Once again, the Patriots are favored to make it to the Super Bowl. Will they seal the deal this time?
Things to watch for as Patriots face Steelers in AFC title game
A trip to Super Bowl LI in Houston is on the line this Sunday at Gillette. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
When you look at the right way a football team should be built and the right way an organization should be run, it’s no surprise to see the Patriots and Steelers facing off in the AFC Championship game this Sunday (6:40 p.m., CBS). While these two teams haven’t played each other in the playoffs since the 2004 AFC title game, both teams remain two of the most consistent units in the NFL. Since 1994: The Patriots are first in wins (281), and the Steelers third (252); the Patriots are first in Super Bowl championships (4), while the Steelers are tied for third (2); the Patriots are first in conference championships (7) while the Steelers are tied for second (4); and the Patriots are first in playoff victories (26),
with the Steelers tied for second (20). On Sunday, they’ll meet with a trip to Super Bowl LI on the line.
1Steeling points
Antonio Brown was in the news for all the wrong reasons this week after live-broadcasting coach Mike Tomlin’s postgame locker room speech, in which Tomlin referred to the Patriots as a--holes. Dumb move on Brown’s part? Yes. Will it have any effect on Sunday’s game? Not at all. But Brown himself most certainly will. Earlier this season against the Patriots, Brown caught seven of 11 targets for 106 yards, including a 51-yarder. The season prior against the Patriots, he caught nine of 11 targets for 133 yards and a touchdown, though that touchdown came in the final seconds of a game that the Pats had in the bag. The numbers may not dictate it, but Malcolm Butler has definitely held his own against Brown, and if he

can do that again, Ben Roethlisberger will have to get really creative … or lean even heavier on running back Le’Veon Bell. That isn’t such a bad thing. Bell has been a monster the second half of the season, rushing for over 100 yards in seven of his last eight games, including 170 and 167, respectively, in two playoff games. The Patriots’ thirdranked rush defense has never been more tested.
hands 2Two for safety
The Patriots pride themselves in playing a tight game in all three phases.
One thing you can usually count on is the team finishing near the top of the league in turnover differential. That was again the case this season, as they finished plus-12, third best in the NFL. Of course, a huge reason for that is the fact that they only threw two interceptions all season. Add in nine fumbles and the 11 total turnovers were tied for the fewest all season by any team. But that doesn’t mean they’ve protected the ball all that well. New England actually fumbled the ball 27 times this year, tied for the second-most in the NFL. It’s also tied for the second-most under Bill Belichick, and you have to go back to 2001 to find a Patriots team that fumbled more (29). Tom Brady threw two interceptions and Dion Lewis fumbled twice against the Texans last weekend (yes, Lewis also scored three touchdowns). One of Lewis’ fumbles gave the Texans a short field for a touchdown. The Patriots
can’t afford to put the ball on the ground and risk a turnover against a Pittsburgh team extremely capable of making them pay.
Ben Roethlisberger
of 3Best the best? Take a look at the four quarterbacks remaining in the playoffs: Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan, and Aaron Rodgers. Not coincidentally, they are four of the best quarterbacks in the league. Yes, football is a team sport, but almost all of the time it’s going to come down to quarterback play. There are some out there who think the Patriots have the worst offense remaining of the four teams. That can be argued. But nobody behind the walls of Gillette Stadium would take any of the other options at QB, despite how good they may be. “With a guy who’s been there, done that, experienced about every situation you can experience and he’s had a great deal of success in doing so, just having him out there gives everybody on the field a great deal of confidence,” Pats captain Matt Slater said of Brady.

Massive crowd expected for Women’s March on Washington Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Scarlett Johansson are among those slated to speak at the post-inauguration protest. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the United States, an estimated 200,000 women and men are expected to march in Washington to demand that elected leaders “act to protect the rights of women, their families and their communities.” The idea for the Women’s March on Washington started when a grandmother in Hawaii suggested to her friends that they should travel to the capital as a Million Women’s March, according to the organization’s website. About 40 immediately responded that they would be willing to join her. The movement blossomed with a Facebook post that went viral following Trump’s victory. Since then, the march has

grown to encompass human rights issues beyond women’s issues, including immigration and the treatment of Muslims and the LGBT community. Organizers have announced a roster of speakers at the event. Among them are activists Gloria Steinem and Angela Davis, actresses Scarlett Johansson and Ashley Judd, and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards. Some of those plan-
ning to attend are seasoned veterans of political activism and protest. For others, participating in the march will be a new experience. Shawna Wright of Beverly, Massachusetts, had planned to attend the inauguration — of Hillary Clinton. That didn’t work out. The march offers a post-election way to show the incoming Trump administration that there still is a large, vocal oppo-

sition, she said. “I think we feel in the wake of this election like, ‘Oh my God, how did we miss this, maybe we are in the minority, maybe we are grossly outnumbered,’
What do you hope this march will convey to President Trump? “I hope that it tells the whole Republican party that we’re not going to give up on Planned Parenthood. We’re not going to give up on the Affordable Care Act and having access to quality health care. We’re not going to give up on a quality education for everyone.”

“I will be there for the inauguration. I am a Republican, I voted for Donald Trump and I was a Trump alternate delegate. Our presidentelect hasn’t even taken office yet, nothing has happened, so I’m not really sure what we are marching about at this point.”
“I feel that Donald Trump is inadequate to be president of the United States and in particular, I am appalled by his statements concerning women. His denigration of women and his wanting to do away with Roe v. Wade which many of us fought for for decades.”
Marian Knapp, 78
Adam Groff, 46
“I think it needs to be made clear that the agenda of the incoming administration is at odds with a really large swath of the American public and a good way to make that apparent is by getting people in the street to show that.”
and I don’t think we are,” Wright said. Marni Halasa, a professional figure skater in New York City, has joined the post-election demonstrations outside Trump
Tower in Manhattan. She has donned an elaborate leopard outfit for those protests which she says is intended to remind people about Trump’s coarse comments about women. “I’m marching for power to be returned to ordinary citizens and mass movements like this can change policies,” Halasa said of her participation in the Washington march. Halasa added that the march also provides an opportunity to share ideas. “Protest is very transformative,” she said. “When you come together and talk and learn more about the issues, you become inspired and take a little of that with you wherever you go. The fight continues.” Alexandra Sherer, 21, an NYU student and a Republican state committeewoman, said she feels the march is “a waste of time.” She voted for Trump, although she was troubled by the “Access Hollywood” outtake video of Trump bragging to Billy Bush about groping women. Metro staff writer Kristin Toussaint contributed to this report.
SIGNAGE A sign of the times: Preparing to protest Ahead of the Women’s March, poster-making events were held across New York City for marchers to visually prepare for the event in Washington. Hazel Morley, 30, hosted a small gathering at her Ridgewood, Queens, apartment last Sunday. With the scent of magic marker and Aperol Spritzes in the air, Morley, who works as a men’s clothing designer, said making her grievances heard through art was a natural impulse. “Being a designer, you ask yourself how you can get involved and how you can make change,” Morley said. “So I figured why not put my skills to use.” Posters created over the afternoon included slogans that read “Grab This Pussy” — accompanied by an image of
glittery female anatomy — and “My Body My Rights.” Morley said she is planning to drive to D.C. early Saturday morning with seven friends in a rented van so that she can personally advocate for a woman’s right to choose and for paid family leave. “It seems like that should be a bipartisan support area.” She said. “I think it’s really important for us to be marching on the doorstep of the White House to show that we’re here and we’re 51 percent of population. Now that the election is over, I think it’s more about sending the message on what policies you want supported. “It’s more productive. And I think almost, deep down, because Trump is from New York, that he’s more progressive than a typical Republican.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Capital mobilizes for inauguration, protests Thousands of security personnel prepare to keep Trump supporters and protesters separated. Washington turned into a virtual fortress on Thursday ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, with police ready to step in to separate protesters from Trump supporters at any sign of unrest. Some 900,000 people, both Trump backers and opponents, are expected to flood the nation’s capital for Friday’s inauguration ceremony, according to organizers’ estimates. Events include the swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol and a parade to the White House along streets thronged with spectators. The number of planned protests and rallies this year is far above what has been typical at recent presidential inaugurations, with some 30 permits granted in Washington for anti-Trump rallies and sympathy protests planned in cities from Boston to Los Angeles, and abroad in cities including London and Sydney. The night before the inauguration, hundreds of people turned out in New York for a protest at the Trump International Hotel and Tower, a few

New president is ready for Day 1 Donald Trump is ready to begin taking executive actions, moving quickly to crack down on immigration, build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and roll back policies of President Barack Obama. President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Washington on Thursday with his family to kick of a weekend of festivities and spoke to a gathering of members of his incoming administration. After being sworn in during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, Trump is poised to wield one of the most powerful tools of his office, the presidential pen, for executive actions that can be implemented without the input of Congress. “He’s committed to not just Day 1, but Day 2, Day 3 of enacting an agenda of real change, and I think that you’re going to see that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said. Dan Savage wants you to get real. If you’re feeling dissatisfied with your sex life or your relationship, the author, advocate, and sex advice columnist suggests you start with some housecleaning, quit fantasizing and figure out just what it is you’re looking for. Savage — who also helped to found the influential It Gets Better Project, aimed at helping prevent suicide among LGBT youth — will be bringing a live version of the “Savage Love podcast he hosts to Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on Jan. 25, joined by San Francisco’s sex-positive comedy musician Rachel Lark. We spoke to Savage to get his thoughts on the state of sex and love in 2017. How do you think dating apps like Tinder have reshaped modern dating and relationships? They call it “The Paradox of Choice, when you go into the supermarket and there’s too many brands of mustard, and you just look at all of them and leave without buying any
mustard, because you can’t decide which you want. Some people have that problem now with dating. There’s just too much opportunity. For some people, that’s paralyzing. And it shouldn’t be. Not everybody on Tinder wants to [bed] you. The magical thinking that people engage in is, “Oh my God, I have so many choices. A trait of truly successful people, romantically, is realistic expectations. A lot of people have unrealistic expectations. And rather than adjust their expectations, or examine them to see if they’re rational, they end the relation— Dan Savage ship and head back out there to try and find the perfect partner, the perfect relationship — the one. And I have been railing against that concept for decades. There is no “one. There is maybe a .67 that you can round up to one.

his audiences. I crank people up to love and accept themselves and be realistic about relationships and enjoy their sex lives, and I think that’s a little different than cranking up people to hate and despise their fellow Americans. The style of hyperbolic overstatement in the service of improving people’s sex lives, I think, is a positive. That style and service of xenophobia and racism, I think, is different and toxic. I’ve heard this from some people, “How is what you do different from what Trump does? Look at the ends. You can pick up a hammer and build something useful, or you can pick up a hammer and beat somebody to death. You don’t then look at the hammer and blame it. Did “golden showers

strike you as a plausible kink for Trump? It did strike me as a plausible kink. Some people are saying, “He’s a germaphobe — therefore, he would never. But the reality is people often, in the sexual realm, want to transgress against their public persona — against the person they know themselves to be. They want to be the opposite. It’s just like the cliche of the high-powered CEO who pays a dominatrix to force him to grovel and beg, and takes all his power away. Or the righteous feminist woman who, in the sack with her boyfriend and consensually, wants to be called a “slut and have her hair pulled. These are all cliches. So the fact that Trump is a “germaphobe, as he cited in his press conference, as proof that he could never possibly be into this, is actually not terribly convincing, if you’re me.

D.R.A.M. is a big baby with a cute dog, and he loves it front of you. And maybe even the idea of passing it forward. I was always friendly and considerate, which made me more memorable.
FAYE WEBSTER
You can call him D.R.A.M., you can call him the name of his debut album “Big Baby D.R.A.M. or you can call him by his birth name, Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith. But what you should never call the Virginia native — who made his bones with 2014’s Latin-tinged “Cha Cha and 2016’s summer pop smash, “Broccoli — is hip-hop. That’s because D.R.A.M. worked long and hard to ensure that this debut would be as diverse as his listening habits, with “Outta Sight/Dark Lavender Interlude sounding like ’90s electro-pop, “Cash Machine reminiscent of Ray Charles-like R&B, “Cute coming across like dancehall reggae and “Misunderstood sounding as grand as any Foo Fighters power ballad.

And bonus, with the cover of his album, D.R.A.M. made a star out of his adorable golden doodle, Idnit (short for “idnit cute? which he is). We chat with the Grammy nominee about his album, his dog and what working on a call center taught him about artistry and empathy. Did you learn from the job you had before you struck it big — a call center gig? I think I learned something about being considerate to the next person or the person in
Your album touches on everything from arena rock to jazz. Was diversity important to assert right away? It was. I am all music. It depends on what mood I’m in or what everyday changes are occurring, I listen to all sorts of music, always have and I wanted to immediately reflect all of my vibes. I don’t discriminate. It was important to me that that was on the table right away. If you’re getting a chance to release music, you want to cover as many lanes as you can as quickly as you can. OK, I know you’re famous, but what about Idnit? Once you put your dog on your album cover, I can’t help but think he’s getting as much press as you. My dog is getting a lot of cred. Everybody wants to see and pet him. The good thing is I take Idnit with me almost everywhere I go. I love him to death. People want their picture with the dog, sometimes over me. [Laughs] I didn’t think it was going to get to this point. I just wanted an album cover that reflected the vibe of my album — warm and fuzzy — and that photo was the money shot. He’s gonna be a huge star. A.D. AMOROSI

Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (-4.5) Green Bay will be looking to avenge a 33-32 defeat at the Georgia Dome from Oct. 30 when the NFC Championship game kicks off on Sunday (3:05 p.m., Fox). The Packers have won their last eight contests (7-1 against the spread) and Aaron Rodgers has been unstoppable, amassing at least 30 points in his last six tilts. That includes Green Bay’s dramatic 34-31 win over Dallas last week in which Jordy Nelson didn’t play (he’s considered doubtful this week). The Falcons held the Se-

while they did score plenty of points when they beat Green Bay in October, it has to be concerning that the Packers held Julio Jones to just 29 yards on three catches (five targets) that day. That takes away some of the big-play potential of the Falcons’ point producers. Matt Ryan’s frustration could be compounded when the Packers’ sixth-rated QB attackers (40 sacks in the regular season) get through an O-line that’s allowed Ryan to be dropped 37 times this season (22nd in the league). The intimidation that matchup could cause
may also lead Ryan to make costly mistakes; the Packers were fourth-best in the league in interceptions this year (17). The Packers have the inside lane in this track meet; take the points with confidence. The pick: Packers +4.5 Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots (-6) New England goes from incredibly big to suspiciously low favorites as they host the Steelers in the AFC Championship game Sunday (6:40 p.m., CBS), one week after dispatching the Texans.
The Patriots piled 34 points on Houston’s top-rated defense last week while allowing just 16. Tom Brady’s ability and playoff poise is beyond question, and he draws a very favorable matchup against the NFL’s 12th-rated defense (16th in passing). It took an incredible effort by the Broncos’ pass rushers to stymie Brady in last year’s AFC Championship game, and a similar performance will be required from Pittsburgh. And while the Steelers brought the QB down 38 times this season (ninth in the league), they managed just one sack against the Chiefs last week and the Patriots’ Oline has excelled at keeping their QB upright this year (24 sacks allowed, fifth-best in the league). Ben Roethlisberger would need to have a career day against New England’s eighth-rated defense to win. He and the other two “Killer Bs,” Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell, can illafford to make mistakes or give up yardage on foolish penalties against this polished Patriots squad. And considering they couldn’t score a single touchdown against the Chiefs’ 24th-ranked defense last week, it’s hard to believe the Steelers will even keep this game close. The pick: Patriots -6
