3 things you need to know DRIVER IN TENN. BUS CRASH CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE

1

The driver of an elementary school bus that crashed in Tennessee, killing five children and sending more than two dozen to the hospital, has been charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving, police said. Speed appeared to have contributed to the crash, which left the bright yellow bus mangled and nearly severed in two, Police Chief Fred Fletcher said. Johnthony Walker, 24, was driving the bus full of students home from Chattanooga’s Woodmore Elementary School on Monday when it veered off a road about a mile from the school, flipped onto its side and smashed into a tree and telephone poll, Fletcher said. Walker was driving on a narrow winding road at well above the posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour when he lost control, according to police. REUTERS

TRUMP DROPS PROMISE TO PROBE CLINTON ON EMAIL, CHARITY

2

Donald Trump will not pursue investigations against Hillary Clinton over her family’s charity or her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, MSNBC said, dropping a threat made to his Democratic rival during the bitter presidential campaign. Republican Trump had vowed to jail Clinton and crowds at his rallies chanted “Lock her up.” But he now believes she “has been through enough,” MSNBC reported on Tuesday, citing an unidentified source. Addressing the report in an interview with MSNBC, senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway indicated it was correct. “Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don’t find her to be honest or trustworthy, but if Donald Trump can help her heal then perhaps that’s a good thing,” she said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program. EX-NBA STAR RODMAN CHARGED WITH DRIVING WRONG WAY ON HIGHWAY

3

Former pro basketball star Dennis Rodman has been charged with driving the wrong way on a California highway and forcing another car to swerve into a concrete dividing wall before he left the scene, prosecutors said. The Orange County district attorney’s office said it brought the hit-and-run charges against Rodman on Monday in connection with the July 20 incident in Santa Ana. The case represents the Hall of Fame player’s latest brush with the law. Rodman, a former NBA forward with the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls, drove his sport utility vehicle the wrong way on Interstate 5 in the carpool lane, prosecutors said in a statement. Prosecutors did not say whether the occupants of the other vehicle were injured. REUTERS

PennPIRG’s Michael Roles speaks at a press conference at City Hall, along with City Councilman Derek Green, right, and Dr. Albert Hsou, left, to warn consumers about the dangers posed by recalled toys that can still be found for sale. CHARLES MOSTOLLER

Just in time for the holidays: Potentially harmful toys to avoid From a beanbag to a glockenspiel, an annual report details specific toys that are available online despite their dangers. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

Just a few years ago, the hottest holiday toy was the Hoverboard, the selfbalancing scooter that creates an illusion of floating through air. But the brand-name device was pricey, so many people turned to the internet for knockoffs. “We saw a real demand for the Hoverboard, which when it came out was very expensive,” recalled Philadelphia City Councilman Derek Green. “As we got into the beginning of the year, we began learning of all these incidents with [fake] Hoverboards

that caught on fire and caused damage to households across the country” because people purchased the lower-quality versions online at a steep discount. On Tuesday, Green and the consumer watchdog group PennPIRG appeared at City Hall to advise the public about this year’s crop of toys that may pose a threat to children’s health. “Trouble in Toyland,” a new report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, warns about toys that may still be available for sale online despite being recalled by their manufacturers. The toys may pose choking hazards, overheat because of poorly manufactured batteries, or contain lead paint. Examples include a beanbag chair recalled in 2015 after two children opened the zipper, crawled inside and suffocated. It’s still available for sale online, said

“Don’t trust that they are safe just because they are available for sale.” Roles

PennPIRG Field Director Michael Roles. U.S. PIRG is the national organization. Another example of a potentially hazardous toy was a “monkey glockenspiel,” a xylophone-style instrument that was recalled by the manufacturer in February when lead paint was found on a pink-colored key. “We all thought lead was out of our toys,” said Roles. “Don’t trust that they are safe just because they are available for sale.” Roles urged consum-

ers to check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s online database of recalled toys if they have any concerns about new products. “In the ’70s, ’80s early ’90s, if a toy was recalled, you wouldn’t have been able to buy it, because a store would take it off the shelf,” Green said. “Now in the internet age, people have that construct that if something is for sale, it must be safe.” Green pointed out the lead paint on the glockenspiel as a particularly shocking item. “I can be making sure my house is repainted, looking for paint chips, changing the pipes to make sure no lead is leaking into my water,” he said. “But then lead gets brought into the household through a gift that a grandparent bought, not knowing that the paint has lead that could rub off. I think this is something that it is important for parents to know.”

Disgraced former Attorney General Kathleen Kane faces a stint in jail, though she is appealing her recent conviction on perjury charges. But the so-called “good ole boys” network at the Attorney General’s office that she claimed persecuted her after she discovered their pornographic and racist emails may not face any punishment at all, acting Attorney General Bruce Beemer has decided. Beemer on Tuesday released a report ordered by Kane about his office’s review of all pornographic and racist emails swapped by employees of the AG’s office dating back to 2008. No senders or recipients of the emails, which included “judges or senior government officials,” will be publicly identified, he said. The report includes only descriptions of the emails. Most emails described in the report were common pornography, while others were mocking or cruel, such as an email sent by one prosecutor to 12 people from the website “People of Walmart,” which features photos with snarky captions. Other emails were explicitly racist and mocked other ethnicities, including African-Americans, Indians and Mexicans. One email, sent by a retired employee of the AG’s office to 67 recipients, including a judge, took aim at the first lady. It included a picture of an African woman wearing tribal garb and stated, “It’s the next thing taxpayers will have to pay for! MICHELLE OBAMA’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION!”

Beemer said he does not feel the emails require any immediate disciplinary action, although he said some high-volume senders’ actions will be reported privately to their current employers. “Much of the material identified as inappropriate by the firm [special prosecutor Douglas Gansler’s law firm] was not inappropriate at all,” a news release from the AG’s office stated. “Many of those identified were not lawyers or law enforcement officers, meaning they fell outside the primary charge of the email review, which was to determine whether there were conflicts or collusion that disrupted the administration of justice.” Philadelphia City Councilwoman Cindy Bass disagreed with Beemer’s assessment. “I’m very disappointed that it’s not taken seriously,” she said. “These are people who are supposed to bring justice, and I just cannot see how they can do that if they find this particular type of material entertaining.” She added that no one would know about the emails if it weren’t for Kane. “You can say whatever you want to say about Kathleen Kane, but I seriously doubt if she had not viewed these materials and been made aware of them, then this would never have been brought to light,” Bass said. Kane appointed Gansler in December to search the emails. Gansler, who found about 12,000 inappropriate emails on servers at the AG’s office, declined Tuesday to comment on the report. “We’ve been instructed by the Office of the Attorney General not to comment,” he said. Out of those 12,000, about 4,700 were linked to 38 high-volume senders of inappropriate emails and 13 senders identified as “judges or senior government officials,” according to Beemer’s office.

“I’m very disappointed that it’s not taken seriously.” Philadelphia City Councilwoman Cindy Bass

Police and federal authorities are searching for the motive behind a manila envelope being sent to a Center City man that detonated and flung shrapnel into his body, seriously injuring him. The victim, whom authorities did not identify, was hospitalized in critical condition. He is reportedly a 60-yearold man who is active in the gay community and had a rainbow sign in his window with the words “Love Trumps Hate. Authorities said they do not know why the unknown bomber targeted the victim, who lives on the 1800 block of Pine Street. “It was constructed so when you open the envelope, it detonated, said Sam Rabadi, special agent in charge of the Philadelphia ATF field office, at a news conference on Tuesday. “Upon being opened by the victim, it exploded.

ISTOCK

Police were called at 4 a.m. Tuesday with reports of an explosion at the victim’s home. The victim is hospitalized at Jefferson University Hospital with wounds from shrapnel to his hand, torso and severe injuries to his left hand, police said.

The explosion caused “substantial damage to the victim’s residence and appliances nearby, but didn’t cause structural damage to the building, Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan said at the news conference. “We wanted to assure the community that this

is an isolated incident. There is one device, he said. “They should feel safe and secure tonight. Authorities do not believe the incident was terrorism-related, saying it appeared that the bomb was specifically intended for the victim who opened it. There is “no nexus to suggest it’s related to any particular group or any ideology, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said. Authorities do not yet know if the package was transported through the U.S. Postal Service or if it was placed at the victim’s home by the bomber. Police said the victim had just returned from being out of town for a few days and thought the envelope contained medication when he opened it. Anyone with information about the source of the explosive is being urged to contact police. SAM NEWHOUSE

Philly cop accused of shooting son in dispute over car The off-duty officer felt his son had been disrespecting him during the Labor Day confrontation, authorities said. ALEXI FRIEDMAN @MetroPhilly

alexi.friedman@metro.us

A 25-year veteran of the Philadelphia police force faces a charge of attempted murder, accusing him of shooting his adult son in the back in September during an argument over use of the family car, authorities announced Tuesday. Dorion Young, 46, also faces counts of assault and reckless endangerment in connection with the Labor Day shooting in his home on the 2700 block of Taunton Street. One of the shots glanced off Young’s shoe but he was not injured, authorities said. Young has been suspended for 30 days and may soon be fired, Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams said during a news conference. There was no available Information about whether Young had obtained an attorney who

Dorion Young allegedly shot his son in the back during an argument in his Taunton Street home in September. PHILADELPHIA DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICEPHOTO

could comment on the charges in his behalf. Young was in his home with his two sons and his oldest son’s girlfriend on the day of the incident, the district attorney said. The off-duty officer quarreled with his oldest son because he felt the younger man had been disrespectful, according to the charges. Young allegedly pulled from his pocket a loaded .40-caliber pistol. The gun was his personal firearm, not his service weapon. “You my son and you aren’t going to keep disrespecting me,” he allegedly yelled as he waved the gun in the air, according to the DA’s news

release. Young called the police, then broke down a door to confront his son, who had retreated to another room. He fought with his son, who was again retreating, when Young fired the two shots, prosecutors said. Young was apparently on the floor at the time, sitting up with his legs outstretched. Young’s son was taken to a local hospital. Information about his condition wasn’t available. “If you are a Philadelphia police officer, elected official or private citizen; you cannot use your gun to try to end an argument,” Williams said in the news release.

Donate to Metro’s Toy Drive In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Metro is once again launching Metro Magic, our annual toy drive for underprivileged children in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the toy drive, which was renamed in memory of the man who oversaw the project for more than four years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor in chief. Mr. Metcalf passed away in 2013 from colon cancer at the age of 50. Mr. Metcalf lit up every year as he saw the faces of children unwrap their holiday gifts. It is our goal to keep that magic alive. “Tony felt we should use the size and scale of Metro to help others and he used enormous

NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

dedication and force to execute the project and every year make children in need a little happier during the holiday season,” said Metro’s Chief Executive Officer Yggers Mortensen. “I am proud to continue this project in honor of Tony and I hope all our readers, suppliers and members of the Metro team will

help to make this yet another great Metro Magic year.” Metro has created a wish list at the Target website that readers can access by going to Metro. us and clicking on the Tony’s Metro Magic story on the homepage. From there, just choose the toys you wish to donate, pay online using Target’s secure payment system, and your gifts, along with your name attached, will be delivered to Metro’s offices in each city. This season, we hope you will remember the children who will spend the holidays in shelters or who may not have gifts to open. Even one small gift can make a big difference in a child’s holiday season. It’s good to receive a gift. It’s better to give one. METRO

Suspect in Texas police killing was angry over custody battles The detective was shot twice in the head as he wrote a traffic ticket on Sunday morning. Authorities said the assailant stopped his car behind Marconi’s vehicle, walked up and shot the detective through the window. A 31-year-old man suspected in the ambush killing of a police detective in Texas has apologized to the officer’s family and said he “lashed out” in anger after several custody battles. Otis McKane was arrested on Monday for the killing of 50-year-old Benjamin Marconi, a 20year veteran of the San Antonio force who was gunned down as he sat

in his squad car outside the department’s headquarters. As he was escorted by officers outside the building late on Monday, McKane told reporters he had been involved in several custody battles. “I just want to see my son … The situation I was in, I lashed out at somebody who didn’t deserve it,” he said, without saying directly that he killed Marconi. Asked by reporters whether he had any message for the slain officer’s relatives, McKane replied: “I’m sorry.” Marconi was one of four officers shot in the line of duty in Texas, Missouri and Florida on Sunday. A total of 57 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed by gunfire so far this year, a 68 percent increase from the same period in 2015. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus

McManus said McKane talked to a clerk inside the otherwise deserted building, then suddenly said “never mind” and left. In a statement, Marconi’s family thanked police and the local community “for the outpouring of prayers, support, and love we have received.” REUTERS

said McKane is responsible for the detective’s “cold, calculated murder.” Police used a photo of the suspect’s car and surveillance video to track down McKane, who was arrested without incident on Monday while he was in a vehicle with a woman, who was not identified, and a 2-yearold child. McKane got married about seven hours before his arrest, according to records obtained by the San Antonio Express-News, and his bride owned the car in which he was arrested, the newspaper reported. The video showed McKane pacing in front of the doors of police headquarters about four hours before the shooting. He spoke with someone on the intercom, police said, and then he walked out about 20 seconds later.

Obama grants 79 prison sentence commutations President Barack Obama reduced the sentences of another 79 federal prisoners by exercising his commutation power, the White House said on Tuesday, bringing to more than 1,000 the number of prisoners whose sentences were commuted under Obama. The prisoners are mainly nonviolent drug offenders, a group the White House had hoped to reach through criminal justice reform bills that have stalled in Congress. Obama, with the help of pro bono lawyers and the Justice Department, announced in 2014 that he would use clemency and commutation powers to right the wrong of sentences he saw as overly harsh and unfit of the crime. “While we are continuing to push for criminal justice reform, and that important piece of business remains unfinished,

I’m pleased to say the president has not just met but exceeded what he set out to do in 2014 by reinvigorating the clemency project,” said White House Counsel Neil Eggleston. Eggleston said the vast majority of the more than 1,000 prisoners have served far more time than the sentence they would have received if they had committed the same crime today. Eggleston said he anticipates additional grants before Obama leaves office in January. The Obama administration was flooded by petitions for clemency after the 2014 announcement. There were about 6,000 pending petitions for drug offenders as of Aug. 31. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and the Justice Department made a commitment to review all of those petitions by the end of the administration.

Almost half the world will be online by end of 2016; poorer countries will lag, report shows By the end of 2016, almost half of the world’s population will be using the internet as mobile networks grow and prices fall, but their numbers will remain concentrated in the developed world, a United Nations agency said on Tuesday. In the world’s developed countries about 80 percent of the population use the internet. But only about 40 percent in developing countries and less than 15 percent in less-developed countries are online, according to a report by the U.N.’s International Telecommunications Union (ITU). In several of Africa’s poorer and more fragile countries, only one person in 10 is on the internet. The offline population is more widely female, elderly, less educated, poorer

and lives in rural areas, said the union, a specialized agency for information and communication technologies. Globally, 47 percent of the world’s population is online, still far short of a U.N. target of 60 percent by 2020. Some 3.9 billion people, more than half the world’s population, are not. ITU expects 3.5 billion people to have

access by the end of this year. “In 2016, people no longer go online, they are online. The spread of 3G and 4G networks across the world had brought the internet to more and more people, the report said. Telecoms and internet companies are expanding as more affordable smartphones encourage consumers to browse the internet, causing demand to grow for data-heavy services. However, less-developed countries — LDCs — still trail the rest of the world. “Internet penetration levels in LDCs today have reached the level enjoyed by developed countries in 1998, suggesting that the LDCs are lagging nearly 20 years behind the developed countries, the report said. Billy Bob Thornton: Still bad The legend talks about waiting to do “Bad Santa 2” and that time he was pitched “Sling Blade 2.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Billy Bob Thornton didn’t want a bad “Bad Santa 2.” One reason the filmmakers waited 13 years since the original instant classic — in which he plays a foul-mouthed, alcoholic, bracingly miserable thief who poses as Kris Kringle in order to steal loot — was they didn’t want to fall into the usual sequel traps. He wanted the follow-up to be similar but different. This time, Willy is in Chicago, reuniting with not just Tony Cox’s Marcus and Brett Kelly’s nowgrown Thurman Merman,

but also his estranged mother (Kathy Bates), who’s also a crook. Thornton, 61, talks to us about not treating the movies as comedies, the reason Lauren Graham doesn’t return and that time someone wanted to make a sequel to “Sling Blade.” The original created this cottage industry of “Bad” movies: “Bad Grandpa,” “Bad Teacher”… They got “Bad” everything now. My friends and I sit around coming up with different ones: “Bad Lawn Equipment Salesman.” One thing I’ve always liked about the first “Bad Santa” is Willy feels like a real guy. There’s a lot of dive bars across the country filled with people as miserable as he is. Yeah. And that’s the thing about doing a comedy: To make a character genuinely funny or interesting, GETTY you have IMAGES

Billy Bob Thornton’s cantanekrous Willy, right, reunites with Brett Kelly’s Thurman Merman, now in his early 20s, in “Bad Santa 2.” JAN THIJS, BROAD GREEN PICTURES, MIRAMAX

to play it straight. I play this part the same way I played the part in “Monster’s Ball” or “A Simple Plan” or “Sling Blade.” You don’t go out there and try to be a funny guy; you play it straight. You’ve mostly avoided sequels throughout your career. Yeah, I have. This one seemed to make sense to me. Not only did I want to play the character again, but it was a natural for a sequel. Some movies just aren’t. I’ve been asked to do a sequel to “Sling Blade.” I was like, “Well, how the hell would you do that?” What could possibly be the plot of “Sling Blade 2”?

I have no idea. First of all, he would either be in a mental institution the whole movie, or he would be let out again and kill somebody else. [Laughs] At that point it would become like “Friday the 13th” or something. One reason I’ve always liked “Bad Santa” is because, as I got older, I realized that for some people, the holidays are the worst time of the year. It’s very easy to get into a melancholy state during Christmas. Because you remember the joy of being a child and how magical Christmas was. If I didn’t have kids, there’s no telling how I’d feel at Christmas. But at least through them I can enjoy it.

One of the surprises this time is there’s a scene with Octavia Spencer. I think a lot of people don’t know she was in the first. Her life has changed a lot since 2003. It was very gracious of Octavia, at her stature now, to come back and do that little cameo for us. We had to have those moments in there that reprised something from the original. Frankly, we missed Lauren Graham. I loved working with Lauren, she was so good in the first one. But to bring her into this one, it would have been forced. We would have had to concoct some cockamamie story about how she got to Chicago, and it wouldn’t have

worked. It certainly wasn’t because we didn’t want her in the movie. That would have been amazing. Do you think you’ll wait another 13 years for another one? If this one’s successful, they’ll do it a little sooner this time. If they wait another 12 or 13 years it will be called “Old Folks Home.” [Laughs] They’ll have me on a walker trying to rob the nursing home. Or it could be that Willy finally, at long last, gets his stuff together. He’d be a nice guy. There wouldn’t even be any jokes. [Laughs] Exactly. Just call it “Good Santa.”

Marion Cotillard: Don’t give up hope “Allied” right now. You see what scary times do to its married couple. Things are so bad that they can’t even be 100 percent sure if they can trust each other, even though their love is real. When you put people in extreme situations, it reveals a lot about their personalities. Especially for a woman who has to protect her family. This was what fascinated [screenwriter] Steven Knight — this idea of, how can love withstand betrayal? Love is one of the strongest feelings. Even when love is strong and authentic, it still has to face certain obstacles.

The Oscar-winner talks “Allied” and how recent events should inspire us to come together. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

In the World War II romantic thriller “Allied,” Marion Cotillard plays a French resistance fighter who meets and falls in love with a Canadian intelligence officer (Brad Pitt). They marry, but once confined to domestic life in London, Pitt’s character gets a disturbing brief: It’s discovered his wife may be leaking intelligence to the Nazis. But he refuses to believe the woman who bore his young daughter could be a double agent. The Oscar-winner, 41, talks to us about making an unusual war film, her fear of guns and staying positive after the election.

You’ve probably never seen Marion Cotillard shoot a big gun before, as she does in the World War II romantic thriller “Allied.” GETTY IMAGES

How have you been holding up since America elected Donald Trump? I’m a very, very positive person. I think we all have to learn from this and question ourselves. We can’t just be devastated, especially not now. Everybody has to take responsibility, but also take action. We have to analyze our consciences and question ourselves. This is an opportunity to go toward unity instead

of the other way. I’m with you, but I’m going to stew in sadness for a bit longer, then get back on the horse. We should take everything as a gift. Even when the package smells like s—, pardon my French [laughs], we have to see what kinds of positive things can come out of it. GETTY IMAGES

It’s uneasy watching a World War II movie like

It’s an unusual war film, because it’s one without big battles. Yeah, but it’s still a movie about battles. The battles are inside those characters.

You still get to shoot a gun, though. I don’t think you’ve ever done that on-screen before, though correct me if I’m wrong. Not in a movie. I think I shot guns in a TV film one or two times. But I’m not used to guns at all. I hate them. But that was a fun day. I’m scared of guns, too, but I understand why we’re drawn to seeing them in movies. It’s like indulging in something you’d never do in real life. I don’t mind watching movies with guns, either, I have to say. But when you have a gun in your hands, that raises a lot of questions. It’s an object that can kill someone, that is made to kill people. Of course, a car can kill people, a knife can kill people. But killing people isn’t the first purpose of those objects. When you have a gun in your hands, that’s a killing object. It’s totally different.

The five stages of agreeing to host Thanksgiving The big day is tomorrow, and your family and friends are already on their way. (Gulp.) Before we panic, let’s take a look back at how we got here ... ALLISON ZEIDMAN @alisonlzeidman letters@metro.us

Thanksgiving is less than a month away, and while no one else has stepped up and offered to host yet, surely someone will soon. Right? You’ve done it the last three years, so they can’t possibly think it’s your turn again, can they? Although, when they were all thanking you for last year, you did say “anytime. Oh no. What if they thought you actually meant that? Well ... give it a few weeks. Maybe someone else will come through.

Look. Maybe you should see if you can persuade everyone to just do a potluck this year. Sure, it’s Thanksgiving Day and everyone’s already started showing up at your house, but do these people really deserve your Thanksgiving dinner? Just put everything away and save it for a Friendsgiving a few days from now. Tell your family this year’s Thanksgiving is going to be “Choppedstyle: Grandma, Uncle Bill and cousin Tommy will compete to take the non-Turkey-Day contents of your fridge and turn them into a unique, flavorful dish that hopefully won’t give everyone food poisoning. That would be: sriracha, half a carton of

Acceptance

The meal is over, and everyone loved it. Of course they did. But does it even matter? You’re too full of tryptophan to care. And look at that kitchen. There are so many dishes to wash. Too many. It’s hopeless. You can’t go on. This is going to be the Thanksgiving that finally breaks you.

You know what? This was actually really nice. It’s so rare that you all get to see each other and spend quality time as a whole family. When your sister said “this beautiful meal,â€? it didn’t even sound that sarcastic. And Uncle Carl only told three “Crooked Hillaryâ€? jokes — a Thanksgiving miracle! And you! Great job hosting. Every. Time. Never gets old. (Also: Why can’t she just do the wink-wink?) Hopefully you’ll still be able to get a turkey! This close to Thanksgiving? You’ll be lucky to get a parking spot. You’ll probably end up going to 14 different stores, and then have to fight a little old lady for the last Butterball within state lines. And then, even if you do get a turkey, there’s that pressure to cook it just perfectly. Not enough, you give everyone salmonella; too much, everyone keeps commenting on how it’s “a little dry this year. Screw it. Just get chicken nuggets.

Around these parts, backto-back victories are worthy of a celebration. Go all the way back to March 2015 to find two straight 76ers wins. How about four wins in a row at home? That’s where the Sixers are following a 101-94 victory over the Miami Heat. The Sixers are 4-10 and have eons to go, but small glimpses of positivity are starting to appear. Joel Embiid continues to state his early case for Rookie of the Year after registering 22 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in slightly more than 23 minutes. Jerryd Bayless made his debut and was rusty with four points and five assists. Just having Bayless in uniform is a huge step forward. Jahlil Okafor was very

“One thing I always have in mind is make the fans happy. Especially at home, we want to win every game we can. Joel Embiid

effective with 15 points. Ben Simmons and Nerlens Noel look to be on the way back at some point in the near future. For the last three-plus seasons, the Sixers had numerous close games fall apart down the stretch. They’re learning how to close out these types of games and the wins will certainly help their confidence. “I’ve always felt that if we could buy time, and you’ve heard me use those words ad nauseam, we started out with incredibly poor luck, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. “You take a hit with your starting point guard. You take a hit with the top overall pick in the draft. You take a hit with your two five men with relation to restrictions. Then with Nerlens. We’ve gotten punched all over the place. We felt that pain

in the early start of the year and it’s still there in the early days. But I do see daylight. I do feel like when we start to get our guys healthier, we start to get into a rhythm. ‌ I’m seeing fight and resilience in the group.â€? The young kids are growing up. It’ll be a long-term commitment, but results are slowly starting to show. As the injured players continue to heal, Brown will have a nice problem of trying to figure out rotations and minutes. It sure beats the alternative. “There’s no veterans in my eyes in that group,â€? Brown said. “There’s nobody like a five-time All-Star or been a starter for six years and you just can’t believe he’s not starting. They’re all just young. They’re all trying to carve out their own place on the team. ‌ It’ll

figure itself out. When I paint it like it’s going to be natural and obvious, but in my heart of hearts, I know it isn’t. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge where the responsibility rests with me. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. Embiid is the anchor to this whole plan. Once again, the big man dominated down the stretch. For a kid who barely has any experience, it’s an amazing sight as the Sixers keep pulling out wins. “We’re just moving the ball and especially for me, I’m not forcing it anymore, Embiid said. “I’m just getting my shots in the flow of the offense. My turnovers are going down. It’s about moving the ball. That’s what we talked about since training camp. The Sixers didn’t notch their fourth win last season until Jan. 4. Think about that for a second. “I feel we’re moving in the right direction, Brown said. “I’m proud of certainly their effort and ability to execute better and better as time goes on.

Cowboys (9-1)

Giants (7-3)

Falcons (6-4)

Last week we summed up Ezekiel Elliott’s outstanding season, so here’s a look at Dak Prescott’s rookie year-todate, you decide who’s better. Dak is on pace for over 4,200 yards passing, has thrown 17 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

Landon Collins has five picks in four games and still all we can think is: poor Giants fans. It might be weird to say that about a team that’s won five straight, but even at home against the Bears your team refuses to win by more than one score. This week, at Cleveland, they’ve got this.

The Falcons have to be sick of playing birds. They’re 0-2 in matchups against the Seahawks and Eagles, and now the Cardinals will try their hand at stopping Atlanta. They can’t let off the gas. The Buccaneers are just one game behind. Atlanta will be well-rested after getting its bye.

No. 7

Seahawks (7-2-1)

Raiders (8-2)

Chiefs (7-3)

Seattle welcomed Thomas Rawls back with a teamleading 14 carries, but rookie C.J. Prosise kicked off the scoring with a 72-yard scoring run. Russell Wilson’s legs looked great, as he was continuously flushed but frustrated the Eagles pass rush by escaping or, more often, finding the open man.

The Raiders sit alone atop the AFC West, and atop the AFC playoff picture. The team ran for just 30 yards against the Texans Monday, don’t let that fool you. Running backs Latavius Murray, Jalen Richard, and Jamize Ozalawe combined for 11 catches for 199 yards and two scores.

Their lack of offense was bound to catch up to them at some point, though at home against Tampa Bay wasn’t the spot anyone would have picked. Despite this being a close game throughout, the Chiefs still got away from what they do best: running the football.

No. 3

No. 5

No. 8

Patriots (8-2)

Broncos (7-3)

Redskins (6-3-1)

It’s hard to find fault with the Patriots performance: 444 yards, four passing touchdowns, and yet somehow you just expected a larger victory by a New England team that had just lost and was visiting the NFL’s resident punching bag. Dion Lewis was solid his return to action.

The Tony Romo rumors can be put on. The Broncos are concerned with 2016 for the moment, and a monster matchup looms against Kansas City Sunday night. With the Chiefs and Broncos both at 7-3 and a game behind the Raiders in the AFC West, this is the kind of matchup the NFL needs.

What a revenge for Washington against the team that ended their 2015 season in the first round of the playoffs. With the offense clicking on all cylinders — it seems Rob Kelley has firmly supplanted Matt Jones, and with 137 rushing yards it’s hard to argue against.

What are Eagles odds of making playoffs? After 10 games the Eagles are 5-5, and stuck in last place in the best division in football. This record would put Philly in first or second place in five of the other seven divisions in football, but they are stuck in the NFC East, behind the 9-1 Cowboys, the 7-3 Giants and the 6-31 Redskins. The Eagles can more or less control their own fate if they can take care of business in the games ahead. Four of their six final games are at home with three of those home

games against their NFC East foes. They also host the Packers on Monday Night Football and play the Ravens and Bengals on the road. They would hold tie-breakers against the Vikings and Falcons but not the Lions or (as of now) their fellow NFC East foes. Predictionmachine. com cites Philly as having an 18.8 percent chance of winning a playoff spot through their 50,000-simulation formula. Their breakdown has both the ‘Skins and Giants winning

Philly is back home Monday. GETTY IMAGES

Wild Card spots. On another simulation site, fivethirtyeight. com has the Eagles with a slightly higher chance — 28 percent — but with a 13 percent drop after last week. That’s because not only did the Eagles falter against Seattle in Week 11, but all three NFC East teams also won. EVAN MACY

Best of the rest 10 — Lions (6-4) 11 — Texans (6-4) 12 — Dolphins (6-4) 13 — Eagles (5-5) 14 — Vikings 6-4) 15 — Colts (5-5) 16 — Ravens (5-5) 17 — Bills (5-5) 18 — Steelers (5-5) 19 — Buccaneers (5-5) 20 — Titans (5-6) 21 — Panthers (4-6) 22 — Cardinals (4-5-1) 23 — Saints (4-6)

metro.us/horoscopes Aries Check your financial status before you make a purchase or donation. You are best off putting money in a safe place and locking up your credit cards to avert temptation.

Libra An emotional matter will deter you from getting ahead. Don’t divulge what you are going through to anyone you are connected to professionally.

Taurus Change may be upsetting, but if you find a way to go with the current, you will stay in the mainstream, where you can be most effective.

Scorpio Don’t leave anything to chance. Stay on top of what everyone is doing and cover any shortcoming you see with added detail and physical input.

Gemini Do your own thing. You’ll be in the spotlight if you are assertive and make things happen. Talk is cheap if you don’t follow through.

Sagittarius A challenge will inspire you to take on greater goals. Establish your position and where you see yourself heading. The sky is the limit.

Cancer Don’t make abrupt changes based on an emotional flare-up. It’s best to back away from turmoil and focus on something you enjoy doing.

Capricorn Keep a steady pace. Work with what you have already established instead of incorporating something new into the mix.

Leo You’ll gain support if you share your plans with someone you respect and trust. A new beginning is within reach. Pick up the pace and head for the finish line.

Aquarius Convey your message to anyone who will listen. Display your talents and offer alternative suggestions. If you take command, you will get positive results.

Virgo Domestic changes will turn out well, even if they disrupt your emotional life. Get involved in pastimes or networking functions that will be beneficial.

Pisces What you do for others should be your focus. Avoid lengthy discussions or giving in to demands made by people who don’t need help. Focus on the underdog. EUGENIA LAST
