ASSANGE SAYS HE STANDS MEXICO EXTRADITES BY US EXTRADITION OFFER ‘EL CHAPO’ TO US

WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up at Ecuador’s London embassy since 2012, said on Thursday he stood by his offer to be extradited to the United States providing his rights were protected. Assange said last week he would accept extradition if former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning were freed and on Wednesday U.S. President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s
35-year sentence, meaning she will be released in May. “I stand by everything I said including the offer to go to the United States if Chelsea Manning’s sentence was commuted,” Assange said in a live online audio news conference. “It’s not going to be commuted [until] May. We can have many discussions to that point.” REUTERS

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been extradited from a prison in Mexico to the United States, the Mexican government said on Thursday, one day before Donald Trump assumes the U.S. presidency. Guzman was one of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January 2016. Six months earlier, he had broken out of a high-security penitentiary in central Mexico through a mile-
long tunnel. “The government ... today handed Mr Guzman Loera to the U.S. authorities,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to a court decision rejecting a legal challenge by his lawyers against extradition. Guzman was being held in a prison in the infamously violent border city of Juarez in the northern state of Chihuahua where his Sinaloa cartel won a bloody drug war against rivals. REUTERS
MNUCHIN DRILLED OVER OFFSHORE TAX HAVENS

Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin said he would work to eliminate the need for offshore tax havens, as Democratic senators accused the Wall Street veteran of using such vehicles to shelter hedge fund money from the government. In a confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Presidentelect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Treasury was attacked for fail-
ing to promptly disclose he was a director of an offshore business vehicle domiciled in the Cayman Islands and owned more than $100 million in real estate. Offshore tax havens used to shield income have become a symbol of the growing divide between rich and average Americans. REUTERS

HOPES FADE UNDER AVALANCHE IN ITALY

Hopes of finding survivors dwindled on Thursday more than 24 hours after an avalanche struck a luxury mountain hotel in Italy burying up to 30 people under tonnes of snow and debris. The Civil Protection department said just two bodies had been recovered but its chief said the search for victims and possible survivors would continue through the night.
“There is always hope, if there were no hope the rescuers wouldn’t give everything they’ve got,” Fabrizio Curcio told reporters. He said his teams would “continue to do everything possible during the night,” even though conditions were far more difficult than in daytime. The disaster struck hours after four earthquakes with a magnitude above 5 hit central Italy. REUTERS

Today is a big day. HUGE! Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. A lot of people are saying that it will be the best inauguration. That it will make inaugurations great again. Anyone who says otherwise is a disaster. Little credibility! Fake news! Very unfair. Bad. It’s rigged. Jokes aside, today marks the end of one era, and the beginning of another. We don’t know if it will be better, or worse— but we know it will be extremely captivating. What else would you expect from the first President from Queens? We at Metro are unbiased
towards politics, but deeply care about topics that influence your daily life. Donald Trump has invaded our homes — and Facebook feeds — in recent years, but in the next four, his impact will be felt worldwide. In this issue — and on our website, Metro.us — we will continue to answer the question of how the world will look with this unexpected leadership—and what it’ll do to you. With that in mind, we can’t help but wonder what America will look like four years from now. What do you think? What do you want to happen? Tell us on Facebook and Twitter, and use the hashtag #Inauguration2021. We will print the best comments in Metro’s Monday edition.

Foreign policy
2017
“I believe I would get along with a lot of the world leaders that this country is not getting along with … and we will have a much more stable world.”
RUSSIA “Trump — given his own orientation and that of national security adviser Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn and Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson — will likely try to improve relations with Russia. However, the last two presidents have tried to do so, but these efforts ran aground, largely because of expansive U.S. interests in Europe and the Middle East. But a rising China could create a convergence of interests, making better relations possible. Also, both countries share an interest in battling Islamist terrorism.”
“I don’t like Assad at all, but Assad is killing ISIS. Russia is killing ISIS. And Iran is killing ISIS. And those three have now lined up because of our weak foreign policy.”
“Obamacare is a complete and total disaster. … We’re going to take it off the shelves.”
ALEJANDRO PEDRAZA
Professor at the Center for International Relations of the National Autonomous University of Mexico
“Donald Trump will not be able to build the wall. The logistics are
immense, and he would have to pay a huge amount of money to the owners of the land where it is planned to be built. On the other hand, the costs are immense and construction could not be concluded even in eight years. Finally, Mexico will not be obligated to pay for this wall, as there are no international mechanisms regarding that.”
IVAN KATCHANOVSKI
Political scientist at University of Ottawa, Canada
“Donald Trump, during the U.S. presidential campaign, stated that he prefers to focus the country’s policy on defeating ISIS in Syria and Iraq. He regards such fundamentalist Islamic
terrorism as a far bigger threat to the U.S. than Russia and suggested possibilities of cooperation with Russia in Syria in this task. But it remains to be seen whether or how he would achieve these goals. Such a policy is more likely to lead to a peace between the Syrian government and relatively moderate sections of the local opposition.”
Obamacare President of the Washington, D.C.-based Latin American Organization for Conservative Principles
“It could seem that Republicans do not have a certain plan regarding Obamacare, but that is not true. The problem is that there are several plans, there is no consensus on which of them to adopt. In general terms, there are two sides. One side proposes to revoke and replace
Border wall with Mexico
IRAN “Despite all of Trump’s rhetoric against the Iran nuclear deal, it will probably stand. The simple reason is that other signatories will not reimpose economic sanctions if the U.S. pulls out of the agreement. U.S. businesses would just be hurt, and for what? Iran would then restart its nuclear program but still have open trade with the world — a win-win for Iran.”
SYRIA
ALFONSO AGUILAR
“I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”
CHINA “Given Trump’s blame of China during the campaign for currency manipulation, unfair trade practices and aggressive behavior in the South China Sea, U.S.-China relations may be in for trying times. With higher U.S. tariffs, a trade war could ensue. Also, there will be perhaps more jousting between the U.S. and Chinese navies in the South and East China Seas.”
Obamacare immediately by eliminating the law and replacing it with a new one. There are others who have a more moderate approach. They say that this should not be done in such a drastic way, because it could end with a collapse of the health system in the country. Trump made a commitment, saying that there were two things that he was definitely going to maintain. First, that people with pre-existing conditions could not be denied health insurance. And second, that young people up to 26 years will be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan.”

TRUMP IMAGINED IN

SHERRY BEBICH JEFFE
Political analyst and professor at the University of Southern California
“Speculating about a possible impeachment is making theories about things that haven’t even happened. It’s way too early to talk about a political judgment, mainly if it is realized for actions not happened during the administration. We have information about
his businesses. But if he broke the law before or had any conflict on this issue, we should remember that the Congress’ rules are not valid for him. What we should ask in this regard, is what will Trump do about his foreign businesses. But even thinking of that is quite improbable: The political system is with him with all its force.”

Internal racism During the presidencial campaign, Trump attacked Muslims, Latinos and other groups. He also refused to condemn white supremacists who are campaigning for him.
“One thing is the discourse you have when you are a candidate. Another thing is the actions you make when you are president. Climate change was never mentioned in Trump’s speeches while he was candidate, because he was focusing his campaign on immigrant policies and economy. However,
“Let’s be clear: The president can recommend changes in personal income taxes or corporate taxes, but it will be up to the Congress to write a bill with those suggested changes, and then see if it can pass both houses. Yes, it’s true that the Republicans have a small majority in the Senate and somewhat larger in the House, but
“What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate.”

“The data indicates he operates out of the dominant white racist framing of this society and much of it shared with a majority of white Americans. … Cases of racism in the U.S. could increase. If he does not speak out forcefully against hate crimes, they are likely to stay at these high levels we have seen since his election.”
when as president-elect he was questioned on the topic, he said that he does not recognize the global warming and believes it does not exist. He even mentioned several nonscientific reasons to back up his opinion. But when he was elected, that has changed. Trump said that he had an “open mind” to discuss that. It doesn’t mean that he recognizes it, but he faced another reality. There are international agreements and movements the U.S. is involved with to fight climate change. So, if Trump wants to do what he promised during his campaign on environmental issues, he does not have an easy path.”
does that mean that a major overhaul of the tax system will happen? No. The Republicans in Congress do not want to make major changes in the tax code if the perception is that they are increasing the deficit by cutting taxes without cutting spending, reaffirming the popular perception that the Republicans are the party of the rich, and reigniting inflation. Trump is acting like the economy needs stimulus from tax cuts, but the truth is that at 4.8 percent, the system is at “full employment” and wages are rising.”
Economics ALEJANDRO PEDRAZA Professor at the Center for International Relations of the National Autonomous University of Mexico
“Trump made it clear that he is going to deport migrants with criminal records, but there are not so many illegal immigrants in jail. It would be very problematic from the human rights point of view to transport people to concentration
camps before being deported. It is hard to imagine such violations happening in a democratic country like the United States. Trump is likely to maintain the levels of deportations that the Obama administration was making.”

TRUMP’S INAUGURATION
Massive crowd expected for Women’s March on Washington Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Scarlett Johansson are among those slated to speak at the post-inauguration protest. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the United States, an estimated 200,000 women and men are expected to march in Washington to demand that elected leaders “act to protect the rights of women, their families and their communities.” The idea for the Women’s March on Washington started when a grandmother in Hawaii suggested to her friends that they should travel to the capital as a Million Women’s March, according to the organization’s website. About 40 immediately responded that they would be willing to join her. The movement blossomed with a Facebook post that went viral following Trump’s victory. Since then, the march has

grown to encompass human rights issues beyond women’s issues, including immigration and the treatment of Muslims and the LGBT community. Organizers have announced a roster of speakers at the event. Among them are activists Gloria Steinem and Angela Davis, actresses Scarlett Johansson and Ashley Judd, and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards. Some of those plan-
ning to attend are seasoned veterans of political activism and protest. For others, participating in the march will be a new experience. Shawna Wright of Beverly, Massachusetts, had planned to attend the inauguration — of Hillary Clinton. That didn’t work out. The march offers a post-election way to show the incoming Trump administration that there still is a large, vocal oppo-

sition, she said. “I think we feel in the wake of this election like, ‘Oh my God, how did we miss this, maybe we are in the minority, maybe we are grossly outnumbered,’
What do you hope this march will convey to President Trump? “I’m marching because I want everyone to know that we’re not going anywhere. Women’s rights is something that we’ve fought for for so long — not us, specifically, but through various generations — and I want to make sure that we’re moving forward.”
JoAn Lee, 30
Hazel Morley, 30
“I’ve always been a Democrat. I understand the reasons why people are Republicans, but I don’t understand why infringing on a woman’s right to choose and paid family leave is not on their platform. It seems like that should be a bipartisan support area.”
“My girlfriend is very important to me and because it’s so depressing what has happened with the election of Trump. He’s such an indecent human being. I think we need to tell the rest of the country and the rest of the world that we’re not an indecent people.”
Mark Cheney, 38
Linda Adams, 63
“I’ve been talking to my contemporaries and we’re all shaking our heads. We can’t believe that we’re in our 60s and protesting the same things we were when we were in our 20s. I have three daughters, and I don’t want their rights to be turned back.”
and I don’t think we are,” Wright said. Marni Halasa, a professional figure skater in New York City, has joined the post-election demonstrations outside Trump
Tower in Manhattan. She has donned an elaborate leopard outfit for those protests which she says is intended to remind people about Trump’s coarse comments about women. “I’m marching for power to be returned to ordinary citizens and mass movements like this can change policies,” Halasa said of her participation in the Washington march. Halasa added that the march also provides an opportunity to share ideas. “Protest is very transformative,” she said. “When you come together and talk and learn more about the issues, you become inspired and take a little of that with you wherever you go. The fight continues.” Alexandra Sherer, 21, an NYU student and a Republican state committeewoman, said she feels the march is “a waste of time.” She voted for Trump, although she was troubled by the “Access Hollywood” outtake video of Trump bragging to Billy Bush about groping women. Metro staff writer Kristin Toussaint contributed to this report.
SIGNAGE A sign of the times: Preparing to protest Ahead of the Women’s March, poster-making events were held across New York City for marchers to visually prepare for the event in Washington. Hazel Morley, 30, hosted a small gathering at her Ridgewood, Queens, apartment last Sunday. With the scent of magic marker and Aperol Spritzes in the air, Morley, who works as a men’s clothing designer, said making her grievances heard through art was a natural impulse. “Being a designer, you ask yourself how you can get involved and how you can make change,” Morley said. “So I figured why not put my skills to use.” Posters created over the afternoon included slogans that read “Grab This Pussy” — accompanied by an image of
glittery female anatomy — and “My Body My Rights.” Morley said she is planning to drive to D.C. early Saturday morning with seven friends in a rented van so that she can personally advocate for a woman’s right to choose and for paid family leave. “It seems like that should be a bipartisan support area.” She said. “I think it’s really important for us to be marching on the doorstep of the White House to show that we’re here and we’re 51 percent of population. Now that the election is over, I think it’s more about sending the message on what policies you want supported. “It’s more productive. And I think almost, deep down, because Trump is from New York, that he’s more progressive than a typical Republican.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

10 TRUMP’S INAUGURATION
METRO.US WEEKEND, JANUARY 20-22, 2017
Capital mobilizes for inauguration, protests Thousands of security personnel prepare to keep Trump supporters and protesters separated. Washington turned into a virtual fortress on Thursday ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, with police ready to step in to separate protesters from Trump supporters at any sign of unrest. Some 900,000 people, both Trump backers and opponents, are expected to flood the nation’s capital for Friday’s inauguration ceremony, according to organizers’ estimates. Events include the swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol and a parade to the White House along streets thronged with spectators. The number of planned protests and rallies this year is far above what has been typical at recent presidential inaugurations, with some 30 permits granted in Washington for anti-Trump rallies and sympathy protests planned in cities from Boston to Los Angeles, and abroad in cities including London and Sydney. The night before the inauguration, hundreds

of people turned out in New York for a protest at the Trump International Hotel and Tower, a few blocks from the Trump Tower where the businessman lives. Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, and actor Alec Baldwin, who parodies Trump on “Saturday Night Live” were set to speak at a rally condemning Trump’s policies. “Donald Trump may control Washington, but we control our destiny as Americans,” de Blasio said. In Washington, police cars lined much of Pennsylvania Avenue, the parade route, as workers unloaded crowd control fences from flatbed trucks, erected barricades and marked off pavement with tape. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said police
aimed to keep groups separate, using tactics similar to those employed during last year’s political conventions. “The concern is some of these groups are proTrump, some of them are con-Trump, and they may not play well together in the same space,” Johnson said on MSNBC. Trump opponents have been angered by his comments during the campaign about women, illegal immigrants and Muslims and his pledges to scrap the Obamacare health reform and build a wall on the Mexican border. The Republican’s supporters admire his experience in business, including as a real estate developer and reality television star, and view him as an outsider who will take a fresh approach to politics. New president is ready for Day 1 Donald Trump is ready to begin taking executive actions, moving quickly to crack down on immigration, build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and roll back policies of President Barack Obama. actions that can be implemented without the input of Congress. “He’s committed to not just Day 1, but Day 2, Day 3 of enacting an agenda of real change, and I think that you’re going to see that in the days and weeks to come, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said. The top items on the agenda for Trump, who has presided over a sprawling business empire but has never before held public office, mirror the populist pledges that fueled his election victory: immigration curbs and job creation, particularly in the manufacturing sector, Spicer said. Trump’s advisers vetted more than 200 potential executive orders for him to consider signing on health care, climate policy, immigration, energy and numerous other matters but it was not clear how many orders he will approve, according to a member of the Trump transition team who was not authorized to talk to the press. Trump also is expected to impose a federal hiring freeze, reverse some environmental protections and take steps to delay implementation of a Labor Department rule slated to take effect in April that would require brokers who give retirement advice to put their clients’ best interests first. Barack Obama, a Democrat ending eight years as president, was also quick to use his executive authority when he took office, creating an ethics code for his appointees

and banning the use of waterboarding, a simulated drowning, for interrogating suspects detained in terrorism cases. Trump is expected to sign an executive order in his first few days to direct the building of a wall on the southern border with Mexico, one of several immigration-related steps his advisers have recommended. That includes rescinding Obama’s order that allowed more than 700,000 people brought into the United States illegally as children to stay in the country on a two-year authorization to work and attend college, according to several people close to the presidential transition team. Trump also is expected to announce more specific plans to build the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and actions to limit the entry of asylum seekers from Latin America. Advisers to Trump expect him to put restrictions on people entering the United States from certain countries until a system for “extreme vetting for Islamic extremists can be set up. REUTERS

Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. To find out more and schedule your free screening appointment, simply call 800-879-7343

¡Hablamos Español!
Shortly before Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States on Friday, more than 4,200 marijuana joints will be distributed to the throngs of people watching the proceedings unfold. The idea of the event dubbed #Trump420 is to send a message to the country’s next president and promote the legalization of marijuana at a national level, organizers say. Behind the initiative is the DC Cannabis Coalition. After handing out joints, activist are planning to march on the National Mall to demand federal legalization of recreational weed. “We started planning it in November 2016, when we knew that Sen. Jeff Sessions became a nominee for attorney general,” Nikolas R. Schiller, co-founder and director of communications at DCMJ told Metro. He added: “Our fifth installment of the #SmokeSessions campaign
turned into #Trump420. We realized that cannabis is not a partisan issue and since the government in Washington, D.C., is prohibited from opening adult dispensaries, we could provide visitors with free cannabis in order to raise awareness about the unfinished cannabis reform.” There could be setbacks with the marijuana legislation. Sessions has made it clear that he is against marijuana legalization of any kind. “It is important that President-elect Trump puts pressure on Congress to have cannabis withdrawn from the Controlled Substances Act and allow states to move forward with their own laws without the threat of federal interference,” Schiller said.
#Trump420 “There are dozens of volunteers around Washington, D.C., who are helping to gather joints,” a DC Cannabis Coalition representative told Metro. “We hope hundreds, if not thousands, of people will join us on the west side of Dupont Circle, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. We hope that those from out of town can get a free joint containing cannabis grown in D.C. But more importantly, we hope that President-elect Trump will now come out in full support of the legalization of cannabis.”

“GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES” (NETFLIX INSTANT)
We say this a lot, but it’s truly tragic: There just aren’t enough classic Hollywood movies available to stream (at least as part of big streaming service subscriptions). That’s doubly a shame because old movies are the happiest movies ever. At least you can dial up Howard Hawks’ blinding Technicolor musical, with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell vamping about an ocean liner, digging for rich husbands.

It makes him feel better, and it will probably help you, too.

Have a hankering for 90s nostalgia? Even if you were too young to remember those carefree days of denim jackets and scrunchies, you can totally relive it through watching “Friends.” The hit show focuses on a group of friends living out their twenties in New York City — in search of good times, employment and romance. The theme song itself is enough to put you in a good mood and you have 10 seasons to stream to hear it over and over again.
Remember Eddie Murphy? He used to make movies, didn’t he? This action-comedy was only his fourth film, and it makes the strong case for him as maybe the most entertaining human on the planet. Make Eddie Murphy great again.

Beatles’ first movie, one of the purest explosions of joy ever committed to film. It was intended as a quickie cash-in on a presumably passing fad. Twenty One Pilots’ two broody hit tracks, “Stressed Out” and “Heathens” (of “Suicide Squad” fame), haunted airwaves and earned the duo three nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards — including the elusive Record of the Year. The Columbus, OH natives — Tyler Joseph, singer, and Josh Dun, drums — shift genre gears repeatedly on their 14-track LP, “Blurryface,” making them a tough act to nail down, with threads of bouncy pop-punk and emotional electronica woven throughout Joseph’s cheeky and occasionally neurotic rhymes. The longtime friends are headed on tour before setting their sights on the festival season, a marathon, rather than a sprint, to promote the critically acclaimed album. Dun calls from Ohio before the tour jumps off for its first stateside date in Providence, RI. You’re coming up with three Grammy nominations this year — do you remember where you were when you found out? I woke up at home and had text messages from friends in the industry. They were the ones who told me, and I’ll be hon-

est, I’ve never done this before with the Grammys. I’m not educated in how it works, and I didn’t know if [the nominations] were a public thing, or even real. [Laughs] I quickly realized that it was, in fact, real, and people knew about it. I don’t even know how to describe that feeling. It was a proud moment for us as a band, and knowing what the people who
listen to us are capable of doing. Making that much noise has gotten us recognized to this point. Touring is grueling, but now you also have the impending awards coming up, too. Are you finding yourself stressing or obsessing about it at all? I put [the nominations] aside when I’m thinking about going on stage every night. At this point,
walking in front of that many people every night is such a surreal task in itself. I don’t think it’s a natural feeling to walk in front of that many people and be expected to entertain, but it’s my favorite thing to do. Then, before and after the show, I sit in a dark, quiet room with a candle going and some soft music. I like that dynamic of contrast — feeling very isolated to be-

ing in front of thousands of people. It’s that surging of emotions that rids us of our dark thoughts and anxiety. Because you brought it up, I have to ask. What kind of candles do you burn? [Laughs] So there’s this spot here in Columbus called the Candle Lab. I have way too many candles from there. You
At this point you must be tired of talking about genre-jumping, but I want to know, how much consideration do you give that when putting together a tracklist and order of an album? Honestly, with the order of the tracks, the main thing we’re thinking about is how it’ll translate live. We were born into the industry by playing live shows, so everything we had for a while was like, “What does that look like live? How does that experience translate to people in the audience?” When we finished “HeavyDirtySoul,” we were like, “That’s a show intro. So that needs to be the first track on the album.” I think the songs flow into each other to translate live for us. Even before an album is done recording, we’re like, “OK, Tyler needs to play bass on this song and this song, so let’s put them next to each other so the transition [on stage] is easier.” There’s a lot of that type of conversation and intention when deciding which song goes where.

“Splitâ€? Director: M. Night Shyamalan Stars: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy Rating: R Despite what you (or he) might think, M. Night Shyamalan is not a twist guy. He’s also not the second coming of Spielberg. He’s barely even a populist. He may think he’s all three, but his attempts at mimicry — at pretending he’s the new Hitchcock, the guy who plays audiences like a piano — fail in interesting ways. Even when the ďŹ lms are dogs — unless they’re “The Last Airbender,â€? his Great Dane-size poop-fest — Shyamalan makes ambitious, even “artyâ€? numbers that wind up using genre tropes like breadcrumbs, leading us to more emotional, and in
WKND some cases deeply troubling, places. So it goes with “Split.â€? The set-up promises a lean, mean killing machine: Three high school girls are chloroformed by a shaved-head meanie (James McAvoy), awakening, “10 CloverďŹ eld Laneâ€?-style, in a dank, windowless room. Their captor is named Kevin, though that’s only one of his 23 personalities. There’s Dennis, the OCD jailer; Patricia, a prim English woman issuing threats as though she were taking afternoon tea requests; Barry, the hepped-up artist; and Hedwig, a preteen who dances to rap and crushes on Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casey, the most prominent and least sociable captive. The multiple McAvoys promise no immediate harm, but they do keep alluding to “The Beast,â€? a coming mystery menace to which they may or may not be
sacriďŹ ced. This sounds gruesome, perhaps even oensive. But Shyamalan could never make a mere midnight movie. He’s too empathetic, too sincere, and as a result, Kevin — with his very movie ailment — is no mere monster, but someone wrestling with deep and insurmountable trauma. Shyamalan cares, for him and his three potential victims, who are too human to be mere bodies to the slaughter. Casey gets the most screentime, and for a good reason: Taylor-Joy gives the best, most moving Shyamalan turn since Haley Joel Osment himself. McAvoy may have the ashier role, and he nails it, but like Osment, she’s able to transcend her director’s sometimes overly-studied style, beaming deep, fragile humanity and intelligence, all while doing very little.

“The Founder tells the inspirational true story of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton, center), who screwed over the creators of McDonald’s and created a fast-food empire. THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
“The Founderâ€? Director: John Lee Hancock Stars: Michael Keaton, Nick Oerman Rating: PG-13 In the mid-’90s, screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski created their own cottage industry, scripting biopics that played like parodies. “Ed Woodâ€? and “The People vs. Larry Flyntâ€? were stirring, Horatio Alger-style tales of triumph, only for ďŹ gures who were either considered failures or simply unseemly. “The Founderâ€? plays like one of those crossed with a “Wolf of Wall Streetâ€?-style takedown of unbridled capitalism. Its hero is a huckster and a cheat and a scoundrel. And he won. He was a loser who became a winner. The only people who come out of the ďŹ lm inspired will
be greed monsters, or those who vote them into the White House. The title itself is a dark joke. Our protagonist, one Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), didn’t found McDonald’s; he just popularized it after swindling the original owners. It’s the mid-’50s and Ray, a longtime get-rich-quick schemer, happens upon a little burger shack in San Bernardino, run by hard-working Dick and Mac McDonald (Nick Oerman and John Carroll Lynch). He’s wowed by their “symphony of eďŹƒciency,â€? which elides waiters and even inside seating to bring fresh, quality food seconds after ordering. It’s a revolutionary idea, but the McDonalds are loath to franchise, for fear of, among other things, declining quality control. They reluctantly let Ray spread it to the Midwest, fearing this oily, sweaty, desperate fast-talker may try to screw them. He did.
That “The Founderâ€? was directed by John Lee Hancock, he of straight-up inspirational fare like “The Blind Sideâ€? and “Saving Mr. Banks,â€? sounds lame on paper. But in practice it’s productively counterintuitive. He’s made a movie that looks and plays saccharine, only it’s about an evil man whose nefarious exploits are the stu of business legend. The result is a poison-pen letter sneaked into the mainstream, if also the drama equivalent of a one-joke comedy. It does nothing but make its points, important though they are: that America always loves a con man, that there’s a ďŹ ne line between those who work hard for success, like the McDonald brothers, and those, like Ray Kroc, who want it all, plus more besides. It’s all a touch too tidy and self-satisďŹ ed, but that doesn’t mean its blows don’t land. MP

Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (-4.5) Green Bay will be looking to avenge a 33-32 defeat at the Georgia Dome from Oct. 30 when the NFC Championship game kicks off on Sunday (3:05 p.m., Fox). The Packers have won their last eight contests (7-1 against the spread) and Aaron Rodgers has been unstoppable, amassing at least 30 points in his last six tilts. That includes Green Bay’s dramatic 34-31 win over Dallas last week in which Jordy Nelson didn’t play (he’s considered doubtful this week). The Falcons held the Seahawks’ offense in check last week but Seattle had only averaged 15 points per game on the road this season. Rodgers and company present a far sterner challenge for the league’s 25th-ranked defense. Atlanta’s offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, topping 33 points in each of their last five contests. And while they did score plenty of points when they beat Green Bay in October,

it has to be concerning that the Packers held Julio Jones to just 29 yards on three catches (five targets) that day. That takes away some of the big-play potential of the Falcons’ point producers. Matt Ryan’s frustration could be compounded when the Packers’ sixth-rated QB attackers (40 sacks in the regular season)
get through an O-line that’s allowed Ryan to be dropped 37 times this season (22nd in the league). The intimidation that matchup could cause may also lead Ryan to make costly mistakes; the Packers were fourth-best in the league in interceptions this year (17). The Packers have the inside lane in this track
meet; take the points with confidence. The pick: Packers +4.5 Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots (-6) New England goes from incredibly big to suspiciously low favorites as they host the Steelers in the AFC Championship game Sunday (6:40 p.m., CBS), one week after dispatching the Texans.
The Patriots piled 34 points on Houston’s top-rated defense last week while allowing just 16. Tom Brady’s ability and playoff poise is beyond question, and he draws a very favorable matchup against the NFL’s 12th-rated defense (16th in passing). It took an incredible effort by the Broncos’ pass rushers to stymie Brady in last
year’s AFC Championship game, and a similar performance will be required from Pittsburgh. And while the Steelers brought the QB down 38 times this season (ninth in the league), they managed just one sack against the Chiefs last week and the Patriots’ O-line has excelled at keeping their QB upright this year (24 sacks allowed, fifth-best in the league). Ben Roethlisberger would need to have a career day against New England’s eighth-rated defense to win. He and the other two “Killer Bs,” Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell, can ill-afford to make mistakes or give up yardage on foolish penalties against this polished Patriots squad. And considering they couldn’t score a single touchdown against the Chiefs’ 24thranked defense last week, it’s hard to believe the Steelers will even keep this game close. The pick: Patriots -6
Vikings’ RB Peterson flirts with Giants on ESPN
Adrian Peterson may soon be a free agent. GETTY IMAGES
The Giants haven’t had a truly elite running back since Tiki Barber, and their running game was particularly pathetic this past season as Rashad Jennings was — statistically — their leading runner and he finished with just 593 yards on the ground. Paul Perkins showed flashes, but with just one 100-plus yard game on the season, the Giants are rightfully not sold on him as a No. 1 back. One headline-grabbing solution could be in landing former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson. Peterson gave the Giants a wink on Thurs-
day, telling ESPN’s “First Take” that New York could be a good landing spot for him. “There’s a couple teams out there that I’ve thought about,” Peterson said. “New York was one of them that popped up, Tampa Bay, lot of different teams. Houston would be a good spot … I’ll stop right there. I’m just throwing random names out there.” The Vikings have a team option on the face of their franchise and there’s been some indication that Minnesota is ready to let him go due to cost and health concerns. ProFootball-
Talk reported Thursday that the Vikings decision on whether or not to retain Peterson will happen soon. Peterson played in just three games in 2016 and carried the ball just 37 times for 72 yards in those outings. In 2015, though, Peterson was arguably the best back in the league — rushing for a whopping 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns on 327 carries. Peterson will be 32 years old, considered ancient for a running back, at the start of the 2017 season. MATT BURKE

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson will be the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom under the Trump administration, according to reports. The move likely means that Johnson
will relinquish day-today control of the Jets and that his younger brother, Christopher Wold Johnson, will take the reigns of the organization. This is not the first time an owner of an NFL team has served as an ambassador. Steelers owner Dan Rooney was the U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 2009-12.
