President Donald Trump stands by his belief that millions of people voted illegally in the U.S. election, the White House said on Tuesday, despite widespread evidence to the contrary. “The president does believe that,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters. State officials in charge of the Nov. 8 election have said they found no evidence of widespread voter fraud and there is no
history of it in U.S. elections. Even House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the most senior Republican in Congress, said he had seen no evidence to back up Trump’s claims. Trump lost the popular vote to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by about 2.9 million. REUTERS

Lead levels in Flint, Michigan’s drinking water have receded below federal limits, state officials said, although they cautioned residents to continue using filtered water as work went on to replace the city’s lead pipes. Tests showed lead levels in the city’s drinking water were 12 parts per billion (PPB) between July and December, below the federal limit of 15 PPB, Michigan officials said. Flint was under the

NO CHARGES FOR LA COPS WHO KILLED BLACK MAN Two Los Angeles police officers who fatally shot an unarmed black man described by his lawyer as mentally challenged will face no criminal charges over the 2014 killing, the district attorney said, calling their actions “legally justified.” The killing of Ezell Ford was one of many shootings of unarmed black men by law enforcement that triggered protests and fueled a renewed civil rights move-
control of a state-appointed emergency manager when it switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River in April 2014. The more corrosive river water caused lead to leach from city pipes and go into the drinking water. In a redacted report, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said Officers Sharlton Wampler and Antonio Villegas spotted Ford leaving a “known gang area” on Aug. 11, 2014, and suspected he was trying to dispose of something illegal. As Wampler tried to apprehend Ford, the two men scuffled and ended up on the ground with Ford reaching for the officer’s gun, according to the report. REUTERS

Nabella Vega spent her Monday night with around 100 other people talking about policies like the Muslim registry. Why do people support it, they tried to figure out, and how can they convey to those supporters their belief that it’s a violation of civil rights? Vega, 27, is a Muslim woman who came to the U.S. just four days before 9/11, an event which undeniably colored her experience here, she said. But most others in the room weren’t Muslim.
An activist voices opposition against a Muslim registry at JVP Boston’s “Hanukkah solidarity march.” COURTESY OF JEWISH VOICE FOR PEACE BOSTON
It was obvious to Vega that some attending the “Civil Disobedience Training,” held by the organization Jewish Voice for Peace Boston (JVP), didn’t have much experience around Muslim people or the Muslim community. That was fine, though, because the fact that they were there meant they were trying to learn, she said. “Now more than ever, it’s important to recognize discomfort and recognize the importance of challenging that discomfort,” Vega said. “When coming to one of these [workshops]. … It’s accessible, the environment is supportive and it’s designed for you — for the person who doesn’t have a context but who is ready to engage.”
Monday’s workshop was the first of two “activist trainings” JVP planned this week to better equip Bostonians with ways to counter Islamophobia and racism, which the organization says is increasing under a Donald Trump presidency. In December, JVP organized a Hanukkah solidarity march to shed light these issues, but Liza Behrendt, an organizer for JVP Boston, said they soon realized that wasn’t all they could do. “It became clear that we need to be able to follow up that action with concrete steps to stop Islamophobia on an institutional and individual level,” she said. The organization has been working with
Muslim leaders in the Boston-area to figure out what kind of support that community is looking for from non-Muslim allies, Behrendt said. Monday’s class focused on educating people on Islamophobic policies and equipping them with ways to take actions against some, like the Muslim registry, “if that is in fact implemented,” Behrendt said. Intelligent Mischief, a group focused on social change, helped lead that workshop. On Wednesday, the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) will lead another session that focuses on bystander intervention training. BARCC teaches intervention skills at colleges, high schools and more, usually in the context of sexual assault or violence, but for this they’ll adapt their lesson to apply to harassment or hate crimes because of racism. “One of the key takeaways is that there’s always something you can do [as a bystander],” said Steph Trilling, BARCC’s director of Community Awareness and Prevention Services. “It’s about really thinking of what can you do in that moment, rather than ignoring something or walking away.” Read more about the classes at metro.us.

Metro US boosts monthly readership to 4 million in print and online The increased audience in New York, Philadelphia and Boston in 2016 came despite a declining newspaper market. One million people a day picked up a copy of Metro newspaper in New York, Philadelphia and Boston last year, marking a significant rise in readership amid an otherwise declining market, according to the latest readership survey by Nielsen Scarborough. That represents a 16 percent jump compared to a recent 7 percent dip for other daily print newspapers. The boost translates to more than 138,000 new Metro print readers a day. Metro US now reaches nearly four million print and digital readers a month. Breaking down the
numbers, a combined 3.4 million people read a copy of Metro in New York, Philadelphia and Boston each month in 2016, and an additional 518,000 nationwide visited Metro.us, according to Google Analytics. Taken together, the print and digital editions reported a 20 percent spike in readership year over year. Yggers Mortensen, Metro US publisher and CEO, said he was “delighted that our editorial content resonates with millions of metropolitans — as our growing audience in print and online testifies. I would like to thank our readers for their loyalty, our advertisers for their trust and our staff for their hard work and dedication.” The strong results helped Metro New York reach 1.5 million readers a week in print and on-

line, making it the most read free daily newspaper in Greater New York. Print growth was bolstered by a distribution partnership with the MTA, providing Metro with new racks at 100 subway stations, with each rack holding 700 copies of the paper. In Philadelphia, Metro’s readership jumped 24 percent. It now reaches 743,000 Philadelphians a month and nearly 40 percent of all people working and living in the city. Boston also marked
significant growth last year, with a 13 percent increase in readership and a monthly audience of 451,000. Now, nearly one-third of people living and working in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, read Metro. “While most print media vehicles are seeing their audience shrink, Metro’s print audience is growing in an increasingly digital and connected world,” said Wilf Maunoir, Metro’s marketing and research director. “Thanks to Metro’s unique editorial formula
and innovative free distribution model, Metro is a hybrid media. It combines the benefits of print and transit media.” Metro US can attribute its success to its talented journalists, advertising, sales, marketing and distribution team who help deliver provocative and thoughtful local news and entertainment coverage each day. Standing behind it is Metro’s global network of 100 newspapers. “Metro covers everything you need to know about everything that matters,” said Editor in Chief Alek Korab. “It’s the best way to overcome FOMO — the fear of missing out — when it comes to hot news, President Donald Trump, the best movies and TV, going out in the city, and looking good doing it. A new stage for Boston hip-hop Middle East showcase The Pull Up provides Boston’s rising rap acts a new platform. BRENDAN MCGUIRK @BrendanMcGuirk letters@metro.us
When it comes to cultural influence, there’s arguably no force greater than hip-hop. But for many local lovers of the genre, finding a point of entry into the regional scene can be a challenge. And while there’s no shortage of creative folks making quality hip-hop music, opportunities for them to connect with fans via live shows are sparsely limited. Enter The Pull Up, a new quarterly showcase featuring rising hip-hop
acts, which will hold its second installment tonight at the Middle East. The event’s mission is to give artists who have a proven ability to develop audiences the chance to grow in front of a live audience. After a sold-out first installment Upstairs in October, tonight’s The Pull Up event graduates to the larger Downstairs room, where it will feature Soundcloud sensations Rosewood Bape and Jefe Replay. While both musicians have sizable online followings with song streams in the hundreds of thousands, neither has headlined yet. This is exactly the sort of oversight The Pull Up is meant to remedy. As previously noted in this space, one of my new year ski resolutions in 2017 was to immerse my children in their own ski lessons more frequently this winter, something I haven’t managed to do in more than 25 years. No matter what your age, odds are that most among us face some sort of trepidation on the mountain, whether that be as simple as making turns, as strenuous as navigating bumps, or taking your skiing or riding to a more extreme level in the parks or pipe. For me, that apprehension exists when the trees come into play. While most glades on your average trail map remain perfectly navigable, my commonplace skiing gears tend to stall when the pitch becomes a bit steeper, or, particularly, when I’ve been led into the realm of the secret stash, terrain reserved only for those in the know. Which means … well, sometimes I have no idea how to handle it.
Thus, this season I’ve decided to take a lesson for tree skiing, hoping to learn the essentials of making the quick turns necessary to handle the environment, while gaining the confidence that tends to escape my normally eager legs upon first dip into the woods. I’ve got my eyes on a few destinations as I look to dive into it this season. (Note: Rates do not include lift tickets.) At Vermont’s Bolton Valley Resort, which has some of the more underrated tree skiing in all of New England, participants must have prior experience in glade skiing, but will receive tips from the pros during tours that can range from one to six hours. These glade tours run $85 for one hour for singles ($145 for two), $149 for two hours ($269 for two) and $360 for the full six hours ($720 for two). Add another person for $60 an hour. At Sugarbush Mountain Resort there is always the temptation of just spending the day, one-on-one with future Ski Hall of Famer and Warren Miller star John Egan ($599 for a full day, midweek), but the resort also has group lessons that will cater to your ad-
vanced skiing and riding needs. The Max 4 Adventure Workshops are small and personalized lessons that will help entry-level black diamond skiers and riders tackle some of the more gnarly terrain at Sugarbush, including steeps, bumps and trees. Morning and afternoon sessions (10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m., respectively) are $80 each. Attend both sessions for $145. Ragged Mountain Resort has this season instituted a fantastic new program for new skiers and riders with the Bebe Wood Free Learn to Ski and Ride package, which offers, yes, free skiing for first timers ages 7 and up, with the option to purchase a season pass at the end of your three lessons for only $69. But that doesn’t mean the Danbury, New Hampshire, mountain is only for novices. Group lessons for black diamond skiers run only $49 for one and three-quarter hours, while a private lesson (one hour $89, three hours $179) may be the perfect way to explore the terrain on your own, whether you bring a beginner or not. Balance, control and quick stops in the trees — get ready for class.

East Boston Young folks and families alike flock to East Boston — a city-convenient neighborhood with loads of promise.

With trendy restaurants and high-rise luxury on the market — just call it ‘alt-Southie.’ MEGAN JOHNSON @megansarahj letters@metro.us
In booming East Boston, prospective homebuyers and real-estate investors are snapping up existing properties at breakneck speed. It’s no wonder that homes in the Jeffries Point section of Eastie are commanding north of $500 per square foot, says Ed Deveau, a Realtor at Century 21 Mario Real Estate. “To be honest, I’m in desperate need of homes to sell to keep up with demand,” says Deveau. “We’ve hit a point where even the most modest three-family home in is the $600-$700K range. But the million-dollar listing is certainly starting to become a reality — in fact, I sold a threefamily on Cottage Street for $1.25 million in December.” The times are changing in the neighborhood, largely known for its close-knit immigrant community. It’s not unusual for residents to find letters in their mailboxes from developers asking to buy their property without even stepping foot inside. And with attractive features like a short commute on the Blue Line to
downtown Boston and restaurants like Cunard Tavern opening soon, the neighborhood is enticing for those looking to avoid the exorbitant prices of South Boston and Charlestown. So who, exactly, is
“The million-dollar listing is certainly starting to become a reality.” Ed Deveau, Realtor, Century 21 Mario Real Estate
flocking to the neighborhood? “I have experienced an influx of college students, hipsters, single professionals, couples with a dog, and even young families,” explains Kevin Concannon, real estate agent and East Boston resident. “Three of my late-20s friends have moved to Eastie from Arlington, Allston and Southie, respectively, over the last few years, which has been awe-
some. I guess you might classify their demographic as ‘thoughtful bros.’ The ‘alt-Southie’ crowd seem to be the most common in Jeffries Point.” But it’s not just Jeffries Point that’s flourishing. Condos in Eagle Hill are selling for over $600,000, while single-family homes in Orient Heights fetch well into the mid $500,000s. And if you’re looking to rent, you’ll have to spend a pretty penny, too. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom in East Boston is $1,876, an increase from last year’s average of $1,682, says Concannon. But rapid luxury development often comes with some strain for the existing community. Some current and longtime residents are unable to pay the skyrocketing rents, threatening the diversity the neighborhood is known for. Still, residents say that Eastie is teeming with character. “Although there is a ton of investment going on, East Boston has been able to really keep its identity,” adds Deveau. “For a lack of a better term, it still feels like a neighborhood.”

If you want a taste of true luxury in Eastie, the Eddy offers a mix of studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments with amenities like a dog-washing station and bike-maintenance facilities. Of course, the prices are steep: Studios start at $1,825 a month, and two-bedrooms start at $3,200 a month.

boys QB Tony Romo were spotted at the victory party for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy this past week, that got Broncos fans buzzing. Things worked out great for Peyton Manning in Denver when he signed there in 2012 at the age of 36. Coincidentally, Romo is 36 right now and — like Manning was five years ago — is battling significant injuries. Don’t be surprised if Elway rolls the dice again.
FISHY STORY RY Instead of suiting up for Super Bowl LI in 11 days, former Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes will likely be mulling legal options. Spikes, who played with the Buffalo Bills this past season, had a portion of his paychecks garnished this past season because he didn’t pay “The Fish Guy.
“The Fish Guy u is i an n “aquatic “ qu ti services company in Massachusetts that transports aquatic creatures — among other things. Spikes had his tropical fish and aquarium moved from Rhode Island to Buffalo a couple years back by “The Fish Guy, but the linebacker just never paid up apparently.
