3 things you need to know TRUCK PLOWS INTO CROWD AT BERLIN MARKET, NINE DEAD
1
A truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market in the German capital Berlin on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring up to 50 others. German media, citing police at the scene, said first indications pointed to an attack on the market, situated at the foot of the ruined Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was kept as a bombed-out ruin after World War II. The attack was claimed by Islamic State. The truck careered into the Berlin market at what would have been one of the most crowded times for the Christmas market, when adults and children would be gathering in the traditional cluster of wooden huts that sell food and Christmas goods. Berlin police said nine people were killed. REUTERS
NC SIGNALS REVERSAL ON TRANSGENDER BATHROOM LAW
2
North Carolina’s governor-elect said a deal could soon bring the repeal of a state law limiting bathroom access for transgender people, following nine months of economic boycotts and protests over legislation protested as discriminatory. Under the law adopted in March, North Carolina was the first U.S. state to ban transgender people from using government-run restrooms that match their gender identity. The law, which catapulted the state to the forefront of U.S. culture wars over LGBTights, has been blamed for hundreds of millions of dollars in economic losses and the relocation of major sporting events. In a surprise development, incoming Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, said on Monday that Republican legislative leaders agreed to call a special session as soon as Tuesday to repeal the law, known as House Bill (H.B.) 2. REUTERS
US SEES CHINA RETURNING DRONE AS EARLY AS TUESDAY
3
The United States expects China to soon return an underwater U.S. drone after a Chinese naval vessel seized it last week, with one U.S. official telling Reuters the exchange could happen as early as Tuesday at an agreed spot in the South China Sea. China’s seizure of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) triggered a diplomatic protest and speculation about whether U.S. Presidentelect Donald Trump will point to the incident as proof of the need to take a tougher line with Beijing. A Chinese warship took the drone, which the Pentagon says uses unclassified, commercially available technology to collect oceanographic data, on Thursday about 50 nautical miles northwest of Subic Bay in the Philippines. As the Electoral College voted Monday to award Donald Trump the presidency, scores of opponents assembled at state capitals throughout the country with the hopes of urging them to break ranks and either abstain or vote for a different candidate. By late afternoon, protesters wrestled with their disappointment. The Associated Press reported that Trump had officially gained the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the presidency. In Boston, anti-Trump protesters rallied at the Massachusetts State House to add their voice
to the opposition. The state had overwhelmingly voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the election. A crowd of about 200 people gathered in front of the State House steps and chanted, “It’s unprecedented but we must unpresident him,” and, “See that freedom trail? Electors do not fail.” The 538 members of the Electoral College were expected to cast their votes in accordance with the popular vote of their state. It was anticipated that Trump would easily surpass the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. To deny Trump the Oval Office, 37 Republican electors would have had to abstain or vote for a candidate other than Trump. Participants in Boston said it was important to show unity with likeminded protesters across the country. Clinton took Massachusetts with 61 percent of the vote, com-

Renaldo Pearson, a Harvard administrator and activist, acknowledged to the crowd that his allegiances in the
presidential primary had been for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. But that fight was long over, he added. “This is not about Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders,” he said through a megaphone. “It’s about democracy.” Pearson told the crowd that he once participated in a march from Philadelphia to Washington to “call attention to money in politics.” The core issues, he said, are voter suppression and the need for campaign reform.

Boston-area cab companies sue Uber Laundromat sparked The cabbies argue that Uber is allowed to operate under less stringent regulations than taxis. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
Taxi cab drivers have long been at odds with ridehailing services that seem to have taken over city transportation. The rivalry is escalating. More than 30 Boston-area cab companies have filed a lawsuit against Uber, alleging that the company aims to be a monopoly thanks to its “predatory pricing.” It also argues that taxi drivers have worked hard to comply with state laws while Uber is violating those laws and deceiving customers. The lawsuit, filed on Friday, names Gov. Charlie Baker as a defendant as well. The cab

companies argue that the commonwealth has violated their constitutional rights because a recent state law exempts “Transportation Network Companies,” such as Uber and Lyft, from the same city and town regulations that govern the taxi industry. This means that the taxi companies and ridehailing services, which are direct competitors, are “being regulated by different government bodies in an entirely un-
equal way,” the lawsuit argues. Baker signed the bill into law on Aug. 5. It requires ride-hailing companies to pay a 20cent fee per ride. It also requires background checks on all drivers. “Gov. Baker, in collaboration with the legislature, was pleased to sign legislation establishing a regulatory framework for transportation network companies, that didn’t previously exist and prioritizes public
safety including some of the strongest ride-forhire background check systems in the nation,” said Billy Pitman, press secretary for Baker’s office, when asked about the lawsuit. The office did not comment on the pending litigation. Uber did not provide an official comment on the lawsuit either, but a representative noted that a similar case occurred in Chicago. There, a federal appeals court ruled that the city could apply different regulations to services like Uber and Lyft than it does to taxis, according to The Boston Globe. “Here’s an analogy: Most cities and towns require dogs but not cats to be licensed … there are differences between the animals,” the judge wrote in that decision. “Just as some people prefer cats to dogs, some people prefer Uber to Yellow Cab, Flash Cab, Checker Cab, et al. They prefer one business model to another.”
Charlestown house fire that displaced 20 A fire that displaced up to 20 people in a multi-family home in Charlestown was caused by an electric short-circuit in the building’s ground floor laundromat, according to investigators. Fire officials told local news media that Friday’s blaze began in the ceiling of Monument Laundromat, at 144 Bunker Hill St. The 6:45 a.m. fire on a particularly frigid morning in Boston sent fire trucks racing to the scene. Thick smoke billowed from the windows of the three-story home, and immediately formed on fire trucks and ladders. Temperatures were a bone-chilling 2 degrees that morning. The American Red Cross was on scene to assist displaced residents, at first believed to be six but later determined to be as many as 20. No one was injured.

Tips to prepare your pets for winter Outdoor exercise is good for pets no matter the season, but experts say snow and ice isn’t always a winter wonderland for man’s best friend. When the temperatures dip, pets — just like their human companions — need to bundle up. Pets can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite. Owners should also be on the lookout for common hazards, such as road salt and toxins from antifreeze that can pose a threat to the health and safety of your furry friends. “There are a lot of things specific to urban areas when you’re out walking your pets, said Michael San Filippo, senior media relations specialist with the American Veterinary Medical Association. In cities, dogs tend to run into a lot of de-icer and have more potential to come into contact with antifreeze, which can cause paw irritation or abrasions. These are some of the most common winter weather injuries critical

Russian ambassador to Turkey shot dead in Ankara art gallery The attacker was smartly dressed in black suit and tie and stood, alone, behind the ambassador as he made a speech at the art exhibition. The Russian ambassador to Turkey was shot in the back and killed as he gave a speech at an Ankara art gallery on Monday by an off-duty police officer who shouted “Don’t forget Aleppo” and “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire. The Russian foreign ministry confirmed the death of envoy Andrei Karlov, calling it a “terrorist act.” Relations between Moscow and Ankara have long been strained over the conflict in Syria, with the two support opposing sides in the war. Russia is an ally of
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and its airstrikes helped Syrian forces end rebel resistance last week in the northern city of Aleppo. Turkey, which seeks Assad’s ouster, has been repairing ties with Moscow after shooting down a Russian warplane over Syria last year. The Ankara mayor said on Twitter the gunman as a 22-year-old police officer. Two security sources told Reuters he was not on duty at the time. “He took out his gun and shot the ambassador from behind. We saw him lying on the floor and then we ran out,” said the witness, who asked not to be identified. People took refuge in adjoining rooms as the shooting continued. A video showed the attacker shouting: “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t for-

get Syria!” and “Allahu Akbar [God is Greatest]!” as screams rang out. He paced about and shouted as he held the gun in one hand and waved the other in the air.
A Reuters cameraman at the scene said gunfire rang out for some time after the attack. Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said the gunman had been “neutralized,” ap-
parently killed. Another photograph showed four people the ambassador lying on the floor. “We regard this as a terrorist act,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. “Terrorism will not win and we will fight against it decisively.” It was not clear whether the gunman was a lone operator, driven perhaps by popular discontent over Russian action in Syria or affiliated to a group like Islamic State, which has carried out a string of bomb attacks in Turkey in the last year. Since a failed coup in July, President Tayyip Erdogan has been purging the police of supporters of an exiled cleric and former ally, Fethullah Gulen, whom he characterizes as the chief terrorist threat to Turkey. BRIEF MBTA, Carmen’s Union agree to contract running through June 2021 The MBTA and its largest union have come to terms on a new contract, one that T officials say will save the system an annual average of $22 million over the next decade, and that the union chief said will protect his members’ jobs and will improve their quality of life. While the T and the Carmen’s Union Local 589 have clashed this year over privatization efforts, the revised and extended contract eliminates the possibility of the T outsourcing the work of driving buses or operating trains on the T’s current system, both sides said. Carmen’s Union members currently operate 2.4 million revenue hours of T service each year, and the new contract guarantees that union members will continue to operate 2.4 million revenue hours on the T. The union, though, will forgo a planned 2.5 percent pay raise next year and will instead see wages held flat in fiscal year 2018. The agreement, which revises the contract that had been in place and extends it through June 2021, was ratified Sunday by the union and T officials presented it to the T’s Fiscal and Management Control Board on Monday afternoon. Camila Cabello leaves Fifth Harmony You would think performing with a group of your peers might make the pressures of the fast-paced, competitive music industry easier to deal with. But apparently the opposite is true, given that so many pop bands have a hard time sticking together. Last year, Zayn Malik left the hugely popular One Direction. And now their female counterparts, Fifth Harmony, are facing a similar plight. On Monday, the group announced that after four-and-
a-half years together, Camila Cabello has left the group. According to their statement, Camila’s reps gave the notice. Does this mean there is some behind-the-scenes drama? Probably. At least Fourth Harmony has a similar ring to it.

Khloe Kardashian’s boyfriend had a baby last week
Khloe Kardashian has kept things pretty low-key with her new boyfriend, Tristan Thompson. And unlike other suitors who get caught up in the Kardashian web, there hasn’t been a ton of press coverage about Thompson, his career (he plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers) or their relationship. All we know is that a pregnant girlfriend, Jordan Craig, was left in the dust when Khloe and Tristan made it official.
Craig is the cousin of Kevin Hart’s wife, Eniko Parrish. Small world. Anyway, Us Weekly is now reporting that Craig quietly gave birth to a baby boy last week. While neither parent has shared pictures of their newborn son, Khloe posted a picture of her and bae. It’s safe to say that she’s unbothered by the new addition to Thompson’s family. But then again, what’s a little scandal to a Kardashian?

Paris Jackson gives Macaulay Culkin a pedicure We can imagine that being Michael Jackson’s daughter has supplied Paris Jackson with some strange stories. Not only was her late father the King of Pop, he had a private amusement park at his home and liked to climb trees even as an adult. If you have your pick of who to talk to
at a dinner party, Paris should have some really amazing material for a round of Two Truths and a Lie. For example, “I painted the toes of the kid from ‘Home Alone’” is a truth. In a photo posted on the 18-year-old’s Instagram account over the weekend, Paris is seen putting red polish
on now-36-year-old Macaulay Culkin’s toenails. He wasn’t just stopping by for a salon appointment — Culkin was close friends with Michael Jackson and is Paris’ godfather. In the picture’s caption, Paris calls her godfather a “hipster.” But he’s not too low-maintenance for a pedi.

As a kid, Emma Stone was a regular at her local youth theaters. But it wasn’t until Stone’s 2014-15 Broadway stint as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret that the actress really got to show the whole world her stuff. Now she’s in “La La Land, an old-fashioned musical movie that reunites her for the third time with Ryan Gosling. The two play struggling Angelenos who fall in love while hoofing and crooning up a storm. What was your favorite role you had as a musical theater kid? I was in a lot of stuff. A truly beloved musical for me that not a lot of people know is “Titanic, the musical. It was on Broadway for less than a year [in 1997]. The only person I know who is equally obsessed with it is Jesse Eisenberg. I was in that at my local youth theater. I was Stewardess Robinson, who survived at the end. But I’ve never gotten to play my dream role — well, that was Sally Bowles in “Cabaret. But I haven’t gotten to play my other, deep, deepdown dream role, which is Lucy in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. [Laughs] You did “La La Land shortly after your “Cabaret stint. Did that make it easier or harder? It was kind of both. When [director Damien Chazelle] was first talking to me about it, I was sick as a dog in “Cabaret. He had come to see me and I was on all this cold medicine. I was so hopped up I didn’t even know where I was, but I was on stage. I was like, “You realize I’m dying here, right? I’m so sick and I have no voice. How are we even

talking about a musical? Even though I was having the time of my life during “Cabaret. It was my favorite experience I’ve had as an actor, hands-down. But the idea of doing it again, for months and months, and on-screen and it will last forever — that was really overwhelming. I didn’t know you were sick on “Cabaret. Oh my God, I got sick so many times. Oh my Lord. How does one power through a Broadway run while on death’s door? Alan Cumming [her

And there’s not really much you can do when you are completely sick and the show must go on. Was there something on “La La Landâ€? that was particularly diďŹƒcult — a number, possibly? Rehearsing the duet [between her and Gosling, near Griffith Observatory] was fun and took a long time. It was one take, on the hill, dancing together. We would go to Griffith on the weekend to rehearse on that hill. It felt really good when we got it. Did you guys have a take that was perfect and then someone screwed one little thing up? There was one that was really good and then I fell off the bench. I was like, “F—! We have to do it again?â€? I hope you didn’t hurt yourself. No, I was fine, thank you for being so concerned. I guess you can survive anything after doing “Cabaret.â€? Yes, exactly. I was sick on stage, I can make it through anything.

Tony Williams with the three ballerinas who will play Clarice in this season’s “Urban Nutcracker.” DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
Heart, soul and healing The tragic events of Sept. 11 loomed over the first season of Tony Williams’ “The Urban Nutcracker,” and the artistic director debated if he should even move forward with his holiday production at all. “Opening night was two months after 9/11, and a friend said to me, ‘Is this really a good time for you to be debuting this show?’” remembers the former Boston Ballet dancer and founder of the Tony Williams Dance Center in Jamaica Plain. “I really thought about it, but somehow it felt like the right thing to do. We did three soldout shows, and people had electric responses. I think maybe it had to do with the experiences we had gone through, the aftermath.” Williams — like many of the artists and creators we’ve spoken to in the months following the election — hope their art provides healing qualities, even for him. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to say, ‘Let’s go rehearse, and forget about the election for a little while,’” he says. “Time does heal, but for me, I’m lucky to have young people in my cast and classes who aren’t thinking about the aftermath, and the blueness of the world. They’re thinking about
having a good time. Being around this youthfulness has helped me heal anything I’ve been feeling about this election.” With the “Urban Nutcracker” now in its 16th season, Williams’ production has grown and evolved, while keeping stylistic ethos from that first 2001 season: a city backdrop inspired by Boston with Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite” driving the beat for a diverse range of dancers. In addition to a new prologue scene featuring Georgian folk dancers, this season’s “Urban Nutcracker” will include new cityscape drops by set designer Janie Howland and a swanky new throne for Clarice that will make its audience-side debut in act two. Each year, planning for tweaks and additions begins just as the season prior ends. “It’s a 12-month cycle,” Williams explains. “There’s loose planning and a postmortem in January, then in spring things start to ramp up.” Auditions begin in September, and while the “Urban Nutcracker” boasts a more diverse cast than many other dance productions in town, Williams is quick to call it a happy coincidence.

“We don’t have a quota system—it’s an organic decision. It’s not like, ‘Let’s pick a black kid here and an AsianAmerican here. It’s not like that all,” he says. “It’s very fluid, but we’re also receptive to folks coming to [our] school because they feel comfortable in a racially diverse school. You see kids in our classroom, and it’s like the U.N.” On the other hand, Williams, who was the first African-American principal dancer at the Boston Ballet, is also focused on providing opportunities for minority dancers and plans to establish an apprentice program for female students of color. “You don’t tend to see many women of color in Boston shows, on point, in tutus,” he says. “You see men, but I think Boston is behind in representation of people in color in dance in particular.” RACHEL RACZKA

Disney’s new bag is remaking its animated classics as live-action romps. So far, so good, even if they’ve been a bit pointless; last year’s “Cinderellaâ€? was perfectly ďŹ ne if a little too close to the original, coming far short of a bold new vision. Jon Favreau’s lavish redo of “The Jungle Book,â€? meanwhile, has the perk of tackling a title that’s not one of its best (even if it was the last feature Walt Disney oversaw
before his death). Part of Favreau’s job involves ďŹ xing some bugs in the original, smoothing out a source that’s a bit too episodic. He’s still perhaps not quite the visionary a movie of this scale requires, but maybe that’s a good thing: His talents aren’t in spectacle but in people, and even a movie with 95 percent critters has a lived-in, character-driven feel. What he’s made isn’t exactly essential, but it is charming.

Morgan Saylor (with Brian “Sene Marc) in “White Girl FILMRISE
Her name is Leah (played by Morgan Saylor), and she is indeed white (and privileged). She drops into slowly gentrifying Ridgewood, Queens, with a week before school starts, and doesn’t waste time hoovering up drinks and drugs, letting her boss (Justin Bartha) do her on his desk and getting involved in local low-rent
crime. Sounds like the sequel to “Kids, no? But Elizabeth Wood’s semi-autobiographical drama is more observational than alarmist. Leah can always be counted on to make bad decisions, but you won’t walk away simply worrying about the kids these days. It’s more complex and more empathetic than the title lets on.
Gena Rowlands in 1988’s “Another Woman MGM
In 1978, Woody Allen shocked the world: He made his ďŹ rst serious movie. “Annie Hallâ€? was partly serious, at least compared to the silly comedies he’d made before. But “Interiorsâ€? was heavy. There were no jokes — just nods to Ingmar Bergman that weren’t funny, as they were just three years earlier in “Love and Death.â€? It’s been fashionable to poo-poo Woody’s occasional straightfaced dramas as rip-os of more masterful ďŹ lmmakers, which they partly were. But the four that just popped up on FilmStruck — under the banner “Serious Woody Allenâ€? — are worthy of reconsideration. Of these (which also includes “Stardust Memoriesâ€? and “Septemberâ€?), we’re the most into “Another Woman,â€? his 1988 drama about a professor (Gena Rowlands) whose stuy NYC existence is shaken to the core. It contains some of his most lyrical and heartbreaking passages — and, thanks to Gene Hackman, even a joke or two.

Wow them with a smoky eye The key to a flawless smoky eye is to “blend, blend, blend,” stresses Lopez. “I notice when people do a smoky eye it looks blunt on the arch of the eye around the crease.” The expert shows us how to avoid this by taking us through his process.
1
Create a blank canvas. “Clear up uneven skintone on the eyelid by applying a little bit of a concealer with a creamy base to it, and set it with powder,” says Lopez. But if you have oily lids, he says ditch the concealer for a primer like Nars Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base. “That’s going to keep your eyeshadow on all day and ensure that it’s not going to crease throughout the night.”

Everyone expects a bold red lip for holiday festivities. But this year, let’s make eyes the focus. “The holidays are a good excuse for people to wear shimmery eyeshadow and be a little more blinging,” says Nars makeup stylist Niko Lopez, part of the backstage team that’s created Fashion Week
looks for designers Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Rodarte and others. He tells us how to pull off the perfect party-ready sultry eye, and then to soften it for a casual soiree at home.
Tone things down for a party at home If you’re hosting a holiday party at your house and you don’t want a full-on glam look, Lopez says to tweak the smoky-eye look to the right. Start by prepping the eyes with a little bit of primer or concealer. Line the top of the lash line with
a lighter liner, like Nars Witching Hour. “It’s not a full-on black; it’s an iridescent charcoal, so it’s not intimidating for someone who doesn’t wear a lot of makeup,” he says. Next, smudge it and add a tiny bit to the lower lash line. Then curl the lashes and add mascara. “Keep it just at that, he says. “You have a little bit of that smoldered effect and focus on the eyes without having all the shadows and textures that look too done up.” With this look he
says you can wear a red, berry or neutral lip.
Expert tips “A lot of women get ready for a party in a bathroom, which has bright lighting,” explains Lopez. “And then they get scared because they see a lot of makeup so they tone it down, only to get to the event and look completely natural.” He says to keep in mind that parties are dimly lit — don’t shy away from applying enough makeup to make a statement. Meanwhile, the stylist’s pet peeve is going overboard with highlighting or contouring. “You can use the same tech-
Next, apply a soft neutral shade on the eyelids. Lopez recommends an ash brown with a little gold in it for a slight pop. “Sweep the shadow across the crease of the eye, blending with a fluffy brush,” he says.
3
Now for the fun. Add a shimmery shadow across the lid from inner corner to outer corner, blending up to the crease, says Lopez. This season, the makeup artist is loving the charcoal shimmery gray shadow in the new Nars Sarah Moon Eyeshadow palette, Indes Galantes.
4
For a fierce look, Lopez applies a kohl liner (Nars Witching Hour) on the waterline (the inner rim of the eye), as well as on the top and bottom lash line. “Doing the waterline is what’s really going to give you that smoldered look,” he says, adding, “If someone wants a smoky eye, but not too intense, then I would leave the waterline out.”

Finish up by curling the lashes and adding two or three coats of mascara. To complete the look, says Lopez, apply a nude blush on the apples of the cheeks and pair with a nude lip.
nique as, say, your favorite beauty bloggers, but with a way lighter hand,” says Lopez. To add dimension in a more wearable way he uses Nars Multiple sticks on the cheekbones and blends out to the temples. Your holiday hangover helper wellbeing MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY Water, water, everywhere. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
It’s that time of year — holiday parties with open bars, long, wineheavy dinners with fami-
ly, raucous nights out on the town with friends. The common denominator? Booze; lots of it. It’s a time to let loose, but you don’t want to waste your hard-earned vacation days worshipping the porcelain goddess (and that will be the first and last hangover-relat-
ed euphemism in this article, we promise). We all wish we could drink to our heart’s content without any consequences, but that’s just not the way it works. Dr. George F. Koob, the director of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alco-
holism breaks it down: “‘There’s no free ride in the brain; if something makes you feel good, it’s going to make you feel lousy later when it wears off.” And while we’d love a magic bullet, “there’s no one particular [hangover] cure, per se,” according to Dr. Stephanie Zeszutek, an ob-gyn and professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. “I like to say ‘management’ instead of cure; [treating a hangover] is really managing your dehydration, managing your electrolyte imbalance,” she explains. Koob’s general advice: moderation, pacing yourself and knowing your limits. While that all sounds like common sense — easier said than done. Here are some practical tips to help prevent those difficult mornings after; and if you do slip up, to help you recover.
The night of Hydration, hydration, hydration. Koob recommends drinking plenty of water alongside your alcoholic beverages, or as “drink spacers” in between cocktails — which will also help you with pacing. “By and large, the most overwhelming factor is how much alcohol you take over a short period of time,” he says. Be sure not to drink on an empty stomach, which can increase the rate of intoxication. Nutritionist Keri Gans, author of “The
Small Change Diet,” recommends starting off the night with a well-balanced meal of protein, healthy fat and fiber, which will help slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol.
The morning after Sorry, but “the hair of the dog” will not help you. “A hangover is basically a mini withdrawal syndrome,” Koob explains. In the short term, that bloody mary at brunch might give you the illusion of feeling better — by getting you temporarily drunk again — but it will only make your hangover worse later in the day.
For a headache Coffee can help relieve a headache; but know that caffeine, like alcohol, is also a diuretic. Make sure to match your cup of joe with ample water to prevent further dehydration, Gans advises. To help replenish lost electrolytes while you hydrate, Gans names coconut water, Pedialyte and sports drinks, such as Gatorade. To reduce the headache, Dr. Shanna Levine, a primary care physician at Mount Sinai Health Systems, suggests taking 400-600 milligrams of Ibuprofen or another nonsteroid antiinflammatory medicine.
For nausea Zeszutek recommends freezing ice pops with low-acidic fruit juice
(think, apple, carrot, or aloe vera, as opposed to high-citrus orange or grapefruit, which could trigger nausea) as a gentle way to take in fluids and electrolytes. Similarly, sipping on a cool, refreshing smoothie made with banana (high in potassium), apple and yogurt won’t shock your system. On the savory side, Gans recommends chicken soup, which goes down easy while replenishing sodium levels. If you’re feeling OK enough to venture into the terrain of solid foods, keep it bland and simple. Gans recommends eggs (gentle on the stomach) with whole-grain toast (providing an energizing carb boost). When it comes to mobile intravenous fluid replacement treatments, offered via companies like the Hangover Club, which sends a nurse to hook you up to an electrolyte-rich drip at your home, Levine says they may work as a fast track to hydrating you — if you can afford them (the Hangover Club’s in-house treatments start at $199). “Adequate oral intake of calories or fluids is sufficient to treat most hangovers,” she says. That being said, if your hangover lasts longer than 12 to 24 hours — if you find yourself on day two of discomfort and vomiting — then you might need to seek medical attention, says Zeszutek.

ARE PATRIOTS DESTINED FOR STORYBOOK ENDING? OPINION
DANNY PICARD @dannypicard
It’s been a crazy year. And the New England Patriots, so far, have survived it all. First, Tom Brady was suspended the first four games of the regular season. Then, Rob Gronkowski had back surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve after a Week 12 win over the New York Jets. Throughout it all, the Patriots’ defense was trying to capture an identity. Tough to do when the heart and soul of that defense — Rob Ninkovich — was suspended the first four games of the year after testing positive for a banned substance. Even tougher to do when you trade your most athletic defensive player — Jamie Collins — after a Week 8 win over the Bills in Buffalo. And from Jabaal Sheard’s healthy scratch to Stephen Gostkowski’s sporadic case of the yips to Danny Amendola’s ankle injury, New England’s season has been the
complete opposite of how you’d “draw it up.” Yet, here are the Patriots, setting themselves up for a storybook ending. At 12-2 through Week 15, the Pats are the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They clinched the division and a firstround bye with Sunday’s 16-3 win over the Broncos in Denver. The only teams challenging them for that No. 1 seed in the AFC are the 11-3 Oakland Raiders and the 10-4 Kansas City Chiefs. First things first, let’s take a look at what the Patriots have left. They’ll host the 4-10 New York Jets on Christmas Eve. It’s a game in which New England opened as a 16-point favorite, and rightfully so. Then, the Patriots finish the regular season on New Year’s Day in Miami, against a 9-5 Dolphins team that will most likely be fighting for a playoff spot. But if the Patriots defeat the Jets in Week 16, then that will be their 10th win in the conference. The Chiefs currently have seven conference wins, which would give New England the tiebreaker over Kansas City, even if Kansas City won

their final two games, against Denver and San Diego. So realistically, the only team challenging the Pats for the top seed is Oakland. But a Patriots win over the Jets and a Raiders loss in either of their final two games — against Indianapolis and Denver — would clinch that No. 1 seed for New England. Basically, the Patriots control their own destiny. It’s looking like the road to the Super Bowl, in the AFC, will go through Gillette Stadium. And that must be driving the rest of the NFL crazy. How many teams would be able to function like the Patriots did, given the circumstances they faced all season long? This can be an ugly league, which has never seemed more unpredictable than in 2016. Then, you have the Patriots. Set up for a possible 14-2 season while spending a good amount of time trying to perform under not-so-ideal situations. Those situations being, a suspended quarterback to begin the season, and the loss of one of the most dangerous receivers in football. Are your joints swollen and tender? Are you suffering from skin lesions? Psoriatic arthritis affects almost 1 million people in the United States.
The Patriots have the inside track at clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Still, Bill Belichick found a way. Tom Brady then found a way. The Patriots, like they usually do, found a way. Now, someone else in the AFC will have to find a way to go into Foxboro and beat Belichick, Brady and an
all-of-a-sudden championship-caliber defense in January. Crazy to think that somebody will be able to do that. Even crazier to think that, after everything that’s gone wrong so far for the Patriots in 2016, this
GETTY IMAGES
script could end with Roger Goodell handing the Lombardi Trophy to Brady in Houston on Feb. 5. It’s been a crazy year. Now, the only thing crazy would be the Patriots not going to the Super Bowl.

Aries You will come up against a roadblock if you try to take on too much or protest against someone who is in control. Focus on making positive personal changes.
Libra Consider positive personal changes you can make. Knowing what you want to achieve next year will help you enjoy the festive season. A trip looks promising.
Taurus Plan to do something nice for your peers. Your generosity and thoughtfulness will be appreciated. A unique gesture to help someone will bring you satisfaction.
Scorpio Don’t let your emotions take charge when dealing with older relatives. Do what you have to do and don’t look back. Your intuition will help you make the right choice.
Gemini Stick to what you know, and don’t budge even if someone tries to talk you into taking part in something that isn’t in your best interest. Avoid joint ventures.
Sagittarius Find out what everyone else is up to before making a change that could affect others. Once you get the go-ahead, it will make your job and life easier.
Cancer Spending time at home with your family while getting things ready for end-ofyear festivities will put you in a good mood. Share your thoughts and feelings.
Capricorn You’ll intuitively know what’s best for you and how to go about getting what you want. Don’t hesitate when the going is good. Make your move and don’t look back.
Leo A change at home or in your workplace will turn out better than anticipated. Something you want to do for a loved one will result in an emotional reaction.
Aquarius You need to take care of incomplete financial matters. Making a donation to a charity or cause is fine, as long as you don’t go into debt to help others.
Virgo Stick to the facts when dealing with controversial matters. Your future may be at stake if you don’t adhere to the rules. Industry parties are best handled diplomatically.
Pisces Don’t get too serious. Get into the spirit of the season and be grateful for what you have. Take a moment to reflect on what transpired this year. EUGENIA LAST
