MCCONNELL WON’T GIVE TIMELINE FOR OBAMACARE REPLACEMENT

1

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Monday the Senate will move to repeal President Barack Obama’s healthcare law shortly after Jan. 1, but declined to give a timeline for a plan to replace it. McConnell said the Senate would vote as soon as it returns from its year-end recess to repeal Obamacare. “And then we will work expeditiously to come up with a better program than current law, because current law is simply unacceptable and not sustainable,” he said. Asked repeatedly, McConnell did not give any timeline for when the Republicans would offer their own plan. He said they would be consulting with different “stakeholders.”

CALIF. MAN ACCUSED OF HATE CRIME IN STABBING NEAR MOSQUE

2

A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing an antiMuslim hate crime and another was being sought by authorities in connection with the weekend stabbing of a worshiper near a Southern California mosque, police said on Monday. Coming amid a surge in harassment and intimidation of Muslims reported by the FBI, the incident occurred late Saturday night outside the Masjid Al-Rasool mosque in the town of Simi Valley, about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, according to police Commander Robert Brill. The confrontation began as a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical fight between the two suspects and the victim, who had attended prayer services at the mosque that evening, and a number of his friends, Brill said. WHATSAPP, SKYPE SET TO COME UNDER NEW EU SECURITY RULES

Messaging services such as Microsoft’s Skype and Facebook’s WhatsApp face stricter rules on how they handle customer data under new security laws due to be proposed by the European Union, according to a draft document seen by Reuters. The EU executive wants to extend some rules that now only apply to telecom operators to web companies offering calls and messages using the internet, known as “Over-The-Top” (OTT) services, according to the draft. Web services will have to guarantee the confidentiality of communications and obtain users’ consent to process their location data, mirroring similar provisions included in a separate data protection law due to come into force in 2018. Should you buy a real or artificial Christmas tree? Artificial trees may be reusable, but agriculture experts say that it isn’t harmful to chop down farm-grown trees each year. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

For some, the beginning of the holiday season coincides with a trek to pick out a Christmas tree. But not for Gelinda Hawkins. She has had the same artificial tree for 20 years. “I can use it, technically, for forever,” she said, while holiday shopping in the Watertown Target. “It saves money and you’re not cutting down trees.” More Americans seem to be following Hawkins’ way of thinking. Eightyone percent of all Christmas trees that will adorn homes this holiday — 100 million households across the country — will be artificial, according to a survey conducted by Nielsen for the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA). ACTA is a nonprofit that says it aims to help people pick between real and artificial trees by

providing tips on buying each kind. However, Tim O’Connor, president of the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA), an advocacy group for the Christmas tree industry, doesn’t trust ACTA’s findings. “The American Christmas Tree Association is the association for the fake tree industry,” he said. “They of course have concocted a study that says ‘more people like our product than the real thing.’ I don’t buy that.” On its tip page for choosing a type of Christmas tree, ACTA says that “unlike living trees, artificial Christmas trees are an investment.” But is that investment one that’s better for the environment? “The first-ever ‘Life Cycle Analysis’ comparing the average real Christmas tree purchased in the U.S. to the average artificial Christmas tree purchased in the U.S. concluded that neither type of tree has a measurable impact on the environment,” said Jami Warner, executive director of ACTA. Warner said that ACTA recommends families buy the type of tree that fits their lifestyle best, noting both can have advantages. “An artificial tree can

“Both types of trees can be recycled, although there are more programs available for recycling real trees.” Jami Warner

be reused year after year and is very easy to display and take down at season’s end. A real tree has that unmistakable Christmas tree smell but must be watered daily, which is an absolute must, and can be messy,” he said. “Both types of trees can be recycled, although there are more programs available for recycling real trees.” ACTA encourages people to buy locally grown Christmas trees if they want a real one, and luckily that’s pretty easy to do in Massachusetts. There are more than 400 farms here either exclusively growing Christmas trees

or which have them as a significant portion of their annual business, according to John Lebeaux, commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. That’s about 3,000 acres in the commonwealth just for cultivating Christmas trees — a net economic value of approximately $1.4 million a year. The biggest advantage for an artificial tree seems to be that you can reuse it, but there’s some disparities on how effective that is. A 2010 study cited by and sponsored by ACTA found that it takes the same energy to make one artificial tree as it does to raise six real trees. The study concluded that the environmental impacts of one artificial tree, if used for more than eight years, is “environmentally friendlier” than buying eight (or more) Christmas trees over that same time period. Those findings differ starkly from a 2009 study by an environmental consulting firm in Canada, then called Ellipsos. That study found that a natural tree contributes almost 40 percent less carbon dioxide emission than an artificial tree.

Cambridge launches parking payment app for Harvard Square The mobile payment method lets drivers monitor how much time they have left on the meter. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

The days of running to feed that parking meter you think is about to expire but aren’t sure will soon be a thing of the past in Cambridge. Paying for parking has gone high-tech. The city unveiled a new way for drivers to pay parking meters in Harvard Square, one that doesn’t involve feeding quarters or returning to your car to add another hour. Cambridge is now running the Passport mobile parking app. The smartphone technology can be used at all metered spaces in Harvard Square.

The Passport app lets drivers pay for meters with their smartphones. CITY OF CAMBRIDGE

That includes the offstreet parking lot between Mount Auburn and Bennett streets, according to the city. The city is catching up to Boston, which has offered the ParkBoston app as a way for drivers to pay meters with their smartphones since January 2015. Among the benefits, drivers can monitor their

session to view remotely how much time they have left until the meter expires. Joseph Barr, Cambridge’s director of the Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department, said the city was “working to provide a customer-friendly experience to our users, so we’re looking forward to introducing this new

payment technology.” With Passport, “drivers will never have to walk back to the meter or risk a parking citation because they didn’t have enough quarters — everything can be managed easily and conveniently from their phones,” Barr said in a statement. Users will be able to purchase parking time through Passport with a debit or credit card, extend their meter time (but only until the maximum time allowed, which is most commonly two hours) and also view all their parking history. The app is only offered in Harvard Square right now, but the city plans to expand the app’s reach to all of its 3,000 metered spots. Drivers can download the PassportParking app for free from the App Store and Google Play, as well as manage their parking online at ppprk.com.

BRIEF Donate to Metro’s Toy Drive In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Metro is once again launching Metro Magic, our annual toy drive for underprivileged children in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. This year marks the 7th anniversary of the toy drive, which was renamed in memory of the man who oversaw the project for more than four years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor in chief. Mr. Metcalf passed away in 2013 from colon cancer at the age of 50. Mr. Metcalf lit up every year as he saw the faces of children unwrap their holiday gifts. It is our goal to keep that magic alive. “Tony felt we should use the size and scale of Metro to help other’s and he used enormous dedication and force to execute the project and every year make children in need a little happier during the holiday season,” said Metro’s Chief Executive Officer Yggers Mortensen. “I am proud to continue this project in honor of Tony and I hope all our readers, suppliers and members of the Metro team will help to make this yet another great Metro

Magic year.” Metro has created a wish list at the Target website that readers can access by going to Metro.us and clicking on the Tony’s Metro Magic story on the homepage. From there, just choose the toys you wish to donate, pay online using Target’s secure payment system, and your gifts, along with your name attached, will be delivered to Metro’s offices in each city. This season, we hope you will remember the children who will spend the holidays in shelters or who may not have gifts to open. Even one small gift can make a big difference in a child’s holiday season. It’s good to receive a gift. It’s better to give one. METRO

MBTA: Cheaper to replace than repair Red Line train cars The state says it will cost $280 million to replace aging rail cars. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

The MBTA’s Red Line is getting ready for a major upgrade, officials announced Monday. The line’s entire fleet of cars, some of which have been in operation since the mid-1970s, will cost $280 million to replace, but T officials said that’s less than the cost of an earlier plan to repair 84 cars. In a media briefing, state Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack said the new plan “represents an important difference” in the T’s philosophy for upgrading its aging infrastructure.

The last time the MBTA replaced Red Line cars was 1994. FLICKR

The move will save taxpayers $310,000 per car over the repair efforts, and have a more greater long-term outcome to fully replace 120 to 134 Red Line cars, WCVB reported. “It represents what we’ve been trying to do with the MBTA,” Pollack told State House News

Service. “A different way of thinking, a different way of acting.” Every train car in the Red Line’s fleet is slated to be replaced by 2023 under the new plan. A Chinese company, China Railroad Rolling Stock Corp., is building a factory in Springfield to manufacture the cars, and is

already contracted to replace the entire Orange Line fleet and more than 130 other Red Line cars. The Fiscal Management Control Board’s decision came on the day of the first real snowfall of the season in Massachusetts. The last time the Red Line’s fleet underwent an extensive replacement was 1994. Many of the fleet’s older cars have obsolete engines, which contributed to the massive delays seen systemwide during the crippling blizzards of 2015. Many of the stalled trains failed because their motors run on direct current — or DC — power, which breaks down easily in wet weather conditions. The new trains will have alternating current motors, which are more durable in inclement weather.

Beyonce and Mariah take a selfie

‘Flip or Flop’s’ Tarek and Christina El Moussa are splitting up Another one of HGTV’s family-friendly couples is shattering the facade of peaceful perfection. Just a couple of months after some disturbing claims were made about the church that “Fixer Upper’s” Chip and Joanna Gaines belong to, TMZ is reporting that Tarek and Christina El Moussa of “Flip or Flop” are separated. In May, there was a domestic incident at the El Moussa’s Orange County home that involved a “possibly suicidal male” with a gun. When authorities

showed up, they found Tarek on a nearby hiking trail and made him surrender his weapon. Authorities confiscated five guns from their home. The couple told TMZ that the May incident was an “unfortunate misunderstanding” and that they will continue to work through this [separation] process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together.” So maybe “Flip or Flop” will survive this? But as fans of the show, we can say Tarek

never listens to his wife, and that’s such a deal-breaker in 2016.

Beyonce and Mariah Carey took a selfie together that was too fierce for the internet to handle. What we know is that Beyonce attended Mimi’s Christmas concert in New York on Sunday. But during that break she still managed to claim the top spot as the most-followed person on Instagram, with more than 104 million followers. And now Page Six is reporting that the

24-year-old singer just inked a deal with Coach to design her own line and be featured in the company’s ad campaigns. The former Disney star is set to receive $10 million for her part. When Mariah arrived at her dressing room, via chaise lounge carried by shirtless men, and saw Beyonce there munching away at her capers, Mimi was annoyed, but still happy to have someone of her own caliber to chat with. They shared tips on the best means of storing all their awards, swapped code names

to use when checking into hotels, and toasted to Mariah still being divorced from Nick Cannon. They took a selfie to commemorate the occasion because they respect each other so much. Mariah thanked Beyonce for dressing down on her special night. Beyonce wasn’t even offended — she understood. Diva friends are the best.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom officially divorce The end of 2016 hasn’t been grim for at least one member of the Kardashian family. We’re talking about the fact that Lamar Odom has officially run out of time to stage another medical emergency that holds off his divorce from Khloe Kardashian. Back in October, the couple reached a long-awaited settlement and signed off on the terms of their divorce. “Entertainment Tonight” has obtained documents, signed by a

judge, that officially end their marriage. Khloe initially filed for divorce in 2013. Last year, following Lamar’s drug overdose, the reality star called off the divorce to support him in his recovery. But the couple still weren’t able to make it work together and Khloe — who is ating Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson — refiled for divorce in May. As of December 17, Khloe and Lamar will be officially single. Finally.

Amazingly, Malcolm McDowell and Bernadette Peters never worked together before “Mozart in the Jungle,” whose third season just hit Amazon. It makes sense: One is a British bad boy, still best known for “A Clockwork Orange.” The other is a Broadway god and Stephen Sondheim muse. So do these two thespians — who have considerable chemistry on “Mozart,” as a grouchy former conductor and president of his longtime symphony — have any past in common? As it happens, yes: Musicals! McDowell did a few in school. Unlike Peters, he abandoned it. Well before his film debut, in 1969’s “If…”,

In the third season of “Mozart in the Jungle,” now on Amazon, Malcolm McDowell and Bernadette Peters resume their roles as a former conductor and the director of his old New York symphony. JESSICA MIGLIO

McDowell cut his teeth on the theater, doing one play a week. “I didn’t know how to act! I had no idea,” McDowell tells us. “The poor people who came to see these plays basically paid for my drama school.” The grind burned him out. Luckily he wound up at the Royal Shakespeare Company — but that, too, he felt was a drag. “As soon as I got into

the Royal Shakespeare Company, I realized what it was, which was basically drunken gambling and whoring,” he remembers. “I decided I better get out of this. I was always trying to get out of things.” He met with the company’s head, the illustrious Peter Hall, and told him he was leaving. “[Hall] said, ‘What are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I’m going into film!’ And he said, ‘Good luck.’”

The rest is history. Indeed, McDowell presently has over 200 film credits on his résumé. Bernadette Peters, meanwhile, only has just over 20. She’s been busier on stage and in television. A quarter of those film titles hail from the ’70s, when she

Heaven.” Why the unusual early period, then? “Because I said yes to every film!” Peters tells us. “I thought those films were so strange. I finally said, ‘I need to stop doing these fakakta films.’ Then I did ‘Pennies from Heaven.’ That was not fakakta. I realized from then on out that I wanted to do movies that were actually written well, or where the role was incredible. I didn’t want to do it just to do it.” As to “Mozart in the Jungle,” its new episodes play very differently now. The show has always dealt with the difficulties a classical art faces in our age. Now, with the new administration coming in, it seems the arts will be in even deeper peril. “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet,” McDowell says. “Just keep your passport in order.”

You’ve been in show business since college. Is there anything you know now that you wish you knew then? No, because I was too naive back then. So Donald Trump, a reality TV star, is going to be our president. Any thoughts on that? My thought is that we get what we are. This is going to be a business corporate utopia for some. Can that work? I’m not sure. The campaign was almost like a circus, but Trump is brilliant at the media. He knows exactly what he’s doing — the tweets in the middle of the night. I can only hope for the best. I say give him a chance as opposed to those who want to get rid of him the first day he’s inaugurated. I’m not thrilled about it, but this is America and somehow we always come back. To some people this is a tremendous high. To me it’s a tremendous C-minus of who we are and what we understand. I also think the internet and the are to blame. cellphone a You know, I [Pause] Yo had the first h cellphone on c television with te Zack. the coin, I think a cellphone and the internet has been the worst thing upon our social structure because we have lots of information, but no knowledge. Ain’t that the truth. You can find anyone who agrees with you. I mean you can go to the internet and you’ll find eventually someone who agrees with you, and Trump understands that. He tells people what they want to hear and now that he’s the presidentelect, he’s had enough of them. It’s going to be a very interesting ride. It’s the culture that’s been created. Yes, and I think that the presidential election is a two-year reality show. At the end of the day — and I’m a Democrat — who would you rather watch for the next four years on television? And quite frankly, even as someone who’s not happy about what happened, I’d rather watch him than Hillary. It’s called show business.

What Katie Holmes wanted to do was direct. But she didn’t want to quit acting. The actress is both in front of the camera and behind it in “All We Had,” an indie drama about a cash-strapped mother (Holmes) and daughter (Stefania LaVie Owen). Holmes’ Rita has endured a lifetime of bad choices; her latest failure sends her and Owen’s Ruthie on the road; they break down in a small East Coast town and try to start anew. It’s not Holmes’ first directing job: She previously made the short documentary “Eternal Princess ” about teen gymnast Nadia Comaneci, and has since helmed an episode of the miniseries “The Kennedys After Camelot,” in which she plays Jackie O. Holmes, 37, talks to us about working with fellow actors and taking a new direction in her career. What made you first want to direct? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I love stories, I love storytelling. With “Eternal Princess,” it was about getting my feet wet. Then I got confident. I went to my agency’s book department and sought mate-

rial to do a narrative. What was it about Annie Weatherwax’s novel that made you think it would make a strong film? I loved all the characters. I love the humanity of each character, and the healing that took place with each of them. I also felt like Rita and Ruthie had such a unique mother-daughter relationship. They were always on the road, always moving. There are some unconventional qualities to their relationship. Sometimes Rita’s the daughter and Ruthie’s the mom, and vice versa. Was it always the idea to both act in and direct this? It was always the idea to do both, because I really liked the role. Also, I wanted to be in the scenes with my actors. I wanted to kind of direct from within. That’s an unusual way of working. I think sometimes directors aren’t always sure how to direct performers. I’ve had wonderful experiences with different directors. I know what I like when I’m being directed; I know the environ-

ment I like to have on set. I tried to create that for the actors. When you’re a director inside a scene with an actor, you can sort of lead the scene. I was really lucky, because Stefania LaVie was really open and free. We improv’d a lot. Everyone was willing to try different things. That’s rare. What do you think are the biggest challenges of directing actors? One of the biggest is time. Feeling rushed never helps a performance. You really don’t get what you need. We were able to have some rehearsal time. I always want more rehearsal time whenever I’m working as an actor. But that feeling of being rushed can happen, because you have to get a lot done in a short period of time. I tried to avoid that by working with them at lunch. We all became this moving team. We were always talking about it. Even when we were under the gun to finish in a certain amount of time, we were already sort of prepared for that. I hope it worked! [Laughs] GETTY IMAGES

Burke, who had wished Jay Z a happy birthday earlier that day, shared that Jay had told him he was pleased the two had taken the lead on the project, because while the rapper would have been satisfied celebrating the anniversary at the home with the gang and a bottle of wine, this way allowed the public to better understand what the album meant to the group of friends overall. “That album was ours just as much as it was Jay’s, Burke told a gathered crowd of rap and fashion aficionados. “It was a whole team. added. “It was a piece of everybody on each track. Burke admitted to not loving Jay’s rapping at first. “It wasn’t until I head ‘95 South’ (an unreleased demo that was recently made available on Tidal) and the time he battled DMX that I was like, ‘This dude incredis incred ible,’

Burke said. “He was talking about things we were living at that time. I’d never heard something like that, the way he explained the stories, and the cadence and timing and lyricism. Sporting the “Feelin’ It-branded apparel exclusive to Boston which featured the classic lyric “If y’all brothers ain’t talking ’bout large money, what’s the point? Jones explained how the music had inspired the clothes, saying, “We used graphics that came from the audio and wanted to bring that vision to life. “I’m far from a designer, but I’m a dotconnector, so sometimes you’ve gotta take someone that’s talented and help them become great, Jones sagely pointed out. The collection includes a “Feelin’ It hoodie, a baseball hat emblazoned with the “Reasonable Doubt 20th Anniversary logo and a number of T-shirts showcasing that logo and other weightmoving iconography that will be familiar to longtime Jay Z fans, and is available at Concepts at 9 JFK Street in Cambridge while supplies last. BRIEF Ohio lawmakers approve college campus concealed-carry bill Lawmakers in Ohio approved a bill on Friday that opens the way for licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons on college campuses, less than two weeks after a man injured 11 in a stabbing attack at Ohio State University. State senators passed the bill 22-8 after representatives approved it 68-25 late on Thursday, sending the bill to the desk of Republican Gov. John Kasich for his signature. If signed into law, the board of trustees at Ohio’s public universities would have the option to allow for concealed-carry on campuses. The legislation also removed a state ban on carrying a concealed weapon in public areas of airports and daycare centers, local media reported. Operators would be able to choose whether to prohibit guns in their buildings. However, late on Thursday the House of Representatives removed provisions from the bill that would have allowed gun owners to carry concealed weapons into government buildings such as libraries and city halls. The passage of the bill comes less than two weeks after 18-yearold Abdul Razak Ali Artan injured

11 people on the Ohio State campus in Columbus. Artan was shot dead by a police officer moments after he plowed his car into a crowd, jumped out and began stabbing people, police said. Law enforcement groups were split on the bill. The Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association and Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police opposed it, but a state sheriff’s group backed it in support. Critics say such laws endanger safety on campuses and public buildings; supporters say they could prevent mass shootings. Charleta Tavares, a Democratic state senator from Columbus who voted against the bill, said on Wednesday that she deferred to law enforcement who she said were opposed to the measure. “They are going to deal with the real life consequences of the passing of this bill.”

Republican state Sen. Bill Coley of Columbus countered Tavares’ claim the bill was not about keeping Ohioans safe. “There is no statistical evidence that this is not more safe,” he said. Ten U.S. states currently allow guns on campuses, according to the website of The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus. A law in Texas went into effect in August that allows people 21 and older with a concealed handgun license to carry pistols into classrooms and most buildings at public universities. The Texas law took effect as the University of Texas at Austin held a memorial to marking the 50th anniversary of one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. a college campus, when Charles Whitman killed 16 people in a shooting rampage. How to conquer the Sunday Scaries ISTOCK

weekly ski guides get ready for winter fun with metro boston’s weekly ski guides, with everything you need to know about where to go and what to bring when you hit the slopes. PICK UP METRO EVERY WEDNESDAY THROUGH THE END OF FEBRUARY

You know the feeling. It’s 3 p.m. on a Sunday, and the dread sets in. Popularly known as the “Sunday Scaries, the phenomenon of end-ofthe-weekend anxiety also goes by the Sunday Sads or the Sunday Blues. Will deFries, a 29-yearold writer for millennial humor site Post-Grad Problems, says he suffers from the Scaries “without fail, every single Sunday. It’s an inevitable thing, like your alarm going off: it’s Sunday, here they are! On Twitter, where deFries operates the handle @SundayScaries, he serves as a sort of de facto therapist, receiving countless DM’s and tweets from sufferers every seventh day of the week. “If we’re all scared collectively, we’re less scared individually, DeFries says. Meanwhile, Man Repeller also attempts to

create a community for the Sunday scared. The fashion and lifestyle publication has a column called the Sunday Scaries Diary, detailing the procrastination, writer’s block and stress eating that plagues so many Sundays. In a recent entry, Leandra Medine gets real: “The thing about Sunday Scaries is that the only way to make them go away is to do a bunch of s— you really don’t want to do. According to Dr. Megan Clary, a clinical psychologist in NYC, the trick is to carve out a window of time over the weekend to be productive, and then reward yourself by making plans with a friend. To fight inevitable procrastination, she says you have to make at least some aspect of the task appealing. Grading papers is a drag, but maybe if you do the work at your favorite coffee house, it will be a little less painful. Life coach Kara Loewentheil agrees avoiding your to-do list only makes the weekend anxiety worse. But a case of the

Sunday Scaries doesn’t necessarily indicate job dissatisfaction, she says. “If everyone who hated Sunday nights had chosen the wrong career, we’d have a lot of people in the wrong career. It’s often the way you’re thinking about your job, rather than your job itself, that causes stress and anxiety. Using cognitive techniques, Loewentheil attempts to change the often overly negative way people think. She helps her clients identify the triggers and then practice thinking more positively—within reason. You can’t go from “I hate this job, it makes me miserable, to “I love my job, but you could practice thinking something like, “I don’t always love my job, but so far, I’ve survived it.

STEELERS DEFLATED BALLS DOUBLE-STANDARD A JOKE OPINION

DANNY PICARD @dannypicard

At one point in time, I thought my greatest fear was that we’d have to talk about Deflategate every day for the rest of my life. But that’s no longer the case, thanks to the NFL’s response to another deflated football controversy. Though, when I say “controversy,” at this point, the only thing controversial is the NFL’s response. Which is why my new greatest fear is a world in which deflated footballs are now a “nothing to see here” issue. Let me tell you what happened. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that the Giants were suspicious of the Steelers’ footballs during their Week 13 game. After two

turnovers, according to Glazer, the Giants tested the PSI of the footballs, and found both footballs to be under the 12.5 PSI minimum. Later on Sunday night, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that the two balls the Giants “alerted the league” about were measured at 11.4 and 11.8 PSI. Then, after throwing no touchdowns and three interceptions in a 27-20 win over the Bills, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger responded to the report by saying, “We used Nerf balls.” Now, I can’t lie. When this first came out, I rolled my eyes. I hoped and prayed that we wouldn’t have “Deflategate 2” on our hands. Then I saw the statement on twitter from NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, just an hour after Glazer’s initial report. It read, “The officiating game ball procedures

“How about an investigation? Or at least an ‘Outside the Lines’ report on ESPN?” Danny Picard, on “Deflategate 2”

were followed and there were no chain of command issues. All footballs were in compliance and no formal complaint was filed by the Giants with our office.” That was easy. A little too easy. After all, isn’t NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell willing to do everything he can in order to protect the integrity of the game? I mean, was there even an investigation? Buried at the bottom of an ESPN.com story posted Monday morning at 4:45 a.m.: “The Steelers were not notified of any tips or inquiries throughout the week and first heard about it via Sunday’s report, a team source told

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.” Safe to say there was no investigation. But the NFL’s statement implies that perhaps they don’t believe this warranted an investigation. McCarthy points out that “no formal complaint” was filed by the Giants. Call me stupid, but I’d like to believe that when a team sends PSI information into the league — like Glazer said the Giants did — that constitutes as a complaint that’s formal enough to be taken seriously, given how the NFL reacted to PSI levels of the Patriots’ footballs. To me, it all comes back to that. It all comes back to the league’s reaction that resulted in the original “Deflategate.” A member of the Colts’ equipment staff took a football that D’Qwell Jackson intercepted, and told coach Chuck Pagano and GM Ryan Grigson that it seemed underinflated. Grigson then alerted NFL director of football operations Mike Kensil. The Colts “alerted” the league. Same way the Giants also reportedly

Big Ben won’t even get a slap on the wrist. GETTY IMAGES

“alerted” the league. Two years ago, an alert was good enough for an all-out investigation, and ultimately, a four-game suspension for Tom Brady, the loss of a firstand a fourth-round pick, and a fine of $1 million. Now, an alert isn’t formal enough to be worthy of an investigation. And no investigation apparently means that Mark Brunell and Jerome Bettis won’t be on ESPN’s “NFL Live” taking shots at Roethlisberger. Can you imagine if Brady responded to Deflategate accusations by saying he used Nerf balls? Wolf Blitzer would

have been going live from Patriot Place later that night. Look, nobody wanted a Deflategate sequel. But seeing how quickly the NFL has moved on from this latest accusation — after putting the full-court press on Brady and Patriots two years ago — I need something, anything. How about an investigation? Or at least an “Outside the Lines” report on ESPN? Unfortunately, none of that is coming. PSI accusations are no longer a serious issue. We’re living in a Bizarro Deflategate World, and it’s officially my worst nightmare.

Celtics hurtin’ without Thomas The C’s have dropped two straight without their little leader.

when Danny Ainge made this pick two years ago, but we’re starting to see what he saw. Rozier’s role has expanded as of late and he’s stepped up in fourth quarters, too. He’s 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from 3-point range in the fourth quarter this year, putting him first among Celtics regulars.

JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

When the Celtics dismantled the Orlando Magic on the road last week with Isaiah Thomas out with a strained groin, you just knew there were going to be some people saying they’re better without Thomas. Two games later, we can put an end to that foolishness. No, the Celtics are not better without their best scorer and arguably best fourth-quarter player. The last two losses against the Raptors and the Thunder — both with Thomas still on the sideline — would show that. Boston gave up doubledigit leads in both of those games and watched as the opposing teams’ superstar took over in the second half. Against the Raptors, it was Kyle Lowry who scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half. Against the Thunder, MVP candidate Russell Westbrook dropped 23 of his 37 points in the second half. In both games, the Celtics didn’t have enough offensively to match what they were allowing. They didn’t have their go-to guy down the stretch. Consider that Thomas averages 26 points per game, more than eight more per game than the C’s second-highest aver-

age scorer, Avery Bradley, and you can obviously understand what they’re missing. And we can take it a step further, too. Nobody in the NBA has gone to the free throw line more and hit more free throws than Thomas in the fourth quarter. He’s 69-for-80 from the line this season in the fourth quarter. For comparison, the player on the Celtics with the second-most free throw attempts in the fourth quarter this season is Marcus Smart … and he’s just 14-for-22. So while it’s easy to sit there and say, “Wow! Look how much more the ball is moving!” that’s not necessarily always a good thing. Down the stretch, wouldn’t you rather have

it in the hands of your best player? Unfortunately, it sounds like Boston could be without Thomas even longer, including Wednesday’s game in San Antonio. That doesn’t have to mean the game is a lost cause. The Celtics have plenty of youth who can step up in his absence. These three players have shown flashes of their potential:

Marcus Smart Smart is the team’s sixth man but has stepped in to start in place of Thomas. If you’re a fan of the plus/ minus stat, you like what you see. In both losses, Smart was a plus-11 and plus-12, respectively, the only starter to end on the plus side in both games.

His defense is superb. But Smart still struggles with his shot. He’s shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 29.0 percent from 3-point range. That’s

not going to cut it.

Terry Rozier A lot fans were left scratching their heads

Brown, a rookie, has seen more time on the court than any C’s rookie in recent history. It’s easy to see why. He’s as athletic as they come and looks to be improving his decision making. Like Smart, Brown was a plus in both recent losses. And get this: He has the highest fourth quarter field goal percentage (21-for-38, 55.3 percent) among C’s guards and small forwards this season.

metro.us/horoscopes Aries You need to put more energy into important relationships. The more enthusiasm and willingness to compromise you show, the more you will get in return.

Libra Take care of concerns that children or elders in your life have voiced. Your help will revive the love you have for each other and bring you satisfaction.

Taurus Think matters through, but don’t stop the flow of something that appears to be moving forward smoothly. Tying up financial matters will help you move ahead.

Scorpio Overspending will be a problem. Check over your investments, bank accounts and overall spending habits, and adjust your strategy in order to deal with debt.

Gemini It’s a good day to book travel plans. Take care of your responsibilities to ensure you have time to spend with friends and family as the year comes to a close.

Sagittarius Put more emphasis on your personal accomplishments and what you still want to achieve. A physical change will turn out favorable and boost your confidence.

Cancer You need to take care of pending financial or medical issues that you may have let slip. A clean slate before the year’s end will boost your morale.

Capricorn Expand your knowledge, not your responsibilities. Gather information and weigh the prospects carefully. Stick to moderate projects that factor in peace of mind.

Leo You must put partnerships first. It’s in your best interest to set the stage for a secure and prosperous upcoming year. Don’t leave anything to the last moment.

Aquarius Carrying out home improvements, updating your investments and making special plans with children, relatives or loved ones look promising. Favors will be granted.

Virgo A work opportunity looks promising, but may interfere with your relationships. Don’t disrupt your home life until you have concrete evidence that change is coming.

Pisces Don’t divulge secret information. Make travel plans or arrangements with friends or relatives you want to touch base with before the end of the year. EUGENIA LAST
