President Francois Hollande shocked France on Thursday by announcing he would not seek a second term next year, acknowledging his deep unpopularity and making way for another leftist candidate to take on conservative Francois Fillon and far-right leader Marine Le Pen. The surprise announcement — effectively an admission that by running again he would hurt his party’s chances — marks the first time since France’s fifth Republic was created in 1958 that an incumbent president has not sought a second mandate. “I am aware today of the risk that going down a route that would not gather sufficient support would entail, so I have decided not to be a candidate in the presidential election,” a somber-looking Hollande said in a televised address. Dogged by high unemployment, Hollande is the least popular president in French polling history, yet his closest aides had consistently said he would run. REUTERS

POLICE: SON DISMEMBERS PARENTS, DISSOLVED BODIES IN ACID

Authorities have arrested a 28-year-old man accused of stabbing his parents to death, dismembering their bodies, and trying to dissolve pieces of their body in acid in an attempt to destroy evidence. Joel Michael Guy, Jr. was arrested at his apartment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and charged with two counts of first degree murder. Police say he visited his parents for Thanksgiving at their home in Knoxville, Tennessee and may have snapped after his parents told him they were going to financially cut him off.

DELTA PILOTS GET 30 PERCENT RAISE OVER THREE YEARS IN NEW CONTRACT

Delta Air Lines pilots voted to approve a contract delivering a 30 percent raise over three years as the aviation industry faces widespread demand for higher wages to fly planes at a time of large profits. The contract also allows the pilots to keep existing gains on profit sharing. Eighty-two percent of pilots who voted approved the deal, with 95 percent of eligible pilots voting, according to Delta’s unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, International. The approval comes after pilots rejected a tentative agreement last year, which some said offered wage increases at the expense of more lucrative profit-sharing.

University of Massachusetts Boston is hoping to expand beyond its commuter-school status with the official start of construction on the college’s first-ever dormitory on Thursday. The student housing complex is expected to offer 1,077 beds for firstyear students by the fall 2018 semester. Students at UMass Boston, the third-largest campus of the five-campus University of Massachusetts system, currently commute or live in nearby apartments that the university helps them find. Chancellor Keith Motley said that even though UMass Boston is thought of as a commuter school, he’s heard a strong demand from students for a dorm on campus. “Students from

Dorchester would still like to live out that college experience in a residence,” he said. “But we also have become attractive beyond the great city of Boston.” More than 2,000 students attend UMass Boston on international visas, according to the school’s website. There are 12,700 undergraduate students at UMass Boston. Beyond giving those students more options when they may not want to lease an apartment in the city, an on-campus environment would help all students, Motley said. “What makes this exciting for me is all the data about students living in close proximity to campus — when you’re engaged not only in the life of campus but with faculty and others in a different kind of way, when you put more hours into that life, you perform better in the classroom,” he said. The school’s survey found that 70 percent of students would opt to live in on-campus housing, Motley said. Rather than worry most commuter students won’t fill those

beds, he said he expects there to be a wait list. The student housing development will span 260,000 square feet and offer students more than a place to sleep. It will be two buildings, ranging from seven to 12 stories, and include “living-learning” amenities like seminar rooms, study lounges and a 23,000-square-foot dining hall. All those amenities come with a hefty price tag: The housing complex is a $120 million project. UMass Boston is currently struggling with a $26 million budget deficit — prompting Motley to send a letter this month announcing “the current need for substantial deficit reductions” — but the university said it will accrue no debt from the project. Construction is being financed through a public-

private partnership. The UMass Building Authority has contracted with Capstone Development Partners to lease a portion of the campus to construct the housing complex. It’s being financed with tax-exempt bonds issued by MassDevelopment, “the state’s quasipublic finance and development authority,” according to a news release from the university. “When we were founded years ago, our founders talked about not only standing with the city but producing a public option for students that was equal to or better than private education options in a great higher education system like Boston,” Motley said. “This is building on that founding promise.”

At the first game following the Boston Marathon bombings, Red Sox star David Ortiz famously and emotionally told fans, “This is our f—ing city and nobody is going to dictate our freedom!” In, Boston where being a die-hard sports fan is in the genes, “Big Papi’s” statement was met with a warm embrace. That kind of camaraderie has earned Boston the distinction of being the No. 2 sports city in the nation, according to a recent study by WalletHub, a personal finance website.

Podcast chronicles tale of Boston Strangler A new true-crime podcast gives “Serial”-like treatment to the case of the Boston Strangler. But unlike “Serial,” which investigated the little-known killing of a teenage woman in Maryland, the 12-part “Stranglers” chronicles the infamous story of the Boston Strangler or stranglers, as the title suggests. Over 19 months, between June 1962 and January 1964, at least 13 women were killed in Boston — most of them raped, their naked bodies staged in strange positions in their homes.

Boston-based journalist Portland Helmich hosts the weekly podcast, in which she will pore over the evidence and introduces the victims. The case captured the public’s attention as the killing spree continued. Women in the Boston area lived in fear as the strangler appeared not to discriminate among age, race or class. Controversial gas pipeline through West Roxbury is set to begin flowing The energy company behind the West Roxbury Pipeline in Boston announced on Thursday that the system would begin operating, while opponents vowed to keep fighting to have it removed, saying it poses major health risks to the surrounding area. Nancy Wilson, a West Roxbury resident who has been a vocal critic of the project since plans for it were announced in 2014, is still hoping the pipeline will be shut down. She said the line will operate at a higher pressure than others — making it calamitous if it were to explode — and because it was placed about 100 feet from a quarry where dynamite is often used. “This is a clear case of profits over people,” she said Thursday. “We are simply collateral damage. We are disposable — that is the attitude of this company.” The West Roxbury pipeline is a 5-mile-long project by Houston-based

Spectra Energy, and is part of a larger aim to increase the natural gas supply in New England. Protesters have voiced their opposition for the last two years and as recently as Monday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and other officials sent letters to Algonquin Gas Transmission, a subsidiary of Spectra, to air concerns about potential safety hazards. Seeking to quell concerns, Spectra said that the Algonquin system, which travels through New England, New York and New Jersey, “has operated safely in the region for more than 60 years.”

“The AIM [Algonquin Incremental Market] Project facilities are designed, constructed, operated and maintained to meet or exceed federal safety standards and regulations,” Spectra said. But in a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Mayor Walsh said that city officials did not receive what is known as a “heat release map” for the pipeline despite requests. That map “is essential for evacuation planning in the case of an emergency,” the mayor said. In a letter signed by Boston’s police and fire commissioners, authorities say Spectra failed to notify BPD and BFD about important safety information ahead of the start of the pipeline’s operation. Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos Facebook Inc. is working on automatically flagging offensive material in live video streams, building on a growing effort to use artificial intelligence to monitor content, said Joaquin Candela, the company’s director of applied machine learning. The social media company has historically relied mostly on users to report offensive posts, which are then checked by Facebook employees against company “community standards.” Decisions on especially thorny content issues that might require policy changes are made by top executives at the company. Candela told reporters

that Facebook increasingly was using artificial intelligence to find offensive material. It is “an algorithm that detects nudity, violence or any of the things that are not according to our policies,” he said. The company already had been working on using automation to flag extremist video content, as Reuters reported in June. Now the automated system also is being tested on Facebook Live, the streaming video service for users to broadcast live video. Using artificial intelligence to flag live video is still at the research stage,

and has two challenges, Candela said. “One, your computer vision algorithm has to be fast, and I think we can push there, and the other one is you need to prioritize things in the right way so that a human looks at it, an expert who understands our policies, and takes it down.” REUTERS

There’s really only one big franchise this season, and it’s a doozy: “Star Wars.” No, we’re not talking about the breathlessly, maniacally anticipated “Episode 8,” which won’t arrive till next December. It’s “Rogue One” (Dec. 16), modestly subtitled as merely “A Star Wars Story.” A side tale/prequel to the events of the first “Star Wars,” it follows a rag-tag, Force-free group of rebels, led by Felicity Jones’ orphaned rapscallion, who steal the plans for the

still-being-constructed first Death Star. Better yet, from the looks of it, it’s not merely a slavish recreation of the original trilogy. It looks like its own new thing. Actually, we tell a lie: There is a new film that wants to at least spurn a franchise. That would be “Assassin’s Creed” (Dec. 21), which attempts to turn a big time video game into the next cinematic cash cow. We can’t make heads or tails of the story: Michael Fassbender

plays an armed hunter during the Spanish Inquisition — but he’s really a guy from the future, sent back into the body of an ancestor, for some reason. Whatever: It’s a chance to see Fassbender and Marion Cotillard reunite after last year’s brooding “Macbeth” (also directed by Justin Kurzel, as it happens). And any movie with Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Charlotte Rampling can’t be another stupid video game movie, right?

Do you enjoy movies not based on already existing sources or attached to an ongoing franchise? Because Hollywood still makes those, sometimes! “La La Land” (Dec. 9, limited; Dec. 16 wide) may not be entirely original; it’s simply a throwback to the old time musical. But it’s one of the few things this season that will make you happy — before it makes you sad. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone play struggling Los Angelenos who find love and fancy footwork. Of course, in Hollywood, original ideas aren’t always so original. Technically “Office Christmas Party” (Dec. 9) counts as something we’ve technically never seen before, in that no one’s made an all-star comedy about a raucous, drug-fueled

office holiday party. So does “Collateral Beauty” (Dec. 16) which sort of sounds like “A Christmas Carol,” only weirder: A depressed Will Smith finds himself visited by the spiritual embodiments of love (Keira Knightley), time (Jacob Latimore) and death (Helen Mirren).

“Why Him?” (Dec. 23) is simply a mismatched duo comedy with Bryan Cranston and James Franco. And “Sing” (Dec. 21), about singing animals, sounds like “Happy Feet” but with more than penguins. Sometimes an original film, like “Gravity,” will birth a slew of copycats. And so we have “Passengers” (Dec. 21), which ups the stranded space cadets to two: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are accidentally awakened on board a ship sometime well before their destination’s been reached. Even a truly rare film, like the children’s fantasyhorror-drama “A Monster Calls” (Dec. 23) — about a young boy with a dying mom (Felicity Jones again) visited by a story-telling colossus — is based on a book.

Remember when Liam Neeson didn’t do action movies? He’s back to dramas in Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” KERRY BROWN

Hollywood doesn’t really make big, long, serious adult dramas anymore — unless Martin Scorsese is doing the asking. “Silence” (Dec. 23) finds a group of Jesuit priests (including Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson) undergoing intense torture on their trip to spread the Gospel to anti-Christian 17th century Japan. Does this sound like Oscar talk? Because ’tis the season for that, too! Another heavy hitter is “Fences” (Dec. 28), in which Denzel Washington directs himself and Viola Davis as the fractured couple of August Wilson’s prized 1983 play. (Both actors won Tonys for their 2010 Broadway production.) We’re assuming “Patriots Day” (Dec. 21, limited release) is an Oscar contender, too, since it’s about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing — even though it’s the slightly trashier kind of made by Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor,” “Deepwater Horizon”). Meanwhile, we’re not sure if “Hidden Figures” (Dec. 28) qualifies as “all-caps serious.” The tale of three AfricanAmerican women (Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae) who became instrumental in the 1960s space race, it’s more a classic feelgood weepie — even more so now that half the country voted for you-know-who.

Erudite viewers don’t often go to the art house to laugh. But laugh they will at “Toni Erdmann” (Dec. 28), even though it’s a three-hour comedy from Germany, not exactly the birthplace of comedy. The plot is ready-made for an Adam Sandler remake: A workaholic is none too happy when her eccentric father crashes her life, pretending to be a wealthy ambassador (or life coach, or businessman, depending who’s asking), complete with a hilarious combo of bad wig and worse fake teeth. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry (a bit) and you might just leave thinking this silly film is a serious masterpiece.

There are plenty of name directors, too. Jim Jarmusch is back with “Paterson” (Dec. 28), a slow, leisurely and rich look at a week in the life of a poet/bus driver (Adam Driver, almost scarily chill). Mike Mills (“Beginners”) hangs with Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig in 1970s California in “20th Century Women” (Dec. 28). “I, Daniel Blake” (Dec. 23) finds English social realist Ken Loach (“The Wind That Shakes the Barley”) back to observing the plights of the working class. Pedro Almodovar has another red-hot melodrama-mystery with “Julieta” (Dec. 21).

You might not know the name of Chilean director Pablo Larrain, but maybe you will now. Already a great, thanks to the likes of like his Pinochetera dramedy “No,” the filmmaker has two renegade biopics. First, there’s “Jackie” (Dec. 2), which features Natalie Portman’s Oscar-talk of a turn as Mrs. Kennedy, seen in the immediate aftermath of the JFK assassination. And on Dec. 16 we get “Neruda,” which isn’t a look at the life of poet Pablo Neruda but about the time he went underground and was hunted down by a dogged government agent (Gael Garcia Bernal).

For proof that Brad Pitt might be the world’s current funniest human, we present 2008’s “Burn After Reading.” FOCUS FEATURES

After their grizzled, grisly noir “No Country for Old Men,” the Coen brothers made a comedy. It was a very funny comedy. But it was arguably — or maybe even inarguably — the bleaker, scarier film. Nevermind George Clooney making Tex Avery cartoon faces or Brad Pitt’s amusing hair (and even more hilarious car seat-dancing). The fragmented tale of very stupid people involved in harebrained schemes gone violently awry is secretly one of their blood curdling looks at the insignificance of humankind. Characters’ bloody ends are accidentally orchestrated by people they’ve never met; the nicest one is ended with a hatchet to the neck. By the end, the survivors agree never to do it again — without having the foggiest what “it” was. You watch it the first time to laugh; you watch it again to cringe.

Here’s something you couldn’t do in theaters: Thanks to the magic of streaming video, you can watch Richard Linklater’s hyper-praised experiment in chunks. You’re meant to take it in one big glop, let the 12 years in the life of a not-so-average Texas kid (Ellar Coltrane) — which was, of course, filmed over 12 years — wash over you like a cosmic head trip. Or you could stop at the end of every year, take a big break, then return to the next bit.

Each time our hero — and his parents, played by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, plus his sister (Linklater’s own daughter, Lorelei) — will have aged just a bit more. You’ll even be able to focus on the details of each episode, rather than speeding through it. You don’t necessarily have to take 12 years to watch it; after all, thanks to the fickle nature of Netflix rights issues, “Boyhood” will probably be gone from their realm in a month anyway.

We all need something nice now. Hugs. Kisses. Excessive amounts of alcohol. Movies about cute talking bears who like marmalade. “Paddington” is the latter — a film about a well-meaning but clumsy Peruvian bear in a raincoat. The film has our furry hero unwittingly wreak untold havoc: destroying a pleasant English family’s bathroom; getting lost in a tube station; skateboarding. If it was American, it would be unbearable. Thankfully, it’s British, which means the overqualified live action stars — Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Nicole Kidman — are inspired

Neil Goldberg was always a Christmas ornament collector. The founder of Cirque Dreams — the Florida-based production company that creates theatrical, Euro-inspired cirque shows and sends them around the world — has been picking up an ornament here and there since the age of 8. “It was an odd thing for a Jewish boy in New York to do,” he laughs. “But I used to pick up [ornaments] off the discarded Christmas trees at the end of the season. ment collection [now] has more than 10,000 pieces — Faberge eggs, surfboards from Hawaii.” With several Cirque Dreams productions under his belt, Goldberg soon had the idea to combine his passions, creating a holiday show that used conceptual (and literal) ornaments as catalysts for a series of vignettes. The $2 million ”Holidaze,” now in its eighth year, arrives at the Boch Center’s Shubert Theatre on Dec. 9 for six performances through Dec. 11. In the two-act show, the 30 Cirque Dreams artists spin scenes of synonymous holiday lore while performing jaw-dropping feats and acrobatics that send them soaring into the air, scaling a 20-foottall Christmas tree, in the midst of a department

store frenzy and constructing a truly larger than life gingerbread cookie. “I love gingerbread cookies,” Goldberg says. “And I thought, ‘How fabulous would it be to recreate the actual making of the biggest gingerbread house and cookie and put it on stage?” “Holidaze” does just that, mimicking the construction of a 30-foot-tall gingerbread cookie at the end of act one. The “visual feast,” as Goldberg calls it, lasts no longer than four minutes and 30 seconds. “We’re cognizant of audience members’ attention spans,” he explains. “We never let anything

Things to watch for as Patriots host Rams

In the fast-paced NFL, rarely is there time to take a look back. The biggest game is always the next game. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady certainly haven’t rested on their laurels, anyways, and that’s one of the reasons they continue to be such a dynamic coach-player duo. But it will be hard for Patriots fans not to think back to where it all really began in the Brady Era this Sunday when the Rams come to town (1 p.m., Fox). It was Super Bowl XXXVI that the No. 199 pick in the 2000 NFL

Draft, along with a strong defense, took down the “Greatest Show on Turf” led by MVP Kurt Warner and Offensive Player of the Year Marshall Faulk. A dynasty was born in New England. The Rams? Well, it hasn’t gone smoothly since. Since that loss, that franchise has had exactly one winning season (2003). They’ve lost at least 13 games per season four times. This year they moved back to Los Angeles — and the losses followed them. They go into Sunday’s game with a 4-7 record, one loss away from another season without a winning record. The Patriots have been celebrating the 15th anniversary (has it really been that long?) of the 2001 championship team all season long. The organization recently announced that on Sunday, 40 players from that team

will return to Gillette Stadium for the first reunion of the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship team. Somewhere, Faulk is still kicking rocks.

1Brady all alone

If the Patriots win on Sunday, it will be Tom Brady’s 201st, which will move him into sole position of first place all-time, ahead of Peyton Manning. The Patriots have the best record at home since 2002 (112-22, .836). They have the best record in December since 2001 (54-10, .844). Do the Rams have a shot? Don’t bet the money line, folks. But there is this: Brady (knee), Martellus Bennett (ankle/ shoulder), and Julian Edelman (foot) are all banged up. Oh, and in case you hadn’t heard — Rob Gronkowski is likely out

for the next eight weeks as he’ll have back surgery on Friday. The Patriots will need Brady, Bennett and Edelman close to full strength as they’ll face a stout defense. Before the Rams gave up 49 points to the Saints last Sunday, they hadn’t allowed more than 17 points in their previous four games.

The Rams are relatively unfamiliar to the Patriots, much like the 49ers were. The two teams have only met three times since Super Bowl XXXVI, with the last game played in 2012. On top of that, Rams rookie QB Jared Goff has only played in two regular season games, so there’s not a lot to go off of. After a

bumpy NFL debut against the Rams, Goff threw three touchdowns against the Saints. “I think you have to watch the film and see the talent level and see what he’s capable of and be ready for that,” Devin McCourty said of Goff. “You can’t go in there and just think that the guy is going to play bad just because he is young.”

3Special attention

It’s great for the Rams that their punter is the best in the business, because they sure do need him a lot. All joking aside, Rams punter Johnny Hekker could be the Rams’ MVP this season and is a guaranteed lock to represent them in the Pro Bowl. Hekker leads the

league in punts (64), gross punting yards (2,989), longest punt (78 yards), punts inside the 20 yard line (35), fair catches (27), and average return yard on punts (4.5 yards). He’s second in net punting average (44.9 yards). In other words, the Patriots may force a lot of punts, but it won’t often mean good field position. He’s so impressive that he was the first player Belichick mentioned during his weekly Wednesday press conference. “This guy looks like as good a player as I’ve ever seen at that position,” he said of Hekker. “He’s a tremendous weapon in his ability to punt the ball, punt it inside the 20, directional kick it, involved in fakes, can throw, can run, very athletic.”

Dolphins at Ravens (-3.5) The Dolphins have caught fire, winning six straight games, yet are considerable underdogs against the mediocre Ravens. Though Baltimore’s rush defense can be stingy (best in the league at just 74.7 YPG allowed), Jay Ajayi and the Dolphins have taken it to some of the better run stoppers in the league during their sixgame run, including the top-10 rated Steelers, Jets and Chargers. And while the Ravens defense is among the better units in the league at preventing points (18.3 PPG allowed, fourth-best in the NFL), Baltimore’s offense led by Joe Flacco has been very shaky. Just last week, they squandered many an

offensive opportunity in a 19-14 win over Cincinnati and had to have kicker Justin Tucker more or less win the game for them. Miami’s pass stoppers are among the best in the league (ninth), so Flacco could be in for even more headaches on Sunday. The Dolphins are the best bet of the week. The pick: Dolphins +3.5 Bualo Bills at Oakland Raiders (-3) The Raiders have won eight of their last nine games (including this current five-game winning streak) and look like one of the elite teams in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Bills continue to get credit for playing hard and keeping games close, but have failed to cover in four of their last five contests. Buffalo’s wins over Cincinnati (off a bye week no less) and Jacksonville in successive weeks were not that impressive, while Oakland has beaten (in order) Denver, Houston and a desperate Carolina
