PROTEST GROUP VOWS TO NETFLIX BLOWS PAST DISRUPT INAUGURATION SUBSCRIBER ESTIMATES

1

Leaders of an ad hoc group of protesters enraged by Republican Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States vowed to disrupt his inauguration this week by blocking public access to the event. The DisruptJ20 protest group said it will send groups of demonstrators to the dozen entrances to the grassy National Mall where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather to watch Trump, who

has never before held public office, be sworn in as president on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Friday. “We believe that it’s our role and the role of any people with conscience to try to disrupt this inauguration and have a massive showing of resistance on that day,” Samantha Miller, a DisruptJ20 organizer, said. Netflix Inc.’s international and U.S. subscriber additions blew past analysts’ estimates as the video streaming service released shows including the award-winning British drama “The Crown” and a revival of “Gilmore Girls.” Netflix, whose shares rose 7.1 percent in extended trading, has been hugely successful in attracting more subscribers through the popularity of its original shows

such as “Narcos” and “Stranger Things.” The company said on Wednesday it signed up 5.12 million subscribers outside the United States in the quarter ended Dec. 31. Analysts on average had estimated 3.73 million additions, according to research firm FactSet StreetAccount. Faced with slowing growth in the United States, Netflix has launched in almost every country. REUTERS

OBAMA’S FAREWELL

Obama leaves office pledging to defend nation’s ‘core values’ The president used his final White House news conference to defend a host of recent decisions. METRO STAFF & REUTERS @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

President Barack Obama touched upon a range of topics, from sanctions against Russia to his decision to commute the sentence of convicted leaker Chelsea Manning, during his final White House news conference Wednesday. However, he used the occasion to stress that he leaves office committed to speaking out whenever he determines the nation’s “core values” are in jeopardy. Obama noted that he

expects a new president and a Republican Congress to set their own course and pursue an agenda that will clash with his political outlook. “There’s a difference between that normal functioning of politics and certain issues or certain moments where I think our core values may be at stake,” he said. “I put in that category if I saw systematic discrimination being ratified in some fashion. I put in that category explicit or functional obstacles to people being able to vote, to exercise their franchise. I put in that category institutional efforts to silence dissent or the press. And for me at least, I would put in that category efforts to round up kids who have grown up here and for all practical purposes are American kids and send them

somewhere else, when they love this country.” He urged Presidentelect Donald Trump to keep separate the issue of economic sanctions on Russia from the pursuit of talks to reduce nuclear stockpiles. Trump, who takes office on Friday, said in an interview with the Times

of London published on Monday that he would propose offering to end sanctions on Moscow in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal. Obama’s administration imposed the sanctions in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine.

“Russia continues to occupy Ukrainian territory and meddle in Ukrainian affairs,” Obama said. “I think it would probably best serve, not only American interests, but also the interests of preserving international norms if we made sure that we don’t confuse why these sanctions have been im-

posed with a whole set of other issues.” Obama defended his decision to commute the 35-year sentence of former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to the roughly seven years she has served. “Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence,” Obama said.

Barack Obama’s presidency is undeniably historic — he’s secured his spot in the history books as the first African-American to hold the office. But what else will he be remembered for? Obama’s list of accomplishments over his two terms include the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage, the nuclear agreement with Iran, an international climate-change agreement and an auto-industry bailout that helped propel the U.S. out of the 2008 Great Recession. But experts say Obama’s most-remembered achievement is be the passage of the Affordable Care Act — dubbed by opponents derisively as Obamacare, a term reappropriated by the president himself — the signature health-care legislation that eliminated preexisting-conditions clauses and mandated coverage for birth control and yearly physicals in insurance policies, among other things, even as Republicans attempt to dismantle it. “The fact that he put health care on the table as a conversation, the fact that [the ACA] exists, means that people have now begun to think about the right to health care, said Karen M. Turner, a journalism professor at Temple University. “Presidents in the past have tried to do that, but never got as far as Obama, to actually implement a health-care program, she said. “Now that we have it, even if it is going to be changed, the fact is, there is something. However, the future of the ACA and other Obama initiatives is still uncertain, so we don’t really know in what light he’ll be remembered 20 or 50 years from now, said Chris Capozzola,

a history professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “How he’s remembered depends on what happens next, he said. “Presidents leave office with one reputation, and that reputation can change over time. John F. Kennedy was remembered fondly at first, partly because he was assassinated, Capozzola said. But with the passage of time, historians have been more critical of his presidency. On the other hand, Harry S. Truman was seen as a “complete failure when he left office in 1954, in part because of how divided the country was at that time. Generations later, people began to appreciate Truman’s role in the Cold War. Still, Capozzola said he agrees that the health-care

legislation has cemented Obama’s legacy. “The Affordable Care Act will be harder to dismantle than its opponents think, he said. “History shows that entitlement programs are generally popular with the American public. The partisan opposition Obama weathered will also color his legacy, Turner said. She noted that historians will have to contextualize how Obama “ran into public barriers with Republicans who said bluntly they were not willing to work with him as president.

OBAMA’S FAREWELL

METRO.US THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 2017

Race relations unchanged during Obama presidency “America has always been racially polarizing,” says a professor of race relations. ALEXI FRIEDMAN @MetroNewYork

alexi.friedman@metro.us

Chad Dion Lassiter is a professor of American race relations at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, and president of Black Men at Penn School of Social Work Inc. He spoke with Metro on Martin Luther King Jr. Day about the polarized state of race relations in the United States as the nation’s first black president leaves office. Here are excerpts from the conversation, which have been edited and condensed.

Looking back after eight years, what did Barack Obama’s presidency do for race relations in America? The election of Barack Obama brought the color line closer together. I don’t think we’re postracial. Post-racial is still a mirage. It was crafted by the elites to say systemic institutional racism and all the things that are a threat to our democracy no longer exist, that we’ve transformed the color line with the ascension of Barack Obama. When he got in there though, a lot of the power elite awakened to the real realization that here is a black man at the highest office in the land. So the obstruction politics were similar to what Congressman John Lewis said, that never in the history of the democracy

have you had a standing president give a State of the Union address and someone belts out, “You lie!” Philosophically not just politically, Barack Obama and Donald Trump seem to be complete opposites. How do you explain the American people going from one to another? When we look at where we are now, this is not all on Donald Trump’s shoulder. A lot of this was planted with the Tea Party. The rhetoric from the right as it relates to xenophobia, as it relates to Islamophobia. As it relates to, “Let’s build that wall.” So Donald Trump comes in and he’s able to say what a lot of people are thinking but don’t have the audacity to say.

What would you want to see Obama do after leaving oďŹƒce to improve race relations in the United States? I always said that once president Obama got out of the Oval Office, we

were going to see a world leader who has the ability and God-given gift to unite the globe. Obama has the ability to write books and we can hear how he really feels without the confines of empire. I think he has the opportunity to give workshops and trainings about the racial divide. He has the ability to deal with value clarifications to navigate the color line where we can all look at each other and see the humanity for who we are.

Has the state of race relations improved in the last eight years, and where do you see it heading under President Trump? I think where we’re at in the country as it relates to race relations is the same place we were at when Obama was elected president. America has always been racially polarizing. A lot of things have been swept under the rug. On this King Day, we still should be looking at the same thing

Bella Hadid: Queen of subtle shade Bella Hadid, a 20-yearold, is apparently very upset that her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd has moved on so quickly. And she is not being subtle or quiet about it. I’m imagining it went something like this: Bella saw those pictures of The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) and Selena Gomez making out post-dinner in Santa Monica. She felt something — a stirring in her bones. And she knew what to do: unfollow Selena on Instagram. So she did just that. But that wasn’t enough — no, no: She had to do some-

thing more — but not, like, too much. So she posted a paparazzi shot of her flipping off the camera. That’ll do it … But wait, no. A “source” leaked a “quote” about how she’s feeling. According to Perez Hilton, the mystery “source” said: “Bella and Abel’s split wasn’t dramatic, but of course she’s hurt and pissed that he’s moved on so quickly with Selena.” Girl, I get it. But the best way to get back at people is to live your life and shove your personal success in their face, so maybe do more of that

and do less of having your publicist leak quotes about how mad you are. Don’t get mad, Bella. Get even.

Perez Hilton notes that this beef has been a longstanding one, although it’s mostly been one-sided: One time, Rihanna retorted

But now, Sheen is ready to squash the beef, going as far as to post an apology on his Instagram, offering to buy the multiplatinum Grammy winner a drink sometime. audience members and participants — much to the surprise of Gurung. (“We were expecting about 40 people.”) While the second iteration remains 21-plus, the group is seeking additional venues for the family-friendly crowd. But how does it work? Attendees access a Google doc via the Facebook event

Once at the event, when your tune comes up — you’re on. “The events are very raucous — everyone is 100-percent invested and there’re lots of enthusiastic people who take the stage,” Gurung adds. “But the whole venue sings along and it gets pretty high-energy.” Gurung also notes that the Inauguration Day timing is just a coincidence (“largely a result of logistics and what days the venue was available to us”) but the organizers aren’t shying away from the positive opportunities the production could provide to the community it serves. sical that seem like very apt responses to events in the previous and upcoming years. Ultimately, I think there will be some kind of catharsis for a lot of us, or as much as you can get out of a night of singing, anyway.” Entry to Hamiltunes (whether you sing or not) is free, but the group is encouraging guests to donate at the door for Planned Parenthood and the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights. “We’re just doing this for fun and a way for fans in the area to come together,” Gurung says. “But we are taking this opportunity to raise funds for causes that we think are most vulnerable in this political climate.”

Billy Wilder’s eerie 1950 film noir, starring Gloria Swanson as a delusional, washed-up silent-film starlet who draws a frustrated young screenwriter into her macabre world, seems like even more of a cautionary tale today, as our obsession with celebrity keeps growing. Then again, these days, maybe Norma Desmond could have had a late-career turn as a reality TV star—perish the thought! Fenway’s living Pinterest board of a restaurant, Tiger Mama, has lived up to its potential of being the neighborhood hot spot of innovative Asian small plates and trendy interpretations of classic Tiki cocktails. But while the always-charismatic owner Tiffani Faison (of “Top Chef” fame) often takes the spotlight, chef de cuisine Matt Hummel is also to be praised for the restaurant’s consistently packed banquettes. Needless to say: He’s got great taste. The 35-year-old Ithaca, New York, native shares his favorite spots in

town to grab a post-shift meal and introduces us to his very personal hangout: Cafe Sadness.

Best late-night meal? Anchovies in the South End. After a long day, fried raviolis and a High Life really hit the spot. 433 Columbus Ave., anchoviesboston.com

Best meal under $5? Tedeschi’s buffalochicken-salad sandwich with Cool Ranch Doritos. If you’re daring, you can put the Doritos in the sandwich for textural reasons. I finish it off with a Nestle Chipwich. Best consumed in bed, or as I call it: Cafe Sadness. There’s always a table for one. tedeschifoodshops.com

Best hidden foodie gem? Is Cafe Sushi really hidden anymore? Creative and fresh sushi in an unsuspecting spot between Harvard and Central. Whether it’s an omikasse menu or just

a few maki, it never disappoints. 1105 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, cafesushicambridge.com

Best place to dine alone? Bar Mezzana with a friend or by yourself this restaurant in the Ink Block is one of the best meals I had this year. The pastas are deceivingly simple but brilliant. Have one at the bar but don’t skip on their crudos. 360 Harrison Ave., barmezzana.com

Place you recommend for out-oftowners? Row 34. In my opinion, one of the best beer and wine lists in the city. Go for that and the fish charcuterie board alone. 383 Congress St., row34.com

Go-to date spot? I’ve lived here for over six years and have taken every girlfriend I’ve had here. Always fantastic. Love may come and go, but Oleana’s consistently delicious meals certainly don’t. 134 Hampshire St., Cambridge, oleanarestaurant.com

Reel-life tragedy “Tower takes a surreal, sad look at the University of Texas massacre. SEAN BURNS @SeanMBurns letters@metro.us

Combining traditional documentary tropes with experimental animation techniques, director Keith Maitland’s “Tower is like nothing you’ve seen before. An oral history as a visual poem, the movie expands and collapses time to place the viewer alongside the victims of sniper Charles Whitman’s massacre from the University of Texas Tower on that hot August morning in 1966. Opening at the Brattle Theatre this week after winning the Boston Soci-

ety of Film Critics’ 2016 award for Best Animated Film, “Tower might in lesser hands have quite easily drifted into artschool pretentiousness or queasy exploitation. But Maitland honors the stories of these survivors, resulting in one of the most emotional experiences you’ll have at the movies this year. The Mamas and the Papas’ “Monday Monday lulls us into the hazy normalcy of a bustling campus just moments before it’s shattered forever by violence. Maitland has cast young actors to read from his interviews with the victims, and reenactments are rendered with the quivering rotoscope animation that his fellow Austin filmmaker Rich-

ard Linklater used for “Waking Life and “A Scanner Darkly. Once the shooting starts, editor Austin Reedy begins layering in blackand-white archival footage, along with snippets from radio and television broadcasts. What could have been a jumble of mismatched formats attains a remarkable fluidity, reminiscent of the propulsive collages from Oliver Stone’s “JFK-era. “Tower foregrounds the testimony of Claire Wilson James (“played

in the voice-overs and animated sequences by actress Violett Beane) who lost her boyfriend and unborn child in the massacre. The first to be shot from the tower, she laid bleeding and exposed on the UT Mall’s scorching cement for the rest of Whitman’s 96-minute siege. In a moment of incredible compassion, a young woman named Rita Starpattern risked her life running into the line of fire just to lie by James’ side and comfort her until the shooting

stopped. There are lots of amazing little moments like that in “Tower, with regular folks rising to the occasion and surprising even themselves with unexpected valor. (This film’s commitment to everyday heroes provides a welcome bit of counterprogramming to the noxious preening of Mark Wahlberg’s fictional supercop in the odious “Patriots Day.) Whitman is pointedly never shown and his name is mentioned only once in pass-

ing. This is a movie about the innocents. Maitland uses the animation to expressionistically convey their stunned perspectives, whether dropping out backgrounds to leave leaving bodies floating in empty space, or splashing white silhouettes on a blood-red screen. “Tower attains the woozy, time-standingstill sensation of trauma as it happens, capturing the shock and horror of a tragic situation that these days occurs with depressing regularity. Beyond Amsterdam There’s charm, history and hidden vacation spots outside the Netherlands capital.

Gouda Known for its eponymous and world-famous cheese, Gouda (pronounced “HOW-duh”) is a lively market town in South Holland that rewards gourmands and history buffs alike. Stop by t’Kaaswinkeltje to pick up one of the many varieties of Gouda, explore the city’s 15th-century architecture, and check out Gouda pottery, a style native to the city known for its Art Deco aesthetic.

Pyramid of Austerlitz Just outside Utrecht is

one of the more bizarre and fascinating relics from the Napoleonic Era in the Netherlands. Gen. Auguste de Marmont, a close confidant of Napoleon, was stationed in the area in 1804 and commissioned his troops to construct a pyramid as a way to pass the time while they waited for a British invasion. The 120-foot earthen structure was finished in a remarkable 27 days and later.

Bloemendaal beach Even in the summer, a dip in the North Sea is not for the faint-hearted, but the Dutch coast is a surprisingly charming place. Bloemendaal Beach is easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam, and is a favorite hangout among locals. The waterfront is lined with restaurants and bars open well into the night.

Haarlem This postcard-perfect city is just 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam, but the change of pace is instantly noticeable. Known as one of the best places in the Netherlands to shop, Haarlem is replete with interesting boutiques and welcoming cafés that line the still largely touristfree alleyways and quiet canals.

Kinderdijk Few things symbolize the Netherlands quite like the windmill, a necessary

innovation in a country where 25 percent of its land sits below sea level. The 19 windmills in Kinderdijk date to the 18th century and are still used today to pump water out of the polder, an area of low-lying reclaimed land.

Keukenhof Gardens For two months every spring, Keukenhof Gardens explodes with the blooms of more than 7 million flowers, most notably the famous Dutch tulips. Tulip mania began in the Netherlands in the 17th century, when the

colorful flowers became much-sought-after status symbols, and the country is still known for its horticulture. The 2017 season runs from March 23 to May 21, with the best viewing in mid-April.

The quiet streets, medieval architecture and verdant canals epitomize the charm of the Netherlands’ small cities, but Delft stands apart. Johannes Vermeer depicted his hometown and its residents in many of his paintings. Delft is also known for its ornate blue pottery.

FAMILY FEUD

BIG GAME FOR BRADY FS1’s Colin Cowherd was verbally tarred and feathered by Patriots fans this week after asking the question, “Is Tom Brady playing for his job this weekend?” On the surface, it’s an obscene question because even the most ardent Brady-bashers are finally coming around on the fact that he’s the greatest QB of all-time. I mean, why would you trade the G.O.A.T.? Buuuuut (there’s always a but), Brady will be 40 years old at the start of next season and Bill Belichick is the most ruthless talent evaluator of all

time. If Brady struggles against the Steelers and loses, it would be the second straight year in which he’s performed below-average in an AFC title game. Belichick takes notes on that sort of stuff, so in a roundabout way, Cowherd’s question is close to legit. No one ever thought Joe Montana would play for the Chiefs … this sort of stuff is not unprecedented.

legit starting quarterback. And they now have a head coach who allegedly used to like to climb into bed with unsuspecting athletic trainers at the University of Colorado in the early 2000s and rub his penis against them. New Denver head coach Vance Joseph was never charged with sexual assault but there’s plenty of material in a 2004 police report to lead you to believe he’s a world-class creep. “He’s just a sleaze ball,” one of the alleged women said in the report, unearthed by The Daily Camera.

If Aaron Rodgers and the Packers make it to this year’s Super Bowl, don’t expect any mushy “Thanks mom!” and “Thanks dad!” TV features leading up to the game. Apparently Rodgers isn’t on speaking terms with anyone in his immediate family. According to a Bleacher Report article last fall, Rodgers has mailed back Christmas gifts from his mom and dad and didn’t even attend his grandfather’s funeral

(the same grandfather he used to call before every game). A source close to Aaron’s brother Jordan (who appeared on “The Bachelorette”), told People magazine recently that there was a “blow-up” between the two brothers at some point and that some things were said that were “regrettable.” In Donald Trumplike fashion, the Falcons should fly Rodgers’ family in for this Sunday’s NFC title game.

NO DEFENSE LEFT CAN CONTAIN BRADY OPINION

DANNY PICARD

@dannypicard

It’s a quarterback league. You can only get so far without one. Which is why conference championship weekend looks the way it does. The New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, and Green Bay Packers all have something in common: an elite QB under center. Matt Ryan is the only quarterback still standing that hasn’t won a Super Bowl. Tom Brady is looking for his fifth Super Bowl ring, while Ben Roethlisberger is looking for his third, and Aaron Rodgers is looking for his second. The Patriots are currently the favorite to win Super Bowl LI. And Brady is the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP. It seems as though Las Vegas feels the same way I do. There isn’t a defense left in the tournament that can stop the Patriots’ offense. Give the Houston Texans credit. They were able to make Brady uncomfortable in last weekend’s Divisional game at Gillette Stadium, and force him to make some bad throws. Statistically, there isn’t a potential opposing defense left in the tournament that’s as good as Houston’s. And if Brady can put up 34 points against that type of pass rush in a game where the Patriots’ offense didn’t look good at all, what will he do to Pittsburgh’s defense on Sunday at Gillette? Or even better, what will he do against those brutal defenses still playing in the NFC, if the Pats are able to get by the Steelers? This isn’t me being a Patriots cheerleader. As a football fan who’s being realistic about the four teams that are left standing, which one of the other three teams has a defense that can slow down Brady, if one of the best defenses in the league couldn’t prevent

him from putting up a 30spot, even while making him throw a few picks? The blueprint for giving Brady fits is there. You have to get to him. But will the Steelers be able to do that? Home-field advantage will be huge for New England on Sunday against Pittsburgh. Earlier this season, in Pittsburgh, Brady threw for 222 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He wasn’t sacked a single time. The Patriots won that game in late October, 27-16. And I know, Roethlisberger didn’t play because he was injured. But last time I checked, Big Ben doesn’t play defense. Now, nearly three months later, Roethlisberger still won’t be playing defense, and the Patriots will be hosting the AFC Championship. And I expect Brady’s numbers against this Steelers defense to be better in his own building than they were in a Week 7 win. If that turns out to be the case, then it will set the Patriots up for a Super Bowl against either Atlanta or Green Bay. I don’t know if you’ve watched either of these two defenses extensively this season. But I have. And in a neutral site, I don’t see a scenario in

which Brady doesn’t go off against either the Falcons or Packers. Statistically, Atlanta and Green Bay have two of the worst defenses in football. The Falcons’ pass defense ranks 28th in the NFL, allowing 267 yards in the air per game. The Packers’ pass defense ranks second-tolast in the NFL, allowing 269 yards in the air per game. If you’re using the eye test, you’ll probably see that the stats don’t lie. Brady shouldn’t have an issue with either defense in a potential Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ defense ranks No. 1 in the NFL, allowing the least amount of points per game. So, ya, while it’s a quarterback league, it helps to be able to play defense as well. Most importantly, it helps to have the best quarterback. That’s what the Patriots have. That’s what Brady is. And there’s no defense still standing that’s good enough to stop him from hoisting that Lombardi Trophy once again. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com, iTunes, and Google Play. Aries It will be difficult to contain your feelings or keep your plans under wraps. Put your energy into education and pursuing a promising partnership.

Libra Don’t act on impulse or emotion. Focus on making personal improvements and nurturing relationships that are important to you. Compromise will help ease any dispute.

Taurus Don’t let an unexpected turn of events cause you to question what you are doing. Live up to your promises, trust in your plan and see it through to the end.

Scorpio Don’t jump or make an impulsive move just because someone else does. Trust in yourself to achieve whatever you set your mind to with finesse and punctuality.

Gemini You’ll be taken advantage of if you give your time, money and services to people who want to reap rewards without doing the work. Make sure you are compensated.

Sagittarius Emotional spending will be your downfall. You cannot buy love or happiness. Stay focused on what’s best for you, not on what others want you to do.

Cancer Put more emphasis on formulating plans that will help you stand out from the competition. A creative approach to your work and personal finances will pay off.

Capricorn You’ll take two steps forward and three steps back if you act prematurely. Question everything and everyone to avoid stepping into an abyss.

Leo You’ll end the day on an emotional note if you aren’t bold enough to stand up for your rights and the rights of those you care about. Do your part and avoid regret.

Aquarius Line up all the things you want to do and get moving. An opportunity to bring about a positive change will lead to perks as well as additional income.

Virgo Be open about the way you feel and receptive toward those willing to share. Partnerships will lead to opportunities that allow you to take on more responsibilities.

Pisces Use your insight to determine what part you can play in the changes that are unfolding around you. A subtle response will enhance your reputation. EUGENIA LAST
