3 things you need to know AT UNDER $5 EACH, TRUMP’S VOTES CAME CHEAP

Donald Trump pulled off one of the biggest upsets in American political history when he toppled Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential election Tuesday — and he did it using far less cash than his rival. Relying heavily on an unorthodox mix of social media, unfiltered rhetoric and a knack for winning free TV time, the New York real estate businessman likely paid less than $5 per vote during his insurgent White House bid, about half what Clinton paid, according to a Reuters analysis of campaign finance records and voting data. Those figures assume the candidates spent all the funds they raised. Trump’s cost-effective win has upended prevailing concepts about the influence of money in American politics and raised the question of whether a lean, media-savvy campaign can become the new model for winning office in the United States. GM TO LAY OFF 2,000 WORKERS AT TWO US PLANTS
2
General Motors Co. plans to lay off 2,000 employees at two U.S. auto plants in early 2017, the automaker said Wednesday. GM said it will furlough the employees when it cuts the third shift at its Lordstown, Ohio, and Lansing, Michigan, plants in midJanuary. The Lordstown plant builds the compact Chevrolet Cruze, whose U.S. sales through October were down 20 percent. The Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS, whose sales were down 17 percent through October. GM also said it will invest $211 million at the Lansing plant for an unspecified “new-product program.” The company also will invest $668 million in its Toledo transmission plant for a new generation of transmissions. SODA TAXES SPREAD AFTER VOTES IN FOUR US CITIES
3
Three California cities voted for a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages and another in Colorado was likely to follow suit, unofficial election results showed Wednesday, as local governments’ push to cut soda consumption to stem obesity gathered speed. The votes on so-called soda taxes in San Francisco, Albany and Oakland in California and in Boulder, Colorado, came a month after the World Health Organization recommended governments impose such taxes to battle obesity, diabetes and other diet-related diseases. Tax proponents have recorded a series of victories in the United States this year, after numerous failed attempts. Opponents argue that the taxes hit lower-income populations hardest, and that it is unfair to single out soda in the battle to fight obesity and diabetes. REUTERS
If one man is to speak for Americans suffering post-election pain, that man might be Louis Tafuto from Warwick, New York, who filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Donald Trump for pain and suffering and civil rights violations. “Trump has strategically and continuously used false statements and assertions to mislead and coerce the undereducated to vote for him, support him, and act unlawfully on his behalf,” Tafuto states in the lawsuit which was filed on the eve of the election. He is one of millions of Americans who are grasping for ways to cope with the bitter disappointment of the outcome, experts said. On Wednesday, clinical psychologist and Stanford professor Dr. Thomas Plante’s inbox was flooded with clients, friends and colleagues seeking his advice and solace. “It’s that kind of devastation, panic, despondency, feeling broadsided that’s driving people right now,” Plante told Metro.
“People Trump insulted — people of color, transgender, gay — are quite scared about how their lives will go now.” Some officials are taking immediate action to curb the emotional and behavioral damage that might result, such as Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang, who announced Wednesday that counseling resources will be offered to students, their families and staff who are affected by the presidential election. “The coming days and weeks may be challenging for many, and celebratory for others,” Chang wrote. “As educators, we should use this opportunity as a teachable moment to have conversations with our students about the democratic process, how we can resolve differences and conflicts, and how we can address diverse and sometimes conflicting ideology.” Plante pointed out that many people who flocked to Trump saw him as a savior. The people of poorer, rural America “saw the world as they knew it disintegrate. Saw factories close, saw their lower level education not buy what it used to, saw more people of color come into the U.S. and see their jobs disappear. They see peo-

ple doing better and feel more marginalized, with little hope of a better life,” Plante explained. “They too want a better world and goodness and fairness,” he said. “One way to cope is to recognize that we all essentially want the same thing, and that for the most part people are good.” This might be an impetus for people to actually come together. One New York woman found a surprising effect in her online dating accounts: In one day she received three messages from men proposing marriage and referring to the election. She said the situation reminded her of the aftermath of 9/11 when New Yorkers perceptions of the world and sense of security were shattered, and drove many people apart or together. “The day after 9/11
people needed to connect. Anytime you go through a big life event and you’re single it’s more painful,” said Anne, 50, who asked that her last name not be used. “I think when something unusual and horrifying happens like this it reminds them that they are single and alone and that they don’t have anyone to turn to and confide in.” Plante also likened this election outcome to 9/11. “Maybe this is the worst thing that happened since 9/11, but New York rallied and didn’t roll up and die. We can pull a page from that playbook and say let’s do that again, we are going to be who we want to be not because of Washington but in spite of it.” Dr. Nuar Alsadir, a psychoanalyst and author, agreed with those who drew parallels to the terrorist attacks. “If I had to say a dominant reaction is shock, people are experiencing it as a catastrophe, one person likened it to how she felt after 9/11, fear dread,” she said. “Some are feeling moved, hope, reach for the goodness inside each other. I would say really, other people have likened it to a death. A death of the country as we know it, all that we achieved and what we worked for.”

Thousands take to the streets of Manhattan to protest Trump Thousands of protesters demonstrated against the election of Donald Trump outside Trump Tower in Manhattan.
“This is just the beginning of accomplishing that Trump steps down from the presidency.”

Thousands of protesters, joined by a makeshift marching band, rallied in Manhattan on Wednesday night to demonstrate their anger over the election of Republican Donald Trump as the nation’s next president. Some carried signs calling for the impeachment of the presidentelect. The demonstrators assembled at Union Square and other parts of the city. “We reject the president-elect,” they chanted. Protesters eventually marched to Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan and blocked traffic on Fifth Avenue and other streets in the area. Several people climbed atop scaffolding along the sidewalk. Security remained tight outside Trump Tower, where dump trucks filled with sand formed a protective barrier. Police officers monitored the crowd, but no

voice our opinion because that’s all we can do in this sad state of affairs,” she said. The protest in Manhattan was one of several anti-Trump demonstrations held nationwide. Hundreds also gathered in Philadelphia and Boston on Wednesday evening, and organizers planned rallies in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland, California. In Austin, the Texas capital, about 400 people marched through the streets, police said. In downtown Chicago, thousands more gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower while chanting phrases like “No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA.” Chicago police closed roads in the area, impeding the demonstrators’ path. There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence. Reuters contributed to this report
Metro poll: Many readers stunned by election, would consider emigrating Donald Trump stunned much of the nation with his victory, and readers who participated in Metro’s latest unscientific poll seemed to reflect that reaction and many added they would consider emigrating to another country as a result. We asked readers this question before the voting began on Election Day: “Regardless of whom you voted for, who do you think will win the election?”
Of the 206 readers who responded, 132 answered that they felt Hillary Clinton would prevail. In a related, tonguein-cheek question, Metro asked, “If your preferred candidate does not win the election, do you plan to leave the country? The idea of becoming expats apparently appealed to 76 of the 181 respondents, or 42 percent. The thought must have occurred to
many Americans, because Canada’s immigration website crashed on election night. Several U.S. celebrities had said they would move out of the country if Trump won the election. Among them were Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and the singers Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus and Cher. We’re not sure any of them responded to Metro’s online poll. focused on the election process itself. Trump won the presidency by capturing 279 electoral votes. As
everyone was reminded incessantly during televised coverage of the election, 270 electoral votes are needed to win the election. As Democrats were quick to point out Wednesday morning, more people from coast to coast voted for Hillary Clinton. She received nearly 59.6 million votes, nearly 234,000 more than Trump. So based on the popular vote, Clinton should
be president. But that’s not how it works. Determining the winner of presidential elections on the basis of the Electoral College has long been a topic of debate. So we asked readers to weigh in. Of the 179 readers who responded, 134 said that the popular vote should determine the outcome. Forty-five, roughly 25 percent, suggested we keep things as they are. GARY KANE

How the polls missed Trump’s victory In hindsight, the polling consensus went astray in two major ways. Two days ago, pollsters and statisticians gave Hillary Clinton odds of between 75 and 99 percent of winning the U.S. presidential election. How did so many get it so wrong?
The media, including Reuters, pumped out two kinds of poll stories. Some were national surveys designed to estimate the entire country’s popular vote, but not the outcome in individual states, where the contest is actually decided. These polls actually got the big picture right: Clinton won more overall votes than President-elect
Donald Trump — but not by as much as the polling averages predicted, and not where she needed to. News organizations also produced a blizzard of stories meant to calculate the probability of victory for the two candidates. These calculations were predicated on polls of individual states. In hindsight, though, the stories seem
to have overstated Clinton’s chances for a win by failing to see that a shift in voting patterns in some states could show up in other, similar states. In part, this is because polling analysts got the central metaphor wrong. U.S. presidents are chosen not by the national popular vote, but in the individual Electoral College

contests in the 50 states and Washington D.C. In calculating probable outcomes, election predictors generally treated those 51 contests as completely separate events – as unrelated to one another as a series of 51 coin tosses. But that’s not how elections work in the United States. Voting trends that appear in one state - such as a larger-than-expected Republican shift among rural voters - tend to show up in other states with similar demographic make-ups. And that’s what happened Tuesday: The election models calculated the probabilities of a Clinton win that turned out to be high, because they viewed each state too much in isolation. The Reuters/Ipsos States of the Nation project projected Clinton to win the popular vote 45 percent to 42 percent, and gave her a 90 percent probability of winning the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the election. In the end, Clinton won the popular vote by 47.7 percent to 47.5 percent, by the latest count, and Trump could win the Electoral College by as many as 303 votes to Clinton’s 233 when the tally is final. The state races were not akin to a string of coin tosses but more like 51 rolls of a set of weighted dice. In many states, it turned out, the side of the dice representing white voters in suburban and rural counties carried a heavier weight, and the side representing urban-
ites a lighter one. The problem, said Cliff Young, president of Ipsos Public Affairs US, the polling partner of Reuters, came down to the models the pollsters used to predict who would vote - the so-called likely voters. The models almost universally miscalculated how turnout was distributed among different demographic groups, Young said. And turnout was lower than expected, a result that generally favors Republican candidates. In 2000, when Republican George W. Bush beat Democrat Al Gore, for example, the turnout was about 60 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Eight years later, turnout was 64 percent when Democratic nominee Barack Obama won his first presidential election against Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain. This year, “whites with lower levels of education came out in greater relative numbers than younger, more-educated and minority voters,” Young said. “A point here or a point there can really change an election.” Ultimately, missing that shift in the state polls tripped up the predictions. It also highlights how the otherwise empirical process of polling rests on a subjective foundation. Each pollster must make a decision about turnout. Their decisions are informed by historical voting patterns. But the actual turnout in each state is unknowable before election day. REUTERS

BRIEF Clinton, Obama pledge to unite behind Trump presidency Republican Donald Trump put aside the celebrations and focused on his 73-day transition to the White House on Wednesday as rival Hillary Clinton promised to bury the bitterness of their long presidential race and work to unify a divided country. After Trump’s stunning upset of the heavily favored Clinton, Democratic President Barack Obama and leading figures in
the Republican Party who had struggled to make peace with Trump all vowed to move past the ugliness of an angry campaign to seek common ground. “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead,” Clinton, the Democratic nominee, said in a concession speech in New York, joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and daughter Chelsea. With a row of American flags
in the background, she told supporters her loss was painful “and it will be for a long time,” and that she had offered to work with Trump as he prepares to begin his four-year term on Jan. 20. A wealthy real estate developer and former reality TV host, Trump rode a wave of anger toward Washington insiders to win Tuesday’s election against Clinton, whose gold-plated establishment resume included stints as a first lady, U.S. senator and
Obama’s secretary of state. Trump’s victory marked a crushing end to Clinton’s second quest to be the first woman elected president. She also failed in a White House bid in 2008. Obama, who campaigned hard against Trump, invited him to the White House for a meeting on Thursday after a brutal night for the Democratic Party, which also fell short of recapturing majorities in both chambers of Congress. MANDATE? NOT SO FAST If Paul Ryan is no fan of Donald Trump. He’s made that clear for months. Yet within hours of this week’s upset victory, the speaker of the House was praising the man. “This is the most incredible political feat I have seen in my lifetime,” Ryan said. “He heard those voices out there that other people weren’t hearing and he just earned a mandate.” Maybe Ryan is just trying to save his job after a political realignment. (And going from reality show, real estate mogul to most powerful person on the planet is a heck of a realignment.) But there are two things wrong with Ryan’s assessment. First, the frustration, despair and anger of working-class Americans have been growing for years; easily found in thundering emails to Congress, raging town hall meetings, bitter memes on the internet and poisonous words on talk radio. “You have forgotten us!” the small and medium-size towns scream amid soaring rural suicide rates, boarded up main streets, insane levels of substance abuse down farm roads and the withering conviction there is no future for their kids except in some distant metropolis. Anyone could hear that, and everyone in D.C. did. They just ignored it. The problems seemed too intractable, the affected populations too spread out, and after all, globalization has been great for the cities where pretty much all the power players, left and right, spend their time. But the second flaw in Ryan’s statement is “mandate.” This word

implies broad support, and while around 60 million people voted for President-elect Trump, about 60 million also voted for Hillary Clinton. Exit polls found 60 percent of the voters, even as they handed Mr. Trump the victory, still considered him unqualified for office. This suggests Republicans won not a mandate, but merely a chance to show they can shift the focus of D.C. away from itself and toward the great struggling masses of Americans of all creeds, backgrounds, and colors — and pursue genuine solutions based on detailed policies — two things sadly missing all through this wretched campaign. And if they squander that chance, I suspect in a few very short years the cries of change that have now propelled two presidents to power will rise likes furies once again.
METRO.US THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2016
Anxious world leaders seek clarity on Trump policies Several authoritarian and right-wing leaders hailed the billionaire businessman and former TV show host, who won the leadership of the world’s most powerful country against the odds in Tuesday’s election. World leaders offered to work with Donald Trump when he takes over as U.S. president, but expressed anxiety over how he will handle problems from the Middle East to an assertive Russia and whether he will carry out a number of campaign threats. China, a target of Trump’s ire during his campaign, appealed for cooperation. Mexico also struck a conciliatory tone, despite Trump’s insults to Mexican migrants and pledges to build a wall to separate the two countries. South Korea urged him not to change policy on North Korea’s nuclear tests. Trump, who has no previous political or military experience, said after defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton that he would seek common ground, not conflict, with the United States’ allies. In the election campaign, he voiced admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioned central tenets of the NATO military alliance and suggested Japan and South Korea should develop nuclear weapons to shoulder their own defense burden. Putin was among the first to send Trump congratulations. Ties between Washington and Moscow have become strained over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and allegations of Russian cyberattacks featured in the election campaign.
“It is not an easy path, but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development,” said Putin, for whom an easing of U.S. economic sanctions would be a prize. Among other issues causing concern among allies are Trump’s vows to undo a global agreement on climate change, ditch trade deals he says have been bad for U.S. workers, and renegotiate the nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers which has led to an easing of sanctions on Iran. Iran urged Trump to stay committed to the Iran deal. President Hassan Rouhani said the nuclear accord with six world powers could not be dismissed by one government. German Chancellor Angela Merkel — denounced by Trump as “insane” for allowing more than one million migrants into the country last year — added a stern note in her message of congratulations which hinted at a certain unease. “Germany and America are bound together by values — democracy, freedom, respecting the rule of law, people’s dignity regardless of their origin, the color of their skin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views,” Merkel said. “On the basis of these values, I am offering to work closely with the future President of the United States Donald Trump.” In Britain, where Trump’s victory had echoes of June’s referendum in which voters showed dissatisfaction with the political establishment by voting to leave the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May said the “enduring and special relationship” between the two countries would remain intact. Trump due in court before Oval Office A hearing in federal court in San Diego is set for Thursday, and the trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 28, barring any delays or if Trump decides to settle the case. President-elect Donald Trump could face a federal jury in California, courtesy of a lawsuit by former students of his now-defunct Trump University who claim they were defrauded by a series of real-estate seminars. While presidents enjoy immunity from lawsuits arising from their official duties, the U.S. Supreme Court has held that this shield does not extend to acts alleged to have taken place prior to taking office. Lawyers said they could think of no similar situation like the one now involving Trump. “I’m certain there is
nothing comparable to this,” said Alan Dershowitz, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School. Lawyers for both Trump and the plaintiffs declined to comment Wednesday. Dershowitz said the Supreme Court also held that a case cannot be delayed just because the defendant is president, though judges are still free to grant reasonable delays to any party. Miami trial consultant Sandy Marks, who is not involved in the case, said he thought Trump might ask the presiding judge, Gonzalo Curiel, to postpone the trial in an effort to settle the case before taking office. “The judge would be foolhardy not to give him a short [delay],” said Marks, “which would give him a chance to resolve the case with all these people and put it behind him.” Trump repeatedly claimed on the campaign trail that he would win
the lawsuit, and he accused Curiel of being biased against him because of his campaign promise to build a wall along the border with Mexico. The judge was born in Indiana to Mexican parents. At the hearing Thursday, lawyers will argue pretrial motions, including one by Trump to block potential jurors from hearing comments made or publicized during the campaign, such as those about the judge. Lawyers for the students have argued the comments could help jurors assess Trump’s credibility as a witness. Claims against Trump over the seminars date to 2010, with two class actions filed in federal court in San Diego and another case brought by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on behalf of students who claim they were misled into paying as much as $35,000 each to learn worthless real estate investing “secrets” from instructors “hand-

picked” by Trump. Trump has admitted he did not hand-pick instructors, but has argued the claim was marketing language not meant to be taken literally. He claims most students were happy with their courses. If the trial goes forward, several legal experts said it would be hard to seat an impartial jury, because so many people already have strong opinions about the president-elect. Parties often hire spe-
cialized jury consultants to pick jurors, but New York lawyer Robert Anello said they were not infallible. “If experienced pollsters can’t get it right,” he said, “how can a jury consultant who is not spending as much time studying the demographics?” In an interview a day before the election, Jeffrey Goldman, a lawyer for Trump in the New York case, said the media’s “drumbeat of distortion” about Trump University would make it hard to
find impartial jurors. Several experts noted that jurors, who will answer a questionnaire in addition to being questioned by the lawyers and the judge, are generally taken at their word when they say they can be impartial. Boston jury consultant Edward Schwartz said he expects both sides to make an effort to vet jurors by their public social media postings. Dershowitz noted that San Diego, though located in deep-blue California, is not as politically monolithic as, say, San Francisco. It has an ethnically diverse population and also has a large military presence. REUTERS

Obama legacy imperiled as Donald Trump weighs Supreme Court pick Trump’s Supreme Court appointment, possibly the first of multiple picks, would allow him to restore the decades-long conservative majority on the bench, which looked under threat when Justice Antonin Scalia died in February. Republican Donald Trump’s presidential election victory all but dooms major Obama administration initiatives that are already tied up in legal challenges and gives him the chance to appoint a pivotal fifth conservative justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Democratic President Barack Obama’s signature
2010 health-care law, his plan to combat climate change, his executive action on immigration, his transgender-rights policy and other issues were challenged in court by Republicans and industry groups. A Trump administration could decide no longer to defend the policies in court after Trump takes office Jan. 20. In addition, Trump and the incoming Republican-led Congress could simply repeal or rescind Obama’s policies, as they have promised. Conservative activists may be emboldened to bring cases urging the court to support gun rights, uphold abortion restrictions and rule for religious rights. “If you have a conservative court, you are going to have more conservative decisions,” said Kerri Kupec, a lawyer with the Alli-

ance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal group involved in religious-rights cases. One issue the court could take up in the near term is whether business owners who oppose same-sex marriage can object on religious grounds to providing services to gay couples. One dispute concerns a
baker in Colorado, while another involves a florist in Washington state. In the labor context, the high court could also revisit whether states can force nonunion workers to pay unions for collective-bargaining activities. The court split 4-4 on the issue in March, just after Scalia’s death, in a loss for conservative groups challenging the practice. Liberal hopes of gaining a majority on the Supreme Court for the first time in decades lasted almost nine months, from Scalia’s death Feb. 13 to Tuesday night. In a vindication of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision, with little precedent in U.S. history, to take no action on Obama’s nominee to replace Scalia, appeals court judge Merrick Garland, Trump is now poised to nominate a new
justice as soon as he takes office. His nominee would be considered for confirmation by a Republicancontrolled Senate under McConnell. Trump may also be able to make further appointments to the court, with three justices 78 or older, including 83-yearold liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom Trump called on to resign in July after she called him a “faker” and speculated about the possibility of moving to New Zealand if he won the White House. Fellow liberal Stephen Breyer is 78, while conservative Anthony Kennedy is 80. If Trump is able to replace Ginsburg or another liberal justice during his presidency, the court’s conservative wing would be further strengthened. REUTERS

A divided America struggles to heal after ugly presidential election The 2016 election was unprecedented in the way it turned Americans against each other, according to dozens of interviews in rural United States and across some of the most politically charged battleground states. “He lies, huffed Janet Foster. “And he’s a dirty old man, chimed in her sister Jean as they discussed Donald Trump’s flaws a few days before he was elected the new president of the United States. “Well, I am with him, their brother Paul, 60, interjected, raising his voice over snacks of cheese, muffins and crackers in the family’s living room. “Hillary Clinton is like a
puppet — you know it’s all scripted. It divided families like the Fosters in rural Ellsworth, Maine, broke up friendships and turned neighbor against neighbor. In a recent Reuters/ Ipsos survey, 15 percent of respondents said they had stopped talking to a family member or close friend as a result of the election. For Democrats, this shoots up to 23 percent, compared to 10 percent for Republicans. And 12 percent had ended a relationship because of it. There was no comparative polling data from previous elections. But interviews with relationship counselors and voters suggest this election stood out by summoning passions, anger and a divisiveness in ways that will make healing difficult after Clinton’s loss to

AIG must defend Bill Cosby against defamation lawsuits U.S. District Judge Mark Mastroianni in Springfield, Massachusetts, left open the question of whether American International Group Inc. must indemnify Cosby for damages he may be required to pay the women. A federal judge said Bill Cosby’s homeowner’s insurance company must defend him against three civil defamation lawsuits in Massachusetts brought by several women who accused the once-beloved entertainer of sexual abuse. In a decision on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Mark Mastroianni in Springfield, Massachusetts, left open the ques-

tion of whether American International Group Inc. must indemnify Cosby for damages he may be required to pay the women. But the judge said Cosby’s alleged sexual misconduct was “too far removed” from his alleged defamation to free AIG from coverage under a policy it issued in Cali-
fornia, while the sexual misconduct exclusions in a Massachusetts policy were “ambiguous” at a minimum. “The court cannot say … that it was the intent of the parties to exclude the kinds of claims brought in the defamation cases,” Mastroianni wrote. “If Cosby’s interpretation is
reasonable, and thus the language is at least ambiguous under these circumstances, he prevails.” Mastroianni said the indemnification question “must await the completion of trial or settlement.” AIG had no immediate comment on Wednesday, and lawyers for the New York-based insurer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lawyers for Cosby did not immediately respond to similar requests. They have said AIG was required to cover Cosby’s defense costs against the women’s claims, even if those claims were groundless. Homeowner policies typically cover personal injuries, such as when a person falls down on an insured’s property, while “excess” policies such as Cosby’s carry enhanced protections.
AIG had sought declarations that Cosby’s policies excused it from defending and indemnifying him against personal injury claims “arising out of” sexual misconduct, as distinct from personal injury claims such as defamation. The women had alleged that Cosby harmed their reputations, including through his representatives, by calling them liars after they publicized their allegations. Last November, a federal judge in Los Angeles said AIG must defend Cosby against claims in a similar case by the actress and model Janice Dickinson because the sexual misconduct exclusions did not unambiguously bar coverage. Cosby, 79, must still defend himself in a Pennsylvania criminal case where he was charged with having in 2004 sexually assaulted a former basketball coach from his alma mater, Temple University. He has pleaded not guilty. More than 50 women have accused Cosby of having subjected them to unwanted sexual abuse in incidents dating to the 1960s. REUTERS
BRIEF Lawyer: Ex-Cincinnati cop ‘scared to death’ during shooting of black man A former University of Cincinnati police officer charged with murdering a black Ohio man during a traffic stop was acting in self-defense and is not a racist, his lawyer said. Body camera video of the July 2015 stop showed officer Ray Tensing, 26, who is white, shot Samuel DuBose, 43, in the head after pulling him over for a missing front license plate on his vehicle. The entire incident lasted a few minutes. The killing fueled demonstrations against use of lethal force by white officers against unarmed blacks and other minorities. “When they [police] are threatened, they have the right to protect themselves and that is what Ray Tensing was doing that day,” Tensing’s lawyer, Stew Mathews, said during closing arguments in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas in Cincinnati. “He [Tensing] was scared to death,” Mathews added. The jury headed into deliberations on Wednesday afternoon following closing arguments. Around a dozen protesters gathered outside the court calling for justice for DuBose. Prosecutors tried to bring race into the trial, Mathews said, by focusing on a shirt Tensing was wearing under his uniform, which featured a picture of the Confederate flag. But Mathews said on Wednesday his client was not a racist. Tensing said the shirt was a gift and the flag has no meaning to him. REUTERS

Long live Trump: Philippines’ Duterte says he wants no more quarrels with US Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated Donald Trump on his election win and said on Wednesday he now wished to stop quarrelling with ally the United States, recalling his anger at the Obama administration for criticizing him. The maverick leader, dubbed “Trump of the East” for his unrestrained rants and occasional lewd remarks, has repeatedly hit out at Washington in recent months, threatening to cut defense pacts and end military joint drills. “I would like to congratulate Mr. Donald Trump. Long live,” Duterte said in a speech to the Filipino community during a visit to Malaysia. “We are both making curses. Even with trivial matters we curse.

I was supposed to stop because Trump is there. I don’t want to quarrel anymore, because Trump has won.” Duterte won a May election by a huge margin and is often compared to Trump, having himself been the alternative candidate from outside of national politics. He campaigned on
a populist, anti-establishment platform and struck a chord among ordinary Filipinos with his promises to fix what he called a broken country. But the biggest surprise of Duterte’s presidency so far has been his hostility towards the United States, shown during near-daily eruptions of anger over its concerns about human rights abuses during his deadly war on drugs. He has also threatened repeatedly to severe a military relationship that has been a key element of Washington’s “pivot” to Asia. Duterte on Wednesday told Filipinos how angry he had been at Washington, saying it had threatened to cut off aid and had treated the Philippines like a dog tied to a post. REUTERS

Kelly Ripa opens up about bad Botox experience It’s not often that celebrities own up to getting “work done” in order to enhance their appearance, beyond
good make-up and hair styles. But in an industry that relies so heavily on looks, many of our favorite celebrities are going under the knife and the needle in order to look their best. On Wednesday’s episode of her show “Live With Kelly,” Kelly Ripa opened up about an experience with Botox that didn’t work out so well. According to People, while co-hosting with Fox political commentator Megyn Kelly following the election, Ripa
shared: “I got bad Botox about … what was it, a year ago? And it was bad. It did something to my good side, so then I had two bad sides. I’m not kidding!” The host was adamant about not going into further details, but we give the 46-yearold props for being honest about the procedure.

Many Americans were shocked and upset by Tuesday’s election results. Lady Gaga was among them. In fact, if we had to guess, it appears that as of Wednesday morning, Lady Gaga was firmly in the denial and anger stages of grief after Hillary Clinton’s stunning loss against Donald Trump for the presidency. E! News showed the 30-year-old singer and actress posted outside the Trump
Hotel in New York City on Wednesday morning holding a up a sign that read “Love trumps hate.” An American flag hung from her pocket as she hoisted the sign above her head. Lady Gaga campaigned for Hillary Clinton earlier in the week, performing at a Raleigh, N.C. rally with Jon Bon Jovi on Monday. And in case you were wondering, yes, she kept a strong poker face.

Paul Reiser likes playing the jerk The king of the country club gets a reality check in “Red Oaks” Season 2 KATE MOONEY @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
For Paul Reiser, “Red Oaks” isn’t an ’80s nostalgia fest. The 59-year-old actor—who was just cast in Season 2 of another throwback ’80s show, the cult hit “Stranger Things”— says Amazon’s coming-of-age comedy series is more about “people in this lovely little world who are finding themselves.” That it takes place in the ’80s is incidental. Reiser plays Getty, the president of the Red Oaks
country club and king of said lovely little world (although in Season 2, out Friday, that’s all about to change). He’s a Wall Street guy with a gruff demeanor and sense of entitlement — yet, a likable jackass. “It’s very fun to play that, because a lot of the nastiest stuff is said with an absolute smile so you’re actually meant to think, ‘Is he kidding?’” he says. Let’s talk about Getty. He’s a jerk, but it might be surface-level. There’s certainly a pompousness and an egotistical side to him. Some of it is earned — he’s made a success for himself — even in Season 1 you see, he starts to relate to David

out. The audiences have so many choices now, it’s like tapas restaurants: we’re still leaving full, but we’re just having a little bit of that, a little bit of that. What associations do you have with the ’80s? I’m looking forward to my 80s [laughs]. I think often, with a little distance, people write about their prime, or pivotal years. The very first movie I ever did was “Diner,” which was Barry Levinson in the ’80s writing about the late’50s. [“Red Oaks”] is [creator] Greg Jacobs remembering his world in the ’80s.
It’s nice, [with “Red Oaks”], they’re not shoving it down your throat. There’s a great soundtrack, a reference here or there, “Oh, ‘Top Gun’ just came out.” They’re also not making fun of it, “Look at our stupid haircuts and outfits.” Any country club experience in your past? None. I grew up in the city, we didn’t have country clubs. [At] summer camp we’d meet these suburban kids. I’d go, “You guys have a lawn?” So, a country club was that to the 10th power. “What, you go and you pay to sit under a tree?”
Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

When I woke up Tuesday morning, I thought I’d be writing a very different article. I watched the polls almost obsessively. I spent time in a voting line with parents proud to bring their children to vote for the first “girl president. Forget politics. I’ve never been terrified for myself and my friends when a Republican won in the past, despite my disagreement with their politics. I’ve never seen posts like these on Facebook: My LGBTQ friends posting about losing their right to be married and fearing for themselves and their children. My female friends posting links to self-defense classes. Fellow sex-
gin to fight back. And yet, fight back we must. I, like many of you, am trying very hard not to give in to despair, and I promise I won’t. I won’t let this destroy the fight in me. I’ll fight for health care, for the rights of people of color, for the LGBTQ community. I’ll fight for women, like I always have, despite the fact that what I write about just got exponentially more dangerous. I don’t want my niece, my nephew and my friends’ children to grow up in a country where someone is rewarded for being a racist, homophobic, misogynist maniac who can’t even handle a Twitter account. I will write, I will continue to vote in every single election, I will protest and I will speak out. And through all of that, I will hope that someday this nightmare will be over.

New Male Potency Formula Makes “The Little Blue Pill” Obsolete Soaring demand expected for new scientific advance made just for older men. Works on both men’s physical ability and their desire in bed. By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate
WORKS ON YOUR HEAD AND YOUR BODY
New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50; you probably already know the truth… Prescription ED pills don’t work! Simply getting an erection doesn’t fix the problem” says Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories. As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with prescription pills. Besides, they’re expensive… costing as much as $50.00 each Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take, if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.
MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you get an erection by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different

In a 16-week clinical study; scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals. The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference.

Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike the expensive prescriptions, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well. Actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.

Playing a quiet revolutionary In “Loving,” Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga play Richard and Mildred Loving. The names might not sound instantly familiar, but they should be: They were the mixedrace couple who fought anti-miscegenation laws all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in the 1967 decision that deemed laws prohibiting interracial marriage unconstitutional. Thing is, the Lovings were just ordinary folks, who hated the spotlight. The film respects that, creating an intimate drama that treats them as people. We talk to Edgerton about this vital film. This story is still relatively obscure to Americans. I was surprised I didn’t know the story. But I was more surprised that more Americans didn’t know the story, unless you studied law or have a similar situation in your own family. A lot of people have come up to us and

As much as we look up to the Martin Luther King Jrs. of the world, I think we look up at them and think, “Wow, I’m not made of that stuff. I’m glad you’re alive and I’m glad you’re speaking on my behalf.” With Richard and Mildred, perhaps we can identify with them more. We look at them and think, “I could be you.” MATT PRIGGE

You can barely fit the Rolling Stones into a 60,000seat arena, but a new show is packing 50 years of the band’s history into an event space in the West Village. Opening Nov. 12, the appropriately titled “Exhibitionism” at Industria takes a deep dive into all things Stones, from
A glimpse of the exhibition. PROVIDED

a re-creation of the first apartment they lived and recorded in to their most spectacular outfits and outlandish performances. Spending more
than 50 years together generates a lot of swag, and “Exhibitionism” features more than 500 pieces of it, much of it from the guys’ own closets — clothes worn onstage and off, handwritten diaries and lyrics, rare photos and more — as well as an interactive recording studio and a “backstage-to-onstage 3D concert experience.” Curating the show fell to Ileen Gallagher, who has a unique qualification for the job. “I was a child of the ’60s and growing up. It was always the Beatles vs. the Stones, and I was always a Stones girl,” she says. To that end, she knows the Stones are the best people to tell their own story. “I tried to make it as first-person as possible, so the band is really taking you through the exhibit,” Gallagher says, with about 90 percent of the words and videos in the exhibit coming straight from the band. Rather than a chronology of the group —

who formed in 1962 and are still together — “we wanted it to be a celebration of their career and their music.” Among the can’t-miss items are icons like the Omega shirt Mick Jagger wore at Altamont, the infamous concert chronicled in the documentary “Gimme Shelter,” but also apocryphal discoveries made in Gallagher’s two years of putting together the show, including a toy drum kit drummer Charlie Watts found in an antique shop. “He ended up using that on the recording of ‘Street Fighting Man,’” Gallagher says. There’s a lot of, pardon the pun, oral history, too. Though Mick and Keith had known each other in childhood, they didn’t connect musically until meeting up again on a train platform. “They were carrying blues records, and they were astonished they had this in common in a small town in England,” says Gallagher. “The Stones were kind
of the messiahs of blues music. They started out, really, as a blues cover band, playing music by Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed.” It definitely wasn’t mainstream music, even in America, and bringing it — and black artists — to the stage did a lot to popularize the genre and its original performers. One of the first galleries in “Exhibitionism” features a video of Jagger and Richards talking with Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy, who played with the band in America, about the blues influences in their music. As the “little raunchier, little sexier, little dirtier” rivals of the clean-cut Beatles, as Gallagher describes them, the Stones had something figured out when musicians still stuck to suits and ties. “Mick was one of the first artists to understand that it wasn’t just about the music, it was the way you looked, what you wore, your persona and how you
put yourself out there,” says Gallagher. The band’s collaborations with artists spanning the worlds of fashion, film, art and beyond began early, too. They sought out the biggest artists of their day, like Andy Warhol and Martin Scorsese. But they also challenged many of them to go outside their usual medium, like asking photographer Robert Frank to create what would become the first and most iconic backstage concert film, “C—sucker Blues” and Jeff Koons to design a stage backdrop. “Every area of culture they touched on, they collaborated with artists of the zeitgeist that really netted these amazing pieces,” says Gallagher. Maybe those collaborations are why the Stones endure — they’re on tour now, with no murmurs of farewells. “They managed to stay culturally current for over 50 years,” Gallagher says. “A lot of groups that have been around for that long are almost cover bands of themselves; not the Stones. They’ve always been on the cutting edge of culture. They’re so much more than their music.” The Rolling Stones’ “Exhibitionism” opens Nov. 12 and runs through March 12, 2017, at Industria at 775 Washington St. For ticket and time information go to stonesexhibitionism.com.

It started with the rooftop cocktail bar Westlight, then the burger-slinging Airstream trailer on the terrace, and now we have the opening of coastal Italian spot Leuca with a menu by executive chef Anthony Ricco. For this first gig with Carmellini’s NoHo Hospitality group, Ricco was drawn by the promise of a wood-burning oven and an easygoing vibe. “I was a fan of Locanda Verde and his other restaurants, so I knew the quality that would be involved,” he says. “The whole project’s been about having fun.”
Ricco spent 11 years at the Meatpacking Asian cuisine funhouse that was Spice Market (RIP) before arriving at Leuca. We asked where he likes to go for having his own good times.

Here’s a crazy, perhaps insane-sounding, idea: “Showgirls” isn’t bad. It isn’t even so-bad-it’sgood. It’s a masterpiece. It knows exactly what it is, and what it is is a funhouse mirror of American excess — trash so trashy it quickly becomes hilarious. But you don’t laugh at it; you laugh with it. This line on “Showgirls” makes a lot more sense if watched alongside other films by the same director, Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven. Arriving on the heels of “Elle” — his first feature in a decade, a rape drama starring Isabelle Huppert — Lincoln Center’s complete retro lets you see that he’s always known what he’s doing: showing the world as the hilariously ugly place it’s been for far too long. Verhoeven is best known for his Hollywood run starting with “RoboCop,” when he fed Americans a fatty diet of action movies and erotic

thrillers, teeming with guns and explosions and boobs. But they were all laced with acid, pretending to give us what we want while taking us to task. “Starship Troopers” is a $100 million popcorn flick where we root for fascists. It’s best to interpret Sharon Stone as the hero of “Basic Instinct”: Watch as a slinky bisexual, the smartest person in any room, lays waste to a legion of stupid, horndog, old-school man’s men.
Of course, Verhoeven was just continuing what he did back in his native Holland. Catch up with early, out-there classics like the sextastic “Turkish Delight,” the renegade period piece “Katie Tippel” and the “Basic Instinct”y “The Fourth Man,” and you see someone who uses vulgarity to challenge social mores. After seeing those, the notion that “Showgirls” is stupid is, well, just stupid. MATT PRIGGE

Riviera Maya Spring break in Mexico is basically a birthright for Americans. College kids flock to Cancun, but the scene in the rest of the Riviera Maya is every bit as wild but geared for the non-keg-standing crowd. Everyone deserves to experience a beach trip to Mexico at least once without kids, and hotels like the Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla make it easy by weeding out both the spring-breakers and the diaper-bag crowd with their adults-only concepts.
African Safari Kids love animals, but the massive critters you’ll encounter on the savanna aren’t of the petting-zoo variety. Many safaris require guests to sign waivers warning about the risks of communing

For as long as I can remember, referees have been under scrutiny by players, coaches and fans across the sports spectrum. Whether it be a peewee hockey game or a professional tennis match, somebody always seems to be upset with the officials. To the fans, coaches and players, officials are held to the highest of standards and are expected to be flawless. There is no exception, and when referees happen to have a hiccup, the weight of the world is brought upon their shoulders. Imagine if that type of pressure was put on you everyday? It would drive me

up a wall. I have come a long way, but I can admit that I am not perfect. Professional players and coaches are paid millions of dollars, but the officials are paid a mere fraction of that money. NFL officials, for example, are part-time workers. Most NFL officials have to work other jobs during the week to support themselves and their families. How can we hold these officials to such a high standard

I think everyone needs to put themselves in the official’s shoes and see it from their perspective.  We expect officials and refs to have their heads on a swivel, to not blink and see every player from every angle on every play. For professional officials, they are trying to keep up with the speed and

Yet we expect them to not only run up and down the field with guys like Adrian Peterson and Rob Gronkowski, but to also position themselves to make the correct call. Jets with no clue on how to fix Fitzpatrick Todd Bowles is sticking with the veteran QB. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
Jets’ head coach Todd Bowles is loyal, if nothing else, but even he must start to believe that it’s time for Gang Green to pull the plug on the Ryan Fitzpatrick free-fall ride. Sunday’s defeat in Miami wasn’t ultimately Fitzpatrick’ fault — safety Antonio Allen’s offsides call that gave the Dolphins new life to subsequently return the re-do kickoff 96 yards for the game-winning score was the real stake through the heart. But the veteran quarterback didn’t do his team any favors with his lackluster performance. His 17-of-28, 193 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions afternoon wasn’t an abject failure, but he once again
totaled more turnovers than touchdowns, and leads the league with 13 interceptions. Fitzpatrick hurt his left knee late in the third quarter and was replaced by second-year pro Bryce Petty, who only played four snaps and went 2-of-2 for 19 yards. The Jets sent Fitzpatrick to get an MRI today, and the result was a mildlysprained medial collateral ligament. Fitzpatrick’s status is unknown right now, but judging by Bowles’s postgame words, if his veteran is cleared to play — even limited — he will remain the starter. A 3-6 record, bushel of interceptions, and red-zone inefficiencies should tell the coach otherwise. No one knows how to fix Fitzpatrick. And even the quarterback himself is puzzled by his sudden drop in performance, noting he’s not sure if it’s “mechanics … or mental, or the [quarterback’s] thought process.” Bowles noted that
The Jets are going nowhere with Ryan Fitzpatrick still at QB. GETTY IMAGES
even after examining the film, he does not envision a scenario in which he might re-evaluate the starting quarterback job. Perhaps a bleaker MRI result would’ve changed things. But as of today, Fitzpatrick will get the call against the Rams. That may not be the wisest of moves, however, considering how rudely the Rams’ ferocious defensive front just treated
reigning league MVP Cam Newton, yesterday. The Panthers came out on top, but the Rams’ defense got its pound of flesh from Newton, who was sacked five times and held to just 16 yards rushing. If one of the game’s most mobile and athletic quarterbacks can be reduced to that, imagine the harm’s way Bowles would be putting the sitting duck Fitzpatrick in,
next Sunday, when the Rams come to town. Los Angeles’ defense is far stauncher than Miami’s and that Dolphins attack made the Jets look rather ordinary. New York started that game 0-of-4 in the red zone before scoring a late touchdown. Fitzpatrick is tops in the league in redzone interceptions with five. And the signal caller has been so inept in that
department, that Gang Green leads the league in stalled red-zone drives with seven field goal attempts from inside the 6-yard line. That’s unacceptable for an offense that also features Marshall and running backs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell. Something needs to be done, but it looks like switching signal callers won’t be on the docket. But Bowles shouldn’t be so beholden to his journeyman quarterback, because it might be wise to give his banged-up passer a week’s reprieve, given the insatiable nature of the Rams’ pass rush. Besides, Petty is likely going to see the field at some point this season, especially as the losses continue to mount and the season gets to its bleakest point. Simply put, New York isn’t going anywhere and the Jets need to finally start to evaluate their young signal callers.

Justin Tuck sees a similarity between this New York Giants team and the two squads he was a part of in recent years that won Super Bowl titles. After some ups and downs this season, the Giants have straightened things out a bit at 5-3, coming off a tight divisional win this past Sunday over the Philadelphia Eagles. The recent threegame winning streak comes after a stretch where the Giants lost three in a row and looked like a team that was headed in the wrong direction
Justin Tuck thinks the 2016 Giants could make a deep run. GETTY IMAGES
and potentially out of the playoffs. So much for that $200 million offseason spending spree — or so it seemed at the time. Instead of folding, however, the Giants have reeled off three hard-fought wins to right the ship. Tuck, who won the Super Bowl with the Giants in 2007 and again in 2011, thinks that the spine and determination of this Giants team has them head-
ed in the right direction. Those Giants teams weren’t dominant by any stretch but often found the will to win and, very often, did so late in games. Tuck spoke to the media on Tuesday in a conference call to discuss his Ring of Honor induction this upcoming Monday night. “They’re winning football games. They’re finding out ways to win in
the fourth quarter. That’s been the Achilles’ heel the last few seasons. I think it reminds me a lot of some of my Super Bowl years. We weren’t winning games in a great fashion, but for the majority of the year we were winning football games, Tuck said. “You find out a lot about your team. A lot of character stuff comes with that. I think that bodes well when you come to playoff time. I’m excited about that fact. I think there’s still things that they need work on. I think they’ll continue to improve. I’m excited for this run here. They’re 5-3 heading to the midway point in a league and a division where anything can happen. Everything is still up for grabs. I always say to myself that when you have a veteran quarterback like Eli that’s been there, done that, you always have a chance. I’m excited for this second half of the season.

Aries The personal changes you make will heighten your reputation and bring you the attention required to help you advance. Don’t let outside pressure stand in your way.
Libra Good fortune is heading in your direction if you are willing to make the appropriate changes to your lifestyle and relationships. Stand tall and be firm.
Taurus If you share your feelings, you will come up with solutions to any dilemma. Partnerships look promising and will encourage you to expand your interests.
Scorpio Make your home base your comfort zone. Express your feelings and share your long-term goals with the person or people you care about most.
Gemini Get involved in projects, activities or pursuits that are physically engaging. Strenuous activity will help you feel better and could lead to further success.
Sagittarius Mull over all the facts and consider the changes that make the most sense. Clearing emotional debris will encourage you to move forward without despair.
Cancer You can get ahead if you network or discuss your options with a headhunter or someone you’ve enjoyed working with in the past. Learn as you go.
Capricorn How you earn your living should be based on what you enjoy doing. Don’t fall short just because you are afraid to make your dreams come true.
Leo Get involved in projects you believe in. The people you meet and the contribution you make will help you make decisions that will change your life.
Aquarius Don’t give in to emotional manipulation or let anger lead to unfortunate mistakes. If you go high when others go low, you will find the strength to move forward.
Virgo Don’t give in to someone trying to control your affairs. An emotional outburst will be hard to avoid. Make your motives and decisions crystal clear.
Pisces Be creative when handling legal, contractual or money matters. A health issue due to stress will arise if you aren’t willing to do what needs to be done. EUGENIA LAST
