U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was re-elected to her post on Wednesday despite a challenge from a Rust Belt congressman who said the party needed new leadership after a disappointing showing in elections this month. Pelosi, 76, a Californian who has been in Congress for 30 years and led the party in the House for 14 of them, defeated 43-year-old Tim Ryan, a seventerm representative from the Youngstown area of northeastern Ohio in a 134-63 vote, aides said. U.S. voters elected Republican Donald Trump to the White House and Republicans kept their majorities in the House and Senate in the Nov. 8 elections. Ryan, in challenging Pelosi for the leadership job, said the party needed to do a better job of reaching out to the working-class voters who backed Trump. REUTERS

At least five people were killed and dozens more were injured after tornadoes tore through Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi overnight and into Wednesday morning, forecasters and local media reported. Three people were killed in the night in Rosalie, a small community in northeastern Alabama, where at least one tornado was reported by a weather spotter, the National Weather Service said on its website. “Nighttime tornadoes can be particularly dangerous since they are difficult to see and can be quick-moving, all while many people are asleep,” the National Weather Service said in a statement. A couple was killed in Tennessee’s Polk County, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported, citing a law enforcement official. Several dozen others were injured in the state, including at least 20 people in McMinn County, ABC affiliate WATE reported. REUTERS
NETFLIX SUBSCRIBERS CAN BINGE-WATCH SHOWS OFFLINE

Video streaming pioneer Netflix Inc. has added an option that allows subscribers to download shows at no additional cost on their mobile device to watch without an internet connection. Netflix signaled in recent months it would add an offline viewing option to better compete as the streaming video market becomes more and more crowded. Amazon.com Inc’s rival streaming video service, Prime Video, has had this option for about a year. While the new option announced on Wednesday is available for all of Netflix’s subscribers, it could have greater appeal in international markets such as Africa and Asia, where internet service is less ubiquitous than it is in the United States. Boston is one step closer to its own plastic bag ban. On Wednesday, City Councilor Matt O’Malley and Council President Michelle Wu introduced an ordinance to eliminate the flimsy, unrecyclable plastic bags and impose a 5-cent fee per bag for the reusable, recyclable or compostable variety. More than 40 Massachusetts cities and towns now have some kind of plastic bag legislation on the books or in process, along with many cities across the country. In 2014, California enacted the first statewide plastic bag legislation in the U.S. Varying measures have been adopted in cities throughout the country since then. Some of the laws only add fees to the bags, other combine those fees with prohibitions on single-use bags. A few of the measures focus on implementing more effective recycling programs, including in-store return options.
In Boston, O’Malley said the need is great. Roughly 20 tons of plastic bags are removed from residential trash, he said, citing information from the city’s recycling provider, Casella. Although some residents may believe plastic bags are recyclable, most of them are not. “It takes hours upon hours of folks removing them from the [recycling] equipment,” O’Malley said. “So I would argue that not having an ordinance in place is not financially responsible to taxpayers’ money.” More importantly, he said, the bill would benefit the environment. Many of the single-use, flimsy bags get caught in storm drains, trees and generally litter the city streets, he said. If put into effect, the ordinance would not eliminate plastic bags entirely. It will allow for plastic bags that are 3 millimeters or thicker, which O’Malley said is similar to a “bookstore bag,” and more likely to be reused than the thinner bags that tear easily. During his Wednesday Berklee School of Music class, 24-year-old grad student Kevin Leong helped teach students the song “Jingle Bells” — not how to play the musical notes, but how to sing the English words. The students were guests at Rosie’s Place, a shelter for poor and homeless women and the first women’s shelter in the U.S. Many women who come to Rosie’s Place are immigrants and still struggle with speaking English. For the past three semesters, Leong has participated in a Berklee class that helps these women, many in their 40s, with their communication skills through music therapy practices. Music therapy is an established health profession in which through music and a therapeutic relationship, people address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs on an individual, explained Peggy Codding, a professor of music therapy at Berklee. With this class, the therapy aspect comes from sharing personal stories. Berklee students sit down with women from Rosie’s and learn about their lives, asking the women where they grew up, stories about their home country, what holidays they celebrated and so on. The Berklee students then use their songwriting skills to turn those stories into lyrics. The students are also all trained in improvisation, Codding said. They bring instru-
ments like guitars and drums to class and give the Rosie’s women — many who have strong ties to music from their own cultures — maracas and shakers, to add rhythm to their conversations. Leong noted that the aim of the class is not to improve the women’s “grammar or syntax,” but to connect and make them more comfortable with an unknown language by tying it to the common denominator of sound. “What we aim to do is improve their conversational English and confidence in speaking,” he said. “We empower them through songwriting, using their words exactly to write the songs.” Jayne Garceau, a 19-year-old Berklee student in the class this semester, reiterated the idea of making these women more confident. “If you don’t have confidence when you speak [a foreign language], you won’t want to, and then you won’t improve,” she said. “Integrating music, it gets rid of that idea of having to get over your fear.” When teaching a song to the women, the Berklee students go slow: word by word, line by line, to help the women with repetition and articulation. But it’s not just the women who are learning from this class. “It’s definitely given me perspective,” Garceau said. When she first came to Berklee from a small town outside of Chicago, she realized how different things were here and worried about adapting. “But after seeing these women who came from the Dominican Republic, Africa, China, be here at Rosie’s wanting to learn English, coming every week from places they have to travel an hour from just for a two-hour English lesson to better themselves and their community, that’s amazing,” she said. Data app attempts to help Bostonians better understand MBTA costs
The link between sugar consumption and increased body fat has long been known. Too much sugar in the diet promotes more insulin, the fat storing hormone, and thus more body fat.

With service cuts and a fare hike this year, it’s no surprise to riders that paying for public transportation in the Boston region gets expensive. But does the price tag on MBTA services add up? That was the question on Greg Sullivan’s mind when he started pulling together Federal Transit Administration data on regional systems like the MBTA from across the country. “We wanted to see where they stand. Is their service more expensive than others — the cost per trip, per mile, per hour,” Sullivan, research director to the Boston-based public policy think tank Pioneer Institute, said. The FTA has longkept records from public transit agencies across the country. Any system that receives federal dollars is mandated to share information on its services and operating expenses. The problem was understanding it. With the help of

The app allows users to access information on the MBTA’s operational and capital expenses and service and operating efficiencies going back
to 1992. Using a series of taps along the top of the screen, users can select any of the last four tabs to measure the MBTA against results of other transit agencies in the U.S. The app can even narrow comparisons to cohorts — systems that are similar to the MBTA in size and scope. Users can also select by mode — bus, light rail, heavy rail, etc. So, how does the MBTA measure up? Spoiler alert: Costs at the MBTA are on the high side. Using the data, Sullivan hopes policymakers can identify areas for cost savings. The MBTA is getting the message. Aaron Hernandez sues company that records jailhouse phone calls Former New England Patriots tight end and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez is suing the company that records jailhouse phone calls because someone secretly accessed conversations he had while awaiting trial in 2014. The lawsuit, filed first in Suffolk County Superior Court and then in U.S. District Court in Boston, alleges a breach occurred in the electronic database of Securus Technologies, which allowed an unauthorized person to access the Hernandez calls, according to The Boston Globe. Hernandez is serving a life sentence without parole for the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd. He is awaiting trial in Suffolk County Superior Court for the fatal shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado outside a Boston nightclub in 2012. He has pleaded not guilty to those

charges. Hernandez’s lawsuit cites a Boston Herald article from last month that broke the news of the breach. In that article, Peter Van Delft, spokesman for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed to the Herald that “during a routine security check, our Sheriff’s Investigative
Division discovered that Securus’ telephone database had been accessed for calls relating to detainee Hernandez. The department then initiated discussions with Securus officials about improving security,� Delft said. Prosecutors and Hernandez’s current defense team were never informed about the security breach, the Herald reported. Hernandez is arguing that his privacy was invaded and his civil rights violated. “Plaintiff was damaged as a result of the lack of confidentiality and security in Defendant’s electronic database,� attorneys for Hernandez wrote, according to the Herald. “Because the full extent of the security breach is as yet unknown, the amount of Defendant’s damages must be determined at trial.�

Hillary Clinton surprises Katy Perry at UNICEF gala Katy Perry was the honoree at UNICEF’s annual Snowflake Ball on Tuesday night. The “Roar” singer has raised more than $1 million for the global children’s organization and was the recipient of its Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian award. But her biggest honor may have come from the surprise guest who presented the 32-year-old with the award. In only her second appearance since losing the presidential election,
Hillary Clinton praised Perry for “powerful voice,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Clinton insisted, “We need champions like Katy now more than ever.” The megastar, who fiercely campaigned for Clinton, was brought to tears over the heartfelt acknowledgment. Perry’s family and the special man in her life were in the audience to celebrate the accomplishment. Oh, hi, Orlando Bloom.

The couple, who both rose to prominence in pop groups (she was a member of Girls Aloud) started dating earlier this year. It looks like they got the ball rolling pretty quickly, as Cheryl appears to be in her second trimester. But we’re not judging.

Justin Bieber jokes that ‘hell is Instagram’ Justin Bieber tried out a new comedy routine on the final stop of his Purpose world tour in London on Tuesday night. A few jokes from the “Sorry” singer were a welcome reprieve from his lashing out at fans for screaming too loud at a concert in October. The crooner, who deleted his Instagram page in August, asked
his audience if they thought he should bring it back. But they were let down when he joked “Nah, I don’t want to get my Instagram back. Instagram is for the devil. I’m sure … I think hell is Instagram. I’m, like, 90 percent sure.” He went on, “We get sent to hell and we get, like, locked in the Instagram server. Like, I’m
stuck in the DMs. I’m trying to climb my way out and I can’t.” He’s not the only celeb who thinks IG can be a bit overwhelming. Kendall Jenner took a break from the photo-sharing app earlier this month. We guess having millions of adoring fans is stressful.
If you didn’t already know, Khloe Kardashian just launched a denim brand called Good American. The jeans, sold by retailers like Nordstrom, are made with curvy girls in mind, because, duh, a Kardashian made them. The 32-year-old recently took fans inside her denim factory on — also duh — Snapchat. But one viewer had her own
theory about how the jeans are made. The Twitter user said Khloe had a sweatshop working on her jeans, and the reality star didn’t take kindly to that at all. She clapped back, “Watch your mouth. All make salaries and all are employed in la! Know your info before you chime in.” She followed up with: “It means a lot to me to fight to make my denim in the US, and to be employing good wages to all of my hardworking employees!” At over $150 a pop, her garment workers better be getting paid a living wage.

First let me say this; I have never watched “Gilmore Girls.” I know, I know. Even when you write about entertainment for a living, sometimes there are holes in your knowledge. I know fans are passionate about it, and I’m sure I’ll marathon it at some point. When I heard about the revival, however, it made me happy. I know not everyone is on board with reprising old shows, but I am. It’s like visiting long lost friends. You may not like where life has taken
them, or what happens after you reconnect, but there is a hole that is filled, even when those friends are fictional. I’ve always felt like this. Maybe it’s because I’ve always been an avid reader. When one of my favorite authors, Anne McCaffrey, went back to a series, “Dragonriders of Pern,” she’d left alone for a while, I felt like a parched desert dweller given a glass of water. I get attached to fictional characters. We all do. We invest hours and hours in their lives and relationships, sometimes more than we do with real friends. In a way, sometimes we connect to them even more, as we watch them go through the same things we have, without the pressure to help them fix things. We can observe how they handle it and compare it with what we’ve done. When it’s something we haven’t gone through, we can consider how we would handle it if something similar happened to us. In a way, it’s almost more intimate than a real-life friendship because it shows us ourselves in a true light. Whether or not I liked the “X-Files” revival, I was desperate
to know what happened to Mulder and Scully. I, like many of you, wanted to be a part of their lives again. It’s for the same reason that I read all of the continuing comic book adventures of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I spent my formative years learning from these characters, battling with them and watching their relationships wax and wane. When I think of that period of my life, or discuss it with friends, they always come up. Similarly, when I think about my childhood, characters like Lessa or Menolly from the “Pern” series are right there in the background. Hell, I’d give anything (and I know I’m not alone here) to see more of what happened to the “Firefly” gang, though the loss of Ron Glass, who played Shephard Book, means that I will never get that chance. So keep bringing back our old favorites, in addition to giving us new characters to care about. Huzzah to the “Gilmore Girls” revival for letting fans in on what happened in their fictional lives, and for reminding us of where we were the last time we saw them.

Garrett Hedlund is a man of few words. He’s laconic, laidback, almost aloof, but with a strange sense of humor that comes out at random moments. That’s one of many reasons it was tough, at first, for him to act in “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” the latest from Ang Lee. The film concerns a young soldier (played by Joe Alwyn) sifting through traumatic memories of the Iraq war while his troop is honored at a football game. Hedlund plays the hepped-up sergeant. He speaks a lot, and quickly. On top of that, Lee shot the film in a radical, revolutionary technology called “high-frame rate”: a new kind of digital cinematography that makes everything look hyper-real. Hedlund — of “On the Road,” “Tron: Legacy” and the original “Friday Night Lights” movie — talks to us about this unusual film. Did you find that the high-frame rate required you to change how you acted? If you’re really stylized with the high-frame rate, it can makes actors look fake. Ang, when I first met with him, said, “If you try to act, it’s going to look like you’re acting.” That was a little intimidating. Because I knew we had some big scenes. I was like, “Oh, I’m f—ed. The reason I was cast was

because I’m an actor. Now he’s telling us not to act.” But I guess it worked out. [Laughs] You have to speak really fast. Was that difficult? Yeah. [Laughs] There was a military supervisor that we had. He had a similar life to [his character]. He was a very fast talker — which I’m not. Ang said to me, soon as I met him, “This is your character.”
Given how much you talk here, this would make a good double feature with “Inside Llewyn Davis,” in which you’re the opposite: You speak maybe two words. [Big laugh] Yeah. Tell me about the boot camp. We’d do an 8-mile rock backpack run. They sprayed us with a firehose while we were upside down over a puddle. They made us do port side and bow side with f—in’ telephone poles. This [drill sergeant] would yell at me: “You that f—ing actor who was on ‘Friday Night Lights’?” I’d say, “Yes, sir.” He said, “I’ve worked too hard to become a ‘sir.’ You call me ‘Master Chief Hoff-
man.’” I’d say, “Yes, sir.” He’d say, “Do not call me ‘sir’!” [Laughs] Later I discovered he was the motherf—er who trained everyone on [“Friday Night Lights” film director] Peter Berg’s other films, on “Lone Survivor” and everything else. But yeah, for the first day it felt like s—. Boot camp sounds rough for anyone, but actors probably don’t take it particularly well. They took everyone’s phones away from them. There was a group of guys that have big Twitter followers and stuff like that. They felt like they were missing their fans. I’ve never been on it. I thought it was funny that a group of guys would be missing their Twitter fans more than paying attention to the film we’re doing. But they broke them out of that. It’s addictive. It’s a 24-7 job being on social media. Turns out.

Speaking about controversyâ&#x20AC;Ś Kanye West. Everybody knows Kanye can be a headache, but is he still worth it? Kanye is absolutely worth it. It’s endless summer in Aruba. Because it sits just outside the hurricane belt in the southern Caribbean, there is no rainy season. Its white sand is cool, humidity remains low all year and the turquoise waters surrounding the island nation are always warm. And it’s all just a four-hour flight from New York. Because we’re about to spend three months cooped up indoors for
the winter, we booked a flight from Newark to Aruba ($352 nonstop roundtrip on United) to enjoy the sunshine and get in some of the workouts we’re sure to miss once snow begins to fall. The water has worn away the volcanic stone, creating what is known as the natural pool. Climb down carefully along the slippery rocks, and you’ll find a calm and inviting pond to swim in as the ocean waves crash and ebb just feet away.

For a closer look at the Caribbean Sea’s wildlife, go snorkeling off the leeward coast of the island. A half-day Luncheon Snorkel Sail ($81.99 per person, viator.com) includes a buffet with delicious local curries and stews. The experience is worth the dive to check out the Antilla, a German merchant ship, which was sunk in 1940 after Germany invaded Holland. The 400-foot long cargo ship has been perfectly preserved. The Tropicana Resort & Casino boasts the

Yes, the papaya fish (red snapper with confetti polenta and their signature papaya sauce) is tangy and lives up to its hype. But what put the experience over the top was the drink, a fruity rum cocktail, in our hand while we dug our toes in the sand, as the gentle breeze made for another idyllic sunset. According to the Aruba Tourism Authority, more than half of those who visit return, and it’s easy to see why.

Wat Suthat, a stunning temple in the Old City, is home to a bronze Buddha more than 25 feet tall. The main hall is impressively decorated in floorto-ceiling murals that date from 1850 and depict the Jakata Tales, stories of the previous lives of Buddha. More than 150 smaller but just as spectacular Buddha statues decorate the cloisters surrounding the complex.

Go on a canal tour Bangkok is known as the Venice of the East, thanks to its winding network of canals. Known as klongs, these waterways used to be the main means of transportation in Bangkok and are still a back alley to local life. It’s not unusual to see modest shacks next to modern townhouses as you cruise along the waterways. There are also temples, restaurants and other sites that are accessible if you’re looking to stretch your legs and explore.
Enjoy a puppet show The ancient art of Thai puppetry is still an active tradition in Bangkok. Elaborately carved puppets are each manipulated by several puppeteers on the same stage, acting out traditional folk tales with delightfully emotive storytelling that transcends any language barrier. Avoid the touristy theaters and check out a more unique experience at Baan Silapin Artist’s House. This artist’s collective space sits on Klong Bangkok Yai, in an open-air canal house with rustic wooden decor that, although renovated, is more than 200 years old.
Khao San Road
Go shopping Bangkok is a shopping mecca, and even if you’re short on time you can find great deals. Known as a bustling area where backpackers congregate, Khao San Road is packed with shops selling all sorts of cool and colorful Thai wares. Want to explore a night market? Then head to Asiatique. This open-air mall sits on the Chao Phraya River and is home to more than 1,000 stalls situated in four warehouse areas. Whether you’re looking for clothing, jewelry, or souvenirs, you’ll be able to find it here. Don’t be afraid to haggle!
Take a tuk tuk ride A visit to Bangkok is not complete without an exhilarating ride in one of these unique vehicles. Essentially a motorbike with a colorful cabin for passengers behind the driver, these mini taxis zip along streets at a frenetic pace. Be sure to negotiate the rate and destination before getting in, and don’t let the driver make pit stops to other sights or shops. Oh, and hold on tight.
Indulge at a restaurant Bangkok is one of the top destinations for street
food, but don’t let that dominate your culinary experience. Bangkok also has world-class restaurants that serve anything from traditional Thai to haute cuisine. The Never Ending Summer in Thornburi is a perfect stop. This chic restaurant, set in a renovated warehouse space inside the Jam Factory complex, cooks classic Thai dishes that tourists might not know, such as ko mu yang (grilled kurobuta pork collar) and yum tua puu (wing bean salad with grilled prawns, minced pork, and soft boiled eggs). The elegantly plated dishes are a fantastic contrast to the contemporary industrial decor.
Lounge at a rooftop bar To really experience Bangkok in all its vast glory, you have to see it from up high. There’s no better way to do that than with a cool cocktail in hand at one of the many rooftop bars, like Moon Barat the Banyan Tree Hotel. Sitting 61 stories high, this rooftop bar offers stunning 360 degree views as well as deliciously unique cocktails like the lychee ginger smash. If the weather suddenly turns you can head downstairs to the equally impressive Vertigo Too Lounge.
