3 things you need to know AT UNDER $5 EACH, TRUMP’S VOTES CAME CHEAP

Donald Trump pulled off one of the biggest upsets in American political history when he toppled Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential election Tuesday — and he did it using far less cash than his rival. Relying heavily on an unorthodox mix of social media, unfiltered rhetoric and a knack for winning free TV time, the New York real estate businessman likely paid less than $5 per vote during his insurgent White House bid, about half what Clinton paid, according to a Reuters analysis of campaign finance records and voting data. Those figures assume the candidates spent all the funds they raised. Trump’s cost-effective win has upended prevailing concepts about the influence of money in American politics and raised the question of whether a lean, media-savvy campaign can become the new model for winning office in the United States. GM TO LAY OFF 2,000 WORKERS AT TWO US PLANTS

General Motors Co. plans to lay off 2,000 employees at two U.S. auto plants in early 2017, the automaker said Wednesday. GM said it will furlough the employees when it cuts the third shift at its Lordstown, Ohio, and Lansing, Michigan, plants in midJanuary. The Lordstown plant builds the compact Chevrolet Cruze, whose U.S. sales through October were down 20 percent. The Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS, whose sales were down 17 percent through October. GM also said it will invest $211 million at the Lansing plant for an unspecified “new-product program.” The company also will invest $668 million in its Toledo transmission plant for a new generation of transmissions. SODA TAXES SPREAD AFTER VOTES IN FOUR US CITIES
3
Three California cities voted for a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages and another in Colorado was likely to follow suit, unofficial election results showed Wednesday, as local governments’ push to cut soda consumption to stem obesity gathered speed. The votes on so-called soda taxes in San Francisco, Albany and Oakland in California and in Boulder, Colorado, came a month after the World Health Organization recommended governments impose such taxes to battle obesity, diabetes and other diet-related diseases. Tax proponents have recorded a series of victories in the United States this year, after numerous failed attempts. Opponents argue that the taxes hit lower-income populations hardest, and that it is unfair to single out soda in the battle to fight obesity and diabetes. REUTERS

Pennsylvania Democrats never saw it coming In the Keystone state, Democratic overconfidence and the silent majority helped hand Trump the White House. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
On Election Day, an infectious optimism was in the air in predominantly Democratic Philadelphia. From lifelong residents to first-time voters, every Democrat seemed confident Hillary Clinton would win. One was not. When Former Gov. Ed Rendell showed up at the polls to hand Temple students soft pretzels and water, he appeared uncharacteristically anxious. “Around the state they are having just as heavy turnout as we are, so we can’t leave,” Rendell told students in line. “I fear this is going to be a one-point, two-point night, so everybody has to hang in there.” Asked who would win, he quietly responded in his gravelly voice: “I hope Hillary. I never predict elections.” It turns out Rendell’s

fears were well founded. About 70,000 votes made the difference to give Trump the state. He pulled 49 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 48 percent. Pennsylvania hasn’t given its 20 electoral votes to a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. And everywhere in Philadelphia Wednesday, scores of people looked miserable. Contractor Michael Laurence, 62, an exMarine and cancer survivor, was not among them. He’s been holding up his pro-Trump signs at events around the city, includ-
ing outside Clinton’s final campaign event, a concert at Independence Mall on Monday. “I stayed up all night. I cried when it was over,” he said Wednesday. “At one point, I didn’t care if he won, I just cared that he won Pennsylvania.” This weekend, he’s holding a celebratory barbecue. “I knew there was a silent majority,” he said. “He pulled the people out of the swamps, the Tennessee mountains, the coal mines. … I grew up in this city, and I’ve seen too much of the Democratic
‘pay-for-play.’ We might actually have a chance to break free from all that.” “The guys that work with me, they’re struggling. They all won,” he continued. “America picked the winner.” Just a few months ago, Clinton campaign staffers were extremely confident they could take Pennsylvania. Post-convention polls gave Clinton a 10-point lead over Trump, and the campaign boasted that their ground game far exceeded Trump’s, with far more volunteers and campaign offices. But while Trump didn’t have as many campaign offices, his signs were in yards through Bucks and Delaware counties. He dominated the vote in counties between Philly and Pittsburgh. Just what went wrong in Pennsylvania may never be entirely clear. But it was at the DNC in Philadelphia that Bernie Sanders supporters put up their last stand, many of them predicting Trump would beat Clinton. Indeed, Quinnipiac polls showed Sanders performing significantly better against Trump in Pennsylvania. An expanded version of this story can be seen at metro.us
Dismayed Philly pols react to Trump’s victory The mood was dark in City Hall as Mayor Jim Kenney held a news conference with members of City Council to address Donald Trump’s election as president. “Even with the unknown that’s coming, we will be stronger and a better city if we love each other,” he said. “Don’t let yesterday or today or the next couple days drag you down. Let’s lift ourselves up, dust ourselves off and move forward.” Kenney congratulated Trump on the win, as well as Republican incumbent Sen. Pat Toomey, who won a tight race against Democrat Kate McGinty. But he was clearly also seeking to address the deep shock and sorrow felt by many Philadelphians who voted Tues-

day for Hillary Clinton while her victory was still considered a possibility. “I know it’s very upsetting. I can see on your faces … the concern, upset sadness and sorrow,” Kenney said to the audience, mostly made up of various City Hall staffers. “Take your time to mourn, take your time
to heal, and let’s get back to work.” City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell said she felt that this election has now sparked a “grieving process.” “We’ve lived before through especially hard times, if you’ve been around a while and we all survived that,” she said.
“We still have Barack and Michelle Obama to remember, and as we think of good things and good times, we come together to support one another.” While Trump’s campaign was heavily criticized as being racially divisive, Blackwell said she hopes his acceptance speech points toward a different president Trump than the candidate on the campaign trial. “He said he wants to represent the whole country, and let’s hope he’s committed to that,” she said. “He was positive, he was nice, he was inclusive. It was only a few sentences in his acceptance speech, but being our president, let’s hope he puts all the negative stuff [away].” SAM NEWHOUSE

If one man is to speak for Americans suffering post-election pain, that man might be Louis Tafuto from Warwick, New York, who filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Donald Trump for pain and suffering and civil rights violations. “Trump has strategically and continuously used false statements and assertions to mislead and coerce the under-educated to vote for him, support him, and act unlawfully on his behalf,” Tafuto states in the lawsuit, which was filed on the eve of the election. He is one of millions of Americans who are grasping for ways to cope with the bitter disappointment of the outcome, experts said. On Wednesday, clinical psychologist and Stanford professor Dr. Thomas Plante’s inbox was flooded with clients, friends and colleagues seeking his advice and solace. “It’s that kind of devastation, panic, despondency, feeling broadsid-
ed that’s driving people right now,” Plante told Metro. “People Trump insulted — people of color, transgender, gay — are quite scared about how their lives will go now.” Some officials are taking immediate action to curb the emotional and behavioral damage that might result, such as Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang, who announced Wednesday that counseling resources will be offered to students, their families and staff who are affected by the presidential election. “As educators, we should use this opportunity as a teachable moment to have conversations with our students about the democratic process, how we can resolve differences and conflicts, and how we can address diverse and sometimes conflicting ideology,” Chang wrote. Plante pointed out that many people who flocked to Trump saw him as a savior. The people of poorer, rural America “saw the world as they knew it disintegrate. Saw factories close, saw their lower-level education not buy what it used to, saw more people of color come into the U.S. and see their jobs disappear. They see people doing

BRIEF Toomey defeats McGinty to win second term in US Senate Incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania narrowly defeated Democratic contender Katie McGinty in the early morning hours Wednesday, CNN reported. He won by just under 100,000 votes with an estimated 97 percent of precincts reporting as of 3 a.m. The race may have been the undercard in the battle to win Pennsylvania between
presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, but it was also the most expensive and deeply fought Senate races in history, with more than $162 million going to get-out-thevote efforts and ceaseless television advertising. At stake was not only who will represent the Keystone State in the Senate, but control of the Senate itself, with a number of Republican incumbents, like Toomey, in
very tough races. In the end, the Republicans took the Senate 51-47. For her part McGinty, who was once head of the state’s environmental protection agency and has never held public office, tried to tie Trump and his controversial bid for the White House like an anchor around Toomey’s neck. Toomey, who won his Senate seat in 2010, shot back with ads throwing shade at McGinty
for awarding environmental agency grants to organizations her husband had served as a consultant. But as an indication at how carefully Toomey tried to distance himself from Trump while not alienating the businessman’s passionate Republican supporters, Toomey didn’t announce that he had chosen to vote for Trump until just an hour before polls closed. better and feel more marginalized, with little hope of a better life,” Plante explained. “They too want a better world and goodness and fairness,” he said. “One way to cope is to recognize that we all essentially want the same thing, and that for the most part people are good.” This might be an impetus for people to actually come together. One New York woman found a surprising effect in her online dating accounts: In one day she received three messages from men proposing marriage and referring to the election. She said the situation reminded her of the aftermath of 9/11 when New Yorkers perceptions of the world and sense of security were shattered. “The day after 9/11 people needed to connect. Anytime you go through a big life event and you’re single, it’s more painful,” said Anne, 50, who asked that her last name not be used. “I think when something unusual and horrifying happens like this it reminds them that they are single and alone and that they don’t have anyone to turn to and confide in.” Plante also likened
this election outcome to 9/11. “Maybe this is the worst thing that happened since 9/11, but New York rallied and didn’t roll up and die. We can pull a page from that playbook and say let’s do that again, we are going to be who we want to be not because of Washington but in spite of it.” Dr. Nuar Alsadir, a psychoanalyst and author, agreed with those who draw parallels to the terrorist attacks. “If I had to say a dominant reaction is shock, people are experiencing it as a catastrophe, one person likened it to how she felt after 9/11, fear dread,” she said. “I would say really, other people have likened it to a death. A death of the country as we know it, all that we achieved and what we worked for.” Alsadir said she is particularly concerned about the election’s impact on children. “The children are more shocked in some ways than adults,” she said. “I think kids in the pre-teen to teenage years are super-traumatized and feel let down ... and we unleashed this terrible world on them and didn’t protect them from what might come.”

BRIEFS ‘Not my president’: Philly protesters express rage with Trump The night after Donald Trump was elected president, several hundred protesters gathered outside City Hall to declare their outrage. Confrontational picket signs carried by the protesters included messages such as, “Not my president,” “F— this!” and “Donald Trump is a b—!”
The protest was organized by Philadelphia Socialist Alternative, 15 Now Philadelphia, 15 Now Temple University and Movement for the 99 percent. Similar anti-Trump rallies took place in major cities around the nation. Organizers called for the creation of a new political party focused on the interests of the working class. “The Democratic Party has
failed us,” community activist Sarah Giskin said in a news release. “We the 99% must come together to start a new political party to stop billionaires like Donald Trump and the policies destroying our communities.” Organizers said Trump’s campaign was based on “racism, xenophobia, sexism, and anti-LGBTQ sentiments.” Meanwhile, they called Clinton a “Wall Street, Wal-Mart,
warmonger candidate,” and called for “working-class politics” to “truly make America great.” “It’s obvious that the neoliberal Democrats have failed to defend people of color, women, LGBTQ communities, the poor and working class,” organizer Kate Goodman said in a news release. “Democrats don’t or won’t fight for what matters.” SAM NEWHOUSE

Donald Trump stunned much of the nation with his victory, and readers who participated in Metro’s latest unscientific poll seemed to reflect that reaction and many added they would consider emigrating to another country as a result. We asked readers this question before the voting began on Election Day: “Regardless of whom you voted for, who do you think will win the election?” Of the 206 readers who responded, 132 answered that they felt Hillary Clinton would prevail. In a related, tonguein-cheek question, Metro asked, “If your preferred candidate does not win the election, do you plan to leave the country? The idea of becoming expats apparently appealed to 76 of the 181 respondents, or 42 percent. The thought must have occurred to many Americans, because Canada’s immigration website crashed on election night. Several U.S. celebrities had said they would
move out of the country if Trump won the election. Among them were Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and the singers Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus and Cher. We’re not sure any of them responded to Metro’s online poll. Our third election-eve online poll question focused on the election process itself. Trump won the presidency by capturing 279 electoral votes. As everyone was reminded incessantly during televised coverage of the election, 270 electoral votes are needed to win the election. As Democrats were quick to point out Wednesday morning, more people from coast to coast voted for Hillary Clinton. She received nearly 59.6 million votes, nearly 234,000 more than Trump. So based on the popular vote, Clinton should be president. But that’s not how it works. Determining the winner of presidential elections on the basis of the Electoral College has long been a topic of debate. So we asked readers to weigh in. Of the 179 readers who responded, 134 said that the popular vote should determine the outcome. Forty-five, roughly 25 percent, suggested we keep things as they are.

Anxious world leaders seek clarity on Trump policies Several authoritarian and right-wing leaders hailed the billionaire businessman and former TV show host, who won the leadership of the world’s most powerful country against the odds in Tuesday’s election. World leaders offered to work with Donald Trump when he takes over as U.S. president, but expressed anxiety over how he will handle problems from the Middle East to an assertive Russia and whether he will carry out a number of campaign threats. China, a target of Trump’s ire during his campaign, appealed for cooperation. Mexico also struck a conciliatory tone, despite Trump’s insults to Mexican migrants and pledges to build a wall to separate the two countries. South Korea urged him not to change policy on North Korea’s nuclear tests. Trump, who has no previous political or military experience, said after defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton that he would seek common ground, not conflict, with the United States’ allies. In the election campaign, he voiced admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioned central tenets of the NATO military alliance and suggested Japan and South Korea should develop nuclear weapons to shoulder their own defense burden. Putin was among the first to send Trump congratulations. Ties between Washington and Moscow have become strained over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and allegations of Russian cyberattacks featured in the election campaign.
“It is not an easy path, but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development, said Putin, for whom an easing of U.S. economic sanctions would be a prize. Among other issues causing concern among allies are Trump’s vows to undo a global agreement on climate change, ditch trade deals he says have been bad for U.S. workers, and renegotiate the nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers which has led to an easing of sanctions on Iran. Iran urged Trump to stay committed to the Iran deal. President Hassan Rouhani said the nuclear accord with six world powers could not be dismissed by one government. German Chancellor Angela Merkel — denounced by Trump as “insane for allowing more than one million migrants into the country last year — added a stern note in her message of congratulations which hinted at a certain unease. “Germany and America are bound together by values — democracy, freedom, respecting the rule of law, people’s dignity regardless of their origin, the color of their skin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views, Merkel said. “On the basis of these values, I am offering to work closely with the future President of the United States Donald Trump. In Britain, where Trump’s victory had echoes of June’s referendum in which voters showed dissatisfaction with the political establishment by voting to leave the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May said the “enduring and special relationship between the two countries would remain intact. A hearing in federal court in San Diego is set for Thursday, and the trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 28, barring any delays or if Trump decides to settle the case. President-elect Donald Trump could face a federal jury in California, courtesy of a lawsuit by former students of his now-defunct Trump University who claim they were defrauded by a series of real-estate seminars. While presidents enjoy immunity from lawsuits arising from their official duties, the U.S. Supreme Court has held that this shield does not extend to acts alleged to have taken place prior to taking office. Lawyers said they could think of no similar situation like the one now involving Trump. “I’m certain there is nothing comparable to this,” said Alan Dershowitz, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School. Lawyers for both Trump and the plaintiffs declined to comment Wednesday. Dershowitz said the Supreme Court also held that a case cannot be delayed just because the defendant is president, though judges are still free to grant reasonable delays to any party. Miami trial consultant Sandy Marks, who is not involved in the case, said he thought Trump might ask the presiding judge, Gonzalo Curiel, to post-
VE O L
pone the trial in an effort to settle the case before taking office. “The judge would be foolhardy not to give him a short [delay],” said Marks, “which would give him a chance to resolve the case with all these people and put it behind him.” Trump repeatedly claimed on the campaign trail that he would win the lawsuit, and he accused Curiel of being biased against him because of his campaign promise to build a wall along the border with Mexico. The judge was born in Indiana to Mexican parents. At the hearing Thursday, lawyers will argue pretrial motions, including one by Trump to block potential jurors from hearing comments made or publicized during the campaign, such as those about the judge. Lawyers for the students have argued the comments could help jurors assess Trump’s credibility as a witness. Claims against Trump over the seminars date to 2010, with two class actions filed in federal court in San Diego and another case brought by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on behalf of students who claim they were misled into paying as much as $35,000 each to learn worthless real estate investing “secrets” from instructors “hand-picked” by Trump. Trump has admitted he did not hand-pick instructors, but has argued the claim was marketing language not meant to be taken literally. He claims
“This is a jury consultant’s nightmare, to pick in a case like this.” Dershowitz
most students were happy with their courses. If the trial goes forward, several legal experts said it would be hard to seat an impartial jury, because so many people already have strong opinions about the president-elect. Parties often hire specialized jury consultants to pick jurors, but New York lawyer Robert Anello said they were not infallible. “If experienced pollsters can’t get it right,” he said, “how can a jury consultant who is not spending as much time studying the demographics?” In an interview a day before the election, Jeffrey Goldman, a lawyer for Trump in the New York case, said the media’s “drumbeat of distortion” about Trump University would make it hard to find impartial jurors. Several experts noted that jurors, who will answer a questionnaire in addition to being questioned by the lawyers and the judge, are generally taken at their word when they say they can be impartial. Boston jury consultant Edward Schwartz said he expects both sides to make an effort to vet jurors by their public social media postings. REUTERS

MANDATE? NOT SO FAST If Paul Ryan is no fan of Donald Trump. He’s made that clear for months. Yet within hours of this week’s upset victory, the speaker of the House was praising the man. “This is the most incredible political feat I have seen in my lifetime, Ryan said. “He heard those voices out there that other people weren’t hearing and he just earned a mandate. Maybe Ryan is just trying to save his job after a political realignment. (And going from reality show, real estate mogul to most powerful person on the planet is a heck of a realignment.) But there are two things wrong with Ryan’s assessment. First, the frustration, despair and anger of working-class Americans have been growing for years; easily found in thundering emails to Congress, raging town hall meetings, bitter memes on the internet and poisonous words on talk radio. “You have forgotten us! the small and medium-size towns scream amid soaring rural
TOM FOREMAN Opinion
suicide rates, boarded up main streets, insane levels of substance abuse down farm roads and the withering conviction there is no future for their kids except in some distant metropolis. Anyone could hear that, and everyone in D.C. did. They just ignored it. The problems seemed too intractable, the affected populations too spread out, and after all, globalization has been great for the cities where pretty much
all the power players, left and right, spend their time. But the second flaw in Ryan’s statement is “mandate. This word implies broad support, and while around 60 million people voted for President-elect Trump, about 60 million also voted for Hillary Clinton. Exit polls found 60 percent of the voters, even as they handed Mr. Trump the victory, still considered him unqualified for office. This suggests Republicans won not a mandate, but merely a chance to show they can shift the focus of D.C. away from itself and toward the great struggling masses of Americans of all creeds, backgrounds, and colors — and pursue genuine solutions based on detailed policies — two things sadly missing all through this campaign. And if they squander that chance, I suspect in a few very short years the cries of change that have now propelled two presidents to power will rise likes furies once again.

Long live Trump: Philippines’ Duterte says he wants no more quarrels with US Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated Donald Trump on his election win and said on Wednesday he now wished to stop quarrelling with ally the United States, recalling his anger at the Obama administration for criticizing him. The maverick leader, dubbed “Trump of the East” for his unrestrained rants and occasional lewd remarks, has repeatedly hit out at Washington in recent months, threatening to cut defense pacts and end military joint drills. “I would like to congratulate Mr. Donald Trump. Long live,” Duterte said in a speech to the Filipino community during a visit to Malaysia. “We are both making curses. Even with trivial matters we curse.

I was supposed to stop because Trump is there. I don’t want to quarrel anymore, because Trump has won.” Duterte won a May election by a huge margin and is often compared to Trump, having himself been the alternative candidate from outside of national politics. He campaigned on
a populist, anti-establishment platform and struck a chord among ordinary Filipinos with his promises to fix what he called a broken country. But the biggest surprise of Duterte’s presidency so far has been his hostility towards the United States, shown during near-daily eruptions of anger over its concerns about human rights abuses during his deadly war on drugs. He has also threatened repeatedly to severe a military relationship that has been a key element of Washington’s “pivot” to Asia. Duterte on Wednesday told Filipinos how angry he had been at Washington, saying it had threatened to cut off aid and had treated the Philippines like a dog tied to a post.

Kelly Ripa opens up about bad Botox experience It’s not often that celebrities own up to getting “work done” in order to enhance their appearance, beyond
good make-up and hair styles. But in an industry that relies so heavily on looks, many of our favorite celebrities are going under the knife and the needle in order to look their best. On Wednesday’s episode of her show “Live With Kelly,” Kelly Ripa opened up about an experience with Botox that didn’t work out so well. According to People, while co-hosting with Fox political commentator Megyn Kelly following the election, Ripa shared: “I
got bad Botox about … what was it, a year ago? And it was bad. It did something to my good side, so then I had two bad sides. I’m not kidding!” The host was adamant about not going into further details, but we give the 46-yearold props for being honest about the procedure.
Lady Gaga protests Trump election Many Americans were shocked and upset by Tuesday’s election results. Lady Gaga was among them. In fact, if we had to guess, it appears that as of Wednesday morning, Lady Gaga was firmly in the denial and anger stages of grief after Hillary Clinton’s stunning loss against Donald Trump for the presidency. Paul Reiser likes playing the jerk The king of the country club gets a reality check in “Red Oaks” Season 2. KATE MOONEY @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
For Paul Reiser, “Red Oaks” isn’t an ’80s nostalgia fest. The 59-year-old actor — who was just cast in Season 2 of another throwback ’80s show, the cult hit “Stranger Things” — says Amazon’s coming-of-age comedy series is more about “people in this lovely little world who are finding themselves.” That it takes place in the ’80s is incidental. Reiser plays Getty, the president of the Red Oaks Country Club and king of said lovely little world (although in Season 2, out Friday, that’s all about to change). He’s a Wall Street guy with a gruff demeanor and
sense of entitlement — yet, a likable jackass. “It’s very fun to play that, because a lot of the nastiest stuff is said with an absolute smile so you’re actually meant to think, ‘Is he kidding?’” he says. Let’s talk about Getty. He’s a jerk, but it might be surface-level. There’s certainly a pompousness and an egotistical side to him. Some of it is earned — he’s made a success for himself — even in Season 1 you see, he starts to relate to David [Craig Roberts] because he remembers when he was a caddy at a golf course and worked his way up. And you see his dedication to his family. How is making TV in the streaming era different from the days of “Mad About You”? It’s a very different pace. [All the episodes] are written in advance, it’s like shooting a movie piece by piece, but you know the whole story. The audiences have so many choices now, it’s like tapas restaurants: we’re still leaving full, but we’re just having a little bit of that, a little bit of that. What associations do you have with the ’80s? I’m looking forward to my 80s. [Laughs] I think often, with a little distance, people write about their prime, or pivotal years. The very first movie I ever did was “Diner,” which was Barry Levinson in the ’80s writing about the late ’50s. [“Red Oaks”] is [creator] Greg Jacobs remembering his world in the ’80s. It’s nice, [with “Red Oaks”], they’re not shoving it down your throat. There’s a great soundtrack, a reference here or there, “Oh, ‘Top Gun’ just came out.” They’re also not making fun of it, “Look at our stu-

In “Loving,” Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga play Richard and Mildred Loving. The names might not sound instantly familiar, but they should be: They were the mixed-race couple who fought antimiscegenation laws all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in the 1967 decision that deemed laws prohibiting interracial marriage
unconstitutional. Thing is, the Lovings were just ordinary folks from Virginia who were in love, got married and quietly fought for their rights until ACLU lawyers took it next level. The movie, by Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter,” “Mud”), respects this. It’s a quiet, intimate film, without the usual docudrama bombast. Edgerton, 42, and known for “The Gift,” talks to us about not feeling the burden of playing a widely known icon and how there’s more than one kind of revolutionary. beforehand, especially because I think it’s still a relatively obscure case for Americans. I was surprised I didn’t know the story. But I was more surprised that more Americans didn’t know the story, unless you studied law or have a similar situation in your own family. A lot of people have come up to us and said, “This is my grandparents’ story” or “This is my mom and dad’s story.” Not many people really knew about Richard and Mildred. In many ways, I felt like that evened the playing field. I didn’t feel like I wasn’t able to take on this privileged challenge and responsibility.

It does allow you two more opportunities to explore the characters as actors. They’re not massively iconic historical figures everyone knows; they’re regular folks who just happen to be involved in a landmark case. There’s a number of different kinds of revolutionaries. The two that come to my mind are the speech-makers, who stand at the podium and kick down doors. They do something knowing they may be in the firing line, or they may wind up in jail, or they may wind up having acts of violence committed against them. [Richard and Mildred] are the kinds of revolutionaries who find themselves unwittingly at the center of something big. As much as we look up to the Martin Luther King Jrs. of the world, I think we look up at them and think, “Wow, I’m not made of that stuff. I’m glad you’re alive and I’m glad you’re speaking on my behalf.” With Richard

and Mildred, perhaps we can identify with them more. We look at them and think, “I could be you. I imagine myself wearing your shoes and walking down your

road.” We need those people because, again, we can identify with them perhaps better than people who stand 10 feet tall. It’s sometimes tempting to watch a film about such a historical case and think that it’s all contained in the past. We still fight other forms of inequality. This situation still exists. It’s happening right now with same-sex couples. It’s all a question about the right to have a private sanctuary. In the case of Richard and Mildred, they were dragged out of their homes [by police]. In the case of same-sex couples, they find themselves having to come out of their homes to be vocal, in order to defend their right to go back to that private space. There’s something weird and ironic about having to go out and argue the case with people who should actually mind their own business.

A chance to explore the spectrum of the AsianAmerican and Pacific Islander (AAPI) experience arrives at the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival with its opening ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 10. And this year’s PAAFF will transcend being just a film festival. The festival, alongside its robust catalog of features, shorts and documentaries, invites attendees to academic presentations, live theater performances and culinary exhibits centered in the various Asian-American experiences. Rob Buscher, the third-year director of the festival, knows that film is inclusive in how it employs all sorts of art forms. We spoke with
him about how these means of expression are vital in the AAPI communities, particularly for multigenerational immigrants who might be slipping from the embrace of their connection to home. Buscher, whose parents were born in Japan, noted how film has to come to the community first, especially if it isn’t pervasive in an institutionalized, “OscarsSoWhite” Hollywood: “You’ve got to do a lot more than just show a movie to bring an audience. Even the Hollywood system is breaking down. It’s even harder
to fill the theater for an indie film that no one’s ever heard of. We’re still looking at building conversations around having the shared experience.” According to Buscher, 80 percent of the filmmakers involved in the films on display will be in attendance. That includes Danny Pudi, the Indian-Polish-American actor of “Community” fame, who will have his lead actor feature debut in PAAFF’s opening night film “The Tiger Hunter.” The festival has grown each year, seeing consistent growth in at-

Boasting one of the best views in the city, with balcony seating overlooking the Schuylkill, the Italian-inspired menu offers 10 varieties of wood-fired pizza, pasta dishes
and other entrees at affordable prices. While I will eventually explore other areas of the menu, I had pizza on the brain and decided to sample a few different pies to start. Though it was hard to pick just one to feature, The Clam really caught me by the tastebuds. I know what you’re thinking: “Clam on pizza? Really?” But trust me on this — it was tasty. What was immediately noticeable was the lightness of the dough. Made in-house over a three-day process, each slice was soft, thin and easily foldable — providing just enough cushion for the toppings. If you’re a thick crust fan, however, have no
fear — there’s plenty of carby crust goodness here. Parmesan cream and scamorza (an Italian cow’s milk cheese) made up the next layer on the pizza and was topped with crunchy bits of kale, finely cut garlic, Calabrian chile, scallion and, of course, generous portions of fresh clam. All-in-all, each bite was like a taste of the sea with a dash of saltiness courtesy of the clams, and the seaweedlike texture of the kale. The Parmesan cream and scamorza combo made it super moist and the various spices added just enough kick to heat things up — but not too much. It’s not for everyone, especially if you prefer red

things to do WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY tendance. It’s the largest Asian American Film Festival on the East Coast and is quickly becoming nationally recognized as a leader in the film festival wire. The AAPI communities refuse to live in silence. Many voices aren’t being heard, and this festival protrudes as a platform. Yes, there have been innovative steps forward. “Fresh Off the Boat” has been a huge success for ABC. Steven Yeun was beloved on “The Walking Dead.” “The Mindy Project” saw a vivacious revival on Hulu and “Master of None” resonated boldly to a wide audience. But then, hope deflates when Scarlett Johansson gets cast as Motoko Kusanagi in the upcoming live-action American adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell.” Buscher touched on #OscarsSoWhite, and how that discussion is
nothing new. “We’ve known for a long time that this is how Hollywood is. We have to create our own channels. There need to be these spaces in order for [AAPI experiences] to be celebrated. The last five years have been groundbreaking … but one show can’t represent all experiences. We have to figure out our own culture in a monocultural environment: ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ does not represent the entire AAPI experience.” The 2016 Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival takes place Nov. 10-2. “The Tiger Hunter” opens Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the International House, 3701 Chestnut St. Tickets are $10 for general admission and are discounted for students, seniors and International House members. 20 TRAVEL Get the most out of these destinations while it’s just the two of you.
Riviera Maya Spring break in Mexico is basically a birthright for Americans. College kids flock to Cancun, but the scene in the rest of the Riviera Maya is every bit as wild but geared for the nonkeg-standing crowd. Everyone deserves to experience a beach trip to Mexico at least once without kids, and hotels like the Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla make it easy by weeding out both the spring breakers and the diaper bag crowd with their adults-only concepts.
African Safari Kids love animals, but the massive critters you’ll encounter on the savanna aren’t of the petting-zoo variety. Many safaris require
No kids, will travel
Monte Carlo Monaco’s playground for the rich and famous doesn’t have a lot of jungle gyms. Monte Carlo is a destination best experienced with two free hands, one to raise a glass of Champagne or a Bond-style Vesper Martini, and the other to shake hands with the glitterati about town. You’ll find age restrictions, certainly at the casinos and but also restaurants. Most importantly, going to Monte Carlo sans kids means you won’t have to worry about finding a sitter while you’re getting the famous Bastien Gonzalez pedicure at the Metropole ESPA.
Monte Carlo ARTERRA/UIG
guests to sign waivers warning about the risks of communing with wild animals and end with warnings like, “you understand some areas in which you’ll be traveling are considered malarial.” Let’s just say spotting a lion is a different experience when you do not have to worry about your own cub.
Mumbai This is a city of contrasts, where bright futures and dark pasts coexist. It’s a place so full of flavor that even the locals can’t handle most street food; it’s also a destination so full of life that it shouldn’t be missed. Head there before kids enter the picture so you’re free to take risks haggling at the
Thieves’ Market, get lost gazing at the gold-plated roof inside the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple, and flag down a rickshaw for a night on the town.
Cartegena Although friends might scorn the idea of you bringing a child to Colombia, no one would bat an eyelash at the idea of an adult getaway in Cartagena. The city is Colombia’s enchanting fishing village on the edge of the Caribbean coast, and it’s one of the safest in the country. Sleep inside the walled city at the historic Alfiz Hotel, hop a ride on a chiva (the colorful opensided buses that roll through the city), and sip on fresh agua de coco from the street carts lining the city walls.
Walt Disney World Stay with us on this. Walt Disney World’s latest offerings have made it one of the best adult vacation experiences around. The park is home to the annual Epcot Food and Wine Festival, a slew of new boutique shops at Disney Springs, lavish 13-course dinners by a James Beard-nominated chef
at Victoria & Albert’s and late-night dancing options on the Disney Boardwalk.
The Maldives Getting there is part of the experience of this remote destination in the Indian Ocean — and it’s one that would be taxing on tiny travelers. The country consists of 1,190 islands only accessible via boat, seaplane or helicopter from the capital island of Male. But the rewards are great: Sip champagne while peering into the turquoise water and coral reefs through the glass floor of your overwater villa or dine underwater at the Conrad’s Ithaa Undersea Restaurant.
Northern Territory Often referred to as the Red Center for its stunning rust-hued panoramas, Australia’s Northern Territory is like no other place on the planet. Natural wonders like Uluru and Kakadu National Park rule the tourism industry, while little gems like the thermal pools of Mataranka and the luxury tented camps around the territory sweeten the deal.
Cusco Peru’s ancient city of Cusco was once the capital of the Incan Empire, and today it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique composition of 16th-century Spanish Baroque churches and ancient Incan ruins. The architecture has been preserved over the years, but walking from site to site isn’t as easy as you’d think, as the city sits at an elevation of around 11,200 feet. As if pushing a stroller on narrow cobblestone pathways wasn’t challenging enough, add a headache and some altitude sickness and you’ll see why you might want to travel light.
Dubai The United Arab Emirates’ biggest city is Disneyland for adults. Nothing can compare to the fun that awaits when you let yourself be a grown-up kid in Dubai, from the breakfast buffet at the Madinat Jumeirah Resort that has a gourmet ice cream station, snow skiing in the desert at the Dubai Mall, sinking your toes into imported Saudi Arabian sand at the new Terrace at the Burj al Arab or dune bashing.
Scottish Highlands The Highlands of Scotland are straight out of a movie, where the dreamlike landscape and craggy terrain act as the backdrop to an unfolding drama of clansmen and castles, whiskeys and mysteries. Hotels like the historic Culloden House set the stage for exploring Inverness, where you can spend the morning salmon fishing with a guide from You Fish Scotland on the same peaceful waters that will go into some of the region’s finest Scotches. And kids would really cut into your schedule of Scotch tastings at places like Tomatin and Aberfeldy.

BILL DUBIEL
NFL sleepers of the week
OPINION
Each week we will identify three players worth taking a shot on in deeper leagues.
Bill Dubiel is a fantasy football expert for Rotoballer.com.
Trevor Siemian, QB, Denver Broncos — The Saints defense allows an average of 300 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks. Siemian is a slam-dunk this week.
Possible changing of the guard in New York Veteran Rashad Jennings has been woefully ineffective this season for the New York Giants, and his ineptitude has left the door open for rookie Paul Perkins. In the Giants’ win over the Eagles on Sunday, each of the two backs received 11 carries, and Perkins was the (slightly) more productive of the two. Jennings is averaging a dismal 2.6 yards per carry, and it’s looking more and more likely that the time share could shift in Perkins’ favor in the very near future.
Unsuspecting wide receiver is the go-to in Tennessee Rishard Matthews has quietly become the top receiving option in Tennessee, and while that role has its limits in the run-heavy offense, it’s impossible to deny that the 27-year-old now carries every-week flex appeal. He’s scored five touchdowns in his last five games, and has led all Titans wide receivers in targets in that time.
Rob Kelley, RB, Washington Redskins — Head coach Jay Gruden announced that it would be Rob Kelley receiving a majority of the carries and that Matt Jones would need to “earn his way back.
With matchups against the porous Packers, Colts and Bears secondaries on deck, Matthews should be a top waiver wire add this week.
Jets veteran handicapped by uncertainty under center While there is no denying how talented Brandon Marshall is, even the best wide receivers can’t produce without a capable quarterback throwing them the ball. Unfortunately, Marshall has been incredibly underwhelming as a fantasy asset with Ryan Fitzpatrick playing some of the worst football of his career. It’s going to be tough to trust Marshall as anything more than a WR3 as long as Fitzpatrick is starting, and Marshall’s prospects would dip further if Bryce Petty were to take over as the starting QB.
Marqise Lee, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars — With Allen Hurns in the concussion protocol, Lee stands to see a huge uptick in targets this week.Â
Paul Perkins should see an increased workload soon. GETTY IMAGES

St. Joe’s basketball hoping Kimble is next Bembry Can the Hawks make another NCAA Tournament run? JEFF MCMENAMIN @Jeff_McMenamin sports@metro.us
Lamarr Kimble, the freshman sensation, knocked down a clutch jumper to give the eighth-seeded St. Joe’s Hawks (28-8, 13-5) a 58-51 lead over the top-seeded Oregon Ducks (31-7, 14-4) with just 5:33 remaining in the game. A win would send the Hawks to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since their miracle Jameer Nelson run in 2004. But the Hawks would go cold. An 18-6 Ducks run knocked off the upset bid as junior DeAndre Bembry (17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists) and senior Isaiah Miles (18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds) would end their stellar careers in disappointment. Coach Phil Martelli is left to regroup and rebuild upon the success of last season, with such a big chunk of the offense gone from a season ago. “The offensive part of it has been the biggest struggle, Martelli said. “I
Key returnee Lamarr Kimble will be relied on as a big oensive contributor for the Hawks this season. GETTY IMAGES
don’t worry defensively. We’ll come up with a game plan, we’ll be able to organize them on defense, but it’s just such a hard game when you don’t score. The Hawks hope that Kimble can fill some of that void. While Kimble’s stats of 6.0 points and 2.5 assists per game last season don’t blow anybody away, he registered double-digits in points for 10 of the team’s final 20 games. With Bembry and Miles gone, he’ll be asked to do a lot more offensively this season.

“We definitely have the potential to be really scary in terms of we’ve got a lot of guys who can score in different areas, from different places,â€? Kimble said. “Once we get everybody in their strong spots and we all play together and share the ball, and do all the little things that you’re supposed to do to win, it’ll turn out well in the long run.â€? Joining Kimble in the starting lineup will likely be junior guard Shevar Newkirk (8.0 points, 2.6 assists), junior forward James Demery (8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds), redshirt sophomore forward Markell Lodge and redshirt senior center Javon Baumann. For Lodge and Baumann, it will be their first time playing extensive minutes for the Hawks, who both were limited to just above four minutes a game in 2015-16.Â
Key additions F – Charlie Brown G – Nick Robinson G – Toliver Freeman G – Christian Vega F – Lorenzo Edwards
Key losses F – DeAndre Bembry (NBA) F – Isaiah Miles (graduated)
“We will play with a bigger player,â€? Martelli said. “That doesn’t mean we’ll play bigger, but we’ll play with a bigger player and we’ll play with less reliance on long-range shooting. We’re really trying to get this team to drive the ball as much as they can, try to put them on positions where they can drive the ball as much as we can.â€? First up for the Hawks is the Toledo Rockets on Saturday. You can listen in at 7 p.m. on 610 WIP.Â

Scorpio Make your home base your comfort zone. Express your feelings and share your long-term goals with the person or people you care about most.
Gemini Get involved in projects, activities or pursuits that are physically engaging. Strenuous activity will help you feel better and could lead to further success.
Sagittarius Mull over all the facts and consider the changes that make the most sense. Clearing emotional debris will encourage you to move forward without despair.
Cancer You can get ahead if you network or discuss your options with a headhunter or someone you’ve enjoyed working with in the past. Learn as you go.
Capricorn How you earn your living should be based on what you enjoy doing. Don’t fall short just because you are afraid to make your dreams come true.
Leo Get involved in projects you believe in. The people you meet and the contribution you make will help you make decisions that will change your life.
Aquarius Don’t give in to emotional manipulation or let anger lead to unfortunate mistakes. If you go high when others go low, you will find the strength to move forward.
Virgo Don’t give in to someone trying to control your affairs. An emotional outburst will be hard to avoid. Make your motives and decisions crystal clear.
Pisces Be creative when handling legal, contractual or money matters. A health issue due to stress will arise if you aren’t willing to do what needs to be done. EUGENIA LAST
