OBAMA COMMUTES MANNING SENTENCE
BRITAIN TO LEAVE EU SINGLE MARKET
In one of his final acts before leaving office, President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. military intelligence analyst behind the biggest breach of classified materials in U.S. history, the White House said. Manning has been a focus of a worldwide debate on government secrecy since she provided more than 700,000 documents, videos, diplomatic cables

The deep-sea search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended on Tuesday without any trace being found of the plane that vanished in 2014 with 239 people on board, the three countries involved in the search said. The location of Flight MH370 has become one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries since the plane, a Boeing 777, disappeared en route to Beijing
from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. “Despite every effort using the best science available … the search has not been able to locate the aircraft,” Malaysian, Australian and Chinese authorities said in a statement. “The decision to suspend the underwater search has not been taken lightly nor without sadness.” The last search vessel left the area on Tuesday, the three countries said. Watch out, Melania! Donna Fagan from Staten Island is coming to the inauguration in a custom-made dress that attests to her adoration of the incoming president. “I took some plastic signs from the campaign office after the election was over and had my friend from FIT whip up this number,” said Fagan, referring to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Fagan won tickets to Donald Trump’s inauguration in Congressman Dan Donovan’s ticket lottery. She’s not sure how close she’ll be standing
to President Trump in her plastic dress, but she doesn’t care. “As long as I can hear it, and as long as I can feel it — and I already feel it, I’m getting a little bit of the chills thinking about it,” she said. “It’s important just to be there.” Congress members are considered hosts of the inauguration and were each allotted a certain number of tickets to the affair. To make distribution fair, Donovan’s office created a ticket lottery on their website. Donovan is the sole Republican Congressman in New York City. Staten Island, which is included in his district, was the only borough to give Trump a majority of the votes cast. Donovan’s office had to make special accommodations for his constituents’ overwhelming interest in witnessing Trump
sworn into office on Friday. By Dec. 21, they had more than 2,000 raffle entries for only about 100 tickets. To scrounge up a few more, Donovan’s staff called up Democratic counterparts in less enthusiastic districts. Contributions from Reps. Jerry Nadler and Nydia Velazquez — both of whom are boycotting the inauguration — brought the total to over 200 tickets, Donovan’s Press Secretary Alexia Sikora said. “Some of my colleagues were generous to add some extra tickets,” Donovan, who came to office 20 months ago, told Metro. “This is history we are going to witness on Friday. So many people wanted to go. In recent memory, there hasn’t been so many people here this excited about a change in administration.” Staten Island’s Trump
fandom is “reflective of the feelings that a lot of America had when President Trump made his campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again,’ that they didn’t think the country was as great as it could be,” he said. “They couldn’t afford their mortgages, couldn’t afford tuition,

securing Obama’s residence in Chicago. President Trump lives on the second busiest intersection in the world. “Being the sole Republican representing the city at a time when the Republicans are in the majority in Congress and with a
Republican president, it’s a powerful and responsible position.” To the 53 Democratic Congress members who are declining to attend the inauguration, Donovan proposes peace. “I hope beginning noon on Friday everyone realizes the politics are over and the election is over and it’s time to govern,” he said. Fagan, a longtime political volunteer — who fed Trump campaign staff with trays of lasagna and baked hams — said Trump is a true patriot, cut from her cloth. “He speaks New York. He speaks my language,” she said. “Local boy does good. He’s right to the point and gives the answer, he says what he has to say and moves on.” Donovan agreed. “Some of the love is him being a New Yorker. It’s hometown pride,” he said.

City officials tell Staten Island woman to get rid of Wilbur After five years, Cristy Matteo must find a new home for her pet pig. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork nikki.mascali@metro.us
Five years after bringing her pet pig home from a Utah breeder, Cristy Matteo of Staten Island is being forced to give him up by the end of the month. “Someone called 311 on me, that’s how this whole thing started, Matteo told SILive.com on Sunday. “Almost five years, and I never had a problem. In addition to marsupials, sea mammals and many lizards, most farm animals are banned in New York City. Matteo had a case for “harboring a wild animal dismissed in May, but was later back in court when the city Department of Health and
Wilbur has resided on Staten Island for about ďŹ ve years. SILIVE.COM
Mental Hygiene said that Wilbur needed a rabies shot to continue living in her Great Kills home. While she did get the 180-pound pig the rabies shot, the FDA doesn’t have an approved pig vaccination for the disease. “There is no documented case of a pig getting rabies, Mat-
teo said. Rabies cases in pigs are extremely rare in the USA, according to the North American Pet Pig Association’s website. Because most exposure to the disease would come from a run-in with infected wildlife such as skunks or raccoons, “pigs housed
indoors are extremely unlikely to be exposed to the rabies virus if the other feline and canine household pets have been properly vaccinated. Wilbur lives alongside Matteo’s dog, Milo. In addition to being a family pet, he’s also been designated an emotional support animal by the National Service Animal Registry as he comforts Matteo’s father, who is battling cancer. Still, Wilbur has until Jan. 31 to move out, and if inspectors come to her home and he’s still there, “they’ll seize him, Matteo said. “If they seize him, I’m afraid they will kill him. Matteo said a North Carolina refuge has offered to take Wilbur in, but she’s hopeful he can stay home. “The only thing I ask is that people just try to help me save my pig and come up with any kind of solution, Matteo said.

Smoking could be $2.3M habit, analysts say Smokers who want to kick their dirty little habit in the new year might find an incentive in a study released Tuesday that reveals just how much they’re paying per pack. Personal finance site WalletHub crunched the numbers across the country, and found packa-day smokers can pay up to $2.3 millionover a lifetime for health care, lost income and, of course, the habit. In New York state, a single pack of cigarettes can range from $10 to $13. To light up a whole pack each day over the
course of 51 years, a New Yorker can expect to shell out just shy of $200,000 for cigarettes. If smokers took that cash and instead invested in the stock market over 51 years, they would’ve earned back a whopping $1.6 million. New Yorkers pay the highest excise tax on cigarettes at $4.35 per pack. Residents in New York City can add an additional $1.50 on top of that. But those Northeast states also see the lowest rates of smoking, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). ALEXIS SACHDEV

Man sues over false arrest, racist taunts The 35-year-old was taken into custody after a computer glitch showed he had a warrant for failing to pay a skateboarding ticket. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork nikki.mascali@metro.us
A black Army veteran who was falsely arrested in August because of a computer glitch spent a night in jail listening to racist comments from his white arresting NYPD officer, a new lawsuit alleges. Najja Plowden says he was walking his dog in Brower Park in Crown Heights after dark that evening when two NYPD officers in a van began questioning him. Officer Nicholas Loweth allegedly asked Plowden for his identification, which the 35-year-old did not have. Loweth ran Plowden’s name in the

NYPD’s system, and a warrant from a 2013 skateboarding summons came up. Plowden informed the officer that the warrant and summons were dismissed in May, but was told that he was going to be arrested. After police dropped his dog off at his home, Plowden was taken to the 77th Precinct.
While he was in custody, Loweth made racially charged comments to Plowden, including saying that he “wouldn’t have been stopped and detained if you’d been a white guy in a park at night on the Upper East Side,” the lawsuit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court on Friday alleges. Plowden told the New
York Daily News that the night he was arrested, there had been a white man in the park playing with his dog nearby. He also said there were no signs saying that the park was closed. Plowden’s lawsuit also claims that Loweth made pro-Donald Trump comments and said the president-elect would end welfare used
by “ghetto” residents and “the abuse of resources” such as food stamps in minority neighborhoods. The lawsuit also confirmed that a judge did dismiss Plowden’s 2013 summons and warrant, but the computer system had not been updated. Due to his arrest, Plowden, an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and works as an occupational therapist for special-education students, has been declared ineligible for work while the Department of Education examines his case. “I’ve always treated officers with respect,” Plowden said. “I never thought this would ever happen to me.” Loweth and the NYPD declined to comment on the matter, according to the Daily News, and a spokesman for the city’s law department told the paper that the lawsuit “will be reviewed once we are served.”
HUMAN REMAINS FOUND Human torso, leg found in Bronx garbage facility: NYPD A female torso and leg were discovered inside a Bronx waste transfer station early Tuesday morning, the NYPD said. Employees of the Metropolitan Transfer Station at 287 Halleck St. in Hunts Point made the discovery around 4:42 a.m., as they moved garbage into trucks from the facility, PIX11 reported. Operations at the transfer station, which collects, destroys and processes garbage from all over the city, were halted as police combed the area for evidence. The remains have not been identified, and police are awaiting the cause of death to be determined by the medical examiner, the department said. NIKKI M. MASCALI

10 NEW YORK REAL ESTATE Trump’s childhood home put up for auction in New York City A house on a leafy New York City street where President-elect Donald Trump lived as a toddler is being auctioned off by a fellow real estate investor who bought it just last month. An auction firm was accepting sealed bids through 4 p.m. on Tuesday for the five-bedroom, Tudor-style home in the borough of Queens where Trump lived until age 4.
The winner of the auction would not immediately be known because the seller plans to consider the bids for as long as a few days, Misha Haghani, a principal at Paramount Realty USA, told Reuters in an email. Trump, whose official residence will be the White House once he is sworn in as president on Friday, has said that he would like to own his old home. Shown a photograph of it in September while on “The
Tonight Show,” Trump told host Jimmy Fallon: “Oh, that’s sad to look at that. I want to buy it. I want to buy it.” Representatives for Trump could not immediately be reached on Tuesday. Paramount Realty USA markets the property as Trump’s childhood home and as a chance to own a piece of history. Built around 1940 by Trump’s father, the real estate magnate Fred Trump, the house has a five-car
driveway, a fireplace, a sun room and a paneled study. Real estate investor Michael Davis purchased the house in December for $1.39 million, according to property records. He did so sight-unseen, without even driving by the house, the New York Post reported. Haghani declined to speculate on a possible winning price. Offers needed to be accompanied by a deposit of 10 percent. REUTERS Sen. Chuck Schumer GETTY IMAGES

Sen. Schumer to Trump: Don’t fire US consumer agency’s head
¡Hablamos Español!
One of the most powerful Democrats in the U.S. Congress on Tuesday pressed President-elect Donald Trump to keep the consumer financial watchdog agency’s current director, as rumors about a possible termination and replacement swirled. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters that Trump will break his campaign promise of “standing up for workers and consumers against the rigged system” if he fires the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) director, Richard Cordray, after taking office on Friday. “If Trump intends to keep any of his promises and unrig the system, he would keep Rich Cordray,” the senator from New York said in a phone call with reporters. Created in the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law, the CFPB has battled all sorts of lenders through regulation and litigation. It most recently
participated in a settlement with Wells Fargo for $190 million for allegedly creating ghost accounts. Some want Trump to not wait for the appeals court and fire Cordray for cause as soon as he becomes president. At the earliest, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is expected to announce in February whether it will review the case. Last week, Trump met with one of the agency’s biggest critics, former Republican Representative Randy Neugebauer of Texas, who is frequently mentioned as a top choice for to replace Cordray. Conservatives say Neugebauer would limit the reach of the CFPB, which they say has gone too far and does not have enough accountability. Congress is controlled by the Republican Party, and most Republicans would prefer having a commission in charge of the agency, instead of a director who both creates and enforces rules. REUTERS

Russia says it’s ready to talk to Trump about nukes, Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov GETTY IMAGES
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow was ready to talk to Presidentelect Donald Trump’s new administration about nuclear weapons and Syria, saying the two countries could together solve many of the world’s problems. Lavrov, speaking days before Trump’s inauguration, used an annual news conference to flag potential areas of cooperation and to belittle what he described as malicious attempts to link Trump to Russia in a negative light. Trump, who has praised President Vladimir Putin, has signaled he wants to improve strained ties with Russia despite U.S. intelligence agencies alleging the Kremlin chief ordered a cyber campaign to help him beat rival Hillary Clinton to the White House. Russia denies it tried to sway the U.S. election by hacking or other means. It has also dismissed as a fabrication a dossier written by a former officer in Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, which suggested Moscow had collected compromising information about Trump. Lavrov dismissed the dossier’s author, Christopher Steele, as “a fugitive charlatan from MI6” and said the dossier looked like part of a campaign to cause problems for Trump and his allies. Putin on Tuesday called the same dossier a hoax. While cautioning that the new U.S. administration would need to settle in before wider conclusions could be drawn, Lavrov signaled he was encouraged by the tenor
“By concentrating on a pragmatic search for mutual interests we can solve a lot of problems.” Lavrov
of the Trump team’s statements so far which he said suggested it would be possible to have a pragmatic relationship. “Trump has a particular set of views which differ a lot from his predecessor,” said Lavrov, who accused the Obama administration of wrecking cooperation across a swath of areas and of trying to recruit Russian diplomats as agents. “By concentrating on a pragmatic search for mutual interests we can solve a lot of problems.” He said Syria was one of the most promising areas for cooperation, saying the Kremlin had welcomed Trump’s statement that he wanted to make fighting global terrorism a priority. “What we hear from Donald Trump [on Syria] and his team speaks to how they have a different approach [to Obama] and won’t resort to double standards,” said Lavrov. On Syria, Lavrov said representatives from the new U.S. administration had been invited to take part in peace talks slated for Jan. 23 in Kazakhstan. He hoped U.S. officials would attend, he said, as that would be the first opportunity for Moscow and Washington to start talking about closer Syria cooperation. REUTERS

MILITARY Iraqi forces push Islamic State further back in Mosul Iraqi special forces pushed deeper into Islamic State-held districts in eastern Mosul and army units fought the insurgents inside a military base in the city’s north, officials said during the day on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the military had begun “movement” against Islamic State in the west of Mosul without
specifying what action was being taken there. Three months after the start of the U.S.-backed campaign, Islamic State has been driven out of about three quarters of the eastern districts of its Iraqi stronghold, ceding large areas along the Tigris River, which bisects Mosul from north to south. Renewed military progress has been made in the last two weeks, thanks to improved tactics and coordination between
different military units, U.S. and Iraqi military officials said. Advances slowed toward the end of last year as the military tried to avoid hitting civilians, they say, but now the capture of the entire east bank is imminent and will allow attacks in the city’s west, still fully held by the militants. Rapid response units of the Iraqi federal police have secured many southeastern districts along the Tigris,
spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Abdel Amir al-Mohammedawi, said. Iraq’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service, which has spearheaded advances inside Mosul, holds large sections of the east bank further north from where the federal police operate. Some Islamic State fighters had fled by boat across the river, taking civilians as human shields, Mohammedawi said. REUTERS

Woman sues Trump At a news conference in Los Angeles announcing the lawsuit on Tuesday, Zervos said she wanted Trump to apologize. One of about a dozen women who previously accused President-elect Donald Trump of making unwanted sexual advances filed a lawsuit against him in New York on Tuesday, alleging he had made false and defamatory statements about her in rejecting the accusation, causing her emotional and economic harm. The lawsuit filed by Summer Zervos, a one-time contestant on Trump’s reality television show “The Apprentice, is focused on a stream of denials Trump aimed at her and other women accusers last October, just weeks before the Nov. 8 presidential election, when Zervos
and others came forward to accuse the thencandidate of making unwanted sexual advances. At the time the women made their accusations, Trump, a Republican, who went on to win the election and who takes office on Friday, adamantly denied all the accusations in posts on Twitter, statements, interviews and comments at rallies. He suggested at one rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Oct. 14 that the accusers were fabricating their stories for publicity or to damage his campaign. With regard to Zervos specifically, Trump told the rally in Charlotte just hours after she made her allegations that it was “not hard to find a small handful of people willing to make false smears for personal fame, who knows maybe for financial reasons, political purposes, according to the lawsuit. “Mr. Trump’s false, defamatory statements

honor and dignity,” the lawsuit stated. “Since Mr. Trump has not issued a retraction as I requested, he has therefore left me with no alternative other than to sue him in order to vindicate my reputation,” Zervos said.
Her lawsuit said she was seeking “all possible remedies,” including the apology and retraction, from Trump. Zervos’ attorney, Gloria Allred, a celebrity lawyer who also represents a number of women who have accused comedian Bill Cosby of sexual misconduct, raised the possibility at the news conference that Trump might be required to give a deposition in the case. The lawsuit said Trump kissed Zervos without her consent at his office in New York
in December 2007 and later at a hotel in Beverly Hills, California, kissed her, touched her breast and tried to get her to lie on a bed during a meeting about a possible job. She and the other women came forward after a video from 2005 surfaced showing Trump boasting of making unwanted advances toward women including grabbing women by the genitals — a video that he later apologized for but said was simply “locker room talk” and was not his actual behavior. Protests at Goldman Sachs to oppose Trump Dozens of protesters gathered outside of Goldman Sachs Group Inc headquarters on Tuesday to rally against Presidentelect Donald Trump’s picking several former executives of the Wall Street bank for top jobs in his administration. Some of the 50 or so protesters wore swampmonster masks in reference to Trump’s pledge to “drain the swamp” that he said Washington has become and get rid of special interests. About 20 of them brought sleeping bags, intending to camp outside 200 West Street until Trump’s inauguration on Friday. Goldman Sachs security guards sent employees and guests to entrances on the north side of the building on the rainy evening as protesters unrolled green sleeping bags on the southwest corner. Goldman Sachs had long been viewed as Wall Street’s most prestigious and profitable bank with so many executives leaving for high-profile government positions it earned the nickname “Government Sachs.” But in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Goldman instead found itself blamed by politicians and activists for profiting from the implosion of the mortgage market. In response, the bank embarked on a public relations campaign to clean up its image and launched initiatives to help small businesses, prisoners and female entrepreneurs. Fla. airport shooting suspect inspired by Islamic State Santiago was a private first class in the National Guard who served in Iraq from 2010 to 2011. An Iraq war veteran accused of killing five people at a Florida airport told investigators he was inspired by Islamic State and previously chatted online with Islamist extremists, an FBI agent testified on Tuesday, U.S. media reported. Esteban Santiago, 26, was ordered held in jail until a Jan. 30 arraignment, court records show. At that time he would enter a formal plea to charges that he opened fire in the baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Jan. 6.
“He has admitted to all of the facts with respect to the terrible and tragic events of Jan. 6,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Del Toro said at the federal court hearing in Fort Lauderdale, NBC 6 South Florida television reported. “These were vulnerable victims who he shot down methodically.” Reuters was not immediately able to reach U.S. prosecutors or the Federal Bureau of Investigation to confirm the media reports. Santiago traveled from Alaska to Florida with a handgun and ammunition in his checked luggage, officials said. Upon retrieving his gun case from the luggage carousel, he went to a bathroom to load the weapon and then opened fire on others waiting for their bags, investigators said. FBI special agent Michael Ferlazzo testified Santiago told interrogators he carried out the attack on behalf of Islamic State and that he had been in contact with others on jihadist chat rooms who

were planning attacks. “It was a group of likeminded individuals who were all planning attacks,” Ferlazzo said, according to NBC 6. The FBI has said Santiago previously displayed erratic behavior, entering the FBI office in Anchorage in November and saying his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency. The FBI turned him over to local police, who took him to a medical facility for a mental evaluation, officials said. Police took a handgun from him but returned it last month after a medical evaluation found he was not mentally ill, authorities said. REUTERS

Facebook’s virtual-reality tech was not stolen, Zuckerberg testifies Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the witness stand in Dallas federal court Tuesday and denied an allegation by a rival company that the virtual-reality technology of Facebook’s Oculus unit was stolen. ZeniMax sued Oculus in 2014 as Facebook was in the process of buying the startup for $2 billion. The publisher said Oculus unlawfully gained access to ZeniMax’s intellectual property while developing the virtual-reality system that includes the Rift headset. Zuckerberg told a jury in the crowded courtroom that those claims are false. “Oculus products are based on Oculus technology, he said. Under questioning from ZeniMax lawyer Tony Sammi, the 32-year-old billionaire

“It’s pretty common when you announce a big deal that people just come out of the woodwork and claim they own some part of the deal. Zuckerberg
addressed how Facebook’s investment in virtual reality came together. Zuckerberg said
the purchase of Oculus included not only the $2 billion price but also $700 million to retain employees and $300 million in payouts for reaching milestones. Zuckerberg said the Oculus deal was done over a weekend in 2014, which Sammi said in court does not show due diligence. At the time, Zuckerberg testified, he was not aware of the claims against Oculus. The lawsuit, in the sixth day of a jury trial, relates in part to programmer John Carmack. Well-known for helping to conceive games such as “Quake and “Doom, Carmack worked for ID Software before that company was acquired by ZeniMax. He is now the chief technology officer at Oculus. REUTERS

Lindsay Lohan probably didn’t convert to Islam, OK?

The artist formerly known as LiLo is at it again. Over the weekend, Lindsay Lohan scrubbed her entire Instagram, leaving her 5.7 million followers the words: “alaikum salam,” an Arabic greeting that loosely translates to “peace be unto you.” And if you’re thinking: “What even is happening?!” — you’re not alone. Is this simply a break from social media? A cry for attention? Some thrilling combination of

As always, Lindsay Lohan manages to be a half-frown emoji of mystery. Never change, girl.

The actress got candid with Vogue Australia about how pumped she is for her wedding, saying she’s “never been excited by anything more in [her]

Greta Gerwig is a California girl The “20th Century Woman actress may be a New Yorker, but her heart is on the other coast. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

In “20th Century Women, we see Greta Gerwig as we’ve never seen her before: With red hair — and a lot less giggly and insecure than usual. The acclaimed actress plays Abbey, a young, serious photographer and cancer survivor who lives in a Santa Barbara house in 1979. Her landlord’s (Annette Bening) tenants also include her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zurman), a teenage girl (Elle Fanning) and a 40-something fix-it man (Billy Crudup). The latest from filmmaker Mike Mills (“Beginners), it finds characters trying to eke by and hang out, unaware of the looming
Reagan ’80s. For one thing, making a movie set in 1979 means you get to do a deep dive in the music from that era, which is some of the greatest, coolest music ever recorded. I know music pretty well. There were some deep cuts for me, particularly in the punk scenes, like The Raincoats and The Slits. I had heard of them, but I didn’t know a lot about them. They didn’t feel like they were mine. When I was getting into the character and listening to the music, I really felt like I took ownership of that music that had seemed more oblique to me. Did you have a favorite among the bands you’d never really listened to before? I’m all for The Raincoats. They’re great. is I want to put it in a movie. [Laughs] That’s when I know I love it. In a way, putting a song in a movie is almost forcing people to enjoy it the way you enjoy it — because they’re presumably trapped watching your movie. This is one of many new films that seems relevant after the election. The scene where they watch Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech — it’s as though he was speaking about right now. That speech is

people are buying. And he’s talking about not buying. That’s pretty wild. And nobody heeded his warning at all. [Laughs] They just ran full steam into the ’80s and ’90s, right up to today. We just love buying s—! [Laughs] The feminist literature we hear about in the movie is scarily timely, too. A lot of that stuff felt like it could have been written yesterday. It’s all the exact same problems. It’s not different at all, I’m sorry to report. That was fascinating to put myself in that mind-set, of what it would feel like to encounter these ideas for the very first time.
I love L.A. This presents a really fascinating portrait of California, too. Even though you’re a New Yorker now, you were born and raised there, so it must be particularly resonant. I’m a California girl. My brother’s still there, my sister’s there, most of my family’s there. I’m deeply related to California. It’s so odd because I don’t think anyone associates me with California. I grew up in Sacramento, and Annette grew up in San Diego. We talked a lot about the peculiarities of California that I think are often missed. When people think of California, they think of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The truth is there’s a very deep, very powerful conservative bent that runs through California, in San Diego, in Santa Barbara, in Sacramento. We are the home of Reagan. Joan Didion, when she started, she was conservative, she was a Republican, 100 percent. She thought all that hippie stuff in Haight-Ashbury was ridiculous. That’s the side of California that Annette’s character is in opposition to. It’s something I really understood. I just hadn’t had the pleasure of being in a film about that side of California.

Kings of the road Kings of Leon bring their seventh studio album, “Walls, on tour. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka rachel.raczka@metro.us
Three years after “Mechanical Bull (and it’s charmingly catchy single “Supersoaker), Kings of Leon timidly re-emerged with their seventh studio album, “Walls. This time, the band — known for their high emotions, both in song and amongst themselves (they’re brothers, after all) — worked with Markus Dravs, the UK-based producer known for working his finesse on Florence and the Machine, Arcade Fire, Coldplay and Mumford and Sons. The result is a tight 10-track that dropped in October, trickling out the likes of the unexpected moseyinducing “Muchacho and abstractly Springsteenesque title track, “Walls. “Waste a Moment and “Find Me might incite a toe tap to your dad and his friends, but they play
just fine by us, too. We caught up with Jared Followill — the youngest of the Nashville foursome — from Atlantic City, just before the band hits the road for a U.S. tour and the summer festival circuit. Now that you’re in rehearsals and have played the album live — do you notice any of Markus’ handiwork coming through on stage? Maybe, but not obviously. His influences are greatly shown when we play anything from “Walls,â€? but we don’t lock ourselves into album tours. We see our live show as a growing thing; it’s always been there, we just add to it. Seven albums in — how are you going to narrow it down? It’s tough. I don’t think there’s any way to make everyone happy — including us. One song I’m dying to see live is “Muchacho,â€? just because it’s such a dierent vibe from what we’re used to seeing from you.

Yeah, and I understand why, but I also know there’s no real way for us to answer those questions. None of us have been in other bands. We’ve only been in a band with our family. So when people ask us if we argue more than other bands, it’s like, “We don’t know! That, I can say for a fact, will be there. We’re running through the set now, and “Muchacho is something we’re excited to play. It’s a song that came together late [in the recording process] for us, and there was a weird vision for us. It’s like a super bar-band, karaokestyle song. It’s somewhat challenging, and it’ll be interesting to see how it works out in these arena venues. Given that you guys are

Is there anything U.S. festivals learn from festivals abroad? For the most part, festivals in Europe are rowdier. When you’re on stage, you want to see people having fun and going crazy. Just like when you’re in the audience, you want to see the band give it their all. 28 HOME FIRST HOMES Millennial home buyers avoid debt and prefer to DIY Millennial homeowners — yes, they do exist — are a careful lot, according to Better Homes & Gardens’ ninth annual survey of trends in U.S. homeownership. This year’s focus was on millennial (ages 22-39) homeowners, especially â€œďŹ rstsâ€? living in their ďŹ rst homes. The online survey was conducted Sept. 16-30, 2016 of 605 millennial homeowners.
The American Dream still includes home ownership for 85 percent of millennials (ages 2239), according to the survey, but they’re not necessarily willing to go into major debt to achieve it. Only half are willing to pay what it takes to get their ideal features and quality, and only 36 percent are willing to go into debt to aord it. The other half of ďŹ rst-time millennial home buyers opt for older houses that need some degree of repair or remodeling.

Housing lottery opens in Pacific Park Brooklyn’s new building Take your chance at scoring an affordable home. KIMBERLY AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
A housing lottery in Brooklyn offering low-, moderate- and middleincome New Yorkers the chance to apply for new apartments on NYC Housing Connect is now open. Of the 303 available units in Pacific Park Brooklyn’s new building at 38 Sixth Ave., 198 have been set aside for residents earning between 101 and 165 percent of the area median income, which means families earning up to $173,415 annually will be eligible for below-market housing. For people earning as little as $20,126 per year — between 30 percent and 100 percent of the area median income — 105 units have been set aside, according to Pacific Park Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects, the apartments range from studios to three bedrooms. Each unit features white oak flooring, quartz countertops with ceramic back-
splash, an integrated dishwasher, whirlpool appliances, porcelaintiled bathroom floors and subway bathroom wall tiles, polished chrome fixtures and a Toto toilet. The building, steps away from the transit hub at Atlantic AvenueBarclays Center, will also boast amenities such as a fitness center with a yoga/dance studio and top-of-the-line equipment, residents’ lounge with a catering station, bike storage, a pet grooming station, a children’s play area, as well as a rooftop terrace, underground parking and laundry facilities on every floor. According to Curbed, Pacific Park’s other affordable housing lotteries have been immensely popular. The site states that 461 Dean St. received 84,000 applications, and 535 Carlton Ave. received 95,000 applications. With real estate prices continuing to soar, we’re sure the lottery at 38 Sixth Ave. will generate similar interest. THE GREAT DEBATE Those sports shows where a white guy and a black guy scream at each other while a good-looking brunette female attempts to direct traffic get huuuuge TV ratings for a weekday morning. The noise from ESPN’s “First Take” and FS1’s “The Undisputed” provides great background sound for gym locker rooms and dentist offices, but it’s decidedly unhealthy to, ya know, actually listen to the manufactured things these people are saying. All cynicism and jealousy aside, here’s a fun fact about “First Take.” Wildly popular host Molly Qerim is dating wildly popular “NBA on ESPN” personality and former NBA player Jalen Rose. UNSOLVED MYSTERY Pro wrestling legend Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka died on Sunday and WWE ran a tribute to him Monday. What’s crazy about this wrestling death is that the 73-year-old Snuka had murder charges dropped against him just two weeks ago as he was deemed not competent to stand trial. A longstanding wrestling rumor was
that Snuka murdered his girlfriend in 1983. Snuka’s story was that he found his girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, dead in a hotel room with three dozen cuts and bruises. Officials determined at the time that she was hit consistently with a stationary object before dying. File under unsolved mystery that will never be solved.
Former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho tweeted out during the Patriots-Texans game: “To think, I got traded for #DionLewis back in 2013 … someone needs to be fired for that. He a beast!” Acho is currently unemployed in football and Lewis had three touchdowns against Houston. Former Browns (and Eagles) executive Joe Banner played along, tweeting at Acho, “I traded you for Dion and got fired. Go figure! Hope you are well.” For the record, current Eagles executive Howie Roseman was the one who brought Acho to Philly and shipped Lewis to Cleveland. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

NY’s Carmelo era may be over soon Phil Jackson reportedly asked Carmelo Anthony if he still wanted to be a Knick. TONY WILLIAMS & MATT BURKE sports@metro.us

The Knicks have now lost 11 times in their last 13 games, and with a schedule that still has eight games remaining over the next two weeks, the team can either find a way to rally or further slip into despair.       Hornacek is going to need to find a way to rally from within. And for spurts during Monday’s matinee, it appeared he found the elixir. He started rookie Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Ron Baker instead of Porzingis and Courtney Lee — and both responded nicely.

Islanders fire head coach Jack Capuano The Islanders are dead last in the Eastern Conference in points and have looked lifeless since Election Day. Now is as good a time as any to make drastic changes, and the franchise will start to try and return to winning ways first by moving on from head coach Jack Capuano, who was fired Tuesday. “The New York Islanders would like to thank Jack for his tireless work throughout his seven season with the organization as head coach, Islanders GM Garth Snow said in a statement. “His leader-
ship guided the team to the playoffs in three of the past four years, which included two straight 100-point seasons. He is a great coach and an even better person. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward. According to ESPN’s Scott Burnside, Capuano will be replaced on an interim basis by assistant GM Doug Weight, who has served as an assistant coach for the team. The Isles next play on Thursday, at home against the Dallas Stars. EVAN MACY

metro.us/horoscopes Aries Don’t take action based on assumptions. Learn from your experience and take a disciplined approach in order to make things unfold to your advantage.
Libra Stay calm, and refrain from making assumptions or impulsive moves based on information that isn’t conclusive. Listen carefully and respond with diplomacy.
Taurus Focus more on what you can do for others without compromising your personal or professional position. Putting in extra hours will lead to unexpected benefits.
Scorpio Avoid anyone trying to use guilt or emotional manipulation to sway you. Stay focused on what’s important to you and strive for perfection, satisfaction and success.
Gemini When opportunity knocks, you have to be ready to size up what’s being offered and make your move. Don’t trust anyone but yourself when it comes to fact-finding.
Sagittarius You’ll face confusion and uncertainty. Don’t be fooled by someone trying to persuade you to do something that isn’t healthy.
Cancer When in doubt, take a breather and let the chaos or confusion subside. Pour your attention into self-improvements that will raise your qualifications or skills.
Capricorn Doing too much too fast will jeopardize your chance to improve your life financially, emotionally and physically. Be a leader, not a follower.
Leo Don’t wait for change to happen when you can be the one to initiate what you want to see unfold. Do your part and show your leadership ability.
Aquarius Make personal changes that will lower your overhead and improve your life. Having more money to pursue what you enjoy doing will brighten the picture.
Virgo Refrain from any inclination you have to take on too much or to overspend. Moderation, hard work and determination will be rewarding. Romance is on the rise.
Pisces Getting angry will not solve your problem, but taking positive action will. Use your intelligence to make a plan that will encourage everyone to pitch in. EUGENIA LAST

Our windows are tested to withstand some pretty crazy weather. 120 mph whipping winds…
-20° Arctic temperatures…
• We build replacement windows that will last* because we test them to withstand some very extreme weather conditions...minus 20°F, 120 mph winds and 8 inches of rain per hour!** and 8” of soaking rain an hour
• Because our window’s Fibrex® material is twice as strong as vinyl, our window will help make your home more comfortable. • Our teams of installers are exceptionally trained, tested, and skilled. This is why most installations—including a top-to-bottom cleanup of the work area—are completed in just one day.
