TRUMP TO MAKE SON-IN- US NAVY FIRED WARNING LAW A SENIOR ADVISER SHOTS AT IRANIAN VESSEL

Donald Trump will name his 35-year-old son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as a senior adviser in his White House, a transition official said Monday, a potentially thorny choice in the face of anti-nepotism law. The new position for Kushner had been anticipated, but it was unclear what his role would be. Unlike Cabinet positions, the post would not require Senate confirmation.
Like Trump, Kushner is a New York-based real estate developer with a wide net of business dealings that could raise potential conflicts of interest. Kushner, who married Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka, in 2009, helped guide Republican Trump to victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. REUTERS

White supremacist Dylann Roof on Monday stood by his pledge not to testify or call any witnesses who might persuade jurors not to sentence him to death for killing nine black parishioners at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, in June 2015. That leaves jurors deciding his fate to consider only the evidence offered by U.S. prosecutors, including four days of poignant testimony
from more than 20 family and friends of the victims, who recounted the lives of their loved ones, ages 26 to 87, and the impact of their deaths. Roof is representing himself. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel denied Roof’s request that the judge decide his sentence rather than the jury. REUTERS
CUBA AND UNITED STATES SIGN OIL-SPILL DEAL

Cuba and the United States agreed to prevent, contain and clean up oil and other toxic spills in the Gulf of Mexico, as they rush to conclude deals before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. U.S. Charge d’Affaires Jeffrey DeLaurentis, upon signing the agreement, said it was one of a series of deals to protect the shared marine environment of the neighboring countries separated by just 90 miles of water.
Trump has threatened to scrap a still-fragile detente between the two countries unless Cuba makes further political and economic concessions. U.S. companies and the outgoing administration of President Barack Obama have announced a flurry of small deals in recent weeks aimed at making it harder for Trump to ditch the detente established by Obama and the Cuban President Raul Castro in 2014. Space-saver rules broken across Boston Residents can’t seem to comply with city regulations about space savers — with the exception of those in the South End. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
Space-saver season apparently has begun, although the chairs and cones placed in the streets after Saturday’s snowfall violated city rules. The storm dropped about 7 inches of snow in Boston and consequently sparked a wave of space saving, a practice almost everyone in Boston has lamented. But the city never declared a snow emergency or a parking ban — necessary to justify a space saver, the city said. And yet, Boston 311, the city’s non-emergency system, received at least 127 reports of space savers on the streets between
the time the first flurries fell Friday and Monday afternoon (though one report was a prank, citing the stolen Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum paintings as space savers). The city says it responds to every complaint about premature space-saving. “When a space saver is used when no snow emergency is called, the Department of Public Works can and will remove it,” said Nicole Caravella, a City Hall spokesperson. One 311 caller reported the stereotypical spacesaver attitude: threatening. “I took down your license plate number… take my spot again and I will key the s— out of your car and slash all your tires,” a note reported to 311 read. “This is your first warning. DO NOT F— WITH ME.” The note appeared on a car in South Boston, the neighborhood that apparently birthed the spacesaver tradition.

“There’s this sense of entitlement, ‘If I shovel out a space, I own the space,’” Stephen Fox
And yet, just streets away, a Boston neighborhood was free of space savers — and threats. The South End decided to ban
the use of space savers altogether in 2014, right before the terrible 2014/15 winter that dumped 9 feet of snow on the city.
provides a permanent, clog-free solution!
That winter, there were seven documented cases of space-saver vandalism in the South End, according to Stephen Fox, chair of South End Forum — exactly the kind of behavior the neighborhood was hoping to avoid with the ban. South End Forum, a group which represents all 17 of the South End’s independent neighborhood associations, launched a GoFundMe campaign to reimburse every South End resident who filed a police report and documented their vehicle’s damage. “Everybody who got hit by this was made whole. We thought it was the responsible thing to do, and it also helped take away the threat,” Fox said. “[Last year], we had very little snow and absolutely no space savers, no incidents. This year, we’re looking forward to a repeat of last year.” Though space savers popped up in Dorchester, Mission Hill, Ja-
maica Plain and other neighborhoods after last weekend’s storm, none appeared on South End streets, Fox said. “There’s this sense of entitlement, ‘If I shovel out a space, I own the space,’” Fox said. “We in the South End reject that.” Many dislike the practice. “Space savers are such an embarrassment to this city,” a Jamaica Plain resident commented on Reddit about the aggressive Southie note. Only the South End has successfully freed itself from the pattern. The neighborhood partnered with the city to ensure that trash collectors pick up space savers as they come down the street and that 311 will respond to reports. “The North End, Chinatown, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Bay Village and Fenway have all petitioned the mayor to join the South End ban,” Fox said.

Triple murderer sentenced to death for 2001 rampage Gary Lee Sampson’s sentence by federal jury marks the second in Massachusetts, a state that banned the practice. A Massachusetts man who admitted to killing three people in a 2001 rampage in two states was sentenced to death by a federal jury Monday after a two-month trial. It was the second time that former drifter Gary Lee Sampson, 57, has faced the possibility of execution for the stabbing and strangling murders. A 2004 death sentence was overturned by a judge in 2011 after it emerged that one of the jurors had lied about being a victim of domestic abuse. “This was all about never giving up. Fifteen years was a long time, but we somehow don’t know how to quit,” Mike Rizzo, father of one of Sampson’s victims Jonathan Rizzo, told reporters. “This is what we wanted, what we fought for,” he said. “Let’s be thankful for that and then move on to the next fight.” Sampson is the second person to be sentenced to death by a federal jury in Massachusetts in two years, a rarity in the liberal-leaning state. Convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was sentenced to death in May

2015. Jurors saw the pocketknife that Sampson used to kill his first two victims, listened to his confessions in which he described the slayings in gory detail and heard from more than 100 witnesses. Prosecutors focused on the premeditated nature of the crimes. After a series of bank robberies in North Carolina, Sampson returned to his native Massachusetts and began picking off victims. The first two, 69-yearold Philip McCloskey and 19-year-old Jonathan Rizzo, picked him up while he was hitchhiking, a move prosecutors called a ruse to find targets. He persuaded both men to accompany him to isolated wooded areas where he tied them up and stabbed them to death in separate
incidents. His third victim, 58-year-old Robert Whitney, encountered Sampson when he went to check on a friend’s vacation home on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. Sampson, who was hiding there, strangled Whitney, later telling police that he had gotten tired of getting victims’ blood on himself. The jury sentenced Sampson to death for Rizzo’s killing but not McCloskey’s. They did not consider Whitney’s murder as it occurred in another jurisdiction. Defense attorneys had urged the jury to spare Sampson, citing a slew of factors including his history of drug abuse. Kristin Toussaint contributed reporting. REUTERS
BRIEF BU grad’s death highlights need for Vision Zero campaign Flowers mark the spot on Sunset Street in Boston where a young woman’s life was taken this weekend. Jessica Cosman, 22, of North Grafton, a recent Boston University graduate, was taking a walk during the Saturday snowstorm with her boyfriend when a car skidded out of control and hit her. Now residents of the notoriously steep Mission Hill neighborhood are asking for answers. “It’s not surprising that a car lost control coming down the street,” resident Lindsay Jacobsen told WBZ. Cosman isn’t the first to die in the area. In 2009, a Boston firefighter died when he lost his truck brakes on Parker Hill Avenue and slid into a building. charged. “It’s just really sad. Someone died just standing on the sidewalk. That should never happen,” Jacobsen said to WBZ. In 2016, at least 17 people died in traffic-related fatalities
— 12 of them were walking city streets when they were hit. A citywide initiative is looking to change that. With a program called Vision Zero, the city has made a promise to eliminate — or at least dramatically reduce — the number of traffic fatalities on city streets by 2030. Since Mayor Marty Walsh adopted the plan in December 2015, the city has worked to connect with the community by establishing a task force, conducted rapid response visits to crash sites where serious injury or fatality happened, it has created the Boston’s Safest Driver app to publicize best practices and Vision Zero. In terms of prevention, the city worked with the state legislature to reduce speed limits. On Monday the speed limit on city streets dropped to 25 mph in an effort to make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. ERIN TIERNAN

Channing Tatum posts nude photo of wifey Clothes are optional in this house. Channing Tatum is clearly a big fan of his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, although his latest photo may prove to be a bit overzealous on his part. guest at the Golden Globes on Sunday night and his appearance prompted a very nice reaction from his peers. The actor was there to present a montage from “Moonlight,” which he produced, and the crowd responded with a deafening ovation. Brad has of course been dealing with some serious baby mama drama as the divorce proceedings between him and Angelina get underway. The two are also battling over custody in regards to their six children. This definitely felt like it was Hollywood’s way of declaring they’re Team Brad.

Martin Scorsese doesn’t watch new movies The legendary filmmaker talks about “Silence” and feeling gloomy about the world.
Looking to the future
MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Martin Scorsese isn’t someone you imagine wracked with doubt. His films — in particular, “Goodfellas,” “Casino” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” — are confident bursts of electricity, every little piece perfectly in place. But it took around two decades for him to realize how to make a film of “Silence,” Shusaku Endo’s beloved 1966 novel, about Jesuit priests from Portugal who journey to 17th century Japan, where authorities have deemed Christianity punishable by death. Scorsese first read Endo’s novel in the late ’80s, while shooting a sequence in “Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.”
Martin Scorsese directs Andrew Garfield, playing a Jesuit priest encountering oppression in 17th-century Japan, on the set of his new film, “Silence.” KERRY BROWN
ly, make a lot of other pictures.” The result is a complete shift from 2013’s keyed-up “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “Silence” — starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver as his main priests and Liam Neeson as another,
“I wanted to make it, but I didn’t know how,” Scorsese says. “It’s taken about 20 years to reach this form. I didn’t know how to translate it into images. It took many years to reread the book, make notes all the way through — and, ultimate-
rumored to have “apostatized,” or denounced his Lord — is the most serene film Scorsese has ever made. Even when Japanese converts are being crucified at sea or burned alive, the images are calm and restrained. “That was one thing
Scorsese is among the last of the great titans of 1970s filmmaking who still commands sizable budgets. But even he’s feeling gloomy about the times. “I haven’t seen that many modern movies over the last two or three years. I just stopped, because the images don’t mean anything. We’re just completely saturated with images that don’t mean anything. Words certainly don’t mean anything; they’re twisted and
turned,” Scorsese says. “So where’s the meaning? Where’s the truth?” he asks. Scorsese’s answer: “Like Rodrigues [Garfield’s character], we have to learn to let go of the self, to start anew. It goes back to that question I had in ‘Mean Streets’: How do you live a good life, that is filled with meaning and compassion and respect for others, in a world like today? Maybe that’s why it took 25 years to be able to understand how to approach this script and this film. There is no meaning until you give it meaning.”
I realized over the years: This particular subject matter didn’t necessarily need a very aggressive visualization, so to speak,” the director says. The slow pace — which easily fills its 161 minutes (19 whole minutes shorter than “Wolf”) — also asks viewers to contemplate issues of faith. “That has always been foremost in my mind, no
matter what I’ve done,” Scorsese explains. “Even going back to ‘Mean Streets,’ the opening line is, ‘You don’t make up for your sins in the church; you do it in the street and in the home. All the rest is nonsense.’ Meaning that you don’t separate religion when you go into the building, then you go outside and behave differently. The struggle is outside.”

Winter hair woes? Mario Russo shares his best tips for combating your strands’ seasonal struggles. CARLY OLSON @MetroBOS

Known for making edgy styles wearable, hair expert Mario Russo has 30 years of cutting Bostonians’ trendy tresses under his belt. He’s since expanded his flagship Newbury Street location to the Seaport, where he opened his second Salon Mario Russo late last summer. The new 22 Liberty space has allowed Russo to bring his affinity for art into the salon. The salon is showing fine art works from Samson’s Project, a gallery in the South End. The art displayed in the salon is updated regularly. “We try to change the art around because it recreates the atmosphere of the space and
inspires clients, Russo says. Meanwhile, our own ever-changing atmosphere has us fighting hat hair, static cling and winter dryness. We asked Russo for his sage advice for protecting against New England hair struggles. Slow down on the shampoo With the winter cold comes excessive dry, brittle hair. Russo explains that blasting heaters in your apartment or office in combination with outdoor conditions exacerbate common hair dryness. Overshampooing only adds to the problem. Russo recommends shampooing twice a week to keep strands strong. “Typically every three to four days is more than enough, Russo says. He notes that a shampoo designed for dry hair — even if used just in the wintertime — can be a
worthwhile purchase. He recommends Kerastase Bain Magistral Shampoo ($41, kerastase-usa. com/bain) for an extra coat of moisture.
Mario Russo PROVIDED
Give hair extra protection to preserve shine Protecting against dry hair can also happen outside the shower. While you may know the best conditioner route for your hair (and maybe that route is none), Russo recommends still adding the step of a leave-in protectant after every shampoo to seal in moisture. “Outside the shower, use a conditioning spray to protect the hair from dryness. Use it after you towel dry hair and proceed with styling, he says. The result? Sleek, shiny strands.
Use a moisturizing crème to kill yaways and frizz Wearing a hat or hood on your morning commute can leave your ‘do looking tousled, and not in the cool girl-meetsbedhead way. Russo suggests a solution that doesn’t involve ditching your trusty warm layers. Use an anti-frizz cream with a lotion-like texture to smooth tresses without getting sticky or heavy. “Lightly apply the product and fluff the hair back up,â€? Russo says. “Even if you have a light moisturizing lotion in your purse [for skin], use the leftover lotion on your hands and run it through your hair.â€?

How to work out during your commute wellbeing Can’t make it to the gym? You can exercise while in transit. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

We all spend several idle minutes — sometimes hours — daily waiting for the train or the bus on the way to and from work. Reading or listening to music can help keep you occupied, but there’s another way to optimize your time in transit. From stretching on the subway platform to meditating while you ride, here’s how to stay active during these (inactive) moments.
While waiting on the platform According to Jenn Menzer, a fitness and nutrition coach and founder of Jenn Menzer Wellness in Boston, there are plenty of stretches and strength-

Menzer is also fond of the tree stand: bring one foot to the opposite inner shin for a standing balance and core challenge. Quad stretches are easy to do while standing, as are glute squeezes: “clench and squeeze your glutes for 30 seconds at a time for a tight, toned tush, she says.

pectoral muscles. Facing away from the bench, place your hands behind you, bending your elbows up and down to lift and lower your body. All those bags you’re carrying can be transformed into weights. Do bicep curls with your purse or briefcase, or lateral raises by lifting your luggage out to the side, forming a “T shape. If you have ample space on either side of you, try side leg raises:
stand on one leg and raise the other to the side for a 15 count; then switch legs.
While riding Congrats, you’re on your way. Jennifer Schelter, a Philadelphia-based yoga instructor and mindfulness coach, has tips for a peaceful ride. To meditate during the commute: Close your eyes and count (silently) to seven while you breathe in,
then to 11 as you exhale. Repeat this sequence of slow, deep breaths, all the while focusing on the sensations of the body. If you’re stressed out about the day of work ahead, try practicing positive visualization. Picture yourself at ease completing the tasks ahead. “Visualize the best-case scenario; then visualize the worse-case scenario. Resolve to commit to the best-case scenario, she explains.

Hole in his story
CRUNCH TIME TV has supplanted film when it comes to mustsee viewing, and the biggest TV stars in the world are athletes, if TV ratings are any indication. The football playoffs doubled the Golden Globes in the ratings Sunday night, the latest sign that sports is
king in America. With sports’ popularity at a fever pitch, fans want to know every detail possible about their favorite athletes, and that’s where we come in. This is Crunch Time — Metro’s space
that gives you all the nonmainstream dirt on your favorite players. We’ll feature wild trade rumors, sexy hookups and social-media beefs — basically everything you would NOT expect from a traditional sports section.
The Packers should charge Odell Beckham Jr. with malicious destruction of property after the Giants’ diva receiver punched a hole in a wall outside the Lambeau Field groundskeepers’ office. A member of the Green Bay grounds crew is said to have confronted Beckham about the in-
cident but he was quickly told to have sex with himself. “[The first grounds crew member] said, ‘C’mon man,’ and he was told to f— off,” Packers

PR Peyton Image is everything for Peyton Manning, and not coincidentally — his PR team is brilliant. The narrative that No. 18 “went out on top” has been written, and the masses have eaten it up. But here’s what we’re quickly forgetting. Despite a Super Bowl ring last February, 2016 wasn’t a great year for Peyton. A year ago he was being accused of taking HGH, and an old scandal in which he allegedly dragged his junk across a female trainer’s face came to light again. On the playing field, things weren’t much better, despite
the Broncos’ success. He averaged Tim Tebow numbers in the playoffs (179 yards passing per game) as Denver’s defense led the way. In this current season, he allowed time to heal wounds. He popped up on a bunch of feel-good commercials, and those ugly stories from last year have faded away. This coming off-season expect him to get the largest contract ever from a TV network so he can become its No. 1 football talking head.
grounds-crew member Mark Hollister said, via NJ.com. “No one saw [Odell] punching the wall, but basically he was standing right there.”

Snapping a picture of Bill Belichick in a public setting is not a recommended practice, as the Patriots’ head coach can and will go all Kanye on any breathing creature with a camera. A guy named Adam Markopoulos, though, was safe and took a pic of a sleeping Belichick on a Nantucket ferry this past weekend, with Belichick’s girlfriend, Linda Holliday. sleeping in the coach’s lap. When ESPN’s assignment desk asked Markopoulos for permission to use the photo, the Pats fan shut down the Worldwide Leader, tweeting, “@ ESPNAssignDesk No chance @ESPN, you started Deflategate. DO. The good news about the Bruins The B’s can kill a penalty like nobody’s business.
The road ahead Today: Bruins at Blues (8 p.m., NESN)
RICH SLATE @RichSlate
sports@metro.us
These days, where everyone is an expert and a tough critic, it’s much easier to poke holes in the Bruins’ (21-17-5) overall game rather than get specific about things that they actually do well. Here’s the biggest positive for the B’s: Their penalty kill unit is excellent. After Sunday night’s 4-3 overtime loss at Carolina (18-15-7), the B’s are ironically tied with the Hurricanes for the top penalty kill percentage in the NHL (88.0 percent). The struggles of Boston’s power play (currently 25th in the NHL, converting at 14.5 percent) are well established at this point, but head coach Claude Julien and his team don’t get enough credit for how good they are a man (or two) down. For most clubs, getting a power play is a welcome thing, but for Boston it has become an issue on multiple levels. The B’s are rarely converting on the man-advantage and they have allowed five shorthanded goals, which

is way too many just halfway through the regular season. There were only two penalties called in the contest Sunday (one on each team) but the Hurricanes nearly made Boston pay when the home team was shorthanded. “On that power play there where we gave them two shorthanded breakaways (by Hurri-
canes forward Jordan Staal who intercepted pucks in the neutral zone), he (rookie goaltender Zane McIntyre) made some big saves,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. In 2016-17, Boston has scored three shorthanded goals: two by center Dominic Moore (tied for the NHL lead) and one by left wing Brad Marchand.
The Bruins have many other players that are very solid on the penalty kill, including centers Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, plus defenseman Zdeno Chara, etc. There is perhaps no more backbreaking play in hockey than a shorthanded goal as Marchand showed on Saturday night in Boston’s 4-0 win at Florida (17-16-8).
MEDICAL RESEARCH
It was the opening goal (at 12:48 of the first period) and it put the Panthers behind the eight-ball right away — from which they never recovered. Marchand has become a topnotch penalty killer in the NHL as his 20 shorthanded goals since 2009-10 have proved (the most in the league). Like any sport, the key
to success for the Bruins is to find some balance. It will be fine if their penalty kill drops a few spots in the rankings as long as the power play perks up a bit in conjunction. Other than Anaheim (21-13-8), the Bruins are the only club with a goal-differential of zero (105 goals scored, 105 goals allowed). That’s a good season summary for the B’s, who find themselves as a misleading second-place team in the Atlantic Division: one point ahead of Ottawa (2114-4) who has played four fewer games and three points ahead of Toronto (18-13-8) who has also played four fewer games. Boston is at St. Louis (21-14-5) on Tuesday (8 p.m., NESN) in former Blues captain David Backes’ (11 goals, 10 assists) first game back in his old city.
