3 things you need to know US FACTORY, CONSUMER SENTIMENT DATA BRIGHT ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

1

New orders for U.S. manufactured capital goods rebounded in October, driven by rising demand for machinery and a range of other equipment, the latest indication of an acceleration in economic growth early in the fourth quarter. The brightening economic outlook received a further boost from other data on Wednesday showing a jump in consumer sentiment this month following the election of Donald Trump as the next president. Consumers embraced the business mogul’s victory, which they viewed as positive for their personal finances and the economy’s prospects. While the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose from a 43-year low last week, the trend in jobless claims remained consistent with a tightening labor market.

NO, ELTON JOHN WILL NOT BE TRUMP’S GAY FRIEND AT THE INAUGURATION

2

Don’t you hate when someone uses this rhetoric: I can’t be homophobic, I have a gay friend! That’s totally the stunt Trump’s team tried to pull when they claimed that Elton John would perform at Trump’s inauguration on January 20. A snippet of a BBC interview with a member of Trump’s transition team was shared on Twitter. He claims that Donald Trump will be the first US president to enter the office with a “pro-gay rights stance” and that Elton John’s performance at Trump’s opening ceremony reflects the president-elect’s “commitment to gay rights” the source said. Right. But according to The New York Times, Elton John’s team vehemently denied the claim. Look’s like Trump will have to find another token gay friend. SESALI BOWEN

VIENNA ZOO TWIN PANDA CUBS NAMED FU FENG AND FU BAN AT CEREMONY

3

Twin panda cubs born at Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo last summer were officially named Fu Feng and Fu Ban at a ceremony, although they were still too small to be there themselves. The cubs were born on Aug. 7 to giant panda Yang Yang. The zoo picked the name Fu Feng for the female cub and asked animal lovers to help choose a name for the male in an online poll; they eventually came up with Fu Ban. Zoo and other officials gathered for the naming ceremony, where billboards displaying the cubs’ pictures and their names were unveiled. The cubs have yet to make their public debut. Zoo director Dagmar Schratter said in a statement this would happen “as soon as they are both big enough”. REUTERS

Report: Trump’s plan to punish ‘sanctuary cities’ could be devastating for NYC “I urge Presidentelect Trump to remember that behind every federal line item is a human face – a family in need, a victim of domestic violence, an AIDS patient, a hungry school child,” the city comptroller said. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui

President-Elect Donald Trump vows to “cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities” during his first 100 days in office while Mayor Bill de Blasio said he plans to keep the city’s immigrants safe despite threatened funding cuts. How will this affect New York? Losing federal dollars would be a budgetary

nightmare, according to New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, who released an initial analysis of federal funding for city programs to help identify what’s at stake. “What we know with absolute certainty is that any cuts in Federal aid to New York will have a devastating impact. We have a record homelessness crisis that will be made much more challenging with any decrease in funding,” Stringer said. Federal aid to New York City accounts for one out of every 10 operational dollars, according to Stringer’s report. Eleven out of more than 40 mayoral agencies account for 59 percent of all city spending, but receive 92 percent of all federal grant aid, including the Department of Homeless Services and the Administration for Children’s Services. The cuts would even put the NYPD budget for intelligence and counterterrorism at risk,

Stringer warned. If federal aid for Section 8 Housing Choice vouchers is cut, New York will either have to cover the $482 million line item “or tens of thousands of New Yorkers might be without a home at a time when the City is already facing a record homelessness crisis,” according to the report. The New York City Police Department receives 61 percent of its $380 million Intelligence and Counterterrorism budget from the federal government. Child Protective Services, delivered by the Administration for Children’s Services, could see almost half of its $247 million budget slashed, the report said. “I urge Presidentelect Trump to remember that behind every federal line item is a human face — a family in need, a victim of domestic violence, an AIDS patient, a hungry school child,” Stringer said. “We are a city that welcomes immigrants

Airbnb shifts lawsuit challenging host fines law from state to NYC

Bronx boro prez invites Odell Beckham Jr. to sample local sites, not its strip clubs

The company agreed to drop the lawsuit and pursue the case in city courts.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has some advice for New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.: The next time you’re looking for a good time in the Bronx, try the zoo. Beckham apparently danced so enthusiastically at a strip club called Sin City Cabaret last week that his $25,000 diamond pinkie ring flew off his hand and is still missing, TMZ reported. The gossip item gave the Bronx a moment in the media — but not the moment Diaz prefers to read about. Diaz wrote a polite letter to Beckham, 24, thanking him for his visit to his borough, but suggesting that he might try some of the area’s more refined establishments for his next visit, The New York Times reported, “I would love to show both of you gentlemen there is more to the Bronx than establishments such as Sin City, where you risk losing more than your valuables,” Diaz wrote, noting that Beckham’s friend Von Miller of the Denver Broncos was also at the strip club on the night in question. He included a copy of the 2016 Bronx Visitors

Airbnb’s lawsuit challenging a New York state law that imposes steep fines on residents who want to rent their homes will now be heard in a New York City court. That’s because the two parties agreed it is the city, not the state, that enforces the regulation, The Wall Street Journal reported. The company filed the suit shortly after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a new short-term rental law on Oct. 21. His measure included costly fines on Airbnb hosts in an effort to deter the already illegal practice of advertising for short-term rentals by those who are not landlords or owners. The fines imposed on an Airbnb host in that instance — a rental stay of fewer than 30 days — could be as high as $7,500. The law would also help keep housing prices

down and open up more apartments for long-term use. “We have long sought to work with leaders in New York on clear, fair rules for home sharing, and we’re continuing to do all we can to protect the thousands of middleclass families who depend on home sharing to earn a little extra money,” Airbnb spokesman

BRIEFS De Blasio urges Cuomo to sign bill to crack down on tinted windows From the broken windows theory to the tinted windows theory. Mayor Bill de Blasio, with the support of the NYPD, called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo at a news conference Tuesday to sign legislation that would require car inspection stations to check for excessive window tinting and fail the excessively shady cars. It’s already illegal to drive in New York with front side window glass that lets in less than 70 percent light. Law enforcement officials argue that extremely tinted windows allow criminals with guns and contraband to go unseen. In 2007, NYPD Det. Russel Timoshenko was killed when he and his partner pulled over what looked like a stolen vehicle, and was shot by someone who was hidden behind dark windows. “I think if my son saw what was going on, maybe somehow

he could have prepared for what happened to him,” his mother, Tatayana Timonshenko, said in front of 1 Police Plaza, according to the Daily News. “Basically he was killed because he could not see through (the window).” The law would crack down on shady windows by requiring state inspectors to buy a special meter that cost about $100. Owners of vehicles with more than 30 percent tinting would not pass their annual inspection until they replaced the windows. The legislation was proposed to Cuomo and vetoed in 2012. Detractors of the bill said it would put an undue financial burden on state inspectors, and also that it would make undercover cops more vulnerable by being more visible. Cuomo is expected to sign the legislation by next week. A spokeswoman for the governor told the New York Post that he “always intended to sign the legislation.” AMANDA MIKELBERG

Peter Schottenfels said in a news release Tuesday. The case will now shift to New York City, which is Airbnb’s largest market in the United States. A hearing with city officials is expected on Dec. 17. The outcome of that decision could serve as a guide for legislation in other cities, which are attempting to draft similar

laws to regulate shortterm leases in direct response to Airbnb’s booming business model. Many supporters of the governor’s law feel Airbnb is siphoning business from hotels, and that it lacks sufficient regulation. The state law will not be enforced until the lawsuit is resolved, Bloomberg News reported.

Guide with his letter, and suggested more wholesome attractions such as the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. “If you would like to see what the Bronx is really about, and visit numerous establishments that our residents are actually proud of, I hope you will take me up on this offer,” Diaz wrote. Diaz told the athletes that Sin City has “a long history as a nuisance to our borough.” In August, the borough president had tried to get the establishment’s liquor license revoked on account of its association with shootings and prostitution. Parents council approves controversial rezoning for Upper West Side schools An elected parents committee has voted to approve a proposal remapping school zones on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, after 25 meetings in two years were held in an attempt to reduce overcrowding and promote racial integration. However, the vote to ratify the new map drawn by the Education Department is unlikely to end the controversies over boundaries or segregated schools, The New York Times reported. The new District 3 zones include a large number of schools with overwhelmingly black and Hispanic student bodies and only a small

number of schools populated with mostly white students. The approved plan redraws zones for 11 elementary schools from West 59th Street to West 116th Street. Among the schools that would be affected — band the subject of much debate — is P.S. 199. The zone for the high-achiev-

ing and overcrowded West 70th Street school would decrease, and two of the six buildings in the Lincoln Tower complex would be reassigned to P.S. 191, which is expected to move to a new facility. Mostly black and Hispanic students attend P.S. 191, and 7 percent of its students passed

state math tests, while 24 percent passed English language arts. Comparatively, P.S. 199 is mostly white, with 85 and 82 percent of students passing math and language arts, respectively. The plan also moves P.S. 452, which has a mostly white student body, 16 blocks south to West 61st Street into the building that now houses P.S. 191. The move was supported by the school’s principal and staff, who argued the school will be able to flourish and diversify in a larger space. Many parents opposed the move, saying it lengthens the commute for their students. GARY KANE

NEW YORK

Where to volunteer in NYC: Food banks, shelters and soup kitchens Instead of just eating and drinking your way through the next six weeks, why not harness the holiday spirit and take a pause to help your fellow New Yorkers in need?

The holiday season is the time of year when seeing friends and family is hard to avoid. We also find ourselves with more vacation days during these winter months. However, even though these two holiday realities suggest cheer and relaxation, they don’t always mean we’re taking the necessary time to slow down and appreciate what really matters. Instead of just eating and drinking your way through the next six weeks, why not harness the holiday spirit and take a pause to help your fellow New Yorkers in need? There are hundreds of opportunities to volunteer from now through the New Year, and the list we’ve compiled below is a good place to start.

1

God’s Love We Deliver

The mission of God’s Love We Deliver is to improve the health and wellbeing of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. Its efforts include preparing and delivering nutritious, high-quality meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. Check out different volunteer opportunities to find out how you can lend a hand this year.

2Citymeals on Wheels

There are various groups of people who need

of “Dear Santa” letters that arrive at post offices all over the country. With help from the USPS, every year warm-hearted folks bring Operation Santa Claus to life by responding to the sweet “Dear Santa” letters.

The Holy 8 Apostles Soup Kitchen The Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is open every day at 10:30 a.m. and feeds hundreds of hungry and homeless New Yorkers on a daily basis. Though the organization has already filled its volunteer needs for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, it still needs help throughout the winter season. Find out more information here.

9City Harvest ACFB.ORG

love this holiday season, including our homebound elderly neighbors. Citymeals on Wheels is committed to provide this group with nourishing meals and vital companionship. In addition to delivering food, its holiday volunteer opportunities include making greeting cards and attending its holiday benefit concert.

3

The Grand Central Food Program Sponsored by the Coalition for the Homeless, the Grand Central Food Program was started in 1985 after a homeless woman died from starvation in Grand Central Terminal. Since then it has become the largest mobile soup kitchen in New York, and unlike traditional soup kitchens, the organization brings food and resources directly to a person. It includes three vans that deliver healthy meals throughout the city, making 23 stops a day. Its efforts are needed by the homeless year round and the group encourages volunteers to

commit beyond just the holiday season. In addition to help needed delivering goods, the program also needs volunteers to monitor shelters and help with its annual holiday toy drive.

4

Help the Actors Theatre Workshop

The Actors Theatre Workshop has been providing New York City’s homeless children with a very special experience through their 12-week after-school theater and education program. Its program is called Builders of the New World (BNW), and its holiday celebrations kick-off the winter session. The workshop is looking for volunteers for its two-day holiday celebration and creative classes servicing more than 100 children living in temporary housing facilities. The events take place on Tuesday, Dec. 13 and Wednesday, Dec. 14. There are several ways you can help this year, including joining a project team in November to

prepare parties and get the word out, helping decorate the theater on Saturdays prior to the event, and mentoring children in attendance on the 13th and 14th.

Bank 5Food NYC

For over 30 years, the Food Bank for NYC has been the city’s major hunger-relief organization, working tirelessly to end hunger throughout the five boroughs. Its mission is to end hunger by organizing food, information and support for community survival, and there are many opportunities for you to lend a hand. It’s looking for volunteers to help with bank distribution set-up and holiday meal prep and service in several locations over the next few months. Check out its complete calendar of events to find a time and location that works for you.

for 6Hope New York

Hope for New York is a

nonprofit whose mission is to mobilize volunteers and financial resources to support nonprofit affiliates serving the poor and marginalized in New York City. It offers a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the winter months, so if you’re unable to commit time on Thanksgiving or Christmas, no worries — these folks need a hand all year. The organization is looking for volunteers in several different capacities, including preparing dinner for women in recovery, sharing a meal with an elderly resident and prepping and serving holiday meals. You can learn more about the various, options, times, and locations on its website.

7

Operation Santa Claus

While most of us have warm holiday events with friends and family to look forward to, there are many needy children without the same anticipatory glow. However, this doesn’t always dampen their spirits—as proved by the thousands

City Harvest was founded in 1982 and was run entirely by volunteers who connected neighborhood restaurants to food programs serving people in need. City Harvest volunteers remain a crucial part of operations and there are many different ways both individuals and groups can help out. The organization needs help with everything from its Mobile Markets to its nutrition education courses, again making this a great opportunity to start volunteering beyond the holiday season. Read more about its services and volunteer needs here.

10BARC

For all you animal lovers out there, BARC (Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition) in Williamsburg has a welcoming volunteer program that can fit easily into anybody’s busy schedule. Dog walking hours are offered several days a week in both the morning and evening. Visit its website for more information.

Mexican cement maker ready to help Trump build border wall A Mexican cement maker is ready to lend its services to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to build the wall he wants to erect on the southern border of the United States to curb immigration. “We can’t be choosy,” Enrique Escalante, chief executive officer of Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua said in an interview. “We’re an important producer in that area, and we have to respect our clients on both sides of the border.” Republican Trump campaigned vowing to build a “big, beautiful, powerful” wall across the 2,000-mile frontier in order to stop illegal immigrants from Mexico, which he accused of sending rapists and drug traffickers north. The campaign of the New York businessman, who has never previously held public office, was widely reviled in Mexico. Parts of the border are already divided by

high fences, and a huge part of the boundary runs along the Rio Grande river. Based in Chihuahua, a large northern state bordering Texas and New Mexico, GCC is one of the biggest construction-materials companies in Mexico. It generates around 70 percent of its sales in the United States, where it also has three plants. Escalante said Trump’s plans to invest in energy and infrastruc-

ture in the United States augured well for the firm. “For the business we’re in, Trump is a candidate that does favor the industry quite a bit,” Escalante said. GCC, whose shares are trading at their highest levels since 2008, is 23 percent owned by Mexican multinational cement company Cemex, which at the end of September announced plans to sell its stake. Trump won with lowest minority vote in decades, fueling divisions Real-estate mogul was elected with 8 percent of the black vote, 28 percent of the Hispanic vote and 27 percent of the Asian-American vote, according to the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency with less support from black and Hispanic voters than any president in at least 40 years, a Reuters review of polling data show, highlighting deep national divisions that have fueled incidents of

racial and political confrontation. Among black voters, his showing was comparable to the 9 percent captured by George W. Bush in 2000 and Ronald Reagan in 1984. But Bush and Reagan both did far better with His-

panic voters, capturing 35 percent and 34 percent, respectively, according to exit polling data compiled by the nonpartisan Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. And Trump’s performance among Asian-

Americans was the worst of any winning presidential candidate since tracking of that demographic began in 1992. The racial polarization behind Trump’s victory has helped set the stage for tensions that have surfaced repeatedly since the election, in white-supremacist victory celebrations, in anti-Trump protests and civil rights rallies, and in hundreds of racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic hate crimes documented by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist movements. The SPLC reports there were 701 incidents of “hateful harassment and intimidation” between the day following the Nov. 8 election and Nov. 16, with a spike in such incidents in the immediate wake of the vote. Signs point to an ongoing atmosphere of confrontation. The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, a white-separatist group that vilifies African-Americans, Jews and other minorities, plans an unusual Dec. 3 rally in North Carolina to celebrate Trump’s victory. Left-wing and anarchist groups have called for organized protests to disrupt the presidentelect’s Jan. 20 inauguration. And a “Women’s

March on Washington,” scheduled for the following day, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands to protest Trump’s presidency. American politics became increasingly racialized through President Barack Obama’s two terms, “but there was an attempt across the board, across the parties, to keep those tensions under the surface,” says Jamila Michener, an assistant professor of government at Cornell University. Trump’s anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim rhetoric “brought those divisions to the fore; it activated people on the right, who felt empowered, and it activated people on the left, who saw it as a threat,” she added. That dynamic was evident last week. When Vice Presidentelect Mike Pence attended the Broadway musical “Hamilton” in New York on Friday, the multiethnic cast closed with a statement expressing fears of a Trump presidency. A far different view was on display the next day as a crowd of about 275 people cheered Trump’s election at a Washington conference of the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist group with a strong anti-Semitic beliefs. US offers mobile device guidelines to curb driver distraction dangers Road deaths rose 10.4 percent in the first half of 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“These commonsense guidelines, grounded in the best research available, will help designers of mobile devices build products that cut down on distraction on the road.”

The U.S. Transportation Department issued voluntary guidelines for makers of mobile devices, asking them to help keep eyes on the road by developing a “driver mode” that would disable some distracting functions in moving cars. The guidelines also ask manufacturers to make it easy to pair mobile devices with in-vehicle systems to facilitate hands-free phone use. “These commonsense guidelines, grounded in the best research available, will help designers

of mobile devices build products that cut down on distraction on the road,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a press statement. Mark Rosekind, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), said in statement on

Wednesday that driver distraction was one of the factors behind the rise of traffic fatalities. Phone calls, text messages, navigation systems and other features on cellphones can be dangerous distractions for drivers and the Transportation Department and NHTSA

want to limit their functionality when the devices are in what is termed “driver mode.” The Transportation Department also called for ease in pairing, which connects smartphones and cars to allow drivers to use voice control on the devices. Phone and

vehicle pairing already are available for many new vehicles sold in the United States. Both the pairing and driver mode will reduce the potential for distraction by limiting the time a driver’s eyes are off the road, while also preserving the full functionality of the devices when used at other times. Major manufacturers of mobile devices used by American drivers include Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics.

An auto manufacturers trade group earlier this month urged President-elect Donald Trump to establish a presidential advisory committee to “coordinate auto sector regulators.” The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers also called on Trump to conduct a “comprehensive regulatory review” of all regulations and actions since Sept. 1, including the Obama administration’s new guidance on self-driving vehicles. GOBBLE, GOBBLE For many years now – certainly ever since my wife and I have had kids — Thanksgiving weekend has brought one of my greatest delights. I rummage around in the junk drawer beside the refrigerator, pushing aside decks of cards, fishing line, used batteries and broken flashlights until I find my old turkey call. It’s a strange little device you fit into your mouth and blow across to produce high pitched yelps which, for my purposes, sound just like a gobbler on the run. Then I sneak around the house letting loose at all sorts of unsuspecting hours. It drives my wife crazy, makes our daughters laugh, and leaves the dog hilariously confused. Good times. I’ve never hunted turkey, so I can’t entirely recall why I have this thing. As best I remember, my wife and I were in a giant fishing/hiking/ hunting/camping store and I’d been staring

like a teenager at the crossbows so long she decided an intervention was in order. “Wow, look, a turkey call!” she said. “You should get it!” It was something like that. And the hijinks have never stopped. Sometimes when I

must work on the holiday (pretty common for news folk) I bring it to the office. Here, I must say, it’s not as funny as I would hope. Generally, co-workers just stare around the room with a puzzled look as if they think the ventilation system has blown a bearing. But I have run our neighborhood’s annual Turkey 10K with it, urging on my fellow stuffing-burners with periodic squawks. They don’t laugh much either, but that’s because many are nearly hacking up lungs and that has a way of killing even a good joke. Anyway, you may notice this column has nothing to do with politics this week even though plenty is going on here in DC — cabinet selections, calls for investigations — the usual lot. But after all we’ve been through this year, I figured I needed a break. And frankly, I’m thankful for it. Hope you are too.

Trump names Haley, a foreign policy novice, as envoy to UN The 44-year-old daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley represents what some Republicans hope could be the new face of their party: a younger, more diverse generation of leaders. Donald Trump on Wednesday named South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a former critic with little foreign policy experience, to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at a time of uncertainty over America’s international role under his presidency. Haley, one of two women chosen for a job in Trump’s Cabinet, is “a proven dealmaker, and we look to be making plenty of deals. She will be a great

leader representing us on the world stage,” the Republican president-elect said in a statement. Haley took Trump strongly to task during the presidential campaign over his harsh rhetoric about illegal immigration and for not speaking forcefully enough against white supremacists. Trump has chosen mostly male conservatives so far for senior positions as he shapes his administration following his victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the Nov. 8 election. Trump takes over from Democratic President Barack Obama on Jan. 20. Also on Wednesday, a spokesman for former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Trump had not offered the retired neurosurgeon the

post of housing and urban development secretary, disputing a Wall Street Journal report. “Trump did not make an offer,” Carson spokesman Armstrong Williams told Reuters. “He asked him to consider HUD. Nothing has been offered and no decision has made.” The Journal, citing two people familiar with the deliberations, also reported that Trump was expected to pick billionaire investor Wilbur Ross as commerce secretary. No drugs, alcohol in driver in deadly Tenn. school bus crash No drugs or alcohol were found in the system of the man accused of crashing a Tennessee elementary school bus, killing five children and critically injuring six others, police said on Wednesday. Johnthony Walker, 24, was driving the bus full of students home from Chattanooga’s Woodmore Elementary School on Monday when it veered off a road, flipped onto its side and smashed into a tree and telephone poll, according to a police affidavit. Walker was driving on a narrow, winding road at well above the speed limit of 30 miles per hour when he lost control, leaving the bright yellow bus mangled and nearly sev-

ered in two, the affidavit said. Walker was charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. School officials said five children were killed: a kindergartner, a first-grader and three fourth-grade students. Six students were rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the crash

and another six were hospitalized with less severe injuries, officials said. Six children remained hospitalized but the hospital did not provide their current condition, citing privacy, Chattanooga Police Sergeant Austin Garrett told reporters. Garrett said while the investigation was still ongoing, there was no indication that Walker intentionally tried to harm the children. No children were thrown from the bus during the crash, Garrett said. The bus was not equipped with seatbelts but did have two cameras on board as well as an engine chip that could contain information, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. REUTERS

Inside the mind of Michel Gerard

wknd THE FUN STARTS HERE

Kelly Bishop says Emily Gilmore would have voted for Hillary It’s time for Friday night dinner again. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

Kelly Bishop does not care much for Emily Gilmore. “Emily is just so unpleasant,” she says of her character, the wealthy “Gilmore Girls” matriarch. “She is so outspoken, she is so snobbish. When I get a character like that, I like to really make her as thoroughly unpleasant as possible. [But] I made her somehow sympathetic, because people don’t hate me like I thought they would.” At a Netflix press day last month, Bishop charmed a roundtable of journalists—who certainly did not hate her portrayal of the irascible and controlling Emily Gilmore. The eldest Gilmore lady pulls rank whenever she can, most notably by making her daughter Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and granddaughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) attend painstakingly formal (and awkward) Friday night dinners throughout the show’s seven seasons. The actress returns to the series, which, in case you hadn’t heard, hits Netflix at exactly 3:01 a.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 25 for

a four-part revival, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” Bishop said she had no reservations about participating, naming creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s writing as a major draw. “I always trust her writing. I would jump on any project if she said to me, ‘Kelly, would you be interested in doing it?’ I would probably say yes before I read it,” said the 72-year-old actress, who also worked on ShermanPalladino’s “Bunheads” post-“Gilmore Girls.” The chance to reunite with certain co-stars was equally appealing. “Just the thought of getting to work with Lauren [Graham]; we really love each other, both as actors and as people,” she said. But the on screen motherdaughter duo, known for their tumultuous relationship, has not mellowed in the revival, according to Bishop. “They’re trying, but no, I don’t think so. It’s just taken on a more mature dysfunction. But we are GETTY IMAGES

fiercely loyal. I would fight anyone who hurt her. And then I would fight her,” she said, laughing. The only negative Bishop could think of associated with the show’s return? Filming in L.A. In a stubborn, opinionated, Emily Gilmoreesque rant, (read: utterly delightful) she listed her grievances about the city. “I have never liked Los Angeles. It’s dry and flat and has no architecture, and then it has fires, and then it finally rains and it has mudslides, and it has too many people and too many cars, and it has no center, and if you want to see a really good friend you only have to drive an hour-and-a-half. I always feel so isolated. It’s not my town,” said the actress, who hails from Denver but spent her early career in New Y o r k City as a Broadway dancer.

When asked about filming without co-star Edward Herrmann (Emily’s husband, Richard Gilmore), who passed away in late 2014, Bishop said, “There was a real emptiness without having Ed there.” “Winter,” the first of four 90-minute episodes in “A Year in the Life” (each named after a season), opens with Emily grappling with the loss of her husband. “‘We were married for 50 years. Half of me is gone,’” Bishop said, quoting Emily in one scene. “She’s exploring because she doesn’t know where she’s going.” The conversation steered lighter, onto Emily Gilmore’s old-money sense of style —those pricey St. John knits. Bishop said she purchased Emily’s jewelry herself. “The Emily Gilmore necklace? That’s my necklace, I bought it,” she said. “I said, Emily needs a statement piece. She’s a rich woman and she doesn’t have an important necklace?” And in case you were wondering: Emily, although more of a skirt suit than a pantsuit lady, “would have voted for Hillary,” Bishop said. “Emily would have liked [her] strength and intelligence.”

Yanic Truesdale reprises his role as Michel Gerard on “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” BENJO ARWAS

Fussy, filterless and unapologetically French, Michel Gerard, the Dragonfly Inn’s sarcastic yet lovable receptionist in “Gilmore Girls” is one of the series’ most memorable characters. This Friday, he returns for the show’s Netflix revival, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” The actor behind the role, Yanic Truesdale, is actually Canadian and not at all persnickety, but admits to sharing some traits with Michel—his passion for fitness, for example. We chat with Truesdale about returning to Stars Hollow, look back at his audition for the role and discover the actor’s second career as the owner of a cycling studio. Michel is certainly one-ofa-kind. What do you love most about him? I think the strong part of this character is the fact that he has very little filter. We’re taught to say “thank you” and “please” and all that stuff, and to kind of hide how we feel about people and remain nice, but Michel doesn’t really bother with that. He just says things how they are. When you first got the script for “Gilmore Girls” did you think at that time it would be so successful? I felt very good about the character — “Gilmore Girls” was my first audition in L.A.! I thought the part was very well-suited for me. Immediately when I read it, I was like, “Huh, that is, strangely, a very, very good fit.” I connected with him immediately. I understood where he came from. My audition scene was actually the scene in the pilot

where he says, “People are particularly stupid today, can’t talk to anymore of them.” What can we expect from Michel in the revival? You’ll find out much more about who Michel is. That is the big thing for me. We finally go into his personal life, his love life — there’s a lot of stuff that has happened since the show ended, he’s in the midst of a lot of things and there’s much more that is revealed at a human level. Since the show ended its initial run, we heard you started a cycling studio in Montreal called Spin Energie. How did that come about? I really don’t know how it happened. I’m not a businessman, but I figured it out. I’ve always been passionate about health — it’s just how I was raised. But I’ve abused my body a bit too much and my knees aren’t as good, so I can’t jog like I used to. I discovered spinning and I loved it. I was in Montreal to shoot a new show and there was no spin studio. I thought someone should do it, and then I thought, I should do it. I found a space, signed a 10-year lease and five months later it was open. I just ran with it. It felt bigger than me. JENNIFER LOGUE

18 BLACK FRIDAY

Sales to get excited about Some like to play football post-Thanksgiving gorge fest, and others like to partake in another national sport: Black Friday shopping. But before you hit the malls, or your handy laptop, we highlight some sales to get excited about.

Keds We’re loving Kate Spade’s sparkly new kicks for Keds, and on Black Friday and Cyber Monday you can get 30 percent off all full-price styles.

JCPenney Do your research, plan ahead, make a budget and stick to it are among these experts’ tips for successful black friday shopping. ISTOCK

How to shop for Black Friday deals Tips and tricks from the experts. KATE MOONEY @YatinBrooklyn

Kate.Mooney@metro.us

It’s the most highly anticipated shopping day of the year. How can consumers best take advantage? We consulted with shopping and moneysaving experts for their advice on best strategizing your spending. A combination of planning ahead, doing your research, setting a budget — and sticking to it — is the way to ensure successful shopping during this season of deals.

Which deals are trending this year? According to Benjamin Glaser, the features editor at DealNews, the top categories this season are: TVs, laptops, home appliances and clothing. Cyber Monday, on the other hand, is a better day to find discounted airfare and hotel bookings.

How should you research deals? Check sites like DealNews and Bfads.net to stay up to date on the latest offerings across major retailers. Camel Camel

Camel tracks prices on Amazon. As far as apps, consumer and moneysaving expert Andrea Woroch names the Flipp app and Shop Savvy for making price comparisons of digital circulars, coupons and in-store items. Coupon Sherpa gives access to instore coupons, while the Santa’s Bag app helps you keep track of your shopping list and budget.

Should you shop in-store or online? According to Sara Skirboll, shopping and trends expert at RetailMeNot, 73 percent of Black Friday shoppers this year are planning to shop at brick-and-mortar locations. For those undeterred by the crowds, Woroch has a few tips for making your big shopping day more manageable. “Consider heading to a mall or outlet center where you can access many retailers in one location and avoid driving around town,” she says. She suggests bringing a shopping buddy who can help divide and conquer your list — and wait in line for you while you’re grabbing a lastminute item. Leaving your credit

cards at home and paying with cash will keep you from making impulse buys outside of your budget. Glaser says online shopping is preferable because it’s more convenient and easier to make price comparisons on goods; often, the deals online and in-store are roughly equivalent. If you take a chance at in-store doorbusters, he says, know you run the risk of waiting in line and still not getting the deal before it runs out.

Cash in on deals before Black Friday According to Glaser, Thanksgiving is actually the biggest day of the year for discounts and deals. He advises making your purchases on Turkey Day. “You can do it without sacrificing family time because these deals are available online,” he says.

Which deals should you hold out for? Gift cards and jewelry see better deals in December, closer to the holidays, says Glaser, as do toys and seasonal decor, notes Woroch. Prices on winter clothing, if you can wait, will drop in January and February, Glaser says.

Black Friday sales start at midnight Nov. 23 at JCPenney.com. But brave in-store shoppers (doors open at 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day) should arrive early to receive an envelope containing mystery coupons. Some of this year’s deals include Mixi touch tech gloves for $1.99, select Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys for $5.99, $79 for a Sharper Image 5.1 channel Bluetooth home-theater system and $994 for the Samsung 26-cubic-foot three-door French door refrigerator. The best Black Friday deals Black Friday shopping can be chaotic, sometimes violent and occasionally disappointing. For shoppers who want to spend less time browsing the racks and more time getting great deals, a report has named the best stores to do just that. WalletHub, a personal-finance website, crunched the numbers of 8,000 Black Friday deals from 35 of the

largest national retailers and identified which offer the biggest discounts, including by category. Macy’s topped the list, with an average 63 percent discount for Black Friday shoppers. Other national retailers that made the top 10 were Kohl’s, which came in sixth, with an average 58 percent discount, and Sears, in 10th place with 44 percent.

On average, shoppers can expect to save about 39 percent on Black Friday. WalletHub encourages shoppers to aim for that discount amount or higher to avoid traps. WalletHub also analyzed which items shoppers can expect to save the most on. Deal seekers buying jewelry or clothing and accessories will save the most, with savings averaging 65 percent and 45 percent,

respectively. But there’s bad news for parents: The pre-Christmas shopping event doesn’t bring great savings on toys, which, on average, see only about a 33 percent discount. At big-box retailer Target, toys are only about 17 percent off. To read the full report and see average deals for major retailers, visit Wallethub .com. ALEXIS SACHDEV

Things to watch for as Giants face Browns

A blowout win over a horrible team would be nice to see for once. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

Coming off one trap game, the New York Giants face another team on Sunday (1 p.m., Fox, at Cleveland) that they can very easily overlook in the Cleveland Browns, the worst team in football. In fact, the Browns might be the worst team we’ve seen in the NFL in years. The Giants took care of business last Sunday against the Chicago Bears, overcoming a halftime deficit to see their defense ramp things up in the second half for a 22-16 win. The Giants have now won five in a row to improve to 7-3 and are right in the thick of the NFC’s Wild Card picture. The Browns, on the other hand, well — perhaps Kevin Costner really would do a better job of piecing together a team. This is a group that is pretty bad on both sides of the ball and there is no escaping their 0-11 record.

1Hitting the road

Given the fact that the Giants are facing such a bad team and coming

off an important win last Sunday, perhaps the fact that they are on the road is a good thing for this team right now. A little focus, a little edge might help keep them from overlooking the worst team in the league. They face an opponent that is a joke right now. Now after three straight home games, the Giants hit the road for one that, on paper, shouldn’t be all that hard. But that’s where the road mentality might be able to keep them level-headed. “It’s an exciting week for our guys,” head coach Ben McAdoo said. “Haven’t been on the road in a little while, so anytime you get a chance to get on the road and bond and spend some time together, some quality time together that way, your team has a chance to grow and get closer.” The Browns last won on Dec. 13 of last year, a losing streak of 14 games.

new, old 2The quarterback

Following another concussion for quarterback Cody Kessler, the Browns are giving the nod once again to Josh McCown as their starter against the Giants. It has been a rough year for McCown, as it has been for most of his teammates, as he lacks playmakers at the

skill positions. Making it worse for McCown, he faces a Giants defense that brought an awful lot of pressure on Sunday in the second half of their win over the Bears. The Browns lead the league by a wide margin in both sacks allowed (38) and quarterback hits (92). Not exactly a formula for success.

3About Odell

All-Pro wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was a bit petulant following the Bears game, a disappointing outing for him where he had just five catches. Much has been made of his latest set of antics but Beckham wants to be an impact player (whether that is for selfish reasons or not remains to be seen). Crying about it won’t help, but this Sunday might be the best remedy. He’ll get the chance on Sunday against the league’s second worst defense, though oddly enough they haven’t been horrible against the pass this season. Beckham will be a focal point of the offense with the Giants knowing that if they can get their playmaker involved, it can break this game early. A couple early touchdowns and the Giants might be resting their stars come the fourth quarter.

Things to watch for as Jets host Patriots

The Jets are rested, but the Patriots might be the best team in the NFL. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

Tuesday marked the four-year anniversary of one of the league’s most infamous plays — the Butt Fumble. And the way things have been going for the Jets (3-7) lately, it’s appropriate they’re playing the same opponent from that game, the New England Patriots (8-2) this Sunday (4:25 p.m., CBS). It’s also suitable for quarterback issues to rear their head again for Gang Green, as head coach Todd Bowles is fumbling the ball on his decision to re-insert Ryan Fitzpatrick into the starting lineup. The coach could’ve used Fitzpatrick’s knee sprain as a way out from ever seeing the bearded one on the field again in a Jets’ uni. But he instead hearkened to the old, tired mantra that Fitzpatrick gives the Jets the “best chance to win.â€?  Â

league-high 13 interceptions. Bowles, though, isn’t ready for Petty just yet, and is ready to ride the Fitzpatrick freefall again.  “He’s healthy [and] he’s been our starter. We can do more things with him,â€? Bowles reasoned. “I don’t just give away jobs.â€? Â

Forget the fact that the Jets’ season is essentially over for all intents and purposes. And that now is the time to see if New York truly is ready for Bryce Petty. But Bowles is coaching as if he doesn’t want to let down a veteran team that is still in the playoff hunt — which they’re not.

1

Any more magic?

If Fitzpatrick has anything left in the tank, Sunday would be the time to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Beating the Patriots would be the season’s highlight, but if recent history is anything to follow, don’t count on it. Regardless of who has played quarterback this season for the Jets, it’s been an albatross. Jets quarterbacks have completed just 56.9 percent of their passes, the worst mark in the AFC. The team’s 68.7 quarterback rating is also the worst in the NFL, 20.4 marks below the league average this season.  Fitzpatrick, 33, has led the charge, as he’s completed 168-of-298 passes for 1,983 yards, eight touchdowns, and a

a giant 2Catch sleeping?

About the only way the Jets upset the Patriots — barring holding Tom Brady for ransom — is to catch New England truly sleeping at the wheel. Anything is possible in the NFL, and the league loves to pump that “any given Sundayâ€? mantra, but perhaps the Jets can make a game of this by lulling the Pats to sleep. The Patriots are coming into Week 12 after beating the 49ers, 30-17, in San Francisco. Logistically, New England will be at a disadvantage flying back from the Bay Area to Foxboro, working through a shortened holiday week to get ready for their AFC East rival, and then play a mid-afternoon contest in

front of a loud, frothing MetLife crowd, who will have undoubtedly be fullthrottled and tailgated to the hilt. Meanwhile, the Jets are coming off their bye week and have had added time to prepare, and should be up for their hated rivals. Plus, any matchup against a divisional opponent is never a gimme. The Patriots are 2-1 against the AFC East, only losing to Buffalo while Brady

was still serving his fourgame suspension. It’s unlikely all these factors break Gang Green’s way, but that’s why they play the games.Â

on 3Revis an island

Once upon a time, it was Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis who left many star wideouts stranded on his personal purgatory spot called Revis Island. As

a matter of fact, it was only two seasons ago that the island was open for business while Revis was a member of the Patriots and collecting a Super Bowl ring. But fast forward to present day and it’s now the future Hall of Famer who is in purgatory with no hope of escaping. Brady is one of the all-time best at recognizing mismatches and exploiting it time and again.
