A South Carolina authorities said on Saturday that Todd Kohlepp, the suspect they arrested before discovering the body of a man whose girlfriend was found chained alive in a storage container, had confessed to killing six other people. The confession came a day after the woman who was found in the container told law enforcement that there were four bodies buried on the site. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said on Saturday night that Kohlepp had admitted to killing four people at a motorcycle shop in 2003 and also led authorities to the site of two more bodies buried on his South Carolina property. Wright said more bodies could be found, without elaborating. On Friday a body was found the 100-acre property in the town of Woodruff, northeast of Greenville, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said. A U.S.-backed alliance of Syrian armed groups said it had launched an operation to retake the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of Islamic State in Syria. The new offensive ratchets up pressure on the militant group at a critical moment, with its fighters already battling an assault by Iraqi security forces on their remaining Iraqi stronghold in the northern city of Mosul. A statement issued by the U.S.-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab armed groups, said the campaign, called Euphrates Anger, had begun on Saturday evening. An SDF spokesman had earlier been quoted on Sunday saying it would start within hours. “The general command of the Syria Democratic Forces announces the blessed start of its major military campaign to liberate the city of Raqqa,” Jehan Sheikh Amad, an SDF spokeswoman, told a news conference. SAMSUNG TO LAUNCH AI DIGITAL ASSISTANT SERVICE FOR GALAXY S8

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Sunday it would launch an artificial intelligence digital assistant service for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, seeking to rebound from the Galaxy Note 7’s collapse and differentiate its devices. The world’s top smartphone maker in October announced the acquisition of Viv Labs Inc, a firm run by a co-creator of Apple Inc’s Siri voice assistant program. Samsung plans to integrate the San Jose-based company’s AI platform, called Viv, into the Galaxy smartphones and expand voice-assistant services to home appliances and wearable technology devices. Samsung is counting on the Galaxy S8 to help revive smartphone momentum after scrapping the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7, which will hit its profit by $5.4 billion over three quarters through the first quarter of 2017. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, 20, takes first-place in men’s race Kenyan Mary Keitany and Eritrean world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie powered to dominant victories Sunday in the New York City Marathon.

Keitany broke from the women’s pack early in the race and finished in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 26 seconds. No other woman competitor was in sight as she crossed the finish line. The 34-year-old runner is the first woman to win three marathons in a row since Grete Waitz was five from 1982 to

1986, according to The New York Times. Compatriot Sally Kipyego took second in 2:28.01 and U.S. Olympian Molly Huddle made her marathon debut in an impressive 2:28:13 for third. The 20-year-old Ghebreslassie won the men’s race in an unofficial two hours, seven

minutes and 51 seconds, more than a minute ahead of Kenyan Lucas Rotich. Third went to 39-yearold American Abdi Abdirahman (2:11:23). Defending champion Stanley Biwott, suffering from calf problems, was never a factor and dropped out before 10 miles. REUTERS

State lawmaker accused of child abuse A New York State Assemblywoman was arrested Saturday for alleged child abuse reported by her 13-yearold son, according to news reports. Diana Richardson’s son walked into the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn on Friday and told police that his mother beat him with a broomstick because of his bad grades. The distraught boy showed officers a contusion on his left arm that he said his mother inflicted during a fight about his report card, police said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, police said. Richardson, 33, was

arrested in her Crown Heights home at 1 a.m. Police said she admitted to beating the boy after he refused to write an essay about how to improve his grades and

pushed her. Richardson is completing her first term in Brooklyn’s 43rd District which includes Crown Heights, Wingate, East Flatbush

and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. On social media, she has called her son her “greatest achievement.” She commented in January 2015, “He is a pain in my side but I love him anyway!” She was charged with assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing. She was released without bail and is due back in court on Jan. 10. There was no information available as to whether she has obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charges in her behalf. Sexting, cybersex addiction a growing problem, therapists say Anthony Weiner entered a rehab center after investigators started to look into his contact with a teen in North Carolina. ALAN KRAWITZ @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Recent news that Anthony Weiner had entered an in-patient cybersex rehab facility in Tennessee has generated some interest in what type of treatment he’ll receive and whether it can help the disgraced political figure. Addiction experts say that Weiner’s rehab will likely use some of the same treatments that are used for people addicted to drugs and alcohol. “He [Weiner] might get various types of treatments including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, which is a type of treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors,” said Puja Hall, a licensed psychothera-

pist who specializes in the treatment of sex addiction and is also the founder of the New York Center for Sexuality and Sex Addiction Treatment. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders including phobias, addictions, depression, and anxiety. “You also need to address the underlying issues, such as the need for adoration from people and validation… these are all connected to strong compulsive and in this case self-destructive behaviors that led to his sexting,” she said. The report about Weiner entering cybersex rehab follows a string of sexting scandals that forced the former congressman from office, derailed his bid for mayor in 2013 and threatened to impact Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s chances in the presidential election. Weiner’s sexting recently attracted national attention when investigators looking into his alleged contact with a

15-year-old North Carolina girl found emails on his computer from Hillary Clinton’s private server. Soon after that revelation, he separated from his wife, Clinton aide Huma Adedin. Hall said Weiner’s treatment might include group and individual therapies, such as Sex

Addicts Anonymous, similar to 12-step programs for alcohol abuse where “sponsors,” or designated people, are used as support mechanisms. Such rebab centers typically ban electronic devices and patients are separated by gender. Cybersex addiction isn’t uncommon, Hall

Cop wounded in Bronx shootout recovering as city mourns another fallen officer An NYPD sergeant is recovering after being shot in a Bronx gun battle, which claimed the life of another sergeant, police said. Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo was hit in the leg, and Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo was fatally shot in the forehead Friday afternoon during a shootout with Manuel Rosales, 35, on Beach Avenue in Van Nest. Kwo, 30, was released from Jacobi Medical Center late Friday, police said. The city is morning Tuozzolo, 41, a 19-year veteran of the NYPD. and ribbons were displayed in his community and at the 43rd Precinct. Members of the Sergeants Benevolent Association created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the NYPD Widows and Children’s Fund. As of press time, the campaign had raised $45,300 of their $100,000 goal. The money is to be given as a scholarship for the slain officer’s two children. Surveillance video captured the moments when the officers approached Rosales, who then opened fire with a Colt .45 handgun, hitting Tuozzolo in the head. Rosales was carrying multiple weapons when he broke into his

estranged wife’s home around 3 p.m., police said. The 29-year-old woman was home with their 3-year-old son, along with a 50-year-old woman and a 13-year-old child, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said. Kwo sustained a gunshot wound in the leg but managed to take cover behind a car while also shooting at Rosales. Other officers who arrived at the scene continued to shoot and kill Rosales. Rosales had 17 other arrests on his record, police said. The two officers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where Tuozzolo was pronounced dead. AMANDA MIKELBERG

said. “Anybody can be vulnerable, it’s so prevalent nowadays, especially with all that’s out there including online porn and dating sites,” she said. Dr. Jennifer Schneider, a specialist in addictive sexual disorders, seemed to agree, writing that “cybersex is particu-

larly dangerous because it can rapidly lure in someone who has never had any kind of internet addiction before.” She notes that “The financial cost is low, the rewards seem immediate and it’s available aroundthe-clock – causing cybersex to be compared to some types of addictive street drugs.” Hall was careful, though, about speculating about Weiner’s specific condition, saying although Weiner certainly appears to needs a lot of attention; a thorough interview would be required to fully assess his condition. “He repeatedly put himself in risky, dangerous situations that were very damaging … it is heart-breaking in a way,” she said, adding that there was “certainly some level of compulsivity he didn’t have control over.” Hall is optimistic about Weiner’s chances for recovery. “If he is motivated, then he has a good chance for recovery,” she said. “People can recover, they do it every day, but they have to be motivated themselves.”

POST-ELECTION EXTRA-SUPERMOON COMING

GETTY IMAGES

Bolaris’ Weather Watch

JOHN BOLARIS

@weathersavior

Sometimes as a meteorologist, when the weather looks quite tranquil from coast to coast, you look for a little nugget, something to ponder. Not only can we look forward to a supermoon, which is a full moon with the closest approach the moon makes to the earth, but it will be an extra-supermoon as its perceived size and brightness will be the largest in almost a century. The last time we had an extra-supermoon was in January of 1948, also an election year. On Nov. 2 of that year, President Harry S. Truman, the Democratic incumbent, defeated Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican nominee. The 1948 election is considered to be the greatest election

upset in American history. Virtually every prediction had Dewey easily defeating Truman. The extra-supermoon will occur on Monday, Nov. 14. Its size will appear to be 14 percent larger and its brightness will increase by 30 percent. If the skies are clear, it will be a brilliant display. If skies are cloudy, you’ll need to wait until September of 2034 for the next one. Now if you would like to take this into the astrological realm, astrologist Serge Bernard, who has been an astrologer since 1975, gives his bottom line on what it might or might not mean for the upcoming election. “I am anticipating that unexpected events are likely to happen between now, the inauguration and even after,” he predicts. “New key revelations have a high probability to be brought to light. All along this U.S. election has been unconventional and so its outcome is expected too. We are living in confusing times, more critical

truths are likely to come out and more surprising events are to be anticipated. I am leaving to your imagination what those future events might be.” Oh, by the way, the weather will be gorgeous for this Election Day. Sunny skies with temperatures in the 60s will make it a no-excuse Tuesday to get out and vote.

Ambrose, Newark’s director of public safety, during a news conference. Two of the victims later died of their wounds while the remaining three were hospitalized, authorities said. The deceased were identified only as an 8-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and a 23-year-old woman. The wounded victims were described as a 29-year-old woman and two 13-year-old children, a boy and a girl.

The woman, the mother of at least one of the younger victims, was listed in stable condition, while there was no information immediately available on the status of the children. Authorities said they were seeking 26-year-old Jeremy Arrington for questioning. Police and prosecutors said Arrington, a Newark resident, was not a suspect in the stabbings but was considered a “person of interest.” REUTERS

Jump in Florida, Nevada early voting could reap Latino gains for Clinton Clinton has polled much stronger among Latino voters nationwide, suggesting she would benefit more from a surge in early voting in those two states, voting experts say. The man answering a volunteer’s knock on the door in the Kendall section of Miami-Dade County on Saturday was emphatic: Not only would he vote but “esperamos que la presidenta gane” — Spanish for “we hope Madam President wins.” Volunteers across Florida made a last-minute push to get voters to the polls this weekend with early voting ending on Sunday ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, pitting Republican Donald Trump against Democrat Hillary Clinton, or “la presidenta,” as the man at the door called her. Latino voters like the man in Kendall and elsewhere could have an outsized influence in Tuesday’s election. Early voting data may portend a jump in the number of Hispanic voters this year, especially in the key swing states of Florida and Nevada. A recent poll conducted by the firms The Tarrance Group and Bendixen and Amandi found that Hispanic registered voters in Florida favor Clinton 60 percent to 30 percent. In Nevada the gap was even wider — 72 percent for Clinton and 19 percent for Trump. In Florida, the Clinton campaign estimates early Latino voting is up 139 percent, or more than twice as much, compared to 2012, according to a Wednesday field report. Democratic strategist Steve Schale, a Florida expert, estimated that 170,000 more Hispanics had voted early or by mail as of Wednesday than had voted early or by mail in

“And keep in mind, because Hispanic is a self-identifying marker, studies have found that the real Hispanic vote is larger than the registration. So while Hispanics might make up 14.2 percent of the voters who have voted so far, in reality, the number is larger.” A sign in Spanish is posted outside an early voting site at Downtown Sum-

the entire 2012 election, merlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. GETTY IMAGES according to a post on his blog. “And keep in mind, because Hispanic is a selfidentifying marker, studies have found that the real Hispanic vote is larger than the registration. So while Hispanics might make up 14.2 percent of the voters who have voted so far, in reality, the number is larger,” he wrote. But the raw data leave a number of questions. Will Latinos keep up the higher turnout rates on Election Day? For which candidate did they vote? Will turnout from Latinos and other minorities make enough of a difference to swing Florida and other states? Trump kicked off his maverick campaign last year by calling many Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals, and his relationship with Latinos hardly improved from there. From his calls to build a wall on the border and have Mexico pay for it, to comments that an American-born judge could not do his job because of his Mexican heritage, Trump has consistently had low polling figures with Latinos across the country. The state of Nevada does not note race or ethnicity on its voter registration but other data there suggest Latinos also are turning out in force. For one thing, Clark County has seen a surge in early voting. Between inperson and absentee voting, registered Democrats have now returned over 72,000 more ballots than registered Republicans there. Those figures do not indicate which candidate voters picked, only the party with which the voters are registered. Friday alone saw 57,172 votes in person in Clark County. Photos making the rounds on social media showed especially long lines at a Cardenas market voting site, which stayed open late to accommodate the surge of voters. REUTERS

In another surprise move, FBI Director James Comey wrote a new letter to Congress on Sunday stating that he and the agency have not changed their position that Hillary Clinton should not face criminal charges related to her use of private email. The letter delivered Sunday to Republicans on the House Oversight Committee stated that the FBI “has not changed its conclusions expressed in July with respect to Sec-

retary Clinton.” “I write to supplement my October 28, 2016 letter that notified you the FBI would be taking additional investigative steps with respect to former Secretary of State Clinton’s use of a personal email server,” Comey wrote. “Since my letter, the FBI investigative team has been working around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation.” In July, Comey concluded that “we cannot find a case that would support bringing criminal charges on these facts.” The majority of the emails found on a decadeold computer seized in a sexting investigation of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton’s aide Huma Abedin, were mostly duplicates of the emails reviewed previously, CNN reported. At a rally in North Carolina, Donald Trump continued to claim that his opponent is guilty of treason. “Mishandling classified information is a crime,” he said. “Hillary Clinton will be under investigation for a long, long time for her many crimes against our nation, our people, our democracy, likely concluding in a criminal trial,” Trump said in North Carolina. Supporters chanted, “Lock her up! Lock her up!” Comey faced an onslaught of criticism for apparently insinuating 11 days before Election Day that the Democratic

nominee engaged in criminal misconduct with regards to classified information. “The FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation,” and the agency will work to “determine whether they contain classified information.” Both Democrats and Republicans demanded more information from

the FBI director. “By providing selective information, he’s allowed partisans to distort and exaggerate in order to inflict maximum political damage and no one can separate what is true from what is not because Comey has not been forthcoming with the facts,” Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta said.

The rules overturned by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals would have imposed greater penalties on people who harass voters during Tuesday’s election. Voter intimidation already is prohibited under U.S. law but Democrats have pushed for greater restrictions in Ohio and five other battleground states, citing concerns that Trump’s

heated rhetoric might inspire Election Day chaos. On the campaign trail, Trump has warned the election may be rigged and has called on supporters to keep an eye on voting activity for possible signs of fraud in large cities. Numerous studies have found that U.S. voter fraud is exceedingly rare.

BRIEF US appeals court removes new voter-intimidation rules in Ohio Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won a legal battle on Sunday when a U.S. appeals court in Ohio removed new restrictions on partisan poll watchers that Democrats had sought to prevent Election Day voter intimidation.

Several intriguing scenarios could unfold after Tuesday’s election to break the deadlock over filling a Supreme Court vacancy that has provoked a bitter ninemonth standoff between President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans. Obama nominated U.S. Appeals Court Judge Merrick Garland on March 16 to replace long-serving conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who died on Feb. 13. The Republicanled Senate, in a move with little precedent, has refused to consider the nomination, saying the winner of the presidential election should make the pick. If Republican Donald Trump wins, Garland’s nomination would be dead. Trump has already put forth a list of conservative jurists as potential nominees. If Obama’s fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton wins, there are ways Garland could secure Senate confirmation to the lifetime post before Obama leaves office on Jan. 20. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has been adamant that Obama’s successor should select Scalia’s replace-

ment and that he will not consider Garland’s nomination during a postelection “lame duck session. But McConnell could come under pressure by some Senate Republicans to allow confirmation hearings and a vote on Garland, who has a reputation in Washington as a moderate, out of fear Clinton could instead choose a more liberal nominee. The Senate’s inaction on Garland has made the Supreme Court a potent issue in the election. After many years of leaning conservative, a new Democratic appointment could tilt the court to the left for the first time in decades. Scalia’s death left the court split with four liberals and four

conservatives. Conservative activists dismiss the notion Garland is a moderate, saying he would vote with the four liberal justices on major, ideologically divisive issues. “Garland is a liberal, not a centrist, said Carrie Severino, a lawyer with the Judicial Crisis Network. Liberal activists like Caroline Fredrickson, president of the American Constitution Society, said Republicans should move forward on Garland. “He’s got every qualification you could ask for. He’s exactly the type of judge they claimed they wanted, Fredrickson said. If Democrats win control of the Senate in Tuesday’s election, the new congressional session would begin on Jan. 3, and they could decide to move forward immediately on Garland’s nomination before Obama’s term ends. Social media helps US millennial voters register, turnout worries linger Political experts are skeptical that a record number of millennials who signed up to vote will actually result in the 18- to 34-year-old age group turning out at the polls in proportion to their relative size of the population. As the youngest members of the millennial generation became old enough to vote in this year’s presidential election, states and social media platforms poured efforts into online registration, hoping to attract these tech savvy voters who now rival baby boomers as the country’s largest demo-

graphic. Millennials make up approximately 31 percent of U.S. citizens eligible to vote, according to the Pew Research Center, on par for the first time with baby boomers, who are typically aged 52-70 years old. There are an estimated 225.8 million eligible U.S. voters. Millennials have so far, however, turned out in much lower numbers in elections than baby boomers. In 2008, a record year for millennial turnout, just 50 percent of those eligible to vote did so, the National Census Bureau said. That compared with turnout rates of 69 percent for baby boomers and 61 percent for people aged 36 to 51, also known as Generation X. This year, a number

an Instagram post urging people to vote. According to a survey of state electoral officials and voter nonprofits around the United States, these social media campaigns have paid off, at least when it came to getting young voters registered. A survey of 2,000 millennials conducted by social media platform Yik Yak, which is known for its popularity among college students and teens, showed that 62 percent registered to vote for the first time this year and, of those, 9 percent registered online following a social media prompt. In California, roughly 31 percent of all registered voters are now aged 18-35. A Facebook reminder on May 16 coincided with 143,255 people registering or updating their registra-

tions online that day in the state, compared to an average of 23,166 per day that month, said California secretary of state spokesman Sam Mahood. Other states reported similar spikes. In Oregon, more than 420,000 people registered to vote online in 2016, up from 2012 when 163,545 used the online system. Digital voter enrollments in Washington jumped by roughly 135,000 in 2016, compared to 2012. From January through mid-Oc-

tober this year, 381,318 people used the online system in Indiana, nearly three times as many as in 2012. â€œLet’s face it — that’s where [younger voters] are; they’re on social media,â€? said Denise Merrill, the secretary of state for Connecticut, which used social media campaigns, including a dedicated hashtag and Facebook’s banner ads, to drive registrations. “Whatever we’re doing, we’re having pretty dramatic results.â€? Like a lot of experts, Donald Green, a professor of political science at Columbia University, is skeptical that an increase in young voter registration will correspond with millennials unseating the baby boomers as the most active voting bloc. Green conceded that there was “change afoot,â€? but said he thought it would far more gradual. By his estimate, it would be 25 years before millennials overtake baby boomers, or what he dubbed “generational replacement.â€? “In presidential elections the translation of new registration to votes is more like one half or one third,â€? he said. Michael Cornfield, an associate professor of political management at George Washington University, agreed that registering someone to vote does not guarantee they’ll show up on Election Day. REUTERS

Blac Chyna goes off on Wendy Williams

Would you pay $500K for Justin Bieber’s New Year’s Eve VIP experience? Partygoers are used to shelling out a little extra cash to have a great time on New Year’s Eve. Bars and clubs jack up their cover charges; many sell out in advance. You need a new outfit and champagne is mandatory. But a few hundred bucks is still only a penny in the bucket next to the lucky person who snags the Ultimate VIP Package for Justin Bieber’s New Year’s Eve concert. The Fontainebleau hotel in Miami is offering an exclusive NYE experience that includes five nights accommodations in their suites for up to 10 guests, free access to luxury cars, a private escort to Skrillex’s set, a stage-front table at Justin’s concert, plus a two-hour spa

treatment and bloody mary bar to soothe the next day’s hangover. The experience will be sold to the first person to shell out $500,000. For this much money, Justin better be jumping in the jacuzzi next to you.

Talk show host Wendy Williams hit a sore spot with Blac Chyna during a segment on her show Friday. Wendy ranted about Rob Kardashian lacking confidence and being taken advantage of by Chyna and her mother for money and fame. Needless to say, Rob’s pregnant fiancee wasn’t happy. Blac Chyna posted a less than flattering picture of Wendy on her Instagram and let her have it in the caption. She raged: “You go out there talking about my family like you just hit the pipe backstage! When I decided to do this show I knew I would be letting the world see us. Taking the time Black Rebel Motorcycle Club aimed for thoughtfulness with their latest album. LINDA LABAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

More than a couple of years have passed since Black Rebel Motorcycle Club released their seventh album “Specter at the Feast” back in 2013. Should we be worried about the garage-psych trio’s relative silence since touring for that record wrapped in 2014? Clearly not, because the Los Angeles-based band is playing a fall co-headlining tour with Death From Above 1979, and openers Deap Vally. The tour could be

one of the hottest triple shots of the year, but there’s even better news for BRMC fans: they’re working on their unannounced next album and at some shows have aired new songs. Drummer Leah Shapiro spoke to us during a noisy soundcheck in a hot, humid Austin. Is BRMC touring to road test new songs or to blow off the cobwebs? It’s a bit of both, really. We have road tested a couple of the new songs. But we’re also writing on the road. We usually use soundcheck to write and get new ideas going. It’s more fun working things out on a big stage where things sound really good. It’s better than our small

Since touring the last album, you underwent major surgery. Yeah. Ugh! It was for a neurological disease. Brain surgery, that’s no

fun. There are many other things I would rather have been doing, but I’m recovered now. The last album took two years to make. Is there any set timeframe to finish this record? slapping something out. It’s hard to put a deadline on making a record. If you do you’re setting yourself up for stress. We just try to focus on writing and let other people stress about that. Ideally the recording process should be enjoyable. Is it? It does get to the point where you are in the

rabbit hole focused on one thing. We can spend a lot of time working out arrangements. We try every option before settling on something. You can get lost in that and be there forever. Sometimes you get so close to something that you lose perspective. You have to pull out at some point. It helps to have someone to yank you out of that.

How to break into investigative journalism New Yorker writer Sarah Stillman shares some tips of the trade. SARA FEINSTEIN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

As a staff writer at The New Yorker, professor of creative nonfiction at Yale and recent recipient of the 2016 MacArthur grant, Sarah Stillman has mastered the art of long-form investigative journalism. She’s made a career of immersing herself in the issues and communities the mainstream media often skims over. Increasingly, there’s this incredible network of nonprofit journalistic institutions that are helping to support writers with these kind of projects. After completing all of your research, how do you sift through the information and actually begin writing? I’m someone who is overly obsessive with my process and reports 50 times the amount of material I actually need. I always sit down and make a list of the five core things that I can’t live without in the story, fordable or free resources in their area, such as the Boys and Girls Club of America, or ask their child’s teacher to set aside time in the morning for extra help.

Monitor down time While homework and study time is important, a student’s schedule should also incorporate breaks. “Understanding when a student likes downtime

and then I figure out how they are connected and how I’m going to weave them together. What’s the most crucial skill for young journalists to develop? It takes an incredible amount of persistence. You can’t be willing to give up at the first rejection or to let a story go by the wayside because you’re not making immediate headway. It’s also crucial for journalists to have an open mind. I came at this as somebody who trained in anthropology and ethnography, and part of the fundamentals of that field is recognizing that it takes a deep investment of time and

care to try to even begin to scratch the surface of another person’s world.

preparing for tests can be a challenge, which is why it’s important for parents to offer frequent encouragement. “Giving positive feedback and celebrating academic successes along the way helps children believe in themselves and feel more prepared,” says O’Connor. For even more support, O’Connor suggests parents help their children study at home by testing them with flash cards. SARA FEINSTEIN

Are there any books or authors you would recommend ? Katherine Boo is my absolute hero when it comes to narrative journalism. She’s someone who writes with such granular, obsessive compassion and detail, and spends a lot of time with sources, getting to know the ins and outs of their lives. David Grann is also another masterful storyteller. In terms of books, “Telling True Stories” has been a really helpful guide both for me and for my students.

Giants hang on, best Eagles and their fourth down woes New York moves to 5-3 after a big win at home Sunday. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Eli Manning was the story for the Giants Sunday, as the two-time Super Bowl champ fired off four touchdown passes on 22for-36 passing, tallying 257 yards in a win that moves New York to 5-3 on the year. He didn’t do it himself, as was clearly visible to anyone watching the Week 9 showdown. His defense bailed him out — quite a few times. Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz had a career-high in yards on the other sideline, compiling 364 but he won’t be the story on Philly talk radio this week. Instead it was head coach Doug Pederson, who peculiarly went for it twice on fourth and short in the fourth quarter, opting not to take three points in both situations — each costing Philly big time in the loss moving the team to 4-4. In the key Philly drive with seven minutes on the clock, a dropped Nelson Agholor pass on third down forced Pederson to go for it on fourth-andnine. Jordan Matthews converted the third fourth down try for the Eagles on a pass right over the middle to keep the drive alive. Caleb Sturgis hit a 39-yard field goal to cut the Giants lead to 28-23 with just under four minutes to play. With the Giants ready run down the clock inside the two-minute warning, a tipped pass by Connor Barwin ended up in Jordan Hicks’ hands — the interception setting Wentz up one more time with the chance to make a game-winning march. Fittingly, it took a fourth fourth-down try for the Eagles to keep their hopes alive but Wentz’s fade toss to Matthews in the corner of the Eagles’ end zone hit the turf and that was that. Wentz threw two in-

terceptions in the first quarter for the second time in three games. But unlike in their defensively dominant win over the Vikings in Week 7, the Giants turned both turnovers into points, with touchdown passes to Odell Beckham Jr., and then to Roger Lewis. The picks made by Landon Collins and Andrew Adams put the Giants up 14-0, and after two long drives from Philly resulted in a chip shot field goal and missed fourthand-two try, New York was up 14-3 and rolling. The ugly fourth-down play was a designed Wentz run that lost 5 yards, and lost Philly possession. But the Eagles defense settled down getting a couple key stops and Wentz eventually found his groove as well, connecting on a deep bomb to newly activated rookie Bryce Treggs for 58 yards to set up an 8-yard Ryan Matthews run to cut things to 14-10. The Giants got their lead back to two scores midway through the second, finishing an 86-yard drive with a second TD pass to ODB in the back of the end zone. Philly once again came away with zero points on a short field a drive later, when a near punt return for a touchdown by Darren Sproles resulted in

another red zone fourthdown try — this one a failed Sproles scamper. A leaping Jason PierrePaul block of a Sturgis field goal try took more points off the board and shifted momentum to New York’s side. The Giants failed on their own fourth-andshort try, and the two rivals went to the locker room with a 21-10 spread. After a short break, the Eagles came out with energy on offense, plowing downfield thanks to a big Sproles run and big catches by Agholor and Matthews, setting up a Kenjon Barner touchdown run to cut the Giants lead to 2117. The Giants’ energy was just as high on their ensuing drive, as Sterling Shepherd beat Malcolm Jenkins deep catching a 32-yard bomb to up the lead, once again to 11 points. The Eagles cut it to a one possession game after more impressive offense, driving deep into Giants territory before settling for a field goal and 28-20 deficit. They after a few first down runs from Paul Perkins, Nolan Carroll III ripped a pass out of Beckham’s chest for an interception. The turnover didn’t lead to much offense for Philly, which went three-and-out.

Jets find new ways to lose in Miami The Jets couldn’t figure out their AFC East rivals in a painful Week 9 setback. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

The Jets lost in the most Jets’ way possible in a stunning 27-23 defeat to

the Miami Dolphins. The fact the Jets (3-6) lost to the Dolphins (44) wasn’t the shocking point, although Gang Green had enjoyed recent success playing in Miami. But it was how New York managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.  Neither team played as if they wanted to win

this game, as the contest was marred by penalties and questionable play calling. But when the Dolphins needed to make a play and snatch this win out of the Jets’ hands, they found a way. It was a weird game with little ebb and flow, as neither squad was able capitalize on the other’s mistakes — particularly in the fourth quarter.    A microcosm of the afternoon came midway through the final stanza. New York quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was picked off in the end zone with seven minutes remaining in the game on a misread third-down attempt with only rookie Robbie Anderson in the area. Surprisingly, the erroneous throw didn’t hurt Gang Green, as the Dolphins went threeand-out on the ensuing series, which culminated in punter Matt Darr’s flubbed catch on the snap on the very next play at Miami’s 18-yard

line. It set up Jalin Marshall’s first-career touchdown, two plays later — an 18-yard grab with 5:42 remaining, which gave Gang Green hope they’d escape with a win.  It seemed the Jets were primed for its thirdstraight win and maybe get back into the AFC’s wild card race. But Jets’ things happened on

the ensuing kickoff, as rookie Kenyan Drake went 96 yards for the eventual game-winning touchdown following an offsides penalty against safety Antonio Allen on the previous kickoff attempt. Â The Dolphins got a new lease on life, Drake took it to the house, and it essentially buried the

Jets’ hopes of making an amazing second-half playoff surge. Linebacker Julian Stanford sealed Gang Green’s fate on the next Miami possession with a pass interference call while guarding backup tight end Dominique Jones on third-and-1 near midfield, with the Jets clinging to minimal hope.  Â

Aries Don’t wait for someone else to take charge. Step up and do your thing. A positive change will surprise someone from your past. A new opportunity is apparent.

Libra Work on you. Self-improvement will bring happiness and satisfaction. Trying to change others will result in disappointment and an unwanted change in relationships.

Taurus Refuse to allow negativity and emotional stress to affect you. A creative approach coupled with kindness and understanding will be your ticket to success.

Scorpio Follow your desires, and make each moment count. Look for the good and the positive in every situation and act accordingly. Don’t give in to negativity or bullying.

Gemini Evaluate your current personal position, and discuss what you want to do with someone you trust and respect. Only then will you be able to make the best decision.

Sagittarius A business trip or meeting will result in an opportunity. Don’t be reluctant to make suggestions. An honest and emotional response will help prevent deception.

Cancer Do your own thing. Explore creative pursuits and consider attending an event that will broaden your outlook or teach you tricks that will speed up daily chores.

Capricorn Don’t let your emotions cost you. If you believe in what you have to offer, so will everyone you encounter. Be true to yourself, and focus on getting things done.

Leo Verbal confrontations will not be in your best interest. Stick to the truth, but don’t give the impression you know everything. You will gain more from listening.

Aquarius Think before you speak. Letting your emotions take control will not help you get your way. A moneymaking opportunity will require finesse and patience.

Virgo Stay focused on what’s important to you. Check out new ways of accomplishing old goals. Your persistence and ability to articulate what you want will serve you well.

Pisces A situation will require an intellectual, rather than physical, response. Protect yourself against being hurt or used by someone who has ulterior motives. EUGENIA LAST
