3 things you need to know US GOVERNMENT POSTS $44 BILLION DEFICIT IN OCTOBER

1

The U.S. government posted a $44 billion budget deficit in October, the first month of the 2017 fiscal year, a 68 percent decrease from the same month last year, the Treasury Department said. This gap in October 2015 was $137 billion, according to Treasury’s monthly budget statement. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected an $80 billion budget deficit for last month. When accounting for calendar adjustments, October would have shown an $84 billion deficit compared to an adjusted $88 billion deficit in the same month of 2015. Since 2009, when President Barack Obama assumed the presidency in the aftermath of the financial crisis, the deficit has fallen by two thirds. President-elect Donald Trump has promised to cut taxes and increase spending on infrastructure and the military, which would raise the deficit, economists say. REUTERS

JUDGE REJECTS TRUMP BID TO BAR CAMPAIGN STATEMENTS FROM FRAUD TRIAL

2

A U.S. judge on Thursday tentatively rejected a bid by Donald Trump to keep a wide range of statements from the presidential campaign out of an upcoming fraud trial over his Trump University venture. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego said Trump’s lawyers can renew objections to specific campaign statements and evidence during trial. The tentative ruling came in advance of a pretrial hearing later on Thursday. The 2010 lawsuit, one of three over the defunct Trump University venture, was filed on behalf of students who say they were lured by false promises to pay up to $35,000 to learn Trump’s real estate investing “secrets” from his “hand-picked” instructors. Trump owned 92 percent of Trump University and had control over all major decisions, the students’ court papers say. REUTERS

MADAME TUSSAUDS LONDON WORKS ON NEW TRUMP WAX FIGURE

3

A new addition will soon be coming to Madame Tussauds, London’s famed wax museum, which on Thursday showed some of the behind-the-scenes work on making a replica figure of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The museum had already created clay sculptures of the Republican Trump and his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, before Tuesday’s election. It is now embarking on the full wax figure in time for Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration. On its Facebook page, Madame Tussauds on Thursday revealed the wax head for the Trump figure, with a hair inserter slowly starting work on the New York businessman’s distinctive blonde hairstyle. Staten Island Trump love echoes gripes of the country The red borough feels like the “redheaded stepchild.” AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

amanda.mikelberg@metro.us

When it comes to politics, Staten Island is the yin to the yang of the rest of New York City. And in Tuesday’s presidental election, Staten Island went even redder than it has before. In 2012, Barack Obama won against Romney in Staten Island by a very slim, 49.9 to 49.1 percent. On Nov. 8, 57 percent of the borough voted Trump — the same proportion of votes the Republican presidentelect got in the state of Kansas. The entirety of New York City voted 79 percent in favor of Hillary Clinton. “There are a lot of people who are very happy today. They are the vocal majority. Then there’s the silent minority — they’re not acting like how they are in Manhattan,” where thousands are marching in protest, points out longtime Staten Island resident Lenny Laviscount. The nature of Trump enthusiasm on Staten Island is something of a mi-

crocosm for what drove his election in the rest of the nation: a sense of being forgotten. “They feel like Staten Island is treated like the red-headed stepchild of the city,” Laviscount said. Trump made several campaign stops in Staten Island, providing some acknowledgement to the people who felt left out. “A lot of people have been here for a very long time, and they have always been Republican and always will be. But there are also NYPD, FDNY and sanitation people that feel like they are getting the short end of the stick,” said Laviscount, in particular, in regards to new

contracts. “They are going to vote against whatever they are told they should vote for, because they want something different from the promise that they don’t get.” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders encapsulated the Trump enthusiasm that’s echoed in Staten Island. “Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media,” Sanders said. Laviscount said crucial infrastructure measures, like making sure buses are available at the Staten Island Ferry, are frequent-

ly overlooked. “Can you imagine what it’s like for someone who gets off the ferry at 1 a.m. and there’s no bus to the other side of the island? They have to have someone drive them home or take a car service because there’s no bus.” Staten Island has gotten particularly fed up with road projects that drag on for a decade or more, such as construction of the Gowanus Expressway and the Goethels Bridge, and they find Trump’s commitment to infrastructure particularly appealing. Trump “looks at cities sort of the way a developer would,” Staten Island Republican Councilman Joseph C. Borelli, told The New York Times. In another sense, Staten Islanders are concerned about an influx of people who seek refuge from the rising prices of the other boroughs because it’s still possible to buy an affordable home there. In the meantime, their jobs are at risk and their communities are diluted because of newcomers who don’t share in the same cultural interests. They identify with Trump’s sentiment to protect borders. De Blasio hopes President Trump will remember what it’s like to be a ‘New Yorker’ Like millions of New Yorkers and citizens around the country, Mayor Bill de Blasio was not happy following Tuesday’s presidential election. “I’m deeply disappointed by the results of this election — but I’m equally dedicated to our democracy and determined to preserve the values our city cherishes,” de Blasio said Wednesday in a news release. He congratulated New Yorker Donald Trump and added that “it’s no secret” he has “profound political disagreements” with him, but commits “to working with the new administration, positively and

constructively, to rebuild our infrastructure, create more jobs, protect our residents and preserve the liberties that New Yorkers enjoy. “I take solace in the fact that the presidentelect is a dyed-in-the-wool

New Yorker, and I hope and trust he will remember the lessons of a life lived in New York City.” The mayor made several points about the city’s history as a haven for immigrants, a topic that played a large role

in Trump’s contentious campaign. “This has always been a place where everyone had a chance to make it,” de Blasio said. “We stand behind Lady Liberty with open arms to welcome immigrants and refugees. We always have and we always will. … We will continue to keep our people safe — all our people, regardless of who they are or where they come from. “I call on all New Yorkers to move forward together, resolute and determined to protect and preserve the city we love and the values we cherish,” he said. Thousands pay tribute to slain NYPD officer

Veteran NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo will be remembered as a hero who lost his life protecting a fellow officer, speakers recalled Thursday at his funeral. Tuozzolo was killed last week as he and Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo confronted a gunman who had taken his estranged wife and toddler son hostage in the Bronx. Kwo was wounded in the leg. Police shot and killed the gunman.

Edward Mullins, president of the Sergeants’ Benevolent Association, said during his remarks during the service that Kwo asked him to share a recent conversation: “Sgt. Kwo said to me, ‘Paul saved my life, Ed. He saved my life. I was approaching that car too and I didn’t see what Paul saw. I would have continued to approach that car, just as Paul did, but Paul’s final words were a warning to me and my partner. He yelled to us, ‘Gun, gun, gun!’” Mullins said Tuozzolo’s final actions “can only be described as those of a hero.” An estimated 12,000 police officers gathered on Long Island to mourn Tuozzolo, a 41-year-old married father of two young boys.

Mayor Bill de Blasio offered his condolences to Tuozzolo’s family on behalf of the city’s eight million residents. “He served in an exemplary fashion, doing his all, giving his all for all of us,” he said. The mayor then directed his remarks to Tuozzolo’s two sons. “You’re so very young and will take time for these words to make sense to you, but I want you to know I have something deeply in common with you,” he said. “Just like you, I lost my father when I was young … but I knew every day after we lost him, that he was a hero. I know you will remember your dad as a hero, years from now when you’re grown up. That will give you comfort.”

The zone for the high-achieving and overcrowded West 70th Street school would decrease, and two of the six buildings in the Lincoln Tower complex would be reassigned to PS 191, which is expected to move to a new facility. Mostly black and Hispanic students attend PS 191, and 7 percent of its students passed state math tests, while 24 percent passed English language arts. Comparatively, PS 199 is mostly white, with 85 and 82 percent of students passing math and language arts, respectively.

Some parents of PS 452 students oppose that school’s move 16 blocks south to West 61st Street due to concerns about the commute and ties to their neighborhood. Those who approve the move, including its principal and staff, have argued the school will be able to flourish and diversify in a larger space. The District 3 CEC is going to vote on the proposal next month for the changes to begin next fall. Under the proposal, current students and their siblings would not have to leave their zoned schools. Teen brothers’ nonprofit aims to get 40 Bed-Stuy kids to Harvard Ambitious boys promise an academic adventure to dozens of disadvantaged teens. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

amanda.mikelberg@metro.us

For two years, teen brothers Rusty and River Fields have operated a Saturday tutoring program for kids 5 through 13 from their home in Bedford-Stuyvesant. “Because kids were starting to sound apathetic, like things are the way they are and never going to change,” elder brother Rusty, 17, said about the students they tutor in the economically depressed neighborhood. Rusty and Rivers, 15,

told Metro that they practice a philosophy of “each one, teach one.” If everyone donates their time to mentoring and making a difference to one person, the benefits grow exponentially, they said. Tutoring is just one of the many things The Fields Foundation, their registered nonprofit, does to propel their mission to expand intellectual horizons for inner city youth. They also established the Bainbridge Times, a local paper to give a voice to their community and support businesses, and for the past four weeks they’ve been raising money to sponsor 40 kids for a road trip to Harvard. The brothers said they loved their experience at the first session

of the 2016 annual Angela R. Matthew High School Seminar Program at Harvard Mock Trial Association and they wanted to share the opportunity for the role-playing trial experience with other kids. But they found themselves in a bit of a cash pickle when four spots quickly turned into a promise to 40 high schoolers for an all-expense paid trip to Cambridge, Massachusetts, that would cost a total of $15,000 in transportation, food and accommodations. “We’ve been aggressively fundraising,“ said Rusty. “We wanted this to be absolutely free so there would be no barrier to get involved.” The brothers have raised money by hosting event dinners and bake

sales, and started a GoFundMe campaign. Just a day before their bus was supposed to leave from Bainbridge Street, they were still $2,000 shy of their goal, but the brothers remained confident that they would raise the money with the help of churches, busi-

nesses and community members. One major donor is Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who met with the brothers on Thursday to give them a pep talk. “I would prefer these students in the halls of Harvard than in the halls of Rikers Island,”

Adams told them. The brothers, who both want to be neurosurgeons, said their father and the borough president are their role models. “He taught us persistence and perseverance. If you have a goal, just keep working with it,” Rivers said of Adams.

Giuliani touts qualifications for attorney general on CNN The former mayor previously said he’s not looking for a new job. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev

alexis.sachdev@metro.us

Rudy Giuliani appears to be posturing for a job in President-elect Donald Trump’s White House, just days after the Republican clinched a win over Hillary Clinton. On CNN Thursday morning, the former New York City mayor and one of Trump’s loudest surrogates touted his qualifications to be attorney general to anchor Chris Cuomo. “Do you have it in you to be attorney general? Do you feel that you have the energy?” Cuomo asked on “New Day.” Giuliani responded: “Oh my God … I certainly have the energy, and there’s probably nobody that knows the Justice Department better than me.” “I was an assistant U.S. attorney,” he said. “I was the associate attorney general of the United States, third-ranking official under Ronald Reagan. I’ve argued in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. I’ve argued in almost every circuit. And I tried, as a personal lawyer and U.S. attorney, over 50 cases.”

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. GETTY IMAGES

“It’s a good résumé,” responded Cuomo, brother of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The remarks were clearly a departure from previous interviews Giuliani gave about the subject. In a July phone call with NJ.com blog The Auditor, Giuliani indicated he wasn’t angling for a cabinet post. “I certainly wouldn’t answer that unless it was offered,” he said. “I am very happy in what I am doing. … I am not looking for a job.” Currently, he heads Giuliani Security & Safety. He took a leave of absence from his Park Av-

enue law firm, Greenberg Traurig, to ramp up his efforts for Trump’s campaign. When pressed further for an answer from The Auditor, Giuliani said it’s “very presumptuous to talk about a job that hasn’t been offered.” Giuliani isn’t the only contender for the highranking position. Insiders say New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who currently heads Trump’s transition team, could also be tapped for attorney general, despite being ensnared in the Bridgegate scandal. According to CNN, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions is also a rumored candidate for the spot.

Now women are rushing to get it as fast as we can make it.”

Before the L train shuts down, it will increase service as another line gets repairs. An unlikely hero has emerged to save straphangers from the brunt of yet another MTA closure: the L train. In a statement released this morning by the transit agency, beginning June 2017, another 50 roundtrips will be added to the L line while repairs are undertaken on the M line at the Myrtle Avenue stop in Bushwick. As the press release explains, the MTA will demolish and completely rebuild the more-thancentury-old Myrtle Viaduct and the Atlantic Railway Bridge at Fresh Pond Road. The work is being completed in anticipation even bigger repairs to be done on the Canarsie Tunnel and tracks of the L line, which is slated to begin in 2019. As many already know, work on the tunnel is expected to put the L train out of commission between Manhattan and the Bedford Avenue station for 18 months, leaving the JMZ trains to pick up some of the slack through added service. The repairs to the M line infrastructure would support this increased use. “Our subway system turned 112 this year, and it never gets a break. In order to keep up with demand, we must work now to shore up our infrastructure so trains can keep running for another hundred years,”

NYC Transit President Ronnie Hakim voiced. “Adding more trips helps get our customers where they need to be faster, but we also must balance that extra strain on our equipment and fleet with a robust maintenance program and an eye on investing in our future.” All in all, temporary long-term service changes to the L, J,M, and Z lines will include: • 11 additional roundtrips during weekdays on the L. • 12 additional roundtrips during Saturday mornings and afternoons on the L. • 27 additional roundtrips on Sundays from morning to evening on the L. • On weekdays, M trains will operate between the Forest Hills-71 Avenue EFMR station and the Broadway Junction ACJZL station. Some trains will operate between Forest Hills-71 Avenue and the 2 Avenue FM station during afternoon peak hours. Alternate bus service will be provided to M stations that are closed during the reconstruction projects. • JZ trains will make all stops between Broadway Junction and Marcy Avenue. The MTA reports that these service changes will cost $1.7 million and could run up to 10 months.

Trump meets Obama at the White House President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump met on Thursday for the first time, setting aside the deep rancor that dominated the long campaign season to discuss the transition to the Republican’s inauguration on Jan. 20. Their 90-minute meeting in the White House Oval Office, with no aides present, took place just two days after Trump’s stunning election defeat of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Obama, who vigorously campaigned for his fellow Democrat to succeed him, had repeatedly called Trump unfit for the president’s office, while the businessman had often dubbed Obama’s eightyear tenure a “disaster.â€? But in separate postelection remarks on Wednesday both men appeared to seek to help the country heal from a bitterly divisive campaign, and that tone continued into the White House meeting. Seated next to Obama after their talks, Trump told reporters: “We really

discussed a lot of situations, some wonderful, some difficulties. He said Obama explained “some of the really great things that have been achieved, but did not elaborate. “It was a great honor being with you and I look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future, Trump said, with a tone of deference. Trump, a real estate magnate who has never held political office, later met congressional leaders, including House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican who has had a strained relationship with the party’s presidential candidate. Amid those efforts to bury hatchets, there were scattered protests in a string of U.S. cities against

Trump for a second day on Thursday. Security fences were erected around Trump’s new hotel in Washington, just blocks from the White House, and around New York’s Trump Tower as students protested his election. Obama said he had offered assistance to Trump over the next couple of months, and urged the country to unite to face its challenges. “We now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds, Obama said, adding he and Trump discussed a range of domestic and foreign policy issues and details related to the transition period. Protesters take to streets for a second day to decry Trump election A day after thousands of people took to the streets in at least 10 U.S. cities, fresh protests were held. Police put up security fences around Presidentelect Donald Trump’s new Washington hotel on Thursday and a line of concrete blocks shielded New York’s Trump Tower as students around the country staged a second day of protests over his election. A day after thousands of people took to the streets in at least 10 U.S. cities from Boston to Berkeley, California, chanting “not my president” and “no Trump,” fresh protests were held in Texas and San Francisco. A Trump campaign

representative did not respond to requests for comment on the protests but Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and a high-profile Trump supporter, called the demonstrators “a bunch of spoiled cry-babies.” “If you’re looking at the real left-wing loonies on the campus, it’s the professors not the students,” Giuliani said on Fox News on Thursday. “Calm down, things are not as bad as you think.” The protesters blasted Trump for campaign rhetoric critical of immigrants, Muslims and allegations of sexual abuse of women. More than 20 people were arrested for blocking or attempting to block highways in Los Angeles and Richmond, Virginia, early Thursday morning. White House spokesman Joshua Earnest said

Obama supported the demonstrators’ right to express themselves peacefully. “We’ve got a carefully, constitutionally protected right to free speech,” Earnest told reporters. “The president believes that that is a right that should be protected. In San Francisco, more than 1,000 students walked out of classes on

Thursday morning and marched through the city’s financial district carrying rainbow flags representing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, Mexican flags and signs decrying the president-elect. Several hundred students at Texas State University in San Marcos took to the campus to protest Trump’s election, with many students saying they fear he will infringe the civil rights of minorities and the LGBT community. In New York’s Washington Square park, several hundred people gathered to protest Trump’s election. Three miles to the north at the gilt Trump Tower, where Trump lives, 29-year-old Alex Conway stood holding a sign that read “not my president.” “This sign is not to

say he isn’t the president of the United States, but for two days I can use my emotion to be against this outcome and to express that he’s not mine,” said Conway, who works in the film industry. “The only thing I can hope for is that in four years I’m proved wrong.” In Washington, a jogger shouted an expletive about Trump as he passed the Trump International Hotel on Thursday, just blocks from the White House, where the former reality TV star had his first meeting with President Barack Obama to discuss transition plans. More anti-Trump demonstrations are planned heading into the weekend, according to organizers’ online posts. One urged protesters to rally in Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20. REUTERS

BRIEF Trump team contacted JPMorgan’s Dimon for Treasury role A senior person on President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team contacted JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon to see if he would be interested in being U.S. Treasury secretary, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday. It is unclear how Dimon responded, said the person, who was not authorized to speak

publicly. Dimon has said multiple times in the past that he is not interested in the job - most recently in September. JPMorgan spokesman Andrew Gray declined to comment. CNBC earlier reported that Trump’s advisers had discussed the idea of Dimon, 60, becoming Treasury secretary. Dimon is viewed as a leader on Wall Street and his name has been floated for government positions in the past. On Wednesday,

he sent a memo to staff calling for unity in the aftermath of the contentious election. Trump has been critical of Wall Street and the banking industry and once called Dimon “the worst banker in the United States.” But Trump’s close circle of advisers includes several hedge fund executives, investors and former bankers with whom the industry is now working to build close ties. Lingering resentment against the financial industry following

the 2007-2009 crisis has made Dimon’s chances of being nominated for a federal government position less certain. “I would love to be president of the United States of America,” Dimon told the Economic Club of Washington in September. “Until Donald Trump got to where he was, they said you’ll never see a rich businessman who’s never been in politics be president. I clearly was wrong about that.” REUTERS

Murders of transgender people hit an all-time high in the United States this year, campaigners said on Thursday, amid fears of a backlash against the transgender community following the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president. GLAAD, an advocacy group that tracks transgender murders, said 24 transgender people were murdered, exceeding last year’s tally of 22. Most of this year’s victims were women of color, GLAAD said. The announcement comes as transgender advocates worry of a reversal of their civil rights gains under the new government of Presidentelect Trump. During his election campaign, Trump said he embraced the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. But his promise to nominate a conservative justice to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court has raised fears that an expansion of transgender rights under President Barack Obama is now under threat. Kevin Nadal, executive director of the Center for LGBTQ Studies

at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, said he feared there could “definitely be an increase in hate crimes against trans and queer people” under a Trump government. “When candidates who demonstrate hate are elected, they give similarly-minded people the permission to act on that hate,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. In 2015, the New York-based National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, an advocacy group, classified as hate crimes all but four killings of transgender or gender non-conforming people in the United States. The latest victim was Noony Norwood, a 30-year-old black transgender woman who was shot in Richmond, Virginia, earlier this week. The killing follows a trend that has seen the death toll for transgender women of color climbing in recent years, said Nick Adams, a GLAAD spokesman. The organization has been compiling its figures since 2013 by tracking homicide cases in the media and when notified by families of the victims and community members. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed for the first time to rule on transgender rights in a case in which a Virginia public school district is fighting to prevent a female-born transgender high school student from using the boys’ bathroom. Add trans people to the list of groups whose hard-won rights will be in jeopardy soon enough. Let’s stay positive, though, or at least take in Sean S. Baker’s raucous comedy, which trails two trans sex workers (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor) on a crazy Christmas Eve, not just trying to get by, but screaming and hollering and raising Cain as they do it.

The new, cinephile-centric streaming service FilmStruck boasts untold goodies. It also contains this vital doc/concert movie from 1973, which hangs at a music concert honoring the 1965 Watts riots. In between killer sets by Rufus and Carla Thomas and Isaac Hayes, it sneaks in bracing chats about race with, among others, a lacerating Richard Pryor. Jennifer Grey has made her way back to the ’80s. This time around, instead of a Catskills resort, it’s a New Jersey country club, “Red Oaks.” In Amazon’s sweet, slice-of-life comedy series, the actress plays Judy Myers, a slightly neurotic housewife on a quest to find herself after she and her husband, Sam (Richard Kind), split up. Not unlike her son, the college-age David (Craig Roberts), who coaches tennis at the club while trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life, Judy is also

coming of age. Season 2, out Friday, shows her exploring her new found freedom — and bisexuality — like “an adolescent in a midlife body,” says Grey. We chatted with the 56-year-old actress about what she misses most about the era, and why we won’t be seeing her in the “Dirty Dancing” remake.

You sound pretty nostalgic. I’m nostalgic for boredom, daydreaming, looking out the window in the car, sitting with your thoughts, processing your feelings, thinking about things in a deeper way, because your brain and your emotions naturally want to process things in a deeper way if they’re given a chance. Oh, and books. [Laughs]

What’s it like going We read that you turned back to the ’80s? down a role in ABC’s It feels like yesterday. “Dirty Dancing” remake. Doesn’t feel like such People really a big deal. It feels like talk about yesterday, without cellthat phones and the internet. a lot, Which means, people almost look at each other when every they walk down the day street. And the teenagers [today], the only way you can get them to do anything is take away their GETTY phone. We IMAGES don’t spank anymore, we take away their phones. [“Red Oaks”] is a world before we were invaded by devices we’re trying to connect to each other through, but are definitely not providing us with the connection we’re craving.

It’s not so much that I turned it down, because that sounds so crappy. It’s just that it’s not appropriate. I did the original, and if someone wants to make a new one they should do a new one, but not with me, because then it’s not a new one. I’m excited for them and I want to see what they come up with. I respect their vision. It should be its own thing. We have to ask: Will there be any dance numbers in this season of “Red Oaks”? I dance with my son at a wedding this season. Hope that’s not a spoiler. No big musical numbers, no. They know I can’t dance. [Laughs] Another series with ’80s vibes: “Stranger Things.” Have you watched it? I loved the ’80s of that. I love those kids so much. [Director/producer] Shawn Levy’s a friend of mine, he did a great job, those Duffer brothers [creators] did a great job, and that young English girl [Millie Bobby Brown] who plays Eleven. The show is very much a genre of “Poltergeist,” psychic phenomenon — a kind of sci-fi thing. [But “Red Oaks”] is nothing like that.

The music of Adel Souto’s band 156 has been described as a drum circle in a rusty junkyard. But their new record, “Memento Mori, is more like a drum circle in a graveyard — the group used only human bones to create a meditative soundtrack for contemplating life and death. Sound morbid? That’s the opposite of Souto’s intent. “There is no evil aura or evil intent behind this music, says Souto, who’s holding a free record release party open to the public on Nov. 12. “I really wanted to express the medieval European practice of ‘Ars Moriendi’ [art of dying]. The concept of “dying well dates to the 1400s. Instead of doing your contemplation quietly in a candlelit room with a skull, as was the custom in the Renaissance era, guests at Saturday’s event will gather at the appropriately unusual venue of SoHo Psychoanalytic. “It’s a group of psychiatrists that are very into the work of Freud, especially some of his lesser-known interests, which is the occult, death, surreal art, he explains. (And in case you’re worried, owning and selling human bones is legal in the U.S.) Souto’s musical career began in punk rock bands in the mid-‘80s, then veered toward more experimental sounds by the early ‘90s. It was while working at a tattoo parlor in 2012 that he first saw human bones and got the idea to use them as percussive instruments. The Tibetans also use them in a different way to make music: A “thighbone trumpet called kangling is carved from a femur to be played during a funeral ritual. The record is “very primitive, structured with tribal elements. Despite all bones producing the same sound, with only

slight fluctuations depending on how tightly they’re held, Souto decided against making drums or stringed instruments out of them. The tracks on “Memento Mori were made purely by striking and scraping the bones, plus the carved kangling. The band also varied their sound by recording at various locations around the city, like Fort Tilden and even a subway platform. “I wanted just the sounds of bones or human breath passing through them, he says. “Let me try a pure sound.

An educational series, sponsored by Coloplast Corp., designed to inform and empower. www.ColoplastMensHealth.com

Sunday features two franchises that entered the season with high hopes and promise, only to see it all washed away early on. The Jets (3-6) and Los Angeles Rams (3-5) arrived at their sad situations in different ways, as New York endured a brutal six-game start to the season where it lost five of its first contests, while Los Angeles started hot at 3-1 but is now on a four-game tailspin (1 p.m., Fox). Both teams have quarterback issues with the Jets sporting Ryan Fitzpatrick and his league-high 13 interceptions, while the Rams roll out Case Keenum (nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions), who is average at best. Each franchise also has neophyte signal callers as backups, New York’s Bryce Petty and Los Angeles’ Jared Goff, this past spring’s No. 1 overall pick — and for some reason, neither backup can see the field as their more experienced starters take a blowtorch to this highlyflammable kindling of a season.  Fitzpatrick, though, is dealing with a sprained MCL, so his grip on the job may be tenuous. Keenum’s job seems more secure since head coach Jeff Fisher deemed that he won’t turn to Goff until the Rams are out of the playoff picture — which could be any week now. Since the quarterback situation is a mess for both teams, look for the offensive game plans to be run-heavy to start, as a way to alleviate pressure. This should be the formula every week, except for the fact that Jets’ offensive coordinator Chan Gailey sometimes forgets he has a

borderline Hall of Famer in the backfield in Matt Forte — as well as a very suitable backup in Bilal Powell. And the Rams simply, and surprisingly, can’t run the ball despite having last season’s Rookie of the Year in Todd Gurley, who has tallied just 451 rushing yards, 3.1 yards per carry and three scores.   Both teams sport a very good defense, particularly up front, which means the outcome may be decided by one of the inept signal callers. Buckle up, Jets and Rams fans, because Sunday could be a bumpy ride for both offenses.  Â

1Â Healthy Fitz?Â

The hobbled signal caller is dealing with a knee sprain, but deemed that he’s “definitely optimisticâ€? that he’ll be able to go out there and play — but should he? Los Angeles is a mess much like New York, but the one thing going for them is a hellacious pass rush, particularly its four-man defensive front. The Rams have 15 sacks and six fumble recoveries in its first eight games, meaning they know how to get after the quarterback. Fitzpatrick could be a sitting duck for a speedy and exotic defense that features the likes of defensive tackles Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers and defensive ends William Hayes and Robert Quinn, to go with the fleet Alec Ogletree and converted safety Mark Barron at linebacker. The Rams’ unique front allows them to either rush a traditional look of four linemen or send its two linebackers and its extra defensive back from a five-man secondary at any given moment. It could be a “chuck and duckâ€? afternoon for a wounded Fitzpatrick.      Â

to 2Â Run victory

Both Forte and Gurley

are amazing dual-threat options, so it’s important for both offenses to feature their star running back. Smart money is on the Jets to come out running the ball, both to protect a one-legged Fitzpatrick from shouldering the burden and to keep the ball out of the air and into the hands of Rams defenders. The Rams’ issues have been both self-inflicted and personnel. Fisher has said the game plan has gotten away from Gurley far too much, particularly in last week’s loss to Carolina when he only had 12 carries. Gurley is averaging just 13 carries per game over the last three weeks, all losses. And those defeats were all one-score deficits, meaning the Rams weren’t forced to exclusively throw, but chose to — while ignoring their best offensive weapon. Whichever offense gets its ground game on track will have a huge advantage in setting the tempo and controlling the outcome of the game.  Â

3Holding the lineÂ

It’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which both quarterbacks light it up, as the defensive front seven on each team is loaded with talent. The Jets face a defense that has stars at every level, beginning with the All-Pro Donald, who’s already gathered 25 sacks in just 40 career games. That’s outside linebacker-type stats and the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year is doing that with his hand in the ground battling through the muck and mire of the nasty trenches. Donald has been exceptional again this year, and his five sacks ranks second in the league for interior linemen — second only to the Jets’ star defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who has six on the season.

They can get back on track in that column against a softer opponent in New York. Andy Dalton should connect with A.J. Green early and often against the Giants’ awful pass defense (24th in the league). The Bengals’ D has some give to it (ranked 20th in passing), but they can afford to “cheatâ€? against the pass a bit more than they’re used to as the Giants have averaged less than

50 yards rushing in their last four contests. The pick: Bengals (Even) ROBERT CRISCOLA

Aries Control your emotions. Saying what’s on your mind will not bring the results you are looking for. An element of surprise will be useful. Don’t overreact.

Libra Emotions will flare up. You can show passion, but don’t force your will on others. Taking the time to figure out what’s best for everyone will help you gain respect.

Taurus Taking short trips, holding business meetings or spending time with someone who makes you think and laugh will prompt you to follow your dream.

Scorpio Take action and move forward without looking back. Letting go of the past will be your ticket to success. Live in the moment and focus on your future.

Gemini Look to the people you have found resourceful in the past and collaborate with them. A serious approach to both business partnerships will improve your connection.

Sagittarius Size things up and hunker down when it comes to personal and professional challenges. You stand to make gains if you don’t agonize over missed opportunities.

Cancer Keep your emotions and feelings to yourself in order to avoid a dispute with someone. Focus on creative endeavors and personal gains.

Capricorn A steady pace will help you avoid complaints. If you stick to what you know and do best, you will discover that you have more opportunities than you realize.

Leo Explore new avenues and interests. Take part in an event or activity that will help you grow and explore new possibilities. Do something special with a loved one.

Aquarius Take a moment to consider the pros and cons of a situation, and be sure to keep your money safely tucked away. Don’t loosen your wallet.

Virgo Take action and do what’s best for you. Don’t expect anyone else to look out for you. Gather facts and make a statement based on what will help you get ahead.

Pisces Focus on what you need to accomplish. A change in the way you handle others can work to your advantage. Finish what you started. EUGENIA LAST
