A U.S. government weather forecaster on Thursday said current La Niña conditions are likely to dissipate by February and neutral conditions are likely to continue during the ﬁrst half of the year. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC), an agency of the National Weather Service, said in a monthly forecast that La Niña continued through December and the eﬀects, even as the conditions

fade, may continue to be felt during the coming months. Last month, the forecaster predicted that the weak La Niña was likely to fade early this year. Typically less damaging than El Niño, La Niña is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the equatorial Paciﬁc Ocean and tends to occur unpredictably every two to seven years. Amazon.com said it plans to create more than 100,000 jobs in the United States, from software development to warehouse work. The online retailer will grow its full-time U.S. workforce by more than 50 percent to over 280,000 in the next 18 months, it said in a press release. Amazon is spending heavily on new warehouses so it can stock goods closer to customers and

Drugstore chain CVS has started selling a generic version of Impax Laboratories Inc’s emergency allergy injection, a device similar to Mylan NV’s controversial Epipen. Impax’s branded Adrenaclick has not really caught on with patients and doctors and is not considered by regulators to be an exact copy of EpiPen. Adrenaclick’s

generic version is available at all CVS Pharmacy locations at a cash price of $109.99 for a two-pack for both insured and cash-paying patients without insurance, CVS said. CVS’ move comes amid widespread uproar over drug price gouging. Mylan has been lambasted by consumers and lawmakers for raising EpiPen prices six-fold in less than a decade. The Republican-led Senate has already begun its effort to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law, but Democrats are not giving up their fight to keep the Affordable Care Act intact. On Sunday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren will lead a rally at Faneuil Hall alongside Sen. Ed Markey and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to “save health care.” Called “Our First Stand,” the Boston rally is just one of several initiatives across the country, according to the website of Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator and former presidential candidate who is helping spearhead the effort. Health care rallies are slated for such cities as Honolulu, Chicago and Hartford, Connecticut. Warren first announced news of the event via an email to supporters. She noted that when the Affordable Care Act was signed, “Massachusetts went all in — expanding Medicaid, setting up an insurance exchange, and working to make coverage more affordable.” If the law is repealed, Warren said, commonwealth residents have a lot to lose. uninsured rate fell 36 percent since the ACA was signed into law in 2010, meaning 107,000 Bay Staters got health insurance coverage, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The more than four million residents covered through employer-sponsored health care saw benefits from ACA as well, like an end to annual and lifetime limits on their plans, free preventive care (including flu shots, cancer screenings and contraception) and a slower increase of premiums, according to an HHS report.

Police officers to become ‘Bigs’ to city’s youth

Jeff Lopes has been a “big brother” to a Dorchester high schooler since March 2015. Lopes himself grew in Dorchester and he saw a lot of friends fall into what he called “the wrong path.” He wanted to help other kids avoid that. Lopes is also a police officer, and soon more of his colleagues will become mentors to Boston kids as part of the Bigs in Blue program. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay and the Boston Police Department announced on Thursday a partnership that connects officers with young residents for a relationship both organizations hope will benefit

About an hour into the new thriller “Sleepless,” Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan beat the crap out of each other. It’s a knock-down, drag-out smackdown in a hotel room, with broken furniture and each one taking turns delivering the other a perfect blow. “She kicked my ass,” Foxx tells us. “Michelle socked me in the mouth, for real.” No, seriously: Michelle Monaghan punched Jamie Foxx in the mouth. “I had just had it with him,” Monaghan jokes. “He was having too good of a time, so I put him in his place. I chipped his tooth.” Or they just befell

The good news is Foxx’s best friend is a dentist, and he happened to live in Atlanta, where they were filming. This savior grabbed the spackle and made the tooth r i g h t again. “ I t didn’t hurt our relations h i p , ” Foxx says of his co-star. “But it took a minute.” T h e i r characters in “Sleepless” are actually at each other’s throats. Foxx plays Vincent Downs, an undercover cop who’s spent years infiltrating

powerful drug kingpin, who then kidnaps his son (Octavius J. Johnson), demanding he return the goods. So begins a twisty thriller largely set in a high-end casino, in which Vincent squares off against scary heavies (like Scoot McNairy) as well as Monaghan’s Jennifer, a dogged detective who doesn’t realize our hero’s undercover, and wants to take him down. “We’ve seen this kind of movie before, but we put our imprint on it,” Foxx says. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel; we just put some new spokes on it.” Even better: It’s a straight-up

Bring the pain Foxx has played cops before — the posters for “Sleepless” look vaguely similar to the ones for 2006’s “Miami Vice,” in which he played Tubbs — but for Monaghan it was new. She has action on her résumé (“The Bourne Supremacy,” “Mission: Impossible III”), but those ﬁlms kept her on the sidelines or put her in peril. Her character here is strong and punchy. “It’s a role you don’t see that often: a woman who’s single, doesn’t have kids — that’s kind of rare in Hollywood,” Monaghan says, with a knowing laugh. “She’s a woman living in a man’s world, and she’s frustrated and damaged and slightly ﬂawed.” For her, the action was hard, but not unwelcome. “It’s fun to push yourself,” she says. She was an active kid, which didn’t entirely help on this gig. “I grew up with brothers. I was a little rough and tumble, I suppose — a bit of a tomboy. But this was another level. You’re doing things with slight precision, so you don’t get hurt or hurt other people. It takes a lot of concentration and dedication. But it’s a role. It’s my job.” Even for someone as experienced with action as Foxx, “Sleepless” could be tough. He has three big mano a mano tussles, which isn’t easy for any actor. “I had to go there. I was in the jungles, you know — like in the rain forest of my mind, catching the spirits so we could get through it,” he says. Even when he’s not punching and kicking people, he had to be on the run from a particularly tireless henchman. “I haven’t had a white man chasing me that long since I was young.”

Last week the presidentelect of the United States went on Twitter and ridiculed Arnold Schwarzenegger over poor Nielsen ratings for “The Celebrity Apprentice.” In response, the former governor of California wished the best of luck to our new commander in chief and uploaded a video of himself reading a passage from Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address. Surreal as this exchange may have seemed for anyone who grew up in the ’80s — or really, to anyone at all — it wasn’t the first time Schwarzenegger facedoff against a tacky game show host with authoritarian tendencies.

Ah-nald’s comically prescient cult favorite “The Running Man” screens this Friday and Saturday night as part of the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s After Midnight program. Loosely based on a book by Stephen King, the dystopian satire begins in 2017, when after an economic collapse everyone becomes obsessed with crummy reality game shows. (How far-fetched.) The most popular is “The Running Man,” where criminals compete for pardons while being stalked by gladiators in a citywide arena. Schwarzenegger stars as a wrongly convicted ex-cop who uncovers the nefarious behindthe-scenes machinations of the show’s sinister host, played with great, hammy brio by “Family Feud’s” Richard Dawson. One of those movies that’s a lot of fun to watch without being

particularly good, “The Running Man” is a chintzy-looking affair that gets by on stunt casting and a killer concept. Released in the fall of 1987, the film couldn’t help but suffer from comparisons with that summer’s previous hunted-Schwarzenegger picture “Predator,” as well as “RoboCop,” which had just pulled off the whole futuristic consumerist satire thing with considerably more sophistication. Viewed today, it’s a charmingly junky Bpicture with the kind of limited production values Schwarzenegger was already outgrowing. Indeed, the Austrian Oak had few kind

“Live by Night”

Peter Berg’s recreation of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was clearly intended as an ode to resilience, to communities coming together, to love trumping hate. But it’s also a Peter Berg film (see: “Lone Survivor,” “Battleship”). It’s an adrenaline junkie’s reckless version of a populist weepie, filled with awesome dudes toting big, cool guns, officials laughing away suspects’ Miranda rights and the Newtown shootout blown up to D-Day on a suburban street. That doesn’t mean it’s not bluntly effective, though you have to do research to learn that star Mark Wahlberg is the only one not playing a real person. His dogged sergeant is a composite character created only so that one of Boston’s most successful sons can save a good chunk of the day. MATT PRIGGE

They don’t make them like they used to. We hear that about movies a lot these days. That’s why it’s always a treat to see, say, a rare new gangster movie

“20th Century Women” The characters in Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women” have great taste. Living in a modest commune-of-sorts in 1979 Santa Barbara — a home lorded over by a surly mother hen (Annette Bening) — they love David Bowie, Talking Heads, Neu! and The Raincoats. They think raising kids without a dad is ﬁne. They know that Planned Parenthood oﬀers a wide variety of lifesaving services. But their great taste and great beliefs don’t always make them happy, or make their lives easier. The other tenants are a mixed-bunch: There’s Bening’s teen son (Lucas Jade Zumann), his teen crush (Elle Fanning), a cancer-survivor photographer (Greta Gerwig) and a strapping-but-sensitive handyman (Billy Crudup), all under one roof. Not much happens,

— and a sock to the gut when they turn out kind of lousy. The story follows Ben Afﬂeck’s Joe Coughlin, the son of a bigwig Boston police captain (Brendan Gleeson) who went to World War I and came back a bootlegger. He ﬁnds himself

plotwise — it’s a year in their lives, on the cusp of the Reagan era they tragically don’t know is coming — but Mills keeps things engaging. He has a gift for avoiding sentimentality or banal scenes. His deeper, more devastating insights have a way of sneaking up on you from nowhere.

reluctantly caught in between two crime bosses, one of whom sends him to Tampa to oversee the rum division. There’s a lot going on in Dennis Lehane’s novel, and Aﬄeck seems to want to get it all in. It’s no fun to report that he’s made a stilted mess. MP

Even better, he’s gotten all the quirky annoyances that marred his “Thumbsucker” and even parts of “Beginners” out of his system. Here, Mills gives us fascinating people to hang with. Its coda nicks the ﬁnale of “Six Feet Under,” but honest to god it might do it even better. MP

When people talk Pedro Almodovar, they talk about his loud colors, his peerless insights into women, his sincere and unabashed love of old-fashioned melodrama. But maybe his real gift is for structure. “Julieta” — like “The Skin I Live In,” “Bad Education” and “Talk to Her” — is a movie whose story doesn’t

become fully clear until the movie’s nearly over. When we have our eureka moment late in, it’s no mere cheap plot twist; the structure is a sly and psychologically fascinating plunge into the art of self-deception. Emma Suarez plays a seemingly contented middle-age woman who one day hears news of the daughter she hasn’t seen in years. We don’t know

exactly what happened, and the rest of the film is an epic flashback, catching us up to speed and effectively giving us one of the great breakup movies, albeit between mother and daughter. Three years after â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mechanical Bullâ&#x20AC;? (and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charmingly catchy single â&#x20AC;&#x153;Supersoakerâ&#x20AC;?), Kings of Leon timidly re-emerged with their seventh studio album, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walls.â&#x20AC;? This time, the band â&#x20AC;&#x201D; known for their high emotions, both in song and amongst themselves (theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re brothers, after all) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; worked with Markus Dravs, the UK-based producer known for working his finesse on Florence + the Machine, Arcade Fire, Coldplay and Mumford and Sons. The result is a tight 10-track that dropped in October, trickling out the likes of the unexpected moseyinducing â&#x20AC;&#x153;Muchachoâ&#x20AC;? and abstractly Springsteen-esque title track, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walls.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Waste a Momentâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Find Meâ&#x20AC;? might incite a toe tap to your dad and his friends, but they play just fine by us, too. We caught up with Jared Followill â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the youngest of the Nashville foursome â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from Atlantic City, just before the band hits the road for a U.S. tour and the summer festival circuit.

Now that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in rehearsals and have played the album live â&#x20AC;&#x201D; do you notice any of Markusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; handiwork coming through on stage? Maybe, but not obviously. His influences are greatly shown when we play anything from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walls,â&#x20AC;? but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lock ourselves into album tours. We see our live show as a growing thing; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been there, we just add to it. Seven albums in â&#x20AC;&#x201D; how are you going to narrow it down? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tough. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s any way to make everyone happy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; including us. One song Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m dying to see live is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Muchacho,â&#x20AC;? just because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such a diďŹ&#x20AC;erent vibe from what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re used to seeing from you. That, I can say for a fact, will be there. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re running through the set now, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Muchachoâ&#x20AC;? is something weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited to play. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a song that came together late [in the recording process] for us, and there was a weird vision for us. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a super bar-band, karaokestyle song. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s somewhat challenging, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be interesting to see how it works out in these arena venues. Given that you guys are family, do you ďŹ nd youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always being asked about how that plays

I’m on to the AFC Championship. I’ve been pretty outspoken about that in recent days. There’s no way the Houston Texans come to Foxboro on Saturday night and end the New England Patriots’ season. If they do, I’ll call it the most shocking Patriots loss I’ve ever seen. That’s right, even more shocking than losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. That game was played at a neutral site, on the biggest stage. At

that point, anything can happen. And it did. Losing that game and seeing a potential 19-0 season fall apart was shocking, for sure. But I would have been even more shocked if it happened at Gillette Stadium. The Texans come to town as a 16-point underdog, having been given a layup in the wild-card round, and taking full advantage of it, defeating the Derek Carr-less Oakland Raiders 27-14 last weekend in Houston. They won their division with a 9-7 record, and have already lost to the Patriots this season, 27-0, back in Week 3 at Gillette. Jacoby Brissett was the Patriots’ quarterback in that game. On Saturday night, it will be Tom Brady under center for New England. And he smells blood. So how much time do you really want to spend on the Texans? Like I said, I’m on to the AFC title game, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22. Kickoff is set for 6:40 p.m. If Saturday night goes as expected, the Patriots will be hosting either No. 2 seed Kansas City or No. 3 seed

Pittsburgh. The Chiefs host the Steelers on Sunday afternoon in the divisional round. The only question I have now is: Who would

you rather face, if you’re the Patriots? My prediction is that Kansas City comes to New England for the AFC Championship. It might not be a popular opinion, seeing how dangerous Pittsburgh’s offensive weapons looked in the Steelers’ 30-12 win over the Miami Dolphins last weekend. And you know what? If Pittsburgh was hosting its divisional round game against Kansas City, then I’d probably be leaning toward the Steelers. But it’s in Kansas City. So I’m rolling with the home cooking. The Chiefs already got whooped by the Steelers this season, 43-14, back in Week 4 in Pittsburgh. Since that loss though, Kansas City won 10 of its last 12 to win the AFC West at 12-4 and clinch a first round bye. It’s an improvement from last season, when the Chiefs were the No. 5 seed and had to play on the

road in the wild-card round. They took care of business, going into Houston and crushing the Texans, 30-0, only to lose to the Patriots in the divisional round, 27-20, at Gillette. Alex Smith doesn’t have the Super Bowl rings that Ben Roethlisberger does, but Smith is sneaky good in the playoffs. In five career playoff starts over the last six years, Smith has thrown for 1,309 yards with 11 touchdowns and only one interception. And while the defensive stats show the Chiefs and Steelers to be fairly similar this season, the eye test tells me that I’d rather see Pittsburgh’s defense come to Foxboro than Kansas City’s. The Patriots already defeated the Steelers this season, 27-16, back in Week 7 in Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger was injured and didn’t play in that game, but you’d have to think that Brady and company would

be good for at least 35 points at home against the Steelers. At least, that’s how I would expect it to play out. The Chiefs don’t have the star-studded offensive cast that the Steelers do, but they just seem like a much more well-rounded team. What it truly comes down to is, I don’t think either Kansas City or Pittsburgh will come into New England upset the top team in the AFC. But if there’s one team I’m more concerned about than the other, it’s the Chiefs. So, this weekend, as I completely overlook the Houston Texans in the divisional round, I’ll be rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then, I’ll be on to Super Bowl LI. It’s January, which around New England means it’s finally football season. Fresh off their first-round bye, the Patriots will host the Houston Texans on Saturday (8:15 p.m., CBS) in the divisional round. It’s a record seventh straight year that the Patriots will host a divisional game, as they finished with the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the sixth time since the new format was established in 1990 — also the most of any NFL team. If they can beat the Texans, they’ll go to their sixth straight AFC Championship Game, which — you guessed it — would be an NFL record, breaking a tie with the Oakland Raiders (1973-1977). According to Vegas, the Patriots should cruise to that game. They are a 16-point favorite over the Texans, which would be the fourth-largest point spread in NFL playoff history if it stands. But the Patriots have been on both ends of the pointspread spectrum, beating the St. Louis Rams as 14-point underdogs in Super Bowl XXXVI and losing to the New York Giants as 12-point favorites in Super Bowl XLII. As we all know, anything can happen in the postseason. The Texans, while lacking the talent that New England possesses, aren’t going to let a large point spread keep them from taking the field Saturday night. “We gave ourselves a shot, we gave ourselves a chance to play for the big dance,” former Patriots defensive lineman and current Texan Vince Wilfork told reporters. “We’re in that spot. It’s going to have no bearing on how we’ll go up there and how we feel because

No team allows less yards than the Texans (301.3 per game), which is why they’ve made it this far. The Patriots offense will be tested in that sense. But c’mon, regardless of the stats, the real test is going to be on the Texans. Yes, Tom Brady has lost a couple big games in his career — but he’s won a heck of a lot more of them. There are two full pages of Brady playoff notes in this week’s Patriots game release. The accolades are endless, but a few stick out. Brady is the all-time postseason leader in: touchdown passes (56), passing yards (7,957), completions (738), most 300-yard games (10), and perhaps most important, wins (22). He’s more fresh than usual after his suspension-shortened 12-game season, and still put up MVP numbers at age 39.
