target civilians in Syria. The ships were part of an eight-ship carrier battle group — including Russia’s sole aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov — that is expected to join around 10 other Russian vessels already off the Syrian coast, diplomats said. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the troop contributions to a new 4,000-strong force in the Baltics and eastern Europe were a measured response to what the alliance believes are some 330,000 Russian troops stationed on Russia’s western flank near Moscow. “This month alone, Russia has deployed nuclear-capable Iskander missiles to Kaliningrad and suspended a weapons-grade plutonium agreement with the United States,” Stoltenberg said, also accusing Russia of continued support for rebels in Ukraine. Those ballistic missiles can hit targets across Poland and the Baltics, although NATO officials declined to say if Russia had moved nu-

clear warheads to Kaliningrad. NATO’s aim is to make good on a July promise by NATO leaders to deter Russia in Europe’s ex-Soviet states, after Moscow orchestrated the annexation of the Crimea peninsula in 2014. NATO’s plan is to set up four battle groups with a total of some 4,000 troops from early next year, backed by a 40,000-strong rapid-reaction force, and if need be, follow-on forces. As part of that, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced a “battle-ready battalion task force” of about 900 soldiers would be sent to eastern Poland, as well as another, separate force equipped with tanks and other heavy equipment to move across eastern Europe. “It’s a major sign of the U.S. commitment to strengthening deterrence here,” Carter said. Britain’s Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said Britain would send an 800-strong battalion to Estonia, supported by French and Danish troops, starting from May. The United States wants its troops in position by June. London is also sending Typhoon fighter aircraft to Romania to patrol around the Black Sea, partly in support of Turkey. REUTERS

Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Wednesday suspended a Pentagon order that California National Guardsmen repay thousands of dollars in enlistment bonuses and tuition assistance they had received by mistake. “While some soldiers knew or should have known they were ineligible for benefits they were claiming, many others did not,” Carter, who is in Europe meeting with U.S. allies, said in a statement. “This process has dragged on too long, for too many service members,” he said. “Too many cases have languished without action. That’s unfair to service members and to taxpayers.” About 10,000 California National Guard troops had been ordered to repay enlistment bonuses — some of more than $15,000 — that were improperly given to them. The Los Angeles Times, which first reported on the bonuses last week, said audits revealed the California Guard had overpaid

troops in order to entice them to join and meet enlistment targets more than a decade ago. The Obama administration has been criticized by some military families and Republicans — including presidential candidate Donald Trump — for not doing enough for veterans. Carter, speaking to reporters in Brussels as he announced the suspension, said the law required the Pentagon keep open the option of someday again seeking repayment. “But the point is that … there won’t be any more collections until we put in place a process that can expeditiously and fairly deal

with these issues,” he said. Senior Defense Department officials have been told to assess the bonus situation and establish a “streamlined, centralized process” by the start of next year, Carter said in the statement. “The objective will be to complete the decision-making process on all cases as soon as possible — and no later

than July 1,” he said. The issue has caused outrage in Congress. Members from both parties have called on the Pentagon to drop efforts to reclaim the bonuses. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement on Wednesday that Congress would “continue to work on any reforms necessary to ensure this doesn’t happen again.” REUTERS

Ciara is pregnant! The good news just keeps on coming for the Wilsons. Last week Ciara announced that she’d been named the new global brand ambassador for Revlon. She performed an intimate set for the cosmetics company in a loose fitting ensemble that now makes perfect sense. The 31-year-old was hiding a baby bump. Ciara and her new husband, Russell Wilson, the 27-year-old quarterback for the

Seattle Seahawks, are expecting their first child together. The singer has a 2-year-old son with rapper Future, to whom she was previously engaged. Ciara and Wilson both posted the good news on their Instagram accounts with a picture of the two resting their hands on Ciara’s growing belly. Now that she’s preparing for another bundle of joy, Ciara is really going to have to put that “1, 2 step” to work.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ church accused of abuse

Chip and Joanna Gaines, the hilariously quirky and wholesome couple behind the HGTV hit show “Fixer Upper,” are very open about their religious beliefs. Chip and JoJo are both devout Christians. But their spiritual affiliations are coming into question after some sinister accusations against their church. Former members of Antioch Community Church in Waco, Texas, described the church to In Touch as frightening and cult-

ish. Another member claims she was kicked out of the church after she was diagnosed with schizophrenia but not before it attempted to perform an exorcism on her! The founder, Jimmy Seibert, denies using the word “exorcism” but claims the church believes in “demonic oppression.” Chip says that Antioch has a “mandatory” place in his life, but to stay on the safe side, we’re only offering our homes for the fixing.

Naomie Harris didn’t want to play an addict But the acclaimed actress and Bond figure made an exception for “Moonlight.” Pearl River’s old storefront in SoHo closed in March due to a rent hike. GETTY IMAGES MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Pearl River Mart is back

matt.prigge@metro.us

Naomie Harris makes a point of not playing drug addicts. It wasn’t long ago — and it’s still the case, frankly — that a lot of black actors get stuck playing those types or roles. The English-born actress wanted to avoid that. And she has: She’s played strong female characters going back to “28 Days Later,” through taking on Winnie Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” right up to being our current Moneypenny in the Bond films. So what led to Harris breaking her vow for “Moonlight,” Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed drama, in which she plays Paula, the crack-addicted mother of a shy boy in a low-income Miami neighborhood who we watch, over three segments, grow into a hard, grill’d-up man? Harris said Jenkins wanted to avoid stereotypes, especially having been raised by a mother who battled her own addiction. We talk to Harris, 40, GETTY about IMAGES learning about a subject she knew little about, the beauty in this sometimes brutal

For Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed film “Moonlight,” now in theaters, Naomie Harris spent only three days shooting all of her scenes as Paula, our protagonist’s drug-addicted mother, seen over three separate time periods. A24

film and how it’s also quite funny, too. This is quite a heavy film, but it also has moments of real transcendence. It’s even funny sometimes. You know what? Last night at our New York premiere, people were laughing left, right and center. That’s the first audience that has laughed that much. I didn’t even realize how many jokes were in the movie. They were finding a lot of [actress] Janelle Monae’s lines

really funny. It’s like, “Oh yeah, that is pretty funny.” It’s incredible to think you shot all your scenes, set over three separate time periods, in only three days. You had to navigate a lot of ground. The work was done before. I had a month to prepare, so I did all my research then, all my interviews with people with addictions. YouTube is a minefield for research. I saw some amazing documentary on YouTube about addiction, from the ’80s. It had interviews with crack addicts. Then how I get into character is doing this, what we’re doing: I imagine that I’m being interviewed. So these junket interviews are actually helpful! They are! I imagine an interviewer asking, “Where did you grow up? What is your mum like?” And I answer them as though I’m being interviewed in the voice of the character. That way I find a whole narrative behind them. Through that I find their voice. Then it comes alive.

Addiction is something so many of us can’t even comprehend. What was your “in” to it? I don’t even drink coffee, and I don’t drink alcohol. So for me it’s a massive jump to play a crack addict. So how do I get an “in” to this? This one woman described it so beautifully: She said it was like the greatest love affair. Because when you start taking drugs, it’s like a lover who treats you so well, makes you feel amazing and makes you feel so confident and happy. There are amazing sensations that you have. But the more you get into it, it becomes like an abusive lover. Your body gets more and more immune to the drug, so you need bigger and bigger doses, just to feel the high. You’re always chasing the high you got at the beginning. But you can never recreate those. You start hating the drug, because you don’t want it. But you’re addicted to it. And you start hating yourself as well. Then you’re addicted to this awful goddamn spiral. That for me was what made me feel it so deeply. That I can really understand.

Fans of trinkets, mini Buddhas, sky lanterns and more, rejoice! New York’s beloved Asian emporium Pearl River Mart is slated to reopen in Tribeca in May 2017 — under founders Ming Yi and Ching Yen Chen’s daughter-in-law, Joanne Kwong. In March of this year, the iconic shop was forced to close its doors due to a rent hike. It’s a fate that befalls so many New York businesses; Pearl River’s demise was an especially tough one because its story was so inspiring. Its founders, husband-wife duo Ming Yi and Ching Yeh Chen, first opened it in 1971 as a mom-and-pop shop in Chinatown, a “friendship store” to introduce Chinese merchandise and culture to New Yorkers. (Their initial shipment of goods came soon after Nixon removed the trade embargo; it was the first from China in

more than 20 years.) In 2003, they expanded into a 30,000-square-foot department store in SoHo. Their daughter-inlaw Joanne Kwong, the former counsel to the president and vice president of communications at Barnard College, has a vision for the shop’s reincarnation. She plans to modernize the merchandise, increase the brand’s social media presence, and feature capsule collections and collaborations with a host of Asian-American designers and artists. “The goal is to evolve the store from a traditional brick and mortar to a leading-edge retail experience while also preserving and honoring Pearl River’s incredible legacy,” she says. In mid-November, Kwong will open a temporary pop-up shop at 395 Broadway until the store officially opens in May 2017. KATE MOONEY

Rebecca Hall didn’t want to sensationalize

The acclaimed actress talks about the dangers of playing a real person in “Christine.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

When Rebecca Hall got to Sundance, she had a bit of a surprise: The English actress was there with Antonio Campos’ “Christine,” a biopic about Christine Chubbuck, the Florida TV news reporter who shot herself on the air in 1974. And lo and behold, not only was there another film there about Chubbuck — Robert Greene’s “Kate Plays Christine” — but it was a documentary about the making a film about someone known primarily, even solely for her suicide might not be ethical. To her credit, the “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “The Gift” actress never took the task lightly, and nor did the movie itself: It’s a deeply empathetic

portrait that carefully avoids easy explanations for her decision, and spends most of its time on her life leading up to her final act. There’s only 15 minutes of footage of Christine Chubbuck that is available to the public. What other things did you have to go off of? Nothing. It was that and an article that was written about her at the time. I’m glad, in a way: Impersonation is problematic. It’s

got to come from you, no matter how extreme the categorization. It’s got to come a place inside of you. Otherwise it will never be honest. I read a lot of books about what it’s like to be that depressed and really battle with a suicidal impulse. I don’t think there’s anyone on this planet who doesn’t have someone in their circle who hasn’t battled with mental health issues. And I had my personal experiences with occasional anxiety and depression,

though I’ve never been diagnosed or put on medicine. I’ve had dark moments, but who hasn’t? Engaging with all those things about one’s self is where you build from. It’s all emotional.

GETTY IMAGES

You gave her this very declarative way of speaking. It’s a big voice, but the voice happened because I watched the 15-minute tape and thought this was someone uncomfortable in their own skin, and was barely capable of getting a word out that’s free or at ease or relaxed. It struck me that there was something performative about her. Of course, this was from a TV episode where she was interviewing someone, so of course she’d be performative. But it felt to me as though it ran deep. Imagine what happens to the voice: It starts to clamp up. The jaw gets tense. All of those things come from my instincts about those 15 minutes of footage. You can intuit a lot about a person from a first meeting.

The movie’s very empathetic toward her, which is different from self-pity. That would have been sensationalizing. That would be a terrible manipulation, and an easy manipulation. That’s not the point. The point is to make you feel what it might have been like to be this person who did this quite unthinkable thing. At the film’s base is compassion. It’s made not because it wants to explore the act so much as the life that precedes it.

I was wondering if you’d seen “Kate Plays Christine” at this point. No. I’m nervous to watch a film that’s essentially about how you can’t do the thing that we did. [Laughs] It’s a really sensitive subject matter. It was never my intention to fan the flames of keeping her associated with this sensationalized, macabre, “Oooh, look at that,” scary thing that happened.

A more holistic take on dinner Ayurvedic cooking comes to the East Village at Divya’s Kitchen. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

For a city that loves its healthy eating trends, New York has a serious lack of restaurants specializing in ayurvedic cuisine. The original guide to cooking for wellness has been a life’s work for chef Divya Alter, who’s finally opened Divya’s Kitchen in the East Village to bring its ancient principles to modern food. “Ayurveda is the science that teaches how to maintain balance in terms of three things: diet, routine and environment, the three pillars of health,” she explains. “Food is meant to keep the body in balance, heal it, support our human journey, it’s meant to be our friend.” Though ayurvedic cooking is traditionally associated with India, Divya’s Kitchen (25 First Ave.) is taking a global

Divya’s Kitchen

EVA KIS

approach to its menu. Its seasonally driven menu spans Italy to Asia — “I like to ayurvedize dishes” — from vegetarian lasagna made with almond milk bechamel to paneer in a raisincranberry sauce. The restaurant makes a line of fresh juices (which can be served paired with the menu!) as well as several ingredients like coconut milk and mozzarella cheese in-house (“fresh means it carries living energy”), as well as a menu of fresh juices. The restaurant is vegetarian; much of the menu is also gluten-free. The dishes at Divya’s Kitchen won’t be individually customized the way an ayurvedic diet would be, which is based on a long list of factors ranging from age to body type. Instead, Alter designed her menu to ease some of the most common problems of life in the city. “Especially in New York, there is so much pollution, so much stress and noise, and a lot of people suffer from indigestion because of it,” she says. “We try to keep our foods nonacidic and avoid foods that are harder to digest, so after you eat you feel light and energized.” That means not just atten-

tion to avoiding inflammatory foods, but the details, too: Instead of vinegar, Alter uses lime juice, grains and beans are soaked overnight to make them easier to digest, and nothing is deep-fried. Alter relies heavily on a wide range of spices to flavor her dishes, with a lot of “warming” clove, cinnamon, ginger and black seed for the colder weather. Though there are no strictly good or bad foods in ayurvedic cooking, you won’t find nitraterich items like potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers on Alter’s menu, which can irritate the gut. Also out are onions, mushrooms and garlic, though for an entirely different reason: “Ayurveda recommends them as medicine; if you eat it every day, garlic is a natural antibiotic so it can diminish the friendly bacteria in the gut.” Alter, a yoga practitioner, has another reason for avoiding them: onions and garlic make the mind restless, which can be good if you need the energy for a marathon, but not at dinner when you’re going to bed shortly afterward. “Modern nutrition is very limited only to the nutrition facts of different ingredients,” she explains. “Ayurveda goes much deeper, it gives us knowledge of postdigestive effects, especially if you combine the wrong foods.”

Get to know the Alamo Meet indie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse’s long-awaited Brooklyn location. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Lovers of beer, genre films and dine-in movie theaters, Brooklyn’s long-awaited Alamo Drafthouse has finally arrived. The Texas-based chain’s 25th location sits on the fourth floor of downtown Brooklyn’s City Point mall (445 Gold

St.), with seven screening rooms ranging from 40 to 190 seats. Over five years in the making, the theater officially opens this Friday, Oct. 28, as both a serious place for movies and one that shows “Jason Takes Manhattan,” while serving a larger selection of craft beers than your local bar. We’ve got your guide to everything you need to know about Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn.

1

Every ticket costs $14.50, and seats are assigned when you buy them. The high-back

chairs are well padded, and don’t worry if you end up “having” to sit in the front row — they’re not shoved up as close to the screen as most theaters, and recline electronically to prevent neck strain.

2

Six of the theater’s seven screens will be devoted to new releases, split evenly between blockbusters and indie films. The seventh theater will host repertory screenings, as well as smaller films that deserve a spotlight, because your TV will never be the best way to watch movies.

3

Even the decor is film nerd chic.

The Alamo loves movies, and movie people love the Alamo. The theater has lured Kevin Bacon to a “Tremors” screening, and “Star Wars Episode VIII” director Rian Johnson did live commentary for his film “Looper.” Brooklyn’s theater has already lined up guest appearances by

House of Wax ALL PHOTOS EVA KIS

Melanie Lynskey for a screening of her trippy 1994 thriller with Kate Winslet, “Heavenly Creatures,” and a regular series called Shouting at the Screen co-hosted by comedian Wyatt Cenac that explores notorious blaxploitation movies with live commentary and drinking games.

4

The Alamo has a notoriously strict no texting/talking policy. You get one pass, then it’s curtains and no refund. Just wait until you see the prescreening PSA for how seriously they take keeping theaters a sacred space.

5

Even their decor is film nerd chic. The theater’s signature carpet, which you’ll recognize from “The Shining,” welcomes guests in the lobby area, along with a photo op where you can pretend to be King Kong clinging to the Empire State Building. The Brooklyn theater

has its own custom wallpaper patterned after projector lenses, and old posters of Turkey’s notorious knockoffs of Hollywood films hang everywhere.

6

You’ll want to get to your screening early, not for the previews but a drink at House of Wax, the theater’s bar that doubles as a museum of realistic wax figures, from celebrity busts to medical oddities. They used to travel the world in shows that served as the same sort of window onto the world that movies offer now, curator Ryan Matthew Cohn explains. He and other docents will be giving guided tours of the collection, though it’s free to browse on your own.

7

You can order food and drinks from a sprawling menu right to your seat before or dur-

ing the movie. Just fill out a card with your order — dishes include Alamo’s famous queso, fresh baked cookies and even a tofu and quinoa bowl — and a list of 48 New York beers on tap. Place the card in the slot at the top of your table (every couple of chairs shares one nonfolding surface), and an eagleeyed member of the staff will collect it silently.

With Halloween on the horizon, how about a seasonal getaway where you might see something far more memorable than fall foliage? Reports abound about Satanic rituals in the nearby woods, a phantom truck that tailgates terrified drivers and a ghostly child who locals say haunts the perilous Dead Man’s Curve, throwing back the coins that people toss into the river below. Legends aside, the road is scary enough on its own, with no lighting and sharp turns.

The Tower of London Believed by many to be London’s most haunted building, this circa 11th-century fortress is bursting with stories of spirits roaming within. The most legendary include Queen Anne Boleyn — who was beheaded in 1536 and has been known to walk around the White

But the extensive paranormal activity at The Tower of London also includes levitating shapes, disturbing noises and a bear — the grounds were briefly a zoo! Edinburgh Castle Reigning above a Scottish city notorious for its murders, plague and torture, and with 900 years of its own history spanning executions, surprise attacks and purported witches burned at the stake, it’s no surprise that this landmark attraction is rich with paranormal lore. GOODELL, NFL NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER — NOW SID ROSENBERG OPINION Sid Rosenberg co-hosts “The Bernie and Sid Show on WABC in New York. You can reach him on Twitter @SidRosenberg

Gang Green may still be in the playoff mix The Jets’ win over the Ravens gave them new life. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens could be the impetus for a Jets resurgence, especially considering the way the schedule shakes out. New York is sitting at 2-5, but with an upcoming slate that includes the Browns (0-7), Dolphins (3-4) and Rams (3-4) — before their Nov. 27 tilt with the Patriots (6-1) — Gang Green might be able to gain some traction and get back into the AFC Wild Card race. The Ravens game was a good start, particularly on defense, which means the Jets may be able to hearken back to a time when the defense did the heavy

lifting. They made need to, considering their quarterback issues — one who is out for the year with a torn ACL, and the other with an injured ego. Gang Green limited the Ravens to just six rushing yards on 12 attempts, which was the lowest single-game output allowed in franchise history. It marked the fewest single-game rushing yards allowed by the Jets since surrendering 12 yards to the Dolphins last November. Todd Bowles’ defense has had its moments since he arrived, as the Jets have held opponents to the three lowest single-game rushing totals in franchise history. Baltimore could be the springboard for New York to start to flex its muscle again. At least, that’s what some of its members are hoping. “These last couple of weeks, we’ve been in a

slump as a team,” noted cornerback Darrelle Revis. “I think everyone was. [But] I think it [their defensive performance] can carry over … Moving forward, I think we can build off this win.” New York didn’t allow an offensive touchdown to Baltimore. The last time that happened was December 2014 at Tennessee, and the last time that occurred on home soil was against Arizona in December 2012. A main reason for Sunday’s performance was the creativity of Bowles and defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers, and the versatility of the players. Even without Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (ankle) and stellar rookie linebacker Darron Lee (ankle), the Jets were able to rattle Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco with exotic blitzes and coverages, and a cha-

meleon scheme. Lining up customary defensive end Sheldon Richardson at linebacker at times has been a brilliant wrinkle in recent games. Richardson, who has been criticized over the years for showing a terrifying lack of judgment and for being selfish, was all over the field. He tallied his first full sack of the season to go along with a team-high eight tackles -— three for

loss. Richardson was more than happy to primarily play at his usual defensive end spot in the 3-4 defense (three lineman and four linebackers), sans Wilkerson, but also displayed the type of team-first mentality that’ll further ingratiate himself with the coaching staff by accepting some linebacker duties. The 6-foot-3, nearly 300 pounder was everywhere a Raven ball carrier was. He takes pride in the

fact that he’s the only one of the defensive linemen on the team who is deft enough to guard “running backs, tight ends, [and] slot receivers … I hold my own.” Richardson reasoned that playing so many positions, even if miscast, is “building my resume.” That type of versatility can serve Gang Green well going forward, especially once Wilkerson and Lee return.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: HIGH ON THOMPSON, ASIATA; SOUND ALARM ON JORDY NELSON FANTASY FOOTBALL

BILL DUBIEL

Week 8 marks the beginning of the “bye week blues — with six teams on bye, it’s more important now than ever to be alert on the waiver wire. Be sure to check out Rotoballer.com’s Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Tool for up-to-the-hour waiver wire advice and ideas, and to follow me @ Roto_Dubs for quick-hitting news and analysis.

Thompson could thrive thanks to Matt Jones’ miscues Matt Jones entered the 2016 as the starting running back for the Washington Redskins, but his position could be in very real danger thanks to a number of costly mistakes. Since the beginning of his rookie season

(2015), Jones has coughed up the football eight times, with two of those coming this past Sunday against Detroit. Chris Thompson, on the other hand, has emerged as a sturdy second option for the Redskins, particularly in the passing game. Thompson was excellent once Jones was benched on Sunday, tallying 73 yards on 12 carries. The Redskins seem to be losing patience with Jones, and as he loses touches the dynamic Thompson will pick them up.

NFL sleepers of the week Each week we will identify three players worth taking a shot on in deeper leagues. Ladarius Green, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers – Green has been on the PUP list since the preseason with a lingering ankle injury, but he is set to begin practicing this week and makes for a great stash for the stretch run.

Matt Asiata sneaks into flex range While Jerick McKinnon is the bigger name, it’s actually been Matt Asiata making an impact at running back for the Vikings lately. Asiata has been quietly out-performing McKinnon in recent weeks, with 110 rushing yards on just 26 carries as compared to McKinnon’s 79 yards on 31 carries since Week 5. Asiata has also been the favorite on passing downs, with nine catches for 71 yards in that time

Washington running back Chris Thompson is worth a look. GETTY IMAGES

frame compared to McKinnon’s two catches for 15 yards. On top of all of that, McKinnon is currently dealing with a minor ankle injury, and while it shouldn’t cost him any playing time it certainly leaves the door open for Asiata to continue to carve out a bigger role.

to his ancillary receivers Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and the newly-discovered hybrid player Ty Montgomery. Nelson has just six catches for 77 yards over the last two weeks, which is well behind all three of the aforementioned players as far as fantasy production is concerned.

Marqise Lee, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars – The number three option in the Jacksonville oense has seen at least seven targets in each of the last ďŹ ve weeks.
