3 things you need to know UK COURT SAYS BREXIT NEEDS PARLIAMENT’S APPROVAL
1
A British court ruled that the government needs parliamentary approval to start the process of leaving the EU, potentially delaying Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plans. The government said it would appeal against the ruling and Britain’s Supreme Court is expected to consider the case early next month. A spokeswoman for May said the prime minister still planned to launch talks on the terms of Brexit by the end of March and added: “We have no intention of letting this derail our timetable.” Investors took the view that lawmakers would now be able to temper the government’s policies, making it less likely that the government would opt for a “hard Brexit” — a scenario in which it prioritizes tight controls on immigration over remaining in the European single market. GOOGLE FORMALLY REJECTS EU ANTITRUST CHARGES
2
Google formally rejected European Union antitrust charges of unfairly promoting its shopping service and blocking rivals in online search advertising, paving the way for EU regulators to rule next year on these issues and potentially impose hefty fines. The U.S. technology giant’s rebuttal in the shopping case came six years after the European Commission opened an investigation prompted by complaints from rivals such as Microsoft (MSFT.O) and a host of European and U.S. rivals. The EU regulator followed up with an anti-competitive charge against the company in April last year and added more evidence in July this year. It also issued a separate charge sheet against its online search advertising product AdSense for Search at the same time. Google’s general counsel Kent Walker said on a blog that the accusations had no factual, legal or economic basis, and that the company’s actions were driven by its users rather than any plan to squash rivals. JPMORGAN PLANTS DIGITAL PAYMENT FLAG AT WAL-MART

JPMorgan Chase is putting its “Chase Pay” digital wallet on Wal-Mart’s website and in the retailer’s Wal-mart Pay app, hoping to give customers more ways to make purchases without cash, a bank executive said. Kevin Watters, chief executive officer for cards at JPMorgan, said at a conference the bank is trying to make sure its Chase cards are an option for customers who want to make digital payments. Payments with smartphones and digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, probably won’t account for even 1 percent of transactions “for a while,” and will ultimately catch on in unpredictable ways, Watters said. “We want our card to be wherever our consumers want their card to be,” Watters said. As Watters began to speak, the bank said it reached an agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. allowing shoppers to be able to use Chase Pay. REUTERS

Campaigns opt for jazzy election night in NYC One party will be super, another will be a pooper. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
The presidential candidates’ Election Day celebrations might reflect their confidence in the outcome of the contest. Both will be in New York City, but each has rather different festivities planned. Hillary Clinton is gearing up for a humongous party in the biggest venue in New York City — the Jacob Javits Center. It has a glass ceiling, which some suggest is symbolic for Clinton’s breaking the ultimate barrier to become the first woman American President. The Clinton camp’s other election forecast is for bright skies — lit
by fireworks over the Hudson River. Clinton’s guests will include friends, family, invited lawmakers, selected members of the news media and a few lucky members of the public determined ahead of time. There will be no general admission for the public. In contrast, the usually extravagant Republican nominee Donald Trump has reportedly planned a more reserved election night gathering at the Hilton New York ballroom. The space is decidedly less fancy than the Trump Tower atrium. It would have been ill advised to hold it there, because it’s a privately owned space, and the city had already fined Trump $10,000 for holding campaign events there, New York magazine reported. A source told the
magazine that Trump’s party will be “relatively small” because Trump is “superstitious.” “The event is invitation-only for friends and supporters of the Trump-Pence campaign,” according to a news release. As for Trump’s fireworks, he’s fresh out — since on Wednesday he both entered and exited a rally in Florida with the explosives. Barring a voting mishap, the first round of champagne glasses will likely be filled around 7 p.m. ET, when the first states, Indiana, Kentucky as well as a very big swing state — Florida, with 29 electoral votes — close their polling stations. Just a half an hour later the country will hear from North Carolina, also a battleground state. And then at 8 p.m. Ohio, with a significant 18 Electoral College votes.
After 8 p.m., results will start flooding in from Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland. By 10 p.m. New York and the rest of the country should be done counting. The difference in the tone of each candidate’s election night shindigs might have something to do with how the Electoral College vote numbers are stacking up — and not the popular vote. The candidates need 270 Electoral College votes to clinch the election. At the moment, Clinton’s count with the historically Democratic states, and a few of the left leaning states, puts her very close to the goal at 253. By the same counts, Trump has 179 without the biggest battlegrounds — which means he will have to take nearly every swing state to win.

Harlem church provides luxury shopping experience for homeless and threadbare Personal shoppers and high-end styles are offered for free. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

Finding that perfect top hanging on a clothing rack is easier than hoping it might be inside a garbage bag filled with crumpled clothing. For that very reason a Harlem church is providing a luxury shopping experience for the less financially fortunate. The 10th annual Clothing Mall at the First Corinthian Baptist Church is set for Saturday and promises to be bigger and fancier than it’s ever been. Two floors of the church are lined with clothing racks, divided into departments and organized by sizes. Shoppers will enjoy music as they shop, and popcorn as they wait to be admitted into the mall. They go in 10 at a time, and everyone is greeted by a personal shopper who can help them find what they

from the other donations, only the very best things are picked — like a fur coat and a Stella McCarthy gown. “We have a very aggressive sorting process. We wouldn’t give anything we wouldn’t put on ourselves,” Johnson said. Each shopper is given 12 tickets to use on the bags, shoes, ac-
cessories, kids, juniors, men’s women’s and senior items at the mall. At checkout the items are wrapped in tissue paper and put in a boutique shopping bag to add to the high-end experience. “Last year we had a wedding dress, there were several people who wanted the dress, but it went to whoever was
Bronx man dies of cardiac arrest after NYPD sergeant uses Taser on him A Bronx man died Wednesday night after police used a Taser on him as he threatened them with a glass bottle, investigators said. Three officers and a sergeant responded to a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed man threatening a neighbor with a knife at a 1840 Mayflower Ave. apartment in Pelham Bay. When the officers confronted the man, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed by investigators, he threatened them with an intact bottle. The sergeant discharged a Taser twice

on the 49-year-old man, and he was then taken into custody. He went into cardiac arrest, and CPR was administered by police personnel, the NYPD said. The man
was taken to Einstein Hospital, where he died around 7:22 p.m. The department’s Force Investigation Division is looking into the incident, which
comes just two weeks after police fatally shot 66-year-old Bronx resident Deborah Danner. A neighbor made an emergency call that Danner, who suffered from schizophrenia, was acting irrationally, reports said. After Sgt. Hugh Barry discovered Danner holding scissors, he persuaded her to put them down. She then reportedly charged at him with a baseball bat, and Barry shot Danner twice. But it didn’t fit and so she brought it back and the woman who really wanted it got to take it,” Johnson said. “It was really remarkable.” Volunteers have been organizing and publicizing the event for months in shelters, soup kitchens and pantries. They’re expecting more
than 1,000 people this year. “Most of the people who come together for this are volunteers, doing from the love of their heart, and doing it for families,” Johnson said. “It’s good stuff, people are not just giving their trash, people are stocking it months ahead of time and that makes it such a success.”

Imagine the challenge of running the New York Marathon this Sunday. Now imagine doing it without feet, or without eyesight, or without being able to stand up at all. Pierry Ramirez was 18 when as a soldier in Colombia his vehicle hit an IED. The car exploded, and he was paralyzed from the waist down. “My first thought was my family, was my parents,” Ramirez told Metro. “When I saw them crying I thought to myself, you have to do something, because they have to smile again and they have to be proud of you. “One year after my accident I decided to continue with my life, but I always, always did it through sports,” he said. So he participated in sports in his wheelchair — basketball, tennis, powerlifting. But he also exercised

BRIEFS Dog walker sues SoHo hotelier for allegedly trying to torch two Jack Russells A city dog walker is suing the founder of the Dream Hotel Group for unspecified damages for trauma she suffered after he tried to set two dogs on fire last month, according to media reports. Isabell Suquilanda, 29, of Queens, was walking two Jack Russells along Wooster Street on Oct. 7 when hotelier Vikram Chatwal came out of his home and reportedly used a lighter and aerosol can to shoot flames toward the dogs. The dogs, which belong to gallery owner Sean Kelly, suffered minor burns. Kelly lives across the street from Chatwal, 44. Witnesses said that Chatwal yelled, “They must die!” during the attack, which was “like a fire-breathing dragon,”
one told Page Six on Oct. 9. Following the attack, Chatwal was arrested and charged with torturing and injuring animals, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Chatwal’s lawyer, Mark Jay Heller, told the New York Daily News that Suquilanda’s suit is “unmeritorious, frivolous and unsupported by the law.” NIKKI M. MASCALI

organization that provides money, motivation and the means of getting disabled athletes into serious competitions. Achilles also provides guides that accompany the blind runners — 60 of them in this year’s marathon — such as for Anthony But-
ler, who lost his sight in 2008 when he was caught in gunfire in the Bronx. Ramirez wanted to use his strength to not just power his own competition, but that of others. “They said to me, please set up a chapter, please do activities, please
train, please be a leader.” He is a mentor to 50 Colombians on the Achilles International Team, many of whom are also landmine victims, and range in age from 17 to 60. Ramirez, now 40, is back in the city to run his fifth New York City Mara-
thon, with three others from his Colombian team. Last year he did it with his everyday wheelchair and finished the marathon in 5 hours and 30 minutes, a remarkably good time considering the average marathon time for men is 4 hours and 13 minutes. This time, he will use a handcycle, a threewheeled vehicle powered by hand in which the rider he is almost fully reclined. “I am still a young man,” Ramirez said. “I think that my life has been successful. My wish is to be that my parents be proud of me.
Report: Manhattan investment banker tries to unadopt son A New York man has filed court documents to unadopt the biological son of his estranged wife, the New York Post reported. Banker Robert Roever filed papers in May to undo the adoption of his 10-year-old son. Roever’s ex, Alisa Cawley, told the Post Wednesday that he has raised the boy since he was 4 months old and legally adopted him in 2011, soon after the two married. “Now he doesn’t want to see him,” Cawley said, adding that the child texts Roever “saying, ‘I miss you, dad.’”

“I feel bad,” Roever told the Post. He said he believes that the boy’s adoption was fraudulent because Cawley led him to believe that she didn’t know who the boy’s
biological father was. The Post reported that Cawley’s lawyer, Michael Stutman, requested that Manhattan Judge Lori Sattler jail Roever for paying just
$1,200 of court-ordered child support for the past 17 months. The judge told Roever he has until Nov. 22 to pay the nearly $20,000 balance. NIKKI M. MASCALI

Sources: FBI fear of leaks drove decision on emails linked to Clinton The examination of the email traffic is now being carried out under the tightest secrecy by a team at FBI headquarters in Washington, the sources said, requesting anonymity because of the inquiry’s sensitivity. FBI Director James Comey was driven in part by a fear of leaks from within his agency when he decided to tell Congress the FBI was investigating newly discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton, law enforcement sources said on Thursday. Several sources said it was unclear whether the FBI would make any further public disclosures about its latest review before Tuesday’s presidential

and congressional elections. Two sources said such disclosures were unlikely. Another source, recently in contact with top investigators, said: “It depends on how it goes and what they find.” The source said that, as of Thursday, “nobody really knows” whether the FBI will have anything further to say before the election. The latest emails examination was moving forward “expeditiously,” said one source close to the review.
The new emails turned up as FBI investigators were examining electronic devices used by former Democratic Representative Anthony Weiner in connection with an alleged “sexting” scandal. Weiner’s estranged wife, Huma Abedin, is a Clinton confidante. Two law enforcement sources familiar with the FBI’s New York Field Office, which initially discovered the emails, said a faction of investigators based in the office is known to be hostile to Hillary Clinton. A spokeswoman for the FBI’s New York office said she had no knowledge about this. Democratic Party sources said such a faction was likely responsible for a recent surge in media leaks on alleged details of an ongoing FBI investigation of the Clinton Foundation. REUTERS
THE CHOICE After all the bitterness, cheap shots, real contempt and false empathy let me just say I’ll understand. When you step up to that ballot next week, stare at your choices and finally pick a president, I’ll understand if you feel a little sick. Or you need a drink. Or you want to buy a canoe and start paddling for a distant shore. I’ll even understand if you don’t vote. Because as much as we may consider voting not merely a right but a duty, that presupposes a choice about which a conscientious voter can feel at least vaguely good — or ethical — or not nauseous. And for months now the polls have said that is not this race. The majority of voters have never trusted either of the main contenders, nor have they shown any depth of confidence in them. Of course hardcore partisans, frothing for victory, hate talk like this. They suggest anyone who doesn’t vote or (gasp!)

his decisiveness and business skills could bust up D.C.’s status quo. But again, the numbers show most voters have little faith these talents outweigh the contenders’ weaknesses. For most Americans this is a Hobson’s choice: Do you pull the lever for one bad candidate or another? And can you walk away with a clean conscience either way? I know, I know — if you’ve already decided which choice is better, it will be tempting to attack these struggling voters should your side lose. But don’t. Both Clinton and Trump have had many months and endless hours in the media to convince a clear majority of their merits. So if your candidate has failed and loses the race, blame him or her. No one else. Then shake hands with your neighbor, no matter how that neighbor voted, and say “I understand.” This has been an ugly race for all of us.

BRIEF Clinton supporters worry about close White House race Hillary Clinton’s supporters nervously eyed opinion polls showing the Democrat with a tenuous lead over Republican rival Donald Trump on Thursday as the White House candidates raced through vital battleground states in a late search for votes. Clinton was leading Trump by six percentage points, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found Wednesday. That was the same
advantage she held before FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to Congress last week saying the agency had found a new cache of emails potentially related to its probe of Clinton emails. Other polls have shown a far closer race, fueling Democratic worries about the state of the race just five days before Tuesday’s election. Clinton’s national lead over Trump eroded to three percentage points among likely
voters in a New York Times/ CBS News poll on Thursday, down from nine points just two weeks ago. An average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics website also showed her lead at 1.7 percentage points on Thursday, well down from the solid advantage she had until late last month. “I’m worried that Trump may win,” said Nancy Dubs, 83, a retiree in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, who said she was voting for Clinton. “I think it’s maybe time to have a female president.” For Clinton supporters, it has been a quick shift from confidence to anxiety. “I think all of us are a little bit nervous,” said Rajnandini Pillai, a professor at California State University at San Marcos who plans to back Clinton. “It seemed pretty much in the bag a couple weeks ago.” REUTERS

The candidate has repeatedly said the Nov. 8 presidential election may be rigged, and has urged supporters to keep an eye out for signs of voting fraud in Philadelphia and other heavily Democratic areas. In a blow to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a U.S. judge Thursday upheld a Pennsylvania state law that could make it difficult for his supporters to monitor Election Day activity in Democraticleaning areas. Democrats worry that could encourage Trump supporters to harass Hispanics, AfricanAmericans and other minority voters in a state that could determine whether Trump or his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, wins the presidency. Trump faces a significant hurdle in Pennsylvania because state law requires partisan poll watchers to perform their duties in the county in which they are registered to vote. That could make
it difficult to recruit monitors in places like Philadelphia, where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a ratio of eight to one. The city has 120,000 registered Republicans and 1,685 voting locations. The Pennsylvania Republican Party sought to suspend that requirement so poll monitors could come from anywhere in the state, which would enable them to bring in supporters from suburban and rural areas where Trump has stronger support. But U.S. District Judge Gerald Pappert denied the request, writing that it would be too disruptive to change the law less than a week before Tuesday’s vote. “Were the court to enter the requested injunction, poll watchers would be allowed to roam the Commonwealth on election day for the first time in the Election Code’s seventynine year history — giving the Commonwealth and county election officials all of five days’ notice to prepare for the change,” he wrote. The Republican Party of Pennsylvania did not immediately respond to a request for comment. REUTERS

Suspect in killing of Iowa police officers charged with murder Authorities in Iowa charged a man suspected of killing two police officers with two counts of first-degree murder on Thursday, and said they found the rifle they believe he used to carry out the ambush-style attacks. Scott Michael Greene, 46, was arrested after turning himself in to authorities hours after the separate shootings early on Wednesday in Des Moines and the city’s suburb of Urbandale. Police have not commented on a motive for the ambush-style assaults. Police were planning to hold a news conference later on Thursday, said Sergeant Chad Underwood, a spokesman for the Urbandale Police Department. Authorities had earlier said a police dog helped officers find a rifle believed to be the firearm used in the killings.

BRIEF Prosecutor: South Carolina cop staged scene after shooting black man A South Carolina prosecutor accused a white former police officer on Thursday of staging a crime scene where he had just shot dead an unarmed black motorist, by moving a Taser closer to the handcuffed dead body so he could claim the victim had taken the stun gun. Former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager, 34, is on trial for murder over the shooting death of Walter Scott, 50. Slager shot Scott five times in the back as Scott fled from the 2015 traffic stop for a broken tail light. The shooting, captured on a bystander’s cellphone video, intensified a national debate over police use of deadly force against black men. Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson told the jury in opening statements that Scott may have grabbed Slager’s Taser as it was pressed against his body during a struggle, but Slager had attempted to make the scene look as if Scott had possession of the weapon as he fled. “He said Walter Scott came af-
ter him with the Taser and he shot him when he turned. He said, ‘He ran away with my Taser,’” Wilson said, jabbing her finger at Slager. In reality, the Taser had fallen to the ground further away, she said. Slager’s “first instinct after he cuffed the dead Walter Scott was to stage the scene,” Wilson said. “He runs back and gets that Taser ... He walked over to a dead Walter Scott and threw it down right beside him.” Prosecutors contend Scott fled because he was behind on child support payments and feared a routine check would result in his arrest. Slager’s lead defense attorney, Andrew Savage, countered by shifting blame to Scott for failing to follow the officer’s instructions. He did not address the claim about moving the Taser. “Why did he choose not to respect the request to stay where he was?” Savage said. “That’s something I hope you consider when you evaluate the evidence in this case. He didn’t just run. He physically and forcefully resisted to the extent that they were both fighting on the ground. REUTERS

Penn State fined $2.4M for failures related to Sandusky child abuse The fine is the largest the Department of Education has ever levied under the Clery Act. Penn State University was hit with a $2.4 million fine on Thursday by the U.S. Department of Education for its mishandling of child molestation complaints against convicted former football coach Jerry Sandusky. The department issued the penalty alongside a scathing 239-page report that capped a five-year investigation into how the school complied with a federal law, the Clery Act, requiring schools to report campus crimes and warn students of any danger. The school violated the law when it failed to alert its students and employees that Sandusky was going to be criminally charged in 2011, according to the department. Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child abuse, and several Penn State officials face separate charges for not reporting Sandusky earlier to authorities. The probe examined Penn State’s compliance from 1998 to 2011, during which prosecutors said Sandusky engaged in multiple acts of child abuse, including some on campus. The report faulted officials for al-

Islamic State leader says ‘no retreat’ from Mosul assault Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi told his followers on Thursday there could be no retreat in a “total war” against the forces arrayed against them, as advancing soldiers battled into their northern Iraqi stronghold of Mosul. Expressing confidence that his Islamic State fighters would prevail against Shi’ite Muslims, Western “crusaders” and Sunni “apostate” countries Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Baghdadi called on the jihadists fighting in Mosul to “wreak havoc.” “This raging battle and total war, and the great jihad that the state of Islam is fighting today only increases our firm belief, God willing, and our conviction that all this is a prelude to victory,” Baghdadi said in an audio recording released online by supporters. Iraqi regular troops and special forces,

Shi’ite militias, Kurdish peshmerga fighters and other groups backed by U.S.-led air strikes launched a campaign two weeks ago to retake Mosul. Winning back the city would signal the defeat of the Iraqi half of a cross-border caliphate which Baghdadi declared from the pulpit of a Mosul mosque two years ago. Islamic State also holds large parts of neighboring Syria.
Migrants rescued
In his first audio message released in nearly a year, Baghdadi called on the population of Mosul’s Nineveh province “not to weaken in the jihad” against the “enemies of God.” He also called on the group’s suicide fighters to “turn the nights of the unbelievers into days, to wreak havoc in their land and make their blood flow as rivers.” Those tempted to flee should “know that the value of staying on your land with honor is a thousand times better than the price of retreating with shame.” Shortly after Baghdadi’s speech was released at around 2 a.m., residents said heavy explosions shook eastern Mosul. One said the militants fired dozens of rockets towards the Intisar, Quds and Samah districts where soldiers have been closing in.

US, 35 states to boost electric vehicle charging network The White House has repeatedly tried to boost EV sales, including hiking the EV tax credit and converting it to a point-ofsale rebate, but the proposals have yet to pass Congress. The White House said on Thursday it will establish 48 national electric-vehicle (EV) charging networks on nearly 25,000 miles of highways in 35 states. The Obama administration said 28 states, utilities and vehicle manufactures, including General Motors Co., BMW AG. and Nissan Motor Co. and EV charging firms have also agreed to work together to jump-start additional charging stations
on the corridors. The corridors were required to be established by December under a 2015 highway law. The Federal Highway Administration on Thursday unveiled new roadside signs to help motorists find charging stations. The White House said drivers can expect either existing or planned charging stations within every 50 miles. It also said 24 state and local governments have agreed to buy hundreds of additional electric vehicles for government fleets and add new EV charging stations. Overall, the number of U.S. charging stations has grown from 500 in 2008 to more than 16,000, the White House said. California will buy at least 150 zero-emission vehicles and provide EV charging at a minimum of

5 percent of state-owned parking spaces by 2020. The city of Atlanta will add 300 charging stations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport by the end of 2017. Los Angeles agreed to nearly triple the city’s current plug-in electric fleet to 555 vehicles from about 200 by the end of 2017. Of those, 200 will be for the police department. The city is also adding another 500 charging stations by 2017.
One hurdle to the mass adoption of EVs has been the difficulty in finding places to recharge vehicles. In July, the White House said it was expanding a federal loan guarantee program to include companies building EV charging stations. The Energy Department issued a notice clarifying that charging facilities, including hardware and software, are an eligible technology for the $4.5 billion loan program.
But no loans have been made for EV charging projects yet, officials said on Thursday. Administration efforts come as domestic EV sales have not met early expectations. Sales have fallen well below President Barack Obama’s goal of 1 million by 2015. U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz told Reuters in January that the country may hit the figure in three to four years with continuing improvements in battery technology, but he acknowledged low gasoline prices have hurt EV sales. In August 2008, Obama set a goal of getting 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on the roads by 2015. Only about 520,000 electric cars have been sold in the United States since 2008, out of about 250 million cars and trucks on U.S. roads. REUTERS

BRIEF Fitbit sell-off spreads to GoPro ahead of quarterly report Investors on edge about GoPro’s slumping sales ahead of its quarterly report on Thursday appeared even more anxious following fellow consumer gadget maker Fitbit’s dismal revenue forecast late the day before. GoPro’s stock fell 5.02 percent ahead of its third-quarter report after the bell, while Fitbit tumbled 30.6 percent after Wall Street analysts cut their ratings and pointed to uncertainty about future demand for its fitness bands. The shares of both companies soared following their IPOs in 2014 and 2015 on a wave of optimism about personal electronic gadgets and “wearable” technology, only to tumble in the past year with signs that demand for their products might be peaking and facing tougher competition. While Fitbit’s colorful fitnesstracking wristbands have little to do with GoPro’s action cameras favored by surfers and skiers, both Silicon Valley companies attracted investors betting their electronics products would become major hits with consumers. They also attracted legions of skeptical short sellers. REUTERS

Mads Mikkelsen plays “Doctor Strange’s” resident villain: a sorcerer who wants to destroy the world so that he and his gang can live forever. MARVEL

A light chat about death with
MADS MIKKELSEN THE FUN STARTS HERE
In “Doctor Strange,” the former “Hannibal” star plays a villain with, he feels, a method to his madness. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Mads Mikkelsen can play nice, but he’s also played both a Bond villain (in “Casino Royale”) and Hannibal Lecter. In “Doctor Strange,” the Danish performer predictably winds up on the evil side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s Kaecilius, a devious sorcerer who winds up facing down Benedict Cumberbatch’s neurosurgeon-turnedheroic-magician. But his plan almost sounds tantalizing: He wants to defy the ageless leader known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and create a new society where humans live forever. The only problem: that involves killing most of the world. Mikkelsen, 50, talks to us about death, mortality and how we
don’t know if there’s an afterlife. Ignoring, of course, that it involves global genocide, Kaecilius’ plan is attractive: He wants to find a way to cheat death. [Laughs] It’s very attractive. It makes sense. He has a point. Who would say no to what he’s offering? Even though living forever is attractive, I’m not sure I wouldn’t waste immortality, just as I’m sure we all waste our own lives. That’s always the thing: We define life within a certain time frame. For that reason, it gives it certain qualities. If we don’t have that time frame anymore, we have to give it a different quality. Is that worth it? We won’t know until we get there. What do you think you’d do if you lived forever? I would do more of the same, because it’s incredibly fun to do what I’m doing. [Laughs] To life your life and then have
another ride on the carousel, then having another ride on the carousel — it doesn’t sound crazy to me. You kind of get to do that: As an actor, you get to repeatedly inhabit other people’s lives. That’s true. We get the chance to step in other people’s shoes. We play a little piano, we speak a little French, we ride some horses. But we never get to fully master any of it. We get to visit other worlds. That’s another fantastic part of this job. In the film, your character takes one extreme on mortality, which is that we get to live forever, while Swinton’s Ancient One talks about embracing death and about the finality of life. But that’s easy for her to say: She’s lived forever. [Laughs] It’s a little like an incredibly beautiful person who says, “You look so beautiful” to someone else. Easy for her to say, because she’s beautiful. [The Ancient One] has a valid point,
that she might be full up now [with life]. But at least she had the chance to get a couple extra rides on the carousel compared to the rest of the human race. It’s true. We do all die. Unless you believe in certain things. If you bring religion into the picture, that’s also a way to become immortal, if you believe something else happens [after we die]. The human race has been circling that question forever. That must be one of the reasons we invented religion. It all seems to stem from the fear that our bodies will one day collapse in on us. Even stronger than that, though, is asking why on earth are we here? It simply doesn’t make sense. It’s not been done well. What was he thinking up there? We have no clear explanation for why we’re here. No one told us what our function is. Exactly. Some people embrace that and say,
“There is no point, we can do whatever the f— we want.” That’s another way to approach it. It’s also a terrible way to approach it. Some of them have a great deal of fun, though. [Laughs] It must be nice to not be burdened by morality. Exactly. But we are. But I guess that comes from religion as well. We’ll never know until we’re standing in front of that gate. Unless nothing happens after we die. Exactly. Then we can’t turn around and tell people that. [Laughs]

Scott Derrickson’s “Doctor Strange,” with its twisting, kaleidoscopic cityscapes, is the best looking Marvel movie — which isn’t saying much, but it really is stunning. MARVEL
“Doctor Strange” Director: Scott Derrickson Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton Rating: PG-13 At this point, watching the Marvel movies that continue a single, increasingly jam-packed and convoluted story is as fun as untangling a gnarly ball of Christmas lights. But the introductory installments can still be charming. “Ant-Man,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and especially the new “Doctor Strange” get to thrive in their one-offness. They let their freak flags fly, show off some new toys, even make their own weird kinds of jokes. Then
they get tragically sucked into the bigger, lumpier whole. As far as brand recognizability goes, this latest entry finds Marvel scraping somewhere near the bottom of the barrel. Embodied by Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange is in fact a guy whose last name is “Strange” and who is actually a doctor. Having lost his rock star hands in a car accident, our brilliant, arrogant, Beyonce joke-making hero journeys to the East for a mystery cure. There, he finds a secret cabal of sorcerers led by an ageless, hairless head magician known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton, reliably Tilda-y). She shows Strange a world beyond our own — one

where rooms and corridors and whole cityscapes can be rearranged by a trained mind, where the entire universe can be visited in one trippy rush, where one’s astral form can leave the body and engage another loose spirit in a pretty nifty smackdown. The Ancient One introduces the Marvel Cinematic Universe to something new, too: killer visuals. “Captain America: Civil War” took place in such thrilling locales as municipal carparks, Queens apartment buildings and an airport tarmac. “Doctor Strange” whisks us from New York City to Kathmandu to Hong Kong, then turns the buildings into kaleidoscopic Rubik’s Cubes. It’s like “Inception,” only fun, and it comes at us in 3-D that actually uses the third dimension — a phantasmagoria for the eyes. “Doctor Strange” almost gets away with it, too, which is to say it almost stands on its own hind legs — a self-contained adventure, not just another cog about to be installed in a wheel. But it is still a Marvel film, which is to say it’s yet another drawn-out origin story that turns into yet another plot for world domination by yet another interchangeable villain. But when it’s cooking, it’s not just a good Marvel film but simply a good film. MATT PRIGGE
“Hacksaw Ridge” Director: Mel Gibson Stars: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington Rating: R Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” opens on a shot of bloody corpses. Over top this heinous image we can hear eight, whispered, earnest words: “Have you not heard? The lord is God.” That’s “Hacksaw Ridge” in a nutshell, and that’s Mel Gibson in a nutshell, too. The first movie he’s directed in 10 years, released into a world that has far from forgiven him, is nothing if not direct with us. Its opening all but says, “This is what I am: a movie both religiously pious and so violent you might vomit in your mouth 20 times. Accept me.” Accepting “Hacksaw Ridge,” much less Gibson, isn’t easy. But you have to respect it. After all, it’s just being honest. “Hacksaw Ridge,” though, is not the story of Mel Gibson. It’s the true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a man Gibson wishes he could be. A good ol’ boy Seventh-Day Adventist, he made military history by serving in World War II without taking up a single arm. He was a pacifist, but also someone who wanted
to help his country. When his unit was deployed to the bloody Battle of Okinawa, Doss made good by saving over 70 wounded men. Fitting for a film made by someone long out of the game, “Hacksaw Ridge” is a throwback, which in this case means a type of film that was still popular only seven or eight years ago. Gibson has made a straight-up, simplistic husk of “old-fashioned” inspirational corn — a true story in which we root for a beleaguered hero against hissable monsters, then cheer as he prevails. Once Doss and company wind up overseas, Gibson segues into another kind of bygone movie: the World War II sagas of the late ’90s. Specifically, he wants to oneup “Saving Private Ryan,” taking that one’s gruesome Normandy
19
opener and stretching it into a full hour-plus of blown-off limbs, caved-in heads, screaming soldiers on fire, loving close-ups of rats gnawing on flesh. This is every bit the pacifist story one would expect from someone whose Jesus movie would have gotten an NC-17 if it wasn’t about Jesus. It’s also a film only Mel Gibson, and no one else, could have made. A tale of persecution told by a deeply troubled but talented man, it bears all his obsessions and contradictions. It’s alternately rousing and frustrating, moving and sickening. It can be all these things, because Gibson is all these things. “Hacksaw Ridge” is what it is, and if you don’t leave liking its maker as a human being, at least you understand him. MP
In Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” Andrew Garfield, center, plays Desmond Doss, a pacifist who served during one of World War II’s bloodiest battles while never picking up a rifle. MARK ROGERS

Claire Foy and Matt Netflix’s new series shows Elizabeth II’s ascent to the throne. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
Today, Netflix’s hotly anticipated new series “The Crown” (from creator Peter Morgan, “The Queen”) pulls back the curtain on the British royal family. Season 1 opens in the year 1947, as a young Elizabeth II, (Claire Foy, who also played British royalty in the role of Anne Boleyn in BBC 2’s “Wolf Hall”) weds Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor on “Dr. Who”). But their honeymoon phase is cut short by the subsequent death of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI (Jared Harris, “Mad Men”) after which Elizabeth, at only 25 years old, ascends to the throne. Foy’s and Smith’s performances as young newlyweds whose world is turned upside down serve to humanize the monarchs, who in real life are notoriously reserved. We spoke with the two stars about the challenges of playing royalty and how there won’t be much “rumpy pumpy” between the on-screen couple.
It must be nerve wracking playing these two iconic monarchs. Did you grow up watching Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip? Claire Foy: When you live in England, they’re very much in your lives. There are different points of the year — the Christmas speech, the jubilee — you get used to the cel-
ebrations. Harry and William, especially, is our generation. My mom really identified with Diana. So, you do grow up with an awareness of them, but not an awareness of them when they’re younger, or knowing what their early married life was like, as she [Princess Elizabeth]

came to the throne, or all the struggles that we fictionally believe they had. You do sort of have to forget everything you know, and not put that on it in a negative way. It gives you the distance to not judge them, to see them as just human beings and try to put them in the context of your life. Do you think that they’ll watch it? Foy: They’ll definitely be aware of it. But, we’ll

Smith dazzle in ‘The Crown’ after the death of King George — because from that point on, he had to walk two steps behind her the whole time. I think that was a very difficult concept for him to negotiate — you know, being asked to kneel to his wife. These are things that in the context of the 1950s were unheard of with men. We read that it’s going to be very PG-13 between your characters. Foy: Oh, there’s no rumpy pumpy. No one wants to see that. [Cracks up] Smith: No hanky panky. [Laughs] Foy: It’s not that it’s meant to be massively respectful, or anything … Smith: It’s just not a part

never know [if they watch it], is the answer, because they’ll never say. Matt Smith: Too inscrutable. You really humanized the characters — the struggle of Elizabeth being only 25 years old and having her world turned upside down. Foy: It’s the script and the reality of their situation.
You can’t help but be moved by it and feel sympathy for the situation and the struggles they’re going through. Smith: You can’t help but empathize. It sort of makes it almost, much less glamorous, even though it’s a very glamorous world. You understand what they’re going through, that they’re just very human, and they’re
trying to deal with this very, oddly, inhumane situation. Prince Philip’s role is very complex — in that era, for a man to be subservient to his wife. Smith: Yes, absolutely, I think that was very difficult for him, with his great love and affection that he has towards Elizabeth, being emasculated
of the story that you really need to see the Queen and Philip, you know. But, hopefully one gets the impression that that’s part of their relationship, because you see enough intimacy. Foy: It’s sort of a thing now, when you watch TV drama, you think that’s what you’re going to see. It’s just not that sort of show. But it’s definitely implied. This is the second time you’ve played Queen of England, essentially. Foy: Well, yes. Anne [Boleyn] wasn’t technically queen, she was queen consort, while Elizabeth is very much on her own. I don’t know how that’s hap-
pened. I don’t think they’re particularly similar. I don’t know what on earth I’m doing playing royalty. It’s a bit peculiar. And you’ve put to bed the rumors of ever returning to “Dr. Who”? Smith: [The show is called] “Peter Tardis” now. [Smirks] It will always hold an affectionate place in my heart. Foy: You’re very busy. Smith: Yes, I’m trying to be Prince Philip again. Can’t be masquerading as a time traveler! One of the attractive things about this show, really, was that it was so different from that sort of character [on “Dr. Who”]. Not to say that I don’t miss it.

It all began in a dream. This particular dream sparked Damien Jurado’s 2012 record “Maraqopa, which tells the surreal adventures of a nameless protagonist. The Seattle-
based singer/songwriter has now completed the third record in this trilogy with 2016’s “Visions of Us on the Land, an introspective, psychedeliatinged album that follows the character’s journey across the U.S. with a partner called Silver Katherine. It’s an epic tale of travel, love and reflection, but its origin story is simpler than you might expect. “It didn’t really take a lot
of thought, explains Jurado. “It just sort of comes natural for me. I just followed the muse, I guess, and see what happens. What ended up happening was one of Jurado’s most diverse, expansive records yet. From electrified folk benders like “Exit 353 and spooky, rollicking cuts like “Mellow Blue Polka Dot to the swirling, synth-laden “A.M. A.M., it’s a far cry from some of the now 43-year-old

singer’s earlier, minimally produced works. Richard Swift (The Shins, Dan Auerbach’s side project The Arcs) is responsible for some of his shifting tone. “This is my fourth record with Richard. I obviously like working with him,â€? says Jurado. “I’ve been looking for someone most of my career to work with. Now that I found the dude ‌ it’d be weird to think about doing a record without him.â€? While Jurado’s poetic songwriting often begs for more explanation, he doesn’t have the answers. “I’m not one that really writes a lot of stuff and analyzes it all,â€? he notes.

“I think a lot of people have different interpretations of what certain lines mean. I honestly don’t know. I just sort of write it out. I don’t think about it that often, you know? Further, he doesn’t favor particular parts of the record. “For me, [my favorite part’s] just making the record, says Jurado. “I really like making re-
cords. That, to me, is what I remember the most. He prefers thinking about “Visions, and other albums, as a whole. “I could pick out my favorite songs and make a playlist, which is fine, but it kind of goes against the whole idea of the complete work. That’s the problem, I think, with singles. I think singles shouldn’t be taken off the record. I think singles, personally, should be made just for singles and nothing else. For his upcoming live dates, Jurado is stripping down and just touring with his acoustic guitar. “It feels just how I wrote them.

Wright-Phillips leads Red Bulls into second leg against Impact Major League Soccer playoff preview. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us
The leading goal scorer in MLS this past season, Bradley Wright-Phillips, might be the most anonymous star not just in the league but perhaps in all of American sports. And it will be this quiet, low-key personality who will be called on this Sunday when the Red Bulls host the Montreal Impact at Red Bull Arena in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals (4 p.m., ESPN). The Red Bulls’ star striker, whose 24 goals this season sees him pace the league for the second time in three years, is not a typical star in American sports leagues. He hates, actually despises, talking about himself in public and even a mention of being an MVP candidate is quickly talked down. Wright-Phillips would much rather win MLS Cup, he says, then be named league MVP. Two years ago, he

scored 27 goals — tying the most in MLS history and this year he became the first player in MLS history to score at least 20 goals twice in his career. Yet he wasn’t even an MLS All-Star this season and his own MVP candidacy — he is a finalist alongside teammate Sacha Kljestan and New York City FC’s David Villa — is somewhat over-
looked. “More than just the goals, he’s not your typical diva forward who is a crybaby when he doesn’t get the ball. He works his butt off and when he gets his chances, he typically buries them,” Kljestan said on Thursday. “For us, not just the goals but the way he works on and off the ball. And in the way he is in the locker
room, being a pretty good leader for some of the young guys and being a great guy to have on your team.” Ironically in the 2014 preseason, Wright-Phillips was almost cut by the team’s management at the time. Now he might be the best player on a team that has won the Supporters’ Shield twice in the last three
3
seasons. Part of Wright-Phillips’ under-the-radar status is because he came into MLS four seasons ago a bit of an unknown and grew into his role as a star on the Red Bulls. Unlike the current crop of superstars in the league, such as the aforementioned Villa and players like Giovinco and Giovani dos Santos,
Wright-Phillips didn’t already achieve international stardom before coming to MLS. He was a journeyman of sorts in his native England, but wound up finding a perfect fit with New York. This season’s output, plus his relentless work rate in the Red Bull highpress speak volumes about the lack of ego to his game. For Kljestan, a member of the United States national team who played in the Champions League with Anderlecht, it is rare to find a prolific goal scorer who is as humble and team-oriented as No. 99. “Never been around anybody like that, and if I have they’d probably only get five goals a season,” Kljestan said. Kind of those things that go hand-in-hand that sometimes those selfish, egotistical forwards are often the best ones because they take everything personally. They want to be the best, they want to score the most goals and like I said they are selfish sometimes. Brad is so unselfish it’s almost wild to think that he still got 24 goals and the nature of the person that he is.”
Things to watch for as Giants face Eagles
The New York Giants are now fresh off a bye, perhaps an ill-timed break in the NFL schedule for a team that is coming off consecutive wins. But Sunday (1 p.m., Fox) the Giants do face a divisional opponent in the Philadelphia Eagles who, after a strong start, have lost three of their last four games. It is a battle of 4-3 teams in a game that, in a month’s time, might just go a long way toward helping to sort out the NFC playoff picture.
1.The bye busters Teams coming off a bye are often susceptible to sluggish play and slow starts, a trend in the

NFL in recent years. The Giants know this all too well, losing two straight last year after their Week 11 bye and losing immediately after their bye week in 2014.
They are helped by the fact that this is against arguably their biggest rival, meaning that they should be up and focused for this one.
“It’s a big game. It’s a division game. Right now, we’re thinking about the next game, which is our most important game,” center Weston Richburg said.
A couple weeks ago, CBS Sports analyst Bart Scott made waves calling Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz’s strong start to his rookie season “fool’s gold.” The Eagles are definitely in a slump, losers of three of their last four games, and Wentz is shouldering some (but not all) of the criticism for their recent drop in form. His touchdown numbers are down in the Eagles’ losses (six touchdowns in their four wins, three touchdowns in their three losses) but his completion percentage is actually up in those three losses.
3. Cruz’n along Two years ago, Victor Cruz’s 2014 season (and subsequently his 2015 season) came crashing to a halt on Oct. 12 in Philadelphia. That patella tendon tear in his right knee even threw this season into doubt as it appeared throughout much of the offseason that the Giants’ wide receiver’s career might be over. Instead he has rebounded for a solid 2016. In six of seven games this season, Cruz has registered multiple catches and he had five receptions for 50 yards two weeks ago in the win over the Los Angeles Rams in London. KRISTIAN DYER

Things to watch for as Jets take on Dolphins
NFL game preview for Week 9. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Jets’ recent two-game winning streak hasn’t been pretty, but the NFL playoffs aren’t awarded on beauty. As long as Gang Green continues to get timely plays from their perimeter players on offense, and make the necessary stops with their bend-but-don’tbreak defense, then head coach Todd Bowles can live with winning ugly. It’s a far better option than losing with style points.

The burgeoning back is well rested coming off the bye week, and he needed that luxury considering he’s likely to carry the football at least 20 times if things go right for Miami. Ajayi has had two-straight games in which he’s totaled over 200 yards rushing – just the fourth running back to do so consecutively in the Super Bowl era. Bowles knows how important it is for the Jets to slow down the red-hot Ajayi and make the Dolphins a onedimensional offense.

Brandon Marshall returns to South Florida this week. GETTY IMAGES
2Dominate up front
Another chess match will
be how wideout Brandon Marshall does against Miami’s top corner, Byron Maxwell. Marshall, a former Dolphin, has made waves this week calling out both the team for dismissing him and the corner who he claims has cover skills that are a little too close for comfort. “I played against him last year and he just held every single play,â€? Marshall said, recalling their encounter when Maxwell was on the Eagles. “Every single play he held. That was tough. ‌ I’m excited [for the rematch], because I owe him one. They traded for him to stop me, so I’m excited for this matchup.â€? Marshall is also still perturbed by the Dolphins, who traded for him with the Denver Broncos in 2010, only to quickly turn around and trade him to Chicago.

Bowles was effusive in his praise of Miami’s offensive line — well, effusive for him, anyway. But the Jets have a great counter in their star-studded defensive line. Pro-Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson has been dealing with an ankle issue for a couple weeks and his status is up in the air. But even without him, the Jets’ front line is full of very good players. Defensive end Sheldon Richardson has picked up the slack in recent games and has been a terror. Not to mention secondyear lineman Leonard Williams and nose tackle Steve McLendon have upped their performances as well.

Aries Don’t let anything cause you stress or anxiety. Stay focused on what you do best, and spend time with someone supportive. Personal pampering will do you good.
Libra Avoid arguments; it will be impossible to win them today. Take a time-out to work on your own problems instead of getting involved in someone else’s business.
Taurus Sharing information with a good friend will lead to an interesting venture. Personal changes should be made for the right reasons.
Scorpio Delve into something that excites you. If you offer creative suggestions, you’ll persuade someone special to get involved in an important project.
Gemini Don’t lend or borrow money or possessions. An offer made to you will have unfavorable strings attached. Don’t settle for less than you are worth.
Sagittarius An emotional matter will affect your ability to take care of your responsibilities. If you use your imagination, you will come up with a solution.
Cancer If you express your interest in others’ activities, you will gain insight into new possibilities. Exchange information and consider forming a partnership with someone.
Capricorn Strong emotions will surface, but your gut feeling will be on target. Follow your instincts and do whatever you must to secure and brighten your prospects.
Leo Broaden your horizons. Make changes to your lifestyle or profession. Offering a service or personal skill in a different capacity will lead to new possibilities.
Aquarius Give your honest opinion or don’t say anything at all. Your reputation will depend on how honest you are. Personal change should be your priority.
Virgo Communication will be your forte. Don’t back away from trouble when you can use your insight to find workable solutions. You can make a difference.
Pisces Investigate your options and negotiate to get what you want. Take care of your health. A rigorous routine and proper diet will get you into tip-top shape. EUGENIA LAST
