Donald Trump accepts the intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia engaged in cyberattacks affecting the presidential election and may take actions in response, his incoming chief of staff said on Sunday. Reince Priebus said Trump believes Russia was behind the intrusions into the Democratic Party organizations, though he did not clarify whether the president-elect agreed that the hacks
were directed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He accepts the fact that this particular case was entities in Russia so that’s not the issue,” Priebus said on “Fox News Sunday.” Priebus’ comments marked a significant shift away from the repeated dismissals by Trump of Russian interference in the presidential election. Former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died on Sunday at the age of 82, state media reported, a big blow to moderates and reformists deprived now of their most influential supporter in the Islamic establishment. “Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was taken to hospital after heart attack and more than an hourlong efforts by doctors to revive him were not successful,” the deputy minister

of health was quoted by Fars news agency as saying. Residents said a crowd gathered outside the hospital in northern Tehran where Rafsanjani was taken. Mehdi, the imprisoned son of Hashemi who is in jail on corruption charges, attended the hospital to say goodbye to the body of his father. REUTERS

“Photography, for me, is most importantly just conveying honesty.” KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui
kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
Khabeer Sultan is a man of color who says he just wants to be honest, and he uses photography to convey his truth. “An American Experience” is collection of photographs designed “to bring positivity to black men and all men of color … to combat the historical view of men of color in the media throughout the history of America,” Sultan told Metro. “I titled it that way instead of ‘The American Experience’ to convey the importance of each person’s story,” he said. The son of Southerners who migrated to Massachusetts when he was in his teens, Sultan grew up in Dorchester. He said he picked up a camera one day about four years ago and began his “long journey.” What drew you to photography? Photography, for me, is most importantly just conveying honesty. The
project that I’m working on today, that’s a large part of it. If someone is looking at the photo, I want them to see that person in the photograph. I watched Ava DuVernay’s “13th.” The film spoke to me of the misrepresentation of black men in America throughout the history of the country. In that instant, I wanted to combat that image and that misrepresentation. You’ve included in your project an accountant in a suit, a man with dreadlocks and a more ambiguously ethnic yogi. How did you decide whom to portray? I see — just like in movies — you see black men portrayed as criminals. There’s a movie I watched, “The Birth of a Nation,” from 1915, but that kind of set the tone. That film portrayed black men as rapists and criminals and throughout history you see that trend. We’re criminals or we live in poverty. That could be true, but I don’t think that speaks to everyone. I mention that film to say the ramifications of it are still felt today. In the media, we’ve seen young black men
shot by police officers, a rash of hate crimes against people of color since Election Day and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Have these events influenced your work? In terms of the shootings — and I can talk specifically to the Michael Brown shooting — he laid in the street for hours. That’s an impactful image. Kids watching TV are seeing a black man lying in the street for hours. That’s going to affect you. This project combats that. That’s not OK. What I’d like folks to know about men of color is we’re like everyone else. We have to work harder to get that message across and that’s unfair, but we hold our heads up high … we love one another, we support each other and want our community to succeed. The photos in “An American Experience” are black and white. Was that a mindful decision? I chose black and white photos specifically to isolate the men and so the viewer won’t get distracted. I hope when you look at the photos and read their quotes you feel something.

Taraji P. Henson wants girls to be inspired The “Empire” star talks about playing an under-known pioneer in “Hidden Figures.”

When Taraji P. Henson went to meet Katherine Johnson — the woman she plays in “Hidden Figures” — she was greeted at Johnson’s home by her two daughters. They hugged her and told the “Empire” actress, 46, how happy they were she was going to play their mother. “I was like, ‘No press u r e ,’ ” Hens o n jokes. Set in the 1960s,

“Hidden Figures” tells the story of three women — Johnson, Dorothy Va u g h a n (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) — who were integral in the early days of the space race. John-
son was a mathematician whose brilliance helped John Glenn become the first American to orbit the Earth. In fact, right before his launch, he specifically requested she make sure the numbers for his mission were correct. All three women were pioneers — not just women who rose in a STEM field, but black women living in Virginia in the early 1960s. Even while employees, all three faced discrimination, had to work harder to impress their
white, male superiors. But when Henson talked to Johnson, now 98, she was surprised she didn’t stew in her long-ago pain. “I tried to make it weighty. I said, ‘How does a black woman do it? They were misogynistic. I’m sure you got called the nword.’ And she was like, ‘Well, you know, it just was the way it was. I just did my job,’” Henson recalls. “She was so humble. She would always say ‘we.’ In my mind, I’m like, ‘No, Katherine, it was you. It
One of the first scenes in “Hidden Figures” finds Johnson, Vaughan and Jackson on the side of the road on the way to work, fixing their broken car. Then a police car pulls up. A white cop comes out, looking suspicious. It’s a scary scene to see right now — and all the more surprising when, upon finding they work at NASA, he changes his tune, even gives them an escort to work. “You can feel the audience brace themselves when
was you and your mind alone that got Glenn to orbit the Earth. He didn’t say, ‘Go get so-and-so, soand-so and so-and-so.’ He said, ‘Get the smart girl.’ But the fact that she sees the ‘we’ in ‘I’ blew me away.” Henson was also blown away by Johnson’s passion for math. She describes her eyes lighting up as she discussed her craft. “If I had a teacher like her, I could have been a
the cop arrives,” Henson explains. “What’s beautiful about that scene is you can see this man unlearn racism right before your eyes. It proves that your perception can change in a matter of minutes. That’s when you know racism is learned. When he saw that these women’s lives mattered to the great space race, that negativity he was about to spew on them shifted in the blink of an eye. If we can all get the human race back to some goal we can all focus on, I think the world will be more balanced. It’s unbalanced right now.”
rocket scientist,” Henson says. “When I was growing up, no one ever said to me, ‘You can’t do math because you’re a girl.’ But there was an understanding. You just grew up thinking math and science were for boys. Somebody lied to me, because this woman exists. All these women existed. I made it my mission to do this film, because I didn’t want another girl to grow up believing that lie.”

blood. It’s Beckinsale’s fifth go as Selene, having merely filed a cameo in the third installment, “Rise of the Lycans,” in 2009. Beckinsale, 43, talks to us about not bearing tired of her most famous character, getting in shape and welcoming a female director to the franchise. This is the franchise’s fifth installment. What was it like to still be playing Selene? It’s been quite a few years, so it is not like I get tired of it. We have done a few movies but over quite a long period of time. It’s particularly nice that we have people from the beginning; it’s a little bit like a little family getting back together. Do you have to prepare physically for this role? There is a lot of physical activity going on. You want to step up your workout so you have stamina and flexibility. I did a lot of yoga to make sure I didn’t get injured during it. And then of course learning all the fight choreography takes a long time, so there is a lot of training. How was it filming that epic ice battle? It wasn’t really ice, but it was still very
A woman behind the camera What was it like working with Anna Foerster, the series’ new director? We always have a new director, so I’m quite used to it. The difference this time was that it was a female director, which felt very appropriate for the series. It felt like it was time to have that. And I feel very passionate about that. Was her approach to your character different to that of a male director? We had never had female werewolves. Maybe the male directors didn’t think they were cute enough. [Laughs] She really wanted to do little things like that. But to be honest, having not met her as a man, I don’t know what qualities are hers and what qualities are hers as a female. She came with a lot of visual ideas.
cold because it was December in Prague. So it felt very much like it could have been ice, to be honest. But it was interesting because you had to do things in slightly smaller segments because it was a massive long epic fight. So with those ones it is really interesting to get to see the movie at the end and see how it all fits together. What has Selene taught you over the years? She taught me not to run like a girl, and how to throw punches. [Laughs] That’s it, really.

Gronk’s new workout plan It’s a new year. Do you have the resolve to work out like a Gronk? BRENDAN MCGUIRK @ BrendanMcGuirk letters@metro.us
Rob Gronkowski is one of the most elite athletes on the planet. You and I are maybe not. But now, at the Boston Sports Club in Medford’s Wellington Circle, we can all work out like Gronk — through an exercise regimen designed by the star New England Patriots tight end and his no-less-physicallyimposing family. Before the program opened to the public, I visited the “Gronk Zone” to try my hand at its eponymous workout. The Gronk Fitness Program is meant to help everyone from dedicated gym rat to couchridden schlub achieve and maintain his or her health goals, using the motivational techniques that helped Rob and his brothers to realize their
pro ball dreams. To a layman who hasn’t set foot in a gym since his days riding the pine as a high school football “player,” the classes are reminiscent of the hugely popular CrossFit — combining explosive station exercises with an aerobic pace in a team-focused environment, led by high-energy team leaders barking out encouraging praise. Camaraderie is key at Gronk Fitness, and the brothers attribute much of their own athletic success to a youth spent playing games with each other, which inspired them to continue challenging themselves. “You build that mentality at a kid,” Rob said. “As we progressed through high school and college to the pros, we always wanted to keep notching up another level, and push each other.” The Patriots standout, who will miss the playoffs after a back injury, conceded that while some people are
But what if you party a little too hearty? Gronk Fitness claims it will help anyone get into the best shape of his or her life, but part of adopting new challenges is confronting potential obstacles. To this point, when asked how seasonal partying and correlating hangovers could affect one’s performance, Rob preached the virtue of equilibrium. “[It’s] sometimes difficult. If you went too hard, you’re not going to be able to wake up and go. But you’ve got to be able to balance yourself,” the one-time Mr. “Yo Soy Fiesta” sagely warned. “You’ve got to be able to work hard, get all that out of the way first and make sure you accomplish your goal before having that fun.”

genetically advantaged, the real key to #gains is commitment. “Dedicate yourself to the max to be the athlete you want to be or get to the fitness level you want to get to,” he instructed. “Anyone can be fit, it’s just all about the hard work you want to put in.” A visit to a Gronkified class can push you out of your comfort one and serve as a reminder that sometimes the most exhausting part of the gym is walking in. Break that sweat, and you’ll be living the Gronk Zone motto: “Get your mind right.”

Student loan resolutions for 2017
Make getting out of debt a priority.
NerdWallet is a personal ďŹ nance website.
People make New Year’s resolutions with the best of intentions, but odds are slim that they’ll pan out. You can buck that trend by creating resolutions that are specific and attainable. If you’re trying to accomplish something big, like getting out of student loan debt, these factors are even more important. “The clients that have the most success are the ones who don’t ignore the problem. They come up with an aggressive but doable plan, says Mark Struthers, a Minnesotabased certified financial planner. Here are three attainable student loan resolutions for 2017.
1Â
Calculate your payoff date
Figuring out the exact month and year when you’ll be free of your student-loan debt is a strong motivator to keep paying it off. The typical 10-year loan term can feel pretty abstract, but knowing you’ll be debt-free in,
say, March 2027, might inspire you to reach that goal even more quickly. To find your payoff date, log into your loan accounts with your student loan servicer. Note the amount you owe, as well as your interest rates and monthly payments. Then plug those numbers into a payoff calculator to find out how many years of payments you have left and how much interest you’ll owe. Once you know the exact month and year you’ll finish paying off your loans, create a loan-paydown plan. You might choose to pay more than the minimum each month to get out of debt faster; if so, specify how the extra funds should be added to your account by sending your servicer a letter or email. You can make those extra dollars work even harder by targeting your highest-interest loans first — that will cut down on the interest you’ll pay overall.
2
Switch up your debt management strategy
Make 2017 the year you stop staring down your student-loan balance at the exclusion of other financial goals. To save the most money, prioritize your debts by interest rate. Credit cards and personal loans, for example, usually carry higher rates than student loans,
&
jobs education
HOW TO GET AHEAD so they cost more, longterm. It might be tempting to throw any extra cash at your student loans, but it might not make the most financial sense. And your financial plan needs to look beyond debt if you want to successfully manage your money. “None of your finances should be looked at in a vacuum, says Scott Hanson, a Sacramento, California, certified financial planner. Carve out room for emergency-fund savings and retirement contributions when creating your budget. Thanks to
the power of compound interest, you don’t have to build any of these savings overnight. But that’s also why it’s important to start saving for retirement as soon as you can and why you should max out a 401(k) match if one is available to you. You’ll be thankful for the free money later on.
3Â
Make your loans fit your budget
Having trouble affording your loans? Want to free up money for long-term
savings? Lowering your payments can help keep your student debt from overwhelming all else. If you can’t afford payments on your federal loans, look into income-driven repayment plans. If you qualify, your payments will be capped at a percentage of your income and your loan term will be extended to 20 to 25 years; you’ll be forgiven any leftover balance after that time and it will be taxed as income. Deferment and forbearance can both provide a temporary reprieve from private loan payments.
Explain your situation to your lender to find the best option. If you can afford your payments but want to save money on your loans, look into studentloan refinancing. If you qualify, you’ll trade your existing loan for a new one with different terms, such as a lower interest rate and payment amount. You’ll need a steady income, a low debt-to-income ratio and a credit score at or above 690. If you don’t know your score, use NerdWallet’s credit-score tool. DEVON DELFINO

as it did last Saturday against the Raiders, they’ll be hard-pressed to score enough points on offense to keep up with Tom Brady — fresh off a regular season with the best touchdown-tointerception ratio of all time (28-2). AFC No. 3 Pittsburgh at No. 2 Kansas City, Sunday at 1:05 p.m. NBC The Steelers looked simply dominant in their 30-12 all-around win against the over-matched Dolphins Sunday afternoon, but without home field advantage and up against the well-rested Chiefs in Kansas City, it could be quite the test. Ben Roethlisberger was able to get the ball to LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown in space
(whether via handoff or short pass) to allow them to score two touchdowns apiece. The Chiefs will spend most of their effort on defense controlling the ball on offense, and keeping the ball out of the hands of Pittsburgh’s elite skill players. He did, however, leave the game with an injury late. It’s severity is yet unknown. The Chiefs have been tested often in the best conference in football, the AFC West and entered the postseason fresh off dominating wins against the Broncos and Chargers. NFC No. 4 Green Bay at No. 1 Dallas, at 4:40 p.m. Fox The last of the favorites won Sunday night, as the Packers came alive in the second half to thoroughly
dominate New York, 3813, and advance to face the Cowboys in what is a dream matchup for the NFL. It would be hard to argue that any quarterback not named Aaron Rodgers is playing the best in the world right now, and Rodgers and the red hot Packers — winners of seven straight now — could be just the team to upset the NFC’s No. 1 overall seeded Cowboys. Dallas is of course led by rookie sensations Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott, and their high powered offense (thanks to the best offensive line in football) helped them dominate the NFC all year. But if any unit can take advantage of the Cowboys’ weaknesses it’s the Green Bay offense.

Aries Don’t just think about change, make it happen. Gather information and prepare well in order to get the best results. A window of opportunity must not be ignored.
Libra Look at all the angles before you make a choice. A short trip or meeting will give you something to think about. Change begins within. Learn from experience.
Taurus Learn as you go. Ask questions and be hesitant to make an important decision or move without following through with a thorough investigation.
Scorpio Concentrate on personal plans and engage in projects that you can do alone. Walk away if someone tries to use guilt to part you from your hard-earned cash.
Gemini Remain levelheaded. Refuse to let your emotions take control. Make honesty and integrity priorities, regardless of what others do. Protect your position and future.
Sagittarius Taking precautions will be in your best interest when dealing with partnerships. Avoid making unrealistic promises. Stick close to home.
Cancer You must set things up the way you want them without drawing attention. Avoiding interference will allow you to accomplish much. Be creative.
Capricorn Look for alternative ways to bring in cash, or call upon old friends to help you come up with a workable solution to any problem you face.
Leo Playful interactions with family and co-workers will result in popularity. Don’t let your health suffer due to excess stress or high-strung emotions.
Aquarius Do what you can to help someone, but don’t lose sight of your personal goals. A methodical pace and a practical outlook will help you avoid an emotional mishap.
Virgo Activities that will keep you motivated and busy are favored. Family events or romantic plans will help distract you from life’s little setbacks.
Pisces Refrain from acting on assumptions. Your emotions will be difficult to control when dealing with both personal and professional situations. EUGENIA LAST
