3 things you need to know US SPY CHIEF SAYS HE’S SUBMITTED LETTER OF RESIGNATION
1
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper announced his resignation and said it “felt pretty good” to step down, ending a six-year tenure as the top U.S. spy that included a sometimes rocky relationship with Congress. Clapper, 75, a retired three-star U.S. Air Force general, will stay on until Democratic President Barack Obama leaves office in January. He has said for months he intended to leave when Obama departed and his replacement will be chosen by Republican President-elect Donald Trump. Clapper’s formal letter of resignation was issued in response to a White House request that all Obama administration political appointees submit resignations effective at noon on Jan. 20, a representative for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said. DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE TO BE COMPLETED DESPITE PROTESTS
2
The company behind the controversial Dakota Access crude pipeline will seek to complete the project even if protests against its construction continue, its chief executive told the PBS NewsHour television news program. “This is not a peaceful protest,” said Kelcy Warren of Energy Transfer Partners. “If they want to stick around and continue to do what they’re doing, great, but we’re building the pipeline.” Dakota Access, halted by the federal government in September after protests, has drawn opposition from the Native American Standing Rock Sioux tribe and environmentalists who say it could pollute water supplies and destroy sacred historic tribal sites. Demonstrators fanned out across North America on Tuesday to demand that the U.S. government either halts or reroutes the pipeline, while Energy Transfer asked a federal court for permission to complete it. SOURCE: AOL TO CUT 500 JOBS, MOSTLY IN CORPORATE UNITS
3
Verizon Communications Inc’s AOL digital media unit will lay off 5 percent of its workforce, or about 500 people, to consolidate operations after recent acquisitions, a person familiar with the situation said on Thursday. Most of the cuts will be in corporate units, including human resources, finance, marketing and communications, while resources will be shifted to AOL’s mobile, video and data businesses, the source said. Chief Executive Officer Tim Armstrong informed employees about the cuts in an email on Thursday morning. REUTERS

Sometimes you don’t go looking for a cause, but a cause comes along and finds you. That’s sort of what happened to Heather Shearn, 33, a mom of two from Passyunk, who after Donald Trump’s election, organized a “Love Trumps Hate” rally to take place this Saturday. Her intention was to foster a positive and safe space for people who felt marginalized by Trump’s rhetoric, she said. She expecting a crowd of 100 to 150 to gather to march from City Hall to the National
Constitution Center. Within hours, hundreds of people responded to her social-media invitation. As of Thursday, about 2,000 people said they plan to attend. “It just went viral,” Shearn said. Now, instead of listing herself as the sole organizer, she and some friends have created a group, People United USA. They rebranded the march “The People United in Love — Defend Our Civil Rights.” And instead of just displaying anger, Shearn said, she hopes the rally will be a positive, educational and family-friendly experience. “Yes, we are protesting the Trump administration, but it’s also to bring the people together and educate them on how we can create effective change,” Shearn explained, saying she
wants to focus on contacting legislators and organizing to oppose “the Trump administration, all of the rhetoric of bigotry and hate of his campaign, and the people he is bringing in that will support that.” Shearn has a background as a special event planner, and is a member of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which she joined after the Charleston church shooting last year. But she has never been involved in politics or community organizing before. Now she wants to harness the anger that’s been expressed in nightly protests in Philly and nationwide into something positive. “Anger will fuel the change. It’s not like these issue arose all of a sudden because Donald Trump was elected,”
she said. “We’ve evolved from when the Constitution was first written,” she said. The event specifically asks for no displays of violence or flag-burning, and for attendees to be respectful toward police who will provide an escort. The focus will be on organizing to defend civil rights and protecting minorities during the next four years, the things that some people are most afraid a Trump presidency will jeopardize, she said. “It’s time that the people come together from all walks of life to show this is not OK,” Shearn said. “This is not what our country is about.” The People United in Love will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Broad and JFK before marching to the National Constitution Center.

Students at the University of Pennsylvania and other colleges around the nation walked out of their classrooms at precisely 2:15 p.m. on Thursday to demonstrate against racist messages that circulated around the West Philadelphia campus last week. “We all refuse to attend universities or live in a country where people threaten our safety and silence us,” organizers behind the Facebook event #StandWithPenn wrote on the page. “We need your help to make this possible.” The event was coordinated by Students Organizing for Unity and Liberation and Black Graduate and Professional Student Assembly. The action, in which students planned to wear all black, comes less than a week after black freshmen at the university were added to a GroupMe group app called “N— Lynching,” which included a calendar with days marked
for “daily lynching.” The man believed to be responsible for the incident was a student at the University of Oklahoma, who had been offered admission into Penn, and had access to the app. The reaction was a mix of fear and anger among Penn’s student body. One student told the website Billy Penn that the rise of racial slurs around campus was the result of Donald Trump winning the presidential election. Those kinds of incidents, according to the student, are “definitely an outright response to Trump winning.” Penn is Trump’s alma mater; he graduated from the Wharton Business School in 1968. But a majority of the student body was vocal about its dislike for the Republican during the protracted campaign. In October, staff at the school newspaper, the Daily Pennsylvanian, published a joint editorial with students from Wellesley College’s Wellesley News, that endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Clinton graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Penn students who participated in the walkout Thursday met at the College Green in the middle of campus, where black student leaders read a statement in a show of solidarity.

The owner of a retro-style diner in Northwest Philadelphia says his business has been unfairly targeted on social media after an allegation that one of his employees assaulted a Donald Trump supporter. The morning after Election Day, a woman decked out in Trump gear claimed a waitress at Trolley Car Diner in Mount Airy confronted her and yelled at her. When the customer returned the next day, the employee got physical, the woman claimed. “I was chatting on the phone with a friend, and a waitress started staring at me and giving me really dirty looks, and then she started yelling at me. [Saying] I was disgusting, get out, I’m so ignorant,” the woman, who refused to give her name, told 6ABC. But diner owner Ken Weinstein said the incident didn’t play out that way. “[The employee] said, “Good thing you’re not in my section,” he told Metro. The customer went to a manager, who apologized for the incident, and then she left. Weinstein said he later had a discussion with his employee, who “agreed she was wrong and felt bad about it,” he said. It was unclear whether the woman reported the incident to police. Weinstein said he thought the issue was settled, until the woman came back into the restaurant Wednesday without the Trump attire. She claimed the same waitress “checked,” or jabbed her. Weinstein said that
didn’t happen, either. According to the owner, the customer was seated in the front of the restaurant while the server worked in the back. Not long after entering the establishment, the customer walked over to the employee — who was waiting on a table — and stood right behind her. “The server spins around and makes contact with the customer,” Weinstein said, adding that his employee said “excuse me” when they knocked into each other. About half an hour later, Jack Posobiec, special projects director of Citizens for Trump shared the woman’s story on Twitter Wednesday to his 46,000 followers, claiming the victim is a friend. He also tweeted the diner’s phone number, which was retweeted more than 600 times. Weinstein responded to Posobiec using the diner’s Twitter account, saying he was aware of the incident and looking into it. That did not satisfy the storm of Trump supporters who lashed out forced Weinstein to shut down the diner’s Facebook page and temporarily disconnect its phone number. Weinstein said he thinks the incident was a “set-up.” “Clearly [the customer] came in looking for something,” he said. “It didn’t even take half-an-hour for her to contact a friend with 60,000 followers.” Weinstein said after the second incident, the customer emailed him, and he apologized. Shortly thereafter, Posobiec’s tweet was fired off, and Trump fans took to Twitter, Facebook and Yelp, which crowd-sources reviews of restaurants and other businesses. Weinstein said he has received death threats and promises to burn down the diner. An expanded version of this story can be seen at metro.us

SEPTA’s union workers might reject contract that ended six-day strike But it won’t immediately result in another strike, the union says. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev
alexis.sachdev@metro.us
Members of the Transportation Workers Union (TWU) Local 234 will vote Friday to approve the contract that ended a six-day strike that stopped transit services in the city earlier this month, but union officials said it may not earn enough support for ratification. Union President Willie Brown assured commuters Thursday that if the contract between Local 234 members and SEPTA isn’t approved, another work stoppage wouldn’t be immediate.
Brown told the Philadelphia Inquirer that instead, the union and SEPTA officials would return to negotiations to hammer out a deal. In a letter posted to TWU 234’s website Thursday, Brown urged the union’s 4,700 members to approve the contract. “As the person who negotiated the contract — and experienced firsthand the difficulties we faced — I know the agreement is a step in the right direction. The three best public employee contracts in Philadelphia are police, fire and transport workers. Police and fire have binding arbitration, we don’t. In order to keep pace, we have to use the strike weapon, which produced good results this time around. If you
A member of the Transit Workers Union Local 234 picket outside SEPTA Southern headquarters on the second day of their citywide strike, in South Philadelphia. CHARLES MOSTOLLER
saw SEPTA’s offer prior to the strike, you would have tossed it in the trash can. He warned against members who seek to
encourage “no votes through “misleading statements and bullying tactics. Brown told the Inky such opposition stems from internal
power struggles among some factions that ran a campaign against his leadership in the union’s September elections. “[These tactics] do
nothing but get our members fighting with one another at a time when unity is critical to our survival, Brown continued. “Just think. Starting on Jan. 20, 2017, Local 234 and other unions will be confronted by a U.S. president who is determined to destroy the labor movement and a Republican Congress ready to back him up. Trolley, bus and train workers in the city walked off their jobs at midnight Nov. 1 when their contracts with the transit authority expired. Both sides failed to reach a deal — clashing over pension plans and wage increases. A deal was struck early Nov. 7, after a judge denied SEPTA’s attempt to file an injunction.

METRO.US WEEKEND, NOVEMBER 18-20, 2016
Congress could undo Obama-era student loan relief The new measures, which lay out loan relief procedures for the students, were issued by the Department of Education just days before the election. The U.S. Congress could as soon as January start to dismantle President Barack Obama’s transformation of student loan rules by blocking freshly minted regulations designed to help students who say they were defrauded by forprofit colleges. The new measures are recent enough to allow the new Republican-led Congress to disapprove them under a 1996 law called the Congressional Review Act. It gives Congress 60 legislative days to reverse regulations with a simple vote. Republicans opposed the rule when it was proposed. Lamar Alexander, who chairs the Senate committee on education, is considering introducing a resolution that would overturn the so-called “Borrower Defense” rule, according to a spokeswoman. Even without a legislative reversal, presidentelect Donald Trump, who ran on an anti-regulation platform and started his own for-profit school, could instruct agencies to be more restrictive in how
Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate committee on education, GETTY IMAGES
they interpret this rule and others aimed at easing student loan burdens. Students who attended the now-defunct Trump University did not qualify for federal loans and are not eligible for loan relief. Trump is facing civil lawsuits alleging fraud related to the school. After he was elected president, the stocks of for-profit education companies rose. The borrower defense rule was inspired by the meltdown of Corinthian Colleges Inc. in 2015, according to Rohit Chopra, who worked on the Corinthian case at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and later moved to the Department of Education as a special adviser. In recent months, ITT Tech. Inc. has also folded, leaving students adrift. By law, students at struggling technical and professional colleges are already allowed relief on federal loans, but the new rule creates a path for getting that relief. Students
can make a fraud claim to the Education Department and then apply for a refund of federal money they borrowed and then paid to the school. It is the payment on a fraud complaint - sometimes made in the absence of any actual conviction that rankles Republicans. They also dislike that the rule leaves students free to file class action suits against the schools, instead of arbitrating all disputes, said Neal McCluskey, who follows higher education at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. It is not clear how many students - or how much in loans - would be affected by the new rule. The Education Department says it has already approved $250 million in relief to more than 15,000 applications from students who borrowed to attend Corinthian. The projected 10-year federal government expenses associated with the rules total $16 billion. REUTERS

Man killed in boiling Yellowstone pool was looking for hot soak A 23-year-old man who was scalded to death after falling into a boiling Yellowstone National Park hot spring in June was trying to test the temperature of the bubbling pool for a soak when he slipped in, according to a report on the incident. Colin Nathaniel Scott was seen by his sister, Sable, plunging into the hot spring near Pork Chop Geyser on June 7. His body was never recovered and according to the U.S. Department of the Interior report, likely dissolved in the highly acidic, 212 degrees Fahrenheit water. The department’s 60-page report, first made public this week following a Freedom of Information Act request by local Montana television station KULR, says that the brother and sister had left the park boardwalk and entered a dangerous area marked by warning

signs. “There’s a closure in place to keep people from doing that for their own safety and also to protect the resources because they are very fragile, Lorant Veress, a deputy park ranger, told KULR. “But, most importantly for the safety of people, because it’s a very unforgiving environment. Veress told KULR that Colin and Sable Scott were “specifically moving in that area for a place that they could potentially get into and soak. I think they call it Hot Potting. The report describes
the accident in grim detail, saying that Sable Scott had been videotaping the hike and recorded her brother’s death. The videotape was not included in the report and sections describing its contents were redacted. But rangers and other law enforcement personnel who responded to the scene after Sable Scott sought help described seeing her brother’s head and upper torso briefly floating face up in the hot spring, a crucifix around his neck. Only his wallet and orange-and-black flip flops, one of them badly melted,
were later found. A photo of the scene shows one of the shoes at the edge of the murky pool as steam rises from its surface. Each year some four million people visit Yellowstone, the first national park established in the United States. It encompasses some 3,500 square miles across Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. In 2014 a Dutch tourist was fined $3,000 after crashing a drone aircraft into Grand Prismatic Spring, a Yellowstone geothermal feature known for its brilliant colors caused by bacteria and minerals. Poll: Americans want Trump to focus on health care first The poll shows what priorities Americans would set on the new president, but it does not measure exactly what people want him to do.

Health care is the top issue Americans want Donald Trump to address during his first 100 days in the White House, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, an apparent rebuke of outgoing President Barack Obama’s signature reform, Obamacare. Some 21 percent of Americans want Trump to focus on the health-care system when he enters the White House on Jan. 20, according to the Nov. 9-14 poll, conducted in the week after the Republican won the presidential election. Jobs took second place with 16 percent of Americans hoping it would be Trump’s first agenda item, while immigration came third — picked by 14 percent of Americans, according to the poll. Some 11 percent picked race relations. A separate Kaiser Health Tracking Poll found in late October that most Americans want cheaper prescription drugs and access to larger networks of doctors and hospitals. Only a minority, 37 percent, want to repeal Obamacare altogether

and start over, as Trump has promised to do. “We can’t afford it -— that’s the problem,” said Daphne Saunders, 50, of LaFollette, Tennessee, who took the Reuters/Ipsos poll, explaining why she picked health care as the top issue. Saunders lost her employer-subsidized insurance when she left a job at a university in 2011 and has been paying roughly $300 per month since then for check-ups and prescription drugs to manage a heart condition and diabetes. She said the cheapest Obamacare plan would cost her $450 per month with a $50 co-pay every time she saw a doctor. “Those premiums should be more manageable,” Saunders said. “I would expect to pay no more than $100” per month. Obama’s 2010 Affordable Care Act has been credited with expanding coverage to as many as 25 million people. But the law has been weakened
through various legal challenges. Some of the biggest health insurers have pulled out of insurance exchanges after losing money, and insurance premiums have increased for those who do not receive government insurance subsidies. Obama said this week he would endorse a Trump plan if it improved the health-care system while insuring the same number of people. The poll also found that Americans have mostly accepted the result of the Nov. 8 election, after one of the most divisive campaigns in memory. Some 85 percent said they accept the results as legitimate, and 63 percent said they would support the new president. The 2016 campaign appears also to have mostly energized the public. Some 45 percent of Americans say they “feel more motivated” to vote in future elections, and 42 percent are more motivated to read and inform themselves about politics. REUTERS

Accused New York City bomber pleads not guilty Accused New York bomber Ahmad Khan Rahimi pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges that he set off an explosive device in September on a crowded city street, injuring 30 people. Wearing a dark blue jump suit, Rahimi, 28, shuffled slowly into federal court in Manhattan and had several coughing fits during the brief hearing. He suffered serious injuries in a shootout with police two days after the bombing. He spoke only once, when U.S. District Judge Richard Berman asked him to confirm that he intended to plead not guilty to an eight-count indictment filed on Wednesday. “Yes, sir, Rahimi said. Prosecutors have accused the Afghan-born

U.S. citizen of setting off an explosion in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood on Sept. 17. It did not kill anyone but hurt 30 people. The attack came hours after authorities say another pipe bomb planted by Rahimi went off along the course of a charity road race in New Jersey, although that detonation did not injure anyone. Federal prosecutors also say Rahimi left another bomb in Chelsea that did not go off and several explosive devices in a bag at a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In addition to the New York indictment, Rahimi faces charges from federal and state prosecutors in New Jersey. He was captured after a manhunt that ended when police officers dis-

covered him sleeping in the doorway of a bar in Linden, New Jersey. The confrontation left him with several gunshot wounds, delaying the filing of federal charges and forcing him to make his first court appearance in New Jersey from a hospital bed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Lewin told Berman that prosecutors had compiled video clips showing Rahimi’s move-
ments on the day of the bombings, including leaving his house carrying bags, walking on West 23rd Street where the device went off and planting the second bomb on West 27th Street. He also said the government has records showing Rahimi purchased bomb components online and DNA evidence tying him to the bombs. Lewin asked Berman to consider a trial date in the “late winter or “early spring, saying the amount of evidence in the case is relatively limited. Berman scheduled court dates for Dec. 19 and Jan. 31 but has not set a trial date. Rahimi’s court-appointed defense lawyers declined to comment after the hearing. REUTERS

German minister says Facebook should be treated as a media company Germany’s justice minister says he believes Facebook Inc. should be treated like a media company rather than a technology platform, suggesting he favors moves to make social media groups criminally liable for failing to remove hate speech. Under a program that runs until March, German authorities are monitoring how many racist posts reported by Facebook users are deleted within 24 hours. Justice Minister Heiko Maas has pledged to take legislative measures if the results are still unsatisfactory by then. Maas has said the European Union needs to decide whether platform companies should be treated like radio or television stations, which can be held accountable for the content they publish. “In my view they should be treated as

Under current EU guidelines Facebook and other social media networks are not liable for any criminal content or hate posts hosted on their platform. The state justice ministers meeting in Berlin called on the government to take swift action against hate speech on the internet. “We need concrete legislative measures,” said Hamburg’s Justice Minister Till Steffen and pressed Maas to start work on a draft law so that measures could be passed before federal elections next year. Celebrating 48 years of ‘The Nutcracker’ in Philadelphia
Artists of Pennsylvania Ballet dance George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” ALL PHOTOS ALEXANDER IZILIAEV
Artistic Director Angel Corella discusses making it magical for all this season. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue
jennifer.logue@metro.us
Since 1968, George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” has been a yearly tradition at the Pennsylvania Ballet. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky, audiences are swept away to the Land of Sweets and filled with the holiday spirit as they embark on an adventure with Marie and her prince. We chat with the Artistic Director Angel Corella about what to expect this season, making ballet accessible for kids with disabilities and how Philly compares to his hometown of Madrid. What has made “The Nutcracker” so popular over the years? I think it has to do with the music, the story, how involved it is with the celebration of dreams coming true. Especially in that period of the year — it is such a hopeful moment for all human beings. “The Nutcracker” is a representation of that. We’ve heard the music so much in so many different places — shopping malls and on the radio. Everywhere. It is so familiar that it has become a tradition. It also represents being able to share the holiday with
Angel Corella
your family — with beautiful music and beautiful dancing. We actually are doing 31 performances this year, and I am planning to go to every single one of them. Is there anything unique we can look forward to this season? We always bring something new even with a show that has been done before. Every dancer has a different approach and although they are the same steps, the ballet
could look completely different depending on who is dancing it. But, we are going to continue the tradition of George Balanchine’s “Nutcracker,” and every year just the dancing improves. Dancers can jump higher and they can hold positions longer — they can turn multiple turns … What inspires your work? I was really lucky to have danced with American Ballet Theatre for almost 20 years. At the same time, I guested with every company around the world, like the Royal Ballet in London or Australian Ballet. I’ve seen all of these companies, experienced all of these great choreographers and how the audience reacted.
performance” for kids with disabilities and their families. Want to talk about that? A lot of parents come to us and say that they are afraid to bring in their kids because they might make noise. So I think that this initiative is going to be great for parents that have someone with some kind of disability to be able to feel that the whole family can come to the theater and have a great time. My cousin has a baby with autism and she was always so afraid of bringing him to the ballet to see me dance because she thought he would make a lot of noise. And I said: “It’s OK. He came backstage, gave me a huge hug and wouldn’t let go. I mean it was a great experience. I think it is one of the closest cities that you can feel [like you’re in Europe]. ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ takes stage Shakespeare’s comedy showcases strong feminine perspectives. KYLE HILLER @MetroPhilly
letters@metro.us
In love, and in life, there are no truly happy endings. That’s what Shakespeare tells us in “All’s Well That Ends Well,” one of the late plays he produced. The rarely performed show will debut at the Broad Street Ministry on Nov. 30, running though Dec. 17. The Philadelphia Artists’ Collective will run an entire season of notso-familiar Shakespeare fare, and “All’s Well That Ends Well” sets the stage for strong female leads displaying the ultimate power of women. Artistic Director Dan Hodge said “All’s Well That Ends Well” is divergent from other Shakespeare plays. “It’s a great play in that it reads as an ensemble piece,” he said. “Everyone here carries a great deal of importance. There are four really strong roles for women. You’d only really have two, no more than three, for strong women [in a Shakespeare play].” Hodge also promised that there isn’t a bad part in it. “All’s Well That Ends Well” addresses per-

sonal space, forgiveness and redemption, but it doesn’t tie up the narrative in a neat bow. The dark comedy is uncomfortable, and it doesn’t apologize for that. The play is considered one of Shakespeare’s problematic efforts, and Hodge said this is one of the reasons he fell in love with it. “That makes it closer to real life,” he said. “We have an underestimated character who ‘saves the
world.’ And the most dynamic character is a young woman.” The cast is a collection of broken hearts, shuttered spirits and oppression fighters with potent feminine touch. The play’s heroine, Helena, can heal the ailing king of France away from death, but she struggles with making Bertram — the man she followed to Paris — fall in love with her. The bill warns of bittersweet
comedy that nuzzles with melancholic laughter. “All’s Well That Ends Well” is not afraid to layer the stage with disconcerting, albeit close to home, themes. “The bulk of the plays we do don’t often see the light of day,” Hodge said of the Philadelphia Artists’ Collective. “This one is a magical journey. It has perhaps his most complicated relationships between men and
women in all of Shakespeare’s works. There’s this weird thread of misogyny and the ultimate power of women,” which he noted is still a pressing conflict. Hodge says he hopes the play will have an impact. “I always want the audience enriched,” Hodge said, “but with this play I want to challenge the audience to consider the relationships in their lives. Who are the important
people in their lives and what do we owe those people?” Previews for “All’s Well” begin on Wednesday, Nov. 30, with opening night on Friday, Dec. 1. The show runs for a total of 13 performances through Saturday, Dec. 17. All shows are at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $25 (or $15 with student identification or under 25) by calling 215-551-1543 or visiting philartistscollective.org.

The performance is unique and they are speaking to the audience.” Krajewski will conduct

Part of bringing something new to the show each year is bringing in new guest artists to perform with Philly Pops. Guest singer and pianist Tony DeSare will be crooning some festive tunes. The Pops website describes him as “two parts Frank Sinatra, one

The concert series kicks off with a sold out show dedicated to military and first responders, which is another tradition for the holiday event. In addition to putting on a show that will encourage attendees to get in the holiday spirit, Krajewski and the musicians want to use the concert

Christopher Wheeldon brings ‘An American in Paris’ to Philly The Tony Award-winning choreographer/ director breathes new life into this classic story. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
When “An American in Paris” opens at the Academy of Music for its Philadelphia premiere on Nov. 22, its remix of the classic MGM musical starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron and featuring original songs by George and Ira Gershwin actually comes second in order
of importance to who directed it: Christopher Wheeldon. The Britishborn, world-renowned choreographer has crafted and adapted over 90 modernist ballets, and won the 2015 Tony Award for choreography for “An American in Paris,” which also marked his stage directorial debut. Plus, he’s in the Order of the British Empire to boot. Certainly we’ll discuss “An American in Paris,” but you have great ties with the PA Ballet in that you’re bringing “Rush” here in May 2017. You must love us.
Nick Spangler and the An American in Paris touring company MATTHEW MURPHY
I do. My affiliation with your ballet goes back a long way as I made “Swan Lake” there 12 years ago. That same production just had its premiere in Rome. It’s nice to see that “Swan” with life after Philly. I’ve had several opportunities for the PA Ballet to dance my work since then, with “Rush” — a one-act, plotless work meant to capture the energy of California — being my seventh time with your company. It’s brightly colored, high-energy, joyous dancing. Did you create a similar opportunity for “An American in Paris” or did it fall
into your lap? Was the MGM film wildly inspiring from the start? I was approached by its producers, who had acquired the rights to the MGM property [and] were interested in finding a director-choreographer rather than two separate entities. I wasn’t entirely sure that I was confident enough to make this my debut as a director. After I got paired up for a few directors I liked, but who ultimately weren’t interested, I took over. What was your immediate vision for it, one that could change our traditional viewpoint of the
whole Gene Kelly-Leslie Caron classic? Listen, I felt immediately close with my fellow collaborators, Craig Lucas and Rob Fisher, who were given the blessings of the Gershwins, and we quickly came up with this concept, an idea we felt that was more truthfully based in historical context. Immediately after World War II is when they made the movie, so we wanted to play to that honesty, maybe vent something that the Gershwins, Gene Kelly and Vincent Minnelli wanted to make back then but couldn’t. They were, maybe, in a way …
… Hampered by MGM and its vision of the sunny and bright? [Laughs] Yes. And the film is a beautiful work; amazingly joyous. We were confident though that we could make a work that still paid homage to the original and yet be our own version.

Eddie Redmayne is magic The Oscar-winner talks about cutting loose with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Eddie Redmayne assumed he’d be a Manhattanite when he signed up for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The film, a prequel to the “Harry Potter” movies, with a script from J.K. Rowling herself, is set in the Big Apple circa the 1920s. “My wife and I were so excited when we read the script. We were like, ‘We get to go to New York!’ And then we’re shooting in Watford,” says the Oscar-winner, referring to a town just outside of London. But making the film was still exciting. It meant the 34-year-old, known for very serious, demanding roles — “The Theory
of Everything,” “The Danish Girl” — got to play a wand-wielding wizard: the noted Newt Scamander, famous in the books and movies for writing a textbook cataloguing strange and magical creatures. In the film, Newt journeys to New York, where he winds up trying to save the city from an evil wizard on the loose. The unfailingly selfdeprecating Redmayne talks to us about acting with puppets and his very poor memory. With films like “Theory of Everything,” you had to field really hard questions from journalists about science. But you’ve read the “Potter” books. Has it been easier doing press for this film? I mean, I am so bad. My memory is the worst in the world. Any intense “Potter” questions I just deflect to Ezra [Miller, one of his co-stars]. There are these amazing wizard Wiki sites that you give
you all the information — or you can just talk to Ezra. He’s not just one of the brainiest people I know but is also the greatest “Harry Potter” fan you’ve ever met. Would you tend to just consult with him if you didn’t know something “Potter”-wise? I would genuinely consult him. There was one moment in the film early on where Newt is listening to [co-star] Samantha Morton giving a speech. She asks Newt, “Are you a seeker of truth?” I was supposed to say, “I’m more of a chaser” — completely missing that that’s a hard-core quidditch reference. It took Ezra coming up to me saying, [slips into a spot-on Ezra Miller impersonation] “Isn’t that greatest line you ever heard?” I was like, “Yeah! Why?!” [Laughs] It was good Ezra was there; he sort of salvaged my performance.
In this film you have another, very different challenge: You have to act with creatures, some of whom were puppets. You seem to have a different physical language with each of them. Oh good! I’m pleased you noticed! [Laughs] That was really important to me. One of the last things we shot was that scene down in the case. [Ed. Newt has a suitcase a la “Mary Poppins” which, inside, is a huge realm where all the beasts live.] I thought if I didn’t nail that the whole film would feel like fluff, because it would take you out of it. You’d say, “Oh, I don’t buy that.” So it was really important that it was grounded in something real, as magical and wonderful as it was. We worked quite hard on each relationship. Did you have any other unusual challenges you don’t normally get when making serious dramas? There was the Erumpent

dance [with a rhinoesque creature], which was a mating dance. That was kind of odd. How did you come up with that dance you do? That was a few days of personal humiliation — going down a YouTube hole for animal mating rituals, and then ignoring all of them and coming up with something that was absurd. I’d send the director some ideas and spend an excruciating four hours waiting for a response — one of which, I remember, being, “I’m not sure that’s seductive enough.” So thank god I added a bit more sex to my seduction dance.

28 WKND “The Edge of Seventeen” Director: Kelly Fremon Craig Stars: Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson Rating: R Now might not sound like a great time for a movie about a more-or-less privileged teenager fuming over nonsense teenage problems. But at least in temperament, Hailee Steinfeld’s Nadine is our spirit animal. The hero of “The Edge of Seventeen” is a titanic depresso, detached and scornful of the suburban merriment all around her. The only predicaments she will get into involve a) attempting to shed her virginity and b) being nonplussed, to put it mildly, when her bestie (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her dreaded older brother (Blake Jenner). Still, ignore that her disdain is only reserved for the tiny bubble of her home and high school; she’s the angry, unhappy, whip-smart loner we need right now. “The Edge of Seventeen” is the too-rare grouchy high school comedy, the kind where the token (not so) inspirational teacher is played by Woody

Harrelson. Nadine’s problems are silly, and the film knows it. But it understands it. Though he only produced it, “Seventeen” is very much in keeping with the work of James L. Brooks, whose films (best of all, “Broadcast News”) and shows (best of all, “The Simpsons”) traffic in characters who aren’t always likable, who use razor-sharp, sometimes loopy wit to deal with pain, who have arcs that seem traditional but are powerfully messy and
raw. They’re also always funny, perched somewhere between an unflinchingly honest drama and a live-action cartoon, sometimes veering one way, sometimes another. And so Nadine is a hot mess throughout, whether it’s picking fights with her harried mom (Kyra Sedgwick), firing off an ill-advised knockoff-Facebook message to her terrible crush or stewing in her own misery with lines like “I have to spend the rest of my life with myself.” She
learns lessons, but they tend to be about accepting that life is terrible or that adults haven’t figured life out, either. There’s a happy ending, but it’s not just about the world coming back to order. It’s about someone realizing that life is a shambles, that expectations must be dialed down, that happiness comes when you’re honest with the world. Right now, a week after the election, it seems like it could be the best teen movie ever. MATT PRIGGE

For “Whiplash, Miles Teller learned to play the drums. That, debatably, is nothing compared to what he did for “Bleed for This. The tale of Vinny Paz, a former boxer from Rhode Island who trained himself back into a world champion after breaking his neck, it required him to not only learn boxing but to also spend half the movie with a heavy “halo propping up his head.
On this ďŹ lm, you’re not just boxing but spending half the movie with a crazy thing on your head called a “halo.â€? The halo was something I knew was going to happen, but I didn’t know what it was going to be until I put it on. When I first put it on, we noticed it would move around a little bit. You can’t have that, because if it moves people realize it’s not screwed into your head and the whole thing falls apart. ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ Director: Ang Lee Stars: Joe Alwyn, Vin Diesel Rating: R “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” is one strange game changer. Usually when we’re gifted with cutting-edge tech — the kind that, like the new Ang Lee, may rejigger the very way we watch movies — it’s to present something big and flashy: alien worlds, crazy critters, big dudes with big guns. With “Billy Lynn,” though, even a layman’s explanation of the tech can read like stereo instructions. And the film itself is so subtle in what it’s doing that a defense will likely come off like a grad school paper. Perhaps this isn’t a movie for the masses but for eggheady academics. So here goes! For starters, “Billy Lynn” is presented in both 3-D and a “high-frame rate,” meaning, to put it very simplistically, the images look almost lifelike, not at all like a movie. But why use this for a war drama that’s half set at a football game? That’s even trickier to explain. Lee’s film hangs close to Joe Alwyn’s Billy Lynn, newly home from the Iraq War and stuck at a Cow-
Joe Alwynn plays a soldier who can’t stop living in the past in Ang Lee’s technically revolutionary “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” SONY
boys game honoring his troop. Throughout our protagonist keeps flashing back: to the heat of war, to the death of a philosophical comrade (Vin Diesel), to arguing with his antiwar sister (Kristen Stewart). Lee has talked about how the new technology grants us closer emotional access to the actors. But he might have been wrong. Good as newcomer Alwyn is, he and everyone else look strange onscreen. They can’t help but look like actors acting,
partly because Lee (“Life of Pi”) is simply not a naturalistic director. But you can defend it this way: The entire film is about unveiling the fraudulence of pageantry: the soldiers who pretend not to be traumatized; the conniving businessmen who want to profit off their heroism; the idea that war can become nationalistic propaganda. “Billy Lynn” is a fake-looking movie about fakery. It’s also, ironically, a better movie to think about than to watch. MATT PRIGGE

Things the Eagles must do to defeat the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday

against a Falcons defense very similar to Seattle’s in scheme and tendency. But there are differences — and the Eagles know the Seahawks have been watching their latest victory all week. Finding new ways to run the ball will be really important. “This group stunts in games and they’re fast; their linebackers are downhill. Safeties are involved. It’s still an eightman box, you know,” head coach Doug Pederson said. “You are going to see Kam Chancellor down around the box a lot, and he’s an extremely big, physical player. And that’s what they do. Then they try to take that run game away from you. They have been successful doing that.”

1Hustling Russell
After a slow start — perhaps due to lingering injuries — Wilson was not putting up the numbers many football fans were used to for the first half of the season. But backto-back wins against Buffalo and New England saw him throw for five touchdowns, no interceptions and over 600 yards combined in recent weeks. He’s rounding into form. “Every week, Russell Wilson has gotten healthier,” Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz

said. “Last week he looked like he was back to himself. I don’t know how much his knee injury is still bothering him, but it didn’t look like a lot.” Pressuring Wilson will be extremely important Sunday afternoon in the 4:25 kickoff (on CBS). “It’s not just a matter of beating the offensive line-

moderate because they still only posted 24 points and squandered potential points near the red zone — Philly needs to give the Seahawks disciplined and mature defense some different looks Sunday. If not it could end badly. “They’re pretty good, and one of the reasons is everyone knows they play a lot of middle field closed zone, and they’re playing more man now than what they used to play when they first started coming on the scene and coming on as a team,” Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “They know how teams attack them, and so the advantage that they try to play is, hey, here’s the 20 concepts over the last 10 years the teams run against this defense. If we can identify them quickly, then we can guard against them more effectively. And so that’s the advantage that they have.”

It seems like every week — whether the Eagles are coming off a win or a loss the week before — the story always seems to be “things will only get tougher.” After using an impressive defensive and rushing performance to best the high-powered Falcons 24-15 in Week 10, Philly is traveling west to the toughest place to play in football, against the NFC West leading 6-2-1 Seahawks. Seattle is fresh off an impressive win against another division leader in the Patriots. The Seahawks have a
notoriously high-quality defense, some big weapons in Jimmy Graham and Doug Baldwin, and a winning quarterback in Russell Wilson. Here are three things Philadelphia must do to earn its sixth win and stay alive in the NFC East:

76ers know what they’re doing with Embiid, right? Sixers coach Brett Brown says he’s just following doctors’ orders. ANDY JASNER @AndyJasner

Before the 76ers went out and accomplished a rare feat back on Wednesday — winning a basketball game — most of the questions centered around their biggest player. Not to mention their franchise cornerstone. Before getting to Joel Embiid, the Sixers did manage to place six players in double figures on their way to a 109-102 victory over the Washington Wizards. Jahlil Okafor led the way with 19 points in 20 minutes. The Sixers earned a second win after Monday’s debacle in Houston. Rookie Ben Simmons will likely be back sometime in January while Jerryd Bayless could return sometime this month. Help is on the way. This whole season — and the Sixers’ future — hinges on the 7-foot-2 Embiid. This has been stated before and it must be reinforced. The Sixers held out Embiid against the Wizards for mandated rest following two lost seasons due to injury. Embiid was scheduled to play Thursday night at Minnesota. While the crowd of 14,863 had plenty to cheer about, they didn’t get a chance to see the brightest light in what has been a bleak three-plus seasons. Asked why Embiid

wasn’t playing, coach Brett Brown was succinct. “I am a recipient of news from our medical staff and I follow the instructions, Brown said. “It’s really that simple. Embiid has been terrific in the short stints he has played this season. He’s one of only two rookies in the NBA this season with multiple doubledoubles along with teammate Dario Saric. Embiid is averaging 18.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game (through Wednesday) and he’s the first since Shaquille O’Neal in 1992-93 to average those numbers as a rookie. The No. 3 overall pick from the 2014 draft wants to play. He’s anxious to compete. But he never knows when he’ll be allowed to suit up. “You’re asking me questions I ask the sports

science people, Brown said. “It’s a very fluid thing. It’s not pre-ordained. It’s not scripted out for the month. It doesn’t work like that. Embiid remains on a 24-minute restriction per game. How many games he’ll play the rest of the season is anybody’s guess. Brown will continue to pepper the sports science staff looking for answers. Who can blame him? “I ask question after question after question, Brown said. “It’s my job to. And my real job is to look at Joel responsibly and not selfishly. We all see the difference that Joel Embiid makes when he’s in the game. So that information is something where we all talk about it, we all challenge it and ask why. But at the end of the day, it’s delivered in a very thoughtful, responsive manner.

We like the Lions at home, the Dolphins on the road and the Raiders in Mexico.
Jared Goff takes over at quarterback now, but there doesn’t seem to be an air of confidence about him around the league. The pick: Dolphins -1.5
Texans at Raiders (-5.5)
ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us
A look at the best bets around the league for Week 11.
Jaguars at Lions (-6.5)
Derek Carr has been one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in 2016.
The Jaguars are in a need of a confidence-booster after two tough losses in a row in which they outgained their opponents, but the Jags drew a daunting and reposed Lions squad for this Sunday’s game. Detroit is 4-0 in its last four games off a bye week, covering the spread in each of those contests. Traveling to hostile territory will also hurt the Jaguars’ chances at snapping their four-game
skid, as the Lions are 3-1 at home this year and 4-1 ATS in their last five at Ford Field. Matt Stafford might have some trouble with Jacksonville’s fifthranked pass stoppers, but RB Theo Riddick has emerged as a reliable all-purpose option (209 yards) despite some testing matchups with the Texans and Vikings in successive games. The pick: Lions -6.5
GETTY IMAGES
Dolphins (-1.5) at Rams Winners of four straight, including an upset victory in San Diego last week, the Dolphins travel up the California coast for another winnable game against the L.A. Rams. The 31 points Miami notched in Week 10 is a higher total than the Rams have put up in their last three games combined (29).
Division leaders clash in Mexico City on Monday night, but this game should be fairly one-sided. The Texans will get a heavy dose of Latavius Murray, who went off on the Broncos defense last Sunday to the tune of 114 yards and three TDs on 20 carries. Houston’s had trouble stopping the run this season, surrendering over 120 YPG on the ground. Houston’s 6-3 record is inflated as it is 3-0 against AFC South teams. The Texans are just 3-3 out of division this year, including a ghastly 0-3 mark on the road in non-division games. This makes Oakland the best bet of the week. The pick: Raiders -5.5
