Dylann Roof, an avowed white supremacist accused of killing nine black parishioners at a historic Charleston, South Carolina, church last year, will be allowed to represent himself at his federal death penalty trial, a judge ruled on Monday. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel said in court he believed Roof’s decision to serve as his own lawyer was unwise but granted his request after finding the defendant had the right and capacity to do so. Roof faces 33 counts of hate crimes, obstruction of religion and firearms charges stemming from the shooting, which occurred during a Bible study session at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in June 2015. UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO VOTE WEDNESDAY ON NORTH KOREA SANCTIONS

2

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Wednesday morning on a U.S.-drafted resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea over its fifth and largest nuclear test conducted in September, diplomats said on Monday. Diplomats said the council’s five veto-wielding powers — the United States, China, Britain, Russia and France — had agreed to new measures, seen by Reuters on Friday, that target Pyongyang’s export earnings. North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006. It conducted its latest nuclear test on Sept. 9, and the United States and China, a North Korean ally, then spent more than two months negotiating new sanctions. The draft resolution was given to the full 15-member council on Friday. It intends to close loopholes in sanctions imposed in March, following Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear test in January. REUTERS

UBER DRIVERS IN US CITIES TO JOIN PLANNED WORKER PROTESTS

Drivers for ride service company Uber will join planned nationwide protests on Tuesday, when activists and low-wage workers renew their call for better pay and the right to join a union in the wake of Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential election win, organizers said. Hundreds of Uber drivers in two dozen cities, including San Francisco, Miami and Boston, for the first time will add their voices to the union-backed “Fight for $15” campaign that has helped convince several cities and states to raise starting pay significantly above the U.S. minimum wage of $7.25. The four-year-old “Fight for $15” movement includes fast-food workers, home care aides, airport baggage handlers and other low-wage employees. REUTERS

Though the plant is set to close permanently in 2019, it will continue to be regulated and inspected. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Federal regulators from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission launched a three-week safety inspection of the long-troubled Pilgrim nuclear power plant on Monday. A team of about 20 people will carry out the “top-to-bottom” review that will focus on human performance, equipment reliability and safety culture, according to the commission. The Pilgrim plant has been under increased oversight since September 2015, when an inspection found safety issues that downgraded the power plant to Column 4 on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Action Matrix Summary, also called the “Degraded Cornerstone Column.” “What we do when a plant is in Column 4 is conduct intensive inspec-

tions to ensure that the underlying performance issues are addressed and that there aren’t other issues that haven’t exhibited themselves,” said Diane Screnci, senior public affairs officer for the NRC’s Region 1. “At Pilgrim, we’re doing it in three parts. This is the third part and largest of the inspections.” Screnci said that the issues that prompted Pilgrim to be downgraded were of “low to moderate” safety concerns, but its failure to fix them in a timely matter resulted in the downgrade and pushed the NRC to take this lasting action. Entergy Corp., the Louisiana-based operator which owns the Pilgrim plant, announced last year that it is closing the plant by June 1, 2019, because of “poor market conditions.” Because Pilgrim plans to refuel and continue to provide nuclear power until that date, the NRC will continue to regulate and inspect the plant. “The economics simply do not support continued operation,” the company said when it first announced the plant would close. “Pilgrim’s revenues continue to be significant-

For the expanded version, visit metro.us ly impacted by low wholesale energy prices driven by historically low natural gas prices. We made a commitment to serve as a capacity resource for the region until 2019.” The current inspection is the “next step in Pilgrim’s process toward a return to industry excellence,” said Entergy spokesman Patrick O’Brien in a news release. “We have worked hard to address the issues that led to station performance decline and look forward to demonstrating to the NRC that we have made significant progress in these areas through the inspection process.” O’Brien further clarified that though the plant still plans to close in 2019, Pilgrim hopes to return to “Column 1,” or regular oversight status. The permanent shutdown of Pilgrim won’t be

a complicated or unsafe procedure because plants often shut down while operating, whether to refuel or to investigate a concern, according to the NRC. By June 1, 2019 — a date decided by Entergy — the reactors will be turned off and the remaining fuel removed. Pilgrim will then have up to 60 years to complete its “decommissioning,” meaning the full cleanup of radioactivity from concrete or buildings. That long time frame has to do with how radioactivity decays, Screnci explained, but she said that the process can be completed more quickly than that. While the NRC said that Pilgrim’s violations weren’t serious enough to cause intense safety concerns, watchdog groups and community residents have spoken out against the plant. “Time and time again if you look at what went wrong this year, there’s a common thread: The equipment was supposed to have been replaced and fixed when it was identified a year or so ago, but it was never attended to,” said Mary Lampert of the watchdog group PilgrimWatch.

Bromfield School students took action after the rock was defaced. ERIN TIERNAN @MetroNewYork

The rock outside the Bromfield School had always served as a canvas for students to spread positive messages. But on Friday, the large sloping rock was vandalized, covered with swastikas, hate speech and sexist imagery. A “Trump 2016” sign was also scrawled across the center. The next day, armed with cans of white paint, brushes and rollers, students at the school in Harvard painted over the hate messages, taking back their “senior rock.” “Students want their school to be known for all great reasons Harvard’s ever been known for, and this felt like an affront to them,” Harvard Public Schools Superintendent Linda Dwight said Monday. “This is not what they want their town to be known for and certainly not what they want their school district to be known for. Students are ready to take back the message and show the world that all students matter.” After having applied the white primer paint, students plan to paint a positive design by the end of the week, Dwight said. The Bromfield School serves about 700 students in grades six through 12.

Bromfield public school students on Saturday painted over swastikas and sexist symbols that had been scrawled on the rock. HARVARD PUBLIC SCHOOLS/TWITTER

Harvard is a rural community about 35 miles northwest of Boston. “The students are working to address the vandalism and we have an opportunity to support them as they confront hateful imagery and all that it represents,” Bromfield graduate Emma Franzeim wrote in a GoFundMe page she created. The campaign raised more than $1,500 in two days for painting supplies and to help continue efforts by students to spread positive “community spirit.” Using the remaining funds, Dwight said the school district planned to bring in a speaker to discuss the issue. Students and teachers continued the conversation about hate speech Monday morning with a schoolwide assembly where they discussed

the vandalism, and were given strategies for dealing with hateful rhetoric. In a letter she wrote to students, parents and the community just after the vandalism was discovered, Dwight condemned the hateful messages. “We ask that the senior class rededicate their rock to expressions of hope for the future, including tolerance that reflects the diversity of our town and the student body as they have done so well in the past,” she said. Harvard police and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office are investigating the incident. Police encouraged anyone with information about the vandalism to call 978-456-8276 or leave an anonymous tip on the department’s website.

MBTA officials are touting their planned improvements and hoping to instill some confidence in wary riders, particularly those on the Red Line, who experienced significant delays last week. Systemwide, the T has been undergoing a massive overhaul in preparedness, focusing in part on how it handles Boston winters. The historic snowfall during the 2015 season plagued the rail system — which is partly above ground and susceptible to the weather — with long delays and service interruptions. This year, by Christmas, the MBTA plans to

have installed new third rails along the outdoor sections of the Red Line except the Longfellow Bridge. That structure, which crosses over the Charles River and is under construction, shuttles the Red Line between Cambridge and Boston. On Nov. 21, service reliability on the Red Line dropped. The cause was two disabled trains and slippery rail conditions between Braintree and JFK stations, said Massachu-

setts Bay Transportation Authority Chief Operating Officer Jeff Gonneville. He attributed the slippery conditions to “residual dew” that froze into ice on the rail, which contributed to a peak period performance reliability of 85 percent. Over the 30 days leading up to Nov. 21, the peak performance reliability was 90 percent, according to MBTA data. To help riders prepare for interruptions,

the MBTA has introduced real-time service alerts on its website in recent years. A Twitter page also keeps riders up to date on the latest service alerts, something Gov. Charlie Baker praised on a WGBH appearance Monday. “I think it’s good that the T is being incredibly transparent about what’s going on,” he said. Still, rider frustration is no secret. The constant delays and service interruptions have even become fodder for local comedians like Tory Bullock, who famously filmed a “breakup” video with the T in October. “We actually have two shutdowns this weekend to try to accelerate the work,” said Todd Johnson, deputy chief of operations for service performance. — State House News Service contributed to this story. Ohio State University student injures 11 in car, knife attack The attack at the Columbus campus, which was initially reported by the university on Twitter as involving an “active shooter,” drew a massive response of heavily armed police. A student drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians at Ohio State University on Monday morning and then jumped out and stabbed several people with a butcher knife, injuring 11 people, before a police officer shot and killed the attacker, officials said. Abdul Razak Ali Artan was shot and killed within minutes after plowing into the group by a police officer with less than two years on the force, said Monica

A U.S. government official confirmed the assailant was from Somalia, 18 years old and

a lawful permanent resident of the United States. A second government source said investigators had reason to believe the attacker at the campus in Columbus was a Somali refugee. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said intelligence agencies were assisting in the investigation. “It bears all of the hallmarks of a terror attack carried out by someone who may have been self-radicalized,” Schiff said in a statement. Another U.S. official told Reuters U.S. agencies are investigating the Columbus attacker’s background and motivations, but cannot clearly say yet whether he had any ties to suspected militant cells or groups. The suspect jumped the curb and used the vehicle to strike pedestrians in front of Watts Hall, Moll said. The suspect left the vehicle armed with the knife and stabbed several others, Ohio State University Police Chief Craig Stone said. “This was done on purpose,” Stone said. Less than two minutes elapsed between the first call for help at 9:52 a.m. local time and the shots fired by campus police officer Alan Horujko, 28, Moll said. The incident follows a stabbing attack in September at the Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where a man whose family came to

the United States from Somalia wounded 10 people with a knife before he was shot to death by an off-duty police officer. Authorities last month indicated the Minnesota attacker showed signs of radicalization and a Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent said his actions appeared to be “consistent with the philosophies of violent radical Islamic groups.” One person was critically injured in Monday’s incident, Columbus fire officials said. Eleven people were treated at area hospitals, including 10 taken by ambulance. Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center treated six victims, said Dr. Andrew Thomas, the chief medical officer. They included two with stab wounds and three others who had injuries from being hit with the vehicle. Two other hospitals received five patients, who suffered from lacerations and injuries caused by the vehicle, Thomas said. With nearly 60,000 students, the Columbus campus is the state’s flagship public university. REUTERS

BRIEF Donate to Metro’s Toy Drive In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Metro is once again launching Metro Magic, our annual toy drive for underprivileged children in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. This year marks the 7th anniversary of the toy drive, which was renamed in memory of the man who oversaw the project for more than four years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor in chief. Mr. Metcalf passed away in 2013 from colon cancer at the age of 50. Mr. Metcalf lit up every year as he saw the faces of children unwrap their holiday gifts. It is our goal to keep that magic alive. “Tony felt we should use the size and scale of Metro to help other’s and he used enormous dedication and force to execute the project and every year make children in need a little happier during the holiday season,” said Metro’s Chief Executive Officer Yggers Mortensen. “I am proud to continue this project in honor of Tony and I hope all our readers, suppliers and members of the Metro team will help to make this yet another great Metro Magic year.” Metro has created a wish list at the Target website that readers can access by going to Metro.us and clicking on the Tony’s Metro Magic story on the homepage. From there, just choose the toys you wish to donate, pay online using Target’s secure payment system, and your gifts, along with your name attached, will be delivered to Metro’s offices in each city. This season, we hope you will remember the children who will spend the holidays in shelters or who may not have gifts to open. Even one small gift can make a big difference in a child’s holiday season. METRO

Ed Sheeran was hanging out with James Blunt and Princess Beatrice, seventh in line to succeed Queen Elizabeth II, earlier this month, no big deal. James jokingly asked Princess Beatrice to “knight” him, and she obliged. But either the sword was too heavy or the princess has no aim, because she nicked Ed’s face instead. But we may have gotten it wrong after all! According to the Sun, Niall Horan, fresh in the face of his own solo career, says, “We will back. We would be silly not to… ridiculous.” Horan says the remaining members of the band are concentrating on their solo projects (“Harry wanted to do his movie”) and are otherwise “just chilling.” While there’s no specific timeframe set for 1D 2.0, we can already hear the screaming teenyboppers off in the distance, ready to rise up once more.

simplest things are what leave you with the most. Do you think you live a crazy life? I am happy because I have the people who I love and I do what I like. Anyone who can make “Back to the Future, “Forrest Gump and last year’s “The Walk is officially versatile. With “Allied, the filmmaker finally gets to do his war movie. But it’s on his terms. Set in World War II, it’s a romantic thriller about two spies (Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard) who fall in love while on a mission in Casablanca. They marry and relocate to London, at which point Pitt’s character is informed his wife may be leaking intel to the Nazis. Refusing to believe this, he goes out of his way to prove her innocence, even though he can’t be sure of it. Were there certain challenges you were looking to undertake when you took on a World War II movie that’s about characters, not battles? My approach to these

things is, “How am I supposed to tell the story? What is the camera doing to tell the story?â€? The thing I had to concentrate on the most was to never lose sight of the fact that these people were madly in love with each other. That’s what I always came back to. Everything visually had to speak to that. And Brad Pitt’s character is so in love he’s convinced Marianne is innocent. He doesn’t y into macho, jealous rage, though some of the things he does are still troubling. Yeah. He so desperately needs to disprove it, but he’s almost on an impossible mission. He starts to realize that it’s delusional thinking. He puts himself and other people in harm’s way. Neither of your protagonists has many chances to speak their minds, which allows you to use the camera to convey character psychology. Even if we don’t know exactly what they’re thinking, we can get a general sense of how rattled they are. Definitely. The design that I spoke of with Don Burgess, my cameraman,

Shooting close-ups of Marion Cotillard must be a real treat for a ďŹ lmmaker. Oh yeah, it’s just great. It’s absolute spectacle.

That’s filmmaking spectacle, to do a close-up of an actress like that. And a close-up is only something that can be done in movies, or a visual medium. It can’t be done in any other art form. It’s always been a special effect. To me, all other special effects are an extension on that. We tell stories using the tools and illusions of this specific art form.

A watch that looks like home

Lucas Hedges plays a high schooler forced to spend time with his unhappy uncle (Casey Affleck) after the death of his father in Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea,” now in theaters. CLAIRE FOLGER; PHOTO BELOW: GETTY IMAGES

The funny side of the year’s saddest movie Luke Hedges talks about being a sensitive teen playing a macho kid in “Manchester by the Sea.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Lucas Hedges is not even 20 years old and he’s already worked with three great, very different filmmakers. He played the bully who got injured with scissors in Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom.” He then appeared in “The Zero Theorem,” Terry Gilliam’s most recent film. Now Hedges is in a very different mode. In Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea,” he plays a teenager whose father (Kyle Chandler) has just died. In the aftermath, his character, named Patrick, spends a lot of time with his grouchy, depressed uncle (Casey Affleck), who has another tragedy in his past. The pair’s prickly relationship brings a lot of comedy to a deeply sad and honest film about grief and guilt.

I have to admit I laughed a lot during this very, very sad movie. Do you find that it, at times, is funny? Yeah, totally. Terry Gilliam once told me about Graham Chapman’s funeral. John Cleese delivered this brilliant speech where he just made fun of him. And it was hilarious. I love this idea that there’s never a wrong time to laugh. I’m not saying that people should be making fun of all the tragic things in the world, but something this movie does really well is it finds the humor in this profoundly tragic situation. Patrick has this great compass for how he wants to live his life, and when you make the juxtaposition between him and Casey’s character, the result is really funny.

It really captures this certain quality that’s all over Massachusetts — that hostile, aggressive way everyone has of dealing with each other. As someone not from that area, how did you learn to understand it? My relationship with [Massachusetts] before I did the movie was really feeling estranged from it. I’m the son of a very emotional filmmaker [Peter Hedges, of “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”] and my mom is an actress [Susan Bruce]. I was raised in a very protective world that encouraged me to be as emotional as I wanted to be — not to be a baby, but to cry when I needed to cry. My initial response to that world is that’s not the case [there]. There’s a kind of masculine energy that’s intimidating to me, that isn’t very familiar to

me. I don’t want to put it down, because I don’t know what it’s like to be these people. I’ve played a part, a character who’s from this world. But I don’t know what it’s like to be born in it. I’d be lying if I said I understood it. It’s very moving watching Affleck’s Lee, who’s definitely masculine, struggle to deal with emotions that none of us could easily deal with. Lee is dealt a hand that even somebody who is raised perfectly well by society, and was taught to deal with their emotions, wouldn’t have been able to come back from. This situation is so horrifying and he has so little support from the community that he has to run away. He’s exiled. How can he recover from that, even if he has an understanding of how to heal? How can he confront it? It’s not that he’s some macho guy, but I do feel that’s true of certain parts of this world. That’s a theme of the movie. But it’s also not true that Lee’s some macho idiot who wants to drink beer and play football. He’s not a caricature.

Michael Lembo was always a watch guy. A native of Waltham — which, he’s quick to remind, is the original watch city and home to the first watch factory in America — Lembo had the idea for a high-quality, affordable, heritage-inspired timepiece brand for years before he put the wheels (and gears) in motion. He debuted Back Bay Watch Co., a line of women’s and men’s watches inspired by the look, feel and history of Boston’s Brahmin brownstone neighborhood. “I wanted a classiclooking timepiece that matches the classic neighborhood of Back Bay. That area of the city — that’s where everything started. It has heritage,” says Lembo, who also works in the neighborhood’s bustling hospitality insurance, currently the food and beverage manager at the Lowes Hotel’s Precinct Kitchen + Bar. “There’s also a modern element of the neighborhood — with Newbury Street and the steady stream of new businesses coming in — so I wanted to incorporate that vibe of the city as well.” The debut collection, which made their first appearances via social media earlier this year, features the Arlington watch for men and the Berkeley for women, both named after the neighborhood streets Lembo passes each day en route to work. The watches feature rounded gold hardware inspired by the gold leaf and copper domes in Back Bay and Beacon Hill, and

traditional elements like a domed crystal face and a second hand dial are carefully incorporated. The watchband colors — rusty beige leather and matte black — were chosen to represent the neighborhood’s brownstone facades. Updated features — an oversized fit and modern clips and bands — give each piece a contemporary feel, and the face’s stylized number “8” is a pair of back-to-back B’s, for Back Bay, of course. Lembo says many of his customers have been former residents of the area or family members of students who remember the neighborhood fondly. The price point ranges from $110 to $125 and Lembo hopes consumers will find themselves collecting multiple pieces from each line. “I want them to be more of a fashion statement, matching [each watch] to what they’re wearing that day,” he adds. The next collection, due in spring, will focus on Beacon Street, with a more rustic vibe inspired by the brownstones and cobblestone hatchways of Back Bay’s iconic main drag. But where next? For Lembo, inspiration is endless. “I love walking the streets and incorporating them into watches,” he explains, noting inspiration in colors and shapes to be found in the likes of Trinity Church, the State House and Copley Square. “There’s no shortage of what you can intertwine into a watch.” RACHEL RACZKA

With #GivingTuesday, nonprofits have a day to shine. LAKSHMI GANDHI @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Tuesday, November 29, 2016 #GivingTuesday is a global day of celebration that is all about giving to nonproďŹ ts. On Tuesday, November 29, St. Anthony Shrine will be participating in #GivingTuesday, this 24-hour celebration of giving!

It takes $12,000 per day to keep our doors open.

We’ve all heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but what about a day devoted to giving back to the communities all around us? Giving Tuesday has been doing just that since 2011. First started at New York’s 92nd Street Y as a way to encourage people to donate to nonprofits and community organizations, Giving Tuesday has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that raised over $117 million last year. Organizers say they expect interest to be even greater this year. “Since the election, we’ve seen towns and cities come together and decide to celebrate community, says Asha Curran, the 92nd Street Y’s chief innovation officer. “Giving Tuesday was created as a way to give your time, give your money and give your voice to causes you believe in. As conversa-

tions about how to get more involved continue to heat up in the coming days, we have everything you need to know about how to participate in Giving Tuesday.

Finding the right organization for you On a tight budget this year? Curran says even small donations can make a big difference to most nonprofits. “It doesn’t even have to be a donation, it could be an act of kindness, she says. Curran encourages potential donors to browse through the #GivingTuesday hashtag on both Twitter and Facebook to see which groups or causes appeal to them. You can also visit givingtuesday.org and search for organizations by region and issue.

Hashtagging means caring Social media has always played a vital part in the growth of Giving Tuesday. While many donors often feel shy about announcing their support of a particular

charity or cause, Curran says Facebook and Twitter posts about donating can make a vital difference. “I think we underestimate how much of an impact talking about our donations can have. The truth is, people give because they are asked to by a friend or they see their friends are doing so.” For donors who want to share a version of their story that’s longer than 140 characters, Giving Tuesday is also hosting its My Giving Story contest with the Gates Foundation and Facebook. Donors who write a short essay can win up to $10,000 in donations for the nonprofit of their

Creating a movement Curran notes that even countries that traditionally do not celebrate Thanksgiving (or have Black Friday sales) are beginning to embrace Giving Tuesday. “We have partners in Russia, Brazil, Croatia and the United Kingdom,” she notes. “While those countries are all very different, the things that drive our partners are all the same. MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY Boxing is Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima’s go-to workout. COURTESY OF VICTORIA’S SECRET

Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima is no angel in the boxing ring She throws punches at Aerospace Gym in Chelsea. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

With the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show only a week away, model Adriana Lima is getting ready for the runway by sparring at Aerospace boxing gym in Chelsea. The 35-year-old Victoria’s Secret angel, who has been boxing since she was 19, trains six days a week under Aerospace co-owner boxing champion Michael Olajide Jr. We caught up with Lima at Aerospace to learn about her workouts, what she eats to fuel up and the song that pumps her up to throw punches.

Why boxing is her favorite way to stay fit “Boxing to me was the exercise that showed me how strong I could be as a woman,” Lima says. “It is very empowering. I like challenges. Every day you learn something new. With boxing, you’re always stepping up.” The practice also tests the Brazilian model’s mental strength. “[The exercise] helps me with my mind, because you come here and have to focus completely on the combination of punches so you don’t think about something else,” she says. “It’s kind of my meditation.”

Her routine: “In the morning I take my kids to school, and then I go to the gym,” says the mother of two. The six-day-a-week,

getting the benefits of weights without using weights,” he says. “Then we get in the ring and catch punches,”says Olajide. “She does all the things you’d expect from a boxer.”

What she eats to fuel her fists

90-minute workouts vary, but a typical warm-up consists of 10 to 15 straight minutes of jumping rope, for cardio. That will be followed by intense shadow boxing for 10 minutes, and then onto focused mitt work for 30 to 40 minutes. “We’ll also do a lot

muscle-conditioning exercises, where I use my hands to resist her movements — I call it hand-crafting. That will tone her core and legs,” says trainer Olajide. “Using body-weight resistance and the body’s natural range of motion, it’s almost like you’re

“It’s such an intense workout, and food is energy,” says Lima, who adds that she eats six times a day, small meals of veggies, protein and some carbs. For breakfast, she’ll have egg whites or oatmeal. For a midmorning snack, she’ll opt for raw vegetables. Lunch tends to be quinoa with vegetables and protein — fish or chicken, usually, never red meat. An afternoon snack might include fruit or nuts. Dinner follows in the

same vein as lunch with another veggie/carb/protein meal. “My bedtime ritual is to have buckwheat cereal; it’s my favorite thing,” she says.

How she works out if she can’t hit the gym

“If I’m traveling, have a photo shoot and don’t have time to go to the gym, I go running,” she says. “Every boxer has to run — on the treadmill, outside. I can do four miles. It is not my favorite thing to do, I have to say, but I get it done.”

Her favorite pump-up jam “My song right now is ‘Till I Collapse,’ by Eminem,” she says. “The lyrics and everything. I love that song, it’s superempowering to me.”

Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time.

Tom Brady will become the NFL’s all-time winningest quarterback this season. And it’s in your best interest to embrace it now while you still have the chance. I’m not here to go all Max Kellerman on you and proclaim that Brady is about to “fall off a cliff” in terms of production. Seeing what he’s still capable of on Sundays, even after a four-game suspension to begin the season, that proclamation is absurd. But I am here to remind you that success doesn’t last forever. And what the New England Patriots are doing right now just isn’t normal. Brady picked up the 200th win of his career on Sunday, tying Peyton Manning for most all-time wins after leading the Patriots on a game-winning fourth-quarter drive, en route to a 22-17 win over the New York Jets at MetLife. He finished the game 30-of-50 for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Brady now has thrown 18 touchdowns and just one interception in seven games this season. Turn on the radio or log into your social media account, and you might not realize that the Patriots are 9-2 and currently hold the No. 1 seed in the AFC after Week 12. Constantly looking ahead and comparing the Pats to their upcoming opponents has created a certain type of fear that fans in any other city most likely can’t relate to. That’s because, in those

other cities, the fears they have for their respective football teams are justified. Maybe it’s because I’m a sports-talk radio host and I have to take crazy calls for a living, but sometimes I can’t wrap my brain around the negativity that surrounds the Patriots — even after a win. At 9-2, and with a realistic opportunity to go to a sixth-straight AFC Championship game, there shouldn’t be any complaining at all. Do you know how many fans in other cities would like to enjoy a simple playoff berth? Nevermind a trip to the conference championship? There’s a reason why everyone in the world hates the Patriots. All they do is win. And while there may be some spoiled punks out there who will point out to me that the Pats have only won one Super Bowl in the last 11 seasons, please keep in mind that in those 11 seasons, the Patriots have missed the playoffs only once, advanced to the AFC Championship seven times and went to three Super Bowls. Add New England’s three Super Bowl championships from 2001-2004, and you have a team that’s been playing in the NFL’s version of the “Final Four” 10 times in the last 15 seasons. Imagine being from Cleveland, loving football, having to watch Tom Brady play in late January almost every single year, and thinking to yourself, “Why can’t that be us?” Or better yet, “Why can’t we just make the damn playoffs?” Well, the answer is simple. They don’t have Brady and Bill Belichick.

Still, I sometimes have to listen to people break down a Patriots win as if having Brady and Belichick is some type of burden. It’s the usual, “Ok, they got the win, BUT…” There always seems to be that “but.” And I realize this doesn’t speak for everyone in New England. There are some who embrace this winning environment and enjoy it for what it is. I’ve been called “overconfident” and “cocky” when it comes to my Patriots predictions every week. The world I’d like to live in is one where you aren’t being arrogant for thinking an 8-2 team with Brady and Belichick could go on the road and defeat a 3-7 Jets team that had only one win in their own building this season. Well, the Patriots went into MetLife and won their ninth game of the season, just as I expected they would. And with more in-conference wins than Oakland, New England leaps back up into the top seed in the AFC for the time being. All because Brady led the way on a Patriots fourth-quarter comeback with a nine-play, 83-yard touchdown drive for his 200th win. It wasn’t perfect by any means. And they didn’t cover the spread. But I just felt the need to remind some people that — regardless of some obvious flaws — what the Patriots are doing right now, it isn’t a bad thing. Might as well embrace it before it’s too late. Dominic Moore has stabilized the Bruins’ fourth line. GETTY IMAGES

Moore helping to lead B’s back to respectability The center has been a blessing for the Bruins. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

When veteran two-way center Dominic Moore signed a one-year deal with the Bruins back on Aug. 30 for $900,000, it’s safe to say that it barely made a ripple around the NHL. Playing for his 10th club, it was no guarantee that Moore would make Boston’s opening day roster - let alone have a profound impact at any point of the 2016-17 season. Fast forward 22 games into this campaign, and Moore looks like a complete steal by Bruins GM Don Sweeney. Not only has Moore stabilized Boston’s revamped fourth line with faceoff wins and responsible defensive play but he’s also provided an unexpected scoring punch to go along with that. “He’s a committed player,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien said about Moore. “It’s fun playing with him,” added his new linemate, right wing Jimmy

Hayes. “He wins the puck and gets it in deep. He’s more talented than people give him credit for.” In Sunday’s impressive 4-1 Bruins win over Tampa Bay (13-9-1), Moore scored Boston’s second goal which gave him six on the season. That’s notable for two reasons: he tied left wing Brad Marchand for second on the team in goals behind right wing David Pastrnak (12 goals) while simultaneously matching his entire total from 80 games last season with the Rangers. Moore was born in Sarnia, Ontario, but at this point Moore might as well be an honorary Bostonian since he’s spent a good deal of time in this area. In the 1999-2000 season with Harvard, he joined his older brothers Mark and Steve (who spent three years with the Avalanche) as the first trio of brothers to ever play for the Harvard men’s hockey team. Dominic was a third-round pick by the Rangers in 2000 (95th overall). “Honestly, I’m not really thinking about scoring [goals],” admitted Moore. “I just want to play my game and help us contrib-

ute as a line. The team has been struggling lately to score goals [just four in a three-game losing streak that ended on Sunday] and that starts by defending well. We need to make plays coming out of our zone.” At age 36, his NHL journey has been a remarkable one in the sense that he’s continued to find work in numerous places: Rangers, Penguins, Wild, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Panthers, Canadiens, Lightning and Sharks before coming to the Bruins. For now, he’s enjoying the ride in Black and Gold as he has added three assists to go along with those six goals. He’s reached double-digits in goals four times in his 11 NHL seasons with a careerhigh of 18 with Tampa Bay in 2010-11. All told, he has 95 goals and 159 assists in 787 regular season games. In 93 career playoff games, he has 12 goals and 16 assists. If the Bruins can break their recent playoff drought this spring, you have to think the leadership and overachieving nature of a player like Moore will be an underrated reason why they get to the postseason.

Libra You need to step up your game and bring about changes that will make you feel good about who you are and what you do. Jump at an opportunity.

Taurus Don’t get involved in joint ventures or lend or borrow money or possessions. Protect what you have and refuse to give in to someone pressuring you for a donation.

Scorpio A missed opportunity will encourage a new idea. Reuse old material to construct something unique and applicable to current trends. Romance is encouraged.

Gemini Set high standards and proceed with passion. Your actions will make a statement that will lead to recognition and new opportunities.

Sagittarius Set up interviews or collaborate with someone who is as aggressive and hardworking as you are. There are gains to be made if you take the initiative.

Cancer Don’t trust your peers. Sharing personal information will put you in a precarious position. Don’t feel the need to make changes just because someone else does.

Capricorn Stick to simple changes that will not result in uncertainty with friends or relatives. Understanding the impact of change and offering people incentives will pay off.

Leo Don’t get angry when you can get moving. Making alterations to your home or job will be rejuvenating. Children and elders will contribute insight that will help you.

Aquarius You need to set high standards and goals for yourself and others. Strive for equality, peace and happiness. Don’t back away from change or controversy.

Virgo Emotional matters will flare up, causing you to miss other opportunities. Put things in perspective and distance yourself from whatever is causing you stress.

Pisces Too much input from outsiders will confuse you. If you feel uncertain about something, take the time to do some research. EUGENIA LAST
