3 things you need to know PUTIN SAYS US HYSTERIA OVER RUSSIA AN ELECTION PLOY

1

Russian President Vladimir Putin said American politicians were whipping up hysteria about a mythical Russian threat in the U.S. presidential campaign as a ploy to distract voters from their own failings. Putin, addressing an audience of foreignpolicy experts gathered in southern Russia, said he found it hard to believe that anyone seriously thought Moscow was capable of influencing the Nov. 8 election. The U.S. government has formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyberattacks against Democratic Party organizations, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has accused Republican rival Donald Trump of being a Putin “puppet.” “Hysteria has been whipped up in the United States about the influence of Russia over the U.S. presidential election,” said Putin, calling it a ruse to cover up for the fact that the U.S. political elite had nothing to say about serious issues such as the country’s national debt or gun control. MAN ARRESTED FOR DEFACING TRUMP’S WALK OF FAME STAR

2

A man was arrested Thursday for defacing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s star a day earlier on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles with a sledgehammer and a pickax, police said. A man who identified himself to local media as James Lambert Otis was captured on video in a hard hat and reflective vest as he hacked at the star before dawn Wednesday on a bustling sidewalk in Hollywood. Trump, the former host of NBC’s reality TV show “The Apprentice,” received his Walk of Fame star in 2007. City police Thursday arrested a man for felony vandalism in connection with the stunt and took him to Men’s Central Jail, police spokesman Aareon Jefferson said in a phone interview. Jefferson said he could not immediately provide the man’s name. Otis had planned to turn himself in to police later Thursday morning after holding a news conference, according to Los Angeles-based City News Service. REUTERS

Are ballot ‘selfies’ illegal in New York? No comment, says New York State’s Board of Elections. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

If you had the #Selfie song queued up and were ready to sing “I’m gonna drop my vote, but first, lemme take a #selfie,” you might want to reprogram your Election Day playlist. Many people — including early voters like Justin

Timberlake — have been excited to share their role in American history by snapping a few photos while they make their voice heard. But is the ballot selfie legal? New York State’s Board of Elections Communications Director Valerie Vazquez told Metro that the board’s comment is that the state can’t comment on pending litigation. “There is lawsuit against the state saying the rule is basically too re-

strictive and it’s essentially asking to lift the ban,” Vazquez said. Vazquez added that current law considers a ballot photo a misdemeanor, but again, the law is under litigation. “Each election season, I see people put photographs of their ballot on social media, only to see them take it down after their friends and family warn them it’s illegal,” attorney Leo Glickman of Stoll, Glickman & Bellina, who is representing the

three who brought the suit, told CBS2. Some people see a ballot selfie as an expression of free speech and political excitement. The laws on ballot selfies vary from state to state, according to the Associated Press, so getting a clear answer isn’t always easy. The hardest decision for some on Nov. 8 won’t be who should be the next POTUS; the tough call could be which selfie is honestly worth a misdemeanor.

TWITTER CUTS JOBS WITH EYE ON 2017 PROFIT; VINE DISCONTINUED

Twitter said Thursday it would cut 9 percent of its global workforce to keep costs down even as quarterly results eclipsed Wall Street’s beaten-down expectations, lifting shares that had fallen after a failed effort to sell the company. More than 300 Twitter employees will be affected by the layoffs as part of a broader restructuring, a figure similar to an earlier round of reductions announced a year ago. Separately, the company announced it would discontinue Vine, a video app launched in 2013 that played brief clips on a repeat loop that struggled to compete with Facebook’s Instagram. The reductions of staff and services were blunted somewhat by the backdrop of third-quarter revenue growth that slowed sharply but topped analysts’ expectations. REUTERS

A Burger King in Queens pulled a bit of a prank last Sunday by disguising itself as a McDonald’s for a few hours. While the Rego Park location stayed in its ghost of McDonald’s costume, the sign in front of the eatery read: “Boooooo. Just kidding, we still flame grill our burgers. Happy Halloween.” Some reports suggested a commercial in the making, but when Metro contacted Burger King’s main office, we were given the photos (right) and the video, but a spokewoman told us “this is all the information we can provide.” KIMBERLY M. One dead, 13 injured in apartment building fire on Upper East Side A third-floor victim was saved in a daring rescue from the roof. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

A massive fire roared through an Upper East Side apartment building early Thursday morning, leaving one man dead and 13 people injured, though firefighters were able to save one resident in a daring rescue. The blaze began around 3:20 a.m. on the first floor of a five-story apartment building at 324 E. 93rd Street. Firefighters discovered one man dead in a third-floor apartment. Eight firefighters and four residents suffered minor injures. A man screaming for help from a window was rescued by firefighters on the roof of the building, the FDNY said. “The gentleman on the fifth floor was trapped with fire coming up the stairs and fire blocking the fire escape, and his two options were really to jump or to burn, and

a firefighter was lowered from the roof in very dangerous fire and heat conditions,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. “That was the only way in which this man could have

been saved.” Jessica DeMorris, 26, and Rocco Clauss, 24, were sleeping when they say a fire broke out in the living room of the groundfloor apartment where they have been staying.

“I ran through the living room with both dogs in my arms completely engulfed by flames,” Clauss told NY1 News. Clauss and DeMorris say they had been housesitting and dog sitting for

BRIEFS Petition urges mayor to legalize bodega cats in NYC A negative review in Yelp complaining that bodega cats are a health code violation and the ensuing catfight on social media about the issue has prompted a Brooklyn resident to start a petition to legalize cats in city bodegas. “The fact that cats are not legal in bodegas but dogs are legal in restaurants is a complete joke. Allow cats in bodega and keep dogs out of restaurants,” states the Change.org petition created by Nicholas McMurry. The petition, which has 224 of the 500 signatures needed in order to reach Mayor Bill de Blasio, also noted that cats would “keep rodents out of food products and keep other pests at bay. You don’t want to see (fecal) matter from rodents in a bodega right?”

The snafu started after Yelp reviewer Diane D. gave S.K. Deli Market, on the corner of Second Avenue and East 5th Street in the East Village, a onestar review. “I’ve ordered from SK before and the sandwiches are pretty good. Today, however, I decided to stop in and grab a sandwich. To my dismay- there was a cat, perched upon some cases of Budweiser in the middle of the store!! Besides being allergic to cats, I wonder what the health code says about this?” Diane said in the Sept. 9 review. Though the review has since been deleted, it lives on thanks to screenshots from other users, which helped it go viral—and land S.K. dozens of positive reviews. NIKKI M. MASCALI

friends. The fire commissioner said the fire spread quickly partly because the couple left the door open when they fled. More than 250 firefighters and rescue work-

ers from units across the city responded to the alarm. The century-old building is a “complete loss” and two neighboring buildings were damaged, fire officials said.

Firefighter feels foot, pulls unconscious man from burning home

Ladder 155 firefighter Gerard McManus made the rescue at a home in South Jamaica on Wednesday. FDNY

A firefighter moving blindly through a smoke-filled home in Queens on Wednesday managed to rescue a man who was unconscious on the floor, the FDNY said. Crews were responding to a fire at a home on 140th Street in South Jamaica when a firefighter forced his way through two rear doors to search for residents. “I started in the kitchen first,” said firefighter Gerard

McManus, according to an FDNY Facebook post. “There was so much smoke I couldn’t see anything. When I made my way into the dining room I felt a foot … and pulled him out the way I came in.” The man was revived at the scene and treated for burns and smoke inhalation at a local hospital. “What we did here today is what we train for everyday,” Lt. Brendan Corrigan said. NIKKI M. MASCALI

How many billionaires would it take to buy New York City?

Judge OKs historic $265 million settlement in 2015 Amtrak derailment The deal is believed to be the largest of its kind in U.S. history. A federal judge Thursday signed off on a record $265 million settlement over an Amtrak passenger train crash in Philadelphia in 2015 that killed eight people and injured about 200 others, court records showed. The settlement approved by U.S. District Court Judge Legrome Davis of Pennsylvania is believed to be the largest of its kind in U.S. history. Federal law caps the damages for any single disaster at $295 million. The deal calls for Amtrak and its insurers to make the payments for claims arising from the derailment to a courtsupervised trust by Feb. 28, 2017. Two court-appointed masters will review victims’ claims under the agreement. “The settlement program is a fair, uniform and efficient method to compensate those that lost loved ones as well as the more than 200 injured survivors,” Thomas Kline, whose law firm Kline & Specter represents multiple crash victims, said in a statement. Last December, Congress raised the damages cap for a single rail accident to $295 million from $200 million in the wake of the Philadelphia crash. Lawyers for the plain-

tiffs said the Amtrak settlement was equal in value to the maximum allowed payout when taking into account inflation and the likelihood that litigation would drag out through the years. Amtrak said it was grateful to the court for its involvement but would not comment further. “Amtrak appreciates the guidance and involvement of the Court in this matter,” Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said in a statement. “Because of the ongoing nature of the litigation Amtrak will have no further comment at this time.” The Amtrak train

was traveling through Philadelphia on May 12, 2015 with 243 people on board when it entered a curve at more than twice the recommended 50 miles-perhour speed limit and derailed, mangling one car and knocking two others on their sides. The engineer driving the train was likely distracted by radio traffic when the crash occurred, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a report released in May. The incident could have been prevented if the track had been outfitted with a safety system known as positive train control, the agency’s report concluded. REUTERS

Trump pushes Melania back onto campaign stage The couple appeared in a taped ABC interview broadcast on Thursday less than two weeks before the Nov. 8 presidential election against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Melania Trump will give two or three speeches in the final days of the presidential race, Republican candidate Donald Trump said in a television interview, apparently surprising his wife. Melania, who has mostly remained off the campaign trail to care for the couple’s 10-year-old son, was asked if she was going to campaign for her husband in the homestretch. “We will see,” she said. “My priority is my son Barron, and I support [my husband] 100 percent and I’m there for him every time he needs me.” Trump indicated that

time is now. “She is actually going to make two or three speeches,” he interjected, drawing an “Oh!” from his wife. Melania has stayed largely out of the public eye since the Republican National Convention in July, when she gave a speech that borrowed portions of first lady Michelle Obama’s address to the 2008 Democratic convention. “She’s amazing when she speaks,” Trump said of his third wife, a former model from Slovenia. “She is an amazing public speaker. She’s agreed to do two or three speeches, and I think it’s going to be big speeches, important

speeches.” The New York real estate mogul, who is making his first run for office, is down an average of 5.4 percentage points in national opinion polls against Clinton, a former senator and secretary of state, according to Real Clear Politics. Trump has been struggling to attract women voters after a series of damaging revelations and allegations about his treatment of women. Several women have accused him of making unwanted sexual advances, including groping or kissing, in incidents dating back to the early 1980s, according to reports in various news outlets. REUTERS

From the start, skeptics have speculated Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency is the political equivalent of riding a barrel over Niagara Falls — a risky, publicity stunt. Their theory: Trump never really expected to become a nominee; he just wanted to draw attention, snare some headlines and boost his business profile. Maybe score another TV show. Or go on tour with Taylor Swift. Who knows what rich people dream of ? To be sure, Trump has rarely missed a chance to promote his brand with his presidential bid. This week, even amid the final frantic days of the race, he took time to cut the ribbon on his new hotel just blocks from the White House. In a way, that’s kind of how he began. He entered the race by riding an escalator down from his corporate headquarters, to proclaim against a backdrop of American flags, “It’s great to be in

TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the book “My Year of Running Dangerously.” @tomforemancnn

Trump Tower!” When he racked up Super Tuesday wins in the primaries, he celebrated by plugging his private club in Florida, saying “It’s so great to be at Mar-a-Lago!” When he flew to Scotland to open a new resort in the

wake of the Brexit vote, he briefly wished the Brits “a lot of luck” then spoke at length about the virtues of his golf course. Trump has bragged repeatedly on the campaign trail about the value of his name no matter what it is attached to: steaks, bottled water, land, airlines, office buildings, casinos, a magazine, and on and on. Never mind that some examples aren’t exactly rip roaring successes — Trump has steadily used his brand to push his policies, and his policies to push his brand. This week, the raging question has been: If Trump loses, will his brand suffer? I think it might. For about as long as it takes to iron a hundred-dollar bill. But I suspect once the roar of the election is over, his barrel will pop to the surface, and a grinning Donald Trump will once again be laughing all the way to the bank.

Trump has fallen behind Clinton in opinion polls ahead of the election amid a series of accusations from women that Trump groped them or kissed them without their consent. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made her first joint campaign appearance Thursday with one of her most powerful supporters, first lady Michelle Obama, at a North Carolina rally to urge young people and women to vote. Clinton, a former first lady who lost the 2008 Democratic nomination to then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama before becoming his secretary of state, praised Michelle Obama for standing up for the rights of girls and women worldwide, drawing a sharp contrast with Republican nominee Donald Trump. “I wish I didn’t have to say this. ... But indeed, dignity and respect for women and girls is also on the ballot in this election,” Clinton told a crowd of about 11,000. “And I want to thank our first lady for her eloquent, powerful defense of that basic value.” Michelle Obama’s stinging denunciation of Trump after a leaked 2005 video showed him making lewd remarks and bragging about groping women was seen by many as one of the campaign’s most striking condemna-

tions of the New York businessman. Without naming Trump, Obama took him to task again in North Carolina, asking the crowd which candidate they wanted to represent their daughters from the White House. “We want a president who takes this job seriously, and has the temperament and maturity to do it well. Someone who is steady. Someone who we can trust with the nuclear codes,” Obama said. “I would not be here lying to you: I believe with all of my heart that Hillary Clinton will be that president,” she said. The latest RealClearPolitics poll average shows Clinton with a nearly sixpoint national lead over Trump, fueled by declining support for the former reality TV star among women. Although Michelle Obama was critical of Clinton during the hardfought 2008 Democratic nominating race, any trace of bitterness appeared long behind them. The two women showed an easy rapport. They embraced and smiled. Obama called Clinton “my girl” and made a point of telling the crowd they were tight. “If people wonder: Yes, Hillary Clinton is my friend,” she said. Clinton promised to take good care of Obama’s White House vegetable garden if she won and wistfully praised the athletic first lady’s dancing skills. “If only,” Clinton said. REUTERS

NJ man pleads guilty to charge in Rutgers cyberbullying case Dharun Ravi, 24, the New Jersey man accused of recording his roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another man, was convicted in 2012 on 15 charges, including several bias intimidation counts and invasion of privacy. The former Rutgers University student whose high-profile cyber bullying conviction was overturned last month pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted invasion of privacy, prosecutors said. Clementi, 18, committed suicide three days after learning Ravi broadcasted images of him and the man online to a group of other students. Clementi’s death sparked a national

debate over cyberbullying and discrimination against gays and lesbians. Ravi, who faced up to 10 years in prison, will be sentenced to the time he has already served on the charges, which was 30 days, allowing him to avoid further prison time for the third-degree offense. Neither Ravi’s attorney nor a representative for the Clementi family could immediately be reached for comment. “Reaching the plea agreement was a reasonable way to resolve the case in view of the appellate court decision, which dismissed a series of criminal bias charges that had been leveled against the defendant by a grand jury in Middlesex County,” prosecutor Andrew Carey said in a statement on Thursday. Last year, the state’s Supreme Court struck down

part of the law under which Ravi was charged as unconstitutionally vague. That led a New Jersey appeals court in September to throw out Ravi’s conviction. Prosecutors had conceded that Ravi’s guilty verdict on those counts should be vacated but argued that his conviction for other crimes, including invasion of privacy and witness tampering, should stand. But the Appellate Division of the state Supe-

BRIEF NATO seeks to manage Russia’s new military deployments President Vladimir Putin’s highprofile military deployments aim to showcase Russian power in any global confrontation with the West, NATO officials say, but the alliance will not seek to match Moscow’s actions. Curtis Scaparrotti, the U.S.led alliance’s top commander, told allied defense ministers on Wednesday that more than

120,000 Russian troops took part in exercises in September which culminated with the firing of a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, diplomats said. As Russia’s sole aircraft carrier passed Europe’s shores this week, reports of its warships equipped with nuclearcapable missiles in the Baltic alarmed allies. The alliance is also concerned by Moscow’s deployment of ballistic Iskander

missiles in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. “The main challenge is not individual events or deployments,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters. “It is the overall picture, where we see a substantial increase in Russia’s capabilities at sea, in the air and on land; exercises with a more aggressive patterns.” Stoltenberg declined to say publicly what he thought Russia’s overall aims are. But

Scaparrotti, who is also a U.S. Army general, told defense ministers that Russia was seeking, in military parlance, “escalation dominance,” according to people briefed on the discussions. That strategy holds that a military power can best contain and control conflicts if it is dominant at each step in an escalation with an adversary, potentially all the way to the biggest threat, nuclear weapons.

The Justice Department charged 61 people and entities on Thursday with taking part in a scam involving India-based call centers where agents impersonated Internal Revenue Service, immigration and other federal officials and demanded payments for nonexistent debts. The scam, which had operated since 2013, targeted at least 15,000 people who lost more than $300 million. Twenty people were arrested in the United States on Thursday, while 32 individuals and five call centers in India have been charged, the department said in a statement. The defendants, including 24 people across nine states, were indicted by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

U.S. Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell said at a news conference that the United States will be seeking the extradition of those based in India and warned others engaged in similar schemes. According to the indictment, the operators of the call centers in Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat, “threatened potential victims with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay taxes or penalties to the government.” Victim paymentswere laundered by a U.S. network of co-conspirators using prepaid debit cards or wire transfers, often using stolen or fake identities, the statement said. The call centers also ran scams in which victims were offered shortterm loans or grants on condition of providing good-faith deposits or payment of a processing fee, it said. The investigation involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Treasury, Homeland Security, Secret Service and police officials, the Justice Department said. REUTERS

NJ ‘Bridgegate’ judge delays closing arguments U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton told jurors to return Friday morning for closing arguments, which are now expected to last into Monday. Closing arguments in New Jersey’s “Bridgegate” trial were unexpectedly postponed by a day on Thursday because of an unspecified “legal issue” that must be resolved, the trial judge said. U.S. prosecutors in Newark had been scheduled to begin summing up the evidence against two former allies of Gov. Chris Christie who are accused of orchestrating lane closures at the busy George Washington Bridge to New York City in September 2013 in an act of political retribution. Prosecutors and de-

fense lawyers, who also left for the day, declined to comment on the nature of the issue. Jurors have heard more than a month of testimony in the trial of Bridget Anne Kelly, Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, and Bill Baroni, former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, operator of the bridge. Prosecutors say the two conspired with another Port Authority executive, David Wildstein, to create massive gridlock in Fort Lee, New Jersey, to punish the town’s mayor for refusing to back Christie’s

2013 reelection campaign. The scandal damaged Christie’s political standing as he was beginning a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. The governor is a top adviser to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Christie, who has not been charged with wrongdoing, has said he was unaware of the lane closings at the time. But testimony at the trial from several witnesses have contradicted Christie’s claim. Wildstein, who pleaded guilty and testified for the government, said he and Baroni discussed the plot with Christie as it was unfolding. Baroni and Kelly each took the stand and said they spoke with Christie about the lane closures, though they said they believed that the closures were part of a legitimate traffic study. REUTERS

The Amtrak train was traveling through Philadelphia on May 12, 2015 with 243 people on board when it entered a curve at more than twice the recommended 50 mph speed limit and derailed, mangling one car and knocking two others on their sides. THE FUN STARTS HERE

The stars of ‘Good Girls Revolt’ want to save Melania from Trump Amazon’s new series is a ’60s period piece that tackles sexism we still see today. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

The stars of “Good Girls Revolt” want you to know their show is not a “Mad Men” knockoff.

While both are ’60s workplace dramas with a flair for the music and fashion of the era, the tone and verve of Amazon’s new 10-part series feel more like if Peggy Olson got a spin-off. Created by Dana Calvo (“Narcos”), Season 1 of “Good Girls Revolt” opens in 1969, just as “Mad Men” was winding down. It tells the true story of

how 46 women at Newsweek sued their bosses for gender discrimination in a landmark 1970 case, detailed in the book “The Good Girls Revolt” by Lynn Povich. The series’ heroines Jane (Anna Camp, “Pitch Perfect” and “True Blood”), Patti (Genevieve Angelson, “Backstrom”) and Cindy (Erin Darke, “Love and Mercy”), are

20-somethings who work at the fictionalized News of the Week at a time when the men were reporters and the women were resigned to the role of researchers — essentially, they did the heavy lifting, but never saw a byline. But this story is unmistakably theirs. “Don Draper is the voice of ‘Mad Men’ and

he is bitter and jaded. These three girls are full of light and hope,” says Camp, (who, incidentally, you may recognize as Draper’s mistress Bethany van Nuys in “Mad Men” Season 4). We sat down with the three stars to talk about how the show tackles issues, from sexual discrimination to the wage gap, that make it so relevant

today — and how the costuming helped them all seamlessly transition back to the era. This show could not be premiering at a more apropos time. There’s a scene when Joy Bryant’s character (based on the ACLU lawyer Eleanor Holmes Norton who galvanizes the women to sue) says, “Ten is better

WKND be in a national dialogue about what sexual assault is. For me, it makes it very exciting that Trump is saying the things he is saying, because if people are going to think those things, let’s say them out loud. Darke: If Trump weren’t running for president, if we had a sane human being [instead] and less of this national conversation and less relevance for this show, I’d take the trade! I was horrified while making the pilot by how relevant it was, the everyday inequalities and workplace interactions with men and women. I already was like, “This show is so relevant! And then we made the season, and stepped off set and into this election, and I was like, “Holy s—, it’s like Amazon is paying him!

wknd than two, two is better than one, that made me think of how Trump’s video led to so many women coming forward about sexual assault. Angelson: The other thing that Joy [Bryant] says is, she references the quote “I freed a thousand slaves, I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves. I think that’s a lot of what this dialogue has created. Kelly Oxford saying [on Twitter] “tweet me your first sexual assault and everyone having to

Camp: I want to woo Melania [Trump] over and be like, “Leave, leave, we’ll give you a guest star on the show! We can save you and your daughters!â€? Each of your characters starts out at such a dierent place. Can you talk a little bit about your respective arcs for the season?

Darke: Cindy starts in this place where she’s not happy, but she’s almost not confident enough to think that she deserves that happiness. A lot of the journey in this season for Cindy is realizing that she wants something more, trying to get it and sometimes trying to find it in the wrong outlet, while learning that maybe she can provide that for herself. Angelson: Patti is this character who loves to get away with stuff. Getting away with dressing differently from everybody else at work, having a secret relationship. ‌ She thrives on bucking convention and getting attention for it. For her, the series starts in a place where she can’t thrive. She meets an obstacle that she cannot toy with. It’s just a barrier to the thing that is deep, deep in her essence. How did you guys get into the feel of the era while preparing for the roles? Camp: Our costume designer was amazing. And hair and makeup. When I

world, you put on your costume and you just don’t feel like everyday yourself anymore. Favorite outďŹ ts? Camp: Oh, I love my white coat. I did not take home my pointy bra. [Laughs] Camp, Angelson, Darke AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

get out of the makeup and hair trailer and I have to walk out, my head is so heavy from all the pins! You slip on the girdle and the panty hose, and you’re completely transformed. Angelson: One of the magical things I find about doing period work is you just step onto the sets and you just feel like you’re in a different

Angelson: Don’t make me pick among my children. They’re my babies, I love them all so much. There’s a scene in which I go to a jazz club and I’m wearing this long green dress that just made me feel like I was the queen of the ocean. I only got to wear it in that scene, and it was like, “Dammit, so little exposure, for such a moment! Darke: I like to think that if we come back for Season 2, [our favorite outfits] will just be in our

What is the vibe among the cast? Did you guys spent a lot of time hanging in NYC? Angelson: We would go to [co-star] Daniel Eric Gold’s bar Mr. Fong’s, shout it out! Also Grand Army. Camp: No, don’t shout them out because then they’ll be full of people! We’d have pool parties at my house because it was so hot. Darke: When I get tired I get silly, we’d sing songs. 20 THINGS TO DO

Kid-friendly Halloween in the city Party animals march through the Bronx Zoo.

Harvest festivals, Boo at the Zoo and more ways to spend the holiday with your little pumpkin. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn kate.mooney@metro. us

Halloween is almost here! Once you get your kiddo suited up, the next step is figuring out how to celebrate. Luckily, the city is full of spooky fun for little ones and their families.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Harvest

JULIE LARSEN MAHER/CWS

Festival The free festival at DUMBO’s waterfront park may only be three hours long, but it is packed to the brim (of a witch’s hat!?) with fun activities. From a “Thriller” dance lesson to face painting with the Broadway cast of “Cats” and classic lawn games like potato-sack races, there are plenty of ways to stay active and spirited. Naturecentric events are also built into the schedule, with an opportunity to “meet the animals” on the Pier 6 Lawn (including turtles, coastline

birds and creatures in the intertidal touch tank). Finally, the bravest little ones can visit the witch in the haunted marsh. Free, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Pier 6, brooklynbridgepark.org

Central Park Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Flotilla Spend the afternoon at Central Park feeling spooky while admiring the fall foliage. The family-friendly day includes a costume parade, pumpkin carvings, ghost stories and

spookiest of all: a live bat encounter, put on by the Organization for Bat Conservation! The day culminates at dusk, when 50 illuminated pumpkins float across the Harlem Meer. Free, Sunday, Oct. 30, 3:30 p.m.7 p.m., 110 St. btw. Fifth and Lenox Aves., centralparknyc.org

Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade This scary stroll has been a staple of Halloween in the familyfriendly neighborhood since 1986. With this year’s theme of “Daring Duos, Thrilling Trios

and Superb Heroes,” the parade kicks off at Seventh Avenue and 14th Street and ends at the Old Stone House at Washington Park, followed by music and dancing at J.J. Byrne Playground. Beginning at 4 p.m., kids can trick or treat at businesses on Seventh and Fifth Avenues, which will be handing out candy. Free, parkslopeciviccouncil.org

Boo at the Zoo This Saturday and Sunday will be the last days of the Bronx Zoo’s Halloween festivities. Your little human party

animals can trick or treat at stations set up throughout the zoo, walk in a costumed parade from the rhino garden to the grizzly bears, navigate a hay maze at the Butterfly Patio, and descend into the World of Darkness to take in a display of jack-o’-lanterns carved to look like bugs, bats and more creepy creatures. A magic show, craft station and live music round out the festivities. Check the daily schedule and purchase tickets online at bronxzoo.com. $16.95/adults, $12.95/kids 3-12, free kids under 3

Felicity Jones stars opposite Tom Hanks in “Inferno,â€? the third ďŹ lm based on a Dan Brown book. COLUMBIA PICTURES

Too cool for the tabloids

( ( (

Felicity Jones is in the midst of the biggest year of her career. First up, the British actress and Oscar nominee is starring as Dr. Sienna Brooks opposite Tom Hanks in Ron Howard’s “Inferno,â€? the third film based on Dan Brown’s best sellers. Soon we’ll see her as Rebel Alliance fighter Jyn Erso, in “Star Wars: Rogue One.â€? Despite being on the cusp of global fame, Jones says she’s still got a lot to learn and explains why she prefers the quiet life. How was it to work with Ron Howard? I’ve always said that you learn something with every project. On this occasion, “Infernoâ€? showed me that nothing is carved in stone regarding work, because it was something completely different to what I’ve done. I learned from Ron and Tom that you have to enjoy your job for it to be noticed on the big screen.

What can you tell us about your character? I liked the way they show her as a strong, intelligent woman. Throughout the story, she performs various tasks that put her in the spotlight. I think the burden she has shows the potential of women without falling into feminism or excesses or weaknesses. You’ve worked alongside some huge names in your career. Have you ever felt intimidated? Not to date. I’ve had great support from my colleagues, both on film and television. I have never felt threatened or belittled during any projects. Because that is like being afraid, and if there is something I am sure of, it is how to do my job. Obviously, there is always criticism or comments when I think, “That

would probably not be said to another actor. There is still much to achieve to have gender balance in this industry, but I think great steps have been made.

You’re playing a Rebel Alliance ďŹ ghter in “Star Wars: Rogue One.â€? Did you get to kick some butt? It was exhausting work. I had to take kung fu classes and learn how to fight. I left behind any English elegance. In the end, I surprised myself at what I was able to cope with. Jyn Erso has a strength and power to her beyond the physical, and that’s why I think she is very similar to the character of Princess Leia. Jyn is smaller than the others around her, but she has enormous strength. This could be a careerdeďŹ ning year for you. Are you starting to attract more attention from the press and paparazzi? I think I’m too boring for them and I need to be more outrageous [laughs], because of the kind of films I do. GABRIELA ACOSTA SILVA

The prose doesn’t get better. It is, however, consistently and distractingly hilarious. Expecting a brain-dead page-turner, this writer couldn’t stop laughing enough to get past page 40. Finishing simply would have taken too much time. Those 40, enjoyably terrible pages were more joyful than watching the inevitable, joyless movie from a decade back. It’s even worse with “Inferno,â€? the third hang with renegade symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks, uncharacteristically indierent). — it doesn’t even look fancy. Handsome Italian and Turkish locations aside, it looks cheap, rushed, edited to get this over with, not to untangle the book’s convoluted plot. This time our academic hero — the Indiana Jones of art heads, it seems, and less a nerd than a walking daily trivia app — is out to thwart a plot to poison half the world’s population ‌ by aunting his knowledge of Botticelli murals and sculptures of Dante! Waking up in a hospital room with supermigraines and selective amnesia, he goes “Three Days of the Condorâ€? with a plucky nurse (Felicity Jones). The on-the-lam May-December not-lovers (thankfully) try to escape from assassins and three separate groups of government agents, one of them, maybe two, maybe all possibly bunk.

Howard et. al. don’t bother making this make sense. Then again, what are you doing paying attention to the story? Stripped bare, “Infernoâ€? is a morass of inexplicable escapes, juiceless chases and worlddominating schemes that would perplex a Bond villain. The thrills are confusing and low-energy — a blur of herky-jerky camera work and motivation-free POV shots. A cadre of ďŹ ne international actors (Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, “The Duke of Burgundy’sâ€? Sidse Babett Knudsen) pop up to do little but mirthlessly spout nonsense. Brown’s putrid tomes deserve to be TV movies, not Hollywood A-pictures peopled with great actors and Oscar winners. Thing is, it feels like a TV movie anyway, an IMAX screen ďŹ lled with pure garbage, but not the fun kind. MATT PRIGGE

Jets look to make it two in a row, face lowly Browns in Cleveland New York still in the playoff mix. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

The Jets may think they have quarterback drama each week, but it all pales in comparison to the plight of the Cleveland Browns. New York (2-5) has started 13 different quarterbacks since 1999 — the same year that the reincarnated Browns came back to the NFL. That baker’s dozen is indeed a lot for a franchise, but it’s nothing compared to what Cleveland has endured, as they’ve started 26 different signal-callers in that same span. Cleveland has already had four starting quarterbacks this season, and six in its last 10 games, dating back to 2015. Rookie Cody Kessler (concussion) still hasn’t practiced this week for the Browns (0-7), which means the Jets will likely see veteran Josh McCown under center. McCown hasn’t played since Week 2 when he injured his collarbone. The Jets will need to be on high alert should McCown get the call, though, because despite him being a journeyman and quarterbacking a winless Browns team, he can be a dangerous gunslinger when he gets hot, able to carve up a defense. And while Gang Green is coming off a strong performance, last week, they’ve had issues stopping the pass all season. This game is no gimme, regardless of the standings. The Browns may be a lock for the first pick in the 2017 draft, but the Jets should still treat this game with the utmost importance, because they’re not in a position to take any team lightly. We take a look at some storylines to follow, as the Jets visit the Dawg Pound for first time since 2010.

1

Bangedup Browns’ receivers vs. a

Brandon Marshall will look to get back on track in Cleveland after a rough individual game last Sunday. GETTY IMAGES

struggling Jets’ secondary The Browns have lost a ton of firepower in the passing game this season due to injuries (wideouts Terrelle Pryor and rookie sensation Corey Coleman) and suspensions (receiver Josh Gordon). Gordon is definitely out, but the availability of the other two stars is up in the air. Coleman was listed as limited during Wednesday’s and Thursday’s practices. This is the first week he’s put in work since suffering a broken hand leading up to Week 3. The rookie has been allowed to run routes, but he’s yet to make catches. Pryor is the most likely to play, but he won’t be 100 percent. A pulled hamstring limited him to 31 of 64 snaps in Cincinnati, last week, and the offense suffered for it in a 31-17 defeat. The matchup is a good one for Pryor should he play and be anywhere near healthy, as he’s the only weapon on the receiving corps who is able to put pressure on the Jets’ secondary.

2

Shadowing Brandon Marshall

The Browns have a Pro Bowl cornerback in Joe Haden who has the tools to harass the Jets’ Pro Bowl wideout. But if Haden can’t go, Ryan Fitzpatrick will definitely look early and often for his favorite target. Fitzpatrick will likely try and squeeze some balls in tight coverage even if Haden plays, but if the sleek corner isn’t suited up, the bearded one will definitely seek out his main guy. Haden has missed the last two games after straining a groin muscle in practice, and he’s also missed three of the Browns’ last five games. That’s not a good trend when the Browns will face a guy in Marshall who will be looking to bounce back from last week’s blah performance (three catches for 39 yards).

3 O-Line issues

A major reason the Jets’ offense has slowed since

Gang Green notes: 12 players missed practice on Thursday. Among the notables were Mangold, rookie linebacker Darron Lee (ankle), safety Antonio Allen (Achilles), defensive end Sheldon Richardson (funeral services), and cornerback Buster Skrine (knee).

its Week 2 explosion in Buffalo is because the running game has gone stale — save for last week’s 100-yard performance by running back Matt Forte — and the quarterback play has been erratic. Offensive success will always start with the line, regardless of what type of talent is at the skill positions, so the Jets will need to get guys healthy and shore up their front five. The status of center Nick Mangold (ankle) is still up in the air, and left tackle Ryan Clady (shoulder) and guard/tackle Brent Qvale (neck) are also dealing with issues. Qvale is al-

ready listed as out, while Bowles admitted that the status of his All-Pro center “doesn’t look good.” That’s not good news for the Jets, as the Browns have an underrated pass rush, led by two rookies. Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Nassib have progressed each week. Ogbah, a second-round pick from Oklahoma State University, had two sacks last week and is coming into his own at right defensive end.

Nassib, a third-round pick out of Penn State and the younger brother of Giants’ backup quarterback Ryan, has been dominating opposing right tackles lately. The Bengals made it a point to avoid the 6-foot-7 Nassib, showing a lot of respect for a rookie who is playing with a broken bone in his hand. Nassib finished last week with four tackles and a half-sack, so the Jets should be keen on the burgeoning bookends.

Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (-2.5) Green Bay has been a good team to fade this season (2-3-1 ATS), while Atlanta has been rewarding its backers all year long (5-2 ATS). Expect those trends to continue at the Georgia Dome this week. Matt Ryan should pick apart the Packers’ mediocre pass stoppers (15th in the NFL) while handing the ball off to Devonta Freeman whenever necessary. The Falcons are near the bottom of the league when it comes to pass defense, but Aaron Rodgers has looked lost at QB for Green Bay this season (career lows in multiple categories). Atlanta should also stymie the Packers’ run game, which will be led by desperation-option

just nine sacks through six games. Russell Wilson should have plenty of time to find his targets down the field all game long. As for his opposite number, Drew Brees will have to combat a Seattle defense that allowed only six points in Arizona last week while on the field for over 46 minutes of game time. The pick: Seahawks -2.5

Knile Davis this week after Eddie Lacy and James Starks went down due to injury. The pick: Falcons -2.5

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys (-4) The Eagles dismantled the previously undefeated Vikings last week, but they face a much sterner test in Dallas this Sunday, at least from a defensive standpoint. The Cowboys have been the third-best offense by YPG this year and are expecting wide receiver Dez Bryant to be ready for his first game action since Week 3. Philly got to Sam Bradford six times last week, but the Vikings were missing two starters on the O-Line. Dallas’ elite blockers, who have only allowed nine sacks in six games, should give the Eagles’ blitzers fits while affording Dak Prescott all the time he needs. As for the Eagles’ offense, Carson Wentz hasn’t thrown for over 250 yards in three successive weeks, and likely won’t have his run game to bail him out. Dallas is top-10 in YPG allowed on the ground, and has surrendered just two rushing TDs all season. The pick: Cowboys -4

Aries A change to your appearance or financial situation will be worth your while. Don’t trust anyone but yourself to take care of your responsibilities or affairs.

Libra Keep your life simple, display moderation and don’t fight over petty issues. Getting out with a friend who can offer sound advice will help you bring about positive change.

Taurus A short discussion with someone you trust will help you put your life in perspective. Gain access to information that can help you improve your situation.

Scorpio You will discover information that you can use to outsmart your opposition. Trust only in yourself, and don’t be afraid to do things differently.

Gemini If you expand your interests, you will meet people who have something to offer. Don’t take a risk, but be willing to make decisions and changes based on facts.

Sagittarius Step into a position that will give you greater power to make decisions that will influence your livelihood, community or a cause that concerns you.

Cancer An idea you have has the potential to make you extra cash. If you get together with someone who could contribute to your plan, the collaboration will lead to victory.

Capricorn Use your intelligence and trust in hard work to get you where you want to go. Don’t let someone from your past disrupt your life.

Leo You may be entertaining and charming, but if you spread yourself too thin, you are likely to end up making someone who cares about you angry and upset.

Aquarius Stop overanalyzing things and start moving. It’s your actions that will make a difference, not your words. Love and romance are on the rise and will improve your day.

Virgo A night out with a good friend will give you insight into your past and any baggage you are carrying. Use this knowledge to improve your life.

Pisces Keep your life simple and your overhead down. You are best off cutting costs and having a talk with anyone who’s depleting your funds. EUGENIA LAST
