3 things you need to know PENCE NOT OFFENDED BY COMMENTS TO HIM AT ‘HAMILTON’ SHOW
1
Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on Sunday he was not offended by rare and pointed comments made to him by a cast member of “Hamilton” after he attended the hit Broadway show. “I wasn’t offended,” Pence said on “Fox News Sunday,” declining to ask for an apology as President-elect Donald Trump had demanded. Pence acknowledged that many Americans were disappointed and anxious after Trump’s surprise Nov. 8 election victory following a raucous campaign, but he sought to reassure Americans that Trump would be a president “for all Americans.” After the show on Friday evening, Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays America’s third vice president, Aaron Burr, read a statement directed at Pence, who was in the audience, while standing in front of the cast in full costume. FRENCH CONSERVATIVES CHOOSE CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
2
French conservative voters were choosing their candidate on Sunday in a primary contest whose winner is seen as the likely victor in next spring’s presidential election. With the French left in disarray under the deeply unpopular President Francois Hollande, pollsters suggest that the center-right presidential nominee will meet and defeat the National Front’s eurosceptic, anti-immigration leader Marine Le Pen in a vote next May. Former prime minister Alain Juppe, a moderate conservative, had until recently appeared on track to win the nomination of the Les Republicains party and its center-right allies. But over the past week the contest has been transformed into a tight race between Juppe, former president Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Fillon, who served as prime minister under Sarkozy from 2007 to 2012. SOURCES: MERKEL TO SEEK FOURTH TERM AS GERMAN CHANCELLOR
3
Angela Merkel told top members of her party on that she wants to run for a fourth term as German chancellor in next year’s election, senior party sources told Reuters, after months of speculation about one of the world’s most powerful women. Despite a voter backlash over her open-door migrant policy, the conservative is seen as a stabilizing force in Europe amid uncertainty caused by Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president. Merkel told leading figures in her Christian Democrat (CDU) party about her intentions at a meeting to prepare for the September election, several participants said. REUTERS
SAY IT AIN’T SNOW! Bolaris’ Weather Watch
JOHN BOLARIS @weathersavior
As the song says, “What a difference a day makes, twenty-four little hours.” A shocking change slammed us about 36 hours ago. The first true arctic blast of the season collided with an unseasonably warm air mass on Saturday and it sent folks scrambling for their winter gear as temperatures in many locations soared into the lower 70s before the arctic hammer came down. The mercury plunged some 20 degrees in a blink of an eye as rain showers quickly changed over to sleet and then snow. This was the first snow of the season for a good portion of the North-
east and mid-Atlantic. The eastern slopes of the Berkshires, Catskills and the Poconos picked up several inches of snow. The Green Mountains of Vermont had over a half-foot and we still had leftover snow showers there in the morning, making travel difficult in the higher elevations, especially over 1,500 feet. Another strong sign of winter is the return of lake-effect snow as parts of western New York and western Pennsylvania were still getting hammered this morning with many places picking up over a foot of heavy wet snow. Boston, New York and Philly are battling strong, cold winds today as the mercury will hover in the 40s. However, with those winds gusting over 40 mph at times, it will feel dramatically colder. Expect limited sun-

shine and don’t be too surprised if you see a few flakes flying even in the major cities. An arctic dome will be on top of us on Tuesday and this will allow the wind to subside. So although readings will be
about the same as today, it won’t feel nearly as cold with lighter wind and more in the way of sunshine. The biggest travel day of the year will arrive on Wednesday and right now your planned travel should be nice and dry. However, by late Wednesday night we might see some light rain moving in, and if it gets in early enough, some of the higher elevations to the northwest of the metro region could see some wet flakes or sleet. This would occur mainly in the mountains. I’m not anticipating any type of icy problems in the cities. The rain will move out by later in the day on Thanksgiving, followed by a dry, nice Friday. Some signs indicate that a coastal storm could develop over the weekend, but right now confidence in forecasting such an event is low.

Christmas comes early to Boston as 47-foot Nova Scotia spruce arrives
The link between sugar consumption and increased body fat has long been known. Too much sugar in the diet promotes more insulin, the fat storing hormone, and thus more body fat.
The tree is a gift from the people of Nova Scotia, thanking Boston for helping out in Halifax 100 years ago. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
THE SLIMMING EFFECT OF STABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
R
ecently an Italian study of a sugar-blocking supplement showed significant weight loss results.1 The supplement, called ZuccarinTM, produced on average 20 pounds of weight loss, in the 90 day study.
The subjects lost 10% of their body weight and lost 3 times the weight of the control group, who were also on a 1300 calorie controlled diet, but not taking the Zuccarin supplement. In addition, the subjects also experienced healthier blood sugar levels after using Zuccarin. The explanation for the weight loss is that Zuccarin uses mulberry leaf extract and chromium to promote healthy blood sugar levels. Mulberry leaf has shown to reduce the absorption of sugars in the foods we eat. When these sugars are undigested, our blood sugar stabilizes and, according to experts, weight loss can occur.
TM
ZUCCARIN CHANGED MY LIFE “I read about Zuccarin in a magazine and since I have blood sugar issues, I started taking this supplement. I have taken it for 2 years now and can’t imagine being without it. I have seen my blood sugar levels stabilize and I have even lost 25 pounds of weight since starting. I have recommended Zuccarin to a lot of my friends and they are now experiencing the same good results as I have. I love this product.” Elenor C. Miami, FL.

Thanksgiving hasn’t arrived but Boston already has its Christmas tree. On Friday, the city received its annual gift of an enormous tree from the good people of Nova Scotia, Canada. Halifax, the provincial capital, sends down one of its homegrown trees every year as a gesture of thanks for the helping hand Bostonians gave it 100 years ago. On Dec. 6, 1917, a Norwegian supply ship collided with a French munitions vessel, causing a huge explosion, according to the Tree for Boston website. Nearly 2,000 people were killed, hundreds were wounded and 1,600 homes were destroyed. Boston came to the rescue, sending a relief train to assist survivors with food, water and medical supplies. Medical workers took over for Nova Scotia staff who had been working without rest. A year later, Halifax sent a Christmas tree to

Boston in thanks. Then in 1971, Halifax made the same donation and has not skipped a year since. This year’s tree is a 47-foot white spruce, originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, according to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. Just as residents and school children send off the tree in Nova Scotia, Santa Claus and Boston schoolchildren, who waved Canadian and Nova Scotian flags, welcomed the tree into Boston Common on Friday. Fans of the an-
nual tradition have been able to follow its voyage down from Canada on the tree’s website. Nova Scotia’s generosity does not come cheap. It spent nearly $200,000 last year to send its gift to Boston, CBC reported earlier this week. That included a $41,000 payment to the City of Boston and a $75,000 payment to ABC Boston for its exclusive tree-lighting broadcast. This year’s ceremony will take place at 7:55 p.m. on Dec. 1, near the Boston Visitors Center at 39 Tremont Street.

Federal authorities are searching for a man they’ve dubbed the “Spelling Bee Bandit,” who is believed to have struck four banks in Eastern Massachusetts over the past few weeks. Each time, he slides the teller a note written on the back of a withdrawal slip with a single word: “Robery.” Each time it is misspelled. Caught on surveillance video, the man is seen wearing wraparound sunglasses and a baseball hat or hooded sweatshirt. Over the past two weeks, he is believed to have robbed banks in Arlington, Reading, Burlington and most recently in Peabody, according to the FBI. All the banks are within about 20 miles north of Boston. He seems to prefer TD Bank, where three of the four robberies have

taken place. While he has never flashed a weapon, officials say the suspect has become increasingly aggressive. The suspect is described as in his late 30s or early 40s with dark hair and a slim build. He is around 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-2 and weighs about 160 pounds. At the time of a Nov. 13 robbery at the TD Bank, he was wearing jeans, a dark jacket, dark sneakers with
white soles, sunglasses and a white New England Patriots hat. Witnesses told the FBI that he has short hair, a thin face and a beard. The FBI wouldn’t say how much money he has stolen. It is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that could identify him and lead to his arrest. Anyone with information should call the FBI Boston Division’s Violent Crimes Task Force at 857-386-2000. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT
BRIEFS Donate to Metro’s Toy Drive In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Metro is once again launching Metro Magic, our annual toy drive for underprivileged children in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the toy drive, which was renamed in memory of the man who oversaw the project for more than four years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor in chief. Mr. Metcalf passed away in 2013 from colon cancer at the age of 50. Mr. Metcalf lit up every year as he saw the faces of children unwrap their holiday gifts. It is our goal to keep that magic alive. “Tony felt we should use the size and scale of Metro to help others and he used enormous dedication and force to execute the project and every year make children in need a little happier during the holiday season,” said Metro’s Chief Executive Officer Yggers Mortensen. Metro has created a wish list at the Target website that readers can access by going to Metro.us and clicking on the Tony’s Metro Magic story on the homepage. It’s good to receive a gift. India train derails, at least 120 killed, more than 150 injured At least 120 people were killed and more than 150 injured when an Indian express train derailed in northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, with the toll set to rise amid a scramble to locate survivors. Police officials said people were still missing as authorities tried to determine what caused 14 carriages of the train traveling between the northeastern city of Patna and the central city of Indore to suddenly roll off the tracks in Pukhrayan, 40 miles south of Kanpur city. Authorities said they were checking the condition of the tracks but would need to look further before concluding the cause of the derailment, India’s deadliest rail tragedy since more than 140 died in a 2010 collision in West Bengal. critical condition. With rescue teams still looking for victims amid the wreckage, the toll from the derailment could rise to become
India’s worst rail tragedy in this century. In what was probably India’s worst rail disaster, a train plunged off a bridge and into a river in 1981 in Bihar state, killing an estimated 500 to 800 people. India’s creaking railway system is the world’s fourth largest. It runs 11,000 trains a day, including 7,000 passenger trains carrying more than 20 million people. But it has a poor safety record, with thousands of people dying in accidents every year, including in train derailments and collisions. Suresh Prabhu, India’s railways minister, said in a tweet that the government would investigate the causes of the derailment and promised accountability with the “strictest possible action, as well as compensation for the affected passengers. SETTING UP SHOP Apparently Kanye West (who now says he would have voted for Trump if he’d voted) missed the memo about how endorsements are supposed to come before the election. Well, he may not have a working calendar, but I do — so here are my predictions for what will happen this week in politics. 1. NO “I” IN TEAM President-elect Trump was a kind of “Teflon Don” in his campaign; no matter what was flung at him it just didn’t seem to stick. Not true of his cabinet picks. Democrats and Republicans alike who are uneasy about his plans have already been throwing mud at the folks he’s selecting for his team, and this week it will really be flying. Doesn’t matter if it is deserved. For the opposition, this is all about slowing Trump’s momentum … especially since his early picks look pretty hard-line.
TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the book “My Year of Running Dangerously.” @tomforemancnn
2. WHITE CHRISTMAS: Even if you’re a candidate who made little effort to attract minority voters, heck — even if you outright offended some — it’s problematic to have white supremacists cheering too loudly when
you win. But they are sure hooting for Trump. He and his team have repeatedly disavowed the support of racists, but watch for him to get more and more pressure to explicitly and strongly denounce them — and not just from his foes. 3. WHATSAMATTA U? Did I miss something? Didn’t Team Trump tell us all along there was nothing wrong with Trump University? Lots of questions will be swirling in the new week after word he’s agree to pay $25 million to settle fraud claims against the defunct school. Best bet is we’ll be told he was just trying to get it out of the way so he can focus on redecorating, and after all what’s $25 million to a guy with so much more? Critics will say it’s proof of all they said about his business record during the race … which will make them feel better even if, in practical terms, now it makes no difference.

Elle King is so happy to be bluesy pop-rock’s new queen, she wants to marry everyone. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Elle King is having a very good year. Sure, you could count the fact that her bluesy debut album, 2015’s “Love Stuffâ€? went gold in 2016 and its top 10 single, “Ex’s & Oh’s,â€? earned her two Grammy nominations. More recently, King appeared with Dierks Bentley on the 50th anniversary broadcast of the Country Music Association Awards, where the pair won a Musical Event of the Year prize for their “Different for Girlsâ€? duet, as well as Stephen Colbert’s election night Showtime special. Yet, it is the fact that King met the man she calls “the love of her lifeâ€? earlier in 2016 that has inspired her the most; so much so that she started a live showcase, The Ministry Tour, where an exchange of vows is a centerpiece of each evening, with King acting as an officiator. (The couples originally got connected to King through her Instagram account.) “Who doesn’t want to get married by me in front of thousands of people?â€? she laughs. How has conquering the world with “Love Stu â€? changed your life so drastically? Totally changed. It was a slow climb for “Ex’s & Oh’s,â€? and that song hit in America while I was in Europe. I called my mom, and I think I was a little blue about
something, and she was like,“Baby, you’re in for a big surprise when you get home. This past year has been outstanding — real “dreams come true shows where everybody knows every word to every song. Still, this tour I’m doing now is the last hurrah for “Love Stuff. Have you just had enough of it? No, I’m getting ready to make the next record. I have more music in me, and there’s an evolution from what I did with that one. Just for fun, we throw some of the new songs in on this show. I will, however, never get bored of “Ex’s & Oh’s. Do you know why people connect to you on what seems like such a deep level? I think, I hope, that it’s me — though I don’t want to come off as egotistical. I grew up as not always the most popular girl and not always the prettiest girl, and I just said “Screw it. I did what I wanted, be myself and hoped people liked what I had to offer. I never changed that. I make music true to how I feel. People I know who respond to that, who tell me they respond to that, often tell me that they feel as if we’re friends or could be best buds with a real connection. Speaking of best buds and connection, you’re engaged. We met in January, started hanging together immediately where we never left each other’s side. We got engaged two weeks later. He’s my best friend and has changed my view on everything. We’re absolutely in love;

so much so that I tried to figure a way of celebrating that love with my fans. So I started marrying them — that’s the basis of the whole tour. Are you guys having a traditional wedding where your dad (comedian Rob Schneider) walks you down the road? My stepdad will walk me down the aisle because he’s the man who raised me. My betrothed is from Scotland, so we’re not having a church wedding. It’s going to be a small wedding in New York, a beautiful celebration with a dance party. Hoorah. Do you know all the technicalities of marrying people? I do. I have done in several times in the past, and know most of what aspects of it vary from state to state. I married friends in Utah and New Mexico in the past. It’s already nerve-racking getting married, and being onstage just adds to that edge. What would you say to those looking to marry unconventionally? It’s just declaring your love in front of thousands of screaming people. It’s easy. I tell people in the audience to scream louder. It’s love. Why not get everybody to celebrate, to be a part of it?

Lawrence Levy says people always ask him three things after they discover he used to be the chief financial officer of Pixar. “They want to know was it was like to work for Steve Jobs, they want to know why I left Pixar and the final question is — and I am paraphrasing a little here — but it’s ‘Do I have to be a jerk to succeed?’ says Levy, the author of the book “To Pixar and Beyond. Levy wants to assure everyone aspiring to work in the world of tech that it’s not necessary to be an awful person to thrive. “My answer is always, ‘No, you don’t have to be a jerk to succeed,’ he says. “But it is possible to succeed if you are a jerk. to carry yourself with dignity, that is a choice you can make. Here are his three survival tips.
A shift in thinking The first step is to ignore the often incorrect stereotype of what Silicon Valley is really like. “We do build up that myth that you have to be a jerk if you run a company, Levy notes. “Sometimes there is a bravado that is built up, but there’s nothing that says you can’t be a decent human being that’s trying to do good in the world. Levy tried to channel that just after he arrived at Pixar in 1994. Before the spectacular success of “Toy Story the following year, Pixar’s employees were disenchanted and struggling with low morale. Levy writes that he spent his first few weeks listening to employees and starting conversations with workers about how the company could turn
things around.
There will be growing pains Startups are notorious for working their employees hard and sometimes it can be hard to know if sticking around is worth it. “The No. 1 question you should be asking is ‘Are you benefiting [from your job] in some way?’ says Levy. “It may not be the perfect environment, but it should be balanced with the question of ‘Is this serving me in some way?’
Remember there is life beyond the office Working 24/7 will cause you to lose perspective. “The key challenges in life are not how busy we are or how hard we are working, says Levy. “If we want to feel good about ourselves, it’s not enough to invest in outer things. We have to make investments as well in our inner life. That’s why Levy urges all employees to make sure they take the time — even if it just a few minutes a day — to either meditate or do something else that will help them stay present. The hectic tech lifestyle “is culturally based, and we can shift those paradigms to something healthier, says Levy.

NFL Week 11 roundup: Vikings end losing streak How did some anticipated Week 11 match ups play out in the NFL?
3
This win was extra sweet for Tom Brady.

Things we saw as Pats made San Francisco feel like home 1
The Patriots showed Sunday they have a short memory, returning to winning ways. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
There’s no place like home, and Tom Brady made sure that his first game ever against his hometown 49ers on the road went according to plan. Though the Patriots led just 13-10 at the end of the third quarter, they made sure to save the best for last, beating the 49ers, 30-17. Brady, with enough friends, family and fans watching to make San Francisco’s rainsoaked Levi’s Stadium feel like a home game, showcased his newfound elusiveness in the pocket and hit Danny Amendola for a 5-yard touchdown that gave New England some breathing room to begin the fourth quarter. Two drives later, Brady hit rookie Malcolm Mitchell for a 56-yard touchdown that put the game out of reach. Brady finished with 279 passing yards and four touchdowns. Running back LeGarrette Blount ran all over a historically bad 49ers rushing defense for 123 yards.
No Gronk, no problem?
With Rob Gronkwoski on the field, the Patriots offense is on another level. But Gronkowski and Chris Hogan missed Sunday’s game, which meant others had to step up. Julian Edelman proved to be Brady’s favorite target, hauling in eight of 17 targets for 77 yards and a touchdown. But there were two less-familiar faces in on the action on Sunday. Dion Lewis made his return to the field for the first time this season after a second surgery on his knee and showed the same quickness from last season on his way to 49 all-purpose yards in limited action. And rookie Malcolm Mitchell, who came into the game with 95 receiving yards on the season, caught four balls for 98 yards including one 54-yard touchdown that showcased his straight-line speed.
not 2Still sharp enough
The Patriots defense looked alive at times, but there’s still plenty the players must show in order to prove they can be depended on. On Sunday, the defense sacked Colin Kaepernick five times, totaling a loss of 29 yards. Still, Kaepernick carved them up during a late second-quarter touchdown drive for 92 yards in eight plays that cut the Patriots lead to 13-10. He then
marched them 75 yards over 12 plays for another touchdown in the fourth quarter. Patriots defense: making bad quarterbacks great again.

Clean up the mistakes
The 49ers committed 10 penalties for 68 yards on Sunday, but the Patriots had a few themselves. Up 10-3 in the second quarter, LeGarrette Blount rumbled out of the backfield 35 yards and into the end zone. The hurt was on in San Francisco — except Nate Solder got caught holding and the touchdown was called back. Now second and 11 from the 49ers 45-yard line, Brady, faced with pressure, threw the ball away to avoid the sack — except it was ruled intentional grounding. That pushed the ball back 10 more yards and set the Pats up with a 3rd-and-21 from their own 45-yard line. They didn’t convert and were forced to punt — and the 49ers took the ball 92 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Patriots best defense is Tom Brady. The more their offense is on the field, the less time for their defense to give up points. Yes, they are asking a lot out of their offense right now. They can get away with those mistakes against the 49ers – but against playoff teams that won’t be so easy.
Minnesota 30, Arizona 24 The Vikings (6-4) ended their four game skid by playing the football that had gotten them to 5-0. Despite gaining just 217 yards of offense, a 100yard interception return by Xavier Rhodes and a 104-yard kickoff return by Cordarrelle Patterson ensured they had enough point to top Arizona. Buffalo 16, Cincinnati 12 LeSean McCoy opened the scoring with a sevenyard touchdown run, but had to leave the game with a thumb injury. The Bills (5-5) didn’t blink, finishing with 183 team rushing yards to stop their three game skid. The news wasn’t as good for the Bengals, who lost A.J. Green to a hamstring injury and dropped to 3-6-1 on the season. Pittsburgh 24, Cleveland 9 The Steelers (5-5) ended a four game losing streak on the road in Cleveland. Their much maligned defense sacked the Browns (0-11) eight times and forced two turnovers. Le’Veon Bell had 146 rushing yards and another 55 receiving.
The Giants are now firmly in second place in the NFC East.
Dallas 27, Baltimore 17 The Cowboys (9-1) overcame a slow start to rack up 417 yards on the NFL’s leading defense Two touchdowns to begin the second half turned a 10-10 tie into a 24-10 Cowboys lead that held up. Dak Prescott (27-for36, 301 yards, 3 TDs) now has two straight 300-yard games. Detroit 26, Jacksonville 19 After recovering a fumble, Tavon Wilson intercepted Blake Bortles at midfield on the game’s final play to seal the victory for the Lions (6-4). With the win, Detroit stays in first place in the NFC North. Indianapolis 24, Tennessee 17 While it was the Titans (5-6) who built a 21-0 lead
GETTY IMAGES
early last week against Green Bay, this week they fell behind by the same margin against the Colts (5-5) and weren’t able to complete the comeback. Tampa Bay 19, Kansas City 17 While the rest of the NFL was experiencing kicking troubles due to the weather, Roberto Aguayo had no such issues in Kansas City, nailing all four of his field goal attempts and an extra point for the Buccaneers (5-5) third straight win. New York (Giants) 22, Chicago 16 The Giants (7-3) won their fifth straight while trying to keep pace with the Cowboys atop the NFC East. New York scored the final 16 points after falling behind 16-9.
